Marina Hang-On Breeding Box, Large

Marina Hang-On Breeding Box, LargeI've been using this box for my young angelfish fry for a little over a week. The accompanying instructions were easy to follow. The parts fit together very well. One needs only an air pump and tubing to set it up. By adjusting the air flow with the supplied airline tube screw the outflow water stream can be adjusted down to slow dribble so the fry aren't sucked out. There are two sizes of grates for the outflow (I'm using the narrower slotted one for now). Even as slow as I currently have the water flow, the water temperature has been stable, and the water has stayed much cleaner than I expected it would. I am satisfied with this product.

It looks great but I have been unable to use it as of now because I did not realize that, for 1) the box does not allow for you to have a lid on your aquarium and I have to keep a lid on my aquarium at all times. And 2) The large box it too big to hang off the side of my 10 gal tank which is where I planned on putting and using it.

So over all the box looks like it will be a great breeder box if you keep in mind that it is too large for the side of a 10 gal and that you can not use a lid on the main aquarium when using the breeder box.

I bought this HO box to act as a mini refugium for my 10 gallon tank. I keep some fast growing plants in it I have had zero measurable nitrates since I got it. This box is designed to use a bubble lift to pull in water from the tank. This works ok but it creates a pretty loud gurgling noise and does not end up not moving much water. I like the noise and the water flow is adequate for my purposes but I don't think I would keep more than two or three small fish in it.

I would definitely NOT keep even one clown fish in this box unless it was hooked up to a powerhead. It would be easy to hook it up to a pump with some 1/2 inch tubing. This would really get the water moving. If you plan on using this as a breeding box I would strongly encourage you to be ready to do that.

The plastic is sturdy enough that I'm comfortable moving it around. It comes with a cover with a small hole in it held on by two very small slide clips. I lost one immediately but just using one is working well.

works great for my fry Would Recommend simple and ez to use. one thing i kept trying to find when buying was how far it hung off the tank i wanted to put it in back like a filter it hangs 4 inches so you will need 4 inches of clearance to hang it off the back of a tank against the wall

I have used this as a guppy fry (baby) breeder because adult guppies eat their young. This product works very well and moves water from the tank to the breeder box using an air line (air pump required, not included). I like that I can have the water constantly flowing through the breeder box so when the fry are grown up, i can just toss them into the main tank without acclimating them first. It also comes with two "gates" that can turn your breeder box into three separate sections. Each "gate" has slits so the water is constantly moving (albeit, slowly). I like that I can also use the breeder box as a refugium, where i can add plants instead of fry, cycle water through the box and have the plants absorb some ammonia, nitrites and nitrates WITHOUT HAVING THE FISH NIP AT THE PLANTS! There are also 2 small gratings included (finer and coarser) that are inserted right where the water starts to flow back into the main tank. I like to use both. One at the "Slot" where you are supposed to put one, and one after it where you just wedge it in perfect fit.

Some problems are that the dividers'/gates' slits are wide enough to let baby guppies through. they guppy fry can also swim underneath the dividers/gates. Not perfect, but i sure am glad i bought it.

NOTE: it doesn't fit the side of a standard 10g tank. almost. but it doesn't. just a heads up.
