Pondmaster 02940 40-Watt Ultra Violet Light Pond Water Clarifier

I have medium sized decorative pond that gets harsh western sun from about noon until sunset. Ironically, the algae got worse in winter. Visibility in the pond was down to about 1 inch. It was positively disgusting and it stank.

2 week after putting the Pondmaster UV filter into the pond, the water was clear as crystal.

However, as the manufacturer indicates, "filter" isn't the proper terminology. It's a sterilizer. It doesn't eliminate the need for a normal bio filter. This kills the algae and other parasites so the bio filter can remove them from the water. If you have a particularly green pond (as I did) clear the filter pads weekly until you've regained control over the algae.

Again, note that the UV system addresses free algae not the string algae that grows on the sides. It's basic logic if the algae is stuck to the side, then it can't pass through the steriliser to be killed.

Change your filter pads regularly until you've gotten past the 2-3 week period when you're waiting for the pea soup to vanish. All that dead algae needs to be removed. Make sure you get any old leaves out too that will speed things up.

If you don't see results, make sure you have the right wattage, and also adjust the pump to ensure the water isn't moving to fast. Algae cells need about 1-2 full seconds exposure to the lamp to break the cell membrane and kill them.

Bottom line it does PRECISELY what it says.

My UV clarifier is probably 10 or 11 months old and it's already dead. The bulb burned out about 6 weeks ago, well short of its 1 year expected life, and was replaced. Last weekend I noticed the light was dead. I replaced the $80 bulb, plugged it back in, and nothing. The UV clarifier is dead. Typical. Can't anyone many anything that actually works anymore?

It's also annoying that the input and output tubes have such a tiny diameter. I think they went out of their way to find a size that was difficult to convert to more standard sized tubes.

EDIT: I was very mad when I wrote the above. The next day I contacted Pondmaster to complain, but they quickly began to resolve my problem. They sent out a new ballast which arrived in a few days and a complimentary bulb. The new ballast works fine. They made this process extremely easy for me and they didn't need to. This was an example of how a company can turn a bad situation into a favorable one because after this experience I wouldn't think twice about purchasing another Pondmaster product.

I have the product a 1 because it broke when it shouldn't have, but after seeing their customer service in action I'd like to change it to a 4 but I can't. I won't change it to a 5 because I still find the UV's tiny in/out pipes annoying ;)

I have used the 40 watt Pondmaster units for several years. Generally they do an excellent job of clarifying the water. Three units keep my 6000 gallon pond very clear. However, the ballast is subject to damage because the gasket around the quartz sleeve pushes into a pressure switch at the base of the unit. After using the unit for a few years, the gasket becomes distorted, lets water into the electical fixture, allowing the ballast to burn out. A replacement ballast costs over $100 and is difficult to find. I have a collection of four or five burned out ballasts that can't be repaired. Since bulbs last about two seasons, it generally costs about the same amount to buy a new unit as it does to replace all of the parts (ballast, quartz sleeve, and bulb). Hopefully this is not a deliberate strategy by the company to sell replacemente units, but one has to wonder.

I rarely write a review, but wanted to say a few words that might help anyone thinking about buying this product. The water in my pond looked like pea soup. I did partial water changes and cleaned the filter twice a day, nothing seemed to help. Finally I bought this, although I was kind of a skeptic. The first few days I didn't think it was doing anything, but as the days went by it got better and better. After a couple of weeks the water was crystal clear. Amazing!

The clarifier does NOT come with attachments to connect it into the pump and into the filter. We took it to the hardware store to figure out what parts we needed to connect it all, so be prepared!!

So let me try to make this story short. I basicly got this UV sterilizer 3 1/2 to 4 years ago used from a friend of mine that owns a pet shop. The previous owner and I invested in the sterilizer for our saltwater aquariums. The unit was pretty new, I think it had been used for a year or less. Used the unit for my 90 gallon saltwater tank for approx 3 1/2 to 4 years with really no problems. I even moved a year ago and hooked the unit back up to my tank with no problems. Every once in a while i would have to tap on it alittle when I plugged it back in after doing a water change on my aquarium. 6-8 months ago I notice that I had small puddles of water around my aquarium on tile floor or stuff under my tank was wet( I have unit sitting ontop of my home made wet dry filter under my tank. Thought at first it was just water splashing from where it pours into wet dry filter. Negative,noticed one of the halos on unit was leaking alittle. At this time it was just a constant drip of water, which over months increased to a small squirt of water at times. Took care of that by placing something over leak where water would drip/stream down instead of squirting up and weting my tile floor. Have notice increase in water on my tile floor last couple weeks. Got off work one morning to find that the halo had started squirting so much water out of aquarium that the water level got low and my water pump could not ciculate water in aquarium. This caused my saltwater fish to have a lack of oxygen over who know how many hours!! Almost lost several fish, ended up that only my lunar wrasse died from inccident!! I am upset, but I did get 3 1/2-4 good years with this sterilizer!! So does anyone know how to fix the halos to keep them from leaking or should I just buy a new sterilizer??? Halos are not cracked and it is just 1 halo that needs repairing. Any ideas?????? Over all a good product.

biOrb Knock Down Stand - Black

I paid $27.61 for this stand from amazon.com brand new. It is the Executive Wooden Stand from Reef One (biOrb) that retails from $85 to $99. I am giving it 3 stars mainly for the low price offered by amazon.com. For that price ($27.61) it is a great little stand. But if you pay anything over $30 for this stand, you are getting ripped off.

There's not much to the stand at all. There are no compartments for you to put any supplies in. The stand feels cheaply made. However, putting it together took minutes and was easy despite lack of good intructions.

Overall, I am pleased at getting it for such a low price. I didn't want to spend alot on a stand because starting a new aquarium can be pricey and for me, the stand was low on the list of important things I needed. I would not recommend this stand for anything less than $30. You're better off buying a nice wooden stand for under $99 that you can actually put supplies and all in and would probably be a bit more sturdier.

Aquarius Aq25000 Aquarius 2-1/2 Corner Tank 2-1/2-Gallon Aquarium Kit

I have a version of this tank and there is no need to cut a space in the hood to accomodate a filter; as the description says, it's an internal filter, not a traditional HOB (hang on back) filter. My filter is slightly different than the one pictured, but internal filters generally have suction cups on the back to attach the filter inside the tank, directly to the back side works best with mine. Hope this helps.

Overall the tank quality is nice. The hood is ok but fits cheaply upon the top of the tank (kinda loose and slightly warped, which could correct itself over time I suppose). My major complaint however is that the description put the height at 11.2". I have 12" clearance in the place where I want it and with the hood the height is actually 13"... not 11.2. I thought this measurement must be for the tank alone w/o the hood, but nope... the tank is 10.5. So anyhow, either I return it or find a new spot. Also thought it was misleading to call it a "corner" tank which to me implies that the point of it will fit into a corner leaving a flat front to admire your fish...no... the flat side goes against the wall or corner and you view the fish through the pointy end of the triangle if you can imagine what I mean. My last complaint is that there is no instruction on how to adapt the hood to allow the filter... no one else seems to have complained about this so perhaps we were just missing some instructions. It is our first tank so maybe we just don't have the basic knowledge needed to fit the filter on? I don't know. I looks like you actually have to get a small saw out and cut a back portion of the hood open so that the filter can hang from the back. Otherwise, the hood definitely won't fit snug. I think I'm talking myself out of this tank as I type this... the hunt continues!

I bought this tank for my daughter's gold fish. I was tired of cleaning out the fishbowl all the time so it was time to upgrade to something with a filter.

The tank is big enough for two fish. Maybe three if you push it. Be advised, though, that the filter is probably a little over-powered for this size of tank and creates quite a strong current for the fish to work through to get around. I've started unplugging the filter while I sleep so they can get a break from the current for a while.

My daughter thinks the LED light setup is pretty neat. There are many different color settings to choose from constant color/alternating colors, etc.

I'm not sorry I bought this thing and I'ts not bad for what I spent on it.

I hesitated buying these because I couldn't find any info on the size of the ears. Took a gamble & was happy to find each "piece" is actually a full-sized pig's ear & you get 25 in the package.

I have two Yorkie Poos who love, love, LOVE pigs ears. I really liked TAO tronics but I needed two more lights to completely cover my 150 gallon. Well, I found this light and it looked so much like the TAO Tronics that I took a chance and ordered two of them. Well, the difference is obvious. This light is much brighter than TAO Tronics and has brighter actinic blues. Side by side this light is far superior. Plus, it is dimmable if you need less light. Trust me, I still think TAO tronics is a good light but I believe this light is better and cheaper.

LEDs don't throw off any noticeable heat, controls for white and blue are separate switches and dimmers. All good. Colors of corals, sponges, algaes very striking and poppy under this light. Also needs some skill to hang it securely and look presentable in your living room at the same time. But no regrets here!

This light is amazing, especially for the price. Definitely bright enough for corals I have it turned all the way down for my 29 gallon reef any higher and it was actually burning my corals. Would be better for a larger set up. If you haven't used LED before, it definitely looks different than VHO fluorescent or halide, but not worse for sure.

My aquarium came with a flourescent bulb that was a 'soft white/yellow color'. I didn't like it at all. This new bulb has made a world of diference to the aquarium! The water looks clean and blue and the colors of the fish seem so much brighter and reflective under the new bulb. I definitely recommend this bulb.

I was in love with this light the moment I turned it on. It seems like its not as bright as a daylight bulb but because of the nature of the light the fish and tank in general actually seemed better illuminated. My yellow Labidochromis still look nice but not glaring like they did with the daylight bulb. The blues of the Yellow-tailed Acei are especially enhanced and the Zebra Obliquidens are stunning.

Definitely measures up to the hype. An excellent bulb for African cichlids.

This stuff is awesome. Came in a large mesh bag. I broke that open and used the contents for several add you own media filters and have a lot left over. Plus, there were no broken rings in the bag at all. These ceramic rings seem pretty tuff as I banged them around a bit threading them on nylon string for easy placement and removal from filters. Worth it compared to others.

I got this tank with a betta in mind, and it works perfectly for that purpose. I have no complaints at all about the tank itself--but I do want to give some warnings. A goldfish needs more along the lines of 10 gallons per fish, not 2.65. A betta however will be just fine in this tank. The problem with most fish kits is that they are never big enough for the fish they're made for. Goldfish also need way more filtration, and I will warn you that the filter that comes with this kit is pretty much useless. However, anyone looking for a good, simple betta tank should do absolutely great with this one. Although I haven't tried it myself, the 1.77 gallon variety of this tank would probably be fine too. I'd also recommend getting your own gravel and plant, the gravel is far too cheap and rough, and the silk plant had strings coming off of it that would either float to the top or come dangerously close to getting tangled onto my fish.

This review seems incredibly negative, but believe me, I love the tank and it deserves the four stars--it's just the premise of the kit and the bundled accessories that aren't worth your time. I like it far better than any other similar plastic tanks, and betta kits are the smallest pieces of junk ever. With a little extra effort, you will have no problems keeping a smaller individual fish in this tank. Just please don't try to cram a goldfish into this thing.

I have these for all three of my tanks. You can place them in the grass or turn them upside down and they float on the top of the water.

I have mine floating. Not only do my fish babies find their way into them for protection but it gives cover to the rest of the fish in the tank. When they float and babies are in them, it is easier to catch the babies and/or feed them. I have a tank just for babies so I love how easy it is to put my net under the floating grass and lift the grass to get the babies quickly.

It works ok, except apparently I have a very good hunter in my betta......he has managed to eat all of my babies anyway, it would probably work much better if I took him out of the tank.

I was nervous ordering this stroller kit due to some of the reviews. For added precaution, I called the Amazon customer service once I had added this item to my cart. I have the large Solvit HoundAbout Bicycle trailer and wanted to ensure that I received the appropriate size stroller kit. Although the picture is of the stroller kit for the large bicycle trailer, the order description defaults to the medium sized stroller kit. I clicked the drop-down arrow box and changed it to say Large and then added it to my cart. The customer service rep on the phone was able to verify that I had indeed ordered the large stroller kit and assured me that that's what I would receive. It arrived today and I was thrilled to find that it was the large sized stroller kit as promised and was in perfect condition...no damaged or used-looking parts. The baggies holding the hardware did look a little worn-out (like maybe they had sat on a shelf for quite some time), but nothing was damaged and the pieces looked brand new. I was able to put it together without much trouble. Because the reviews are mixed on this item, I would highly recommend adding the item to your cart and then calling the customer service department to be sure everything is showing up correctly on their end. They can see the item in your cart before you actually purchase it.

Amazon still has strolling kits for the previous model trailer in stock. Sure enough that is what Amazon sent me for my model "ll" trailer. The first clue that something was wrong is that the two-hole bolt pattern of the attachment fitting for the forward centered wheel did not match the bolt hole spacing on the trailer frame. A call to Solvit confirmed that I had the earlier model conversion kit. The Solvit representative was very helpful and was willing to work with me to make the kit work on this trailer at no cost to me. In the end I elected to return this kit to Amazon and get a refund. To Amazon's credit they paid me the cost of shipping to and from my residence; therefore, I was out nothing but my time in this whole transaction.

The okay rating is only because of the failure of Amazon to control its inventory on this product. I ordered the trailer and the conversion kit at the same time and one would think Amazon would realize I needed the model II conversion kit to go with the model II trailer.

About the kit I saw but never used . . . It was of the same high quality I saw on the trailer assembly that I purchased and now use. If it is anything like the the trailer, I imagine this conversion should work well also

I have used this stroller walking on pavement and sidewalks exclusively with one 63 lb dog inside. While this use was frequent over a period of about 6 months, I would in no way qualify it as rough use. That being said, this morning as I was going over a curb, both bolts holding the front wheel assembly in place broke. Concept rates 5...cheap garbage hardware rates 0. Updated: On 26 Mar 2013 Solvit did provide new upgraded bolts after I complained about the product. I would replace the original bolts with grade 8 hardware for about a dollar if you purchase this kit rather than using the original hardware. Increased rating to 3 stars.

We live a couple of blocks from the beach and I have two housecats and wanted to take them SAFELY on a stroll. It was difficult to assemble (I'm a 59-year old female) but we finally did it. The directions are somewhat hard to understand, too. Sadly, the front wheel's rim is bent and I have to return it before we take longer walks, but I'm very pleased with this and the cats seem to enjoy the outtings. I would have given it 5-stars except for the bent rim and the difficulty putting it together.

The Turbo Twist unit is well worth the money. I had quite a few parasites that kept coming back and each time I had to spend the money on medicines to rid of them. It got to be a real pain in the butt. With other UV sterilizers on the market and not sure which one to purchase, I took a gamble and bought the Turbo Twist. I have had the unit about 2 years now and can't think of a time since then that I have had problems with diseases or parasites. The product does what it is intended to do. You must have the appropriate water flow from your filter in order for it to work properly though. I have mine installed on my canister filter and it works excellent. It also comes with a nice bracket system so that you can either use the suction cups or screw it into your aquarium stand. I simply screwed the bracket into my aquarium cabinet on the inside so that it is not visible. I also installed quick-disconnects on each end so that I can clean the unit easily without having to dismantle the entire filtration setup. I hope this information helps your decision-making. I highly recommend!!!

I have owned and used the turbo-twist 6x UV pond sterilizer for 6 months. I've had a lot of difficulty with it, and today it sprang its final leak and is going into the trash. The basic problem is poor quality materials, aggravated by inadequate engineering. Here's what happened:

I used this for a 130gal indoor fishtank. It was mounted under the tank in an equipment enclosure, so any leak potentially can drain the tank through siphoning, even with the pump off. I initially had it mounted in a horizontal position, inline with a 400gal/hour canister filter.

On first install I noticed that the hose fittings are not good: they are supposed to seal the hose by screwing a ring outwards against the hose, squeezing it over a bulge (tang) on the male fitting. However, the ring isn't long enough to achieve this purpose, which is odd. I used high quality Eheim hose and the ring didn't even touch the hose before coming off the threads. Ok fine, I added my own hose clamps and moved on. Next the mounting brackets broke, like almost immediately. They, and most of the rest of the unit, are made of a flimsy and brittle black plastic that breaks under a small amount of stress. The design of the mounting brackets is such that this stress is very likely to occur except possibly under some ideal circumstances (which don't exist in a small under tank space). I jury-rigged my own mounting and kept going.

Within a few weeks the unit had stopped working (as monitored by the indicator light, and the resurgence of algae in the tank). After some investigation I discovered that the UV bulb was not seated properly in the socket. I spent a lot of time and effort working on this, trying to find better ways of seating the bulb, but the metal clip that's supposed to hold it in is...flimsy and weak! Eventually I changed to a vertical mounting position with the socket on the bottom: this is not a manufacturer recommended position, but it's the only way the bulb would stay seated and keep electrical contact. It still went out ocsassionally if it got bumped while cleaning the filters, and then I needed to jiggle it gently to get it to light again.

Today the entire unit started to leak rapidly, which I discovered when a puddle began spreading from under the tank stand. On investigation, the body seal had failed. As I was examining the unit, gently trying to tighten it to reseal, the entire body split: the black plastic housing appears to be even weaker and more brittle now than when installed, maybe due to UV exposure?

I was initially happy that this unit did indeed kill algae, but it caused me a lot of frustration and turned out to be highly unsatisfactory. I recommend avoiding all models in this line.

I HAVE A 240 GALLON FISH TANK THAT I HAVE HAD FOR OVER 20 YEARS. I HAVE FISH LIVE IN THIS TANK MUCH!!!! LONGER THAN ANYONE I KNOW. I HAVE HAD MY TANK UP AND RUNNING WHEN MY STERILIZERS WERE OUT OF COMMISSION AND I SEE A DRASTIC DIFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY OF THE WATER AND THE QUALITY OF THE FISH. I THINK THIS IS A BIT ON THE EXPENSIVE SIDE BUT A GOOD PRODUCT.
