Would not buy this kit again. My reasons ; 1) Kit comes with one test tube, so each test must be done one at at a time over a half hour to run all the tests. 2) Foil packets are ridiculous to deal with as compared to liquid. 3) Started a new tank with this kit, for what ever reason, got a lot of false readings, especially nitrate readings.lost a lot of expensive fish due to this. 4) Finally ordered an API liquid test kit, because the Instant Ocean one was showing nearly zero readings on all three tests after almost three months of trying to cycle. 5) When I tested with the API kit, it showed my tank was completely cycled, and the nitrate level was actually a bit high. Don't know why the Instant Ocean was so defective, maybe expired? Who knows, buy the API

I have lots of test kits and really like this one. The chemicals are in sealed foil packets for long life, and the comparator strips are tinted hard plastic instead of paper, which can get wet and fade. Kit comes in a sturdy plastic case to keep it all together. 20 sets of test chemicals are included and refills are available. Highly recommended.

This test kit is as accurate as other I have tried but it uses powered regents for all tests except for the Alkalinity titration test. I prefer the API tests that are more straightforward and quicker to use. Price per test is about the same either way. Comes in a nice plastic case.

I've started replacing all my T5s and T8s systems with this light on 55 gallon aquariums. All my tanks are heavily planted with high to low light needs. This light has been outstanding for my plant growth and colors. The replacement bulbs are a bit more expensive than 5s and 8s but last much longer without dimming with age. High output LEDs are just too expensive and still don't match the quality of this lighting system. I've bought three of these system and all have performed fantastic.

I bought this for a very tall 55g hexagon shaped tank. This tank requires a lot of light penetration but leaves little room for the typical sized fixtures for this volume of water. This size was perfect for the top of the tank, and left enough room to place a second fixture of this size on top if I decided to get some high maintenance flora. The color spectrum is as advertised, on the blue end of daylight. Great for freshwater.

I only have two criticisms. First, as mentioned, the fans are noisy. Far more so than the canister filter I'm using, which sits outside of my tank stand. Secondly, and this may be due to the seller (MarineandReef), there was no documentation included. I would have at least enjoyed seeing some warranty information.

Overall, a very good product, and I would buy again.

When I first started keeping goldfish, I mysteriously lost several fish. I know now I was making all kinds of mistakes common to amateurs. One mistake I made was to assume that all water treatments that claimed to make tap water safe would do the trick. After several of my kiddos died, I asked for help from the owner of my local pet store. This is not a Petco or a Petsmart, but a real mom-and-pop place. The owners really care about their animals.

The store owner told me that years ago when he was first starting out, his fish kept dying. He had a water sample tested independently, and the tester advised him that our local tap water was the second worst water sample he had ever tested. The pet store owner advised me to use Amquel Plus along with NovAqua. Since I have been using these products, I have lost no fish. Since moving to a different place (one with better water quality, I am happy to report), I have continued to use these products as they have been perfectly effective and reliable.

I've had fish tanks all my life, but got more serious about it in the past 8 years. I stumbled upon a great forum, and most of them recommended this product. I took a leap, and have been using it for the past 6 years.

Pros:

Seems to do a great job treating water it's a thankless job, but something has to do it.

Cons:

Smells bad (could be a pro for pranks?) but the smell is gone once you add the water.

I typically measure out the right amount, then dump it in the bottom of a 5 gallon water jug. I fill the jug, then use that to fill the tank. It's worked out great for me, both in planted and non-planted freshwater tanks. This one bottle should last you a while unless you have a huge (100g+) tank.

I purchased this item mainly to remove nitrate and nitrite. By testing it with a test kit, it doesn't do anything as it claims on the bottle. It probably does what it claims, but nothing that would cause a change on the after test. Oh, I also doubled the dosage, NOTHING.

It could be a great water conditioner, since after all those years of being in the business. But if it doesn't do what it claims, its a big fail to me.

API Ammonia Test Strips

Got a new tank and was trying to cycle (with Tetra SafeStart), using these strips to check for ammonia. But, scale resolution is not fine enough, but worse give very inaccurate results it was indicating nothing, but was actually 1.0! Test strip color changes dramatically depending upon what light you are looking at it under (especially fluorescent vs incandescent looked green vs light brown).

Skip this and go for the real dropper test kit it about the same price and waaaay more accurate.

It is not as accurate as a TEST KIT such as API Freshwater Master Test Kit.

Not always easy to read the strip.

Lee's Kritter Keeper, Medium Rectangle w/Lid, Label

This size kritter keeper holds about three gallons of water. I've found it makes a good hospital tank for ill fish. Its the perfect size so dispensing medications is more cost effective. Plus, you can route in a penn plax smallworld filter (minus carbon, because that takes medication out of the water). Sick fish need aeration, and it works in this small tank.

Never, ever make this kritter keeper a home for goldfish. Contrary to popular belief, goldfish need lots of water to make up for the massive amount of waste they produce. This size would be alright for a betta (who should never have less than a gallon of water, again, contrary to popular belief), maybe a trio of guppies if you have a filter.

This kritter keeper is great, as long as you know how to properly use it.

I recommend this product for keeping pets that don't gnaw or chew like crickets, small tarantulas, hermit crabs and ,my favorite, walking sticks. I am using the 8 Kritter Keepers I bought to start rare seeds indoors in pots. The clear door between the carry handles allows me to see from the top how my seedlings are doing and work inside the Kritter Keeper. The lids come in 6 colors all of which are bright and cheery. When not in use they can be cleaned and stacked together. I love my Kritter Keepers!

I recently bought a second crowntail Betta named Osiris as a next door neighbor for my red veiltail Betta Anubis. At the time, I only had a half gallon bowl to house Osiris. I knew it was only going to be a temporary home for Osiris. As a Betta lover, I would never house my fish in anything less than a gallon permanently. Unfortunately I do not have that much room in my tiny one bedroom apartment myself so I thought the medium Kritter Keeper would be ideal for Osiris. With the addition of blue gravel and a few plastic plants, my Betta is now thriving in his new home. He has lots of room to swim around which is a vast improvement from that dinky plastic bowl I had kept him in, or the plastic cup he was in at the pet store where I bought him. As for changing his water, I never pick up the tank by the handle. It is best to carry it by the tank itself. As someone who lives by herself in a small one bedroom apartment with not a lot of surface space with two male Bettas, I certainly can recommend the Kritter Keeper for people in similiar situations who owns Bettas. Osiris loves his new home. He has already blown a bubble nest in it.

I have owned similar items over many years. These are very expensive where I live and I was happy to find them on Amazon.com for a reasonable price with free shipping. For those unhappy with the cover colors, it does say in the description that colors are "assorted." These are plastic, so one has to take care that they are not dropped or scratched with hard objects. Also the handles are not meant for heavy lifting; these can be easily lifted from their bottoms without the stretch and distortion common to thin-walled plastic containers.

That being said, I received two of these and both have stood up well. The bases are sturdy, despite being filled with water for my bettas. The covers securely snap to the bases. The central opening also snaps securely. I have owned other brands of kritter keepers and the central openings were not secure so that I had to place a heavy objects on the tops to keep my critters from escaping.

My bettas enjoy the space. It's true that bettas can be kept in small containers but they become lethargic and depressed. I "upsized" their swimming area, added a few more floating plants (alas, plastic ones), and they've come to life. I've been rewarded with bettas that swim and strut their glorious fins and colors.

Although the dimensions say 11.9 x 7.8 x 8.1 inches, the dimensions of the actual plastic tank (not including the cover) are 11 x 6.5 x 6 inches. This is equal to 1.85 gallons. I was expecting a tank that could hold around 3 gallons because I foolishly used the dimensions listed here. I noticed that my tank could hold less than 2 gallons when I was doing a water change and noticed I had only siphoned out 1 gallon of water and the water level was under the halfway point in the tank. Other than that this is a pretty good tank if used temporarily for a sick fish, like I am doing.

I have been feeding my fish with these for a while now and the Thera-A is my favorite formula for staple feeding. I have been using the 1mm size for most of my fish (even though their small the fish find them easily enough), and was happy to see that they came out with a medium, large, and jumbo pellet for my larger fish. My fish relish these pellets and the fact that they have an extra ingredient allicin(more garlic!!)that helps with their immunity and fights parasites is a real bonus. I think it really helped when i started my clown loach colony, as it seems everytime I introduced a new clown loach they would ALL get ich again! That was when NLS was new and since feeding them the thera-a they never had problems with ich with newcomers, as well as no problems with wasting syndrome. NLS is one of if not the best fish food for all fish on the market today and contains some of the best ingredients. They do as they state, keep my fish happy and healthy. This formula has the perfect protein content to me not too high and not too low. Too high protein seems to shorten the lifespan of fish and too low seems to hurt their growth potential. The Thera-a is right in the middle in terms of protein compared to other formulas. I would recomend this product as well as any other product produced by NLS to anybody who really cares for their fish. It may cost a little more than cheaper brands but it is the best. Now they have to make a floating formula for the Thera-a so I can mix some floating with sinking for all my fish!

Great product. Plenty of room for my skimmer, uv sterilizer and heater in the first section. The refugium section is pretty big too. I have two decent sized rocks in there with plenty of sand and there is still enough room for a few damsels. It did ship with a small crack in it (looked to be from shipping, the box was slightly damaged near the crack). The seller was more than happy to work with me and replace it, but it was more hassle for me to return it than fix it because the (small) crack was above where the water level would ever be. I would definitely recommend this product and this seller.

Rena Air 200 Air Pump

This air pump works but it pretty regularly starts making a very loud noise as if it is revving up an unseen engine before the green flag comes down. Unfortunately, it won't stop making this noise until you pick it up, look it over for some hint about why the air pump sounds like an experimental music festival, and then put it back down. Even if you put it in the exact same spot, the Rena Air 200 seems satisfied because it will return to the quiet hum...for a half-hour or so.

I gave it to Goodwill who will hopefully help it find use some place out of ear shot.

I've owned my Rena 200 now for 6+ years and am VERY happy. It's so quiet--almost silent. It is just now starting to loose some of its original power, though still performing well enough for my 30 gallon tank. I'll be replacing the diaphram with the rebuild kit and be ready to go for another run--maybe another 6 years. Great pump. The other reviews which mention the noise are NOT what I have experienced--like I said, running 6+ years now and all super quiet!

High quality pump that can be adjusted from zero to full output. I'm using it for a bring shrimp grow out container so it is tuned very low. The pump isn't completely quiet and will output a high pitched hum which is probably outside of the hearing frequency range for many adults, however if you can hear it placing the pump inside a cabinet will squelch the sound.

This fulfilled all its promises. It arrived quickly. The box was fine, and the peat moss inside the box was exactly as advertised. The peat was not in granules, like many of the canister filter media peat, but loose and fluffy and dirt-like, exactly like the peat you'd use in a garden.

I got this because I was paranoid about using garden peat, and while this is a perfectly good product, it is so expensive (you get about enough to fill a quart or less), next time I will probably just skip it and use organic peat moss meant for gardening.

Aquatop PF25-UV Hang-On Filter with UV Sterilization

This review is for; Aquatop PF25-UV Hang-On Filter with UV Sterilization

I only had this filter running in my 28-gallon tall hex tank for just over a month & have been very pleased with it so far. My acrylic tall, aquarium only has a 7" opening for back-hanging filters, so at 6.5" wide this filter was a prefect fit. Note that it is very important that the lip of your aquarium must be 3/4" OR LESS. Any lip thicker than 3/4" & this filter WILL NOT fit. Fortunately the lip of my tank is exactly 5/8". My tank is for Marine fish as I have damsels, cleaner shrimp, live corals & some other live invertebrates.

The filter also comes with a small bag of ceramic rings (usefull for biological purposes) in addition to the standard disposable cartridge with activated carbon. The filter does have a surface skimmmer that does skim the surface of the water, but unlike traditional protein skimmers there is no collection cup to clean. The flow rate is adjustable by a simple turn of the knob on the top part of the filter near the intake tubes. The unit pump is very quiet. My aquarium is in my living room, so I could hardly hear it when I'm watching television. The only noise I hear is the water from the filter going back to the tank.

The UV sterilizer works on a separate switch and can operate independently from the filter's main pump. I run my filter 24-7, but I turn my UV sterilizer off or on occasionally. When it is on you see just a a slight glow on the bottom of the filter which helps me to remind me that it is on. To replace the bulb, you just unscrew the bottom assembly that houses the bulb.

Overall, I like the quality & value of this filter so far, but time will tell to see how it holds up. If you buy this filter & install it please insure that all of the plastic parts are not cracked and that they all snap together firmly. I made a slight mistake on the intake tube near the top part of the filter in which two pieces were not firmly snapped togther & I had some water run down the side of my tank! Yikes, but it was easily fixed. Overall, you can't beat the price/value for an outside filter, surface skimmer & UV sterilzer all in one unit. Recommended!

If you own a planted aquarium that has a basic lighting system, and you use a minimum amount of fertilizer, your filter is probably good enough to keep your water clear.

However, if you use a hi-tech lighting system such as T-5, or metal halide, injected CO2, and planted and liquid fertilizers, then you are going to have a nearly impossible time keeping your water clean.

The problem with these hi-tech systems is that they generate so many nutrients in the water table of an aquarium, that bacteria and algae not only thrive in such situation, they can actually grow exponentionally when exposed to them.

This will leave you with either very cloudy water from all of the new bacteria as they replicate, or green water from algae as it replicates. One of the other tends to dominate an aquarium with a hi-tech lighting system.

For example, when using a GLO T5 lighting system, pressurized CO2, and liquid and planted fertilizer. this author has had many algae blooms in my aquariums.

The only way that I could clear the water was with the use of a Vortex D1 diatom filter.

And even then, within a day the water turned green again.

So I decided to purchase an AquaTop IL-10UV inline ultraviolet sterilizer to see if it could get rid of the algae blooms.

The IL-10UV ($40) worked so well for one of my planted tanks, that I decided to purchase an AquaTop PF-UV25 for my Aqueon 20 long planted aquarium. I have only owned the PF-UV25 for about two weeks, however, it managed to clean the green water in this aquarium within a matter of 24 hours.

I also like the fact that the PF-UV25 has a separate mains plug for the uv sterilizer bulb, since this allows me to extend the life of this bulb by using it less frequently.

The PF-UV25's power supply is a well made unit with some heft to it, that includes an on-off switch. And this makes it very convenient to use.

The unit's intake tube also includes both a surface skimmer as well as a check valve. I like the inclusion of the check valve, since hob filters tend to drain their water back into the aquarium during a power outage, which might damage a hot uv bulb. I say this since the water is used to keep the bulb cool. So even if the bulb is turned off, it may still be hot enough to crack if the water surrounding its housing is rapidly drained from the PF-UV25's filter housing during a blackout.

Even though the PF-UV25 offers just mechanical and chemical filtration, it is a must for a planted aquarium where hi-tech lighting and injected CO2 are used.

Moreover, if the PF-UV25 stands up as well as my Aquaclear hob filters, this line of filters will be copied by many other manufacturers of hob and canister filters, since they do a superior job of filtering an aquarium.

Some critics of inexpensive uv sterilizers have claimed that the poor quality of the uv bulbs included with these units cannot kill off bacteria.

However, I have seen the PF-UV25 clear an aquarium so full of bacteria that the water was very cloudy, overnight. So these uv sterilizers do work in spite of being inexpensive.

They also clear up green water and prevent it from coming back as long as they are used several times a week ( or kept on 24/7).

I use canister filters for biological filtration. In my 20 gallon long heavily planted aquarium, I use an Eheim 2213 for biological and mechanical filtration, and the AquaTop PF-UV25 for mechanical filtration and uv sterilization. The combination works quite well, and my fish have never looked healthier, or more energetic than they have since I added uv sterilization to my aquariums.

Hats off to AquaTop for making affordable uv systems for aquaria that have made keeping planted aquariums with hi-tech lighting systems very easy to maintain!

I ordered this product and received it in a timely manner, however the UV bulb was broken. The package had no cushion at all. I called the company and they promptly sent me a new one. This time the outer casing was cracked! I didn't want to wait again, so I took the first one apart, used the casing on it, and now have a working filter.

It's too bad that they don't take the time to properly package this item, as it works wonderfully, once you can get one that isn't damaged!

when i took it out of the box there was carbon pellets all over the place and I found a piece of glass that can't possibly have broken during shipping, it had to have been broken prior. I have to say it looks used as well. Returning and won't order again.

Underwater Galleries AUG9447 Tiny Java Man Head Glo Fish Decor

I have a divided aquarium with betta fish on either side, and put this item on one side. Soon afterward, that entire side of the tank was being overrun by brown algae-on the live plants, on the tank's walls, and of course on the Glo Head decor. I looked into the causes of brown algae and reconditioned the water to remove nitrate and other materials diatoms need to thrive from the tank. I cleared the entire tank out, cleaned everything, and cycled the tank. Without thinking about it, I put the Glo Head on the opposite side of the tank from where it previously rested. Soon, more brown algae started enveloping the side of the tank on which the Glo Head was placed. The only conclusion to be drawn is that because this item is made of some kind of stone and is not covered by any protective glaze or coating, it contains the minerals that are needed for brown algae to form and spread. I have removed the Glo Head, and after about two weeks, the brown algae is almost gone.

Even if the Glo Head didn't promote algae growth, I wouldn't buy it again, as it barely glows and that weak glow only emanates from the eyebrow area and a few dots on the face.

Kind of. Just the eyebrows seem to glow. I guess that's less creepy than the whole head but it would have been nice if it just had a little more glow to it.

i have led lighting for my glow fish with a bright setting for day time and a dark setting( blue light) for night time. i was expecting this to glow under the dark setting but it does not. the only time it glows is if all the lights are completely turned off, but then i cant see my fish, so i was a tad bit disappointed, however my fish love to hide and swim through the mouth so its a good decoration

This net allows for great water flow and allows the baby fish to be in the same water as the adults safely. Mine came with some little plastic plants for the babies to hide in. Place the female in here to give birth, then take her out when she's done so she won't eat them. After about 8 weeks, they will be large enough to go into the big tank. A big problem with raising baby fish is over feeding. this net allows extra food to fall out into the main tank and the adults will eat it.

I'm currently using it to isolate an aggressive fish. It works. The construction is very basic -2 plastic rectangles connected by 4 plastic sticks, with a net stretched over it. The construction doesn't appear durable and I expect something to fail after several rounds of assembly/disassembly.

The "hooks" to attach the net to the tank are flexible metal plates that you bend around the edge of the tank. It's ugly, not sturdy, can easily break, and don't appear replaceable. They don't hold the net evenly in place -the front edge hangs 1/2" lower than the back. I had to lower the water level in the tank to ensure that the front of the net is above the water line.

Overall, it's fine for occasional use and the price is right. But I'd get something better for prolonged use, especially if it's going into a display tank.

I read all the reviews and thought this was the best breeder for my molly. Most of these breeders seem to get lackluster reviews, so I thought I would take a chance on this one.

It's cheap. For what I need, it's serviceable, but barely. I put it together easily enough until I got to the netting. It's too small. So the net only goes up to almost touch the top. The pictures on the box have it coming over the top four corners and therefore staying secure. It's just poorly made.

Also the hooks don't really work for my tank. I have a 55 gallon, the standard kind. But the hooks aren't nearly long enough to hook over the top and have the net submerged. They aren't even long enough to actually hook over the frame on the the top. And then of course I wouldn't be able to close the lid all the way.

So, I took a piece of styrofoam and created a float to hook the hooks on. I had to use a second piece on the front to compensate for the net not going all the way to the top. This effort was less than it would have taken to send it back, since everyone is complaining about all of them.

Then I found out that mollies are pregnant for somewhere around a month (I thought she was really fat, but she's not anywhere near ready) so I let her out, and took the breeder out of the tank. When she is ready, I'm going to try replacing the netting with nylon stocking. Hopefully that will work.

If you really need something and you are willing to get cheap and shoddy workmanship for a small amount of money, then go ahead. But if you want quality that will last, and work properly, this is not the breeder for you.

Eheim Pro 3 Aquarium Filter Model 2073

I bought the Pro 3 2075 brand new in Sept 2012 that came with a 3 year warranty. The filter leaked after 2 years destroying my $350 wooden stand. Water leaked out near the power cord. After searching the net I found out that this was a common issue among Pro 3 filters made before Aug 2010. There have also been countless reports of Eheim's Customer Support department ignoring customer emails when contacted for warranty claims.

I emailed them and immediately the next day I received a reply asking for the Serial number, the shipping address and the retail store from which I bought the filter. I replied with the information and that was the last I heard from them. I have sent them 4 more emails since then and they completely ignored them. I have been another victim of their scam.

Apparently Eheim is engaging in fraudulent acitivities, marketing their filters as "Premium" products that come with a 3 year warranty. However, they will try their best NOT to honor the warranty. Maybe I need to call them everyday and write nasty letters to get them to acknowledge my issue. I know some of their victims have received a replacement head unit this way after sending threatening emails and making repeated phone calls. However, it shouldn't have to be this difficult.

I have another Pro 2 filter that also leaked after 6 years of operation. From what I have heard, the company was bought and the quality of customer service has become horrible since then. It is now reaching the point of fraud.

I will never buy another Eheim product again. Beware!!!

I've owned two eheim canister filters the most recent being the Pro3. Both were disappointing! While they do have lots of room for media when they work they work well. The problem is that they are difficult to prime and in my experience they were nothing but a problem. Both units failed to maintain flow. The unit would be operating normally producing a good steady flow. I would come back a few hours later and it would be coming out in a trickle. I would reset and again it would produce a nice flow. Few hours later a trickle. I contacted tech support requesting assistance in trouble shooting the problem...no response after several attempts. I'm done. I'm done with eheim! I'll never buy one again.

I've had this filter for over a year. Recently had a problem where I could not get the nozzles to eject from the motor head. This was very frustrating I had moved the lever to the release position, pushed on the red button, and the nozzles would not pop off. I eventually tore the entire filtering system out of the tank and brought the whole set up to the sink to take a closer look at the problem. After a frustrating couple of days, I did find an Eheim sales rep and she told me that when reinserting the nozzle fixture back into the motor, the lever on the motor needs to be totally in the release position (not half way, not partial way). If the lever is not entirely in the release position, pushing the nozzle fixture into the motor will cause misloading and you will never be able to get the nozzles out of the motor again. End of story need to get an entirely new motor head! I looked on the Eheim site and never saw any reference to this problem. Anyway, just a fyi. I got my motor replaced for no charge and now I am very careful when inserting the nozzles back into the motor. Don't rush and make the same mistake I did. Other than this problem, I love this canister filter. It is my first and I hope the last filter I will ever need. Filtration is fantastic, prefilter works great, and I can get this thing cleaned out and attached back to the tank with little effort and no mess.
