Pump Motor Assembly for Eclipse 3 Hood

Pump Motor Assembly for Eclipse 3 HoodI don't know why they call this a pump motor assembly, when it won't pump anything without an impeller and an impeller housing. Had it actually been a complete pump, I would have given it 5 stars, hands down. That said, once I got it up and running, it runs much quieter than my orignal pump. I ended up using the impeller and it's housing from my old pump and now have a nice, quiet system, which is exactly what I was hoping to achieve.

I have had my 30 gallon show tank with the System 3 hood for about 8 or 9 years; the pump has always been a little noisy, buzzing and rattling the cover. After running across them on Amazon I decided to get another pump. When I first installed the new pump and plugged it in, it just made a bunch of loud racket and wouldn't pump any water. I contacted the seller through Amazon and they sent me another pump. Upon receiving the second pump, I decided to try it in a bucket of water before installing it. I installed the impeller and impeller housing, then the intake tube with it's strainer. I filled a bucket of water and stuck it in, but the bucket wasn't quite deep enough to get the pump going. I removed the intake tube and stuck the short tube of the impellor housing into the water and wha-la it worked right off the bat, nice and quiet too! I installed it in my tank and it started right up with no problems. Then I tried this same method on the first one, that I thought was bad and it too pumped water, quickly and quietly. So, if you think you have a received bad pump, try getting it to pump without the downtube on it before going through the hassle of returning it.

Beware, Amazon lists an impeller housing for the Eclipse 3 and Hex 5 and it is not the correct housing for the System 3! The Impellor Housing for the Eclipse 3 and Hex five are for their 3 and 5 gallon tanks. Be sure to get an impeller and impeller housing for the Eclipse System 3 Hood. It looks like the System 3 has been discontinued, as I don't see it listed on Marineland's website, and parts with the exception of filters, are becoming hard to find.

I hope this review helps some of you and saves you from the problems that I have encountered.

This item out of the box looks very good and similar to the original I own, (now 6 years old and still pumping). New pump will be used as the primary pump, and the old pump will be my back-up pump.

A good replacemnt for the price. I had trouble getting it primed. I thought it was defective but finally after 15 minutes got it running. I would buy it again as a replacement.

Our last pump finally died. The biggest thing I notice about this new one is that when it turns on, it is so quiet compared to the other. Probably the nature of the other one going bad but we occasionally turn it off by accident because it is on a light switch plug. Hit the wrong switch, oops, turn it back on. The old one would burble and gurgle for minutes trying to get the air out of it. This one is just back on and running smooth.
