Tetra Usa ATS29588 Whisper 30 Tube Bag for Aquarium Filter

Tetra Usa ATS29588 Whisper 30 Tube Bag for Aquarium FilterProduct fits different brand filters, so it works nicely as a replacement when you cannot get all the gunk out of your existing tubes. This product is louder than original tubes, though.

New filter tube much longer than original which was a big plus for me. Found the impeller somewhat noisy though.

Buy Tetra Usa ATS29588 Whisper 30 Tube Bag for Aquarium Filter Now

My whisper aquarium filter was less than whisper quiet it was making an annoying hum/rattle so I figured it was time to replace the impeller. I'm very glad I did! My flter is running almost silently again for less than half the cost of a new unit. The tube is only needed if yours is damaged or you want extra extensions. The impeller is all thats needed if yours is worn and humming.

Marineland PA11486 Canister Filter Bio-Balls PC 160-360, 90-BioBalls

Marineland PA11486 Canister Filter Bio-Balls PC 160-360, 90-BioBallsI bought these for a DIY airlift filter (using PVC pipe) and needed smaller sized balls. The only place that indicated the size was at a major pet store website that indicated that they are 3/4" in diameter. This is incorrect. The actual size is 21mm (0.83") in diameter so i had to use 1" PVC pipe for these to fit into.

These bio-filter balls have lots of surface area for bacteria to colonize, much much more than ceramic rings. The surfaces, both outside and inside, have a slightly rough texture which is important since the bacteria will have something to cling to. The multiple channels provide a lot of water flow that allows nutrients to reach and support the bacterial colonies.

The only complaint is that some of the balls are not fully formed. The plastic was not fully injected into the molds which reduced the amount of surface area and is not textured. They still work and won't be seen while inside a filter.

Not all bio-balls are created equal. I originally purchased some other (cheaper) bio-balls but it had a noxious smell so I immediately returned them. It used low quality plastic that leached toxic compounds into the air and water (which may be carcinogenic or mutagenic to your fish), did not have any texture, and had a design that limited water flow. These Marineland bio-filter balls, however, don't have any smell, appear to use quality plastic, are lightweight, are textured, and support large bacterial colonies.

If you are deciding between these bio-balls or other ones, I recommend choosing Marineland. You'll be getting a quality product that you'll know will be safe for your fish.

Edit: 03/13/13

These bio-balls float. Depending on your filter setup, you may need some kind of enclosure like a mesh bag to keep them in place or they will float to the surface.

This bioballs are great for cannister filters, you would thnik that 90 bioballs are to much, but they are really small in comparison to the standard size, so they are great because they give you a huge surface to the bacteria grow and doesn't ocupied a big space, in cannister filters this is quite an advantage.

Buy Marineland PA11486 Canister Filter Bio-Balls PC 160-360, 90-BioBalls Now

I love balls.

I do not trust sintered glass or ceramic biomedia claims about each piece having the surface area of Brazil. Water and oxygen won't flow through these microcrevices and nanoholes after the biofilm covers them up, so you really only have the surface of the object itself. These seem to work fine for all my tanks I have them in Fluval 305/6 filters on heavily planted and VERY overstocked tanks with 8 to 10 times the tank volume moved per hour. They don't clog, they are always covered in lovely disgusting slimy bacterial slick that never goes all death-stinky, and the water is so clear you would never know you are looking at a fish toilet.

But do please pay attention to what you are buying. They usually tell you how big they are, so read and don't be surprised.

It would be nice, though, if they would give you the VOLUME of balls, as I doubt anybody is looking for a specific number of balls, just enough to fill a filter basket that can hold [this much] balls.

Balls.

yet another helpful addition to the filtration system. mixed in with the ceramic bio tubes the two work very well together.

I had the hardest time finding the size of these bioballs because it doesn't say it anywhere, even on the Marineland website. Turns out they are the small kind, a little over 1cm in diameter and to be used for the Marineland canister filters. They are pretty decent, though I wish they could have molded in a different color plastic because with a light color plastic you can actually see the film of bacteria on them.

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic Rings

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic RingsThis does the same thing as the charcoal with a lot less mess. It is a pain to have to remove the charcoal packet every time I put in an algae treatment. I just set up a new aquarium and for some reason the algae has been very difficult control. Correction, it has been out of control but I'm winning the battle. I recommend these and believe you will like them too.

Have not used them yet but arrived as expected. Have read about ceramic rings and their usefulness for maintaining helpful bacteria in aquarium filtration. Will update after having used them.

Seio P320 Prop Pump with Magnet Mount, 320 GPH

Seio P320 Prop Pump with Magnet Mount, 320 GPHThe pump works quietly and moves a reasonable amount of water I suppose. I have it in a small 10 gallon salt tank used as a quarantine tank. It would take 2 of these pumps to support a 20 gallon properly. I doubt its 320 gph rating. It would mean its turning this little tank over 32 times per hour. I don't think so. It probably is putting out 190 to 200 gph. The water output is okay for my needs in this case though.

However the mounting system leaves something to be desired. Because the heavy power cord exits the rear of the motor housing, it cannot be mounted on the side of the tank if the powerhead is pointed so it blows lengthwise in the tank. It must be mounted on the rear wall of the tank and the powerhead has to be turned 90 deg. Even when you do that if you don't let the power cord go straight back for 6 to 8 inches before turning up and out the top of the tank, the stiffness of the cord overpowers the magnet mount and the powerhead points downward. This causes a sandstorm, and messes up your tank. I realize this is a $15 product, but their entire line of powerheads have this shortcoming. It would not be expensive to redesign the power cord so it wouldn't cause this problem.

The magnetic mount is a vast improvement over a suction cup method of retaining the pump to the wall of the tank. Hydor Korilla uses a magnetic mount that also incorporates a large suction cup. It does cost $25-$30 though. I would think Seio could incorporate a suction cup into the magnetic mount without doubling the cost of the unit.

I know it sounds like I'm knitpicking, but you only want a powerhead for one thing--move water in a controlled manner. Because of the mounting shortcomings, one is limited in the amount of control they have over the water movement direction. It does move water efficiently and quietly. And it is more controllable than most of the powerheads in this price range, but I'll spend the extra $10 to $15 next time, and buy another Hydor Korilla 425.

An excellent pump for the money, the Seio Taam p320 delivers excellent flow over a wide area to keep your fish and or corals happily blowing in the current. At 320 gph flow is non adjustable and the pump is easily diassembled for maintenance and cleaning. Perhaps one of the heaviest power cords on any pump out there, it may be a bit cumbersome and tends to redirect and move the pump until a good bend is achieved where it exits the aquarium. Magnetic mount works well on small aquariums but still seems a bit weak. Overall an excellant choice for the nano reefer wanting good flow on a small tank.

Buy Seio P320 Prop Pump with Magnet Mount, 320 GPH Now

I got this for my 14g nano cube because it appeared to be small and compact. I like having the magnet on the outside of the glass, it makes it easier to move around. The first day/night everything was cool, the flow was decent and I didnt really hear anything. Day 2 the pump sounded like something had broken, it was making a loud grinding sound and I couldnt get it to stop. Although a nice design and somewhat compact and good for small tanks, I think its made with cheap parts. If you dont mind the loud noise and want to save a few bucks buy it, but youre probably better off getting a korilia.

Mammoth Squeakies Dog Nylon Large Squeak Toy

Squeakies Dog Nylon Small Squeak Toy, 8-Inch, Assorted ColorsMy 1 year old Boston Terrier Riley loved the Squeaky Freaks Nylon Dog Toy... we called him "red dog" but unfortunately red dog didn't hold up to the heavy chewing as his nylon covering was easily shredded. We tossed the toy a couple of weeks ago and are still finding strands in the carpet. Riley wasn't happy about us tossing red dog and tried repeatedly to save the toy from the trash, but we were concerned about the stuffing and strands that were coming off of the toy. It's a shame.

I purchased this toy for my 8 month Lab hoping that the nylon material will be durable and strong. I also liked the idea of multiple squeakers, one even made a "quaking" noise. The dog really liked the squeaks too and the size was good, not too big or too small to carry around. But within 10 minutes she chewed off the tail and once the tail was gone she was able to get to the stuffing in another 10 minutes. Out came the squeakers and the stuffing and the toy was history. Although the quality seemed ok, this toy is not "Lab proof" and my money was gone in 20 minutes. Do not recommend for bigger dogs or "chewers".

Buy Mammoth Squeakies Dog Nylon Large Squeak Toy Now

I bought the small dog toy for my husky, who loves squeaky toys. She can be slightly tough on toys, so I was hoping that the nylon toy would stand up to her. However, after 10 minutes of playing, stuffing was already coming out.

I checked the toy to see if was just a bit of faulty stitching that I could fix six seams had completly opened up and the nylon fabric had frayed to the trash!

Though my dog can be slightly destructive to toys, she's not one of those "eat a Kong toy in 10 minutes" kind of dog. I anticipated that this toy would probably be destroyed, but was expecting it to last at least a few months.

Though I'm tempted to give it one star, I'll give it two stars for dog enjoyment. For the 10 minutes my dog had it, she was in doggie heaven! I wish it was more durable I was sad that I had to take it away from her.

Zilla 11733 Cricket Water Pillows, 6-Pack

Zilla 11733 Cricket Water Pillows, 6-PackI'm a cricket farmer and have been looking for something to water my 3-week old and smaller crickets, because they can drown so easily even with an over-wet sponge. Having to carefully rehydrate sponges atleast once a day or giving them expensive potato slices is both a hassle and time consuming, and so I thought I found the answer to my prayers with the "Water Pillow". "I was wrong", these things swell up so much that the edges lift high enough off the ground that pinheads all the way up to 1/4" crickets can't climb up and reach the water. The smooth platic bottom also makes it impossible for them to get any traction to climb.

I think they would work great for larger crickets but when you have thousands of crickets in each container like I do, these "Cricket Pillows" wouldn't last a day. For crickets 3 weeks old and bigger, I use reptile waterers with a sponge in the bowl that works perfectly and will last nearly a week before having to refill.

I do like the "Cricket Pillow" concept but the design is poor. If they could make them with a flat rigid bottom so all 4 edges stay on the ground, than they could be a winner.

Put the pillows water-side down and any sized cricket can climb up on them and drink. I live in a very dry part of the country, so the pillows are very helpful to keep the liquid from evaporating. I've had mine in use for almost a year, and they are just like new.

Buy Zilla 11733 Cricket Water Pillows, 6-Pack Now

I got mine earlier today from the clearance isle, they were just 40 cents so I decided to get them. When I put them in the sink with the water running so I could fill up the sink with water to soak them in I was surprised how much water the absorbed. I used three of them for my crickets, and a few of them decided to stay on top of them. (These cricket are the largest ones you can get)As I looked closely I could see their mouthparts moving so I guess they were drinking. Once these dry out I will conduct an experiment to see how much water a pillow will hold and how long it will take for them to dry out. Overall I really like these pillows. And my crickets are in my taranutla's cage so I hope the crickets will last longer so I won't have to buy crickets only for them to die after a few days. (I buy crickets every week and they go straight to my tarantulas tank.

If you've never used a water pillow for your insects, this is a great way to go. Reuseable several times. But it does get pretty gross with crickets, and they do tend to lay eggs in it as well as poop around it. But for roaches it's fantastic. They don't dirty the pillows at all.

Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons

Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallonsHaving a somewhat overstocked goldfish tank, I run two HOB filters: the Tetra Whisper 60 and the Marineland Penguin 350, but what I really needed was more biological filtration, and something I could rely on. The Penguin is not self-priming, and so in case of power failure, it often stops working. Even the Whisper filter is somewhat unreliable when the power goes out, and will not immediately resume working after. The motors in both of these filters will eventually burn out, but my Hydro Pro sponge filters with their simple and effective design will always work.

Due to the circumstances described above, I decided to install two Hydro IV sponge filters in my goldfish tank to increase biological filtration. I needed something reliable and simple that would work, no matter what. As all fish enthusiasts know, biological filtration is the most important type of filtration in any tank, and using a sponge filter is the best way to establish a good bio-filter, especially when your tank exceeds its recommended bio-load.

I run mine in the simple way, with airstones, using a Tetra 77855 air pump. I have been running these for over a month now, and my fish and I have been quite pleased with the results. The water in my tank actually seems cleaner and clearer, and there are no expensive cartridges or parts to replace. It's no wonder most pet stores don't sell these as they are so economical. As long as you rinse them once a month, you never have to replace them, and there are no complicated parts. I rinse mine in a bucket of used water from my aquarium every month, and that's all there is to it. Even though my bio-load is too high, I must say my water quality is excellent, and I have a healthy, happy tank. Even my apple snails are happier. They like to crawl on the sponge, eating any particles of algae or food that get trapped in the outside.

One more benefit of having this type of filter is that it can help quickly cycle a new tank. I have a 40-long tank that formerly housed some mollies. I did a complete water change to prepare the tank to house two black moors, and I needed to cycle it. I squeezed water from my sponges as a source of bacteria, and I put this in my new tank, eventually trading one of my 'dirty' sponges with a new one to more quickly establish the new tank. After trading filter cartridges and bio-wheels in my Penguins and waiting a week, I found no ammonia or nitrites in my tank, and it was ready for the moors. I could have never done this without the quality bio-filtration that these filters provide. I now plan to install Hydro Pro sponge filters in every tank.

I've used sponge filters in the past to polish aquarium water and keep baby fry from being gobbled up by the normal filtration. This Hydro IV works great and the design makes it easy to clean.

Buy Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons Now

Most aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge IV is intended for tanks up to 80 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I use these in all my fish tanks. Very affordable, excellent filtration. The "Pro" series lasts alot longer and filters better.

Want Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons Discount?

I ordered this sponge filter for additional biological filtration in my fancy goldfish tank of 29 gallons. Goldfish are very messy, so I wanted as much efficient filtration as possible. When one of my fish was sick and I was forced to take my carbon filters out of my Penguin Pro 200 filter to administer medication, this sponge filter kept my water parameters in check. (I have mine powered by a Whisper air pump.)

Pros: Cheap, great for quarantine and fry tanks where you don't want a lot of suction or too much aeration, easily run by an air pump, no carbon cartridges to replace (which will save you a great deal of money), can be cleaned easily once a month in old tank water.

Cons: Very large, can be seen as ugly in a well-decorated tank.

I highly recommend these, especially for anyone with an overstocked goldfish tank!

Eshopps PSK-100H Hang-On Protein Skimmer - up to 100 gal

Eshopps PSK-100H Hang-On Protein Skimmer - up to 100 galLeaked immediately upon assembly around the shroud of the pump's impeller. Took apart multiple times to fix the problem. O-ring was seated correctly every time, just wasn't getting a good enough seal. Used silicone lubricant on the o-ring and so far it's fixed the leak. I'm confident I won't have any more trouble, but was pretty frustrating. If you purchase this product, I'd suggest lubricating all the o-rings and thoroughly checking for leaks.

I received this 2 days ago. Simple to set up and get going. As with all skimmers minor tweaking needed. I had light colored skim in 12 hours. I put this on my seahorse tank. absolutely NO micro bubbles entering the tank. Which is great. My previous skimmer blew micro bubbles all over the place and took 2 weeks to break in.

This skimmer is super quiet and made of durable thick acrylic. The pump is super quiet also. Simple uncomplicated design. Hangs on back of my 20 gallon tank and fits perfectly. I just love it so far and my little ponies love it too. I highly recommend this skimmer.

running 2 days I will update if I have to. So far very pleased.

Leaked 1st day! That was the first problem.

I have a 30 gallon sump(refugium) it does not fit on that, I had to use Velcro to keep it in place.

The output line for the waste is horribly placed. If Eshopps whants to learn something look at the Super Skimmer from Coral Life. Put the output line at the bottom so sediments dont just sit in there. If you want to put this in your sump dont buy it. If you want it to hang from your aquarium maybe its worth it.

Mardel 5-in-1 Test Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater)

Mardel 5-in-1 Test Strips, 25-CountI love keeping fish but I am lazy. The constant test tube tests drive me crazy and my local fish stores say that it is the only way to go. Going against their advice, I've been using these strips exlusively for more than a year and they have been fast, easy and seemingly accurate, since my aquarium has been extremely stable. Initially, I would compare the PH readings with the test tube, and these strips readings were consistent.

I recommend these!

These strips are easy to use, except for the pH test. There isn't much difference between the oranges on the comparison chart for the pH and the pH strip color doesn't match anything on the bottle. I've been using a liquid pH test that seems to be more accurate (or at least easier to read).

Make sure to wait the full minute for the Nitrate test becuase the color takes a while to develop.

Buy Mardel 5-in-1 Test Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater) Now

These strips are easy to use, but I didn't notice that they only have a limited shelf life and the following season they were inaccurate. I checked and they'd expired. The 100 count is probably more than you'll use in one year. But it you're aware of this they do save a lot of time. But the price is high for one season of testing.

Read Best Reviews of Mardel 5-in-1 Test Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater) Here

The strips were a terrible buy. I thought they were working in the beginning, but every time I used a strip it never changed. The alkalinity portion of the strip would change to a color that wasn't listed on the bottle.

These strips scream efficiency, but I would suggest just getting the tube tests.

Want Mardel 5-in-1 Test Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater) Discount?

I have four established fish tanks. I use these strips weekly to make sure my tanks are not having any issues. I've been using these strips for 5 years and work well. Note that they have limited shelf life of about a year. Check the bottom of the container for expiration date. You can tell when they age because the pink test colors are faded. I was surprised to see other reviewers complain that these strips failed to change color. You can test these strips with household products. I also have test tube based kits but these strips have always agreed with the results. I have freshwater tropical fish of the more common variety and they aren't extremely fussy about the pH range or water hardness: cory cats, tetras, loaches, green spotted puffers, guppies, barbs, chocolate gouramis. If you have fish that require very exact water conditions, perhaps strips may not be for you. I find them to be an excellent product and because it's so quick and easy, I actually do test my water weekly.

Lee's Pet Products ALE14103 Airline Control Kit for Aquarium Pumps

Lee's Pet Products ALE14103 Airline Control Kit for Aquarium Pumps
  • Lees airline control kit cd
  • Made of high-quality, non-corrosive material plastic
  • Use to divide and control air flow from your air pump

I used parts from this kit to allow fine-tuning of the separate filters on my heavily planted 75 gallon community tank. My air pump has two outlets, and I used 2 of the "T" fittings to make a "equalizing bridge" between the two outlets. I then used 2 of the control valves to allow individual control of each of the filters. Completely closing either valve diverts air through the equalizing bridge to the other filter, preventing the pump from laboring.

I found no problem with quality of workmanship or materials used. The plastic chosen seems to be a non-brittle, slightly flexible type, similar to that used in Tupperware.

I wasn't expecting much out of this. They are cheap and divert the air to where I need it. The valves don't work real well, they seem to bo open or closed, no graduation. There are a lot of pieces and I will never need new 'T's or valves unless I need a really good valve later.

Want Lee's Pet Products ALE14103 Airline Control Kit for Aquarium Pumps Discount?

I haven't had any problems with these. I don't expect that I will. They do what I need them to do.

I bought this kit for the valves. I needed some valves to regulate pressure from a DIY CO2 reactor for a planted freshwater tank. I had a similar plastic air valve that worked in this application just fine. However, the valves in this kit are not the same quality. They cannot hold any amount of air pressure without leaking. Keep in mind that DIY CO2 reactors don't create a lot of pressure. Yet these valves could not handle it. As soon as I connected one, CO2 and water immediately sprayed out from the valve knob.

If you just want to control the amount of bubbles created from an air pump, they should work okay.

TOM Stellar Air Pump W-40 - 40gal to 55gal tank

TOM Stellar Air Pump W-40 - 40gal to 55gal tankI have this pump on my 20 gallon long aquarium for the 2 under gravel filters. It absolutely pumps the air with no problem whatsoever. Very strong. It is noisy though. It does seem more like white noise but if you are looking for a whisper quiet pump then this wouldn't be the one.

The cord is long and it was a piece of cake to set up. The one I received is all black. It is not like the picture so if you're expecting what's in the picture, I have to assume you will also get a black one. (I prefer black so I was fine with it)

I recommend this pump for strength.

This is hands-down one of my favorite air pumps. I use it to operate the box filters for two 29-gallon fish tanks in my basement fishroom. The pump is fairly quiet, very powerful, and very sleek in its design (mine is black, not white like the picture). It's also a wonderful option for supplying air to multiple tanks, as its air output is strong enough to split with a gang valve.

This is a decent pump for the money. The dual air outlets come in handy. I would reccomend it !

Magic Globe Aquarium, 5-Gallon

Magic Globe Fountain Well Aquarium, 5-GallonI have never had an aquarium before and have no experience with fish (other than eating;). My wife and I thought we would try an aquarium because our 2 year old is always fascinated with the fish in aquariums. So this review is being written after 2 days of use, and I will update further with more detail. I am assuming that most people buying this tank are probably new to aquariums as I am.

If you just want to see my overall impression, skip to the last paragraph.

First, in an of itself it is a nice simple, non messy water feature for the house. Setup is pretty simple and easy, and it does look really nice with the water completely filling the globe. The running water is soundless, and the pump is very quiet, only slightly noticeable when the house is silent, so bedroom use is fine in that regard.

Second, Fish. According to the guy at petco, because the aquarium doesn't have a heater, he suggested only three varieties of fish. Unfortunately not are that colorful, but are nice enough I guess, we went with smaller fish so we could get more in the 5 Gallon capacity tank. So we now have four fish and a new plastic plant, as I wasn't to thrilled with the big pink flower that was included in the tank. I don't know if fish are frightened when moving into a new environment, but so far they have been hanging out at the bottom of the tank, hard to see. Magnification of the globe that is amazing and when they do swim up it is easy to see them from across the room.

Last, Concerns: May be groundless, but I will update as I go through discovery.

Feeding: Instructions say to feed only what they can eat in five minutes. how much is that? If finished before 5 minutes, does that mean I didn't feed them enough?

When one of the fish (knock on wood hasn't happened yet) dies, if not near the opening how hard will it be to get out?

Cleaning seems pretty straight forward but I haven't had to do it yet, so I don't know how good or bad that process will be.

Overall: I gave it 5 stars. As of right now (day 2) I love it (if that changes I will update). It was very easy to set up, It is a really nice water feature for inside the house. Fun aquarium.

Update: I am now two weeks in. So far so good, still enjoying it, I moved the plastic plant to center in middle of water return, and it changed the current in the tank, the fish are now swimming more often in center and top of tank, more visibly. Cleaning has been pretty easy using the included tools so far. Again everything is still new so I will update as more serious service is due (filter changes, etc).

I got this for my office for some goldfish we had. The first one came and we set it up no problem and it kept leaking and leaking. We thought we had done something wrong in the setup but we finally realized that it had a hairline crack in the base that was leaking. We sent it back and got the new one in less than 12 hours! Amazon is so fast! The second one is flawless and we love to look at it it is silent you cant hear a pump or a motor or the water, so it is nice for the office. The only reason we give it four stars is because how do you feed the fish? Getting the food in there is nearly impossible.

Read a lot about this aquarium and finally got one for my son Kevin (5 years old). It came with an instructional DVD in English/Spanish so had no problem setting it up in about 45 minutes.

When Kevin saw his new tank he was so drilled he had all his cousins and friends to come over and shared the joy together. I have put the little rainbow toys instead of real fish into the tank and they look really nice in the dark with colorful LED lights.

I would say it is a beginner fish tank and not for serious fish hobbyist but its a fun item and is definitely will be on the top of my Christmas give away gift list this year.

We have one set up for couple of months now and man let me tell you it really entertained everyone in our family watching the colorful LED light and little toy balls floating up and down and kids and friends really love it. When I say everyone that includes my cat Spotty! She would always sit curiously next to the fountain and watch it for hours and drinks water from it. Everyone in the family love it and I strongly recommend this very innovative and fun product.

We were excited to set this tank up and and marvel at it's design. However, within a month of owning it the real problems started to emerge.

1. The filter provided by the company is TERRIBLE. Your water will be dirty within days. We had to go to a pet supply store and buy 'activated charcoal' to put inside the filter bag. Much better results, water is crystal clear.

2. As crazy as it seems, we had two Glofish tetras JUMP out of the strainer and dye on our carpet. When I contacted Aquatica customer service asking for a cap to place on the strainer, they rudely advised me that fish jumping out was highly unlikely and we should just place a 'cup coaster' over the opening.

Well, I'm out $12 for fish and now I have to jimmy-rig their product? Thanks a lot, customer service!

I would advise anyone seeking a small tank to stick with products that are tried and true. This one seems interesting but it's more trouble than it's worth.

Did I mention their customer service is terrible?

UPDATE** Another Glofish jumped out of the tank strainer! Make sure whatever you use to block the exit is heavy enough that a fish can't get through!

Now I am out almost $20 for dead fish :(

2nd UPDATE** ANOTHER Glofish jumped out today and died. I really hate this Magic Globe. I have lost 4 fish now!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you want your fish to stay inside the tank.

Fluval External Filter

Fluval 406 External FilterI have been an Eheim fanboy for quiet some time. Lately though, I am seeing that other manufacturers have upped their game. I have a Pennplax Cascade 1200 which is well made and has great flow. This Fluval 306 is Fluval's current 300-series canister. I haven't owned a Fluval canister filter for the last 15 years. The quality of materials of this 306 is immediately noticeable--it is solid and well built. I have a Rena Filstar XP3 filter and the plastics for some parts are not rigid enough (especially quick-disconnect unit--had a leak issue)--not so with this canister. The flow in this filter is such that water enters the inlet, is met by coarse foam spanning the height of the canister chamber. Water then moves through 3 media baskets that you can put whatever you like in. This canister does come with fine foam, ceramic biomedia, carbon pouches--everything you need to get started. The 306 is a well-designed filter system in my book.

The canister filter works great and has great flow. It is listed as being for up to 70gal, and I am using it at full output in a 58gal. Perfect flow. You can adjust the output down if you like by using the flow control lever on the Aquastop valve. This is the same valve that allows you to shut the water to the hoses off completely when disconnecting and servicing the unit. The canister is very quiet. The output nozzle is rather simple and can only be turned in the direction you want it to be aimed. It does not have a spray bar, nor does it have a deflector to adjust vertical spread. I have to say that the hose guides that steer the hose into the tank where you connect it to the input/output hardware is very unique. I like it better than the plastic hardware that every other canister filter uses. It has suction cups inside and outside the tank making it very stable. There is also a unique priming lever that you can use to purge the canister of air when connecting it for the first time--it took quite a few pumps but it works as advertised.

PROS:

+quality materials used and built solid

+quiet operation. Have no complaints at all about operating noise.

+Aquastop disconnect works great for reducing flow or shutting off completely to service canister

+excellent filtration: 1 coarse sponge + 3 media baskets (in succession)

+Hose guide brackets work really well, very stable

+media included

+easy and effective priming mechanism

+powerful flow! Flow is equal to filters rated for larger tanks--I'm guessing tank size rating due to relatively small size of the unit (ie. filtering media). I for one love that it has more flow. Many I know have two canister filters per tank for water movement.

+ribbed plastic hose is very flexible and stays kink-free. In theory it may not be optimal for flow and over time may collect more sediment more than smooth-walled tubing.

CONS:

-very basic output nozzle--can be turned but has no height deflector. No spraybar also if that is your thing. The output nozzle also shakes from all the flow. I bought a suction cup holder (like the included one for the intake stem) to steady it--works great!

All-in-all, a great canister filter!!! Definitely superior to my Eheim classic 2217 and cheaper too! I would also choose this over the Rena XP2/3. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this canister to anyone. If any long-term issues arise, I will update this review. I am now definitely a Fluval fanboy!!!

I uploaded a short video.

I have 2 aquatic turtles. No filters worked even relatively decent until I got this Fluval filter. I was doing complete water changes in my 75 gallon tank every week. This filter changed all of that. It keeps the tank super crystal clear! It's totally and completely silent, which is the best part. It aerates the water. I cannot say enough about how great this filter is! If you have fish, you'll love it. If you have turtles, don't waste money on any other filter, this one works best. I've tried them all!

I have a 55 gallon aquarium with several very large cichlids in it. Cichlids are fish notorious for filthying up a tank and mine are no different. Before this filter arrived, I was keeping the tank clean with two hang on the back type AquaClear filters (which if you must have a hang on the bank type of filter I do recommend that brand above all others). Each of the AquaClear filters was rated for a tank larger than the one I have. Still, the water never seemed quite clear, despite monthly filter maintenance and weekly 50% water changes.

Since installing this Fluval my tank water is so clear it looks as if the fish are floating in air. My fish are even more vibrantly colored, indicating to me the water quality has improved. It comes completely loaded with media which you will need to rinse before using.

My favorite part about this filter is how amazingly quiet it is. My aquarium is located in my bedroom and we are used to the constant waterfalls and impeller noises from the two hang on the back filters we were running, which were the quietest we had owned. The first night we ran this filter the silence actually kept us awake! We still have to walk up to glance into the tank periodically so that we can tell it is even running because it is so quiet.

It is also super easy to maintain. There is a lever on the top which stops water from leaving the lid like a switch. You then simply remove the lid and do what you need to do. Even starting an empty filter is a breeze as it self primes and the self priming actually WORKS!!!

If you are used to hang on the back filters, expect this filter to take more time to install. It took me about an hour as I have never installed this type of filter before and I misunderstood where the gasket was to be seated. Yes, it was a very wet mistake. :-)

The instructions could be better. The device is actually simple to install but the instructions make it seem more complicated than it is.

We have only ran this for about a month but I can tell this is one of those rare products that is so well made it will be passed on to my children. I cannot give it high enough praise.

I purchased 2 Fluval 406 for a new 100 Gal Freshwater tank. The major difference from the 405 filter is the priming mech which on the 406 is easier to get started and was completely redesigned very nice! Also the motor clamps are stronger and easier to open when cleaning is required. The impeller cover on the 406 is very strong and looks like it will never need to be replaced like on the 405 which can break when cleaning. The only drawback is that parts for the 06 series are not readily available yet. I have had this filter for about 15 months and I am still very pleased with my water quality. I also purchased a Eheim 2076 Pro 3E for my 40 Gal breeder and I am regretting it already the water is cloudy and I believe that it is due to bypass issues. I replaced it with one of my fluval 406 cannisters from my 100 Gal to verify that it is an issue with the Pro 3E and it only took about 12 hours to completly clear my cloudy 40Gal tank. If anyone has a comment or suggestion on how to fix this issue with my Eheim please post a comment I would very much appreciate any suggestions to resolve this issue.

Overall I love this filter. The majority of the parts are made of high quality plastic (with the exception of the ribbed tubing...17mm ID and 21.8mm OD as measured with a caliper is nearly impossible to replace with anything else that is readily available). The clips for hanging the intake and outlet hoses on the side of the aquarium however provide a robust mounting mechanism and they look cool as well, like they were designed by Dino de Laurentiis for the set of Dune or something. The pump motor is quite powerful. It does hum and vibrate somewhat with a small amount of impeller rattle that becomes evident when listening closely to the unit. I would compare it to the noise generated by a small air pump.

The variable flow control provided by this filter is very useful for stirring up crud from the bottom of the tank. I run the filter continuously at ~50-60% power and once a day I will crank it up to full power for a few minutes which helps to keep the surface of the substrate clean and reduce the frequency of full-on gravel vacs. My fish absolutely love to play in the jet of water created by the directional outlet and yet I can keep the flow rate below what would bother my shrimp (unless they happen to swim directly into the path of the return jet and get an express trip across the aquarium which they occasionally do). The intake tube will need to be covered with a piece of mesh or a nylon filter media bag if you intend to have fish fry or shrimplets swimming around because they will be easily sucked into it and get fluvalised. I recently discovered this the hard was as while cleaning the filter I found two shrimp that had probably been feeding near the intake and gotten filtered. Amazingly they were both still alive and seemed none the worse for wear.

After reading about seal leak horror stories from other users of various brands of canister filters, I would advise investing in some high quality silicone grease to lubricate all readily accessible o-rings and seals. I use Dow Corning high vacuum grease. It's pricey but a tube will last you a lifetime or three. It doesn't take much, just a THIN FILM applied with a toothpick each time you service your filter will keep your seals from drying out and add years of life to them.

800 GPH Powerhead Aquarium Pump Wave Maker

800 GPH Powerhead Aquarium Pump Wave MakerLove it keep my 135G water moving like an ocean, can't beat that for the price, there's others with the same rating but if you on a budget then get this one.

I love these things! I purchased (2) for my 75 gallon reef tank and will be buying (2) more. The flow is excellent, they work great and havent had an issue yet! CHEAP TOO!

I got this pump because I have a 39 gallon reef tank and it just didn't have enough flow, I already had a 950gph and on the other side a 750gph, both were from petco and I cant remember the names, anyhow the 750 was just not strong enough to reach the other end of my tank and I was getting foam build up on one side of the tank due to the still water on that side, and the 950 was doing just fine. So i got this because it was cheap and I thought Id give it a try and it was awesome. Stuck in the tank, plugged it in and it was easily reaching the other end, very happy with the product and the suction cups stick very well, I highly recommend this power head for 40 to 65 gallon tanks.

Ya, it's too much for a 29 gallon. My fish look like they're at an amusement park on a water ride. It was the same price for this one as it was for the one with half the gph, so silly frugal me, I bought this one thinking my tank could handle it. My fish can only swim on one side of the tank now hahahaha. I think what I'm going to do is put this one in my sump and get a smaller one for up top. Whoever said this is good for 50-90 gallon is probably right. I'm like Captain James T Kirk & Mr. Scott on Star Trek, MORE POWER!!! lol This will blow your anemones and corals right off the rock if you're not careful & one is probably enough I think.

-------------

Edit: I don't like complaining, but I took away 1 star. The only reason I did this is because the cord is the shortest cord of all my devices. It's really short. It's so short, I have to buy an extension cable exclusively for this item. They could have added a few more feet and it would have been "acceptable".

it is a low cost powerhead that met all my needs. I have it in a 20l and thot it might be too much, after moving my mushrooms around to where they are happy all is good. Does a great job of keeping waste out from behind my rocks and havent had a problem at all.
