Hydor Koralia Nano 240 Aquarium Circulation Pump 240 GPH

Bought this for my planted 37 gallon tank to circulate a dead spot in my aquarium. This is my 1st Koralia or water circulation pump and was worried that it would blow away my fish and plants all over so I bought this under sized one instead of the Koralia Nano 425 which was rated for my tank size. I was surprised at how it circulates well for a big tank. It creates a dispersed and gentle current, unlike a powerhead that blasts a stream of water in a single direction. My fish has also perked up, they seem to like the gentle current and I often see them swimming around it. Also, it's nice to see the leaves on my plant sway with the current.

As for my dead spot, this little thing took care of it and water is clearer. I have it aimed down and towards my Fluval C4 and any detritus or fish poop is pushed towards it. The magnetic suction cup is awesome, it gives you flexibility of putting this Koralia anywhere in your tank without worrying about the suction cup wearing out. Did I mention the size of this thing? It's slightly larger than an egg but does not take up a lot of space. Others have mentioned the red ball clip that attaches to the magnetic suction cup may break, but in my experience it's a solid piece and unless you are putting a lot of force and stress on it, then yes it will break.

If you are looking to create cross flow in a small nano (I use it on my Nano cube 12) this is perfect. I had a much larger water mover in there, and it was just too much.. This is powerful enough for small tanks and created a great flow throughout the tank when paired with the Hydor spinner on the tanks pump output.

I do not think I would use this on anything larger then a 12 or bio cube 14. If I where to have a 20 long, or even a 28 nano cube I would opt for something a little more powerful.

It is small, and not very obstructive of viewing even when placed towards the front of the tank.

I really love this product. This is my second one. I searched for the smallest size and this is what I came up with. My fish seems to struggle with my larger one like they were in a sea storm which I really didn't like it seem to stress them out. I found this and I love it and the fish love it they can swim in calm sea's again! It's a great product just right for what I was looking for. Thanks to the reviews, I decided to give this pump a try for my 9 gallon Eheim Aquastyle saltwater nano. I've been in the hobby over 10 years mostly heavily planted, aquascaped freshwater tanks in the past from 50g to 0.5g. I've always been very pleased with the Hydor products and this one is no exception. For the quality, price and function, this is a great pump, especially on Amazon. I wouldn't go cheaper with a more inferior brand or even a more costly one that does the same thing.

I found other reviews with tank descriptions especially helpful so here's mine: my saltwater nano has 1 clownfish, 1 cleaner shrimp, cuc's and several soft corals of starburst polyps, kenya tree, pulsing xenia and mushrooms live rock and 1 inch live sand (sand is more aesthetics). Eheim's tanks are beautiful on their own, so every accessory counts going in. Most importantly, I didn't want the other inhabitants blown in a circle or with such force that they would have to hide in a corner of rock. Sure enough, based on the reviews and other research on fish boards, the open flow of this pump is gentle enough in the tank for everyone. Based on my live rock formation, I have the pump on the back left side, a little lower than mid-tank directing current toward the opposite wall with the corner filter (sand gets kicked up if placed lower). The pump creates a soft current that wraps nicely around the rocks to give the corals a gentle sweeping effect in combo with the filter flow overhead. The starburst polyps have already grown larger in the past week and the CUC's are out and about more often in the light. Another benefit is that the sand has been cleaner too, even as I increased my light hours for better tank viewing in winter.

Since I have only had the pump 2 weeks, I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars. As other reviewers mentioned, there is a slight hum to my otherwise nearly silent tank. But the animals all seem more lively and "happier" with the added flow so I'm keeping it. If the vibration gets much louder or circulation fades, I'll likely replace it with another one. Hopefully the sound remains minimal and pump lasts a couple years. If so, I would vote 5 of 5. Cheers and happy reef/fish keeping!

AQUARIUS AQ1224 Aquarium LED Light Strip - Expandable 18 to 24, 91 LED Lamps

Bought this for my 10 gallon quarantine tank, and it looked nice online with 91 LED's and what not, but when plugged in, the day light setting isn't all that bright. It seems to be more of a dusk or dawn lighting system instead. Although it does make the glofish pop having the blue in there. In any case ~ it seems to be built pretty well, but during the night time the tank is definitely more blue than anything else.

I own 3 of this aquarium light and I have had enough of them.

Some basic info:

91 3-5mm LED bulbs, 49 White, 42 Blue, placed in a look-alike T8 fluorescent tube

Worldwide voltage, regulated PSU @ 24V

Total power consumption @ 5W

Simple (outdated) non-regulated LED circuit 7 LEDs in a group with a 180ohm resistor

LEDs rated for ~30,000 hours

First light:

Came without a PSU. Returned it for another one.

Second light:

Complete package. Worked well for 3 weeks @ 12 hours a day till one of the group of 7LEDS went dead.

Third light:

Brand new, it was obviously brighter compared to my 2nd light. I wasn't sure whether it was because of the fault in the 2nd light but time will tell.

Two months into usage of the lights.

I am absolutely certain that the light output is decreasing. The third light is no longer as bright as before, now it is just dim. Needless to say for the second light, dimmer.

To summarises:

Unreliable; Not bright at all; Expensive for what it is

Seriously, just stick with fluorescent lights till LEDs have their reliability proved.

There is no way this LED light will achieve 30,000 rated hours at the rate it is getting dim. Actually, LED lights have a rating which states how long they will sustain the bright before decreasing in output. The last time I checked, most LEDs are rated 3000hours only.

Most fluorescent lights at rated for 10,000 hours and they have a relatively constant light output.

I ran out of the normal water conditioner I used, I so I went to my local Petco and found Bowl Buddies. I decided to give the product a try and took it home, followed all of the directions exactly as they were written, and placed my fish back into his bowl. This tank is far too small and a bad shape to be a healthy place for a betta to live. If you want to get a fish, get one as a pet and treat it as such, with the same care and consideration you'd give to any pet. It's not a decorative item, it's a living thing. A betta looks just as pretty in a decent-sized tank of at least a gallon as it does in something like this, anyway. You want scenery, put a picture behind the tank. If you use this product, you're likely to be decorating with a dead fish within a couple of months.

This a great size aquarium, it came in bigger then expected. The stand that the aquarium is placed on is not sturdy. It is made very cheap. My aquarium almost fell off of it. I will prob. just sell this one, and get a nicer aquarium for my betta. It is truly not worth the money.

This is the most unbelievable product I have seen to date for Betta Fish. Next thing people will have them inside a matchbox. This product is both inhumane, inadequate and cruel. Betta fish are tropical fish that require a heated tank, space to swim..... yup, imagine that, a very gentle filter, fresh plants and a minimum of 3 gallons. I have mine in 5 gallon and 10 gallon tanks.

I am so disappointed at Amazon for selling this product. It just perpetuates the myth that Betta fish are disposable and that they are essentially toys.

Aqueon 06111 Aquarium Water Changer Extension, 20-Foot

We bought this for more hose length to maintain tanks that are far away from water sources. One reason I chose the Aqueon hose to begin with was the relative stiffness of the hose. I don't want kinks in the line while I am stringing water across the house. However, the extension hose is NOT the same tubing that was used on the original and does have a tendency to kink. This is not to say it's as flimsy as the cheap tubing you can buy at the hardware store, but it doesn't hold up the way the original hose does. I don't have an alternative to suggest, but do keep in mind that it's a bit flimsy.

I've had several aquarium syphons over the years and I'm quite satisfied with Aqueon. I'll have to say that the 20' extension needs improvement when it comes to construction and design. The hose is not wide enough to allow sufficient water flow once it's connected to the main syphon. A wider hose would help. I believe this is due to the plastic connector that is used to attach the extension to the main hose. The most important improvement I would suggest is the material of the connector fragile PVC plastic. The connector is very sensitive and when I tightened one end to the main hose it broke. It's not that I over tightened the connector, it's just made out of cheap plastic. An aluminum connector or maybe a stronger material would make this product useful. I'll have to make my own connector to be able to use the extension without a leak on my living room floor. Decent product cheap material.

The picture is clearly misleading. It shows the filters for the replacement kit, but what you see, sure as heck isn't what you get. I used the picture as a guide as to what would be included in the order, but all I got was a huge box with a tiny piece of foam that wasn't worth 10 cents, much less than $10. What gives? I've had fish tanks in my home for more than 40 years. I tried them all. These are the best I've tried so far. Plenty of very fine bubbles for their size with little back pressure. You can extend their life a little by soaking them in a 10 to 1 mixture of water and bleach for the night. Rince well the next morning and they should be good as new. Do this only once because after that it will not revive them anymore. But at this price with Amazon Prime, you can just replace them when they start to clog.

There's nothing horribly wrong with these except that they are very small air stones. If you are looking to make a lot of bubbles, then you need to get a bigger stone.

HYDRO-SPONGE FILTER V HS950 (125GAL)

Most aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge V is intended for tanks up to 120 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water circulation.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

The reason these filters are so good is that they are safe for fish fry. I have never had a baby get stuck on it. But with other filters this can happen all to easy. A great filter for baby tanks for any type of fish.

I've used power filters for almost 40 years, and last year I replaced my Ehiem with two of these filters in a 55 gallon tank. Never again do you need an expensive filter, nor do you have to buy new pads or worry about a leak (my biggest worry with the Ehiem).

These Hydro are as good, or better than any power filter, and easier. Every few months, I rinse out the filter, and that's it! Just make sure you use tank water when cleaning filter, so you do not kill the good bacteria.

It's great for fry as well.

The only problem is that they are UGLY and take up a lot of space. I could have bought the smaller size, and I'm sure it would work just as well. I wish they would make them in green. They are so cheap, I would throw away the black ones and buy the green....

can't really tell how well it works, when i lift the tube above the water level of the tank it doesn't seem to push water out of the tube when in theory it really should. strange.

however stuff does get stuck to it, especially at the top of the sponge so there must be suction, and it should be more than enough for the bacteria to get water movement.

3 stars because of the filter. Upgraded from a 10 gallon to this 20 gallon; bought at PetSmart. Main reason I chose this model/kit is because it seemed like the hood and light are replaceable, and the rectangular tank size standard for other vendor's parts if needed. The second is that the LED light fixture is protected by a clear window on the hood, so it won't get corroded by water splashing up from the filter or evaporation.

UPDATE 5/1/2012: Replaced since purchasing 2 months ago Filter, Hood, and Light because the Bio-Wheel filter splashed water everywhere including up onto the wall behind the tank, which become extremely noticeable after I treated the tank with salt. What a mess, plus if you don't keep the water level up, the splashy sounds are super-loud. Replaced the filter with an Aqua-Clear, and will keep the Bio-Wheel as a back-up. Then, my low-light plants failed to thrive because I'd moved the tank further from the window and the LED isn't for plants, so bought an Aqueon glass canopy and T5 light strip but still use the LEDs from the kit, too, especially the blue at night. Plants are great now, but I like the hood in the kit better than the glass canopy, and hope MarineLand comes out with a light for plants that fits.

i have had this heater for a few weeks. its in my 55 gal. it is a quality heater. a thick cord. good suction cup holder. safety feature in case you forget to unplug. keeps temp in my tank at 80F. easy to set dial. indicator light tells you when its heating.

one note... if you place jager heaters in less water then they are rated for, you need to set the temp lower by as much as 5 degrees.

for example i have a 75w in a 10 gal filled with 5 gals. set at 76F thermometer reads at 80-81F.

The Jager heaters are the best. I just got back in keeping tanks again. I have another brand on my 55 but I am using this one on my 29. I will be replacing the 55's heater with a jager asap.

I have 2 of these in my 90 gallon tank. I have the temp set at 79F and I have never seen the temp at anything other than 79F. They hardly ever kick on, and when they do they aren't on for long. I keep my house at around 70F, so they do a very good job at regulating the temp in my aquarium.

Mine came with instructions only in Chinese (or another Far East language). That's not a huge problem, it's easy to set up.

The CO2 supply is in an awkward position (pointing directly towards the back, where the device is supposedly attached via its suction cups).

But the real issue for me was that the device is loud. I could hear it clearly even after placing it in the sump, in the aquarium cabinet, with the door closed. I tried changing its position, no result. So for me, since my aquarium is in the living room, this device is useless.

So far so good. Does a lot better than the other expensive diffuser I used to have. Easy to clean.

Just because a betta CAN live in a tank this size doesn't mean they SHOULD. YOU can live in a carboard box, but you'd probably hate it. Betta's need five gallons of water to be happy. Tanks like this are cruel.

This was a gift for my grandson. I really wanted to give him something unique. He really enjoys it as a fish aquarium.
