This is my setup: 55 gallon tank, Rena 400 Air Pump, Lok Tite 5 Outlet Air Control Valve, Undergravel Filter with 4 upright tubes. My Air pump has two outlets and both of those are connected to the Air Control Valve. 4 of the outlets from the Air Control Valve run the air stones in the undergravel filter and the fifth outlet runs this 12" air stone.

It does exactly what I wanted it to do. It has a nice curtain of bubbles along the center of the back of my tank. I don't have it buried in the gravel because it is already hidden by rock and driftwood, and it is heavy enough to stay on the bottom. Between this air stone and the air stones in the undergravel filter, a really good surface current is created. That circulates the water from back to front along the surface and down the front of the tank. My danios love swimming against the flow.

Originally, I had this stone as one of two air stones off the same airline DON'T do that. You will be disappointed with the bubbles from both stones. If you do have more than one stone, be sure to have an air pump that can handle it and a multi-valve air controller so you can control the amount of air through the stone.

I like that it sinks to the bottom and stays there with the air on. Only half of the line produces steady bubbles though. I need to buy another two to complete the bubble wall along the back of the aquarium.

This airstone worked okay for approximately 2-3 weeks. Now there are whole sections where no bubbles come out at all and bubbles have started coming out at both ends disappointed to say the least.

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Super Activated Carbon Pad 18X10

This filter pad has the carbon bonded right to it. This allowed me to get rid of the bulky bag of carbon which used to take up one of the three trays in my fluval 205. It cuts easily with scissors so it can fit just about any type of filter. I cut two pieces and slip them into place in my Aqueon 55/75 HOB and they do a much better job than the official floss and loose carbon filters Aqueon makes for it. Debris washes off very easily; so as long as you have other places for biological bacteria to live you can wash these filter pads weekly and re-use them for months. They look like they are so dense they will cut water flow but that's not the case at all as they allow water to flow quite freely. I highly recommend using these for superior filtration with great savings.

I love this stuff. Carbon and nitrate pads are vary nice. They have lasted 6 Months before I had to replace them. Save's alot of money I run it on all my tanks 30gal,55gal,75gal. And it would have lasted longer if i kept the back off my old filter the plastic piece for reinforcement.

Nutrafin Master Test Kit, Contains 10 Test Parameters

This is a nice kit, I really like the case. It does have every test you would need for a planted freshwater and a saltwater tank.

The case makes it nice and easy to test. You can use the case as a test tube holder while you add drops if you need an extra hand. The pipettes make it easy to get and add water to the test tubes. It's easy to read the results of the tests except for the pH. I did get frustrated with the pH test because some of the colors are so close it makes it harder to get an exact reading. But you can get it with practice. However, I have been having problems with my pH and was testing so much I just bought a HM Digital PH-200 Waterproof pH and Temperature Meter. So I use the kit for everything else besides the pH and will occasionally compare the kit pH to the meter.

The color charts for the tests are on the back cover of each individual test booklet. Each test comes with its own little test booklet that tells you how to do the test in multiple languages.

So if you have a planted tank or saltwater tank or just want to have all the tests this is a nice test kit. But if you just want a test kit for all the needed parameters for freshwater then all you really need is the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT

One thing that is annoying is the caps for the test tubes are loose and as long as you hold it by the top and the bottom of the tube it is sealed just fine for shaking the chemicals to mix them. But when you pull the top off it is very likely that you will get some of the contents of the tube on your fingers. The test tube caps could be designed a whole lot better.

This kit has everthing you need and then some, for aquatic plant care! Great price as each of these kits in the store will run you twenty dollars and up times ten. . . . you do the math!

If you are serious about your livestock and reef-keeping, this test kit is not good. It has a nice plastic case, and all looked great when I opened it up. I was excited to use it but colors are WAY off and near impossible to read for anything over 0ppm of the color chart comparisons on several of the tests (including NH3 & NO3). NH3 is almost worthless even for 0ppm. NO3 will help you know you have 0 or slightly more, but anything over that good luck in determining what your value actually is. Phosphates color chart is okay, but is low resolution (lowest comparison above 0ppm is .225 which is already in your danger zone). Some of the test results are not consistent (like CA I can test and get 500, turn around and a second test will give me 580. An old API I have more consistently will read like 480). I do not advise hagen kits to anyone and will not ever waste my money on them again. I may keep the case to store future kits from different makers though... but this was basically a $50 cheap plastic case.

This Kit is ideal for any Aquarium lover, especially Salt Water enthusiast. It has all the basic test Kits you will need to water analysis. If you priced out buying each test from one of the other manufacturers you would spend easily $170 or more. Then you would not have a neat place to keep them all. Though the quantities of each test is probably less than what you would get from others. The only other test I had to buy for my Reef Aquarium is Iodide, Magnesium, Copper. Drum Fish Bowl, 1/2 Gal

A couple months ago I bought a 1 gallon delux starter kit for my friend's son's birthday and I must say I was very impressed with the quality of the plastic fishbowl. It is extremely durable and will not break when dropped or knocked over which makes it MUCH safer than glass (especially for a rambunctious 6 year old boy). Since I know absolutely nothing about goldfish the kit was super helpful because it included everything that was needed. It contained a silk-like decorative plant, gravel, goldfish food, chlorine neutralizer, a fish net and set-up instructions. I also purchased an adorable "fishing boy" top ornament which easily attached to the bowl's rim with velcro. Overall I give this product 5 out of 5 stars for it's outstanding durability and fool-proof set up instructions. My friend's son LOVED this gift and has been enjoying his new pet goldfish "Ralphy" for 4 months now. =)

I would drop a couple stars if I had to pay $8.73 (current price as I write and what Kay paid). I can't image wanting to put an actual fish in this cheap thing. Like Zthmpsn, I bought it to collect business cards. It's nice (but not great), not dark like in the main photo, and not too big. So, I've found it useful.

I love this product. I bought it because it was aesthetically beautiful and had great reviews, and I didn't let me down! The soft leaves are not only beautiful and natural looking, but they do not tear at my fragile betta's fins like many other artificial plants of inferior quality. I have a regular cube aquarium that is 1.5g with a single delta tail betta (Merman), and I will say that even a small grass ring is quite large. It fills a huge chunk of the middle, so if you have a tiny tank (smaller than 1.5g), I wouldn't recommend it. (I'm upgrading to a 6 gallon and mixing this decor with real plants so it won't be a problem). I shoved some sand over the bottom to make it appear like it was growing out of the sand. I really like that it is weighted in a ceramic ring there's not risk of it floating up and destroying the illusion of a real plant. Another huge plus of having this biOrb grass ring is that it is hollow in the middle, obviously because it is meant to fit over the air filter tube of a biOrb. In my non-biOrb tank, the hollow middle part serves as a very ingenious "cave" that my betta loves hanging out in, and sleeping in. It is so thick with hair grass that you can't see the hollow in the middle imagine my initial surprise when I was looking for Merman and he was nowhere to be found! Eventually he came lazily swimming out of his new hang out in the middle of the hair grass, it was hilarious. He adores it.

As a tip, it is definitely worth it to gently bend the leaves while doing that first rinse, so that they end up spreading outwards in the tank. It looks much more natural that way, and your fish will love swimming in and out of the leaves. The only con is that this is really expensive by fake aquarium plant standards, but the quality and fun of it all is priceless.

This really enhances the visual appeal of the BiOrb. It also nicely hides the bubble tube and filter. My only complaint is that it is fairly sharp. I will be replacing it with a small BiOrb pebble sculpture, as I would worry less about my betta's fins.

Hagen Fluval Surface Skimmer

I had really high hopes for this, especially after reading other reviews, but after a year of use, I'm not sure i would recommend it.

good:

* low cost. way lower than so many other surface skimmers

* adjusts to water evaporation (see below though)

* attaches to your current filter/skimmer

* has a top and a bottom intake that you can adjust, which allows you to balance it depending on how powerful your pump is. this is a little hard to describe why this is good unless you have one..

bad:

* it uses an air pocket under the top of the skimmer to keep the top part on the surface. I don't know why they don't just put styrofoam or something that's permanently floating. This design is tenuous. it's kinda like balancing a ball at the top of a hill. typically for me, the movement of the water eventually dislodges some of the air, then the thing sinks and is no longer a skimmer.

* the suction cups it uses to attach to the glass wears out. And if it's not attached firmly, the whole thing becomes ineffective because it doesn't hold the surface intake part on the surface.

frustrating. This is ALMOST an awesome product. If it had a mechanism for better attachment to the glass (e.g. magnet) and a better flotation for the surface collector, it'd be awesome. as it is, i wouldn't recommend this product.

I bought this version because the eheim version costs almost 3x as much and this one gets good reviews from folks at Plantedtank. To attach it to my Eheim intake (5/8" not 1/2"), I used the 90* elbow and joined the intake pipe to it using a short segment of 5/8" hose. The black center piece that stick up is the adjuster which opens and closes the lower openings. The more you allow flow through the bottom, the less the surface suction will be. Also, I had to drill a piece of plastic from my canopy to accommodate the height of the adjuster. But in so doing, you can increase or decrease the surface skimmer flow on the fly. Just remember to keep the top of the surface skimmer clean periodically.

Previously, I had a sponge prefilter on my intake pipe. I could still have one--just cut a short 2" piece of foam and slip it over the lower intake.

There are some bubbles being entrained into the intake from the surface water being sucked in. This has not been an issue. However, those with CO2 injected tanks should understand that outgassing of CO2 will occur from this area. This may not be a problem with intermittent activation--turn the center adjuster for a brief period when surface scum accumulates, then turn off most of the surface flow once the surface scum is cleared (takes about 20" or so).

Straight-forward installation, and it works great. Poor instructions, but the skimmer is pretty simple, so minimal documentation was not a problem. It removed all of the scum on the surface and made my 40 gallon goldfish tank glisten.

This product does what it says and removed surface film from your tank but it is very cheap to the touch and I didn't keep it in the tank. It removed the film within 2 days, 90 gallon salt tank. The film was back a few days later but I didn't want to put this back in. Main complain I have is the dependence on water level and how hard it is to set up and get working properly. I have it 3 stars because it did what it was intended to but it isn't a piece you can easily leave on your tank for a permanent fix.

It takes a bit of adjusting but once you get it set up it works great. Within a minute it had skimmed all the stuff off the top of the water and that oily residue that floats up there. It connected directly to my Fluval 405 with no problems. Great product and a great price.

It is a sturdy wall decoration that looks great underwater. I like the colors and the swim holes. I bought this ornament for my beta vase and it works perfectly for my application. My beta loves it! He's always swimming through the little "tentacles", laying on it, and hiding behind it. The color is different than the photo the product is more pinkish in person than in the photo and the product that I received has white tips on the end of the "tentacles". Not a big deal for me, though. Happy with the product overall. Well worth the money.

Snoozer Cozy Cave Pet Bed Small

My little guy (5.5 pounds) has three beds, and this is his favorite by far. He loves to burrow into it, and the internal wire keeps the hood up so he can peek outside. The small size would probably fit two 5 lb dogs, and would be fine for one 10 to 15 pound dog. My house is drafty, and I'm happy that this bed will keep him warm--it's like a sleeping bag with sherpa lining. This product is a little pricey compared to others, but it's worth the cost.

I got this bed for my 10 year old, 20 pound French Bulldog who loves sleeping under blankets. The bed is very nicely made and of good quality materials. It feels like it will be a very durable bed. There's quite a bit of stuffing. The front of the flap has a rigid insert so it stays up by itself. I was worried that the small bed would be too small for my dog, but it is quite roomy, she can crawl into the back with plenty of space up front. (see photo)

I have a seven year old dachshund with a really bad spinal problem; he's been in very bad paid for about six months now. Dachshunds are notorious burrowers and I had all kinds of blankets and towels and bedding in his dedicated doggie area. His name is Maxx so I call it his "Maxi-Pad." I saw that it was hurting him to burrow in his normal way, so I began looking around for something better for him. So I took one of my old wear-around-the-house tee shirts and stuffed in toward the back of the Cozy Cave. Next morning I couldn't find him and peeked around the top of the Cozy Cave and saw him sound asleep. He's been sleeping in his Cozy Cave every night since. My 2 dachshunds climbed into their Cozy Caves immediately. I got 2 Cozy Caves in July, 2010 to discourage them from always jumping onto the sofa and beds. I already had to treat the mini one for a pinched nerve in her back, so jumping has to be discouraged. This bed has worked...both prefer them to the sofa & people beds. Now it's December and have had the beds for 5 months. So, here's an update. When the beds were new, the small bed was too high for my mini dachshund, with the injured back, to easily climb into it. So I removed some of the filler and put it into the medium bed. Perfect! The filler in both have compacted a little, but shaking the bed plumps them right up. I have washed both bed covers 3 times and each time they look like new. Very easy to do after removing the plastic spline and the inner stuffed liner. I wash the khaki and red together with no running of color. They even dry very fast! It's so nice to easily keep their bedding clean and smelling fresh! I luv, luv, luv these beds! Buy one...you won't regret it!

Herbtana Saltwater Formula

I purchased two 16oz bottles of Microbe-Lift Herbtana to treat my 200 gallon saltwater tank. There were several fish with mild white spots(ich). I added 50ml of Herbtana to my tank every night for 10 nights(one bottle) with no sign of the fish getting better, in fact there were more white spots on the fish, especially a longnose butterfly. I continued with the second bottle for another 10 nights, still no improvement. About a week later the longnose butterfly died. This product in my opinion does not work and was a waste of money and a very nice fish. I still have the white spots on a few other fish and need to find another remedy.

Please use this before you use ANYTHING else that may harm your corals or invertebrates, or further stress your fish. It is simple, effective, and not too pricey considering your other options. Takes a tad bit longer to start working, but it DOES work, and will save your tank from devastation!

Not sure why the other reviewer had such a poor experience, but I've used this product for a year now with great success. I alternate it with Artemiss for 2 days (per product instructions) when I introduce new fish into QT in order to support immune system function. I've also had great success treating sick fish with both products both in QT and in my reef.

Marina Economy Algae Scrubber

I bought this scrubber to clean my glass and acrylic aquariums, it works fine on the glass surface, but when i tried to clean the acrylic I immediately noticed a large amount of scratches all over it. I don't know why they sell it for both glass and acrylic, because of my experience i only recommend it to use on glass aquariums.

It beats the magnetic scrapper in my opinion.

More control. Small glass tanks it can reach without hands getting wet. I recommend it.

This is an OK but I would not rate as great as the handle doesn't fit your hand very well and is awkward to use inside the aquarium. I thought that it might be me but others, kids as well as adults, say the same thing.

Rena 707 LG100 Automatic Fish Feeder

It could be better; however, all things considered one of the better ones available. I see that Rena does not list this on their website. Maybe it's not a product they are particularly proud of. The best feeder I have found is the Food Timer by YINSHENG which is not available on Amazon or anywhere else online that I have been able to find. This Rena feeder has one main advantage to that one in that it holds about 3 times as much food. However, it costs almost 3 times as much, too.

Pros:

1. Holds more food than any other practical feeder that I have seen on the market.

2. It warms the food to help keep it dry. This seems like a better system than the Eheim Feed-Air which I understand is supposed to blow a current of air through the food. (The Feed-Air I got seems defective in this way.)

3. Very simple to program, 1 to maybe 6 button presses maximum. Program it once and you'll never read the instructions again. This is partly made possible by the light sensing feature, so that it will only feed when there is light, a fair bit of light I might add.

4. Good mounting solutions.

5. Comes with a power adapter, but there is no option to use batteries, and this generates a couple of cons. Note that it would not be possible to warm the food using batteries.

Cons:

1. It loses it's programing and defaults to feeding once every 12 hours with any power outage, no mater how brief. It most likely only feed once every 24 hours if it was set not to feed at night. This could result in some very hungry fish if your away for a couple of weeks depending on the fish you keep.

2. If using more than one feeder on a large tank both feeders will start dumping food at the same time after a power outage, i.e. 12 hours after the outage.

3. It's loud, loud enough for long enough that you would not be able to hear if you were on a phone call in the same room.

4. The power adapter supplied is 110v only. Plug it into 220v by accident and your buying another adapter. Not a problem in North America, but it is in many other counties.

Conclusion: I'll try to find something better before I buy another one.

I am very happy I bought this item, not only has it taken the stress of worrying if the fish have been fed or not, it also has decreased their agressiveness. I assume because now they are on a very strict schedule with the automatic feeder. It also works great with their pellets and flakes.

Had it for over a month now and it works just fine. No batteries,programable and it doesn't clog. I have it mounted to the top of the filter cover (it' a bit large). The whole drum rotates and you can hear it when it's feeding time.

Well this is not design for a Aquarium with a top lid. The tape strips does not support the weight of the feeder. It is difficult to set the amount of feeding to be consistent. Since it is on top of the aquarium it tends to get wet just from the water evaporation. At this price I would had expected something better. Check the reviews outside of Amazon before you buy.

I got this one about a year ago and it worked great for the longest time.

There was a lot of complaint that the feeder had no battery backup and it would reset if there was a power outage so I simply hooked it up to a battery backup and that solved that problem. I lived in Florida at the time and the lightning storms in the summer gave us plenty of power outages (10 seconds would reset it)

However recently it started turning off randomly, it appears there is a loose connection somewhere that makes it flicker sometimes. When this happen then it will either reset to feed every 12 hours, a couple of times it just stay off and there it happened twice that it just kept spinning till it had emptied all the food out in the aquarium.

If using it I'd recommend checking it very often and replace it as soon as it is starting to fail, having no food or suddenly weeks worth of food dumped into the aquarium will not help your fish. I got this one as I travel a lot and didn't want to rely on having anyone constantly coming to feed my fish.

Very easy to use. But not too easy for my grandson. Not bad to install, love the option to have the gate open one direction. NO BAR to step over, so this gate is not a trip issue for older family members. We have three of these gates, the first was harder to install than the last and you can take it off the wall mounts easily if needed to move larger items through a doorway. It may not cover your widest hallway so measure prior to purchase.

This gate is so much more convenient than the pressure-mounted gate I used before, especially being able to open and close it with one hand, and it won't fall down because it is mounted to the door frame. And since it doesn't touch the floor it doesn't scratch the floor. The gate only seems to open 90 degrees, which is fine for me because the room where the dogs are occasionally confined is at the end of a hallway, so the open gate lines up against a wall when hinged on the right. It is very convenient that you can choose whether to hinge it on either side. The gate width is also adjustable so it fits a range of door or walkway openings.

The closing mechanism is slightly difficult because it requires you to lift the somewhat heavy gate up a bit and then set the end bar down into the groove on top of the opposite wall mount. The gate is attached to the fixed side by sturdy metal springs which provides the required "give" to lift the gate. However I think this simple approach will last longer than other designs, especially as the gate is made of metal. Time will tell!

API GH and KH Test Kit

I wanted a titration based test for hardness (for better accuracy than the test strip kits) and this was one of the few I found. I checked a local pet store and they didn't have hardness tests at all. The instructions are very clear, explaining the types of hardness and how to conduct the test. I found it very easy to use, except that my water is so hard it was off the scale in the instructions! I think the scale goes up to 12 or 13 drops and I was around 22 before I got the color change. But you can fairly easily extrapolate the scale to higher values.

At first I was a little hesitant to purchase this product because of the reviews, but this is very simple to use. Don't really know whats so difficult about this. Yes the Multi-Language instructions can be a little overwhelming, but just like one of the other reviews said, tear off the language you read and discard the rest. Other then that all you have to do is:

*Fill test tube to the white line

*squeeze ONE drop (only one drop at a time)

*cap and invert several times(Invert several times AFTER EACH drop)

Do this until you get a change of color in the water

for KH-Blue must change to Yellow

for GH-Orange must change to Green

After color change you must refer to the conversion chart on the back of the English part of the instructions

OK, firstly, there is no "laminated color card" regardless of what the product page says. This is one of those tests where you add drops one-by-one until there is a color change in the test tube. The number of drops indicates the water hardness. Really easy unless you aren't skilled at counting. For my tank water, I had to count all the way to 5.

So, my tap water is incredibly hard, but my crusty shower head already evidences that. My aquarium, however, is just fine. Cool.

I bought this test kit to supplement the test strips that I'd been using. Sometimes you simply lose faith and need a bit of affirmation. This test kit did affirm that the test strips are just fine.

I concur with all other reviews up until the date of this one. One reviewer seemed to give it 3 stars because of the awkwardness of the really long paper instructions. I can agree with this and my resolution was to cut off all languages I don't need! This reduces it by about half. Nothing else to say...it works and is well worth the investment.

You have to be very careful from where you buy. The GH test kit does have expiration dates on them, especially the gh does go bad after a year or so,the carbonate hardness tends to last a little bit longer. When you buy do make sure to look at the expiration dates they are in front of the bottle the last 4 numbers indicating month and year example(0216). There are some other makers that use a solution that does last longer so it depends on what quality you want long term. Hope this helps..........
