This may be a 5 star to some people but I put a couple chemicals in my water so I dont know which chemical is working the best but I have a very clean tank and I am sure it has something to do with it.I will order another one this week and I am going to use it on my smaller 55 gallon tank by itself just to see if it works on its own without any other chemical.Sunday, November 9, 2014

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch
This product is made in China and is noticeable from the packaging (plain brown box) to the vague instruction sheet and very limited warranty.
The light itself is very compact and seems to have an average build. The supplied legs do not fit on a 1" tank frame, this was not an issue in my situation, since due to the light intensity I immediately knew that I had to raise it from the tank, I have a canopy and with this fixture being very lightweight, 3 zip ties easily mounted it about 4 inches from the water surface.
I purchased this light while planning to set up a standard 90 gallon tank, I truly expected to have to add supplemental lighting to reach the low light range for some of the plants I was planning on keeping, to my surprise this light far exceeded what I had expected, it is definately beyond the low light range even with a 24" depth, to the point where I will need to either diffuse the light or add co2 and ferts to keep the algae at bay. I do have a good bit of experience with planted tanks, HO lighting and injected c02, but unfortunately I just dont have much knowledge of par ratings which would help myself or others interested in this light to determine where this will put their tank. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and am fully confident that I will be able to grow more than the orginal plants I had expected to grow.
I will do an update in a month or so after after I see how plants respond and if there are any algae issues. Hope this helps!
Update:
After about 2 months of use, I love this light. My original impression was it may have been too much light but so far I have no algae issues and am not dosing any ferts. All plants are responding well, current plants are anubius, java fern, crypts, val, wysteria, red ludwigia and tiger lotus. I did have a brief power outage about a week after set up and when the power came back on only half the strip was lit, I feared what some other reviewers had mentioned, but after turning the power switch off and back on all lights were on. Another plus, I have almost no increase to my electric bill!I picked up one of these for my 75G tank. I've wanted to keep plants in there in the past, but the 4' bulbs just weren't doing it.
Ordered the Finnex Ray2 when the bulbs went on my old Coralife fixture, and I've been very pleased with the results.
The tank itself is much brighter now, and plant growth throughout the tank has really taken off. I'll be ordering more of these as my old bulbs burn out. Why sink the money on bulbs that last a year when you can get a fixture that will last 7+ years. Great purchase, and a MASSIVE improvement over the garbage Marineland Double Brights.
edit: after excellent initial growth, the plant growth slowed way down. The light still works great, and I would still recommend this unit, but if you're going for a heavily planted tank this may not be the best option.

I purchased this light to replace a previous 332 watt amazon purchase that got hot enough to melt the fish tank supports.Ordered it yesterday and it was on my doorstep today WOW!
Packaging was great. Plugged it in and it is very bright. My tank is a 150 gallons salt water with some mushrooms, anenomes and polyps. The previous lighting was 2 48" 220 watt power compact JEBO kits that worked great for about 8 years. I would say this LED light set is as bright or slightly brighter then 1 220/260 watt power compact light kit.
The light is very white like 10,000 Kelvin.
I LOVE how cool it gets, I would say it is under 130 degrees afte being on for 4 + hours.

I was pretty disappointed with the unit I received. I immediately plugged it in and fired it up when I got it, only to find that half the LEDs did not turn on. Due to my location, an exchange would probably end up costing me more in shipping than this light is worth, so I popped it open. Finnex uses exceedingly low quality solder inside this thing, and in my unit some parts were not even soldered, just shoved in the casing. I spent about an hour resoldering and reassembling the unit, it works great now. In the meanwhile, you get what you pay for, look elsewhere for your LED lighting needs.Want Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch Discount?
Ordered one, received it, only half of the LEDs worked, returned it, repeat. The 48" version appears to have two LED strips from teh 24" version.Decided to use two smaller ones instead. There appear to be some product quality issues so it would be wise to use multiple smaller lights instead of one larger light. That way, when one fails in the future, you only have to replace a smaller one.
General Finnex Ray2 Daylight info:
LED strip is about 1" per 8 LEDs. Product description shows the number of LEDs. This may be important to you because 16" version only has 10.5" of LEDs. The 30" version has the exact same LED strip as the 24" version.
Obtain the number of LEDs from the product description and divide by 8 to obtain width of LED strip.
I was not happy to receive a 16" version with only 10.5" of LEDs. I exchanged it for a 24" and I'm very happy with the 24".

TrueLumen 24-Inch TrueLumen Pro LED Strip Light, 12, 000K Diamond White with Canopy Brackets
When I put the light over my tank the light penetrated all the way to the bottom, and the color was great. My tank is 26" deep and I've had trouble getting lights that can penetrate that deep. This light does it covers the whole front of the tank.
My light comes with a connector to add 2nd light as soon as I can. I was told that the manufacture was changing the fixture so you will be required to buy a the splitter as a seperate purchase.I bought 2 24" strips, and I should not have. These do what they say they do. They are BRIGHT! I really didn't need this much light over a 50 gallon planted tank. Ordering the 8,000K strip next.

I replaced two 65w bulbs with these lights. I got the diamond white and fusion strips. They work really well together. Provides enough light for my 52 gallon corner tank. If you are looking to have coral, you need to keep them up high (few inches away from the water level) because just 2 will not produce enough light to reach the bottom. 4 of these will definitely do it.Marine Metal Power Bubbles 12-volt Air Pump

Using this for my koi pond via a 12V battery & solar panels. I left it outside all winter long (under a waterproof container) with 2 air stones and tubes going into the center of the pond. It has not failed a single day and kept the pond from freezing the entire winter. Not it's main purpose but if it can withstand the freezing outdoor temperatures and constantly being turned on and off via a timer (every 15 minutes!) for months on end... It will work without any issue for a boat live well!
(I live in MA and we got several big storms hitting as high as 3 ft of snow at one time, still no issues keeping the pond from freezing, very strong bubbles!)

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 48-Inch
I debated a while whether to give it four or five stars, because indeed, there is a single power cord, which means you cannot switch from daylights to moonlights with a timer. You can use a timer to switch the light on and off, but whichever lights are on or off (day or moon) is up to you. However, this is clearly in the description of the item, so I don't think it is fair to remove a star since it is as described, and not a surprise upon receipt. Nonetheless, the single power cord is a pain. If you need a 48" light fixture, chances are you're a pretty serious aquarist, and you want to use a timer, not manually turn daylights and moonlights on and off every single day. Still, as far as I can tell, you can buy two of these lights, one just for the daylights and one just for the moonlights, and still spend less than you would on the competition. In addition, few LED lights use LEDs that are appropriate for plant growth as this one does. The light runs fairly cool, it is bright, slim, and overall I think it is a great purchase at a great price.
If you want to save some money and you are decent with DIY projects, you can easily install a timer on these lights. Much easier than most DIY LEDs out there, because you already have all the components in one package, except the timer. A quick search on eBay for "digital timer relay switch" should find you the right timer (about $10). Make sure it is the 12V version (even though the light power supply provides 15V, I've had no problems using these timers with it; the rectangular looking timers with a yellow tab on eBay). The timer and some wires is all you need (maybe a small enclosure box from Radio Shack to make it look nice). Installed between the light power supply and the actual lighting unit (you do have to open up the light itself to connect three wires or so), the timer will provide you with more than a dozen easily programmable lighting events, including time of day and day of the week. In other words, this timer will provide MUCH more flexibility than any other standard timer out there. The only drawback is that it will only switch directly between daylights and moonlights; but that's fine by me. Installed six months ago, everything still running smoothly, and best of all, by itself! (Also installed on the newer light, working fine now for at least a month.) FYI, I'm not an engineer or an electrician, or anything like that, so it's really not that difficult to do. As for being able to send it back for warranty work, that's up to you, if you're careful... Must I really say: "Do this at your own risk, I am not responsible if you screw things up."? Done.
I don't understand why Finnex didn't install something like that themselves, they could easily do it for less than $20 (I did), and I'm sure they would sell much, MUCH better with a built-in timer.
Enjoy!Died after exactly 3 months of use.
I like this light (which is why I'm still giving it 3 stars) and am working with the warranty on the fixture, but finding a new box and shipping this back isn't exactly cheap. Not to mention, my plants that were growing so nicely will now take huge steps backward. Just 3 months for an LED light fixture? And I've got the tank covered so this isn't a moisture issue. Pretty disappointed right now.
However, I'll get a chance to experience their warranty service. With good service on that front and a replacement/repair that lasts as it should I'll be back to bump this rating back up to at least 4 stars. No manufacturer I know has a 100% success rate on manufacturing defect and durability. So... we'll see!

1st... I'm a noob to reef tanks. That said... I started out a few weeks ago with an older setup that had 4x T8 VHO's in it. They blew after 2 weeks of use. Saw that coming though (little earlier than I had hoped). Anyhow... had a Coralife 4x t5 and Halide combo light for a 120g setup that I used while I shopped around. Saw this light and decided to give it a try (my reef is a 55g).Pros:
-Runs VERY cool (heat free really).
-Good light output for a live plant or fish only setup.
-Gives a good shimmer in the water.
-Sits well on the tank. Not too high... not too low.
Cons:
-NOT bright enough alone for a reef setup.
-Does NOT have a way to seperate the moon lights for timers (on one power source).
-Switches are on each side of the light. BARELY accessable with my cover on top... but it does work.
I pared it with a Coralife T5 setup (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HHQDKM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. $58 here on Amazon) and I'm very happy with the setup. Just under $200 for a NICE reef light setup. Time will tell though if these were good purchases.
While I am a noob... I have been all the way around the block now on lighting options in a short time on this tank so when I say it's not bright enough... I'm comparing it to my other lighting sources that I had/have.
All in all... this is a good light (again... NOT good enough as the ONLY light for a reef tank though IMHO). I think it's a little overpriced maybe... but not WAY off (compared to buying a light setup in a pet store... this IS a FAR better deal from what I've seen).

Eheim Aquastyle Nano Aquarium 6 Gallon 24 Liter Complete Kit - Eheim AEH6402370
Perfect choice. Small footprint, filter works very well and is EZ to clean. Light height and placement is adjustable (also comes off easily when cleaning the tank). And the bonus ... the fish look a little magnified on the corners due to the curved glass.
I have the 6 gal. If I had to do it again I would go for the 9 gal. Not very much larger (maybe 1" wider, higher), and would hold more fish & plants.
Filters and media tough to find. Do a Google search. Wound up finding it at BBB online, not in store.
One negative: Comes with a glass top (yea). It rests on top BUT it comes with little plastic grippers that fall off fast, often, and get lost quick. I put tiny pieces of Velcro on each corner. Doesn't get near the fish (safe), works like a charm and not very visible.
If space is limited, you are OK with 5-6 fish and you want a standout aquarium this is a winner.
My tank looks gorgeous; most fun I've had in a long time. All fish & plants from Fishtown, Ramsey, NJ:
Got these b/c they add activity and don't count toward your fish count:
4 red shrimp (they are real characters with 10 pair of legs they swim wildly to the top, dangle from the plants and eat some of the food that falls to the bottom)
2 snails (keeps glass clean, take care to get snails not pre-disposed to multiply alot)
1 sucker (for algae, not a catfish, has a stripe on his back, don't remember the name, )
Fish:
(7 vs. 6 recommended for tank. 1extra b/c most are small and I'll likely lose 1)
2 honey gourami's (1.5" long but nice and wide so they stand out, grow to 2"+/-pretty yellow and orange)
2 fancy endlers (3/4", grow to about 1" max., elaborate tails)
1 blue endler (v. small, grows to 1", blue is hard to find)
1 unknown endler (v. small)
1 small black molly (small, grows to about 1")
Plants:
All live. Some float with long roots hanging down, 2 tall narrow swaying plants, 2 short wide leaf.
Other:
Natural gravel (small). A few small fun-shaped rocks I found in the garden (boil them first), and one big hollow black rock with holes for fish to swim in & out.
Watch out for rogue snails. I use a net to put fish in my tank, avoiding putting the store water in (don't want snail eggs again).
Have fun!!!

Eshopps PF Nano Overflow Box - Up to 50 gal.
Product has conflicting information. Amazon product description says flow rate is 200 gph. The enclosed instruction and Eshopps web site say 100 gph. My pump is 150gph and it seems okay.
Product is made from sturdy Plexiglas. The U-tube has little scratch on the inside surface. It doesn't seem to affect the performance.
The bulkhead size is 1.25 in. I connect a corrugated washing machine hose ($9) from Home Depot to the bulkhead secured with a cramp.
Instructions do not have any diagram. You figure it yourself (come on Eshopps. Can't you hire an illustrator or graphic designer?)
No need to siphon! Simply connect the box with the U-tube and submerge the entire thing in the water. Ensure no air is inside the U-tube and the box. Raise is up slowly while keeping the water in the box. Hang it on the tank. Done!
In case of power goes off, the U-tube will self-start. I tested this. I just need to connect my pump with a swing valve so the water does not flow back to the sump.
Overflow box does not produce any noise.Nice little owerflow but the "U" hose who goes over from the tank and in to the outside box was overbendt from the producer and broke when trying to fit it. I would prefer to have the adjusting screw at the bottom outside to be a bit longer or the "bridge" who lies over the glass to be a bit shorter, very few have 3 cm wide glass in a nanotank. Due to this I have to find someting extra to put between the glass and the adjusting screw to eliminate movement and fish gettin stuck behind the internal box.

Elite Sponge Filter
I bought several items of this description to compare them, this was the second one i used.
I think it could be improved if it allowed an airstone to make finer bubbles (reducing noise) but it works as advertised and the price was decent.
Just a note: small, family run aquarist shops carry sponge filters of various sorts... big box stores rarely carry them.
If you're in the boonies, buy on amazon; otherwise visit your local small, non-chain store.Price is right. Doesn't mount very well and is noisy it the tank. Does the job of cleaning the water as it should. For the price it is a good buyThis little filter is great for my Betta. I run it for an hour or two and it keeps his tank nice and clean.

Cat Dancer 101 Cat Dancer Interactive Cat Toy
...my cat was obsessed. no other toy could distract her and amuse her the way this one did. i'd drag it and whip it around and she'd chase it everywhere. i could wake her from her sleep just by the sound of it rubbing against the rug, and she'd be off and chasing.
she NEVER tired of this toy. and our new kitten (and her new friend) took to it right away as well.
this 'toy' pissed me off to no end because it was so basic and simple, and yet worked where my ornate and 'thought out' toys (e.g. mini remote controlled cars with feathers attached) didnt. I was super-skeptical when I took this thing out of the bag.
It is literally a length of wire with some twisted brown paper bits on the ends (kindof like pieces of the thin round handles on a brown paper shopping bag). There's one piece on the end that you hold, and maybe 4 or so on the target-end for the kitty. The stiffness of the wire is just perfect such that when you hold it lightly, and the cat bats at the end, it bounces and flies all over the place, with near-zero effort on your part. You can, of course, move it some more on your own and entertain the cat with more movement, but it works very well to just hold the wire lightly. I was a little worried that it might poke an eye out or something, but the ends of the wire are bent into loops so that shouldn't happen. It is a stiff, significant-gauge wire though. Really, it's crazy-simple, but really effective. My kitten gets bored with the fancy feather wand I have for him, but he keeps going with the Cat Dancer until I take it away from him because I'm too tired to hold it out and watch to be sure he doesn't chomp down on too much wire. I wouldn't pay a lot for it, solely because I'd feel like a dolt for shelling money out for wire and paper/cardboard twisty bits, but it's a great toy.
Buy Cat Dancer 101 Cat Dancer Interactive Cat Toy Now
Both of my cats really love this and my wallet adores it because it's cheap as well as being on the fairly durable side as well. My cats are active (they love to play, run after and catch things) and like to play two or three times a day. As several other reviewers have noted, you should keep a light grip/pinch on one end and that's enough to make the other end swing and weave around in the air. Then, just roll your end between your fingertips a bit and it'll bounce a bit and swing around and (hopefully) entice your kitties play with the other end. I've also held it in the middle and let both cats go at their seperate end but it's stiffer that way and doesn't move as much.Boo is about four and half years old and the other, Poxie, is three. Poxie will play with anything that moves (or is shiney and will chew carboard for the heck of it), so she loves it. Boo is a bit pickier likes to "stalk" things and be convinced that he really does want to play. I usually to drag this around and wiggle it on the floor a bit to catch his interest but he always comes around and will start batting at it in the air as well. Both will go wild if it wiggles (and makes noise), just barely visiable, from the edge of a cardboard box or paper bag though =)
It holds up very well, they will pounce and chew on the cardboard and wire. The ends of the cardboard do fray a bit and get soggy but they're tightly coiled with the wire and it lasts a good amount of time. The price is great also, so no qualms about getting a new one very couple of months!

Just a warning to all who have this toy. Be careful and don't leave this toy around unattended. Plus, make sure to throw it away once the cardboard pieces get old and are falling to pieces. My friends cat recently almost choked to death on the hook that holds the cardboard pieces together. Luckily she eventually threw it up, but it could have turned out very ugly.
