Tetra Pond Algae Control

I tried this product to control green scum in the fountain in my back yard. I followed all instructions carefully, but after several applications it appears to have made no dent in the growth of the algae.

My fountain is the back yard at my home in the Phoenix metro area, so daytime temperatures are very high and nighttime temps fall only into the 80s. It might work in less extreme conditions, but it certainly is not doing the job for me.

The only product that has made my pond clear! My pond went from opaque (green) to clear overnight after the first use!

I have used this twice now. Both times it seems to work great right away, but doesn't seem to last as long as I had hoped. Maybe it is just because my pond is in full sun and does not have enough other plants to use up the fish nitrogen. Still a great product for the price.

Coralife 05146 SL-65 Super Luft Air Pump

I purchased this air pump seeking a pump that would be able to power a large set of airstones at a depth of 3 feet. Many other pumps that I tried were not quite up to the task.

This pump is louder than a standard vibrator pump, but if you need a heavy duty device that pumps a lot of air, then this is the one.

Update: 8/18/2012 I'm sorry to report that the pump has failed after 8 months of service at a depth of 3 feet. Although the pump was loud, it was acceptable given the volume of air that it pumped when new. However, over time it got louder and then lost the ability to provide even a meager amount of air at a depth of 3 feet.

I have gone through several aquaruim air pumps in the last 3 years. The last one was a whisper 100 which was only about half the price of this one and lasted about 6 months. The whisper pump was really not any quieter than this one. This pump puts out alot of air and can be adjusted easily with the valves on the included manifold. It is not silent, but it is not realy loud either. If you want a silent pump, this is not for you. If you need good constant air it will deliver. I have had this pump for about 1 month now with no issues.

I read the reviews and I knew that this would not be "quiet", but I was not ready for how loud it truly is. Maybe it does a great job. Maybe it's better than diaphragm pumps...that's all well and good, but if you can't be within 30' of the tank because it's so loud, it is a waste. We put this in the tank cabinet and turned this on with the air valves off. The sound that came from the pump was the equivalent of a loud TV. There is no way to have a normal conversation in the same room as this pump when it was running. As a test, I turned it on, closed the cabinet, and made a call from my speaker phone that is about 10' from the tank, and the person on the other line asked me what the noise was without me prompting them. So, while this may very well be a solid product for what it is supposed to do, it is just too noisy to be practical in most situations.

Works really good, but it is VERY loud. You can make it run quieter by running a 3/8ths inch air line from the intake port on the pump to somewhere else. Preferably with cool air, as it runs quite hot.

Very well made and I knew it was loud, so I'm not going to knock any points off for that. It doesn't say anywhere on the box that it's a quiet pump, so there you go.

Seachem Prime Freshwater and Saltwater

I was concerned when I tested my aquarium water and found that the ammonia wasn't 0.0 even though I have been consistent in doing weekly water changes. Just on a hunch, I went ahead and tested the water from my faucet. This is when I found out that my public water had ammonia in it. Sharp creases resulted in a less than desirable result once applied to the back of the tank. I was so pleased with the old powerhead I wanted to replace with same.

I was glad to see the model 660 was still available. The reliability and flexability would be hard to beat, especially at the price. They withstand being cloged, power outage, and being run "dry" during partial water chages. Definately a solid performer. Having tended over 60 aquiriums (salt and fresh)in the past at a local pet store and the personal use at home gives me a good idea of what works and what doesn't. This thing runs like a champ! Functional, flexable, tough and inexpensive.

I've used this pump now for about a year and it still works perfectly. Water circulation is outstanding. Only gripe I would have is that they need to be primed after every water change. For some reason, they hold the air inside the pump preventing water from flowing. Simple remedy is to just turn the unit upside down in the water for a few seconds to let the air out, once the water starts flowing again, just reinsert it back into the filter tube. Works perfect after that.

I was under the impresion that the whole thing was made out of pressed hay or something of that nature, but it's just a thick cardboard type material with a coating of hay stuck on top of it. My bunnies still like it and love to run through it and hide in it, but they don't really nibble on it at all.

I did not use these rocks for a turtle, I used them for a fish tank and there awesome! Small rocks are annoying, and get sucked up by the vac when cleaning the tank. Not these!

They look really nice and because they are the real thing they make our turtle's enviroment genuine and eco friendly in appearance and environmental safety. I loved this turtle gravel! At home, I have 2 red eared sliders and the gravel looked great in my tank! It was a bit pricey, but if you are willing to dedicate your money to the turtles,it was worth it! Zoo Med Coral Flora Sun Plant Growth Bulb T8 17 Watts, 24-Inch

Unlike the more effective light bulbs sold for the more expensive light fixtures intended to promote lush growth for most types of aquatic plants, these bulbs are intended for use in the less expensive fluorescent lighting fixtures, the kinds that come with most aquarium kits. These are the standard black light fixtures that sit on the glass top and that require light bulbs that are 6" shorter than the actual length of the fixture on the outside. So, this 24" bulb fits a 30" light fixture (which in turn is intended for 20 gallon long; 29 gallon; 37 gallon tanks), and these T8 lights, although thinner than standard fluorescent tubes, have pins that fit in standard fluorescent fixtures.

Among the less expensive light systems, this Zoo Med T8 bulb is great. The tube is much more effective than the standard fluorescent tube. This is especially true as long as you select the correct plants (Java Moss, Anubias, Hornwort, Anacharis etc.) for less light (especially if you have a deeper tank). My plants chosen for low lighting are doing well with these bulbs, but when I tried to grow plants with greater light requirements under these Zoo Med tubes I found I had to transfer the plants back to their original, better lit tanks as they were not doing as well as before.

Not good for aquarium. I tried this for my planted 30 gallon tank, but it gave off poor color, dull looking fish and plants. Much happier to spend a few extra dollars on another brand.

This was a really good price, and was nice that it fit into the stock light on my tank. However, my plants really didn't like this light. They all died, and I am incredibly disappointed. I'm just going to use the regular florescent bulbs for now. Which made the tank look nicer in my opinion. This Zoo Med bulb brought out the red in the tank, which I didn't like. I prefer the cool colors, and the regular flourescent had more of a blue light effect as opposed to the red.

Pennplax Aquarium Air-Vac Gravel Cleaner

The way this works is, you hook it up to an air pump, and when you hold it just right in the water, the air bubbles go up the tube and draw some water with it. The water spills into a filter, collecting the debris.

I bought this hoping I could replace a messy weekly water change with a slow drip, daily water top-offs and regular gravel vacuuming (sort of a poor man's continuous water change system). Unfortunately, this vacuum doesn't provide much suction, so you have to dig the end down into the gravel and try to catch any bits floating away to make this work.

The filter really does catch dirt and debris, but compared to my regular water change kit (the one with a hose that you screw onto a faucet), the process is very slow and not as effective. With the water change kit, the suction is so powerful that it knocks up a cloud of dusty water inside the "vacuum tube". You will get no such satisfaction with this Penn-Plax.

I have the regular size and oversized for my 2 small(not tiny) dogs. These are great! They are comfortable, sturdy and le my dogs look out the window and curl up and sleep on long drives. Get the versions with a drawer. It is worth the extra $10. The drawer is long so it holds food, toys, leashes etc. I thought they were expensive but when I set out to make my own it would have cost almost as much for the materials. These loo like they will last a long time One of them is a couple of years old and its cover has washed up a little fuzzy, but that is ok. The bed part of the foam wasn't as cushiony so I added a piece of memory foam under the cover and it is as good as new.

If your dogs are larger than "toy" size I would get the oversized regardless of how little they weigh. Your dog will aprreciate the roomier size! Amazon had the best priceseven better than ebay!

I have two very wiggly and cranky dachshunds who love to ride on someone's lap in the car. I have tried other containment products, and either my dogs could twist out of them, or they would whine and wail because they couldn't be up front and look out the windows. They both love this Lookout car seat! It's plush and roomie (the medium is perfect for two mini-doxies) and they no longer have issues seeing outside in the backseat. It works perfectly with their Puppia vest harnesses, so I didn't have to force them in an uncomfortable custom harness. Most importantly, they are safer in the event of an accident. The seat is very well made and comfortable for the dogs. Every car seat I've priced at the petstore is so hard, I can't imagine a dog enjoying that! I like that the cover is removable in case it gets dirty and the pull-out storage drawer is a great place to stuff their leashes so I am not looking for them when we get to our destination. The seat gives my dogs a great boost to see out the window, which is a huge bonus in keeping them from fussing. Installing it is a snap. You take the seatbelt in your car and run it across the raised back of the Lookout. It clipped right into place on the first try and has been snug. Even when my dogs first fought it, the seatbelt stayed fast. Removal is as easy as undoing the seatbelt and taking it out.

Your dog may be able to jump from the Lookout onto the seat of your car though. The strap that connects the seatbelt to the dog's harness adjusts to very short, but it slides back and forth along the seatbelt if you don't safety pin it in place. I found that having two dogs clipped in at once using a leash coupler often prevents one of them from bailing. Worst case, if one jumps out they are still attached to the seatbelt by their coupler and harness in the event of an accident. I greatly recommend this product if you have a dog that normally travels on a lap. It's the next best thing and you'll have great peace of mind.

Tuffy, my Dachshund, loves car rides. He is a rescue that I got in November 2009, so I try to do as many things as possible to make him happy in his new home. So every day he gets to go for a car ride to check the mail, go to the market or whatever.

Before getting this seat Tuffy would love to sit on my lap. While that's not illegal yet (the Governator vetoed a bunch of laws that the "no dogs on laps" law was appended, so it did not pass.)

Anyway, I had my eye on the Lookout 2 seat for about a month. A couple days ago I took the plunge (Was about $125 with tax at a local pet store. Ouch).

Bonus Tip: I got the deluxe model that includes a plastic slide out drawer in the base. It's about the size of a shoe box and is covered, when closed, with the black quilt material covering the base. I recommend you get the model with the drawer because it holds a lot of stuff and it's handy to keep everything in one spot instead of all over the car floor. In Tuffy's drawer I have an extra leash, treats, pee pads and his travel first aid kit (eye flush, gauze bandages, iodine, etc.)

Bonus Tip: I placed a pee pad and small towel on the base (floor) of the seat so to keep the beautiful wool lining clean. Although the cover is washable, it's far easier to simply change the pee pad and towel.

I have a MINI Cooper and I bought the medium sized seat. (Tuffy the wiener dog is about 18" long, not counting nose and tail, so I did not want him bending his back since Dachshund's have delicate spines. I tried a small and while Tuffy fit fine, he did not have the spread out room that the medium provided.

The medium is so large that it takes up the entire passenger seat, but I did not care since the point of this is to use the passenger for Tuffy, not Tuffy and a human passenger. :)

The seat installs as advertised. Literally in 30 seconds it is set up. You simply place it on the passenger seat and pull the car's seat belt across the pet seat so that the strap that normally crosses your waist is set across the slot cut into the rear of the seat. This makes a very secure connection for the pet seat.

Bonus Tip: My car has the ability to turn off the passenger air bag. I made sure that the air bag is off when Tuffy is in his seat.

After fastening the car's seat belt to the Lookout 2 you then wrap around the included strap to the waist strap part of the seatbelt. The other end of the strap has a clip that you connect to your dog's harness. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO THIS, ATTACH THE DOG'S HARNESS TO THE LEAD OR STRAP THAT COMES WITH THIS SEAT! Why?

When the dog is "strapped" to the car's seatbelt he can move around, but only within the seat. So the dog does not go running around, he remains in the seat. It only took about an hour in his seat after which Tuffy stopped trying to jump out of the seat and into my lap where he used to sit on car rides. Moreover, if you slam on the brakes, because the seat is secured with the seat belt and the dog is secured to the seat belt with the strap, everything stays put on sudden stops.

Also, I have a convertible MINI. Imagine the horror if I slammed on the brakes and Tuffy went flying out the car. So to prevent his from happening I leave the passenger window up when Tuffy is in his seat. With him connected to the seat belt that provides even more security on sudden stops. (Make sure that your seatbelt is working properly by jerking it. Do this to see that the seatbelt locks when there's sudden stops.

As said above, get the model with the plastic slide out drawer, it's extremely handy. Before this I used to have Tuffy's travel essentials spread out all over the car. Now, the most important items are in one place (treats, dog first aid kit, spare leash, poop bags, bully sticks, two additional pee pads).

Actual Use

Tuffy took to his new seat like a fish to water. The first thing he did was start to chew the foam and wool, as most dogs would do. I stopped him and after a few "Tuffy NO!" he got distracted with the joy of being able to see all around him, so he stopped the chewing.

I can tell Tuffy loves the seat because he looks around a lot and when he wants to rest he lays down and rests his head on the seat edge. And he is happy because he can face me and be close, like he wants to be on rides. When he is facing me, his head is about at shoulder level to me and about 18" from my head. So it's easy to pet him as I drive and he gets his fix that he needs every so often.

Bonus Tip: I have a thick, plush bath towel that I keep between the pet and car seat. When Tuffy wants I cover him in the seat with the towel. He loves that when after playing in the park he wants to crash and check for cracks in his eyelids. The seat has high sides, it's wool and the towel adds to making him feel warm, comfortable and secure.

All in all this is an excellent product. The dog loves the view the seat gives him and the seat is way safer than the dog sitting on an unpadded passenger seat (the Lookout 2's foam padding gives far more protection for the dog than if all you are doing is strapping your pooch to a seatbelt.

Bonus Comment: It's a laugh riot when Tuffy is sitting in his seat. This is because the seat puts him at window level to where everyone can see him. People in cars and even pedestrians go nuts when they see this cute wiener dog sitting in his plush "throne." Literally at every stoplight people wave at Tuffy, smile and some people even talk to him. Often times people don't see that the light has changed to green because drivers are busy "flirting" with Tuffy. LOL.

So if you get one of these be prepared to be the center of attention on the road. If you don't like that then you better have your windows tinted. :)

Lee's 5-1/2 Original Undergravel Filter, 7-1/2-Inch by 15-Inch

I use this size in my 5.5 gallon betta tank and a larger model in my 50 gallon along with a hang on back filters and the water is crystal clear. The only reason I mark them down is that their replacement cartridges are frequently ill-fitting and tough to replace. I'm not sure if there's some secret to this or if mine are just badly molded parts but every so often I have this problem. You can use them without the cartridges and as long as you have a hang on back or other filtration you'll be fine.

It was difficult to put together. The little clear o-rings were very stubborn. In the end, it was annoying to get in and didn't really do what I wanted. Of course, I wasn't sure I wanted an undergravel filter. I'm pretty sure my opinion isn't worth much on this product. Just stretch out the o-rings before you try to fit them on. :)

AQUABELLA Salt Water Treatment

I really didnt believe this would work. I have a 150 gallon saltwater tank and have battled nitrate since I got it 3 years ago. I also have PH problems and the algae is out of control. I was doing a water change every month, which is 30 gallons each time. I put the initial dose into the tank in April, and the final today. My water is very clear and my nitrates went down in the 1st week. My PH stays stabilized and although I still have algae, its not as bad as it used to be. My tank was technically too big for this but it has still worked great. Oh, and I have not done any water changes since April and have not lost 1 fish, and 1 of my snails just laid eggs on the glass today which has never happened before. I plan on doing a water change in a few months and then doing this all over again about a month after that. I dont understand how it can not work for anyone, unless their water is already close to perfect.

This really is amazing. I have treated my water with all of the appropriate treatments, but still suffered from cloudy water in both my aquariums. I just used the 3rd treatment out of the 4 day pack. Last night, my 10 gallon aquarium was already crystal clear. My 20 gallon aquarium is almost clear, but it started out cloudier than the smaller one. By the second day, I was seeing dramatic improvement in the clarity of the water. Both aquariums smelled a bit, and the smell is completely gone, also. I can't wait to see what the water looks like after the 4th day (tomorrow). The water in both tanks is already drastically improved. I could barely see my fish before in my smaller tank, and now I can already see them from the other room. This stuff definitely is all it's cracked up to be! I will definitely continue using it, each year. Awesome product! I spent a ton of money on the cheap bottles of water clarifier, and compared to this, they were definitely a big waste of money!!

My daughter's jellyfish tank has had major problems since she got it... Nitrites off the chart, PH all unbalanced, and Nitrates dangerously high too.

Been fooling with water changes with no luck. We were simply not able to bring them down.

The jellyfish were not doing so hot... sinking to the bottom instead of hanging out in the middle of the tank like happy jellyfish do.

The biggest problem with jellyfish is that is almost impossible not to overfeed them... you have to aim a pipette loaded with frozen brine at their underside and 'spoon feed' them...

We have 2 hermit crabs and 3 cleaner snails to try and keep things under control, but it was still not doing the job.

Asking an 11 year old to look after the tank was not working and it was fast become a 1 hour a day job for me...

Long story short... this stuff is amazing. I put tube 1 on day 1... tube 2 on day 2... and finally tube 3 this morning. I just checked the nitrites and they are perfect. absolutely no nitrites. Nitrates are normal. PH is normal. Specific Gravity is still normal.

Wow! If these results hold, I am a convert. If I can truly go even 6 months without changing water, I will have saved a ton of $$ just in that instant saltwater stuff alone. Not to mention the headache!!

For some reason, the company changed the "size" reading on this product. I was able to figure out what I needed and ordered them. They are easy to exchange in the pump and less of a hassle than those bags you must fill yourself. Depending on how many critters you have in your tank, they can last anywhere from one to two weeks. I used them in a tank containing fish and frogs and they cleaned just fine. These were shipped very fast also.

This skimmer is great for the price. It's not as fancy as some but it does a better job than some that are twice the price. If your looking for extras look elsewhere but if your looking for a good functioning low price you found it. The only thing I would consider changing is the lack of instruction. If you dont have a decent knlodge of how a skimmer works or how to "tune" it some help would be a good thing. Otherwise within 24 hours i had a nice dark thick sludge in the cup, to me thats all I neede to see to give this a good review.

This protein skimmer initially does a good job but the pump is very cheap and breaks easily. Mine broke after just a few monthes and I just got off the phone with BestChoice and they told me that you can't replace the pump. So now I have a 100 dollar paper weight. Which is a shame because for the short time it worked it did a good job. My suggestion is spend a little more and get a protein skimmer that has readily available replacement parts.

the system it is sound if you can find ways to calibrate it it took me 2 weeks to get this thing to work properly when it works it works great. don't be mad if it overflows all the time. it takes time to calibrate it. once it's working properly after you clean it out do not adjust it. I learned the hard way.

This skimmer far exceeded my expectation . It was very easy to set up . I've had it for a couple of weeks and I've had to clean out the skimmer cup a few times already. This thing actually started collecting skimmate within hours of assembly. This is a great value for the job it does. I would and have recommended this to all salt water hobbyists I know.

So far the skimmer works great. I only gave it four stars because of the design. The U shape design for the pump to the skimmer seems cheap. When the pump goes out I will replace it with one I can sit on the side and run it straight in. Other than that this was a great buy so far.

Zilla Fresh Air Non-Locking Screen Clips, 2-Pack

I bought these for a snake cage and they are extremely difficult to attach to the zilla screen. Stupid to think that Zilla would make clips that fit their screens. Once I finally got them on the screen with pliers and a friend's help, they didn't work. The flimsy metal allows the lid to be pushed up without difficulty from a young corn snake. He is able to push his lid up unless I put books on top, but that looks tacky. So I invested in these clips and I'm still using the books. The clips are a waste of time and money. I'm trying to return them and I guess I'll just continue to have books on my snake cage.

No way these things are going to keep my snake in. They are cheap and flimsy and come unsnapped with very little effort.

The clips fit our screen and keep the lid in place. When our snake gets bigger and stronger, it would probably be better to get another pair of clips to hold down the screen at all four corners. For now, these clips are doing the job.
