Laguna PowerGlo Mini Pond Light Kit

Laguna PowerGlo Mini Pond Light KitThis product operates exactly as specified, that is, the lights turn on around sunset and turn off around sunrise. Nonetheless the product is disappointing and poorly conceived for at least two reasons. First, a different colored lens is supplied for EACH of the three lighting fixtures making it impossible to create a glow of a single hue. Instead, one blue, one yellow and one red lens is supplied. Second, the wiring between the light fixtures is permanently installed by the manufacturer who cautions buyers against changing this wiring. Without changing that wiring the product cannot be installed in a customized manner. It seems likely that the people who designed this product have not installed it in more than one or two settings. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if YOU ARE NOT MODERATELY HANDY with WIRING and if you ARE UNWILLING TO DISREGARD THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.

These lights work well in a small water feature, but could certainly benefit from longer cords between lamps. They sometimes stay on during cloudy days. Photo cell to control on-after-dark feature is located on the bottom of the transformer which puts it in the shade.

These lights work just fine in my 10 x 8 koi pond. I placed them in the middle at the bottom. I pointed one at each end and left the one in the middle shine up to the top. Not to bright but just enough. For the price you can't beat them. Even my fish like them!

I purchased these lights less than 6 months ago and one by one, all the lights burned out. I'm going to have to contact Laguna to get them replaced. Also the cord connecting the 3 lights is way too short to accomplish anything fancy in my small 1000gal Koi pond!

Love this light set up. I have it in a very small pond, 50 gallons with shower fountain. It looks like hot lava! This would not be for medium or large ponds, unless you just wanted to highlight a waterfall or small fountain. The lights are small and so is the distance between each one. The price you can't beat, but I wish it was a solar unit. We're going to put it on an outdoor timer to save on energy though the night.

Coralife Energy Savers ACL76023 flouorescent at Valve For R/OThe product worked well until the float filled with water through the seams. To inexpensive to send back, so I was able to separate the tank assembly and reglue properly. Works fine after my repair. Would not recommend. I used expoxy type glue which has held up for several weeks so far. Quality control needed by maker. Unit to an several hours to fill up with water. Very small leak.

Como 5 x Aquarium Air Pump Tube Suction Cup Airline Clips Holders

Como 5 x Aquarium Air Pump Tube Suction Cup Airline Clips HoldersGreat way to manage airline tubing and power cords coming out of an aquarium. The suction cups aren't super strong and sometimes come loose, but generally get the job done.

Given the price, I could complain much about the quality. The plastic got stiff and lose the traction in the fish tank. They became opaque white.

Como Air Flow Control Distributor Aquarium Lever Pump Valve

Como Air Flow Control Distributor Aquarium Lever Pump ValveThe worst ever. I bought it because I wanted a higher quality valve than the plastic ones. Not. So much air comes out the joints and stems that nothing comes out the end. nothing! Do not buy.

I works well, no air leaks, sound construction, aesthetically pleasing, its just not very easily adjustable, its more of an ON/OFF then anything else, i will probably upgrade to a more adjustable unit later on.

This is a great gang valve. The knobs are easy to turn and very easy to control the air output. Unlike the Hagen Elite which was a piece of junk, valves needed a pair of pliers to turn it and air leaks from the knobs in the closed position. The only negative I have with this valve is that you can't hang it on aquarium otherwise a great gang valve.

I have a two port Air supply unit, but due to recent downgrades only need one air strip in my tank. This works great. I trimmed two short tubes to plug into hole one and three. I turned off hole two, plugged my bubble strip into the output and all was great.

When the air supply unit is off there is no back flow from the water which is great, the seal on the extra hole is holding well, and if I want to convert to a few toys and one main supply in the future this will work great!

Reef One Biorb Grass Ring

biOrb Small Grass RingDespite the fact that I thought this item was a little pricey, it does do wonders for my tank. I love the way it fits around the air pump and my African Dwarf frog loves hanging on the grass. And while it is a little big for my Baby BiOrb, it's an easy way to brighten up my tank.

This decoration really boosts the appearance of my biOrb. It is easy to clean and very cute. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to spice up the aesthetics of their aquarium. My betta fish likes it too as he frequently swims in and out of it.

I have several tanks and grass rings. Out of the double-digit species of fish, I only have seen the betta use it.

I love this product. I bought it because it was aesthetically beautiful and had great reviews, and I didn't let me down! The soft leaves are not only beautiful and natural looking, but they do not tear at my fragile betta's fins like many other artificial plants of inferior quality. I have a regular cube aquarium that is 1.5g with a single delta tail betta (Merman), and I will say that even a small grass ring is quite large. It fills a huge chunk of the middle, so if you have a tiny tank (smaller than 1.5g), I wouldn't recommend it. (I'm upgrading to a 6 gallon and mixing this decor with real plants so it won't be a problem). I shoved some sand over the bottom to make it appear like it was growing out of the sand. I really like that it is weighted in a ceramic ring there's not risk of it floating up and destroying the illusion of a real plant. Another huge plus of having this biOrb grass ring is that it is hollow in the middle, obviously because it is meant to fit over the air filter tube of a biOrb. In my non-biOrb tank, the hollow middle part serves as a very ingenious "cave" that my betta loves hanging out in, and sleeping in. It is so thick with hair grass that you can't see the hollow in the middle imagine my initial surprise when I was looking for Merman and he was nowhere to be found! Eventually he came lazily swimming out of his new hang out in the middle of the hair grass, it was hilarious. He adores it.

As a tip, it is definitely worth it to gently bend the leaves while doing that first rinse, so that they end up spreading outwards in the tank. It looks much more natural that way, and your fish will love swimming in and out of the leaves. The only con is that this is really expensive by fake aquarium plant standards, but the quality and fun of it all is priceless.

Want Reef One Biorb Grass Ring Discount?

This really enhances the visual appeal of the BiOrb. It also nicely hides the bubble tube and filter. My only complaint is that it is fairly sharp. I will be replacing it with a small BiOrb pebble sculpture, as I would worry less about my betta's fins.

Panacea Lustre Black Marbles - 100 Count

Panacea Lustre Black Marbles - 100 CountThese marbles should not be described as black at all.

Though in the picture they may look black, the only way you'll see them as black in person is if you turn off all the lights.

These marbles are gunmetal silver. If i wanted silver marbles, I would have looked for some, however, after spending 8+ dollars for 100 marbles that are NOT the color they are labeled, I am extremely disappointed.

Some look at these as regular marbles. I look at them as part of a working piece of art work.

The marbles came on time & in good order, however the "black" marbles aren't really "black", they are more like a mirrored blue/grey. If I were using them for a decor solution & wanted BLACK, I would be unhappy, but because these marbles make AWESOME slingshot ammo, I'm liking them big time!! To be honest, slingshot ammo is what I bought them for in the 1st place!!

Snoozer- Luxury Sofa Pet Bed - Large / Memory Foam

Snoozer Memory Foam Luxury Pet Sofa, Large, HerringboneI bought the bed for my Standard Poodle because she is showing some signs of age and stiffness. I put her new bed in the spot her old bed was and her old bed in a location near the new one just to see if she really liked the bed. She laid in the new bed as soon as it got out of the box. In the first week, she laid in her old one a couple of times, but now she sleeps, sits, chews her bone in the new bed every time she needs a spot to lay down. With her old bed, which was one of those cheaper beds with sides and about two inches thick, she hardly would use the bed except to look out the window. I usually found her in my bed if she really wanted to sleep. With the new bed, she even sleeps in the bed at night when I go to bed (she used to always sleep in the bedroom or on the bed at bedtime). She loves her new bed. On top of that, she is limping less. Well worth the money, in my opinion. Her old bed was a cheap bed that you can find in any pet store (cost about $40 for a large one). At our old house, she never used the old bed until we moved, and I believe the only reason she used it then was because it was the most comfortable spot to sit and look out the window. Like I said, she uses the new bed even at night which tells me she prefers it over my bed! Since the purchase of the bed, I have found her in my bed one time and that was a day after purchase. She is eight years old and still very active, but I decided to go ahead and buy this bed because she started limping more on her left front. She has always had occasional problems with the foot and usually overcame the problem on her own, but recently the problem has not gone away without the use of joint tablets. Even with the tablets she still limped a little bit especially in the morning so I purchased the Snoozer Memory Foam Luxury Pet Sofa. She now moves freely. Yes I still have to give her joint tablets but the bed has made all the difference for her and her comfort level. Snoozer Memory Foam Luxury Pet Sofa, Large, Buckskin

My 10 year old lab is starting to show signs of arthritis and recently had a leg injury ACL tear. I got him this bed and he LOVES it!! Our whole family laughs at how much time he spends in this bed instead of laying around the house. It is very clear he is so much more comfortable. He would only lay down in his old beds sometimes. We love seeing how happy he is with his new bed. (we also started the condroiton/glucosimine chewables and it's clear between the bed and joint meds our dog is much happier.

Coralife Super Skimmer with Pump

Coralife 05271 Super Skimmer with Pump, 65-GallonThis skimmer is probably the cheapest skimmer I could find for my 55 gal reef tank. And it works well. I'm sure you get what you pay for in some things, so itsn't as robust as some of the other skimmers. But does the trick. I empty the skimmer about twice a week. It hooks up fine. Only beef I have with it is that you need to unplug the unit before unscrewing the top collection bin to empty it. I always clean it with some paper towels when emptying it cause it gets a little stinky. I'd recommend this product to anyone doing thier first reef tank. Cause it's affordable. And we all know how expensive salt water tanks can be.

I have been running this skimmer on a 30 gallon tank for over a week now, it really works great. The skimmer only took 24 hours to break-in and now is pulling some dark smelly skimmate from my tank. I can see how easy it is to overflow the unit, which would be a problem for a hang on tank setup. It is easy to add an overflow modification to the collection cup. It was a little tricky to get the water level set right, but it is running great now. I would definitely recommend this skimmer to anyone. I purchased from petsolutions for $91 with shipping.

I have been running an AquaC EV-240 with a mag 12 pump for over a year on my 300 gallon fowlr tank, I will tell the AquaC is one of the best dry skimmers on the market, but thats all they do, I put a coralife 220 super skimmer in the sump beside the AquaC and I do have to say, I feel the Coralife with the needle wheel technology is a far superior skimmer over the high pressure injection of the AquaC, as the needle wheel pump creates far more smaller air bubbles, and we all know, the more bubbles means more contact for the skimmate to be removed more efficiently.

I purchased this skimmer to replace a Prizm skimmer. I am so much happier with it. It's been running for 2 years now and is going strong.

My main gripe with it is its adjustable flow-rate. It does have a dial for adjusting flow-rate, but I can't set it low enough. I run it on the lowest setting continuously. Many, many times after cleaning the skimmer and/or tank, the skimmer will fill the collection cup quickly with clean water. After the first filled cup or so, it settles back to the proper flow-rate and starts collecting scum again instead of tank water. Other than that, I'm happy. It fills the collection cup weekly, and the rate of skimmate (sp?) collection increases visibly every time I feed my fish, so it's very responsive.

Right out the box it took me a while to hook up this skimmer, guess it was easier looking at the photos on the box and assemble this unit. First putting it in the tank, it produced lots of bubbles both in the unit and most of all in the tank wow what a mess!! I have a 55g salt water with corals and fish I needed something to work well with my investments, anyway, I found out that the shorter house that's connected to the pump works best and produced right mixture of air and water, after running this thing for 3 days the fourth day it just magically start working as it should, it did say a break in period, just leave it turn off the light and go do something else. I did not have to cut anything to make it work, just a little patience that I didn't have at all, so leave the bubbles in the tank alone, I only had the inflow valve set on half, then when it start working well I opened it to full, and with the red water level was set to almost between 80-90%, hope this makes sense, but no bubbles in my tank at all, water is crystal clear and clean. I had the Prizm red sea skimmer and thought I had a good skimmer until I go this one, oh my gosh I emptied the cup 5 days after it started working properly, some serious gunk in there real dark green and smelly, it was pulling out stuff like a sewer, to really clean the cup you need to unplug and unscrew the cup then wash it, but there is also a leak valve at the bottom of the cup, there is a small tube for this, and that's what I use when I don't want to unplug and fully clean, this skimmer is so quiet and smoother, only sound you hear is the little bubbles going back into the tank from the bubble diffuser. I have been running it for 2 weeks now and no problem just save all your tubing and connections. Its a bit bulky expecially above my T5 light.

Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat

Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog TreatThe dog loves the bone and won't put it down. The only downside is that it smells really bad. I have yet to see the bone splinter and she has been chewing on it for two weeks.

My AmStaff/GSD mix is an active chewer. I'd rather he chew on things like bones and toys and not my things. So I invested in this bone (oh okay I bought it on a whim, let's be honest). IT IS HUGE. I was shocked, my dog seemed shocked, I wasn't sure if he was going to take to it. As I type, I can hear him sawing at the born. Totally a hit. Would recommend to anyone with a little guy (or a big guy!) who love to chew!

Buy Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat Now

I have a giant-breed dog who likes to chew and I thought, after reading other reviews, that this large chew would last her a good while. She certainly loved it. Even as big as she is, she had a hard time carrying it around, but it lasted no time. Within less than an hour she's disintegrated an entire head off one end of the femur and was sawing down on the rest of the bone.

Which is fine, I guess. Happy as can be.. but I've had much smaller bones last longer. And bought a whole box of hooves and had ONE last well over a week (the smell was even worse than these bones, though).

So, anyway. Yes, it's a hit.. but the duration is obviously going to depend on the size and determination of your dog (mine's a "soft mouth gripper" herding breed, btw.. not some wolf hound that likes to tear things to pieces for kicks and giggles..)

As for basic facts on the product itself (for those not familiar w/ chew bonesI wasn't until recently): They're greasy-feeling to the touch (you always have to wash your hands after touching them/getting them out of the wrapper for the dog); they smell pretty bad (fantastic to the dog, though); they've been smoked or something so there are baked-on flecks that are going to flake off all over your floors like crispy bits.. the dog will eat most of them, but you'll be sweeping/vacuuming behind him/her for quite some time and once the bone is finally broken down to bits, there will be shards (most often) and small round tiny bits that can be stepped on or hazards for small children (just be aware if you have them) and your vacuum that will have to be picked up by hand before vacuuming. Best for an outside treat (unless you have roaming neighborhood dogs that will steal them like I do.. she has to keep them inside and I just have to clean them up.. and a lot of the reasoning behind getting these things is to keep them from chewing inappropriate things IN the house). So they have their pro's (they WORK, they attract the dog's chewing attention very well) and cons (a freaking smelly mess).. I find it worth it but will find a different product (probably go back to hooves).

When I first took this bush out of the packaging, it didn't really look any different from the cheaper plants I had bought. So, I was a bit disappointed because the height of the branches were all the same and it didn't look as natural as the picture. However, after two days I love how it looks and it looks exactly like the picture now. The branches are much more spread out and it looks very very natural in my dark tank. Please note, the base of the jardin products is the most high quality in the industry. I love Jardin decorations in part due to the weight and attachments of the base holding the plant in place. I would order this product again with no hesitation. It really adds beauty to my tank. Hartz Wardley Goldfish Slow Sinking Crumbles, 1-Ounce

Hartz Wardley Goldfish Slow Sinking Crumbles, 1-OunceI have exotic gold fish in my pond and I use this food any time my fish reproduce and I have baby goldfish swimming around. At first, the little fish are afraid to come to the surface in my presence and can't swallow the bigger pellets that I feed the adults even if they did come up, so while the adult fish are eating their pellets, I sprinkle in these granules that slowly sink down. At first the baby fish just eat them off the bottom, but as they get used to the routine they start swimming up to get the granules before they hit bottom. Eventually, they are all swarming at the top together looking for granules and pellets as they are all trained to come at the approach of a person to get their meal now. The only problem is that the adults love this food too so you need to put in enough for both! I continue to use this food inside in the aquarium if the babies are still too small for pellets when I bring them in for the winter.

Como 5pcs Plastic Non-return Aquarium Air Pump Check Valves

Como 5pcs Plastic Non-return Aquarium Air Pump Check ValvesThese worked as desired in my 1/4-in air tubing; however, I had to take a razor and trim plastic tags that were left over from manufacturing. Not that big of deal, there it is.

I'm using these for a hydroponics application, and most of them work. I've had a couple that wouldn't let air through altogether, and it took me a second to realize the failing connection was one of these check valves.

That's just bad QC. Most of the valves I received weren't defective.

Of the working valves I received, I connected one to a deep water culture (for air bubbles) and the weight of the nutrient solution went right through the valve and backed up the airline (heading towards the air pump). Needless to say the air flow stopped. People use check valves so these kinds of things don't happen.

Also, the fittings on each side must be larger than 1/4", because these valves stretch out my 1/4" airline. After I was done with the valve, I had to cut off the small bit of connected airline because it was too stretched out to use (like throwing a hot dog down a hallway).

I didn't really know much about check valves when I ordered these, but it's been some time and I've tried different brands. These are my least favorite and I wouldn't order them again.

Fluval G3 Advanced Filtration System

Fluval G3 Advanced Filtration SystemLike most of you, I did a lot of research before I choose a filter. I have a saltwater 90 gal tank and has been going for three years. I won't get into what kind of filtration I had, but I needed to clean up the green haze in the water. I was not to fond of canister filters because of all the mess you have to go thru, but the Fluval G3 caught my eye. So, after hours of reading all that was available, AND reading all the reviews, I choose the G3. It arrived in two days and well packaged. I had downloaded the instructions on-line and carefully read them. BUT, the best thing I did was to go on YOU-TUBE and watch three vids on the installation of the filter. Before I started with the installation, I did a complete cleaning of the tank along with the standard water change. It was a mess. This would be a challange for ANY filter to take on this project. OK, here we go. I started at 3 pm and was ready to plug it in at 4:45PM. After reading a few reviews about a few problems with the PUSH BULB, I was a bit nervous, BUT I pushed it in a few times, saw the air bubbles come out the return, and plugged it it. AND ..... WALLA. It worked the first time, and with 100% flow. Impressive. I was going to write this review right away, but thought i'd wait for a few days to see if there were any issues. When I got up in the morning, the tank was CRYSTAL CLEAR. I was impressed. Its been four days now and the screen shows a small dip in the water flow. So, I said what the heck, lets pull the filter and clean it. I shut down the filter, lifted the handle, pulled the filter, cleaned it out, put it back into the G3, closed the handle, pumped the button two or three times, and plugged it back in. PRESTO, its back working again with NO mess. Pretty sharp if you ask me. My tank was a mess when installed the G3, so in the four days its been running, I expected to clean the filter sooner than later. Its going to be interesting to see how far the next will take me. OH YEA -The G3 is way quiet, my computer makes more noise than the filter. Am I happy with my decision??? You bet. Good luck in your quest for your next filter. The G3 has been a fine purchase for me.

I've been in the hobby more than 2 decades, and changing canister filters was always a PIA. No more. This little gem makes it easy easy easy, and DRY with its ingenious engineering. Plus, it offers a lots of add-on filter medium options, with 100% flow through. Add to that the cool built in computer read out that tracks with an easy to read line chart over the days the temp, ec, and flow rate flucuations and! blinks to alert you when the temp or ec falls above or below entered ranges... Well, nothing compares to it. My only regret is that it took so long for a company to finally figure out how to make a really good canister filter.

Buy Fluval G3 Advanced Filtration System Now

There's no doubt this filter clearly stands alone as the best filter on the market. The three complaints I've read are cost, flow rate and the pre-filter clogging after days of operation. The first, we'll it's been several years now since release and the cost has come down considerably and it's now cheaper than an Eheim Pro 3e and IMHO a better filter when you compare the prefilter option of foam vs Fine polishing media. Flow rate, Hagen's responded to this and claims its superior when you actually consider loaded flow rate, not just what a motor can pump. With regards to the filter clogging, think about it. Muck that was in your tank is now in the filter where it should be. On the other now antiquated filters out there maintenance, if they actually were trapping it, would be a pain, on this filter it's a 2 minute swap with a new pre-filter or 5 minute clean and replace if you prefer. I have a 46G Bow front with 4 African jack Dempseys and do find I need to clean the pre-filter every two weeks to maintain 100% flow rate. The flow rate graph is really nice for letting you know when to do maintenance, there's also programmable schedules for each media to help track and each with optional alert.

Easy maintenance is a key feature, but it's also allows you to quickly changes out your chemical filter to meet a specific condition. Algae starting to take foot, grab your phosphate filter and run it for a few days, nitrate to high grab the nitrate filter. Maintain them all with the triflex filter or use the optional replaceable media filter to use the media of your choice.

EC, time will tell but for now I'll take some indicator over the alternative of no indicator.

The lady that had a priming issue... make sure you prime before you plug it in..it makes ALL the difference as stated in the manual. Priming never been a problem for me, only takes two pumps. She either has a defective unit or didn't read the manual.

On the negative side I'm not thrilled with the suction cup intake and output tube fixtures. I have a film backing on my tank which precludes use of the rear suction cups and I don't want to cut it. I actually found reversing the clamp and putting the large plastic piece in the inside of the tank provides a more stable mount considering only one suction cup is used. I'd also prefer the output y-adapter to be a T-adapter if you planned to use the spray attachment. BTW, the filter comes with the nozzles attached to the y-dapter, you simply pull them off and push on the spray bars or you could have one nozzle and one spraybar if you like. You can get an inline alignment but it would work a bit better with a T then a Y. Both of these are really minor complaints, but they're the only negatives I have. I simply love this filter, it's made fish keeping a joy and a bit more fun as well.

-The G3 is an amazing filter. It is by far the easiest canister to maintain as the cartridges are removed and cleaned w/o even getting your hands wet w/ the brush.

-Dead quiet, and I mean it. You will not even be able to hear it running unless you stick your ear to it.

-LCD screen provides useful information as temp & conductivity, plus reminds you when its time for maintenance.

-Lots of included bio-media (G-nodes)

-Flow is stronger than you think, don't go by just the GPH. I would recommend this filter up to a 55 gallon max. by itself.

-Separate cartridges are sold, such as the Nitrate cartridge which is supposed to help lower and maintain nitrate.

The only thing I will say is that the intake tube isn't that strong, so in terms of picking up waste, it isnt that great by itself. However, an easy solution would be to add a powerhead (I used the aquaclear 50), and it really helps push the waste on the floor into the intake.

Before I purchased the G3, I was comparing/researching numerous amounts of canister filters.

The main problem that seems to be pretty common with many canisters (including some fluval products) is leaking.

The G3 is near impossible to leak, and it is sealed tight.

Just add a powerhead and this will be one the best and high-tech filters you've had.

I have bought two of these filters, the pump failed on one within six months, and the other is limping along until I can find a replacement. Forget about customer service, it's designed to make you give up trying. The pumps are a nightmare to prime, sometimes it takes more than an hour pushing the priming button and reseting the filter by uplugging it again and again before the "microprocessor controlled" pump decides to work. I have had to disassemble the pump probably more than two dozen times when the filter inexplicably shuts down and a "Check Impeller Rotor" message comes up, and yet nothing appears to be amiss. That's followed by the usual priming nightmare. In fact, getting the filter primed is such an unpleasent experience, you are reluctant to clean it. What fun! Then the delecate plastic "ears" on the mechanical filter snap off without any mishandeling, and it really doesn't keep the water that clean anyway. To all this is added the fact that the GPM is seriously overrated; I am sure it doesn't aproach half of what's advertzed.

The Fluval G3 is a clever concept, very, very poorly executed. Beware! Whay pay twice what other pumps cost for that? I never will again.

Marineland LED Aquarium Light

Marineland LED Aquarium LightAfter already once replacing some cheap starters and bulbs in my standard top over a 55 gal. tank, I got fed up and did a search for an alternative that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I spotted these LED units, reasonably priced. I bought 2 of them, and positioned them in place of the 18" fluorescent fixtures. They are very low profile, so they don't hide the filters, air and misc. on the back of the tank as well, but other than that, they sit very nicely on top of the tank, provide adequate (LED) lighting, and have a 'moonlight' setting which looks great at night. I'm pleased and would recommend these. Note, I have these over a freshwater tank, so I'm not supporting saltwater marine life. However, I do have some plants gathered from some local lakes that seem to be thriving under these lights.

Digital LCD Automatic Aquarium Tank Fish Food Feeder Timer

Digital LCD Automatic Aquarium Tank Fish Food Feeder TimerOnce I figured out how to fill it back up without spilling food everywhere it has been great. I use on a 55 gallon tank to feed twice a day. One less thing to worry about.

Quiet Flow Filter

Aqueon 06079 QuietFlow 55/75 Power Filter, 400-GPHI've used this filter for the last 18 months purely for mechanical/chemical filtration. I use a fluval 204 canister filter that has all three trays filled with biomax ceramic media to take care of all the biological filtration so I can't speak to that aspect of the Aqueon filter's function. As anyone with a decent amount of fish keeping experience will tell you counting on a HOB filter (with inserts of the type the Aqueon filter uses) for biological filtration is not ideal since when you change or clean inserts you lose most of your beneficial bacteria colony.

However in regards to it's mechanical and chemical filtration performance: this filter has a really powerful pump that moves a huge amount of water and thus it does a fantastic job of pulling floating particles in when they get within 2-3 inches of the intake. On the downside this means the filter inserts (it uses 2 at a time) clog very quickly and the thin cotton material used on the official Aqueon cotton/carbon inserts doesn't hold up well to attempts at cleaning it; therefore these inserts must constantly be replaced.

Thus I found using those official Aqueon inserts gets pretty costly, even ordering them with free shipping on Amazon where they are half the price of a brick and mortar pet store. But as a previous reviewer mentioned using cut-to-fit filter media such as the cotton "Marineland PA0100 Filter Pad" and a seperate bag of carbon greatly reduces the cost of changing the filter media so frequently. I myself prefer to use the cut-to-fit "Deep Blue Professional DB Activated Carbon Pad 18x10" which is made of a tougher, thicker and more densely woven material with carbon bonded directly to it. This material imparts three major advantages in it's use as a filter insert: A) the carbon bonding means every bit of water flowing through the filter insert is getting cleaned chemically as well as mechanically, B)because it's more densely woven the material works as a water polisher by trapping fine as well as course particles, and C) the toughness of the material means that when the inserts get caked with crud you can give them a thorough cleaning and re-use them multiple times without them falling apart.

Since I've begun using these cut-to-fit carbon covered pads as the media inserts in the Aqueon 55/75 it does an amazing, and much more affordable, job of working in conjunction with the canister filter and a 24 watt UV sterilizer to keep the water absolutely crystal clear in my 55 gallon tank which is stocked with 28 full grown Mbuna African Cichlids.

Other things to note about the Aqueon 55/75:

1) The pump is silent but the water itself makes quite a bit of noise as it flows into and through the filtration area. Imagine having the sound of a small but fast flowing stream in your room. Some may find it soothing, while others will find it overly loud and annoying.

2) As was also mentioned in another review; because the pump creates such good suction at the intake the filter really does wind up pulling in food faster than the fish can eat it if it's floating around. I combat this by using fast sinking pellet food dropped well away from the intake.

I absolutely love this filter. Most filters are really noisy, and since I have a fish tank in my room, this wasn't an option. I ran into the quietflow for a 20 gallon and was amazed by its results. It's blissfully quiet and does an amazing job at filtering. The additional plastic piece that allows beneficial bacteria to grow fits well and does a great job. I was so pleased with the quietflow that I replaced all my fish tank filters with it and haven't been happier!

I have a 75 gal tank and originally bought a Marineland Penguin 350 to get started, which turned out to be REALLY noisy (impeller/motor). Ended up returning it as defective and getting this Aqueon power filter instead.

This Aqueon is much better! Motor/impeller are VERY silent, and the water return is also virtually silent (I have the water level up to the lip of the return). I forget what it's called but there is a blue splash piece on the return of this filter that breaks up the water flow just enough that it 1) eliminates the sound of the water returning to the tank and 2) slows the water current a little on the way out which is good if you have some smaller fish or top feeders hanging around.

The filters come with carbon in them, but there's still enough room behind the cartridges in the filter box to place additional media if you want. I've added a couple of small bags with extra carbon and they fit pretty easily.

This filter uses additional hard plastic grids to help bacteria grow. Different than the spinning Biowheel design on the Marineland, but honestly I can't help but think this Aqueon design is going to be much easier to maintain.

The filter comes with an extension tube that is adjustable. You simply slide it up or down. Easy to use.

The only reason I have it 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is some slight (but pleasant) water noise where the water comes INTO the filter. So, technically it's not 100% silent but I think for a filter that pumps 400 gal/hr this is about the best they get. Mine is new so we'll see how it holds up over time.

Best filter I've ever purchased. My 55 gal. aquarium was really in need of major cleaning. This filter within one week totally cleaned the water crystal clear. Change the pads everyday for one week if your tank is really bad. After that, normal changes will keep it clean (once or twice a month). I am so glad I bought this item!
