Boyd Enterprises ABE16744 Chemipure Grande Filter Media, 40-Ounce

Boyd Enterprises ABE16744 Chemipure Grande Filter Media, 40-OunceIn our aquarium hobby 'seeing' is believing !

I use the 'Grande' with the Eheim 2080 on a 150 gallon

The results are outstanding, try it for yourself.

I drop this prebagged media (after a good rinse) into a canister filter and it keeps my tanks crystal clear for ~4-6 months depending on the bio load. This Grande size is great for big tanks like my 150.

Fluval FX5 Filter Foam Block - 3-Pack

Fluval FX5 Filter Foam Block - 3-PackIts foam, it filters!

I do have a suggestion for shipping these foams. I got a box at my front door and I think to myself, what did I buy that requires a box sooo big??? I open it and to my disbelief its my foam filters for my Fluval FX5 canister filter. The shipping box was at least twice as big as the boxes the foam comes in. Plus it was protected with what seemed to be yards of crumpled brown paper. All of this waste was real disappointing. ITS FOAM ! Its not going to get hurt in transit.

I suggest that Whoever ships these filter foams, Please, just tape the box or boxes together and throw a shipping label on it. Really, thats all it needs. PLEASE do not let anyone ship this item to you the way I just received my filters today. Its a sickening waste of paper products. Thanks!

This product is sold specifically for the fx5, and yet only comes with half the needed pads. A bit misleading. The pads serve very little biological purpose in a properly set up canister, and when you do want to replace them, it makes most sense to do all of them. Someone simply shopping for pads for their fx5 would buy this product, but nowhere does it say you'll need 2 boxes to get the appropriate number of pads.

For what it's worth you can get your own coarse foam in sheets or rolls from the LFS, and cut it to size and save a ton over this stuff anyway.

I use the Fluval FX5 filter for a 125 gallon RES turtle tank. For anyone out there that knows anything about turtles the are messy! With that said since I switched to the FX5 my tank has never been so clean and I don't have to clean the filter nearly as often as any other filter I have used on this tank in the past 4-5 years.

Read Best Reviews of Fluval FX5 Filter Foam Block - 3-Pack Here

A hardcore ehiem fan for 35 years, it was a slow progression over to the FX5 of which I now run three. The filter are beasts especially if you keep messy fish you see the pay off almost immediately. Still an ehiem fan and swear by their build quality but when you can you buy three FX5's for the price of one 1200 XL and that's without media it's a no brainer.

They both have pro's and con's I find the FX5's far too dependant on mechanical filtration, when those pieces of foam load up with gunk not only does your GPH suffer but water parameters become unstable. In an established tank there's enough nitrifying bacteria in your media and substrate to maintain the delicate eco system in your tank.

The foam however should just be tossed and replaced. Keep in mind it takes TWO packages for a complete foam change. Hagen which owns Fluval has been notorious for decades in over hyped non certified flow rates, the push for replacing and selling media and positioning products like a simple replacement foam which leads the consumer to think it's an all inclusive deal. Why they don't give you all the foam you need and up the price or vice a versa and let you know up front only half of what you need is included.

Thank's to a another reviewer I knew to order two packages per filter X 3 you do NOT want to leave half of the dirty foam in your filter. Clogged foam only increases water bypass, trapped air and a significantly reduced flow rate.

Aside from that, the foam is good quality. If I had the patience I would simply buy my own foam sheets and cut it myself. I do the same with 800 micro polishing pads but for me it's not about saving a few dollars and everything about crystal clear, pristine water.

The price on Amazon is by far the best I've seen. I added a few boxes or blue and white coarse and fine pads and the total with 2 day Free shipping via my Prime membership was under $100 about a 20% saving over the big aquaria e-commerce sites.

Zilla 11891 Coconut Bedding Brick

Zilla 11891 Coconut Bedding BrickCoconut husk is my bedding of choice for my hermit crabs. It holds the moisture well, but still dries out fast enough to help prevent mold.

This block will not take a gallon of water, like the label says. It will absorb that much, but it will be a soppy mess that will attract mold like no other. This block will fill up one ten gallon tank with around 4 to 6 inches of bedding, too much for most needs. I would recommend either flaking off portions of this brick or sawing it in half.

I've purchased husk bedding in the past that was dirty, and I've even found a cricket in one before from a local pet store. This was clean with only one piece of foreign matter plastic strip of some kind.

I also like the fact that this is larger shreds of the coconut husk. I've had some in the past that turned to dust after they dried out, but this one holds up well and is still fluffy in the tank.

Holds moisture, humidity and temperature well. I use this for nesting for my bearded dragons, as well as normal substrate for my box turtles. Couldn't be happier

Coralife 05150 Power Center Day Night Timer Strip

Coralife 05150 Power Center Day Night Timer StripThe power center wDay-Night Timer works just as detailed in the product description. It is easy to set-up. Since I got I don't need to worry about turning on and off my fish tank's pump, filter, thermostat and lighting. Actually I have programmed it to turn on and off the light and under gravel filter power head at intervals during the day and night (helping me to interrupt unwanted algae growth, giving some direct "light rest" to those species that like dim conditions and providing mild current to species that like it as well). I have plugged in the thermostat and my Whisper power filter in the constant power outlets so they work independently all day. My community fish tank inhabitants are happy and thriving. The only thing to care about is in case of electrical break downs, the clock has to be readjusted, which is very easy to do. I will definitely get another power center for our office fish tank. Good luck!

For a product whose sole purpose is to automatically time aquarium electronics, this item fails miserably. It lasted about 2 weeks before I noticed it losing time, between 5-10 minutes a day which got progressively worse. Finally it would randomly get stuck and not trip at the designated time period. Weak

I used for day/night cycle on a 55 gal freshwater tank. The power strip was mounted underneath the cabinet, completely unexposed to anything that might cause it to malfunction. It looks as clean as the day i bought it. I even tried adjusting the trip tabs to no avail, just in case one of them was causing the problem. Nope.

I had initially disregarded the negative reviews on this one, chalking it up to a bad batch, but maybe there's a bigger defect going on here. I'm just lucky that I didn't use it for anything vital. If you give a crap about your tank critters, for the love of god, pass on this one.

Buy Coralife 05150 Power Center Day Night Timer Strip Now

The timer never goes off on the time I set it, its always like half an hour later or so. Whats even far more annoying is the fact that as time goes by, the lights go on later and later and later until finally I have to re-do the settings. I have no idea what causes this but it is damn annoying. Another really annoying thing is how hard to it is to set the timer tabs. Some of them are so stiff that I had to use tools to push them up or down in fear of my nail breaking off. Dont waste ur time with this product. Biggest piece of junk timer there is on the market.

I have used this product for three months. Every once in a while, the analog timer gets stuck and throws the timing schedule off. Since I use this on a saltwater tank, a little salt/dust got into the dial mechanism and now it sticks on certain hours. Mt recommendation is to get the digital version or keep the power strip clean.

if you need this timer to keep time you better find another one to buy. Everyday I had to reset the time, it was off by hours not mintues.

Fluval Biomax Bio Rings - 500 grams/17.63 ounces

Fluval Biomax Bio Rings - 500 grams/17.63 ouncesThis is really an amazing value. Ceramic filter media like anything else in life vary in quality a great deal. Fluval Biomax is incredibly porous because it's not tumbled and polished. It's the rough texture and millions of tiny crevices that attract nitrifying bacteria like a magnet and encourage rapid growth.

Because these are so textured and allow for full water flow through colonization is very fast and you'll see the results of this product in fewer ammonia spikes as well as more stabilized water parameters. At this price they're beyond a great deal, plus this item is Prime eligible so add free shipping to boot.

My suggestion is to order more than you think you'll need remember to rinse them in aquarium water not tap water. The same applies to filter maintenance always rinse any filter media in water taken from the tank the filter serves. This protects all the healthy bacteria while getting rid of the gunk. Using tap water will kill your colonization on contact.

Although Fluval states to replace these every six months, I can assure you after 40 years of keeping fish this only to sell more product. In fact ceramic media will last almost indefinitely so there's rarely a reason to replace them. They're also great for seeding a new aquarium filter and shortening the cycle period.

Next to the eheim splintered glass spheres this is one best media you can use a great product at an incredibly deep discount.

I use this in several filters, not just in the Fluval canisters. It is great bio-material. I DO NOT change it out on the 6 month recomendation that is on the box. This will last much longer than that. I simply rinse once a month and keep it running through. I will remove any broken or crumbled ceramic rings, but those are far and few between.

Great stuff!!!

Buy Fluval Biomax Bio Rings - 500 grams/17.63 ounces Now

I've had my tank up and running for a month prior to buying the prefilter media, bio media, and filter floss. Before I installed these, my water was fairly clear, just a little cloudy, but nothing that I would have worried about. However, after I put this in, my water was crystal clear. I've never had a tank with water so clear. It's quite amazing. I have a fluval FX5 filter with the prefilter media and a bag of carbon on the top rack, 2nd shelf has 2 boxes of fluval bio media, and 3rd shelf has the filter floss with 2 boxes of biomedia. That's what it took to fill my filter. I found it was cheapest at the time on amazon. I have a 125g tank with a walleye and a couple dozen feeder fish (so a fairly messy bunch of fish). I highly recommend this stuff. Works great (been using this for 3-4 months).

Great product. Much better price then you would find in most pet shops. Establishing good bacteria in your tank is essential to having a healthy aquarium .

All you need to do is rinse!

Want Fluval Biomax Bio Rings - 500 grams/17.63 ounces Discount?

This is what you want for a canister filter of any brand. You don't need to replace them, I've been using the same batch for 10 years and they don't disintegrate. If Hagen told you they lasted forever that wouldn't be good for business. Bio balls, bio floss and lava rock are the most popular alternatives but the cylindrical shape of these keep the load from clogging with detritus. Good for big tanks with messy eaters, like large fish or turtles

Two Little Fishes NPX Bioplastics Reactor 550 w/ Media 400ml

Two Little Fishes NPX Bioplastics Reactor 550 w/ Media 400mlGood reactor and the Bioplastic pellets are starting to do their job after about 4 weeks of being put into use. (this is about the normal they say before the bacteria really gets going on them)

The only complaint I have is that they do not give you enough plumbing parts and clamps to hook it up properly. I was short a couple of clamps and had leaking problems initially. Thinking I could just use some coral glue (expensive super glue) to seal it, I found that trying that was not a good idea as the glue melted the soft connecting pieces. Two Little Fishes sells a expansion pack for their reactors, I bought one for about 4 dollars and was fine after that but it seems silly to me for them to skimp so much in the base package.

Drinkwell 360 Replacement Filters 3 pack

Drinkwell 360 Replacement Filters 3 packREVIEW ADDED TO DW360 & DW REPLACEMENT FILTERS I'VE MADE: I am careful to replace the DW 360 Filters by (or before) the book, but have to monitor them every 2-3 days, as well as FULLY CLEAN the entire system, to ensure no build up: filter goo ooze in the slats near the handle &/Or film throughout the system. I've had to replace the filters more frequently than the system says I should (under 2 weeks at times).

I have 2 small dogs and keep the system really clean. I was hoping for a less interactive water supply solution, but if it is something the dogs like and encourages more drinking it's really all about what's best and healthiest for them. I do put filtered or purified water into the system and do rinse the new filters per instructions. So far they seem interested in the DW over a traditional water bowl, so I'll continue using it and try to determine what I can do to improve the filter usage, etc.

Order this regularly for the Drinkwell fountain. Better price than in pet stores. Hint: The stainles steal fountain came back and it is the better ne, not the plastic

Seachem Ammonia Alert

Seachem Ammonia AlertMany people have had problems with this product. I sure didn't! It's important to note that this product can read 0ppm Ammonia, even while a salicylate test kit reflects plenty of ammonia. "Total ammonia" measures ammonium and "free" ammonia. The former isn't so bad, the latter is. More on this below, if you're really interested.

When my kids came home from a school carnival with 6 goldfish, I figured we'd wing it. A few days later we lost our first fish. Another few days, and another fish lost, and I bought the Seachem based on positive reviews I read elsewhere. At the same time, I had the water tested at Petsmart. The petsmart test said ammonia was high, and after letting the Seachem adjust overnight, it agreed. A few partial water changes later, and the level was dropping, but still not zero. I ordered an API test kit, and it reflected just what the seachem did. Finally, I got some filter media from a friend's tank, and the nitrifying bacteria got going properly. Ammonia dropped to zero, and the seachem reflected this too!

I had no luck with the "quick start" and other products that allegedly contain live bacteria. Only the filter media seemed successful in seeding the tank with the good bacteria.

All in all, the Seachem functioned perfectly, and it really helped as a visual indicator and daily reminder that things were not going well in the tank. I'm now quite confident that the seachem will indicate if ammonia levels rise again.

Now for the nitty-gritty: I believe so-called "ammonia remover" products bind ammonia into ammonium. While I tried these, I never saw a substantial drop in ammonia from it. My thinking is that these products attempt to reduce ammonia, but the problem is that ammonium breaks into ammonia at higher pH, and higher temperature. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I've read on the Internet that the salicylate test does not reflect "total ammonia" (a term that refers to ammonium + ammonia), but it really does both according to the API instructions and by looking at the chemistry, the test creates conditions to convert all ammonium to ammonia. It measure the total. The seachem measures purely free ammonia according to their site.

I used the ammonia alert to cycle my new aquarium (29g planted) with raw ammonia. Ten drops was enough to get it to show green(alert). Once I started getting nitrites, I cut it back to five daily drops. The indicator would go from green to yellow in approx. eight hours. Once the aquarium cycled, it has stayed yellow despite gradual addition of fish population. This has been verified by numerous ammonia tests by my fish store whenever I bought more fish. One caveat on use: Be sure to remove the plastic strip on the back before putting in the water. It would be easy to overlook.

Buy Seachem Ammonia Alert Now

First off, remove the plastic covering the sensor disk! I saw one of these in a friend's aquarium where they hadn't done that so they assumed the "safe" readings they were getting meant their tank was doing great.. not so! I guess they figured it looked so simple they didn't need to read the instructions first, but that's a fairly obvious thing to overlook!

Second, this is the exact same sensor material used in Seachem MultiTest Ammonia Test Kit. That test only tests for harmful free ammonia (NH3), but to be honest the test is a bit of a pain with having to time the test.. I never liked pulling it out, having to deal with the tiny little disks in the container, and waiting 15 or 30 minutes for the results.. but this alert is already ready to read (the color scale is not the same however, because of the longer "exposure" time).

Third, kits like the API Ammonia Test Kit measure TOTAL ammonia (NH3 and NH4). If you have chloramines in your water you WILL have tend to have false positive readings because of the ammonium formed when you use dechlorinator on your water (such as Seachem Prime. It doesn't mean you water is dangerous, it simply means that the chloramine has been converted into ammonium, and the API test can't tell the difference. I've had my tap water test as high as 2ppm for "ammonia" with the API test right after a water change the Seachem test would show 0. The doesn't mean the Seachem test is wrong or inaccurate, it's just more specific just like this alert disk.

Because of the issue with chloramines in my tap water cycling a new tank is a frustrating experience trying to use the API kit. I would constantly see positive "ammonia" readings while I could see my nitrites had spiked and had gone to 0 and I was seeing increasing amounts of nitrates, but using these disks simplifies the process. A partial WC can be done as the disk starts to turn blue in a fish-in cycle (or if you are dosing ammonia for a fishless cycle, you can add ammonia a little at a time until the disk turns dark blue), and the effect can be seen quickly as the disk changes color from blue to green (or even almost yellow). I think it's one of the best products available when you can't rely on the total ammonia readings from the API kit.

Read Best Reviews of Seachem Ammonia Alert Here

I bought one of these for both of my freshwater aquariums. I had been checking ammonia levels almost daily with API liquid test kits. Now I only check ammonia if I get a slight drop in pH level. A drop in pH can cause the good bacteria to die causing ammonia to rise. My Seachem Ammonia Alerts seem to be working, but I haven't had an ammonia reading above 0 in about a year now so, I can't say for sure (if you keep pH stable, your ammonia level is more likely to stay at zero).... I have been using the Alert in my 75 gallon for about a month, and just bought one for my 20 gallon. Try the Ammonia Alert, but do not abandon traditional test kits. The liquid kits are far more reliable than the strips.

I had a similar experience as E. A. Bujak "bbujak". I saw this in stores and found it cheaper on Amazon through one of their sellers. I checked the chemical levels before putting doing a regular water change and putting in the Ammonia Alert sensor, everything was where it normally is before doing a change (slightly elevated PH nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia). The next day I checked the levels again, and they were where they normally are after a regular water change. A week went by and the Ammonia Alert never changed color, so I did my regular change and didn't test, thinking everything was OK. Another week goes by and I notice my tank critters starting to act odd, and one fish missing the tips of it's fins. I checked the levels and there were high nitrites, nitrates and ammonia-but the sensor had never changed color to warn me, at all. The sensor came out immediately and I did daily water changes until all the chemical levels went back to where they should be, and gradually increased the time between changes back to weekly changes as the levels stayed where they should be. I tested the sensor by holding it over an open bottle of ammonia, as per the instruction on the package, and there was zero change. Neither Seachem or the seller or Amazon would stand behind this product that put my fish in danger.

The only thing I trust to leave in my tank and give me accurate real-time readings is the thermometer.

R2 36 Inch Signature Series Aquarium Moonlight

R2 36 Inch Signature Series Aquarium MoonlightI bought the 24" version from That Pet Place, and after realized that I paid more than the Mfr's Suggested Retail price of $46. While I love the moonlight LED's affect on my 26 Gal. Flat Back Hex freshwater tank, I don't like paying more than the Mfr. suggests I pay. I called TPP and a mgr. gave me what I wanted, a $7.59 product for free. All the other sizes are priced below MSRP at TPP, so I think my price was a mistake. I also, have called and emailed the Mfr with two questions: 1. What is the wattage per LED, and 2. Does the spectrum of these LED's have any kind of beneficial affect on live plants? They have been unresponsive so far after 5 days, and someone at R2 Soultions said the one person that can answer my question on "spectrum" would answer me three days ago. However, I am definitely enjoying these moonlights that I leave on all night, since they don't seem to disturb the sleep of my fish.

5/3/11 UPDATE = Thanks to That Pet Place, I now have a new unit. I'm glad I didn't have to deal directly with the mfr.! There is a six months warranty on these that my seller has authority to handle warranty issues on, and my first one lasted only 5 1/2 months! Three of the twelve LED's in my 24" unit went out for some reason. My replacement seems to illuminate much brighter than my first one ever did, so I'm wondering if the mfr. has improved these lights since I first bought mine?

This light is very flimsy but is very bright and penetrates deep into my 65 gal high tank. My only complaint is that the screws that hold the end caps on were loose and one was just rattling around in the box, but for the price compared to others on the market it is great. I only gave 3 stars due the fact that i had to walk to the junk drawer and do somebody elses job and tighten the screws. As for longevity of the product i don't know yet. I only have this for a few hours.
