Many complain that the manual is insufficient. Priming the pump seems to be the main issue. I learned a trick. After powering the pump, suck in and out on the air hose. I think it adds more suction pressure so that priming has more power. It should start immediately after that. This thing pulled out thick skimmate out of my 90 g.

I am running this skimmer on my 75 gallon reef system. As others have said, the documentation is poor, but the product is great. I have found that once the skimmer is primed, it can be turned off and back on again without priming if the aquarium water level is at its normal level. This is advantageous since I have it on an automatic timer so that for a few hours in the evening (TV viewing time) it is off. However, the sound level is not excessive for a protein skimmer. When I first started the skimmer it generated tons of bubbles, overflowing the collection area into the outfeed area. I needed to adjust the collection cup very high at this time. This "break-in" period for a protein skimmer is normal. After several days, it settled to a reasonable level and has been running great ever since. When I do my partial water changes in the aquarium, the water level drops to a point that requires the skimmer to be primed again. Its a little tricky getting it going again, but I am sure after a few more water changes I will understand better how to get the primed more efficiently.

Great product!! Skims very well. It takes a little while to break in however. Instructions are horrible. But would recommend to others!

I bought this protein skimmer for my 75 gallon tank because I do not have enough room in the sump for one of the in-sump skimmers (I have since turned my sump into large refugium that only houses the heater and GFO reactor). I know that it says it needs to have at least 2 days to break in, but it was pulling out a dark, thick skimmate from the first day that it was working. I chose not to use the sponges that came with the unit, but I still do not have any issues with microbubbles going into the main tank. It is fairly quiet, and I would say VERY quiet compared to the other skimmer that this replaced on my tank. It is strong and durable with a very powerful pump. No leaks and no issues thus far. I am very pleased with this skimmer and I would recommend it to anyone who has a tank 100 gallons or less who does not have enough room in the sump for a comparable sized in-sump skimmer.
