I originally bought this to use as an aquarium ornament; however, it will be used in a plant terrarium instead.

Pros: The actual design is quite nice, as is the size and weight.

Cons: It has the feel of stone and is quite sharp in places, which is why I decided not to use it with living creatures like fish or amphibians. Also, the color/appearance is much more realistic in the picture than in person.

If I hadn't had another way to make use of it (in the plant terrarium) I would have considered returning it.

Stoney River White Aquatic Sand Freshwater and Marine Aquariums, 5-Pound Bag

I bought this so my dragonfish could swim and eat their natural way. While the sand looks beautiful in the tank it floats. I do not know if this is a common problem but it clogged my filter, burning out the motor. The price is not bad for a small bag of sand for how good it looks. I would research or spend a tad more money in order to get stuff that does not float like gravel.

It's the ornament in the picture with a tube glued to the back. Would have been nice to see that before buying it. I mean I didn't expect much out of it because it was pretty inexpensive, but at least a diffuser or something would have been nice. I tried it out for the heck of it and didn't even bother keeping in in there past one day.

The neighbor kids wanted to set up a new salt water with spongebob theme--this particular piece did not work from the start so we just have it as ornamental rather than aerator.

Except if falls over quite a bit. The bubble blowing part sticks out in the front making it somewhat topheavy and prone to tipping over.

Automatic Fish Feeder - Digital Timer and Adjustable Food Hopper - By AquaChef

Works but not that well. Set it up to feed a 33 gallon long marine aquarium for a week while I was on vacation. I do like the way the drum rotates completely all the way around at once to dump food, some feeders use a slow turning of a drum to time the addition of food. Setup of the timer is just more complex than it should be. I used the included Velcro to mount the feeder to the top of a wood canopy where the flakes were to fall into a section I cut out for the hang-on-tank protein skimmer to fit in. Upon pulling the drum off to add flakes the plastic backing of the drum pulled out and bent(not good)although I was able to get it almost back into position when I put the drum back on. Also, when I returned the feeder had leaned over off the Velcro so that it was out of optimal position and the flakes weren't falling as they should. My fish lived but I wouldn't trust it again.

EDIT: I gave this product another try when going on vacation for two weeks this October 2007. When set up properly and filled properly this feeder works with out fail. I secured the feeder to a strip of scrap wood screwed into the tank hood so that it had to stay in place. I also filled the drum through the discharge hole instead of pulling the drum off. My fish were still fat and happy on my return. Can't be beat for the price. 5 Stars. If you lose the instructions for setting feeding times you can go to the link below for a complete on line copy.

I have a 20 gallon fish tank with six fishes(kois and goldfish) and I wanted a fish feeder for when I go on vacation which is normally about ten days. I used this item and it worked perfectly. You just have to program it for the time of day you want the fish to be fed and it can feed up to two feedings at a time . What happens is the drum just makes two rotations and drops the food. Setting up the feeder is like programming your digital watch so just follow the instructions and all will be fine but dont lose the paper. My wife and I are big fish lovers and also like to travel, weather permitting. We have three aquariums in our home. A 30 gal, a 20 gal, and a 10 gal fry tank. I work 5 days a week and come weekends we are out of here. Purchased a $40.00 auto feeder from a local Pet supply store and it worked for 20 minutes and quit. They replaced it and the same thing happened so we got our money back and purchased the AquaChef to feed the 30 gallon tank. Set it up and let it feed the fish in the 30 gallon tank for several days to see how it worked. Its hell to program if you don't read the instructions. If you go thru them once step by step and it rather simple. My 12 year old granddaughter programmed it in about 5 minutes the first time but did not understand military time so had it feeding at the wrong time but working very well. I helped her with the time setting and it began feeding flawlessly. With the exception of the fry tank, they all will have one of these on it. Don't let the instructions scare you, my granddaughter didn't. Going to purchase several more by my aquariums and my daughters. I love it !!!

UPDATE:

Mounting the device with the clamping device is rather simple. The C clamp will attach to the front of all aquariums. Do this: place the device close to a lightbulb for 10 minutes to get the plastic more pliable. Not close enough to melt it however. Now remove the rubber suction cup from the inside of the clamp. This should be put away for future use. Use the non-hook side of the velcroe which is just a soft buffer for the glass. Place it where you want the feeder. Now slide the clamp down till it hits the inside of the plastic and gently open the clamp a small amount. It will spring back, no problem. Do not overdue the spreading of the clamp and do it slowely. Now the inside protion will go directly against the glass and the screw can be turned in against the velcroe. Tight and secure. Works extremely well.

I bought the Aquachef before going away on a vacation, as most people do. Some things I first noticed; programming is a bit ambiguous, but I figured it out; the device feels like it's going to break when you pull the drum off to fill it (there's no release, you just pull it), and the supply door is just a bent plastic fold, not really a door (mine is already starting to break), and the "clamp" was too narrow to get over either of my tank rims (they are regular plastic frames), I had to cut off the screw clamp and rely on the velcro to hold it on, it leans at an angle with the velcro barely holding it in place.

I have had it for about nine months now, it periodically loses all power, you have to bang it go get the display to come back on, all programming gets lost. If you disturb the machine (for instance when trying to pull the drum off) it loses power. Today, I noticed that the feeding latch was in the wrong position, after hitting manual feed a few times, I saw that the drum only goes around 180 degrees, not 360, so the feeding latch only lets food out every other cycle. I changed the batteries, re-programmed it, and it still only goes half way around.

Basically, it's junk. When I first noticed it losing power, I bought another brand as a back-up and I have both running. That feeder isn't much higher quality. I would love to find a high quality, reliable feeder.

I purchased this feeder so my fish would not go hungry while I was on vacation. The time and the feedings are set using a 24h clock, so it's pretty hard to mess up. I did a trial run and everything seemed to be working fine. When I got back from vacation, my fish were not looking so hot. I fed them and they ate voraciously which got me wondering if the feeder was actually working. So I set my iphone alarm for 10:00 am and watched the feeder to see if it was dispensing food. Nothing. Then I set it for 11:00 am, and watched. Still nothing. So somewhere during the time I was gone, this feeder just quit working. Batteries are fine, clock is set right and so is the feeding time.

Maybe it will work for you, but it didn't work for me.

50 gallon acrylic tank was delivered quickly, and very well packed with cushioning. The light fixture only contains one fluorescent bulb, which is just barely enough light to show plants and fish. If I hadn't positioned aquarium near window, the plants would not have gown well. I recommend either adding another bulb, or replacing the fixture with something that puts out more light.

It's real tall, 20 inches, I thought it was going to be 18. The front and sides are all 1 piece, with slightly rounded corners and the back corners are welded to the back piece so it has square back corners. This design make for one continuous view like some of their bowed front tanks but with a more convenient shape. It's frameless so the have a top piece welded to support the piece from bowing or separating as it ages. The free "light" is junk. I tossed mine in the garbage. They should save some costs and skip it. It's 10-20 cents worth a plastic and a $10 (full retail) expand-a-light fixture held in by to cheap plastic grommets. It's just barely 36" inches so a 36" Odyssea light (on 3 separate timers) mounts real low since it fit a bit (1/4") longer and the light will slip off the support brackets in the upper position. I'd suggest you consider a 30" light (24" will not properly light it if you expect to use plants) if you can find one or just get their longer 4 foot tank. It has 4 cut outs in the top. 2 for lighting and two for filters etc. But I'm using Fluval underwater units (one in "plant" mode near the heater and one in Venturi mode at the other end) since it's in a room where conversations occur. I'll post some picture later on. It's just finished cycling and I'm still installing more plants. It arrives with a protect piece of paper on the bottom which easily peels off. Remember to remove it before filling the tank. Needs furniture that can support 500 pounds by the time you add substrate material and water even though the tank itself is VERY light. They used 1/4" thick acrylic for all sides. The tank has sturdy "feel" to it when handled. I used 3 different rock sizes to create a more natural environment. The baby Platy fish love to hide in between some of the medium "pea" sided rocks placed over the smaller plant friendly substrate material.

The great part is that about once a week I take them out and rinse them under hot water in the sink and it prolongs their life. Water stays perfectly clear and healthy!

I do wish they sell these in bulk and at my local pet stores but there is no other complaint. Keep in mind that you use 2 filters at a time so you should stock up on these.

At first, I didn't think much of it. But, after using it, I was amazed at the amount of waste it can pick up. Here's a little bit of info on it. If you want to get extra time out of it. Wach it out in the sink and with a soft brush scrapt of the extra alga. I managed to get an extra two weeks out of it.

ok first off if you have LARGE cichlids they can't get in this cave when full grown... however it is MUCH bigger than it looks.. . I have a 48" wide 75 Gallon tank and this takes up about 1/3 of the bottom.. it also has a mostly flat top/bottom

so while the adults can't get IN the cave.. they can easily use the top for egg laying and the fry will be able to hide in it..

I am very happy with this overall!! especially for the price!

We have several aquariums with Large cichlids. We buy caves for helping reproductions of cichlids, but normally at the pet shop they are very very expensive (an equivalent to this one in the pet shop could cost about $80cand.) so this one's really make a good job.
