Hagen Marina Naturals Foreground Silk Plant, Small, Red
I have a 25 gal freshwater tank which I decorated with 12 silk plantssmall, med and large sizes. I arranged the plants around 2 black lava rocks and added a blue background. The colors of the plants look nice with the black rocks and the blue background. The plants fan out from either side of the rocks and sway in the water.
The colors of the plants make the colors of the fish stand out more. Plus the fish seem to feel more secure because they can hide among the plants like they would in the wild. They search the leaves and under the plants for missed food. There are lots of little areas among the plants for the fish to explore and hide. As a pet owner, My little guys seem relaxed and like having these silk plants in their aquarium.
I am happy with these plants. I like the way they add color and texture to my aquarium and my fish like having a more comfortable home.I like all the Hagen silk plants we've gotten so far. They have nice coloring and they're very soft for your little fish. And so far they stand up well in the water.

This is a very nice decoration in my small tank. For some reason which I do not know the answer, algae does not grow on this piece, while algae grow on my other silk plants.Read Best Reviews of Hagen Marina Naturals Foreground Silk Plant, Small, Red Here
This plant added so much life to my tank. its soft for my betta. Some of the plant released some of the silk but only a little, a week after using. One thing I dont like about it is that all the leaves are really clumped together and wont separate. I dont like how they are arranged.

This is currently in use in our fry net for hiding space. I like that it is silk so there are no sharp edges or corners for the fry to hurt themselves on. It does sink to the bottom without any gravel/sand/rocks so that is a plus. It has a very natural movement to it, but a very unnatural look. I would not suggest you purchase this if you want a "natural" tank.Tuesday, June 24, 2014

API Filstar XP-S Canister Filter
The only thing I'd warn against is don't cut the plastic tubes too short. Initially we cut them to suit our exact needs, but we later changed the height of our aquarium and for the new set-up the tubes were too short to reach the top. We didn't leave ourselves any extra, so don't make the same mistake we did.

I purchased this filter from Big Al's at about the same prize as Amazon had it. It is for one of my turtle tanks, two sliders on a 40 gallon breeder with about 12 gallon total volume. After a fairly easy initial set-up (you'll have to grease the hoses with vaseline for them to go in all the way) and priming following detailed instructions (the canister is currently located at the same level as the aquarium water, making it a bit tricky to completely fill in the canister compartments), I noticed at times a gargling noise, the canister was taking micro-bubbles. Upon further inspection I noticed a small leak from the electric line outlet at the motor housing. I thought maybe I got a Dud, however, instead of returning or calling for technical support, I decided to fill in around the cable with some of my aquarium safe silicon and ...vuala, the leak was corrected as well as the noise. Now what I have is a very powerful filter (it cleaned my turtle tank in a matter of minutes), crystal clear water, nice outflow through a spraybar outlet and it's even quieter than my eheim eccho. So quiet you can barely hear a faint huming...If I didn't see the spray bar outflow, I would have to put my ear on it, or touch it to feel the vibration and see if it's working. I also disconected the tubing valve, for a test maintenance rehearsal to know that it will be very easy to do so when required. Also you don't have to prime again since the hoses seal once you separate the tubing valve from the canister motor compartment. Just lift the level, a clean, easy and dry operation. Clean-up will be a breeze. Overall I'm very satisfied with this baby, I would have given it a 5 star ratings if it wasn't for the the initial water/air leak described above (maybe a manufacturing defect on my unit). I would remommend this to a friend and I would certainly buy again. I'll have to monitor long term performance, but so far, I'm satisfied with this product. If you decide to buy this filter, consider an upgrade to the xp2 or xp3. I know I would.I have used differen canister filters in the past for my fresh water 55 gal aquarium. Fluval and Marineland. So far this one is my favorite. It runs so quiet compared to the other ones I cannot hear it at all. The only problem I had was trying to fit the hose into the tubing. It is quite a task. But one it is done, it is a filter I am the most content with.I have a 20 gallon turtle tank and it has been SPOTLESS every since I bought this product on July 10th, 2012. The filter is a bit difficult to assemble but it is totally worth it. (there are also tutorials on youtube to help you assemble it step by step) The tubes are a bit tight fitting so MAKE SURE you use some olive oil, veggie oil, or vaseline so they slide on easier. The filter is super silent and the pressure of the water coming out of can be turned up for even more cleaning power or tuned down for silence while you sleep. Hand down best turtle filter I have ever owned. There is not one speck of algae, food, or poop on the floor. Totally worth the money. This has made owning a turtle the easiest task on the planet. I plan to move up to a bigger size tank because I know this filter can handle it. I LOVE IT. Highly recommend this filter to anyone with a turtle tank under 45 gallons.Sunday, June 15, 2014

Kordon Amquel Plus Water Conditioner
When using AmQuel Plus one must remember that when running water tests be sure to use Ammonia tests that do not use the "Nessler" regeants as it will give you a false or inaccurate readings .Some fish tank maintenance products do not work well with, and can even be toxic when combined with tap water conditioners containing "stress coat" ingredients. This product works perfectly for water conditioning without adding unneccessary "stress coat" ingredients. I was very happy to find this product after reading the warning about stress coat on another fish tank maintenance product I use! Amquel+ is a smelly product, but it works great!
Buy Kordon Amquel Plus Water Conditioner Now
Just make sure you don't overdose it. Although it says it removes nitrates and nitrites, many tests will show the same nitrates and nitrites after using this product. It just makes them non-toxic (binds them, as someone else said here in the review) , but doesn't remove them. it's done that way to maintain balance in the aquarium without killing beneficial bacteria. So if you think , the nitra(e)tes are still there and you keep upping the dose, you'll lower your ph to a very low level and also create oxygen reduction in your tank and kill all the fish. Also these products , when used make sure your water is well aerated. This is very essential esp. at higher temperatures above 70F as warmer water has lesser oxygen and adding such products will still lower them. So just use recommended dosage and wait 24-48 hours until next partial water change and use again. Some ppl mistakenly do these things and thing that the product is poison. It's not. It worked well for me. Life saver. And don't rely on this product and just ignore partial water changes. Do the things you do normally. If you don't do your groundwork and expect sudden magic to happen , it's not going to. Plus its' hard to monitor overdosing when you think you're not getting right readings.Personally if you're using this to remove ammonia, your tank is not cycled (even to the first level) and you've no business keeping fish in them and traumatizing them. If you're cycled, and if you still see ammonia, then you're really overcrowding or overfeeding your tank.
I use this product mainly when my 2nd or 3rd cycle (nitrate, nitrites) have trouble getting removed (which is common sometimes). And word of wisdom is it's not wise to use your fish as guinea pig during cycling. It's very traumatizing for them. create a good cycle first and make sure it works and then slowly add fish little by little.

I use this product to dechlorinate tap water for water changes, but I would NOT recommend it as a REPLACEMENT for water changes as it significantly reduces your pH. If you continually add it to your tank without any water changes in hopes of maintaining proper water parameters, you will end up with a pH around 6.0-6.2. My goldfish actually got fin rot due to the low pH as a result of this product. I buffered my water with baking soda, bringing the pH back up to 7.6, but that only lasted a couple hours until it dropped back down. It's not an entirely bad product as long as you're using it purely for the purpose of dechlorinating tap water. If you're skeptical of this product due to the effect it has on the pH, I would go look at Seachem Prime. My nitrates were at 20ppm, everything else was 0.... Dosed the tank at 5 pm.... Everything still alive at 2 am.... Everything DEAD at 7:30 am! The company says everything died suddenly due to the level of nitrates. I find it strange that everything was living with it just fine until I used this product.... 37 gallon reef aquarium costing thousands GONE!Thursday, March 27, 2014
Jardin Aquarium Fish Tank Biochemical Sponge Filter, 4-1/2-Inch
Likes:
Functional
-clean water
-healthy pets
Dislikes:
Not as efficient as other sponge filters
Bottom Line:
For top efficiency in a sponge filter (if this is, of course, the type of filer you want; other filter options are always on the table) I would probably choose a different brand. For the price, it is hard to complain. It is solidly built. It has enough weight to stay in place. yes it is large, but I like that about it. I bought a couple of these. I have used them in 10-55 gal tanks. In the smaller tank they are used with my fry so they have a place to hid and so they don't get sucked into the filter. I would have given 5 stars if the was a way to add an airstone to better aerate the bubbles. If you have a small tank and no top you may get some water mist splashing out. If you have a lid no problems. I'll buy again. Don't clean under tap water though. Nothing that will harm the filter, but the chlorinated water will kill the helpful bacteria that form in the sponge media. Clean the filter out in a bucket of tank water when you do a water change.

I had one of these running in my sump for a couple months. When it was time to set up a nursery tank for the fry, I just moved the sponge to the new tank, and the tank was instantly cycled. They're also great with battery operated air pumps during power outages.Read Best Reviews of Jardin Aquarium Fish Tank Biochemical Sponge Filter, 4-1/2-Inch Here
The price was right and still working great, it is easy to clean and I would buy again. The only issue is not sure how you would put an airstone on this product to make smaller bubbles for less agitation, but I can work with it.Want Jardin Aquarium Fish Tank Biochemical Sponge Filter, 4-1/2-Inch Discount?
I'm using one of these in a 55 gallon tank as a prefilter on a canister filter. Like another review has said, it does not seem to be quite as well-built as the Filter-Max pre-filters, but it's good enough. There is a large round weight on the bottom that helps to keep it in place in the tank.
Pay attention to the size: This is big enough to completely fill one corner of a 20 gallon tank. If your fish are already a little cramped, get a smaller filter.

I ordered this with Exotic Environments Red Sea Hide-Away Aquarium Ornament and a keyboard. Both fish decor boxes mutilated, red sea decor cracked in half, while the outer box and keyboard box in perfect condition. Did the packer not notice? Or just not care?
This is pretty decent in my 10 gallon, however the paint job looks rushed on it. The clam specifically looks pretty bad, like a child painted it. For the price it's nothing I'm to surprised about. I personally won't order from Amazon Blue Ribbon pet products again, but this is nice and cheap if your willing to take the risk of their product quality control and poor packaging.

I was expecting the colors on that which should be bright, but it is not. My tank setup is very bright, has yellow gravels and orange-white plants. The background is bright green. This seems very dull infront of them. If the colors were what shown in the picture, it would have enhances the look of my tank.
It is still not bad, thats why I have rated 3-star + 1-star for Delivery ON-TIME.. Thumbs up for Amazon...

New Life Spectrum Thera A 300g
Ended up having to return this since they sent the wrong size.is a very good product, meets all my expectations and exceeds them inclsuo, really highly recommended, my fish will love and most importantly does not alter my parameters
Buy New Life Spectrum Thera A 300g Now
This is currently the best dry fish food for general marine reef aquarium use. The .5mm Small Fish Thera+A pellets apply here as well big fish may have a problem with these two smallest size pellets, but tangs do quite well with both smallest sizes. Anemones and many corals love it as well. Some fish really go for this food rabidly right from the get-go while some have to get used to pellets, but they do.I have used Thera+A for about 5 years now, and as my staple food for the last two years since Vibragrow small marine pellets went out of production. Thera+A does wonders for color almost as well as Vibragrow, naturally and helpfully for best fish health as well not just for good healthy color. Thera+A is better in some ways than Vibragrow was, but not quite as good in other ways. Thera+A is still currently king of dry fish foods rest assured.
Some dry fish foods really should not be used as a staple food and will not maintain top health like this one does. Thera+A has not only the wide variety but also the proper variety for maximizing fish health. Thera+A also has garlic which does seem to make some difference as well, in my opinion and in the opinions of many other marine reef hobbyists as well. I used to make my own frozen food mix with very similar variety, and sell it locally too, which also had Selcon ingredients in it as well. It was tops for taste (according to many, many fish) and for variety and health too, but was not so convenient to make or even to feed, and not quite as good on the color enhancement for the fish. The pellet form of Thera+A also locks in the vitamins (and other nutrients), until the fish can eat it, better than flake or frozen foods do.
Some hard to keep fish do at least somewhat better when fed this food, such as the Mandarin Goby which may ignore other foods or just not get the food value from other foods which they must normally must get from live foods (like copepods which grow naturally right in well kept reef aquariums) to give them the specialized nutrition they need to survive and thrive in captivity.

Deep Blue Sea & Midnight Sea DBBG - 24 in. - Sold by ft.
I ordered 4 feet of this 24" tall background and what I received was 4 separate 30" long pieces crushed up in a box that was about 5 times too large for the item. (background was bent and crushed to put in the box and then bounced around during shipping...)

We thought this was a great product when we received it and put it on our tank. Now 3 months later...it is peeling off all over and has pockets of air bubbles in spots in the middle of it...how did it get in there?! It will not re-stick for some reason either. I guess we will have to take it off and toss it. What a waste!Read Best Reviews of Deep Blue Sea & Midnight Sea DBBG - 24 in. - Sold by ft. Here
This was a bit taller than my tank, so I made sure to put the darkest blue section starting at the bottom and used a razor to trip the top excess off. I didn't want the background to be too brightly exposed. I used simple double-side tape all along the parameter of the back side of the tank to apply this with no ripples. Make sure to clean the glass well or otherwise dirt/prints will show up once the background is applied.Want Deep Blue Sea & Midnight Sea DBBG - 24 in. - Sold by ft. Discount?
Great product! i had read the reviews and was worried it would come in 4 sections because of the odd ordering process but it didnt. it came in a 4 foot piece rolled up neatly. i read other reviews 1st and saw how to order otherwise i wouldnt have understood. when you order 1 item, it is only 299 for 1 foot. so you just up your 'items' to 4. (for a 55 gal tank for example). Thanks! :)Monday, February 17, 2014
Hydro-Sponge Filter I--HS910 - Aquarium Technology, Inc.
Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge I is intended for aquariums up to 10 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement in the tank.
It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?
Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.
In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well. This review is for the Hydro I specifically, but it applies to all of the Hydro Sponge Filters.
The Hydro I Sponge Filter is the best for smaller tanks (5 or 10 gallons), just as its counterparts (the Hydro II, III etc.) are great for their respective size tanks. Other types of sponge filters exist on the market, but the Hydro ones are the most efficient because you can put an airstone down the shaft of the filter to get the water going through the majority of the sponge's surface. In addition, the sponge sucks up a surprising amount of debris and waste so it is good for a certain amount of mechanical filtration as well. As other reviewers explained, about once a month you simply squeeze the sponge "clean" in the tank water sitting in your bucket during the water change in order to ensure that you don't kill the bacteria by using chlorinated tap water. The water generally becomes dark brown or black, and you get a sense that you have really cleaned the tank well. (For the more squeamish types, the sponge smells like healthy earth so it is completely inoffensive. You can then use this water to feed house plants some nutrients, if you want!)
Pros: I am a great proponent of the use of sponges because I have never had problems with water readings as a result of using biological filtration. Sponge filtration is much, much more than a backup for canister or hang on power filters that clean a large number of gallons per hour. Biological filtration keeps the tank clean using beneficial bacteria and aerates the tank at the same time. Using a gang valve, you can aerate a little or a lot, depending upon whether the type of specimen you are keeping likes currents or calmer water. The biological force of a sponge filter is such that you can start a new tank by lifting a cycled and seasoned sponge filter from one tank and putting it into another. If you take some seasoned gravel too, you can immediately add a tankful of fish without worrying about ammonia spikes etc. Most importantly, I love sponge filters because when you are medicating your tank and have to remove the carbon from your filters for the antibiotics or drugs to be effective the biological filters continue to keep the denizens of your tank alive during this potentially disastrous time in your tank's life (eliminating parasites or diseases can last for up to two weeks). These Hydro sponges are soft, so amphibians or sensitive fish do not get roughed up when they brush against the sponge. If you clean your sponges regularly (once a month minimum), you will only need to replace the sponge if it loses its shape and no longer fits around the plastic rod. If you neglect cleaning, I would imagine that the sponge might get so gummed up with debris that it would no longer be absorbent and you would need to replace the sponge at that point.
Cons: The only disadvantage is the way they look--sort of like tiny little nuclear power plants in your tank--so you strive to find ways to hide them behind rocks, decorations, or large aquatic plants (or be creative and incorporate them into the decor by, say, having a theme like "post apocalypse" or "industrial age"!) Granted, I have tended to use a larger sized sponge than is recommended by the manufacturer, as I do not think it is possible to overuse sponges since the beneficial bacteria reproduce according to the amount they are fed. However, even if you get the proper sized sponge for the tank, they are difficult to conceal.
Overall, given the pros and cons, I love my amphibians and fish more than the look of their tank, so I avidly use sponge filters to keep them alive and happy. I like Hydro the best because of the possibility of using an air stone and because I like the softness of the sponge.
Buy Hydro-Sponge Filter I--HS910 - Aquarium Technology, Inc. Now
I bought this sponge filter for my angelfish, who were suddenly spawning every week. The babies were not able to survive if I left the regular filter on. I ended up having to move them to a ten gallon tank, and thus the need for this filter.I have to say, I've never had a better filter. You attach an aerator line to the inside, and that's the only thing you need. The air bubbles oxygenate the water while they also work to draw water through the sponge. All the muck that usually accumulates pretty quickly in my tank was drawn in, and the sponge works to break it all down naturally, which is actually healthier for my fish and plants. And no babies were harmed by this little device. it's gentle, but effective.
And the best part is that you do not have to buy filters! Just rinse and squeeze the sponge under room-temp water for a moment and you're done. I'm definitely going to replace my old money-devouring filters in my 55 gallon tank with some like this. These are well worth buying, and actually pretty cheep considering it all. I advise anyone thinking of getting one of these to make the leap. You won't be sorry.

I bought this for my Axolotl tank as I needed a sponge filter so they couldn't get their little fingers or gills stuck in the filter uptake. I was very happy to find one at such a great price and with such great reviews so ordered it immediately. Upon arrival I discovered just how huge this monster is! I should have read the dimensions listed (though would have gotten it anyway) so I would not have been shocked by the size. A 4 1/2 in diameter takes up a huge amount of space in a 10 gallon tank (they are like what, 18 by 12?). Just a heads up for people looking at this product. Even with the huge size, this product seems to be working good and I have no complaints with it. I actually find the bubbling sound of the top quite soothing. :)Want Hydro-Sponge Filter I--HS910 - Aquarium Technology, Inc. Discount?
