After a couple weeks of using Sentry Natural Defense, natural flea shampoo for cats and kittens, my cats fleas did reduce in amount but my cats skin started becoming very scabbed from him scratching constantly. He now has no fleas but still continues to scratch and cause himself open flesh wounds. I do not know if this product is the cause but he didn't have nearly as bad wounds before the use of this product. I have a turkish van, so I dont know if white cats are more susceptible to skin irritation or not but I know his skin wasn't as bad before. I don't recommend this product to anyone. just to be on the safe side use advantage drops or frontline, just make sure the packages are brand new b/c if they're not then the treatments usually aren't as effective. I used to work at a vet so I know if they've been on the shelf longer that they don't work as well.Want Sentry Natural Defense Flea Shampoo Cat 16-Ounce Discount?
**********EXTREMELY IMPORTANT**************THIS PRODUCT'S MAIN INGREDIENT IS PEPPERMINT OIL.
THE ASPCA WARNS THAT PEPPERMINT IS POISONOUS TO CATS
**********EXTREMELY IMPORTANT**************
From the ASPCA's web site: (google ASPCA and peppermint for source Amazon does not allow hyperlinks)
"If ingested, the peppermint plant and its oil could indeed potentially cause harm to your cat. Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and effects such as gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression and even liver damage could occur if ingested in significant quantities. Some peppermint oil formulations also contain aspirin derivatives, which could result in additional toxicity. Furthermore, if inhalation of the volatile oil were to occur, aspiration pneumonia may be possible. Based on this, we would not recommend using peppermint leaves or oil in areas where your cat is allowed access."
My guess is you put this junk on your cat and now it's freaking out and you're wondering anyone else has had the same experience. Yes, this product is AWFUL. DO NOT USE IT.
No, I am not some hyper-sensitive pet owner. Yes, I do realize that anything you use to kill fleas probably has some potential for side effects. I am not talking some minor irritation. I am simply floored that the manufacturer could be this stupid to put something like this on the market.

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 10-Inch
Tank info: 15g column, Walstad setup, Co2 injection, fully planted, HOB filter, 10" Rayfuge light.Great little aquarium light which i use on the refugium below. Small row of blue surrounded by white LEDs. The switches on each end turn on one set or the others. Only has a single plug so you can't setup it set on times to cycle through daw, day, evening lighting. I just use it opposite to the main tank lights. The light is strong enough and keeps my mangrove plants growing and happy. Definitely well worth the cost. Light, portable and durable. It fits perfect on my ProFlex Sump Model 1.
Only wish it has dual plug to cycle lighting.

I was looking for a LED alternative to modify my 28G Nano cube from a HID lamp to LED. I purchased two lights and these 10" lights fit the space available and are saving me a fortune in electricity now that I am using a few watts compared to 175w. Also the tank seems to be much clearer now that the light balance is different, corals are happy and the color of the fish is great. I am also looking forward to saving on the summers electric bill as I will not be running the chiller this year since these lights covert little to heat.Friday, August 1, 2014

Exo Terra Turtle Pebbles, Large
Buy Exo Terra Turtle Pebbles, Large Now
The Exo Terra Turtle Pebbles are a great addition to my turtle tank. They look really nice and because they are the real thing they make our turtle's enviroment genuine and eco friendly in appearance and environmental safety. The turtle seems to really like them too...he often swims down to move the pebbles to get his food that sank to the bottom...and, he sit down there a lot too...I think he likes the feel of the soft, rounded stones and pebbles on his underside...! ...???I'll probably be getting more of these when I move my turtle to a larger tank.
I recommend these to anyone for turtles, fresh water fish or other critters.
PWN.I loved this turtle gravel! At home, I have 2 red eared sliders and the gravel looked great in my tank! It was a bit pricey, but if you are willing to dedicate your money to the turtles,it was worth it! Actually, the bag was quite heavy at first, but I was surprised at how it fit in my tank and it looked GREAT. I would recommend this to anyone and I would be buying more soon.I underestimated the size off the bag. You really need to get a couple bags. I like the pebbles, but they are so expensive. I probably should have looked around a little more before purchasing. I didn't realize what I would need.

Marineland LED Aquarium Light, 11-Inch
This Marineland LED 11-inch Aquarium Light is so far so good. I have a 29-gallon tank that's 30" long, and this 11-inch lamp really does do a good job lighting up the whole tank, just as it claims on the package ("for aquariums up to 30 inches long"). This is great news, because I didn't want to spend more money for a lamp that runs the entire length of the aquarium.
The light really does look natural, and brings out the colors on both my fish and my artificial plants. From what I understand, however, this lamp does not provide the right light waves for planted aquariums, so don't get it if you have live plants.
The lamp also has a "night mode"...it's a smaller amount of light (which happens to be blue) which looks cool at night...but if you choose to use this, you'll have to manually switch it every night (and back to day mode every morning). The lamp does not automatically switch between day and night modes. So, needless to say, the night mode is sort of useless for that reason. I always have the day mode turned on, and have plugged the lamp into my own timer so that the fish can have darkness at night.I have 3, soon to be 6, two-and-a-half gallon aquariums in which I have my Male Bettas. This light is PERFECT for that size tank. The light would not be bright enough for anything over 5 gallons. If you are a Betta lover and enjoy collecting Bettas, don't hesitate to use this for their single tanks!

I got this light with a 30 gallon kit and after 8 months the power connection rusted and the whole thing quit working. Sealing the area where the plug goes into the black case may avert this problem.Read Best Reviews of Marineland LED Aquarium Light, 11-Inch Here
A perfect fit for our 10 gallon hex. The light is like daylight and there's a blue light too. The switch design for going between the two light types and off could use some improvement, but otherwise it was just what we were looking for.Probably not strong enough for a 10 gallon planted aquarium. I use a double bright marineland LED on a planted 10 gallon. I think two of these may also work for a planted 10 gallon. It may be good enough for a small no-plant aquarium. Note that the power supply attaches to the long edge. That means that it may be hard to put two of these parallel but of course you can put them end to end. Otherwise this is functional sleek design. Fairly small size for the amount of light it creates.Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Aquarius AQ10000G 1-Gallon Glow Fish Globe Bowl Aquarium with Full Hood and 12 LED Glofish Lights
WARNING: UPDATE: 3 WEEKS LATER:
I have purchased in total, three of these aquariums. And All three aquariums within 3 weeks have clouded up permanently on the inside of the bowl, beginning at the water line, and spreading through out the bowl. I am unable to view the fish when they swim at the upper level of the bowl. I only rinse the bowl out with warm water. No abrasives are used in cleaning the acrylic. I can actually feel the coating of the acrylic on the inside of the bowl has deteriorated where it is cloudy. I do not recommend this bowl at all. There are 4 or 5 different light settings for this fishbowl, and I normally only use the LED white light. I put my betta in here, and he loves it! It's much larger than his old bowl and so far I've had no problems with it. It's easy to clean, easy to assemble and it really looks nice.
I'm not sure if it says anywhere on here, but this bowl is plastic. I was hoping for glass, but it's much lighter to carry with water in it, and still looks nice.I wanted a bowl for my betta fish that had a light and a lid, but no filter. This one was perfect! I only turn the light on once every other day, but after a couple of months, the "first" light the white one burned out. The others are still working fine, though. I love that there is a small hole for feeding my fish, but enough protection on top of the bowl so that my kitties can't get in it. I also like that it's lightweight for carrying, yet not too flimsy. Very pleased with this!!EDITED::::: I have to change this review because I've owned the 1.5 gallon version of this exact bowl since this past summer. Although my betta was happy in this bowl, it did not last more than 6 months. Despite being easy to maintain and easy to clean, the bowl itself is plastic. About 3 weeks ago I noticed the plastic started to become cloudy. I thought it was just algae so I emptied and cleaned it but could not scrub it clear again. It got worse over the following weeks despite water changes and today I took it and emptied it again and tried cleaning with a variety of things to make it clear again white vinegar, a baking soda paste, rubbing alcohol none of that worked. The bowl is so cloudy that you can barely see through it anymore. I've also noticed in the last week that the green bulbs have burned out, limiting my lighting options. For a bowl that is only 6 months old this is a very short life span. I had said that if my bulbs burned out I'd just purchase another bowl, but instead I picked up a nice, 1.75 gallon GLASS fish bowl at the pet store. Luckily the opening of that bowl will fit this lid so I'm keeping the lid until the rest of the bulbs burn out and then I'm going to purchase a clip on LED light. I'm done with these kits. Not worth it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I own the 1.5 gallon version of this exact bowl. I had my beta in a larger full service tank, but it was just too much upkeep and he didn't seem to like it all that much. I bought this one and he's been living in it for about 5 months now and seems as happy as can be. It's easy to maintain and easy to clean. The bowl itself is plastic and I was afraid it would scratch or stain, but it's still as clear as the day I got it. The only thing I don't like about it is that the lid doesn't give room to put anything with a cord down inside, because there is no room for the cord through the lid. I had my beta in there with no heater, which he had in his tank, and he didn't move for weeks. So one day I got out my power drill and created a little opening in the lid for the cord to my underwater heater, and it has made a huge difference. Now he swims around and is a whole lot more active. So if you're going to use this bowl for a beta, I definitely recommend you get a little creative and find a way to get a heater in there. The lights are my favorite part of this bowl. It illuminates the bowl and my beta's fins so nicely, it's a really nice eye catcher and visitors are always commenting on my cool little beta bowl. I worry that the lights will burn out one day and I won't be able to find replacements, but I like the bowl enough that I will probably just purchase another in that case.I have had this for about a month and it is just perfect on my nightstand. I do have it sitting on a couple of my favorite books so I can see into it better. I watch my little beta every night! The plastic has not gotten cloudy like someone else said, but I figure if it does, I can find a glass bowl that will fit the top. It works for me!

Aqueon Flex LED Aquarium Bubble Wand, 21-Inch, Blue
But like any hobby as long as your interest is there things tend to grow and change for the better. That said I've found one of the most inexpensive and creative way to make subtle to dramatic changes to most any tank is by using up lighting as the old saying goes "lighting is everything"
When Marineland came out with their LED wands I had them in many tanks in different numbers and colors, mostly the Lunar blue and white. The wands were just ok as they have a tendency to release and float to the top and the LED bulbs are quite dim.
Enter the Via aqua wands much better. They're weighted and have stronger suction cups so they stay put, the LED bulbs are brighter but the air tube is rather weak and thin and like the Marineland they clog easy.
When I came across these bendable Led air wands by Aqueon I could just imagine the possibilities, circles, half circles, quarter moon. Building multi layered air columns and so on. My hunch was right and these wands are sensational.
The build quality is the best yet so far the main tube is stronger so you can feel free to bend these into virtually any shape you like. The outflow is generous and creates a wall of bubbles in an even beautiful flow.
The main housing is a pliable rubber and each LED is incredibly bright, in fact a little too bright. It's easy too adjust this by adding a lamp dimmer if you want a nice range of adjustment to the brightness. I would say this applies really only to the white as the Lunar blue has a much more softer hue and is closer to a true Lunar blue as you would find with over head LED lighting systems that offer this feature.
Bending these around your tank decor adds tons of visual appeal as well as great extra oxygen via the increased aeration one of the best things you can do for your fish.
I'm running a bunch of these in different sized tanks from 55's to 125 and up and find them to be a wonderful addition to every single one of them. I think any hobbyist will love these.
5 Fins Up!I purchased 2 of these and they went in the same tank. They make great bubble wands but with 1 the lights stop working all together after 2 weeks. The other one lasted 3 weeks and the lights stopped working. Again, these make great bubble wands but if I just wanted a bubble wand I would have paid $9 bucks each and got just that.. a bubble wand. However, when they did work I loved them but for the money these cost and they last less than a month? No way not again.

I am so happy with this purchase! I have put it in my 29 gallon aquarium and it provides a really nice stream of bubbles. The best part of course is the light. I got this because I wanted to have glow fish in my tank, and the blue LED light at night really makes them glow. It is gorgeous! It provides a nice ambient light that isn't distracting when we watch movies (fish tank is in our family room). I highly reccommend getting this prior to setting up your tank. I got mine after I had already put the gravel in and found it very difficult to get the suction cups situated.Read Best Reviews of Aqueon Flex LED Aquarium Bubble Wand, 21-Inch, Blue Here
So far so good. Looks great. Been in the aquarium for over a month with no problems. Very pretty night light, I leave it on 24/7. I hope it continues to work. I will edit this review If something changes over time. I am Leary of led products not always lasting for a long time.Want Aqueon Flex LED Aquarium Bubble Wand, 21-Inch, Blue Discount?
I spent a great deal of time deciding between this bubble wand and LED bubble wands of different brands. After reading many reviews, I settled on this one by Aqueon and couldn't be more happy. When I first received this bubbler, I took the water level down to about half and pushed my sand out of the way and suction cupped the bubbler to the bottom of my tank. This was somewhat difficult to do as my sand would get in the way, but I figure having more common gravel wouldn't be as problematic. This brings me to another difficulty in had, which isn't the fault of the product but rather my decision to go with sand rather than gravel. After burying my bubbler in sand, just up to the base of the LEDs, I was very satisfied with the look. However, after a day or two, the bubbles moved the sand enough to bury the LEDs.
After mounting the bubbler to the back of my tank just above the sand rather than in the sand, I haven't had a single problem. I have some rocks in front of the bubbler to hide the LEDs from view and haven't had any issue with sand covering the LEDs. I highly recommend this product.

Snoozer Luxury Cozy Cave Pet Bed
The result? Max loves it. He immediately figured out how to use it. And now he is in it all the time. And instead of sleeping while curled up in a ball, he sleeps sprawled out inside of this pillow. All you really see is his nose or tail sticking out.
I really have not had it long enough to speak to how easy it is to clean or how it wears. But so far so good.
Here is a video of the first time he came in from outside and climbed into the pillow:
I have two XL beds for my 45 pound vizslas. The dogs *love* them and the XL is plenty large (the Large is not quite big enough). If my two dogs were more snuggly with each other, they could both fit in one XL. The exterior (I have the suede-like material, not the canvas cotton) is nice but the interior fleece lining is low quality fleece. I have had one bed for about two years, and the fleece is now worn down and scratchy. The cover is washable but not in a regular agitator-style washer. I have to take them to the laundrymat and use a front-loader. Another improvement I would like to see is a waterproof liner to protect the dog bed insert. Currently I am using a twin size mattress protector that I sort of wrap around the bed and then put the cover on. It works okay but is awkward to use.
Buy Snoozer Luxury Cozy Cave Pet Bed Now
Researched the Cozy Bed for my cold-natured "burrower". First thing I did was take some of the foam out of it...and it was so easy. The bed has a zipper so you can take off and wash and the filler was in a zipper holder so all I had to do was unzip to take out some of the filler. Then I put her in there and she hasn't come out of it since last night. She would strongly recommend this bed to everyone out there! Also, I was pondering what size to get. She is a terrier mix and about 14 pounds, 20" long. I bought the small and and she can stretch out in it or roll into a ball!Read Best Reviews of Snoozer Luxury Cozy Cave Pet Bed Here
I was really happy to see this bed, and the dog seemed to take to it quickly too. Problem is that my dog is a Dachshund who loves to burrow (reason that I bought this bed) and at first it seemed great. I moved it to my room and put it on my bed where he sleeps at night and when he got in, he moved toward the back and laid down, and that's when I stopped liking this bed. When he tried to curl up near the back, he ended up rolling the bed so that it pointed up at around a 45 degree angle, and then it fell off of my bed with him in it. Dogs who like to burrow also like to have their backs against something, like the back on a dog bed. In this bed, the possibility exists for the dog to get back too far and tip the bid since unlike many foam-form beds, there are no sides nor back.
So, I fixed the problem, and this is how: I took out the cushion first; then I cut a couple of long strips of double-wall cardboard, around 5 1/2 inches tall and about 2/3 the circumference of the bed. I stuck them in to form a ring around the inside of the bed, and then put the cushion back in. Success! He now can lay in the bed with his back against the new wall, no tipping. I also find that he is now stretching out more since he isn't afraid of the tipping.
Note to manufacturer: this is an easy fix and you should be providing that ring.Unfortunately only bought one and two of my dogs just LOVE it! As soon as one gets out the other gets in. This is a high quality bed and I would have bought another if they wouldn't have raised the price by $30!!! SHEESH

Aquarium Systems Maxi Jet 600 Powerhead
- Perfect for freshwater or marine.
In short, it acts like a maxi-jet!
This review might sound negative, but it really isn't. This is my go-to pump when I need a small, cheap, reasonably reliable pump to move water from one place to another. They mix saltwater, transfer it from the mixing barrel to the tanks, feed media reactors, etc.

These are my fall back pumps, as I've used them for over 20 years with marine (saltwater) aquariums. I've used them in sumps, corals, plants, fish (always with a strainer attached) and with maintenance, they have lasted on average 2 years each. Will continue to buy them. One of my marine enthusiasts also had me try Rio pumps (when they came out years ago). They had sufficient output for sumps, but they also had electrical issues. Not a good thing in saltwater, since it is a good conductor of electricity, let alone for my corals and more delicate shrimp and fish :(
I removed all Rios and went back to these pumps. The sump pump I have is a larger different model, but love the Maxi Jets. This is a powerful pump. I also have the 1200. The 600 has PLENTY of power. I use the 600 on the inside aquarium and the 1200 to power the outdoor pond/water feature. It is quiet.

EcoPlus Submersible Pump - 633 gph
So far so good I'll update my review if I experience any issues. This pump replaced one of unknown GPH which was oil lubricated and had leaked into the fountain. I chose this pump because I wanted something that had high GPH for the watts consumed as I run my pump 24/7.
After several months its working great. I have it enclosed in a filter box and I chlorinate the pond to keep out algae. The output is good but not great, but since I have nothing to compare the 633gph to, I can't accurately comment. This is well suited for my 4' x 6' x 1.5' Deep pond and could easily handle double the size.
Seems like a well made product for the price.

EHEIM Jager Aquarium Thermostat Heater 75W
The Glass is nice and thick and I have no problems submerging it.I have had quite a lot of heaters for my various fishtanks but this is DEFINITELY worth the price. It has a great range of temperatures that you can choose from to heat water up to. It's completely submersible and the cable is protected all the way up until the wall socket, for those very long or deep tanks. A light tells you when it's on and shuts off when the water doesn't need to be heated. The heater itself is a long cylinder and has a holder with suction cups that are all removable so you can clean each piece. After almost one year, though, the suction cups are giving out and need to be replaced.

I have a 29G tank but fill to 2/3, and I put it next to my filter. The water temperature never goes under the set temperature. It's accuracy amazed me.For a heater that is supposed to be top of line, I didn't expect to be fighting it for days like an old heater from the 70's. whether the indicator dial is calibrated or not, the heater should shut off at a lower temp when you dial it down two degrees. I cannot get my tank below 81and the dial is now down to 75. I calibrated it to two thermometers, one laser and one aquarium standard type. Heater still coming on at 80 and taking it up to 82. This is all very unfortunate because the workmanship is good, although not as good as I expected from a German manufacturer.
