API Aquarium Salt

API Aquarium Salt, 65-OunceHi, this salt is very useful for good gill function and helps enhance treatments when using medications to battle parasites and diseases in your aquarium. It helps your fish relax and breath normally when dosing your tank with strong medicines that could cause stress. Should only be used when needed, but a bit of salt after your waterchanges wouldn't hurt at all. Make sure to dissolve in hot water before adding to aquarium.

This salt is actually about the same if not, cheaper than most kitchen sea salt, rock salt etc. Also, some [Non-Iodized] Kitchen salts contain different caking agents other than iodine to prevent salt from clumping up. This aquarium salt is PURE sea salt with no additives so this is your safest route.

Salt is the safest natural way to treat first signs of white spot disease also known as ich. In other words this will only be effective in the early stages and minor infections, if your fish is covered in ich then I suggest using medications with the combination of salt for maximum effectiveness.

Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons, if your fish show no signs of stress feel free to add another 1 Tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons. Then you want to get the heat up to about 85-88 degrees. In order to do this, you have to raise the temperature slowly about 1-2 degrees every hour. Monitor your fish, if they are breathing rapidly the temperature is too high. When you notice some spots disappearing it is important to do atleast a 25% water change to get rid of the parasites in its free swimming stage. Continue treating for another week AFTER you see no spots to ensure you get rid of all the ich.

Warning: Please do research on your fish before using salt. Generally salt is not harmful but if your fish are scaleless or sensitive to salt it can cause death from shock if introduced to your aquarium in large amounts at once.

Here's my super long review on aquarium salt to those who read it, Please let me know if it was helpful. Thanks!

Adding this product to your aquarium helps to keep your fish healthy and even lowers stress levels. Many freshwater tropical fish still like a slight saltiness to the water. As long as you follow the dosing direction on the box, you should have absolutely no problem with this product.

Things to Remember...

Only add additional salt after you have completed a water change and only add enough salt to dose the amount of water you replaced. Also, do not just top the water level off in your tank if water evaporates. This will just make the salt concentration higher.

Overall, I highly recommend this.

My neighborhood store ran out of aquarium salt and I was too frustrated to look for it at another store. So, I tried Amazon.com and sure enough I found my brand of salt online. As any Goldfish lover can tell you, aquarium salt is an essential additive for the electrolyte balance of aquarium goldfish. Not only does aquarium salt reduce the amount of ammonia in the fish tank, its helps to reduce stress on the fish after a water change, and it helps them to heal and to fight diseases. I recommend Mars Fishcare Aquarium Salt to every fish lover who have fish that need a bit of aquarium salt routinely for the health of their fish.

Aquarium Salt, 65 oz

In addition, Mars Fishcare Aquarium Salt, 65 oz sells for a reasonable price.

I followed the dosing instructions on the label exactly, and a week or so after starting to use it, one of my betta got sick and died. I managed to save my second betta by removing him from the salt water.

I added the required dose for freshwater fish to 2 gallons of water, then added the required water conditioner, and used that water for my water changes. I never put the salt directly into the aquarium, so I always knew it was the right concentration. I made sure the salt was fully dissolved (the chunks are very big).

I don't know what I did wrong, but fortunately I was able to save my second betta after I stopped using this product. I now use the product as a foot soak, so it's not totally wasted. :)

I'll start with a small anecdote. A couple of months ago, my wife decided to lend me a hand a do a water change (bless her heart), but unfortunately, she's not very experienced. I lost 7 fish in the incident and my Colombian Silver Tip developed cloudy eye.

Water parameters were intact, but the fish suffered a great deal of stress, the water was too cold. Anyway, instead of buying and/or applying medicine, I went ahead and added a few spoons of this salt; within 24 hrs, the cloudy eye was gone and the remaining fish started to breathe at a normal pace.

This salt is not only for brackish water, but also for fresh water (but in small amounts). For brackish, as the name implies, it is a must. The salt will encourage a healthy inmune system and will keep the fish happy. It is a perfect additive to prevent and as I said above, cure some illnesses.

I suggest you add this product every time you do a water change or when you add new fish to your aquarium, in small amounts for the latter.

In my 13 years of keeping aquariums, I've always had this product handy. Good luck.

Aquatic Gardens Aquarium Hydrometer with Thermometer

Aquatic Gardens Aquarium Hydrometer with ThermometerThis is a really great product. I bought a Red Sea Hydrometer/Thermometer before this one and it was absolutely terrible. The design of this hydrometer is very neatit actually floats upright in your aquarium, and gives a very accurate temperature and salinity reading. Highly recommended!

I've been in the reef aquarium hobby for around 6 years now. I purchased 3 of these in case I ended up breaking one. Not as fragile as some have suggested but it's glass so be careful. Works just fine...just be sure to calibrate it with a something of a known specific gravity to ensure you are measuring apples to apples. I'd buy again for the price.

The hydrometer arrived in a timely fashion. It did not have any directions. It seems simple and easy to use.

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Tetra 10Gal Inc Economy Starter Kit

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Tetra 10Gal Inc Economy Starter KitI love this aquarium! I've had it for 6 months now and it does everything that it was made to do. After cycling, the filter keeps the tank very clean. I have my male betta and 5 pygmy corydoras in this and they love it. I needed to add a heater since they are tropical fish. I wish that the kit also came with a net and a thermometer so that would be 2 less things that you would have to buy separate, but it's ok.

I purchased this aquarium about 3 weeks ago and it's great. We have 6 goldfish in it and it truly is a great display. It's easy to set up and maintenance is not hard. I would recommend this aqaurium to anyone who desires to have pet fish. It's a great aquarium to start off with.

I have owned 2 of these aquarium kits, and they have both started to leak inexplicably after about 3 years of use. The tanks were inexpensive and served their purpose for a bit of time, but do not hold up as well as Marineland tanks. You get what you pay for, and I regret not spending the extra few dollars in the beginning for a better fish tank. Trying to find emergency homes for fish in the middle of the night is no fun at all.

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 12-Inch

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 12-InchFits perfectly on my 12" Marineland 2.5 gal. Very light-weight but a sturdy feel to it. Attaching the two legs was easy. You can slide them in or outwards to accommodate the tank rims.

There's a separate switch for the LED and moonlight on the sides. I wasn't interested in the moon lights but it looks very nice. LEDs are super bright, plants are growing like crazy!

I bought two of these to replace my old florescent bulb on my 29 gallon tank. They work well, light it more than adequately and the couple live plants I have seem to be flourishing. I bought them specifically to do more live planting, and hopefully they will do the job.

I purchased 3 of these for my aquacubes (Fresh water plants). They work well, I even grew Dwarf Baby Tears and Dwarf Hairgrass. Just be aware that these are NOT High intensity light, so it is not ideal for non-greens (Ludwigias and Rotalas will be green, not pink, not red)

Had this light for a few months and it's doing a great job over the refugium section of my sump.

I have it running opposite of the top lights to balance out the daily pH swing.

Coraline is growing great and the price was right.

I really like these lights. They are very bright and the blue lights are great as well. The switches are easy to press, one side has the blue lights and the other has the clear lights. Easy enough to switch for my six year old and he enjoys turning them off for the night. Recommended.

Fluval Ceramic 88g-CO2 Diffuser - 3.1 Ounces

Fluval Ceramic 88g-CO2 Diffuser - 3.1 OuncesI have been keeping planted tanks for a long time. I recently set up a DIY CO2 generator for my tank and had used this diffuser in the past in a similar setup. I ordered another for my latest planted tank.

You do not need to have commercial tanks of CO2, a fancy regulator, or an expensive setup in order to have lush CO2-assisted growth. I use an old Gatorade bottle, some black airline tubing, and this diffuser. I wasn't going to get a bulbble counter but it was so cheap on Amazon that I went ahead and ordered Fluva's bubble counter as well. It provides another piece of equipment that prevents the tank from leaking back out the tubing onto the floor and allows you to see if your generator is still producing gas.

For a DIY CO2 generator:

1. Gatorade or other thick plastic bottle. Many people recommend 2-Liters. I think these are too big.

2. Fleischmann's Active Yeast, or some other baker's yeast. Not the Fast Rise kind

3. Airline tubing. CO2 tubing is really expensive and since you are generating your own CO2 for pennies, don't worry too much about gas escaping.

4. Check valve. Very important.

5. Plastic inline connectors for tubing

6. Bubble Counter (or not)

7. Diffuser

8. Silicone (if needed)

Drill hole in lid of platic bottle. Affix plastic inline connector INSIDE the bottle with one side pointing down into the bottle and the other pointing up out of the lid. (if necessary, you can use silicone to get an airtight seal) Attach a small length of airline tubing inside the bottle. This length should be short enough that it will not dip into the Yeast and sugar mixture in the bottle. Affix another piece of airline tubing to the connector poking out of the lid. Attach other end to the bubble counter. If you are not using a bubble counter, attach the other end to the check valve, then another piece from the check valve to the diffuser. If you ARE using a bubble counter, place the check valve between the diffuser and the counter.

The diffuser should go in the tank in a location that will provide for the maximum transfer of CO2 gas with the water. In my tank, I have attached it directly underneath the intake for my Fluval 305 filter. The CO2 goes into the filter, slowing through the media for a longer time of gas exchange, then hits the impeller as it is pushed back into the tank. You do not want to put the diffuser near the surface or around an airstone. In fact, you don't want to use an airstone for oxygen in the tank during your photoperiod. Oxygen bubblers cause CO2 to not be in the tank long enough to have a good gas exchange. (I use an air pump at night to make sure that oxygen levels to not drop dangerously while the lights are off and photosynthesis has stopped for the day. I turn off the pump about an hour before the lights to come on to allow CO2 to build back up in the tank and be readily available to the plants when the lights come back on) If you do not wish to have your CO2 go through your filter, put it in an area as close to the bottom of the tank as possible, with as little water movement as possible. If you are not using a bubble counter, make sure you can easily see the diffuser to tell if CO2 is still coming out.

In the bottle, mix warm water with sugar, swirl it around until the sugar dissolves, then add the baker's yeast. The amount of sugar and yeast that you use will determine how long the generator stays charged. I have had bottles last two weeks, and I have had bottles last two days. Basically, you want there to be enough sugar to feed the yeast as it reproduces. More sugar means longer CO2 production. Keep in mind that a whole packet of yeast will be waaaaaaaaaaaay too much and may cause your bottle to burst.

After putting the lid with its attached line back on the bottle, walk away. It takes time for the yeast to produce enough gas to provide sufficient pressure. You will be tempted to open it. Don't. If after three hours there are still no bubbles coming through the diffuser, one of four things has happened:

1. You have a leak in your system (fruit flies and/or the smell of rising bread will tell you this)

2. You did not use enough yeast, your yeast was not active, or your water was too cold

3. You are impatient and still need to wait

4. You have water in your system and you will have to wait for internal pressure inside your bottle to overcome the water pressure from your tank (this is why I recommend the check valve)

The diffuser really is the key to all of this. What it does is use pressure to force CO2 gas through a microporous stone disc into very small bubbles. The smaller the bubbles are, the longer it takes for them to reach the surface, and the more gas exchange can occur. A regular airstone really won't cut it.

I have owned 2 of these over the last year. I have a pressurized CO2 system in a high light planted tank with Fluval Stratum my plants grow like crazy. Been using these for about a year probably lasts about 4-6 months before it gets green with algae. I love these things. It puts out a fine mist of bubbles where in a tall tank you could get almost total diffusion of CO2 before the bubbles hit the water surface at the top of the tank. I also run a power head that happens to make the bubbles swirl across the tank which also aids diffusion. I can't imagine why anyone else would use glass ladders or any other high maintenance method of CO2 diffusion when these are small, cheap, work very well, and if they get clogged you can just throw them away and get a replacement on Amazon with free shipping. I did bleach one of these filters and got the algae cleaned off, but when I used it again, large bubbles came out of the plastic seam so I ended up throwing it away. Not worth trying to clean just replace it. I used one of those wood block airstones for a while that did not work well at all for C02 (could not get consistent, fine bubbles) plus it was large and bulky. Throwing another one of these in my Amazon order today as a back-up.

Buy Fluval Ceramic 88g-CO2 Diffuser - 3.1 Ounces Now

These things are small, maybe the size of a dollar coin.

Using the Hagen system instead of the dirty ladder, this diffuser makes 5 or 6 streams! When I used an expensive glass diffuser, the DIY CO2 canister would only spit out 2 streams of larger bubbles.

No venturi pumps with cords. No giant bubble collecting cups. No ladders than accumulate mulm.

Nice!

I tried 2 of these with a 2 Liter DIY setup and could not get enough pressure to flow bubbles. Disappointing.

Want Fluval Ceramic 88g-CO2 Diffuser - 3.1 Ounces Discount?

I bought this diffuser for a planted tank that I have had setup for almost a year now. The tank was being supplied CO2 through the terms of Seachem Excel, which is a good product, but isn't as effective as CO2, so it was time for an upgrade.

This diffuser is very small, so it is easy to hide in the back where my Ehiem outflow will then blow it more and diffuse more CO2. Also note that this diffuser requires a lot of pressure to operate, I had drilled holes in my containers that were a tad too big and I tried to silicone it. Well it didn't work, because gas is going to try to go the path of least resistance. So after a bit I drilled smaller holes and had to force the tubing in. It took quiet some time to get the tubes in, but it created a seal that required no silicone. Now the diffuser is working great! Best part is it was only around $6.65, making it highly affordable.

API Melafix Extra Strength Cichlid, 8-Ounce

API Melafix Extra Strength Cichlid, 8-OunceI hate medicating a Fish tank but sometimes you have to. I had a Flower Horn Cichlid develop an eye infection that turned into Pop eye. This helped get him better and today he is fine. I also have more left over for another time. For eye problems..I say try this first, It helped my fish. No medications are miraculous but I did like this. It has a strong medicine odor but it helped the fish and that's what mattered. You DO have to remove the carbon. Remember, carbon acts like a sponge and would just absorb all the meds if you didn't remove it. Hope I was able to save a fish! Good luck.

Tetra Whisper Power Filter 40, 40-Gallon

Tetra Whisper Power Filter 40, 40-GallonI have used the Tetra Whisper filters on many different tanks for many years. I was quite sad to see them

apparently go away for a while. Seeing the filters available once again and I immediately bought a couple,

actually three now. Two have been returned and I am using the current one till I find a replacement.

The Whisper filters of old I thought were quite aptly named since were it not being able to see the water movement

across the surface of the tank you would never even know they were running.

NOT the case now... the first one was so noisy I thought for sure there has to be some kind of defect. Returning

it and buyihng another. Well.. once again, incredibly noisy. Thinking third time was a charm I decided to try

one more. I don't know what Tetra has done to these filters but whatever it was, please UNDO it. Unless you meant

Whisper to be completely sarcastic.

I had a good experience with the whisper 60 and the whispser 20. but for some reason the whisper 40 is so loud.... it started off quiet for about a month and i was happy(not to mention i could save some money) . but as soon as i took it out to clean the tubes and impeller. booom louder and louder it got(i went thru 3 of these) . i cleaned them up and returned them all. DO NOT BUY THE 40 FOR SOME REASON THEY CANT GET IT RIGHT... I purchased the marineland emperor 280 power filter(it was 15 dollars more)but well spent and well made. its so quiet i only hear my air pump. sorry whisper. but u should revamp the 40 gallon powerfilter. its junk...

This is by far the noisiest filter I have ever heard. Gave it one star because I had to give it something. Have no idea how it filters because I couldn't stand the droning noise for more than half an hour. My fish tank is in a semi-enclosed area where the noise echoes out into the room. My job requires me to transcribe work using ear phones. Could not hear with this going. Hopefully I can get my money back. Bought it replace a Top Fin because I couldn't find a replacement for the strainer end. The much quieter Top Fin is back in place with a temporary strainer.

Vibran-Sea Flowering Willow Leaf Silk-Style Aquarium Plant, Large 13-14 tall, Yellow

Vibran-Sea Flowering Willow Leaf Silk-Style Aquarium Plant, Large 13-14 tall, YellowGreat plant with great color. My fish like to swim amongst the soft leaves and pick for food or play around. Looks great under the florescent light. I have a 20 Gallon long tank and since the plant is large the top leaves float on the surface which makes it look like a more natural environment which I noticed has had a good effect on my fish. I also like how the leaves don't begin until an inch or two above the base and allows the fish to float there and have a nice shaded space. Great product which would be way more money at a retail pet shop.

This is one of my favorites silk plants. It is a large size and ok for my 25 gal tank, but it takes a lot of space with its broad leaves, so keep that in mind if you have a smaller tank.. The colors are really prettywarm yellows and auburns which look great with a blue or black background. I like the shapes of the unique leaves; they look real. The colors are vibrant but not so bright as to look fake. I would love to someday have real plants, but until then this is the best choice.

I have a 25 gal freshwater tank which looked boring before I decorated it with 12 silk plantssmall, med and large sizes. I arranged the plants around black lava rocks and added a blue background. The plants fan out from either side of the rocks and sway in the water.

The colors of the plants make the colors of the fish stand out more. Plus the fish seem to feel more secure because they can hide among the plants, like they would in the wild. They search the leaves and under the plants for missed food. There are lots of little areas among the plants for the fish to explore and hide. As a pet owner, I feel like it is my responsibility to provide the most comfortable home I can. My little guys seem relaxed and seem to like having these silk plants in their aquarium.

I am happy with these plants. I like the way they add color and texture to my aquarium and my fish like having a more comfortable home.

I really liked the way this plant looked when I got it, it looks great in the water and moves around like a real plant would. I am disappointed because it has stained a lot. I've tried cleaning it, to no avail. I've read that you shouldn't use bleach to clean anything that will go back in an aquarium so it seems that there aren't too many other options. Nice looking plant if you can figure out a way to clean it.

Tetra 77346 Parasite Guard, 8-Tablets

Tetra 77346 Parasite Guard, 8-TabletsTetra 77346 Parasite Guard is excellent for getting rid of anchor worms (Lerea sp.).

Reason for review: instructions on package not clear "For anchor worms ... water change".

I made 3 calls to Tetra with different answers to my questions before the procedure given below was decided upon.

TANK: 35 gallon heavily planted fresh water tank. Details of the tank setup follows the Anchor Worm treatment that I use.

ANCHOR WORM TREATMENT:

DAY 1: (The fish with the Anchor worms were 2 Golden Barbs)

Reduce the water level to 30 gallons.

Remove Filstar Biochem Zorb from canister filter.

Dissolve 3 Parasite Guard tablets in a container of fish-tank water.

Slowly add dissolved tablets to fish tank.

The fish show no signs of being affected by the Parasite Guard.

DAY 3: Remove 25% of water from aquarium.

Add aged water (same temperature as the aquarium water) to get to 30 gal.

Repeat addition of 3 tablets of Parasite Guard.

DAY 5: Repeat DAY 3.

DAY 7: 25% water change.

Reinstall Biochem Zorb.

RESULTS OF TREATMENT:

I was amazed; the blood-red spot surrounding the anchor worm holes were almost gone on DAY 2. On DAY 3 the Anchor Worms were very small. On DAY 4 it was difficult to see the disappearing worms. On DAY 5 the worms were not visible to the naked eye.

ASIDE: The Aquarium

WATER: Age city water by aerating it in 5-gallon buckets for 2 days (no dechlorinators).

FISH: Clown Loaches, Tetras, Neons, Danios, Corydoras, Otocinclus, Barbs, Rasboras, and Platies.

PLANTS: Large Amazon Sword with growth of numerous floating rooted segments, 5 Crinums, narrow leaf chain sword, driftwood covered with Java Fern and, Anubias

FILTRATION:

Filter #1: Rena XP2

LOWER BASKET; Bottom to top: 20ppi foam, 30ppi, Biochem Zorb (or activated charcoal).

UPPER BASKET; Bottom to top: bagged Seachem Matrix, bagged Seachem Purigen amid API Bio-Chem Stars, Filstar XP MicroFiltration pad.

Filter #2: Rena XP1

SINGLE BASKET. Bottom to top: 20ppi foam, 30ppi foam, 1/2 cup bagged Seachem Phosguard, Filstar XP MicroFiltration pad.

I had some internal hexamita in an angelfish/ram cichlid tank. Fish were lethargic and not eating. After the recommended treatment, everybody recovered and is eating normally again.

Note: in acidic water like my tank has, do what the manufacturer recommends and dissolve the tablets in other water first and then add the mixture to the tank water.

Catalina Aquarium CA 3000 Aquarium Pump 1000 GPH

Catalina Aquarium CA 3000 Aquarium Pump 1000 GPHI purchased this because I saw one in a pet store but,it was pricey.I have a sump on my 125 gallon tank and,I needed another pump.I decided not to go back with the one I had so,I decided to try this and,I must say I am disappointed. The price was pretty good but it doesn't push as strong as my old one which was about the same gph. Also the fitting for my sump hose dose not fit snug.

I purchased this item in a setup.(tank, stand, hood, filtration system,etc.)USED. The pump was bad, It looked like it was run dry for a long time. The inside where the impeller goes had gotten hot and was deformed. So I bought a new one of the same type. Seems to work good, it pumps alot of water. The only servicable part is the impeller. It's easy to clean. We'll see how long it lasts. But it works good now.

I bought this to up the flow to my sump. It has an automatic thermostat that turns off when it gets too hot, then back on when it cools down. In 80 degree water that's very 10 minutes. So, it either has a bad self cooling design or the thermostat is super sensitive. I don't need a filter that turns itself off every 10 mins for 5 mins at a time. I'm 50/50 on whether to return it or use the feature as a wave maker in the tank. I prefer a high current in my freshwater 125, so this would put a nice kick up every 10 minutes then relax.

This had nothing that I was told it had. Not only that but it is outdated tech, and the other filters are much better.

Hydor H2Show Lost Civilization - Crystal Skull Decoration 5"x3.5"x4.5"

Hydor H2Show Lost Civilization - Crystal Skull Decoration 5'x3.5'x4.5'The pictures would lead you to believe this skull is clear plastic. Its not. Its white opaque plastic. Yeah, it does LOOK like crystal, but its not what I thought it was. I thought maybe if it gets wet, it will become more clear. Nope. Guess I'll use it with an air stone.

Aquarium Fish Tank Silicone Sea Anemone Artificial Coral Ornament SH220S pu

Aquarium Fish Tank Silicone Sea Anemone Artificial Coral Ornament SH220S puThis has nice authentic detail, but has a strong unpleasant odor. Don't think I would put it in an aquarium with live fish I was just using for a model for science class had nice oral disk detail.

CICHLID COLOR SUP FLOATING

CICHLID COLOR SUP FLOATINGThis is hands down the best food on the market. There is simply nothing better available for Oscars. I fed this to my Oscar. It lived to 12 years 3 months (RIP), was over 13.5" and well over a pound and a half when it passed. The clay covering makes a tremendous difference in water quality and the fish's color quality. I assume it aids digestion, since wild fish spend lots of their time digging food out of the dirt. I have used just about every Oscar food available and no other food produces as little waste as this--which keeps the water cleaner and the fish happier. I would think that the clay is an essential part of a fish's diet that is often lost in an aquarium. I have tried other foods recently with my new fish and once it ate this, anything else gets spit out or spilled from its gills. You will not be disappointed with this food.

Hydor H2Show Magic World - Crystal Ball Decoration for Aquariums

Hydor H2Show Magic World - Crystal Ball Decoration for AquariumsI have a 55 gallon tank and it's pretty big but I really like it. I put lights and in it and have bubbles coming out of it. It does not come with lights or a place to attach an air line but I figured out a way to do that and it's pretty simple.
