Marineland PA11486 Canister Filter Bio-Balls PC 160-360, 90-BioBalls

I bought these for a DIY airlift filter (using PVC pipe) and needed smaller sized balls. The only place that indicated the size was at a major pet store website that indicated that they are 3/4" in diameter. This is incorrect. The actual size is 21mm (0.83") in diameter so i had to use 1" PVC pipe for these to fit into.

These bio-filter balls have lots of surface area for bacteria to colonize, much much more than ceramic rings. The surfaces, both outside and inside, have a slightly rough texture which is important since the bacteria will have something to cling to. The multiple channels provide a lot of water flow that allows nutrients to reach and support the bacterial colonies.

The only complaint is that some of the balls are not fully formed. The plastic was not fully injected into the molds which reduced the amount of surface area and is not textured. They still work and won't be seen while inside a filter.

Not all bio-balls are created equal. I originally purchased some other (cheaper) bio-balls but it had a noxious smell so I immediately returned them. It used low quality plastic that leached toxic compounds into the air and water (which may be carcinogenic or mutagenic to your fish), did not have any texture, and had a design that limited water flow. These Marineland bio-filter balls, however, don't have any smell, appear to use quality plastic, are lightweight, are textured, and support large bacterial colonies.

If you are deciding between these bio-balls or other ones, I recommend choosing Marineland. You'll be getting a quality product that you'll know will be safe for your fish.

These bio-balls float. Depending on your filter setup, you may need some kind of enclosure like a mesh bag to keep them in place or they will float to the surface.

This bioballs are great for cannister filters, you would thnik that 90 bioballs are to much, but they are really small in comparison to the standard size, so they are great because they give you a huge surface to the bacteria grow and doesn't ocupied a big space, in cannister filters this is quite an advantage.

I love balls.

I do not trust sintered glass or ceramic biomedia claims about each piece having the surface area of Brazil. Water and oxygen won't flow through these microcrevices and nanoholes after the biofilm covers them up, so you really only have the surface of the object itself. These seem to work fine for all my tanks I have them in Fluval 305/6 filters on heavily planted and VERY overstocked tanks with 8 to 10 times the tank volume moved per hour. They don't clog, they are always covered in lovely disgusting slimy bacterial slick that never goes all death-stinky, and the water is so clear you would never know you are looking at a fish toilet.

But do please pay attention to what you are buying. They usually tell you how big they are, so read and don't be surprised.

It would be nice, though, if they would give you the VOLUME of balls, as I doubt anybody is looking for a specific number of balls, just enough to fill a filter basket that can hold [this much] balls.

I had the hardest time finding the size of these bioballs because it doesn't say it anywhere, even on the Marineland website. Turns out they are the small kind, a little over 1cm in diameter and to be used for the Marineland canister filters. They are pretty decent, though I wish they could have molded in a different color plastic because with a light color plastic you can actually see the film of bacteria on them.

Aqueon AQE36007 Biocube Ultraviolet Algae Sterilizer for Aquarium, Mini

Mini UV #1 started going on and off as it deemed necesssary until in a little over a month, stopped working.

Mini UV #2 as I plugged it it, it flashed yellow, and went out. Bulb this time.

I took one half from one, and the bulb from another and it has been working for a week.

Pet Solutions were no help and basically told me to contact Oceanic.

Wont be buying a third. Definately not from Pet solutions.

This product is a nice sterilizer and can be used in a wide variety of applications, even though it was designed for BioCubes specifically. If you're interested in this product then I would recommend you buy it; there is no reason I can find not to.

I am using this UV Sterilizer in an older model BioCube 14 Gal. I had one of the previous models of this unit and they work very well. The older unit had the indicater window on the top of the unit and it was small. You had to open the top of the BioCube to check if the UV light was working. The newer model has a larger window on the side of the unit, large enough that I can peak through the water line window on the side of the BioCube and actuly see the glow from the window showing that the bulb was in good working order.

I ordered a new one, not because the first unit had stopped working but because the 90 degree angle plastic that connects the unit to the discharge port cracked and it was only an extra 20 to get a new unit after the bulb blew. I only gave the unit four stars because of that angle peice didn't have an improved plastic material or better fit so I am hoping it wont crack agian.

I put this in my Biocube 14. Every time I do a water quality check, it's perfect. I have a friend who has the same thing. His bulb went out within the first month for some reason (I think it was operator error). He called the company, and without any issue, they sent him a whole new replacement unit...not just a bulb. This is a great compact effective sterilizer for nano cubes up to 29 gallons. It's crafted specifically for Oceanic/Coralife Biocubes, but includes a universal adapter for other nano cubes. If you have a Biocube, this will hook up to existing pump. If you don't have Biocube, then you need to have a pump. Recommend Cobalt Aquatics MJ1200 which is original Maxijet still built in Italy. Works great and has kept my saltwater crystal clear. The biggest mistake that many people make is to run cheaper sterilizers on 24/7 basis. This will only result in burning out bulbs quickly, but you don't really need round the clock sterilization. I run mine for only 24hrs weekly and is effective. My 10 month old Yorkie just came into heat for the first time. I had disposable dog diapers, but they were too bulky (made for actually urinating in) not just the little bit she bleeds. Therefore, I ordered the size Small and they fit pretty good since they have velcro that you can adjust. I just use the doggie pads or even a human panty liner or pad cut in half if its too big. Not to mention she likes to chew on anything she can get her little mouth on and she has yet to chew on these cover-ups and she has been wearing them 6 days now. I would highly recommend these for your dog in heat, I would just be careful on what size you order. Petsmart also has the same one's, but they are more expensive in the store than what they are here on amazon. For instance the size small in Petsmart are $18.99 and on Amazon I got them for $13.68. Just remember the larger size, the more expensive.

I have a little Shi Tzu, she weighs less than albs so I ordered the xs first, it was too tight, probably due to all of her fur I would get this one for a chihuahua or similar short coat dog. I reordered the small which is perfect with room to expand with the velcro. We cut a sanitary napkin in half and place the open side facing toward her tail. It works great with no leaks and much cheaper than the liners and more absorbent. My little dog is trained for pads but leaks when she's excited so these work good. Of course if we forget and leave it on too long she pees in it. This has only happened a couple of times but when it did, no problem, no leaks. Oh what we do for our furry friends!!!!

Nice price for a two pack of washable dog diapers. However, they are sized way too small. These x-small ones look like they would fit a squirrel! I had to return and order a size larger. They are very thin and flimsy, however, if you use a women's minipad in them, they could do the job. One of my dogs can get them off, so it depends on the dog as to whether they will work for you.

I like having the washable, reusable doggie diapers rather than throwing money away on disposable. I would suggest skipping the Simple Solutions liners that are sold to go with the diaper and simply buying feminine hygenie pads. Cut them in half and they work perfect and are much more absorbent.

My fish have eaten these pond flakes for years and do extremely well on them. I live in Nebraska where the winters are very cold. Update 9/27/12: Like a fool, I bought another thinking it was a fluke the first time. It happened again after a few months. Do not buy this product. The quality is just horrible. I bought a bulb first, think it was that. What a waste.

Finnex Temperature Controller Electronic Heater

I needed to fix my made in Italy submersible glass heater I bought

from a large pet supply chain store. Initially it was 4 degrees F hotter

than its settings, and a few weeks later, by the time I bought this controller,

it would vary up to 10 degrees more before I manually modulated it (plug/unplug).

After adding this controller, the tank's water temperature stays contant

within 0-1 degree F. Setting on the dial is about 2F lower than my

thermometer's reading, but that's easy to deal with. This setup will work

as long as your heater produces full heat on one of its sensible settings.

If my heater completely fails to heat someday, I can be assured the

replacement heater can't overheat the tank either with this controller working.

One wish would be for some way to detach the probe (e.g. quick connect)

to make tank maintenance easier, as long as it stays reliable.

(An unpluggable temperature probe works for my electric wall oven.)

Recommended for anyone using electric heaters for their tank.

It prevents a heater's built in thermostat sticking on from cooking your fish.

If your thermostat control is poor but turns on, this unit can replace that feature.

I've been using this temperature controller on my 210 gal salt setup with an 800W JBJ titanium heater after the expensive JBJ digital controller died after only 6 months of use. I'm not a big fan of digital controllers as the are very suscetable to power line issues, surges and brown outs and such. I did have teh JBJ unit plugged into a smal UPS to protect it from such interference but it still failed anyway. Must have been poor quality. Not what you expect for a $200 heater pachage. So far the analog HC-0800 Finnex controller has worked flawlessly. The unit looks and feels very high quality and is doing just as good a job as the JBJ digital controller for a fraction of the price. It still needs to pass teh test of time but I have a feeling it will.

Aqueon Circulation Pump

I bought this to blow the debris that started accumulating on the fine sand substrate in our 30 gallon tank. I run it on a cheap Harbor Freight mechanical timer so it will go on occasionally for a little bit as running all the time it was waaaay too powerful for the tank, creating dunes in the sand and overpowering the fish. But as an occasional "stir up" to keep the tank crystal clear, this pump works great. Now instead of fish poop, uneaten food, and other little bits littering the bottom of the tank and needing vacuuming the tank stays looking pristine with no action.

Great little pump. It provides a wide, thorough flow throughout the tank and consumes an unbelievably low amount of power. It's also dead silent. The mount keeps it well in place. I suppose the only criticism I may offer is that the mounting system is not magnetic like a Koralia and therefore the pump takes up a bit more space as a result. No biggie, this is a really nice pump.

a bit bulky, but this thing is POWERFUL! Put it in my 75g saltwater tank & it was night & day...tons of waterflow now. The suction cup works nicely & the joint allows it to pivot nicely. Makes the water in the tank circulate throughout nicely. Might even be too powerful..the zooanthids were a little shocked by the fast flow.

I purchased two of these for my 180 gallon salt water tank. The flow is very good and with two pumps, it produced a lot of flow in my 180 gallon. I am giving it 3 stars because after 3 months, one of the pump has a broken swivel neck. The part that the pump connects to the suction cup and pivots broke and the pump just hangs limp now.

This filter does a good job cleaning and aerrating the water in my turtle tank...however, I have to relocate my turtle when I run the filter...it causes a whirlpool effect and the poor thing is pushed around in a circle swimming for its life. Was hoping it could be run with the turtle in it but not possible. I now remove the turtle to a different receptacle for the night while the filter runs. This is working out..but not as convenient as I was expecting. But I do recommend it if you have the turtle swamp cause it does do a good job when it is on. Vendor was very prompt in sending product and it arrived in fine shape....easy to operate as well.

I bought one of these filters more than 7 years ago to use in a community tank with small fish, frogs and a toad, and it is still running strong. What I really like is that the filter base opens easily and all sorts of media can be used as needed -from bio to mechanical, to ammo-block and charcoal. The original impeller is still in this unit and shows very little wear to this day, and it's been operating 24/7 since I got it (excepting down time, of course, to clean it and replace filter media). No other filter has worked this well for so long.

I bought this filter to keep my terrarium's water bowl clean since I usually try to keep a couple gold fish in their in case my water dragons get hungry. This bowl holds approximate 1-1.5 gallons of water and is about 2.5 inches deep and has river rocks on the bottom. My first dissapointment was that the filter did not come with any sort of instructions. Then when I put it into the bowl I found the results simply disappointing. It did not keep the water any cleaner than putting a sponge on the end of an air hose. I reccomend to anyone who is considering purchasing this filter DON'T.

I used it in the Tom's Swamp for a couple of quarter size hatchlings. I never planned on it being a long term use filter by any means but it couldn't even handle the swamp which it was made for. I still have extra filter refills but I don't ever plan on using this again. Waste of money.

Its very very small, and it sinks too fast. It gets trapped into the small spaces of the gravel and most of it is wasted. For a pellet this small, it should float so the fish can actually eat it. The ingredients are great and my fish do like NLS; I just won't buy "All Purpose" again.

Como 2 Pcs Fish Tank Air Bubble Airstone Bar 8" Green Blue

This product is no good. First of all the bubbles all come from a crack at the closer end to the tube. The only time any bubbles at all come out of the actual stones is when you position it just right and even then 95% of the bubbles are still coming out of the crack and not the stone.

Second I went to pet smart, and you can get a similar product that probably works better for the same or less money. And atleast if you're unhappy with it you can take it back there.

I recommend just picking up that not this.

I have a 75 gallon freshwater aquarium, and needed to upgrade from my old, clogged up bubble wands to something that produced more agitation on the surface and provided more cover (privacy) for my fish.

I usually shop for prime eligible items only, and no complaints at all about the packaging or delivery. It arrived on time today.

These seem sturdy enough, but one of them had a corner of the plastic base chipped completely off, nowhere to be found in the packaging. Not a big deal, because I planned to hide them under the gravel anyways, and it doesn't interfere with operation (no air leaks that I can see).

My biggest complaint is that the bubbles only make it out of the first 2-3 inches of the wand, that's why I only gave 4 stars. These don't give my fish the cover they need. I'll update if it improves with longer operation or when I upgrade my air pump.

UPDATE---2/21-After running this product for a few months with one wand on a single pump I can say now that the bubbles do come out of the entire wand. My old air pump was probably the issue.

Not the best Bubble Bar I have ever owned. If you dont know in a larger tank say 29 gallons and above you need a Bubble Bar that has really fine bubbles because that is what Aerates the water and the deeper the tank the more air it needs. These have very large bubbles reducing the Air in the tank...... Now I have a Planted tank on top of of Double Sided Bio Wheel which all assist in the Air in the tank so I am not worried about it. But if you have anything larger than a 29 gallon tank with Artificial Plants I would look at some thing else honestly.

I purchased 4 of these. I've been running these for several weeks with a Tetra 40 gal air pump ( 2 stones per pump). They produce a few large bubbles. Definitely not the fine mist along the bar I was hoping for.

As a kid I used a two-foot long scrub stick to clean my ten-gallon aquarium, most of the time scaring the fish while dragging decorations that got stuck to it, and the usual trail of water dripping as I took it out to wash and put away. So I clearly intrigued when first saw this product.

The floating magnet is a two part gadget that uses magnets to keep a "handle" piece attached on the outside of the aquarium as the "scrub" piece is on the inside part of the glass--sliding the handle back-and-forth scrubs the sediment. Separating the pieces leaves the scrub part floating. The surface of the pieces is smooth so that it does not pull things or damage plants and fish.

I really like when a product meets expectations, working exactly as advertised, and this is it.

There is, however, something to note and the reason why I do not consider it perfect. The color is light-gray, and since it sits inside the aquarium, it does not blend well. This is strickly a matter of taste, but worth mentioning.

Overall, a great product, and a permanent addition in my shopping list when setting up an aquarium.

Really great product, removes algae from the glass very efficiently, without having to wet your arms and the floor around the tank! the magnet is extremely strong, even if the inside part is away from the glass, once you approach the outside part to the glass, the inside part comes right away!

Just beware if you have very fine substrate, because if you get very close to the bottom, some of the substrate can get caught in the scrub and before you know it, you got a big scratch in your glass!

Remember the old days of lumbering to clean the glass of your tank? You had to buy a special extended length algae scraper which didn't work well so you had to stick your hand into the tank and scrub the sides with an algae pad. After you were done, you had to stand there with a soaking arm mumbling how sucky it was to clean algae.

Then came the magnetic scrubber. It was a definite improvement, except that the scrubber would separate on the inside of the tank and fall to the bottom just out of the magnetic force-field's range. This would require you to stick your hand into the tank and put the scrubber back together, leaving you standing there with a soaking arm thinking how cleaning algae was still kinda sucky.

Then came the Mag Float Magnetic Cleaner.

I first encountered this item at a local fish store when the shop keeper scrubbed the front of the tank of the fish I was going to buy. As is the case with magnetic scrubbers, the scrubber separated. But as is the case with the Mag Float, the scrubber floated to the top of the tank where it could be easily reattached without getting the hands wet. I chose to spend my money on the Mag Float rather than the fish.

That was about a decade ago and I have always had a Mag Float for every tank I have ever kept since then (which has been alot of tanks). This item is an absolute necessity for the discerning fish keeper. Are there other things that can do the job? Yes. Are there other items that work as well as the Mag Float? No.

Coming from a man that has been joyfully learning about aquariums and keeping fish for fifteen wonderful years, spend the extra money and get a Mag Float, you won't be disappointed.

P.S. get the size bigger than your recommended size, it is worth it. Acrylic tank owners beware, these guys can really do some serious scratching.

I just got this today and tested it out on my tank which had a buildup of algae on the glass. The magnets are STRONG and quick and got my fingers almost a dozen times in that many minutes. The glass does look better (could be better but it works better than a scrub brush), but then maybe it's more noticeable if you have REALLY bad algae problems, I mean if your tank is downright filthy. Mine is noticeable (clear water but the glass makes it look cloudy) but not awful. After using the magnet I did a 30% water change and wiped the inside of the tank with a paper towel there was still some algae on the tissue so this definitely does not get it all. One thing I don't like is how it scraped at the silicone holding the tank together (made an awful scratchy noise, and no there was no gravel in the way, it only did it when I wiped near each of the 4 corners), so I am going to try not to go near the corners with it in the future!

** Also, it says on the packaging NOT to use it if you have a PACEMAKER. I do not but I can't believe it did not mention this on the product page people with pacemakers are not exactly uncommon. ***

Overall, I like the product and would recommend it.

My second lamp on the same unit adds extra light to my 10 gal aquarium. I also wrapped this second light in blue tape to add a cool blue effect to the tank thus, easier on the eyes. The bulb does not get hot so no major chance of fire as well. Great system and much cheaper on Amazon than at pet stores. I recommend this system to anyone.

I had purchased and was using the LED light fixture for my 37 gallon aquarium. But because of the depth of the aquarium, the single tube that came with the original light fixture was not enough to display the tank and its inhabitants well. This is a bag of activated carbon. I use it to filter smoke in my tobacco water pipe to keep it much cleaner and get rid of the tar and nastiness. LOL OR MAYBE I HAVE AN AQUARIUM.

umm the filter carbon were sticks instead of gravel size which made it better for my filter it actually increased the filter flow :)
