Aqueon Flex LED Aquarium Bubble Wand, 21-Inch, White

Aqueon Flex LED Aquarium Bubble Wand, 21-Inch, WhiteThe product came in the estimated range and was what we wanted. It produces just enough bubbles and was pretty easy to install.

I like the look of the LED lights, and the bubble wall, but I had a fish die already from this, as it got caught between the wand and the glass back of the tank. (My wand is suction cup'ed to the back wall.) The other fish seem to not have issue with it, so maybe it was the stupid fish of the group, maybe it was just hiding, i dunno.

This item looks amazing in my tank. I love it! I have a 120 gallon tank, and like it so much, I ordered 2 more to go along the whole backside of my tank! I have had so many compliments on it!!

I bought this and was thrilled. the lights looked wonderful woven around my plants and ornaments. I never could get even bubble flow. there was always too many at the hook up and not enough at the end. but I was willing to overlook that because the lights alone were great. jump to less than a month after installation, I plug it in, and the lights flicker and die. I checked the connections and all is well. I finally get frustrated and remove the whole thing to find every light burnt out with reddish, what I assume to be rust, seeping out from them. I am much less than thrilled with this product now.

Over the past 40 years of keeping fish I've learned that for myself one of the greatest joys is of aquascaping. For years I had fish tanks that looked like well, fish tanks. Those dreadful backgrounds of other fish tanks, artificial plants and so on.

But like any hobby as long as the interest is there things tend to evolve and change. That said I've found one of the most inexpensive and creative way to make subtle to dramatic changes to most any tank is by using up lighting as the old saying goes "lighting is everything"

When Marineland came out with their LED wands I had them in many tanks in different numbers and colors, mostly the Lunar blue and white. The wands were just ok as they have a tendency to release and float to the top and the LED bulbs are quite dim. Enter the ViaAqua wands these were much better. They're weighted and have stronger suction cups so they stay put, the LED bulbs are brighter but the air tube is rather weak and thin and like the Marineland they clog easy.

When I came across these bendable LED air wands by Aqueon I could just imagine the possibilities, circles, half circles, quarter moon. Building multi layered air columns and so on. My hunch was right and these wands are sensational.

The build quality is the best yet so far the main tube is stronger so you can feel free to bend these into virtually any shape you like. The outflow is generous and creates a wall of bubbles in an even beautiful flow.

The main housing is a pliable rubber and each LED is incredibly bright, in fact a little too bright. It's easy too adjust this by adding a lamp dimmer if you want a nice range of adjustment to the brightness. I would say this applies really only to the white as the Lunar blue has a much more softer hue and is closer to a true Lunar blue as you would find with over head LED lighting systems that offer this feature.

Bending these around your tank decor adds tons of visual appeal as well as great extra oxygen via the increased aeration one of the best things you can do for your fish.

I'm running a bunch of these in different sized tanks from 55's to 125 and up and find them to be a wonderful addition to every single one of them. I think any hobbyist will love these.

Polly's Cholla Cactus Bird Perch, Medium

Polly's Cholla Cactus Bird Perch, MediumThis item is exactly as I expected. My bird was surprized to see it in his cage but started to use it immediately.

Arthur is a red-lored amazon parrot who dislikes anything "new" in his cage--distrustful would be the word. He'd had a cholla cactus perch before but had chewed most of one end off. Fortunately, placing it in the same location as the prior one did not pose a problem---He's happy---so I'M happy!!

Tetra Decorative Reptile Filter for Aquariums up to 55 Gallons

Tetra Decorative Reptile Filter for Aquariums up to 55 GallonsI have bought several different filters and waterfall pumps in the past and this Decorative Reptofilter is "Hands Down" the best purchase I have made!

Had it going on a month now and the water is still crystal clear with only one filter change.

If you shut it off and then turn back on the flow is immediate (no priming).

The filters are a breeze to change.

I have it set up in a 20 gallon long Terrarium (1/2 water 1/2 land) with four Fire belly Toads. Before that I had two small Turtles in it (since moved to a larger aquarium) and the water stayed cleaner than using my Cascade 100 Power Filter!

For replacement filters order the Tetra 26160 Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridge, Unassembled, Medium, 12-Pack they are way less expensive and you can reuse the plastic frames from the filters that come with it.

I have had this filter for about three months in one end of a standard 10 gallon aquarium, which houses a small newt. It's a nice way to hide the filter away, and to keep delicate amphibians out of trouble, as they have a tendency to explore the insides of dark places like filter housings.

It provides some dry land area, with an easy climb out of the water. It is also much taller than other in-tank filters that I have tried, so the water level can be deep enough for the health of aquatic animals like my newt.

It takes two standard sized filter cartridges, which are used by many other filters, so they are relatively cheap and easy to find. The top of the rock lifts away, allowing easy access to change the filter cartridges without the need to tear the habitat apart. It also has handy fill lines on the back side of the rock, which mark the high and low fill levels.

The top fits snugly over the waterfall outlet, so there is no danger of small animals getting into the filter and becoming injured. The largest gaps into the filter housing are the intake holes along the bottom of the rock, which are about 3/8" in diameter. It would be very easy to block them with mesh if you have smaller animals.

I am considering purchasing a second one for my firebellied toad habitat. I definitely recommend this filter. It was well thought out and is of good overall design and quality.

Works great. I have it in a 40 gallon tank with about 20 gal of water. The turtles seem to enjoy climbing on the rocky exterior of the filter. I was able to use the regular Tetra Whisper filter cartridges which are cheaper than the reptofilters with this filter.

I was using a Fluvial filter for my turtle tank. It worked great, but had to be taken apart to clean each week, and was kinda a pain in the butt. My turtle liked the water that squirted out.

I needed something easier to clean while I recovered from surgery, so tried this. The reviews had been mixed, but I bought one anyway.

Super easy to set up and looks really good. Its way easier to clean than my Fluvial. But....I can go longer between cleanings than I could with the Fluvial if I need to, but the water is never as crystal clear as the Fluvial it was the first few days after I cleaned it.

It got me through recovery, but my turtle misses the jet of water squirting her. I do love the ease of changing the filters. So I am giving it an okey rating. Not great, not terrible. Maybe it would be better for a smaller turtle. My res is pretty big.

Want Tetra Decorative Reptile Filter for Aquariums up to 55 Gallons Discount?

I recently bought this filter for my 40 gallon tank. It looks very nice in the corner of the tank. My turtle often swims over and sits near it, resting her legs on the side of it. The filter is very quiet, I do not hear it at all. The water fall lets off a tranquil sound of running water. Friends and family have commented on how nice it looks in my tank and how they love the sound of the running water.

I gave this filter 4 out of 5 stars because I do have a problem with cloudy water. I change the water in my tank once a week. My cloudy water problem though could be a result of my turtles food, not the filter. I am currently working on correcting this problem.

Overall, I am glad I bought this filter and would recommend it to others!

Prime, 100 mL / 3.4 fl. oz.

Prime, 100 mL / 3.4 fl. oz.It does a great job on treating tap water.

The smell of this stuff is not great, but goes away after the water is treated.

This stuff really works! It does have a small foul odor to it, but it dissipates soon enough. It only takes a day or two for this stuff to work it's magic on high levels of Ammonia and such. My water is crystal clear and my African Cichlids are happy. Two thumbs up!

Buy Prime, 100 mL / 3.4 fl. oz. Now

i decided to try this line of aquarium products because after reading the literature on it, it seemed the more innovative direction to take in striving for creating optimal turtle tank conditions. i have had great results with seachem's purigen, which is a "re-chargeable" substitute for carbon in your aquarium filter.....if u inow turtles, they are very dirty and consequently, i was spending a great deal on carbon, which is really just a throw away after one use. anyhow, the prime product is used when u do water changes and when i first saw the size. the bottle, it seemed so small until i read the instructions....you only use a teaspoon for 50 gallons. the combination of the seachem products is resulting in better test results on my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels and i don't have to do as much maintenance on the filter and the tank it seems. i would heartily recommend this product and plan to continue on with ordering items in their line!!

Used it since i started a new tank, works well. The ammonia feature works somewhat, it seems to improve the fish coat. Removes chlorine well never had a chlorine problem while using this.

Want Prime, 100 mL / 3.4 fl. oz. Discount?

Must have product for all aquariums!!! The label / bottle might not look as appealing as other branded aquarium pharmaceuticals (ie. TetraFin etc.) but the product works wonders. One thing for sure is, when using this product you might show false positives in your test kits, however, do not be alarmed if you see high Ammonia / Trite / Trate readings, this product simply detoxes these for up to 24-48 hours to make it safe for fish. To get proper readings, just perform water changes weekly.

Just as a tip, I use Prime to help me with my fish in cycles.

NOTE: FISHLESS CYCLES ARE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED, IT IS LESS CRUEL FOR THE FISH AND WILL GIVE YOU AN ADDED BENEFIT OF FULLY STOCKING AN AQUARIUM.

So far I have few things to say about this filter system. 1: I cant find the replacement cartridges anywhere else. 2: the connectors that attach the plates are really tight fits. 3: The system works exactly as it should though I recommend some sort of media under it to help process the waste that collects there. It does exactly what it is supposed top do and in my larger tank wiht a 55gal sized one I even have a turbo jet hooked up to is. Keeps the tank much cleaner.

It didn't come with the pump or long enough hoses, but that's just what I assumed was going to be in it. It's not their fault it didn't come with it. But, whatever... sometimes I'm over-critical. But, yeah... already had a hose and then just got a fuel hose connector and some quarter inch hose and boom! Bubbles through tubes in the back of my fresh water fish tank. Oh, joy.

After having it in my tank for over a half year, it still looks terrific. Looks like it will do well. It's much more attractive than my previous aquarium "plants" that were all plastic.

Cascade® Internal Submersible Filters for Aquariums - UL Listed

Penn Plax Cascade 600 Internal Filter for AquariumsThe Cascade 300 inline filter is a good cheap filter for a five or 10 gallon tank that requires a slow to medium current (I use it in 5gal betta tanks) but I would not recommend it in anything bigger as any bio-load over 'light' would overwhelm it.

It has a bio-sponge section and a "Disposable Carbon filter Cartridge" that they want you to buy in packs. I pried open the cartridge it came with to find low grade carbon pellets so I replaced them with Marineland Black Diamond Premium and it works even better now.

I use two Cascade 600 filters in my 55 gallon aquatic Xenopus (African Clawed Frog) tank. As they like to hang at the surface of the water, mate, and eat without getting blown around by a high current, they are happy with the fact that the flow rate is low because I can turn the outlet away from the center of the tank and into the back tank wall. Because they like to excrete that which they consume in large amounts, I am happy that their tank is kept clean between water changes. For larger amphibian tanks, these filters are quite effective AND low in price. More effective in a larger tank than Duetto internal filters. I have Duetto filters in smaller 10-20 gallon tanks for amphibians and find that the Cascade filters are better for larger tanks. You can use the nozzle shown on the box picture or you can use a bar that is included with the filter. They are big, bulky filters that take up space in the tank, but this is the downside of filtration that has low currents. I can not testify as to longevity of the item, but I have been willing to risk the purchase as for the time being we are all very happy. Buy if you want good filtration with a low flow rate at a good price.

I have a red eared slider turtle and his home is a 55 gallon tank. He makes quite a mess in his home and I have gone through at least 4-5 different filters in the 2+ years that I have had him. I've tried the external filters that sound like a constant waterfall only to have it short out. So then I decided to look at submersible filters and went through about 2 of those before I found this. At first I was frustrated because the water started to turn green and it was as though it wasn't working. Miraculously one morning I woke up and the water was crystal clear and has been since then. It's quiet and Homer LOVES to float in front of the water being pushed out. He puts his little head in his shell and let's the water just shoot over top of his shell.

To sum it up it's powerful, quiet and Homer loves the water coming out of the filter. I would absolutely recommend this!!!!!!

I've been using it within the frame of a week now and so far it's doing great. It's more than powerful enough to clear out my 55 gallon tank. I'm going to have to buy a longer air-hose for it so I can put it at the bottom of my tank, but that is cheap and easy to do. Other than that it seems to be the best water pump that I've ever used.

Want Cascade® Internal Submersible Filters for Aquariums - UL Listed Discount?

I got this filter for my 10 gallon Amazon River species tank. To start off with, I think Penn-Plax (maker of cascade products) really deserves more recognition. Their stuff has been compared to higher end brands like Fluval and Aquaclear. Like the Aquaclear you can put what ever media you want inside the compartment. You can hook the nozzle up to the provided airline tube (does not need air pump) so it can draw in air and spray out bubbles. Another option is to use the spray bar that comes with it. Since it draws the water straight through the media as a canister filter would, it is A LOT more efficient, allowing it to have a lower GPH. I also like that the pump comes AFTER the media, making sand and other abrasive particles less likely to damage the impeller. It can be fully submerged, and oriented sideways and still operate. You can also attach a tube to it allowing it to be used as a filter pump in a vivarium. It has an adjustable flow, which is a really useful feature. I really like this product and would recommend it to someone on a tighter budget. If you are searching for a filter for your first tank and can't afford a tetra, Aquaclear, and other higher end filters, I would really recommend this, in fact, I would still recommend this even if your not on a tight budget. If you are setting up your first tank I pray it goes well and remember to cycle!!!

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8" hose - Original Eth 201

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8' hose - Original Eth 201I have a tall 29 gallon that had a typical submersible "stick" heater in it. The problem inconsistent heat. No matter where you put that stick, the temperature in the tank will vary as you get further away from the stick, and will vary a lot from top to bottom. I had to set it to 82 degrees to get an average of 76, and the furthest corner was usually closer to 72.... that's a HUGE variance which is bad for the fish.

This heats ALL your water every drop passes through this heater (about 6 times an hour if you have adequate flow through your filter).

I put this in my output line, set it to 78, and within 1 hour got a reading of EXACTLY 78, no matter where I put the thermometer in the tank. I will never go back to stick heaters again.

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!

Bought this heater for use w/ a Fluval 305 canister filter on a 45gal corner pentagram community tank. The old glass tube heater's thermostat seemed to stop working (maybe because I let the water level drop a bit low), and I came across this inline model while looking for a replacement.

First off, the heater is much larger than I expected. It was too long to install above the filter yet below the tank in my stand (while keeping the required vertical positioning), so I had to move the tank away from the wall in order to install it in-line on the return hose behind the tank. Since it's also pretty fat (much thicker than the hoses themselves), the tank now sits a few inches from the wall instead of almost right up against it. The Fluval 305 filter also uses the ribbed hoses, which I found out after purchasing the heater are not 5/8ths, but 3/4" themselves. A few posts on the net said connecting the ribbed hoses directly to the heater would result in leaks. I ended up buying a couple of the rubber Fluval hose ends, which just push on to the ends of the cut ribbed hose, and so far, no leaks.

Once installed, the heater seems to work well, but the temp setting on the dial doesn't match the 2 thermometers in the tank. The thermometers both read ~2 degrees higher than the dial. As long as this remains consisant, this isn't a big deal. The ambient temp in the house will be as low as 65, but the heater doesn't seem to have any trouble maintaining the tank at 78.

It is nice to be able to not have a glass tube heater showing in the tank, though. Makes for a cleaner looking setup.

Buy Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8" hose - Original Eth 201 Now

My first fish was a little crazy and used to swim frantically around the tank banging into the walls. Turns out he smashed the glass heater and the rest (along with the fish) is history. Went to the "in-line" heater version after that and this heater works great. Use it in a 30 gallon, acrylic tank.

Read Best Reviews of Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8" hose - Original Eth 201 Here

I bought one of these to use with a Fluval 306 canister filter and 50 gallon tank. Connecting it to the filter was not straight forward since Fluval uses ribbed hoses. I ended up using a clear 5/8" PVC hose from the filter to the intake of the heater and then used the rubber connector and the ribbed hose on the discharge to the tank. So far in nearly 6 months of use this has worked flawlessly with no leaks.

I can't say enough about how well the heater works as far as controlling the tank temperature. I have a digital thermometer and it never fluctuates more than +/.1 degrees no matter what the room temperature is. You do hear a slight click when the the heater turns on or off which means they use a mechanical relay to control the voltage to the heating element. I like this as most heaters use a solid state relay (think transistor) which is usually the reason heaters fail in the "on" state and fry the tank, SSR's almost always fail "on".

If you have a canister filter you can't go wrong with one of these heaters.

Want Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8" hose - Original Eth 201 Discount?

I have this installed on the output of a Fluval 206 canister filter. Keeps the turtle water at 80 degrees effortlessly. The outside of the unit does not get very warm, so it is not a problem having it rest against the aquarium background. The tank is a 55 gallon with about 40 gallons of water in it. I took about a foot of the black flexible Fluval tubing and put a rubber end on it with silicone, then covered that with heat shrink tubing. It attaches firmly to the compression fitting. I had a clip that slides over the tank rim, so attached the heater to that with a cable tie. It is very lightweight. Love it!

Aquavista 500 Wall Mounted Aquarium with Coral Reef Background

Aquavista 500 Wall Mounted Aquarium with Coral Reef Background, Black FrameFirst, I would like to say that if you are considering buying this product, you should read this. I was very mislead by the youtube videos, and all the product reviews on this product. I have had this product for over 6 months. Let me explain to you, my story.

1. Purchased Product, Received Product fairly quick. Missing Mint Cloth, Screws & Hardware, also the entire lightning balast system /including bulb.

No problem? Just exchange it right? Wrong. 2nd Product Received with the same accessories missing plus a plastic part on the aquiarum cover/lid was broke off. And instead of the aquarium saying Aquavista (under where the frame goes, it said "china" embedded in the plastic.)

Hmm.. I think to myself.. This can't happen a third time can it? Why, Yes it can! It came from china. Same missing accessories: Screws & Hardware, cloth, lightning ballast system + bulb. Wow, Right off the bat someone would rate this a 1 star.. Not me, I'm willing to give it a shot!

I call Amazon, they told me to contact Aquavista. Aquavista Customer Service Support was very nice, they sent me Lightning Ballast + bulb that i had to install / + free filters.

After setting up this aquarium, i had bought my own pebbles / Rocks. ( this will become a nightmare as small rocks will fall in the filteration area and become stuck). I followed the manual, waited to put fish in tank.

I have had a horrible time with this tank, I have to clean this tank at least once every week otherwise the tank becomes filthy and fish start dying. I have had horrible, horrible experiences with this tank. Here's one to mention. One morning, GloTetra Disappeared. Hmm.. Where he go? Called aquavista. They told me to check behind the aquarium background. (was really fun trying to take this off after setting aquarium up.) Long story short, in the bottom right side of tank, theres a small hole (between black filter cover and background in corner of tank) where little fishies can get through. SO, Mr. Fish was stuck behind the tank. Long story short, becasue i had to bend background alittle to get fish on other side, small rocks fell between the plastic and background to where the picture would not fit the way it should. Had to take the entire tank apart, fake aquarium plants, small ship, fish, rocks.. everything. This was truely a nightmare. This didn't happen once, but three times. Once with a albino frog (didn't have to take the tank apart because he was easier to get) and also a neon tetra who is decaying in the bottom of the tank under the black filter. Oh yes, this causes disease and all fish will die, Except my Pleco + Frog. I have bought a water testing kit before all of this happened, and the ammoneia levels were extremely high. (50-100% water changes + cleaning of all objects/rocks) per week. To top things off? If you accidently overfill the aquarium with water (there is a meter) water will drip on your floor. But one time dripped on the right side instead of the left side. This caused the LCD touchpad + Screen to short out. Aquavista customer server was extremely nice, and sent me another one for me to replace. I paid $ 140 160 for this product and felt that I extremely over paid for cheap china plastic and poor quality. Poor Filtration in a 5.5 Gal = Death to all fish (cept pleco+frog or other high immune system species)

I would not have gotten this product if I would have known all of this could happen. It's truely a beautiful tank when it is lit up and turned on. Then the beautiful moment is ruined by fish who sink to the bottom of your tank lifeless and dead. Go to your local pet store to buy an aquarium worth spending this much money on.

EDIT 8/4/11: Yep, so.. My frog pretty much lives behind the fish tank and comes out when he wants to.. Great conversation piece to tell people why my frog is stuck behind the "design flawed" tank. Yeah... I've tried blocking all areas where he could possibly get behind with the white rocks it came with.. somehow he manages to still get behind there.. fkn frog.

We purchased our Aquavista 500 tank a few weeks ago. We just love it. We mounted it in our family room and it has become a true conversation piece and a hobby for our family. It took a few hours to mount but that was because I wanted as much electrical hidden as possible. Other than that, the process was easy and as our first aquarium, it is very easy to take care of. I really like how everything is built right in. The programming is simple and we like having the ability to set the timers for lighting, etc. We have two small fish and a dwarf frog in the tank and they all seem happy.

First off, it was missing hardware to put it on the wall.Very hard to assemble.

It is a very pretty scene, but do not and I repeat put it anywhere in the house where you are going to sleep because it is extremely noisy.

We bought this for our son's room because not only does he like fish, but it was decorative.Only thing was that it kept him up all night long with the noise the motor made.

Very disappointed because i had been thinking of getting this for about 2 years and kept putting it off.Should have kept with my first instinct.

This is an absolutely amazing product. It brings a new life to any room that you place it in and brings the calm and relaxing feeling that comes with a brilliant fish tank. The internal components, which consists of a filter, heater, air pump and light make this product easily to maintain which in turn makes it fun to own. It took me about an hour to measure out and install the unit, and I then used cable management to hide the power cable. I will be posting pictures later today.

In addition to the great product, the customer service provided by Scott was simply outstanding. He was able to provide immediate support and called me back within minutes. Cheers to a great product with great service!!

36013 Mini Aqualight T5 Light Fixture

36013 Mini Aqualight T5 Light FixtureI bought this light because it fit my proflex model 3 sump that I am using as a refugium perfectly. Unfortunately, the first light only lasted about a week. I exchanged it for a second one, which only lasted about 10 days. I would NOT recommend this product. Heed the advice of myself and other reviews. Look for another alternative, or take your chances. That being said, Amazon's WONDERFUL service resulted in a speedy replacement, and ultimately a speedy response and FULL refund on the second return.

This would be a great light, if the bulbs did not keep burning out. I've replaced the same bulb twice in the space of a few months and my tank is now dark because I can't continue to keep buying replacement bulbs for it and will need to look for a different solution. Waste of money.

Zoo Med Laboratories AZMHLB15 15-Watt Highlights Incandescent Bulb, Blue

Zoo Med Laboratories AZMHLB15 15-Watt Highlights Incandescent Bulb, BlueThis is by far the best bulb I have had in my tank. I have a 5 gal tank with 4 Glo Fish. I have tried 4 different bulbs. Clear Blue Black light and this one. This is BY FAR the best one for the vibrant colors of my fish!! I very highly recommend this bulb.

I have seen this product and thought that it was awesome. I know there are other brands; but this one was the cheapest. I installed the bulb and it worked perfect for the first 2 days. Then I noticed that it was getting brighter and brighter every day; meaning that the bulb was turning clear. After about 4 days, it was a clear bulb with the tip still blue, but the color faded very quickly. I don't know why this would happen; unless it was a fake bulb.

This product is great! I am actually using it for a 5 gallon crabitat (hermit crab habitat) as opposed to an aquarium. It works wonderfully for what I need it for! The typical white light was drying out my crabitatsucking out the moisture and dropping the humidity VERY quickly. This blue light not only looks cool, but it also puts off less heat and thus keeps my crabitat from turing into a desert in less than an hour. I still wouldn't recommend leaving the light on very long if you use it for hermit crabs, as it still does produce heat and evaporates some of the humidity, but it is MUCH better than a regular white light. Also, for the price, this truly is an excellent product.

Not as blue as I thought it would be. Kind of gets hot if left on too long. Hasn't burnt out yet so that's a plus

Marina Slim Filter Zeolite Plus Ceramic Cartridge - 3-Pack

Marina Slim Filter Zeolite Plus Ceramic Cartridge - 3-PackI can't get these locally and the only place that offered to order them for me was over twice the price! Once again, Amazon has the solution! The great part is that about once a week I take them out and rinse them under hot water in the sink and it prolongs their life. Water stays perfectly clear and healthy!

I do wish they sell these in bulk and at my local pet stores but there is no other complaint. Keep in mind that you use 2 filters at a time so you should stock up on these.

Does a really good job on keeping the ammonia levels down and below toxic levels. Easy to change. Very good product.

At first, I didn't think much of it. But, after using it, I was amazed at the amount of waste it can pick up. Here's a little bit of info on it. If you want to get extra time out of it. Wach it out in the sink and with a soft brush scrapt of the extra alga. I managed to get an extra two weeks out of it.

Oh my, who knew having fish would be so expensive buying filters all the time. I change these filters every 2 weeks and the cost really adds up. So instead of going to the pet store, these filters are a great value and save me money.

Hydro III Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 40 gallons

Hydro III Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 40 gallonsMost aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge III is intended for aquariums up to 30 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I ordered 2 of these "Pro" filters and was disappointed to find out they are the regular Hydro Sponge and not the Pro Version. Although the seller describes this as:

"The Pro line is constructed of reticulated foam which doubles its efficiency."

This is not the case. I notified the seller and was told the title and description were a mistake and would be changed. Now after 4-6 weeks, it's still the same... Misleading description.

The seller did refund my money, but here I am searching for the PRO version again and this is still listed incorrectly.

I did give the item 5 stars.... All Hydro Sponge filters rate this, IMO.

I have a smaller version of this filter in my 10 gallon freshwater aquarium (female betta and 6 harlequin rasboras). I decided to add this size hydro sponge filter to my 30 gallon goldfish aquarium, not only for the extra mechanical and biological filtration, but also for the extra oxygenation from the bubbles bursting in the water.

Goldfish create heavy bio-loads, and you can't get enough filtration for them. Sponge filters are remarkably simple to use and maintain in the 10 years I've been keeping fish, I haven't had a hydro sponge pro sponge wear out.

I rinse in used tank water (I dip out some tank water before I start to siphon), and squeeze the sponge out until the rinse water from the sponge runs clean. As long as you don't use the sponge as a scrubber, there shouldn't be a replacement problem with the reticulated foam on the pro version of this filter for quite some time.

I first heard about this system on a planted aquarium discussion board.

After trying it for myself, I am very pleased with the results. Read the previous reviews for details but try it for yourself and you wont be disappointed. Of course the best place to find it is Amazon!

You'll hardly--if ever--see these filters carried in the big box pet stores. Why? Simple: they're not money-makers. The initial cost is low, and there's no need to keep going back to the store to purchase replacement media. Simply give them a good rinse (I always do this with any new piece of equipment), connect them to your air pump, and you're ready to roll. The rising air pulls water through the sponge, trapping waste. The sponge provides a great place for beneficial bacteria to grow (a VITAL part of your filtration), and it aerates the water while you're at it. In some tanks, sponge filters alone could provide adequate filtration. I generally use these to supplement my HOB power filters (Aquaclears).

Maintenance is a piece of cake. Simple rinse out the sponge every few weeks or so (in a bucket of water from the aquarium, so you don't kill the bacteria). As with adding any filter to a tank, always make sure you're taking steps to establish and maintain your biological filter (bacteria).

Rain Fresh Background Double Sided Size: 19 x 50

Rain Fresh Background Double Sided Size: 19 x 50This is sold as a 19x50 item, and it is not. The 50 was actually 12. It is sold by the foot, but for the price being described as 50. I was irritated since I looked for about an hour and a half for the perfect background to match my hermit crab's tank. On the plus side, after I wrote my annoyed message in, the seller did refund me right away. They said it was Amazon's mistake, and they would have it fixed. It has been a couple of weeks, and it is still showing 19x50. I do not know if that is on them or Amazon, so just be aware if you buy this, it is by the foot. All the same, I found another background at the pet store. It was big enough for my 30 gallon tank, and it was much higher quality. It wound up costing me less for the entire thing than this did per foot. The foot of this I received was of average quality as far as weight and durability. The print quality itself was nice, but I am still happier with my pet store purchase. I gave the scrap of this to my daughter to cut a circle out of for her goldfish bowl.

Not much to say about this. It arrived fast and damage free. Looks great in my vivs. 50' provided me with enought to mess up a few attempts to get it perfect and have plenty left over for future projects

This is a nice terrarium background. I prefer the static kind that stick to glass with no adhesive, however this is a good image and is large enough for our gallon tank.
