I really like undergravel filters for filtration. It's old school tech and if you go with some plants, it will fertilize them. I've had systems setup where I didn't have to change water for 6 months because of the balance between plants and the filter. Just topping off. Just beware of some of the colored gravel. I bought some from petco that broke down in 2 months and mass killed all the fish in my tank. I've got the filter in another tank with different gravel and it's working fine.

This is the exact same Penn Plax plates I used about 20 years ago. Very little changes have been made over the years... :) They STILL have the same issue with holding the plates together, at least long enough to get them into the bottom of the aquarium. Penn Plex COULD do a little more design work on the molds to fix this problem.....this of course will NEVER HAPPEN.

Bought this for my turtle tank and it is a time saver! His tank is so much easier to maintain. Easy set up, clear instructions. For the price of the 10 gallon filter, I would highly recommend this.

Please note: For turtle pet owners who don't believe in gravel for turtles, please don't get into a huge debate with me as there are clearly polarized opinions. I've been using gravel for my turtle for ~1 year and he's been happy and healthy.
