Fish & Aquatic Supplies Super Activated Carbon Pad 18X10

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Super Activated Carbon Pad 18X10This filter pad has the carbon bonded right to it. This allowed me to get rid of the bulky bag of carbon which used to take up one of the three trays in my fluval 205. It cuts easily with scissors so it can fit just about any type of filter. I cut two pieces and slip them into place in my Aqueon 55/75 HOB and they do a much better job than the official floss and loose carbon filters Aqueon makes for it. Debris washes off very easily; so as long as you have other places for biological bacteria to live you can wash these filter pads weekly and re-use them for months. They look like they are so dense they will cut water flow but that's not the case at all as they allow water to flow quite freely. I highly recommend using these for superior filtration with great savings.

I love this stuff. Carbon and nitrate pads are vary nice. They have lasted 6 Months before I had to replace them. Save's alot of money I run it on all my tanks 30gal,55gal,75gal. And it would have lasted longer if i kept the back off my old filter the plastic piece for reinforcement.

Tetra ReptoFilter Disposable Filter Cartridges, Medium, 3 Pack

Tetra ReptoFilter Disposable Filter Cartridges, Medium, 3 PackI own five filters that use these cartridges and they work very well, however I found that if you buy the Tetra 26160 Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridge, Unassembled, Medium, 12-Pack you're going to save $$$.

You can reuse the plastic frames (recycle, recycle) from these cartridges. You'll end up paying less than a buck a piece for the Unassembled ones!

They look and work the same.

They are both manufactured by the same company, Tetra.

Prime also!

These are too expensive, no matter WHERE you get them from. Sure, they are much less expensive online than at the pet store, but if you get the "build it yourself" pack, you will save a LOT of money compared to these things

I love this product. It's afforable and it is very durable. The filters doesn't cloud the water when you initially put them in.

A fair value considering at the stores it would cost you more money to purchase this item for your self.

These filters are perfect. We have a red eared slider and they are pretty messy. These filters do a great job of keeping his home clean. I've ordered them before and not had a problem yet. The only thing I would like to see is that you get three in a pack. Our tank has 2 filters so we have to order two boxes at a time. That gives us 3 changes. I would rather see 4 filters in a box. I would have to order less often. With free shipping they cost less than at the pet stores or Wal-Mart.

Up Aqua Pro-LED-PR-25 Pendent Light for Aquarium

Up Aqua Pro-LED-PR-25 Pendent Light for AquariumWhen I received this item it was a lot smaller than I expected. The actual pendant is about the size of a kumquat when I was expecting something the size of an apple. You should consider your tank dimensions before ordering this light. There is about 5 inches from the screw clamp to the cord the light hangs from the top arm. The distance from the tank to where the light drops from the stalk is not adjustable so it will work best on a tank 10" in length / depth if you want the pendant to drop near center. I will say I am surprised by how much light the 1w led puts out. Let's be honest you won't be growing plants with this light but is bright and provides good coverage in a small tank (I will be using the lamp on a 5.2 gallon Mr Aqua). With an 8,000K color temperature rating the led gives off a purple / blue light. The AC cord is pretty short, if I had to guess I would say it's 3 feet in total length. Overall I would say it's a decent light if you like the style / size and 8,000k color.

Drum Fish Bowl

Imagine Gold Llc AIMGFB8S Drum Bowl 2.5galI wanted to update now that I've learned more about proper betta care and have seen the transformation in my own fish from a few simple tweaks in the way I take care of them. I posted before implying that a heater isn't needed if you keep your house warm. I've since learned that bettas really need to be in water around 80 degrees F for their health and wellness. So I would get a heater and monitor the temperature with a thermometer. Also, I HIGHLY recommend you buy a filter for this bowl. There are several on the market that would work great in this tank. I highly recommend the Red Sea Art Deco Filter, which is what I've used. Anyway, while I now keep my betta in a 6.6 gallon bookshelf aquarium made by Petco, I still recommend this bowl for anyone who finds the smaller size appealing. Just make sure to get a heater and filter too. :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got this because it was the biggest fish bowl I could find that wasn't really expensive. It's hard to imagine what 2.5 gallons looks like, so I was actually a little surprised how big it was. Made me feel bad about the bowl I was keeping my betta in before. Anyway, if you're intent upon getting an unfiltered bowl, this is the absolute best choice for your fish and for you. Be sure to change at least a cup or two of water everyday since there is no other filtration, and keep the bowl in the warmest room in your house.

I bought this for my betta and he loves it. It works great, it's the perfect size for him and it's fairly easy to clean. It's also the largest bowl I could find and it is great for someone who likes to have decorations.

Although they look grey in the photo, there is nothing dark, tinted, at all about this bowl. Perfectly crystal clear. I ordered 4 of them for my bettas and I LOVE THEM!! They are a great size for me to be able to do twice weekly water changes and still have room for lots of tank decorations. They are, indeed heavy when filled with water, but that's to be expected in any bowl, and this plastic itself is very light. In the vendor's image, there also appears to be some strange indentations on the bowl-I don't know what those are. Mine are beautiful. The drum shape means my thermometers, heaters, and betta beds can all suction to the flat sides, and that less substrate is needed than in a rectangular tank. And for the price, you can't beat it!!! Do yourself a favor and get a scrubbing pad made for acrylic tanks, so you don't scratch the plastic.

Aquarium Battery Syphon Auto Fish Tank Vacuum Gravel Water Filter Cleaner Washer

Aquarium Battery Syphon Auto Fish Tank Vacuum Gravel Water Filter Cleaner WasherIt works only if you can figure out how to work it with limited instruction. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out that if you turn it to a 45 degree angle while the bag is submerged the suction will kick in. after the initial turn you can use it at whatever angle you wish. However if you just leave it at a 90 degree angle it wont work at all. Besides that minor issue don't shake it around as illustrated in the only crude diagram or the housing tube will fall off. If you use it in a blotting motion it works great. Hopefully this will help.

poor design, tube falls out all the time or hits motor, total waste of money do not buy this product

Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 991-Gallon Per Hour

Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 991-Gallon Per HourThe pump doesn't come with the standard suction-cup style mount to keep vibration away from your sump bottom and walls. So, I have it on top of a sponge with a another sponge between it and the wall closest to it. Now the pump is quiet.

I decided to go with Quiet One after reading several reviews and it only uses 65 watts to pump 991gph. One of these keeps my 400 gallon pond crystal clear and clean. This pump pushes water up just under 6 feet with ease.

I recently ordered two more for my future fish room. These will be in my sump pumping water to my tanks. 65 watts is great and a great selling point.

I use this in my pond. it works great. I have it attached to a canister filter that i made for the intake side and it filters the water clear and pumps up to the small waterfalls for that added effect. I bought this one to replace an identical pump that lasted for over 5 years running 24X7.

I wasnt sure if i should purchase this pump or not but decided to and worked out great. i lower the flow rate while feeding so my fish have a chance to eat. After 5 or 10 min i turn it back full blast and it circulates all the water very fast. The only issue i have with it is that it is a little noisy but I dont mind it since the fish tank is in the living room and not in my bedroom. Also the fittings that come with it does not work well so what i ended up doing was buying some fittings from HomeDepot to screw into the return end to get a tighter fit which at about $3 each but a simple fix. I would buy it again if they go out in the long run

Want Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 991-Gallon Per Hour Discount?

Great pump; does the trick. If you are concerned about the noise factor, it tends to hum a little louder if it's sitting on the bottom of something I rigged up a suspension mechanism so the pump is more or less 'floating' in the water. Very strong pump I have a ball valve in the hose leading to the tank and have it open less than 1/2 way.

Seachem Ammonia Alert

Seachem Ammonia AlertMany people have had problems with this product. I sure didn't! It's important to note that this product can read 0ppm Ammonia, even while a salicylate test kit reflects plenty of ammonia. "Total ammonia" measures ammonium and "free" ammonia. The former isn't so bad, the latter is. More on this below, if you're really interested.

When my kids came home from a school carnival with 6 goldfish, I figured we'd wing it. A few days later we lost our first fish. Another few days, and another fish lost, and I bought the Seachem based on positive reviews I read elsewhere. At the same time, I had the water tested at Petsmart. The petsmart test said ammonia was high, and after letting the Seachem adjust overnight, it agreed. A few partial water changes later, and the level was dropping, but still not zero. I ordered an API test kit, and it reflected just what the seachem did. Finally, I got some filter media from a friend's tank, and the nitrifying bacteria got going properly. Ammonia dropped to zero, and the seachem reflected this too!

I had no luck with the "quick start" and other products that allegedly contain live bacteria. Only the filter media seemed successful in seeding the tank with the good bacteria.

All in all, the Seachem functioned perfectly, and it really helped as a visual indicator and daily reminder that things were not going well in the tank. I'm now quite confident that the seachem will indicate if ammonia levels rise again.

Now for the nitty-gritty: I believe so-called "ammonia remover" products bind ammonia into ammonium. While I tried these, I never saw a substantial drop in ammonia from it. My thinking is that these products attempt to reduce ammonia, but the problem is that ammonium breaks into ammonia at higher pH, and higher temperature. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I've read on the Internet that the salicylate test does not reflect "total ammonia" (a term that refers to ammonium + ammonia), but it really does both according to the API instructions and by looking at the chemistry, the test creates conditions to convert all ammonium to ammonia. It measure the total. The seachem measures purely free ammonia according to their site.

I used the ammonia alert to cycle my new aquarium (29g planted) with raw ammonia. Ten drops was enough to get it to show green(alert). Once I started getting nitrites, I cut it back to five daily drops. The indicator would go from green to yellow in approx. eight hours. Once the aquarium cycled, it has stayed yellow despite gradual addition of fish population. This has been verified by numerous ammonia tests by my fish store whenever I bought more fish. One caveat on use: Be sure to remove the plastic strip on the back before putting in the water. It would be easy to overlook.

Buy Seachem Ammonia Alert Now

First off, remove the plastic covering the sensor disk! I saw one of these in a friend's aquarium where they hadn't done that so they assumed the "safe" readings they were getting meant their tank was doing great.. not so! I guess they figured it looked so simple they didn't need to read the instructions first, but that's a fairly obvious thing to overlook!

Second, this is the exact same sensor material used in Seachem MultiTest Ammonia Test Kit. That test only tests for harmful free ammonia (NH3), but to be honest the test is a bit of a pain with having to time the test.. I never liked pulling it out, having to deal with the tiny little disks in the container, and waiting 15 or 30 minutes for the results.. but this alert is already ready to read (the color scale is not the same however, because of the longer "exposure" time).

Third, kits like the API Ammonia Test Kit measure TOTAL ammonia (NH3 and NH4). If you have chloramines in your water you WILL have tend to have false positive readings because of the ammonium formed when you use dechlorinator on your water (such as Seachem Prime. It doesn't mean you water is dangerous, it simply means that the chloramine has been converted into ammonium, and the API test can't tell the difference. I've had my tap water test as high as 2ppm for "ammonia" with the API test right after a water change the Seachem test would show 0. The doesn't mean the Seachem test is wrong or inaccurate, it's just more specific just like this alert disk.

Because of the issue with chloramines in my tap water cycling a new tank is a frustrating experience trying to use the API kit. I would constantly see positive "ammonia" readings while I could see my nitrites had spiked and had gone to 0 and I was seeing increasing amounts of nitrates, but using these disks simplifies the process. A partial WC can be done as the disk starts to turn blue in a fish-in cycle (or if you are dosing ammonia for a fishless cycle, you can add ammonia a little at a time until the disk turns dark blue), and the effect can be seen quickly as the disk changes color from blue to green (or even almost yellow). I think it's one of the best products available when you can't rely on the total ammonia readings from the API kit.

Read Best Reviews of Seachem Ammonia Alert Here

I bought one of these for both of my freshwater aquariums. I had been checking ammonia levels almost daily with API liquid test kits. Now I only check ammonia if I get a slight drop in pH level. A drop in pH can cause the good bacteria to die causing ammonia to rise. My Seachem Ammonia Alerts seem to be working, but I haven't had an ammonia reading above 0 in about a year now so, I can't say for sure (if you keep pH stable, your ammonia level is more likely to stay at zero).... I have been using the Alert in my 75 gallon for about a month, and just bought one for my 20 gallon. Try the Ammonia Alert, but do not abandon traditional test kits. The liquid kits are far more reliable than the strips.

I had a similar experience as E. A. Bujak "bbujak". I saw this in stores and found it cheaper on Amazon through one of their sellers. I checked the chemical levels before putting doing a regular water change and putting in the Ammonia Alert sensor, everything was where it normally is before doing a change (slightly elevated PH nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia). The next day I checked the levels again, and they were where they normally are after a regular water change. A week went by and the Ammonia Alert never changed color, so I did my regular change and didn't test, thinking everything was OK. Another week goes by and I notice my tank critters starting to act odd, and one fish missing the tips of it's fins. I checked the levels and there were high nitrites, nitrates and ammonia-but the sensor had never changed color to warn me, at all. The sensor came out immediately and I did daily water changes until all the chemical levels went back to where they should be, and gradually increased the time between changes back to weekly changes as the levels stayed where they should be. I tested the sensor by holding it over an open bottle of ammonia, as per the instruction on the package, and there was zero change. Neither Seachem or the seller or Amazon would stand behind this product that put my fish in danger.

The only thing I trust to leave in my tank and give me accurate real-time readings is the thermometer.

Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE11230 Coral Pro Marine Salt for Aquarium, 175-Gallon

Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE11230 Coral Pro Marine Salt for Aquarium, 175-GallonOf all the reef salts i've tried (coralife, reefcrystals and red sea) Red Sea has worked the best. Even tho I only have lps softies and some insist a higher quality salt like red sea's isn't require I have notice my tank do better when using this salt. It is a bit pricier than the other but if you find a good deal from a place like this it ends up being almost the same price as the cheaper ones. I say this because I guess red sea has a higher density which ends up requiring you to use less. To get the salinity I like I typically use a bit more than 5 cups of Red sea per 5 gallons of water whereas the other salt mix's require me to use over 6 cups per 5 gallon of water.

I have not used other salt products as I started with this one. I did research and found the reviews and price on this product to be most desirable. I used it to set up two saltwater tanks. It mixes well and has all the components to sustain a saltwater tank with corals and fish. My corals are growing and fish are all well. SPS and LPS. I add minimal else to the water due to this salt containing most of what is needed. Doing 25% water changes required I have a good product to provide the correct balance of what my corals needed. I am happy with this product and have no complaints

Marina Cool Air Pump

Marina Cool Air PumpI have enjoyed this purchase. I have a 2 or 2 1/2 gallon fish tank (pet store brand) that i have had for several years. The air pump recently got very loud....annoyingly loud! I tried to get a replacement from the pet store (in store and on-line) that sells the fish tank, however, oddly enough, they don't sell the pumps seperately. I tried a newly designed Whisper air pump for tanks up to 10 gallons, and that worked just fine, however, it really was louder than i wanted for my little tank. I hoped that if i could find a pump for a smaller tank that it would be quieter. Indeed, this one fits the bill. It is quieter than the one i tried for a larger tank (and that one wasn't too bad either). Now, I hear the bubbles louder than i notice the pump sound! It also is quite powerful, so there are more than enough air bubbles for my fish. Granted, it isn't silent, but i don't expect that. Just a quiet hum. I worried it would move around due to it having 4 tiny "legs" on it, but it stays in place nicely. It has been a good purchase & very reasonably priced.

This pump is small, unobtrusive, quiet and does its job. Plus, the price can't be beat. I wouldn't feel right asking for more.

I hooked this little air pump to a ViaAqua6 LED bubbler in my 5 gallon tank and it's worked great for the 6 months I've had it despite it being left on for days on end.

Recently though, the pump's started to rattle and shake. Putting padding under it didn't help. I became worried I had to get a new one. (But even if I did, it would've been worth it!) Suspecting the case was loose, I tightened a rubber band around it, and I'm happy to report that it's back to its silent self.

Buy Marina Cool Air Pump Now

The pump died on my 3-pod Aerogarden and I couldn't find a replacement. I called Aerogarden and the agent told me that they don't sell the 3-pod pumps separately. He said he could sell me a new base (with the pump built in) for $30, but that if it were him, he'd go to a local pet supply store and buy the smallest, most inexpensive aquarium pump available and that it would do the trick; so I shopped around and found this one on Amazon.

Since I'm not using it in a fish tank, I won't dock any stars from my rating, as I'm sure it's perfect for small aquariums (I know nothing about them). But there are a few minor problems with using this pump for an Aerogarden. First, you can't install this *inside* the Aerogarden; it needs to be placed somewhere near the Aerogarden with a short length of plastic tubing (a minimum of 10 inches) going from the pump and through the opening to the Aerogarden's water basin. The tubing isn't included so be prepared to buy some. I was fortunate to have it on-hand. If you are concerned about aesthetics, don't bother with this setup because it isn't pretty. Pay the $30 for a new base.

Second, It vibrates a lot and will move around whatever surface you place it on. I used some Velcro that was on-hand to keep it in place and that also dampened most of the noise caused by the vibrations.

Third, this pump is much more powerful than the stock Aerogarden pump (the 3-pod is only half gallon, this pump is for 5-gallon tanks) so of course it makes much more bubbling noise. The first day it was very irritating but I got used to it and now I actually find the noise to be relaxing.

This pump is very very quiet compared to the one I had before, and seems to put out the perfect amount of air pressure to drive a single small bubbler ornament.

Perfecto Manufacturing APF33160 Glass Canopy Aquarium, 16-Inch

Perfecto Manufacturing APF33160 Glass Canopy Aquarium, 16-InchI ordered this for my 5.5 gallon tank and it is just barely to small to use. It actually falls in the tank when placed on top. If it were just a hair wider it would be fine. It's still perfectly serviceable as long as I offset the panes by having one placed more left and the other more right. I wont bother returning it but I'll get a different lid from another manufacturer next time. I've used Perfecto lids for years and they've always been perfect. This one was a surprise. It was for a standard All-Glass brand aquarium so that may have something to do with it.

I'm still giving it three stars for being exactly what it clams to be, 15 5/16" wide. I took off one star for using black plastic to connect the two panes of glass (instead if the clear plastic it has for the back piece) and another for being 1/16" to short in width to properly cover a 5.5 gallon tank. If it turns out to be troublesome (or perfectly fine) in the long run I may change my rating.
