Want Bio-Sponge® Filter Media for Cascade® Canister Filter Pumps, single-pack Discount?

Just an FYI, each package only contains 1 sponge (filter floss comes in a 6 pack). . . This perfectly fits the trays inside the cascade 1200 and 1500 canister filters. The sponge is quite coarse and will catch the biggest debris particles. However you'll want a tray or two loaded with filter floss to polish the water.

As for maintenance of the bio-sponge, there's really no reason to replace this product any sooner than once a year. To clean it: pour the old canister water into a bucket, then take and wring out this "biosponge" in there. Wash it off using the old aquarium water and once it's fairly clean, put the sponge right back into the filter. Don't use city tap water to wash this because the chlorine will kill the beneficial denitrifying bacteria.

I say 5 stars out of 5 because it perfectly fits the filter tray, the price isn't outrageous, and it will last a really long time.

Bubble-Wall® Air Diffusers for Aquariums

Penn Plax Bubble Wall Air Diffuser, 28-InchIts simple, cheap and looks great.

Word of advise, if you're going to cover it with gravel, make sure its properly stuck to the bottom or side glass. Otherwise it will get loose and it floats, so youll be digging gravel trying to get it reattached.

My Oscar's loved playing in the bubbles but since they are aggressive and large they kept pulling the tube out or the stone off the wall so I had to take it out of the tank. While it was in the tank it looked did good and they seemed to love swimming in the bubbles. So I give it a good rating because I think my problems where due to the Oscars size and aggression.

Buy Bubble-Wall® Air Diffusers for Aquariums Now

These reviewers are not very bright. The Bubble Wall is the best of 4 different types I bought. The bubbles are fine and the whole 18" (two joined parts) bubble uniformly.

To avoid large bubbles one must place the suction cups on the end fittings (NOT on the actual bubble material. And joining the two pieces is easy if one takes a nail file and gently bevels the end.

I installed four of these with NONE of the issues other complainers wrote about.

I bought the bubble wall for a great price and the delivery came on time with free super saver shipping by USPS. There is two rods made of a hard board like material (where the bubbles come out of) and a connector. I had a hard time keeping the ends connected together. Its almost like they don't fit in the connector and that's why I took a star away. It's holding together now, but barely, because if I push in too hard it might break. Other than that it looks great in my tank and my fish love swimming through the bubbles. It's a good deal worth buying.

WOW lots of bubbles of air for my fish! Good product but very fragile so be careful connecting the ends..

Impeller Assembly for Emperor 400

Impeller Assembly for Emperor 400Unit arrived as promised. Will definitely order again in the future if needed. Replaced the old impeller in the Emperor 400. Fishes are happy.

It is exactly what it says. I bought a used Emperor 400 filter and the old impeller was bent which made the filter extremely loud. This one fit perfectly and has made the tank far more enjoyable for my ears and also for my fish who are now getting proper filtration.

I picked this up for my emperor 400 because the impeller it came with was oddly molded and made a horrible rattling noise. This one fit in nicely and did its job. still made some noise but it wasn't as bad.

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 36-Inch

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 36-InchI was somewhat skeptical that a 20 something watt led fixture could give me the light I needed for my plants in my 58 gallon aquarium traditionally a high tec planted tank with co2, ferts, and over 200 watts of hqi, pc, or florescent light (each with their own set of problems). It is considerably less bright than those 200+ watt solutions, but surprisingly the plants are thriving under it. I have cut back on ferts and growth is not insane as it once was it is good growth with healthy plants and so far no algea issues. It has been on the tank for 2 months. My tank has never looked better.

i had ordered 2 strips to span a 72" aquarium. i was skepitical over the quality when one of the strips arrived and only 1/2 of the lights actually lit. the other strip worked perfectly. a quick re-order and return to amazon (yeah amazon) of the defective strip and worries calmed. the product is of compact size but good volume of light and an economical price! i do recommend this product highly.

Buy Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 36-Inch Now

I purchased the fixture for a 40 gallon breeder planted community tank. Physically is has a slim low profile design that takes up little room above the tank. It seems to well built and I have had no trouble with it after more than a month of use. Seems plenty bright for my needs(maybe a bit too much light) . The only downside seems to be that if you nee to raise it up to reduce intensity there isn't any built in clips or attachment points for hanging it. So if you wish to hang it you'll have to take it apart and drill holes in the casing to mount eye bolts. Otherwise an excellent fixture for the price.

Lots of light for such a slim light. Cord is longer than before. Easy to assemble and comes with set screws to secure positively to tank. Went from a dual T5HO to this and much more light. Plants still adjusting to new light levels and color. Update changed tanks and started new with this light. Plants grow really fast when coupled with CO2 injection.

Want Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 36-Inch Discount?

I was a little hesistant on ordering this due to how new LED technology is and I couldn't find a lot of information on if it would be good for plants or not. I am pleased to say that this unit far exceeded my expectations. It produces a pleasant light and does not generate a lot of heat. You can feel a slight warmth on the Heatsink that is intigrated into the back. Now on to the set up. This unit is much cheaper that the marineland units I was also interested in.

I have this unit on a 50 Gallon SeaClear. The legs no not quite make it all the way to the edges to clamp down but that is not a big deal. I have a variety of plants includin Java Fern, Several types of swords from Kleiner bar swords to Ozelot Swords and Micro swords. I also have some Dwarf sag and Angustifolia. All these plants have explodes so far. The Angustfolia is really out of control and the Java Fern is throwing out tons of roots from the leaves for additional plants. The only supplementation I have been using is Flourish Excel and even then I have dialed back on this due to the rapid growth.

I am only running this light about 8 hours dialed back from an additional 12. I do run a marineland Hidden Blue LED about an additional 4 hours but that is just for looks really. I am also using Carribsea Eco Complete planted substrate mixed with some of the tahitian moon.

To sumarize this unit is well worth the money and has exceeded my expectations. If i had to improve on it I wouldn't mind having a Night mode for the unit with the addition of a few more LED's. I would also want seperate cord/power supplies to that you could utilize these LED's seperate from the normal daylight ones.

Marineland PA0115 HOT Magnum Rite-Size Foam Sleeve, 1-Pack

Marineland PA0115 HOT Magnum Rite-Size Foam Sleeve, 1-PackYep, it's the right size alright. Same as what came in the box with my H.O.T. Magnum aquarium filter. (That one lasted over 10 years, so I didn't think I'd need to purchase the 3-pack of these...)

Necessary as a pre-filter to keep the 'Micron' cartridge or media basket from becoming clogged too quickly. Very durable. Rinses clean and goes right back to work.

Hagen Marina Betta Aquarium Starter Kit, Sun Swirl

Hagen Marina Betta Aquarium Starter Kit, Sun SwirlI used this product for a time for my Betta Fish, Sun Tzu. HE liked the tank, it was bigger than the cup I bought him in, and he was making beautiful bubble nests (meaning he was looking to breed, and he was secure in raising his fry in the tank.) However, I do not breed my Betta, but it was good to know he was feeling so confident in only a half gallon of water. I wall mounted it to protect him from the cats, and bought the LED light (sold separately) and that was pretty cool. First I bought a plastic plant to go with, then I moved to a live plant because I heard they improve water quality. Then I researched and realized he needed tropical water, so I bought a thermometer. I saw his water temp. was fluctuating between night and day (duh), and I was worried the temperature flux was putting to much stress on his tiny fishy body. I was also getting very tired of needing to do water changes every four days. SO... I ditched this tank and bought a 10 gallon tank complete with lighted hood, and power filter for less than what I payed for this tank (full price at the local national pet store chain). I put in a thermostat heater and some full spectrum lights (for growing aquarium plants) and bada-bing bada-boom, I have a beautiful planted tank, the center piece to my apartment, a VERY happy Betta fish with plenty of room to stretch his pretty little fins, plenty of places for him to hide if he wishes, and a tank that requires significantly LESS maintenance than this half gallon. That's just the up and down of it. I still keep this tank around for a back up, in case something needs quarantining, or if the Zombie Apocalypse happens and I need to take him and run. (I had a dream the apartment was on fire, and I used this to rescue him. Not a bad idea! ;D)

IN CONCLUSION: This tank is not cruelty. My fish was lively and making bubble nests when he lived there for three months, but in all honesty, a non-filtered tank requires WAY more maintenance, and if you slack off, you could end up seriously hurting or killing your fish. Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites, all things you need to be wary of, and it's so much easier to just get a proper tank, something with a thermostat heater and a filter. Betta need water between 75 and 80 degrees to live comfortably. They are tropical fish.

WALL MOUNTING: Yes, you can screw it to your wall, but then the tank part is removable from the wall mount, making for easy water changes. You do not have to unscrew and remove the whole thing from the wall to change the water. You simply lift the tank off of it's wall mount/stand, do your do, and place it back. SUPER SUPER easy! Props for that, it's the best wall mounted tank money can buy. If you're cool with the constant water changes, then go for it.

Betta need at least 2.5 gallons and either need daily or every other day water changes without a filter (really just simpler to get a filter for the tank), and a water temperature between 70 and 80 degrees (so most need a heater). This tank doesn't really allow any of these requirements. Another reviewer said it wasn't cruelty and her betta was happy I sincerely disagree. Her fish may have been happier than it was, but that's because it has only been in breeding tanks (basically the size of this tank) and the cup you get him in from the store. He's happier than he was, but that isn't saying much, and he still won't be very happy in this setup. This allows for next to no decorations, which betta like since they provide hiding places and places to explore. The only thing I'd put in one of these is a marimo moss ball. It isn't worth the money, just look into a better tank setup so your betta can really be happy.

Hagen Nutrafin Max Color Pellets, 3-Ounce

Hagen Nutrafin Max Color Pellets, 3-OunceFirst of all one needs to know that the goldfish was created by the ancient chinese out of the koi. Just like there are lots of dog varieties there are lots of koi thanks to hummans. The goldfish is one of those koi. Just with a different name. The point of this is that if you buy this your koi is going to eat it and like it just as much as if it was a goldfish. The main benefit to this over flakes is that they float better and dont get caught in fliters as much. The fish can eat them better and this helps keep your tank or pond cleaner. My koi "nikko" both enjoys these pellets and eats them all preventing too much of a mess for me.

EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge Extractor

EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge ExtractorHi,

I beat up reviews of gravel vacs for almost a week. Look, this thing cost three times the normal 2 c-batt vacs. Just buy it. The thing is awesome. The upper area you see in grey-white is 6 inches of micro mesh plastic to fill up with garbage. You just press 2 buttons to detatch it and go rinse in out. The whole thing is submergable. Also the "On" button locks in. So you don't have to hold it. I didn't give it a 5 because I feel they could have added a cross under the impeller to not allow very small stones to get up in there. I had one lodge which made me have to disconnect the section and dump it out. No biggie. Just being picky since this is a review. Uses 4 AA included (Duracell) wow. Has great suction. I press the lower section all the way in the stone and it actually sucks down to the bottom of the tank. I would have rated this 4.8.

I have a 90 gallon tank and sometimes I don't want to perform a water change to get the bottom of the tank clean. I had the multi-vac previously. I have no issues with that except over time, the pieces won't stay together. I bought the sludge extractor (PETCO) and I love it. It reaches to the bottom of my tank and I didn't have to drain any water. The pressure on the vacuum was more than adequate. I was a bit relunctant on the proce, but I'm happy I did buy it and would recommend it to others. Just shop around for the lowest price.

Buy EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge Extractor Now

This was the second vacuum I purchased and I hope that by reading my review you will make this your first. There aren't a million electronic vacuums on the market but almost all of them cost less than this one. That makes them VERY tempting. However, there are many things that make this worth the money:

Plastic mesh filter: The cheaper ones exit into a cheap cloth bag that keeps coming loose.

Suction: This thing has GREAT suction. You can see all of the debris getting pulled up.

Easy to clean: Take off the filter and rinse it under the faucet.

Quality: This FEELS solid. The other vacuums feel cheap like they will break at any moment.

Works on larger tanks: It comes with an extension that you can use if you have a mid sized tank.

Just wanted to share a tip. It doesn't look like it, but you can remove the cap at the bottom of the mesh filter to make it easier to wash out all of the debris sucked up by the vacuum.

This is a great tool if you want to clean up a bit between water changes, or if you want to clean up during a water change but don't want to take out too much water. Highly recommend.

I just got the Sludge extractor yesterday, and immediately rip the box open and tried it out. The product comes in a few pieces and nothing was crack or broken as other reviewers has experienced. They even included batteries for the extractor. Assembly was very easy, and a push of a button gets the little pump going. I would say that the sucting power is about the same as my gravel siphon, definately not stronger and no way would it be able to suck a fish up. (I have some neon tetras in the tank) The fine screen traps the "eek" and let the water flows out. It was easy to use and easy to clean. Although for some reason, the pump would stop on it's own for no reason at all. I have no problem with the battery cover, it seems secure enough and it never pop open on it's own. This product can be improved by having stronger suction power. Otherwise, it perform as what I expected from the product description.

Aquarius Aq35000gpc Glofish 180 3-1/2-Gallon Aquarium Kit

Aquarius Aq35000gpc Glofish 180 3-1/2-Gallon Aquarium KitThe filter they have installed with it is just too strong for some types of fish. The filter is probably also used on one of their larger tanks and they just decided to match it up with this smaller tank. If you have really strong swimmers, it might be fine. I have a beautiful male betta in his prime and you could tell he was really getting a workout in there. I suspect it would eventually wear him out, or at the very least, cause undue stress leading to an early demise. Therefore, I decided to put the 'tom mini filter' (here on amazon also) and it seems to be about perfect! Love the led's and curved surfacefits nicely on my desk.

The "one inch per gallon" is too broad of a statement. It will be okay to keep 4-5 Glofish in this tank if you know what you're doing, and you go slow. testing water all the way and cleaning often. The one-inch-per-gallon rule doesn't take into account body mass, amount of waste that species of fish produces, dimensions of the tank (depth isn't as helpful as length when it comes to oxygen exchange), etc.

I had Glofish in here, and they looked great, but then I found a gorgeous orange betta fish so I transferred my glofish to another tank I have and put the betta here. I have never had a betta fish that was so active, adventurous, and seemingly happy. I would encourage this tank for betta fish even more than glofish. (PS: See pictures of my fish under customer images right under the main picture up top).

We bought this tank for our son's room for just a few goldfish. The led lights are really pretty! Great ambience. Being able to switch between black light, led and a combo is quite cool. Even though we don't have glo in the dark fish, the materials in the tank are illuminated~ we got inexpensive glo in the dark plastic plants and white marbles which are affected by the light. It's the ultimate night light!!!

Besides the lights in the tank, the filter seems quite good! We are a busy/lazy tank cleaning family and this tank keeps itself really clean compaired to our daughter's similar sized tank which is constantly needing cleaning.

Very happy!

While the tank looks nice and is a "deal" to get a filter, light and tank together it is CHEAP. The tank WILL crack if you try to move it, the light does not fill the tank evenly. Instead you get more of a led spot light effect which is not conducive to viewing. The light went out today and I haven't had it a month yet. My advice is get a glass take and the parts separate. I wasted my money on this one big time.

I thought this was a good value, but now the filter has broken after only having the set for about 3 weeks. When it was running it was too strong for the small tank. The lights mostly just light up the middle of the tank. I wish I had gotten a 10 gal glass tank instead.

Oceanic 36015 BioCube HQI Aquarium, 29-Gallon

Oceanic 36015 BioCube HQI Aquarium, 29-GallonI have had this since May 2012 and use it as a Saltwater, Fish only tank and it has really been hard to maintain. I have to wipe it down every day because salt accumulates all over it, especially at the seams and you can forget keeping the glass cover clean. I have already had to replace the protein skimmer. The original one didn't stop working it just didn't work well enough. In fairness, this may be easier to maintain as a freshwater tank, but I regret the purchase and wish I had just gotten a larger tank that would hold more than 3 or 4 fish to make the maintenance work while. Probably could maintain a 55 gal. at the same cost with the same or even less maintenance. I have to use additional fans to keep the temperature at an acceptable level, the light emits a lot of heat even with the fans it holds. With this size tank the temperature fluctuates at the least change in environmental temperature, even small temporary change.

I have had my hqi for a month now, and i am very impressed how easy it is to keep corals and fish. I would recommend a couple power heads for it though

I would definitely not recommend these check valves. I was looking for one to use in my CO2 injection system for my fishtank. The only options were $15 for a brass one or about $3 for two plastic ones, so I decided to try the cheap ones. After just the first night there was a fair amount of water that made it past the valve. They may work well for applications when there is gas (whether it be CO2 or just air from an air pump) going through the valve at all times, but if there will be times when there isn't, then I would look for something of better quality.

I gave it two stars because it IS cheap, so I sort of should have expected the outcome.

Marina Style Deluxe Aquarium Kit

Marina Style 20 Deluxe Glass Aquarium Kit - 20 GallonsWe bought this as a first aquarium for our household. All of the parts included have worked great, and the instruction book has been really helpful, from the set-up to the adding of fish. The bottle of starter is only enough to treat the aquarium once though, so you might want to order a second bottle (the stuff that adds the beneficial bacteria) for water changes.

There is no heater included either, so if you want to do anything other than goldfish you'll need to buy one. They aren't very expensive, so it's not a big deal, but I wish I had realized that before.

Like other reviewers have stated my tank arrive completely shattered. One entire side of the tank glass was in tiny pieces. As others said the box was packed in a box much bigger and just a tiny bit of brown paper so I suspect it has rattled around quite a bit. When the package arrived I immediately requested a replacement online. This was a very easy process and took just a few minutes. The next day UPS arrived with a new tank and picked up the broken one (I am a Prime customer so I don't know if this is the case with non-prime members). Though this tank was packaged the exact same way it was completely intact. It was a bit frustrating to have to change the tanks out but it only set me back one day and about 5 minutes so I can't complain too much.

I really like the tank. I completely admit I know very little about fish tanks or fish in general. We have my daughter's 2 goldfish living in the tank (they were in a 3 gallon tank previously so they got quite an upgrade to 20 gallons) and do very little other than feeding and changing water. The filter seems to work fine for us, keeping the water nice and clean. We used the bacterial agent that came with the tank and have purchased more as it does seem to help keep the water clear. The instruction guide was nice to have because I knew nothing about fish and would have just set up the tank and thrown the fish in. Hopefully I have limited their suffering by learning a bit more about their care from this guide.

The packaging on this item was horrible. It was shipped with absolutely no protection, not even packing paper. That's right ... just a glass aquarium (or what was left of it), with all the accessories thrown inside, in a box. No wonder it arrived shattered. I understand there is a risk when ordering breakable items online, but this was just careless. It was also dangerous to my children, who (excited about their new fish pet) were opening the package with me, until tiny glass shards started raining down and I had to shoo them away. This experience was a great reminder that some things are best purchased locally.

Read Best Reviews of Marina Style Deluxe Aquarium Kit Here

I didn't rate this at 5 Stars because the box was really beat up that the actual aquarium was in. My aquarium didn't arrive shattered. I have it up and running right now and am really love it. The motor on the filter is super quiet and I had to look to see if it was even working. I love that there is a protective coating on the switch to turn the light on. The only thing I didn't like was that the aquarium glasses are not perfectly put together. I was scared about this until I looked online and saw that there is some shifting after the pieces of glass are glued together. I will update this if I have anything else to say. I have yet to add my plants, fish and shrimp. I am doing a bit of fishless cycling but the book says that I don't have to because it comes with beneficial bacteria. The book that it comes with is AMAZINGLY BENEFICIAL! This is a perfect starter aquarium because it comes with everything! I was worried about it arriving shattered and ordering online and it arrived fine. Will update with some pics after I get it all set up.

Update: Returning the product and don't recommend purchasing it. The lightbulb smells like it's burning the plastic. The filter doesn't do a great job because my aquarium is still cloudy from when I put the substrate in and it's now day 4. It seems that the non-perfect walls that I talked before shifted somewhat. I immediately emptied it because I thought it was going to start leaking. I'm returning it and I don't even know if it will make it back to Amazon in one piece since the packaging is horrible. I'm very unhappy with this product and don't advise others to make the same mistake of purchasing it. From pictures it looks great and it really does have the ability to be great. Packaging and cheap quality products are what make it junk.

Penn-plax Bubbler Bottom Filter

Penn-plax Bubbler Bottom FilterBasically, i started this out for guppies. they didn't survive and now i have quite a few more. Swordtails being my favorite here. the filter is simple, but is a hassle for the activated filter carbon. the small particles get throught the bottom and then, the air is pushed through, potientially pushing out the small particles into the tank. i thought it was dangerous for the fish so i got a sifter for the smaller particles. it takes me an hour and a half all together to get this done. the airtube is pretty tight on, but it gets slimy. the trapping isn't amazing, but decent so make sure you have a cleaning fish for the leftovers.

I have been keeping fish for 30+ years and have air driven filters from Penplax and Lee. Power filters and canisters have their place and I use them. But there is still room for the old school air driven filter.

Air driven filters are often under estimated. I gave them 4 stars because they work well. I did not give them 5 stars because they take a bit of time to clean. These $3 filters will filter as well as a power filter if you have similar media in both. You always have to correctly size the filter to the tank.

How well they work and what they do depends on what you pack them with. I would always use filter floss as the top media. Anything that gets loose, like bits of charcoal, would be trapped by the floss.

It is a good idea to use 2 filters and alternate cleaning/changing them. This ensures that the bio filtration is maintained.

Agreed that charcoal is not needed for everyday use.

Marineland Eclipse Seamless Integrated Aquarium System, 5 Gallons, Corner

Marineland Eclipse Seamless Integrated Aquarium System, 5 Gallons, CornerI have owned this aquarium for 3 years now. It looks great sitting on my kitchen counter. I could have been more consistent about cleaning the system (about 1x a month), but generally speaking the fish have thrived. Several mistakes I made include: 1) thinking that the bio-wheel needs to be occasionally replaced (don't go there) 2) leaving the light on too much which created an algae bloom, and 3) buying fish that outgrow this small aquarium. I made those mistakes in the first year. Since then it has been smooth sailing except for the light fixture burning out. The light switch is pretty cheap, so repeated use caused it to break. I rigged up another lighting system since I was not able to order a replacement part except for the whole lid unit (which costs as much as the aquarium), but it is not very satisfactory. I am breaking down and buying another aquarium just to get a functioning light. This time I am going to hook up the light to a timer and avoid overusing the switch.

This tank was purchased as an upgrade for my betta. I decided to send this tank set back almost immediately because I found the quality and design of the tank to be pretty disappointing...especially coming form Marineland. First off, the acrylic tank body scratches incredibly easily, especially compared to my other acrylic set by a different manufacturer. Even the foam packing material didn't appear to protect it well. The top and bottom of the tank were both lined with obvious scratches right out of the box! The filter that came with the set is made of flimsy plastic and doesn't sit well in the compartment designated for it. Nearly every time I opened the lid, the filtration system popped up because the cords got stuck in the hinge. The cords from the filter and light have to fit through a really narrow opening near the hinge of the tank. The tank comes with a clip to hold these, but it really doesn't help much. To add a heater, you must carefully thread the cord through a small hole on the opposite side of the lid and drop the heater through a narrow opening in the plastic that supports the filtration system, which is a real pain should you need to adjust the temperature or remove the filter for any reason. As for the lid, I don't understand why they didn't include a little feeding door like many other systems do. It is a hassle to open the entire top (especially if you are limited on space above or behind the tank) just to dump in some flakes. I did like the tank's aesthetics and corner shape when it arrived, and the quality of lightbulb included, but thats about it honestly. In my opinion, there are better tank sets to choose from...particularly if you are shopping for a Betta.

This is by far the best aquarium kit i've used so far. Ive had it for around 1 month already. The filter and bio wheel do the job with keeping the water clear and ammonia levels close to non-existant, respectively. Fish seem very happy and healthy. I was so pleased with this tank, i bought another one!

I've had this tank for 6 months now, and it's on the kitchen counter (in a corner) with 5 male guppies in it (one inch of fish per gallon) and have a couple of plants also. I set it up quickly and easily, and haven't had any problems with scratches. The light is bright enough to keep the 2 plants healthy as long as I planted them directly under the light which is near the front of the tank. The bio wheel is perfect-just don't rinse it, replace it, or let it dry out-ever. I thoroughly rinse the carbon filter every Saturday with tap water and replace it every month. 1/2 gallon water change every Sat. too (via a tank vacuum to churn up the rocks a bit-while avoiding plant roots). It's a 20 min. job.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lid isn't well designed for a kitchen counter with overhead cabinets. I wish the lid was a hinged 2 piece! I can't open it fully on the kitchen counter-even when I pull the whole tank to the counter's edge. (Or, at least they should put an adjustable prop up stick in it. So, I have to unplug everything and take the whole lid off-which is a bit tricky in the kitchen and annoying. They could have put more effort into cord management, too. The cords get pinched in the lid if you don't carefully guide them thru the small holes. My 5 gal dream tank would have those retractable cord roller-upper things in the lid.

But, it looks nice, and the fish & plants are happy.

I have owned this tank for three years now. I originally purchased this tank based on my experience with several of the large Marineland tanks which were phenomenal. The 5-gal system is nice when working, the bio-wheel is unbeatable when it comes to keeping the water conditioned. My three most recurring annoyances which will prevent me from purchasing this same tank to replace mine which has died now:

1) The ballast on the light overheats and melts the plastic casing causing a bad smell and concern re: shorting. Marineland replaced once as a defective part, but the replacement had the same problem, and could not be replaced again because of warranty limitations.

2) The acrylic tank is packed into its box without protections, which means it comes out of the box scuffed up, which can never be fixed.

3) As other reviews have pointed out, the lack of a feeding lid is VERY annoying. There is a hinged access lid, but it opens up to the filer, not the water surface.

Sad that Marineland ditched its usual quality on this system.

Hagen A1587 40-Watt Aqua-Glo Fluorescent Bulb, 48-Inch

Hagen A1587 40-Watt Aqua-Glo Fluorescent Bulb, 48-InchThis bulb literally saved the life of my plants. I added some plants to my tank but they quickly died and laid dormant until I replaced my florescent light and then within a few days, the bulbs were sprouting new growth and roots like never before. The color of the light's glow is very pretty and slightly blue-tinted. I am pleased with the Aqua-glo light and will likely buy another in the future.

Nice color in my 125 aquarium. I want to switch to T5 for my planted tank, but until then these will do.

Tap Water Filter

Tap Water FilterConceptually this is a good method of transforming hard water into "soft" water via an ion exchange resin located inside the column. Unfortunately, hard water (which exists where water is pulled from the ground, typically) reduces the usability to about 10 gallons of water. Further, the columns are difficult to swap out without producing periodic leaks, they are awkward to store when not in use and they cannot be regenerated at home necessitating the purchase of new columns very frequently.

It does not provide value for the cost.

So I have off the scale, hard municipal water... and this filter actually does a pretty good job on it. It produces water completely free of contaminates, chlorine, etc (using api test kit ofc), and does so at 10 gph with no runoff more efficient than most home RO machines, especially at the price. It's also extremely simple to hook up and use.

The problem is, I too only got an estimated 30-40 gallons out of the canister, which is well short of the advertised average of 50-150 gallons.

My tank is an open design 55 gallon, and I lose close to 5 gallons a week to evaporation. So I did some math.

40 gallons produced (1 canister) / 5 gallons per week = roughly 8 weeks of use, for $22 plus shipping

40 gallons x .50 cents at the RO machine down the street = $20 (minus hauling all that water up 2 flights op stairs every other week)

After a close race, the machine loses by a narrow margin. But only because the canisters cost too much. If they were to drop the price a bit, I might pick some up for the convenience alone. As for now, I'll pretend to be content lugging water cans around all the time. Guess it's good exercise.

I got 10 years out of my old DI filter, running off water for many salt tanks in a way that didn't waste water the way my old RO unit did. But eventually, the fitting cracked, and I am just thrilled they are still being manufactured. Great, efficient, yes cartridges are pricey but on a decent water supply they last a while, and takes little storage space.

Used this filter a few times and it worked well until it suddenly started to cause the filtered water to smell something akin to a strong chemical cat urine odor. I had added some water to a fish tank and the tank smelled rank. As a result, I had to change out the tank and add clean unfiltered water. I think the fish are okay. I will throw the unit away as it also is causing the entire room to smell awful. Total waste of money and I hope I didn't harm the fish by using this product.

Zilla 09931 Night Black Heat Incandescent Spot Bulb, 150-Watt

Zilla 09931 Night Black Heat Incandescent Spot Bulb, 150-Watti purchased 3 bulbs becuase they are the cheapest heat lamp bulb i can find on amazon. all 3 of them last less than 2 weeks each. not worth the money!!!!!!

We use this Heat Light bulb in are heat lamp and have it hanging over are large bird cage. My Birds kept getting sick so the vet told us about a heat lamp and bulb. I got one and I have been using to for 3 months now and my birds are now healthy and happy. IT keeps the cage around 80 degrees. AT Night we drop the temp in the house to 65 degrees, the temp in the bird cage would also drop down to 65 and it was making my birds cold and causing URI. WE still keep the house at 65 degrees and the bird cage temp frops to 73 at night which is still a healthy temp for them to be at. After 1 month of using the light the birds are healthy and happy.

This bulb in conjunction with a large fixture helps us keep our 50 gal terrarium warm night and day. The black light is very nice, as our house had become a little flooded with red light at night (using regular night bulbs).

The one thing that I'm not blown away by is the bulb life, this bulb only lasted about 2000 hours.
