So this sand is great! So I couldn't wait to get this in my tank. I rinsed it until the water ran clear, and put it into my tank. A word of advice, after putting into your tank and filling with water, I would do a 50% water change, b careful though you don't want tis to jam or ruin your filter, mine being a bio wheel, it could ruin the propeller. Turn of your filter until all the sand settles. In my case I had a second internal filter that I used. Anyhoo my tank looks great and I will update after a month or so and some cleaning to let you know how well that goes. Till then. Thanks

Oceanic 36011 BiocubeMini Ultraviolet Sterilizer, 5-Watt

I've struggled for years to control the algae in my 14 gallon saltwater Oceanic Biocube. Keeping the tank light off, removing 1/2 the bioballs and replacing them with live rock rubble, installing a protein skimmer, and doing weekly water changes (25%) helped control the algae, but didn't entirely cure the problem. After much reading on various aquarist blogs and forums, in my quest for a solution, I purchased the Oceanic Mini Ultraviolette Sterilizer. I wasn't sure that 5 watts would be strong enough for my tank (9 watts is said to be better), but it proved to be just fine for my small tank. Once I got the hose cut to the correct length, the Sterilizer installed in only a few minutes with the use of tools. I've had the Sterilizer installed for nearly a month now, and the tank water is crystal clear. The fish seem much happier too, since they no longer need to live in the dark. I read that the UV bulb needs to be changed every 6 months to retain effectiveness, so I'll be sure to do that. If you struggle with algae in your tank this Sterilizer is a worth buying because it works as promised.

A friend had told me that ultraviolet sterilization was the only way to get crystal-clear aquarium water. He recommended a $50 Fluval sterilizer that I could only find online; I didn't want to wait so I bit the bullet and picked up this model at a local pet shop.

I grimaced a bit at the $89 price tag but I was desperate: My 30-gallon tank was so murky from a stubborn bacteria bloom that I couldn't even see the back of it.

The following day I noticed a BIG difference. Five mornings after installing this sterilizer, I had CRYSTAL-CLEAR water!

This is a great compact effective sterilizer for nano cubes up to 29 gallons. It's crafted specifically for Oceanic/Coralife Biocubes, but includes a universal adapter for other nano cubes. If you have a Biocube, this will hook up to existing pump. If you don't have Biocube, then you need to have a pump. Recommend Cobalt Aquatics MJ1200 which is original Maxijet still built in Italy. Works great and has kept my saltwater crystal clear. The biggest mistake that many people make is to run cheaper sterilizers on 24/7 basis. This will only result in burning out bulbs quickly, but you don't really need round the clock sterilization. I run mine for only 24hrs weekly and is effective. The more expensive high-end sterilizers ($200) have better build quality and can handle being run 24/7. Keep this mind when using any inexpensive sterilizers and you'll be alright. Keep an extra bulb on hand too.

I was disappointed to find that this ornament was in fact boring. After finally burying the rather large clear plastic base under the gravel the only part to move in the whole thing was the bottle. That would go up, stay up and then eventually come down again. Not the most fun ever.

The skull or the other limbs could have been movable making the ornament much more fun.

My fish have eaten these pond flakes for years and do extremely well on them. I live in Nebraska where the winters are very cold. My goldfish and koi stay in their pond all winter with a heater in the pond to keep an open hole in the water. I do not feed them during the coldest times as they are not very active. I buy a lot of this product for my large pond. The price is great compared to local outlets but you do have to by a large number of canisters ( 11 = $50 + dollars ) to get free shipping. Otherwise the price with shipping added is not that great a savings. I would recommend this, but again, if you can afford to purchase (11) at once.

Eclipse Aquarium Filtration and Lighting System

I recently purchased this hood and paired it with a 20 gal glass tank. This is my first tank and I've found it to be very easy and hassle free. The tank stays very clean and clear and the fish seem to be very healthy and happy. It may be a little pricey compared to a standard setup, but for me, the ease of use and convenience of having everything in one package is worth it. And the top access makes maintenance easy. I currently have 5 zebra danios, 6 cory cats and 3 oto cats in the tank and all seem to be doing very well. I would highly recommend this item for the beginner.

I would also highly recommed purchasing and studying several books on fishkeeping (I bought and read at least 4) before purchasing any system and definitely before purchasing any fish!

Yes, I noticed the rattling problem with the pump. It seems that if the impeller isn't inserted just right then there is this really annoying grating noise that over time will drive you nuts. But the solution is simple, take it apart, make sure everything is clean and spinning freely and just start it up again (something you will need to do anyway from time to time for maintenance).

I find the filter setup to work well though, and the overall design to be quite good.

The lighting? Whether you like it or not depends on whether you want real plants or not. 36 watts for a 25 gallon tank, like mine, is not going to cut it. So you have to find a retrofit system. Sunpaq has some options, but you're going to have to be fairly handy with some tools.

I ended up just removing the stock lighting and then cutting out a slot from both the front and back lift up covers and sticking a Coralife 130w unit over the top of the whole thing. About 5 watts per gallon will "get-er-done".

My advise to the Marineland people is to have some different lighting options available for their all-in-one hoods. I think they'd sell more, or at least be able to sell some retrofits or upgrades once people figure out that the stock system has these limitations. As is, the retrofits are coming from other companies.

I bought the thing because the sales dude told me I could upgrade the lighting later. He either knowingly lied, or didn't explain that I would be looking at an exciting retrofit project. ;o)

I purchased this tank 9 months ago and have been fairly happy with it. It looks nice. I love the rounded corners which look much better than the glued glass panes. The acrylic material is still holding up, but I am a lot more careful cleaning it than with glass. The only problem I've had with this unit is a rattling noise that seems to come from the hood. It can be quite for 10 minutes to a couple of days. Then it starts rattling. I adjust the hood and it goes away. Lately, in the last couple of weeks the pump has started with some serious rattling which I can't get rid of. It annoys me and I am sure the fish are even more annoyed. I cleaned the impeller and every surface of the pump, but without luck. So I think I have to go buy a new pump.

This is my second Eclipse 3 [not 2 as sold above] for my 29-gallon tank. I love the convenience of it, etc. But the hood light has never properly worked -not on the first one, which I had for nearly three years, nor on the new one. Only one bulb illuminates -unless you take the darned thing apart and do quite a bit of maneuvering daily. Just thought I should share that with all.

We recently replaced our under gravel filter system with an Eclipse 2 lid. It truly is a complete mechanical, chemical & biological system all in one. These units are reminiscent of childhood and plastic dinosaurs and in no way look like the natural image that the company shows on the box. While this unit (and the small and large ones) are cheesy in one respect, they are useful for amphibians like small newts or African dwarf frogs that need to rest on their way up to the surface to breathe. It allows me to have a higher water level in their tank, which keeps the water cleaner for longer, while not stressing the amphibians out. They get a five because of the utility. Laguna Max-Flo 4200 Waterfall & Filter Pump, PT-352

Very happy with this pump.

Pros:

Quiet: I hear my air pump (which I consider to be very quiet) over the sound of this water pump.

Efficient: I am running this pump at 9' of head pressure and my kill-o-watt shows that it's drawing 155 watts. I believe it is pushing around 2,000 Gallons Per Hour at this head height.

Price: I bought 2 of these a few months ago for $200 each (looks like prices have gone up to $220 as of this review). Even at $220, this is still cheaper than pumps that have similar specs (PondMaster Pro Hy-Drive or Sicce Syncra HF).

No Seals: Unlike direct drive centrifugal (external pumps) you don't have to worry about seals failing with this pump.

Quality: The pump feels and looks to be well made.

Cons:

The "fast coupling" attachment is a bit cumbersome to use.

I had a heck of a time trying to get my 1.5" hose onto the barbed fitting.

Using the Laguna Max Flo 4200 and a Laguna Max Flo 2400 for my 300 gallon aquarium with a 125 sump. The aquarium is in my office and the pumps are extremely quiet. I used flexible hose to connect them to the plumbing. No vibration, no sound. At 5' of head, I'm assuming I'm getting 3,000 gph from the 4200.

Laguna is a brand in pumps I have worked with for quite some years now. The new "cage" style pumps are indeed nice in regard to handling solid waste appropriately in your pond meaning the pumps do well at not getting clogged up by debris. These pumps are also powerful and use less electricity to move water than most other push pumps do. However, finding the appropriate fittings (such as quick connects) is an inconvenience because one: they are hard to find, and two: it is very difficult to know what "size" you really need for hose size adaptation, etc. once you do locate them. Also, in many applications I have found getting hosing onto the fittings to be a real bear as a lot of heat or Vasoline is needed to complete this tight task! Nevertheless, it's your choice. If you want to try Laguna brand pumps, order them easily and much cheaper through AMAZON.COM. Nowadays you won't find these products at any retail operation.

As soon as I hooked this pump up to my 150gal filter systems I knew it could do the job. It not only ran on less juice than My previous German pump but pumped a higher volume of water. The slots on the pump housing however were narrower so it has plugged up a couple of times which amounts to a higher rate of plug-ups over time. I had hoped for a less blocking prone pump but I guess no one pump does it all. The German pump I had before lasted 7 years so it will be quit some time before I can rate this pumps longetivity but I am hopeful because the build quality seems good. In short I think this pump is a great performer for the price and I just hope it holds up over the long haul.....

Nova Extreme T5 X2 for Freshwater 48Inch

I was expecting a cheaply built light for the price I paid for it but I was very surprised by what I got. The T5 lighting is by far, brighter than the lights that normally come with typical fish tank. I originally had two 24" plastic fixtures on my 55 gallon tank with a single 18" T8 flourescent light in each fixture. At 30 Watts overall output from both lights, that did not suffice to light my tank and supply light to the plants I wanted to grow. The Nova Extreme fixture comes with two 48" T5 flourescent lights putting out an overall 110 Watts. By far a big improvement from what I had. The desired Watts per gallon range for a planted tank is between 2 to 3 Watts per gallon. At 110 Watts, this fixture gives about 2 to 2.5 depending on how many decorations and rocks you have inside a 55 gallon tank.

Quality wise, the fixture is mostly metal with a plexiglass insert infront of the lamps to prevent moisture from damaging the unit. Although, some sites say the 48" Fixture comes with a fan to cool the lights, mine did not. But it only gets warm to the touch and isn't a big concern. The reflector is polished metal and increases the light output pretty well. The only thing that I didn't like was the mounting legs to sit it ontop of the tank. They were made of plastic and feel like they would break if to much force was put on them. Overall, a great light fixture.

I bought this light for my planted aquarium, and it's working very well. It was one of the least expensive options, but it seems well built. Setup was easy. I didn't find anything else that was even comparable at this price. The other fixtures I considered were at least $30 more.

The only negative is that now I want one for my other aquarium. I never realized how dim a typical aquarium canopy light is until I got this light.

I bought this to replace an All-Glass T12 twin tube light fixture for a 55 gallon fresh water live plant tank. The T12 twin tube never produced quite enough light for my plants and T5HO's produce maybe up to twice as many lumens. It looks much brighter. I have the Nova sitting directly on Aqueon (All-Glass) twin tube style Versa-Tops. I did not install the legs (docking mounts) as I want all light to enter the aquarium and personally I just don't like the elevated style. This has worked well and the Nova looks really nice when set up this way. The 48" Nova has a single ballast, and despite some website's information and pictures, has no fan, no side bracket, and comes with a 12,000 K tube instead of the listed 10,000 K tube. Dimensions: 47.5" long X 5.5" deep X 2.1" tall.

The NOVA Extreme is a well built fixture. It does get hot when used under a canopy, but have had no issues. Ballasts are easy to exchange out is well. Only a screwdriver and some patience are required. I highly recommend this fixture. Mine was used in a freshwater setup. When you order, be sure to select the model that comes with the lamps for your setup.

I had to put 8 drops of this in my betta's tank since he's in a one gallon and the direction says 1 drop per 16 oz. This does work, but the only thing is the water does turn blue. It doesn't look bad, just odd. My betta doesn't seem to have a problem with it and is acting normal despite the color.

I had some translucent white issue (I think was parasites) that I couldn't get rid of with one of my betta fish. I tried aquarium salt & it helped, but didn't get rid of it...this medication did. I would definitely use again, didn't harm any of my fish in any way.

I use this product regularly in 2 freshwater aquariums. This is a busy household and we don't do as many water changes as we should. So I keep both an under gravel and an over the tank filter and use stress zyme every other week or so. One of the tanks has fancy goldfish, and one goldfish has grown to carp size and he eats a lot and messes a lot. There is a more delicate fish in the goldfish tank that starts to suffer when I need to add stress zyme, long before the tank actually looks dirty. Once I add the stress zyme he perks right up. The second tank is bala sharks with a red tail and an angel. This tank seems healthy, but I throw in some stress zyme when I do the other tank because its a huge tank and its hard to vacuum. And the tanks stay nice with only about 6 water changes per year. We change the filters at about the same rate, but need to add tap water every week (the tanks are great humidifiers, they never get moldy like a real humidifier does!) Anyway, I recommend this product to anyone with a fish tank but no time or desire to do weekly water changes.

If you are encountering issues with managing turtle waste, this is a great addition to a canister filter. I have a turtle in a 45-gallon tank with a Rena FilstarXP2. Turtle waste still floated to the top and became a major hassle to clean. The problem became worse and I was concerned for my turtle who sleeps on a underwater dock near the surface. After visiting the Rena site, it directed me to#Performance. It suggested this bacteria supplement. Since using it, the water became clear again and no waste floated at the top. I have no need to clean the tank except for changing half of the water half-way through the month and a full change at the end of the month. And Steve is happy to swim to the surface again!
