WaterWonders Cube Aquarium Kit - 1 1/2 Gallon

WaterWonders Cube Aquarium Kit - 1 1/2 GallonI had this tank with a betta and a gold mystery snail in it. Its very cheap and unfortunatly the LEDs arent bright at all. I will also say for the size of the tank the filter is rather large and not easy to hide behind decor without comprimising swimming room. If you are a serious fish enthusist who likes quality this isnt for you. It is cheap and it looks cheap. If its going to sit on your son/daughters desk its not a bad deal for the price. But for $5 more you can get the tetra cube 3 gallon and have WAY more room for yourr fishy friend.

Aquaclear Activated Carbon Insert, 70-Gallon Aquariums, 3-Pack

Aquaclear Activated Carbon Insert, 70-Gallon Aquariums, 3-PackI bought these filters to replenish my stock I keep. We use the Aquaclear filter for our turtle tank. The product I ordered was very will priced and was delivered fast.

Don't waste your time pricing this at a pet store for this is as cheap as it gets!! Shipping and follow up was exceptional.Very happy.

I use this carbon insert in the chemical cup of my 50 gallon Sea Clear aquarium. I will continue to use it. The three pack works for me I expect this box to last about four months. Buying the loose carbon and putting into your own bag may work for some but I cannot see dealing with the loose carbon. I just take a bag out, rinse, and insert into the chemical receptor !

This is the most important part of the overall product to keep updated. I believe the changes are suggested monthly you should really keep up with this monthly-month and a half. Otherwise you might start seeing clouding in the tank. This system is by far the best and turned a messy tank into crystal clear overnight. Works fantastic.

Marineland PC0250SSB H.O.T. Magnum Pro, up to 50-Gallon, 250GPH

Marineland PC0250SSB H.O.T. Magnum Pro, up to 50-Gallon, 250GPHThis is the best filter I have ever owned. I put it on my 20 gal tank and it is spotless. It filters by water almost 40 times every hour. It is really easy to take care of too. Just add carbon every month and that's it. Read the directions carefully. HINT: The directions are a little incomplete. When filling the filter with water, fill it till it overflows. That way you can be sure it's full. If not,you get an annoying running water sound. That brings up another positive. When it is full and you have a good seal, it is very quiet. My tank is in my bedroom and I have no trouble sleeping with the quiet motor.

I love this filter for a medium sized tank. Has carbon, biological, and particle filtering all in one relatively small, and very quiet package.

Buy Marineland PC0250SSB H.O.T. Magnum Pro, up to 50-Gallon, 250GPH Now

My previous post: "When I tried to assemble the filter the Bio-Wheel coupling did not fit over the male portion of the Outlet Adapter BW Pro Tube from the filter. The Outlet Adapter Tube was not glued correctly such that the part that is supposed to couple with the Bio-Wheel is not at right angles and therefore impossible to line up with the coupling. I wrote to the supplier for a replacement Adapter Tube. Will update."

Now the update (belated): About 10 days after I sent the e-mail with photo to Big Al's Online I received the replacement part no charge. Filter and biowheel works perfect. I will definitely buy from Big Al's Online (through Amazon.com) again. I had used this filter before but without the biowheel. Simply love it. I especially like that I can have a clean micron filter ready to replace the dirty one and have the filter back to the tank running within 10 minutes without the mess. Highly recommended. I also use a Marineland PC0350PSB Magnum 350 for my bigger tank and love it for the same reason. When maintenance is easy you will do it regularly.

Added it to my 30g tank. It went from cloudy to clear crystal within 5 hours. I would recommend to add some Fluval Ammonia Remover within the mix of carbon. VERY easy to setup. me like.

Want Marineland PC0250SSB H.O.T. Magnum Pro, up to 50-Gallon, 250GPH Discount?

I'm rating this 4 stars because it is a powerful filter and preforms well with my tank. The reason why I did not give 5 stars is because the picture was misleading on the parts that I would receive. ie: Syphoning hose & cardboard carton with added media or such were missing; with the first order and also the replacement order.

Amazon did take care of my situation; so I would recommend that you purchase from this seller.

Hagen Fluval Universal Media Filter Bag, Pack of 2

Hagen Fluval Universal Media Filter Bag, Pack of 2Really nice media bag for larger media. I'm using it in a Fluval 206. It's certainly a good deal for two bags. I got it hoping that it would work with Seachem's Purigen. No go. Don't get it for Purigen. The Purigen is too small and just flows out through the mesh.

However, it does work just great with Seachem's Phosguard.

It has nice reusable bag clips to seal the bag.

These media bags are a good size and the material seems fairly durable. The plastic closures that come with the bags are easy to use and stay securely in placeI like them much better than string ties. They are a little pricier than most other media bags but will probably last much longer.

Buy Hagen Fluval Universal Media Filter Bag, Pack of 2 Now

I have been very pleased with these reusable Hagen media bags. They are "wearing" well after 3 months and monthly refills, they seem well-stitched and durable, and hold plenty of media (truthfully, more than I need for a Fluval 205 and Aquaclear 20's). One nice feature is the clasp that holds the bag closed can be "cinched" down on the media, so you can put in as little or as much media as you like.

The only thing I'd change is making that clasp a little less large, or offering a smaller bag--it's pretty big for an Aquaclear. That's not a showstopper, though, and I'd buy these again in the future.

Looks great, very tall. Only problem is that a few strands broke off from the base fairly quickly after putting it in the tank. Each time I have pulled it out for cleaning, a long strand has detached from the base. I glued them back in with some aquarium safe glue. Do yourself a favor if you have to have this and buy a tube of aquarium glue for repairs.

Tetra LED Half Moon, Betta Kit, 1.1-Gallon

Tetra LED Half Moon, Betta Kit, 1.1-GallonI bought this for an unexpected addition (a free betta) I received when I bought my special Betta off Ebay. I placed the special one in the 8-gallon tank I prepared for it, but I had no place to put the other little guy. I was looking for cheap and small tanks for the other one to put on my desk. This one works pretty well and the ability to switch the placement of the light is nifty. The curved front of the tank is quite elegant. (I don't place as much as importance on the free Betta, but I value its life and think it should have a home better than a spare bucket I had laying around.)

Word to the wise, Bettas should be kept in at least 2.5 gallon tanks with a gentle filtration system if you value their health. If they are kept in still water 1 gallon tanks, changing their water at least twice a week is suggested because chemicals created by waste and left over food can contaminate the tank, especially in such a small area.

I bought a 1 pound bag of decorative gravel which managed to just barely cover the bottom of the tank as well as the bumps protruding from the bottom to accommodate the LED lights.

In conclusion: The title is a bit misleading because I don't think it qualifies as a "kit" because it only includes the tank itself and lights. If you want a true kit, look for ones that come with a filter, lighting, and possibly gravel and/or other accoutrements.

This tank is a great size and visually pleasant, however the led lights went out and started flickering after a few days of use. I liked that it wasn't super small...with some live plants it looks very nice.

Let me tell you some things i've learned over the years..

1. My Crowntail Betta is in a 1 gallon & hated anything bigger than that..

2. My Sons' Double Tail Betta is in a 2 gallon tank and loves the room he has..

3. My daughter has her Betta in a 3 Gallon tank and he hated the open space as well..

4. Back in the day i had a Betta that was in a 10 Gallon tank with guppies & tetras and he loved it and lived to be about 5 yrs old.

So really it depends on the fish, either they'll like the small space or they won't.. my experience has been about 50-50.

This tank is similar to my daughters' minus the light. So i'd think a Betta would be happier in this tank, with a small sponge filter & low temp heater added perhaps..

Its a cute little fish tank. There is a light that can sit on top of the tank or be slid into a pocket under the tank. Tank arrived cracked but still usable.

Want Tetra LED Half Moon, Betta Kit, 1.1-Gallon Discount?

I bought this tank at Petco for my crowntail male betta. He got nervous in larger spaces, but seemed to enjoy being in here with a tall leafy plant in one corner for hiding spots.

However there is an opening in the tank lid large enough for a betta to jump through. I noticed this from the beginning and tried to block it off with leaves just below the water. This worked for five months; he paid no attention to the gap. Then one day he managed to get past the leaves and jumped out of the tank while I was at work. By the time I got home it was too late to rescue him.

Bettas are big time jumpers. If you buy this tank, make sure you block off the opening, perhaps with plastic mesh, so you have enough fresh air, but your little friend is safe.

Kordon/Oasis (Novalek) AKD37344 Methylene for Aquarium, 4-Ounce, Blue

Kordon/Oasis AKD37344 Methylene for Aquarium, 4-Ounce, BlueI used this as a remedy for a recurring candida flare up in my eye (swollen, itchy, red), and there was a huge obvious improvement overnight. If you are researching this aliment and considering this as a possible remedy, i absolutely recommend it. I've done tons if research and tried quite a few natural treatments, but this is the first thing to dramatically give me results that stuck.

For candida treatment: use a medicine dropper to add 2-4 drops maximum to a gallon of distilled water. Best to buy a trusted brand from the store and just drop them in that. Drink 8fl oz (1 cup) every 4-6 hours, depending on the severity of your situation. I recommend drinking 1 cup before bed the first time and seeing how your body seems in the morning.

IMPORTANT! take 500-1000mg of vitamin c each time u drink this. That will prevent any blue coloring side effects. Please search the web for these side effects. I did not experience any issues at all, because i was very cautious in both my knowledge and my dosing.

ALSO: take a multi strain acidophilus probiotic 2 hours after each dose. (Bifidus and lactobacilli -sp?are important parts so make sure it contains these. Yogurt is not enough and its next to impossible to find one with no sugar). Make sure the capsules are coated so they dissolve in your intestines instead if your stomach. MB is a very powerful antimicrobial that will kill all fungus and bacteria in your body, including the beneficial Flora u need in your gut to prevent the toxins from returning. Make sure u continue taking probiotics for at least 2 weeks after u stop the MB, so your natural balance is restored.

I hope this information helps people out there that are like i was a few months ago. Please do not hesitate to ask any question you might have. As i said, I've done lots of research on candida albicans and would be more than happy to share my findings.

In fishkeeping this is a trued and true to keep on hand for various disease problems... and becoming difficult to find. Especially the big box chain pet stores, all they want to stock are these really expensive tablets of a mix of stuff you don't need; and the quantity of water you can treat with what you get, is too small. Glad to find it still being made as a separate item. Glad to find it in stock.

It is used as a treatment for fungal infections. It can also be effective in treating fish infected with ich, the parasitic protozoa Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. It is usually used to protect newly laid fish eggs from being infected by fungus or bacteria. This is useful when the hobbyist wants to artificially hatch the fish eggs. Methylene Blue is also very effective when used as part of a "medicated fish bath" for treatment of ammonia, nitrite, and cyanide poisoning as well as for topical and internal treatment of injured or sick fish as a "first response" (as a side note it will stain aquarium tubing, airstones, and tank silicone blue, and kill off your biological filter!)

The bottle was fresh and with a long expiration date. It came in the new packaging. A few drops in the bag, and bye bye nasty. Great for highlighting Ick on a fish that it is hard to see.

NLS THERA A 1MM SINK 150GM

NLS THERA A 1MM SINK 150GMThis is currently the best dry fish food for general marine reef aquarium use. The .5mm Small Fish Thera+A pellets apply here as well big fish may have a problem with these two smallest size pellets, but tangs do quite well with both smallest sizes. Anemones and many corals love it as well. Some fish really go for this food rabidly right from the get-go while some have to get used to pellets, but they do.

I have used Thera+A for about 5 years now, and as my staple food for the last two years since Vibragrow small marine pellets went out of production. Thera+A does wonders for color almost as well as Vibragrow, naturally and helpfully for best fish health as well not just for good healthy color. Thera+A is better in some ways than Vibragrow was, but not quite as good in other ways. Thera+A is still currently king of dry fish foods rest assured.

Some dry fish foods really should not be used as a staple food and will not maintain top health like this one does. Thera+A has not only the wide variety but also the proper variety for maximizing fish health. Thera+A also has garlic which does seem to make some difference as well, in my opinion and in the opinions of many other marine reef hobbyists as well. I used to make my own frozen food mix with very similar variety, and sell it locally too, which also had Selcon ingredients in it as well. It was tops for taste (according to many, many fish) and for variety and health too, but was not so convenient to make or even to feed, and not quite as good on the color enhancement for the fish. The pellet form of Thera+A also locks in the vitamins (and other nutrients), until the fish can eat it, better than flake or frozen foods do.

Some hard to keep fish do at least somewhat better when fed this food, such as the Mandarin Goby which may ignore other foods or just not get the food value from other foods which they must normally must get from live foods (like copepods which grow naturally right in well kept reef aquariums) to give them the specialized nutrition they need to survive and thrive in captivity.

Como Fish Tank Aquarium Purple 4.3' Dia Landscaping Silicone Sea UrchinI bought this ornament for my beta vase and it works perfectly for my application. My beta loves it! He's always swimming through the little "tentacles", laying on it, and hiding behind it. The color is different than the photo the product is more pinkish in person than in the photo and the product that I received has white tips on the end of the "tentacles". Not a big deal for me, though. Happy with the product overall. Well worth the money.

SeaClear Rectangular Aquarium Combo (Clear)

SeaClear Rectangular Aquarium ComboI have this aquarium. It was my first. It's perfect for anybody who is looking for an aquarium but is scared of breaking the glass. The acrylic is thick and you can see through it just as easily as any glass. Instead of seeing a line of caulk/glue on each corner, the acrylic tank has a smooth sharp turn. The top is glued on. Mine has cut outs for a penguin 330 filter, a small hole for the heater and two larger holes in the middle. They are covered with another piece of acrylic so your lighting wont be splashed. The holes are big enough to move around without any problems.

I have very heavy Holey rock that needs to be taken in and out of the aquarium tank during water changes. I've dropped several big pieces numerous times over the years. I worry about hurting the fish, but never about the tank.

The acrylic tank spoiled me. I was given two glass aquariums since this one. I broke the first one when I was cleaning it. The other one is still in my garage. I've decided to stay with acrylic. It's tough and it's just as clear as glass.

I want to say to check this set and make sure you know what it comes with. The one I have came with the acrylic splash cover, a light/ ballast, heater, and Penguin 330 Filter. SeaClear Aquariums are great. I'm just not sure how Petco sells this particular aquarium.

Just ordered this tank, and waiting shipment. I'll update once it arrives!

I'm puzzled as to how people looking at this tank can't figure out how big it is. It's described as 36" x 12" x 16", which makes it 6912 cubic inches, or very slightly less than 30 gallons in volume, as measured from the outside. So, we'll call it 29+ gallons!

Buy SeaClear Rectangular Aquarium Combo (Clear) Now

Ok I believe this tank is a 30 gallon...thats what it said on the packaging paper when i got it. I wouldnt have bought it had I known, but anyways. This sucked that they didnt put the size, it just seemed a bit sketchy to me.

This tank has 3 cutouts on top, pretty small, I'm cutting them a bit wider, since I have turtles. Its a pretty great size tank overall, I just hate that the top is glued on. I would have prefered one with no top or one that comes off.

Penn-Plax® Check Valve w/Air Filter for Aquariums

Penn-Plax® Check Valve w/Air Filter for AquariumsI bought this check valve for one of the sponge filters I ran on my shrimp tank. It seems to work somewhat, but it never really got the chance to prove itself in an emergency situation. It's kind of a generic cheapy check valve, really only being protected by a simple piece of plastic that covers a hole when air/water is forced in the wrong direction. I can see it failing in an emergency... Once I accidentally put this check valve on backwards during maintenance. Quite dissapointed in it's preformance as it should not have let any of the air through. It stopped most of the air but there were still a few bubbles that made it past. The point of a check valve is to let no flow of air or water go through the wrong direction, and this one has failed. I can imagine in an emergency situation it would buy me some time, but eventually water would make it to the air pump (actually it might not since I keep my air pumps higher than my tanks, but I use a check valve anyways to be safe). Recently I bought some check valves and I found them to be of MUCH higher quality for less than the price of the Penn-Plax. It's opened my eyes to how shoddy these check valves are.

EASY install and does what it's suppose to. I had a power outage recently and this little filter prevented water from back flowing into my air pump, so it's a great cheap buy to ensure you air pumps quality of air and protection for the pump

Marina Deco-Wood Ornament

Marina Deco-Wood Ornament, Mini Betta BowlThis is really great piece, and it will be much realistic after 1 month in he water, I loved it.

There is the same product on another amazon page, but I ordered this item through from the company listed here. It's so amazing! The ornament looks really realistic, which is exactly what I wanted. I didn't want some bridge or roman columns because let's be honest, those items just look put of place in a fish tank. Not to mention in fish's natural habitat, those things don't actually exist. I wanted to create a comfortable and familiar environment for my fish.

The ornament resembles that of a rock or wood, but it is not heavy like either! There are 3 small plants that grow out of the wood, the long plant is EXTREMELY realistic and graceful, it sways in the water. The shorter one is a fuller plant, creating contrasts. Lastly the shorter one is delicate looking but does not compromise its quality.

All in all for $3.50, and that's how much I paid in total, since I am an amazon prime member, it's a STEAL! The company also packs the ornament very well! In lots of bubble wraps and air packets, so it will arrive safely to your door.

I rarely leave reviews, I think this is my second one on amazon, but this product deserves a two thumbs up!

Thank you!

Danner 02399 Floating Pond Thermometer

Danner 02399 Floating Pond ThermometerRemember when you had to keep turning a thermometer to finally see the temp? Well, on this one, start spinning. And when you can get the blue temp to show up...better hope you are on the Celsius side of the world, cause if you want to see Fahrenheit, you won't be able to see the first number. They have 5 pictures up and the only temps you can see are the numbers on the Celsius side...I should have been more observant of those pictures. I put a knife in to spin the tube, but I still could not see the whole Fahrenheit number.

The inside where the thermometer sits seems a little to sharp on the edges to put in my pond with my Koi fish. But the way they stare at me with those "feed me puppy dog eyes"....I just had to know when the pond gets above 50 FAHRENHEIT so I can start feeding them. After that I will throw this thing away.

Elite Air Diffuser

Hagen Elite Air Diffuser, 35-InchI used this in the back of my 75 gallon freshwater tank. I love the bubble curtain, but the only downside to it is that you are supposed to bury it beneath your aquarium gravel..I did that but it pops up out of the gravel when you add air. I have changed the flow of air and buried it even deeper, but it still pops up:(

Nice bubble curtain effect but needs work to arrange the tube and to hold it down. will work up if not secured to bottom.

I LIKED the diffusion of air, lots very tiny bubbles evenly distributed.

DISLIKED how the weights slid on the tube which made it difficult to arrange it the tank.

too easy to dusrupt its location in the tank. constantly fisxing around it.

OPINION use very flexible and lightweight inlet tubing, maybe get longer than 8 inch to make it more substantial.

Loving Pets Vegitopia Sliced Apple Dog Treats, 4.5-Ounces

Loving Pets Vegitopia Sliced Apple Dog Treats, 4.5-OuncesMy one year old whippet, Bean, absolutely LOVES these treats. I used to get him apple treats that were wrapped with chicken jerky, but once I found out about the Chinese made chicken jerky health scare I stopped buying them. I couldn't find any similar treats made in the US, so when I found these I thought my pup might like them . The apples are from Chile, but I don't mind that. I think he likes these even more than the chicken wrapped ones! I used to buy him jerky wrapped banana treats as well and he liked those, so I also purchased the Vegitopia banana treats. For some reason he won't them at all (which is the first time that's ever happened with a treat) so I only get the apple kind now. Overall I'm happy that I found a healthy treat that isn't super expensive and that my puppy loves.

I feel these are expensive for what you get, but our dog loves them. I substitute these and the dried carrots you can also buy, for the more fatty snacks when she is walking around begging for a treat. I tear one in a couple pieces and she loves them.

My dog goes so nuts for these things -as if they were a steak, I swear. I will definitely buy more in the future. I break off little pieces for her to chew, though. She gets a little too enthusiastic and I'm worried she'd choke on a whole one.

Oceanic 82052 BioCube Aquarium, 29-Gallon

Oceanic 82052 BioCube Aquarium, 29-GallonInitially had a 5 star review and had to update it. After 6 months of ownership, I've had nothing but trouble with this system. The aquarium itself is OK... hard to mess up a block of glass and some plastic I guess. But the entire hood including bulbs, ballasts, and fans is just a poorly designed money pit. The fans do nothing but squeal for 10 minutes when they first come on. Originals did that and even the free replacements are now doing it. Already had to replace the $30 actinic bulb after only 6 months, and finally had to take out the bio balls as they were loading the tank with nitrates (common problem with bio balls). The hood traps all heat too, and I had to install a supplementary fan to remove heat from inside the aquarium. Finally, every time I take the hood off to do a cleaning and water change, if I don't set the hood down with a feather light touch, the daylight bulb has to be reseated before it'll work again as the connector isn't a good quality connector. This seemed like a simple and effective kit when I first bought it, hence the initial 5 star review. It's not until after the tank cycles and the electronics have been in use for a few months that you realize how much effort it takes to get this setup stable and working properly for a reef tank. After all my fiddling, improvements, and replacement parts, I've got it working but I dropped my rating considering all the quality issues I've had. If the hood electronics weren't such low quality, I'd probably rate it 4 stars.

I bought the biocube 29 about a year ago due to liking its appearance and the 'all-in-one' design. Having checked out a number of reviews, most of which were negative about the construction quality, thinking I knew best, I went ahead and purchased one. Should have listened to the reviews!

I have kept fish tanks, both fresh and salt water, for many years with essentially no problems. With this tank...where to start...first, the glass had a number of scratches and is also very easy to further scratch (probably had over a dozen tanks over the years and never had a single scratch). The midnight LEDS were not working within a week. To be fair the customer service at Oceanic were very fast and efficient and sent me a new transformer within a week which fixed the problem...until last week...when there was a bang and a smell of burning and no more nighttime LEDs. As many others appear to have experienced, the fans make an annoying loud squealing noise when initially switched on..this last for about 10 minutes. Other annoying problems such as the back tab to gain access to the filter system is almost impossible to open by hand. You also need to keep an extremely close eye on the water level indicator on the side of the tank, if it gets too low then lots of microbubbles will fill your tank, stressing fish and corals. This has been a big source of concern for me when travelling for longer than a week. Plus it means that you can't use automated fish feeders because as well as being very tricky to install, you get major water loss resulting in the bubble issue.

Finally, what actually got me to finally get around to expressing my unhappiness for this product with this review was the following. I head read reviews about fish 'jumping' into the filter system. I had looked at this carefully when I set the tank up and concluded that either this simply wasn't possible, that the design must have been changed or that people were overfilling their tanks. Well, I noticed that one of my firefishes had gone missing a couple of days ago which was strange as he appeared healthy and happy. Tonight I was changing the filter (whilst grappling to get in the compartment) and lo and behold there was my firefish lying on the bioballs cover. Thankfully, I keep the bioball levels a little lower than normal and he was still getting wet, although he does not look to be in good shape (he is currently hiding or maybe even back amongst the bioballs). Fingers crossed he will survive. So, it took a year to happen but, yes, fish can jump in the filter compartment. Unbelievable!

On the positive side, it does look nice, however for the very high cost there is an expectation of quality, and this falls very very short. Overall I have been extremely disappointed in the tank and it has been a constant source of annoyance.

p.s. Don't even consider the Oceanic protein skimmer, its is useless at drawing gunk and means you then have to move the filter to lie on the bioballs, totally idiotic.

Please, please please do not buy this product! I bought this tank about six months ago, and am into it about four hundred dollars with the stand. During the first week of ownership, several fish managed to get into the back chambers. I contacted the manufacturer, and was sent a divider to put up as a barrier to the back. A couple of months ago one of the lights went out, again I contacted the manfucturer and was sent a new set of bulbs and ballast. This morning I woke up to find gallons of water had poured out of the tank. A large fish had managed to get into the chamber that contains the water pump. While thrashing around in the back, the fish unhooked the tube to the pump, which basically created a fountain. Water entered the hood lights, as well as ran down the sides of the tank. The lighting system has been destroyed and water leaked into my heat ducts and onto my newly refinished hardwood floor downstairs. Fortunately I was home when all of this took place. If not, I would have a tank of dead fish and ruined floors. This tank is going into the garbage. It is the worst product I have ever bought!

This is the worst product you can buy. I bought a 29G biocube and after couple of months it started to leak. I tried to communicate to manufacturer and received no response for a while. You pay a lot of money for this piece of junk and they don't even test the sealing of the product. No real customer service and your warranty doesn't mean anything.

Never going to buy any Oceanic product.

We have now owned our Biocube 29 gallon for over 4 years. The initial plus is the compact size and tidy design. I would not rate the "all in one" as a real plus as almost any decent aquarium shop can set you up with a regular tank, filter, lights and hood for less money and probably better quality. However it won't necessarily look as "neat" for the same amount of money. I would stress that this is not my first or last salt water tank.

Looks certainly rates five stars, neat in appearance, self contained.

Ease of use pretty easy to set up, but harder to clean than other tanks due to limited and difficult to open access doors. Removing the hood is not easy as the cables need to be disconnected or the whole assembly is awkward and heavy. While other tanks hoods are also not easy to remove you usually don't have to remove them to clean the tank, on the Biocube you are most likely going to have to. As for cleaning the glass a magnetic cleaner can't get around the curves so it is easier to do it with a (clean) scourer. The glass on our tank has not scratched at all in over 4 years. The stand has small opening for cables which makes wiring difficult.

Quality Poor, one star or less. Our tank leaked after four years. I just fixed it requiring cutting out the plastic filter box silicone and tank sealant on one rear edge and bottom of the other edge. Why did it leak? It was a manufacturing defect, the silicone was incorrectly applied on two seams missing the edge of the main glass entirely, it was amazing it took 4 years for the water to get past the plastic to glass seal on the outside that was not designed to be water tight. The sealant around the filter box was also beginning to leak but I doubt this would effect the efficiency of the system or pose any real problems. Fix time was about 3 hours, plus 48 hours for the sealant to cure. Hood fans also failed after running noisily for a short while, however they don't appear to be necessary, all they do is cause excessive water loss through evaporation. Like all systems with compact bulbs they do require replacement quite frequently, the ballast has also been replaced, and the parts are expensive.

Efficiency Everything seems to work well enough except the skimmer. It can't be used with the mechanical filter pad and is difficult to service, however we don't seem to need it even with live corals and quite a few fish. Tank lights get hot so you better have the tank in a fairly cool room.

Design Cube shape make the tank very good for a reef setup. This also helps with filtration as the live rock and sand (when cycled) act as a natural filter. However the water level is too high for the separation between the filter and main tank resulting in escaping fish. Most fish don't escape so if yours does you are better off taking it back and swapping it for another one that won't jump into your filter. (the fish that is)

Would I recommend it? Probably not, while it is not terrible there are certainly enough problems that other systems would be a better recommendation, especially for those new to salt water. The 29 gallon however is really small for a saltwater aquarium, especially a reef, and it does work. So if your requirement is a small saltwater reef and you no way want a bigger tank then this might be a good solution at least if you are lucky and get one that they manufactured properly.

Our tank right now We moved everything to a new 75 gallon reef tank (very easy to set up) when the tank leaked. Now it is fixed and filled again waiting to cycle and fill with who knows what fish, corals and invertebrates. We didn't scrap it so it really isn't a piece of junk despite what others might say, just not really that good either.

Marineland Rite-Size Cartridge C

'Marineland Penguin 200B/350B/170B/330B Rite-Size C Filter Cartridge 6 pk 'The Penguin Bio-wheel pumps are great: quiet, effective and long-lasting. (I have a 170 filter in a 39 gallon tank.) These size C filters are widely available, but the Amazon price is much lower than at my not-so-nearby pet store.

A word of warning. The day after changing my filter three months ago fish started dying. Next morning my 6" long Plecostomus was dead. Then three Clown Loaches, each about 5 " long. Within a week I had lost 18 of my 20 fish. Yet there was no sign of disease.

A water test and much internet searching finally pointed out what I had done wrong. I had neglected my tank for a few weeks. In a rush to catch up, I siphoned out about 30 percent of the water (more than usual), did a "better" than usual job of siphoning up detritus from the gravel. Then my biggest mistake I replaced the Penguin filter too! The result is the water chemistry changed too quickly. The Nitrates spiked to a deadly level. My tank, healthy for more than two years, needed to be started over. Took two months and many water changes before I could safely add new fish.

I visited perhaps a dozen "fish forums" and only one had a comment saying "don't change filters when you do a water change.' The Penguin filters and the box they come in carry no warnings. What I (and you) should do is simple: space your water changes and filter changes a week or two apart.

Now knowing how important the "aged" filter is (especially in a tank like mine with no under-gravel filter) I've started this habit: there's just enough space to get a second filter flat against the old filter, their blue faces touching. After a few days I remove the older filter and put the newer one by now doing some biological filtering in its place. That way the tank is never depending on only a new filter. For larger tanks (say 55 gal and up), the 330 or 350 Penguin pump holds two filters side by side, so never change both filters the same week.

Hope this helps you avoid the disaster that hit my tank.

Others who I am sure know more about water chemistry have made comments that suggest that what I did is OK to do. I repeat: I changed about 25 percent of the water, vacuumed the gravel extensively and changed my filter. AND MY FISH DIED SOON AFTER. Again, I suggest you be safe and not sorry.

I bought a load of these and saved a ton of money. Petsmart ships, so no amazon prime savings. Still, what a deal. My big tank takes 8 filters. I was avoiding changing them because of cost.

Funny, I changed all 8 at the same time and threw my tank out of whack. Too much algae and goo left the system with the old filters. I'll change 'em in stages from now on.
