After reading the one-star review, here are my two cents:

This product worked for me.

Don't put the mother in this nursery until the mother is due.

This product saves baby fish by pumping water from the bottom of the mother's pen into the nursery pen for the baby fish. When the fish are born, the fry are sucked down and up into the nursery pen.

Use a gang valve to adjust the air powering the vacuum so that it doesn't overwhelm the mother.

Pretty amazing, and the best concept for a consumer-level birthing pen that I have come across. Interesting to watch, too.

The plastic is the same brittle plastic that other nurseries use.

The small nursery pen should only be used temporarily before transferring the fry to a larger nursery with nylon netting.

Biggest piece of Junk I have bought for my aquariums. Very disappointing since most of my equipment is from PENN PLAX and I have been pleased in the past. However this item causes too much stress on mother and babies leading to death of mother, babies or all. It is MUCH SMALLER than pictured or quoted. Not worthy of ONE STAR. Would send back but not worth the shipping.

The product description states this "is a completely automatic system" that "creates a constant circulation." That is not even remotely true. This unit is simply a set of two very small, connected tanks that creates no circulation of any kind. If you want the water to circulate, and thus do what this product is supposed to do, you will have to purchase and attach a separate pump. Unfortunately, there's very little guidance on what kind of pump to purchase or how to hook it up. You will also need a gang valve, a check valve, and several sections of tubing, but, again, there's little in the included instructions to help you (not even an illustration of the final assembled unit).

Based on the misleading product description, and the fact that this item is completely useless without them, a pump with valves and tubing clearly should have been included with this set. A great idea that was very poorly executed. That being said, if you purchase the additional four items and get everything hooked up properly, it works fairly well.

API Aquarium Salt

Hi, this salt is very useful for good gill function and helps enhance treatments when using medications to battle parasites and diseases in your aquarium. It helps your fish relax and breath normally when dosing your tank with strong medicines that could cause stress. Should only be used when needed, but a bit of salt after your waterchanges wouldn't hurt at all. Make sure to dissolve in hot water before adding to aquarium.

This salt is actually about the same if not, cheaper than most kitchen sea salt, rock salt etc. Also, some [Non-Iodized] Kitchen salts contain different caking agents other than iodine to prevent salt from clumping up. This aquarium salt is PURE sea salt with no additives so this is your safest route.

Salt is the safest natural way to treat first signs of white spot disease also known as ich. In other words this will only be effective in the early stages and minor infections, if your fish is covered in ich then I suggest using medications with the combination of salt for maximum effectiveness.

Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons, if your fish show no signs of stress feel free to add another 1 Tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons. Then you want to get the heat up to about 85-88 degrees. In order to do this, you have to raise the temperature slowly about 1-2 degrees every hour. Monitor your fish, if they are breathing rapidly the temperature is too high. When you notice some spots disappearing it is important to do atleast a 25% water change to get rid of the parasites in its free swimming stage. Continue treating for another week AFTER you see no spots to ensure you get rid of all the ich.

Warning: Please do research on your fish before using salt. Generally salt is not harmful but if your fish are scaleless or sensitive to salt it can cause death from shock if introduced to your aquarium in large amounts at once.

Adding this product to your aquarium helps to keep your fish healthy and even lowers stress levels. Many freshwater tropical fish still like a slight saltiness to the water. As long as you follow the dosing direction on the box, you should have absolutely no problem with this product.

Things to Remember...

Only add additional salt after you have completed a water change and only add enough salt to dose the amount of water you replaced. Also, do not just top the water level off in your tank if water evaporates. This will just make the salt concentration higher.

I followed the dosing instructions on the label exactly, and a week or so after starting to use it, one of my betta got sick and died. I managed to save my second betta by removing him from the salt water.

I added the required dose for freshwater fish to 2 gallons of water, then added the required water conditioner, and used that water for my water changes. I never put the salt directly into the aquarium, so I always knew it was the right concentration. I made sure the salt was fully dissolved (the chunks are very big).

I don't know what I did wrong, but fortunately I was able to save my second betta after I stopped using this product. I now use the product as a foot soak, so it's not totally wasted. :)

I'll start with a small anecdote. A couple of months ago, my wife decided to lend me a hand a do a water change (bless her heart), but unfortunately, she's not very experienced. I lost 7 fish in the incident and my Colombian Silver Tip developed cloudy eye.

Water parameters were intact, but the fish suffered a great deal of stress, the water was too cold. Anyway, instead of buying and/or applying medicine, I went ahead and added a few spoons of this salt; within 24 hrs, the cloudy eye was gone and the remaining fish started to breathe at a normal pace.

This salt is not only for brackish water, but also for fresh water (but in small amounts). For brackish, as the name implies, it is a must. The salt will encourage a healthy inmune system and will keep the fish happy. It is a perfect additive to prevent and as I said above, cure some illnesses.

I suggest you add this product every time you do a water change or when you add new fish to your aquarium, in small amounts for the latter.

In my 13 years of keeping aquariums, I've always had this product handy. Good luck.

Although this was a great deal, pricing wise, I don't think it's as great as it should be. With this filter I still need to clean my turtles tank once a week, and he's a baby. Another deal breaker is that it makes a lot of noise at random times, and when it needs to be replaced or clean it gets so much worse. I only use this filter because my tank is very small. But I will invest in a better one when my turtle out grows his tank.

Have used many additives to combat ammonia in a new tank. This turned everything around in 24hours. Long and the short is tank crashed due to stupid mistake, the QT wasn't ready then after 24hrs ammonia is at zero and I believe no fish loss. Amazing product and sorry say this but I have too. Noticed this is "made in Germany" so i'm not surprised it worked. Good German Egineering!

When I received this item it was a lot smaller than I expected. The actual pendant is about the size of a kumquat when I was expecting something the size of an apple. You should consider your tank dimensions before ordering this light. There is about 5 inches from the screw clamp to the cord the light hangs from the top arm. The distance from the tank to where the light drops from the stalk is not adjustable so it will work best on a tank 10" in length / depth if you want the pendant to drop near center. I will say I am surprised by how much light the 1w led puts out. Let's be honest you won't be growing plants with this light but is bright and provides good coverage in a small tank (I will be using the lamp on a 5.2 gallon Mr Aqua). With an 8,000K color temperature rating the led gives off a purple / blue light. The AC cord is pretty short, if I had to guess I would say it's 3 feet in total length. Overall I would say it's a decent light if you like the style / size and 8,000k color.

MINI BOW 1 JUNIOR AQUARIUM KIT - TINY TEAL

I recently bought the Mini Bow Aquarium one gallon kit for my apartment. It now houses my red Betta named Anubis. For the first few days everything went swimmingly well with my aquarium. That is up until yesterday when I came home to see that the air pump was nothing but a piece of garbage (i.e died on me while I was away at work). So now Anubis' home is without a pump but that may be for the best since Bettas do prefer to be in calm waters. Besides it was a pain in the rear end to try to set up the pump properly so the water would not spill out of the tank (which I learned the hard way). Because I had bought a plastic strip thermometer for the tank, I have noticed that when the lamp is on, it does heat up the water a couple of degrees. For a Betta that is great because Bettas do need to be in 72 to 80 degree temperature water. I turn off the lamp at night but the temp only drops down to 72 from 74 during the night. The aquarium does not come with any gravel or decorations. A 2 pound bag of gravel is just fine. As for the decorations, just watch what you buy due to space. I have a little cave in my tank which took up quite a bit of room but thankfully Anubis can swim thru it to get to the other side of the tank. Still my Betta has more room in this tank than he would in a regular fish bowl. For Bettas, the Mini Bow aquarium is fine but I can barely recommend the tank for any Betta enthusiast or new Betta owners.

I love the color teal, this teal is very vivid & beautiful. The aquarium arrived on time, was quick & easy to setup, & we love it. Since it does not have a filtration system, I would recommend it for a Betta only. But that is just my opinion. It is getting harder & harder to find these mini-bow aquarium's....so if you want one...I would act quickly. They also come in 2.5 gallon & 5 gallon....but not in teal. Those are red, black, & blue I believe. Walmart carries them, but is often out of stock. These here are priced as cheap, or cheaper than Walmart. All you need is a gallon of spring water, some water treatment for Betta's (use half the recommended amount if using the pre-filtered gallon of spring water). The gallon costs less than a dollar at Walmart & the Betta water treatment can be found at Walmart or Pets Mart. One very small plant, I found several different ones at Pets Mart in a variety of colors for 99 cents each. A pound or even a little less than a pound of rocks or polished marble stones, & a small temparature strip to stick on the side of the tank. Most importantly a 10 watt heater for tanks 10 gallons or smaller made by Aqueon that can also be found at Pets Mart for $15 bucks. It gets a little cold for them in the winter & I have had some die in the past. They are tropical fish, & like the heat. The heater will keep the water at a constant 78 degrees & requires no adjusting. I got some color enhancing Betta pellets & also some bloodworm flakes that I can crumble up while the Betta is young & his mouth is still small. This also adds a little variety to their diet, making them more colorful & helping them to live longer.Last but not least, a Betta of your choice. This tank is so small it will fit virtually anywhere. A desk, a dresser, a bathroom counter, an end table etc. We like ours so much, we have ordered a 2nd to house another Betta we just purchased!

This product is great for housing a betta. I have three of these in red, purple, and black and im going to buy the teal to house my new betta, Waffle. These are great betta tanks, but dont house any other kind of fish in it. In al my tanks, I have two plants, a small round cichlid stone, and a decoration. My bettas love them. Its the perfect size for a betta. THe air pump is a piece of garbage though if you're housing a betta i would recommend tossing it. Dainichi Color FX Sinking, Baby, 1.1 Lb

First I'll start by saying that 8.8 ounces of this at the only local pet store is $24.00. So the price of this is obviously an awesome deal. The shipping even made it come out about 15 dollars less. I feed a mix of Xtreme Spectrum and Dainichi for optimum growth and color for my breeding stock. They love all of them and this one is a must in the mix. Be advised "baby" pellets are abou 1.5mm by my estimation so they are not small in comparison to other brands, this brands small is 3.5mm I believe. This is a great product and I will buy it forever.

Florida Crushed Coral Aquarium Gravel, 15 Lbs

I got this to put in a sump in media bags to buffer my freshwater tank's PH. Before the crushed coral, my PH was reading a flat 6.0 and bottomed out after every water change. But now, my tank's PH is holding at a solid 6.4/6.5 which is good because I have an Amazon River Pacu and they like acidic water. NOTE if you're buying this coral to use for this purpose, start with a small media bag, wait a week or so, test the PH, and add a small amount more if need be. Reason being, if you raise the PH too much or too quickly, ammonia becomes more toxic. AND NEVER use baking soda to manage your PH, it's a shock to the system and can kill your fish as non toxic ammonia becomes toxic free ammonia with the rising PH.

I like it a lot for the aquarium (even though I needed like 1% of what comes in this bag). Be aware that you'll need to rinse this A LOT before putting it in the tank. I probably took 15 minutes to do so before I thought it was sufficient.

This toy is an OK concept however it is very thin plastic. My pup was able to unscrew the lid and have the food out in about 5 min. Luckily she didn't crack the toy. Again this is very thin plastic probably very easy to break.

I picked this toy up for a few dollars from a local discount department store. I wasn't sure about it, but I exclusively feed my 4-month old puppy out of food-dispensing puzzles, and she has gotten very adept at them. I was looking for something new to challenge her a little more (or at least get her some exercise). I got this toy home and thought it was missing a piece. It seemed like the food would just spill out of it. I loaded it and gave it to her, though, and it works perfectly. The bottom of the toy is weighted, and the body is made of slick plastic, so she bats it over, but it won't roll. It just bobs back upright. It's hard for her to turn, since she can't get a good grip on it, so it takes about fifteen minutes for her to finish her meal. The plastic seems perfectly heavy to me, but could be off-putting if you're expecting more of a chew toy. A big dog who chews compulsively could probably shatter it, though. I'm very happy with my purchase, and my dog seems to love it.

We bought one for our Lab/Blue Heeler/Border Collie mix puppy when she way 8 weeks old. She's played with it every day since and it finally broke after a year's hard use. The trick to making it successful is to find or split treats into a size that will just barely fit through the hole so she doesn't get them all at once and doesn't get discouraged if they won't come out at all. Buying a couple more today!

Como 5pcs Plastic Non-return Aquarium Air Pump Check Valves

These worked as desired in my 1/4-in air tubing; however, I had to take a razor and trim plastic tags that were left over from manufacturing. Not that big of deal, there it is.

I'm using these for a hydroponics application, and most of them work. I've had a couple that wouldn't let air through altogether, and it took me a second to realize the failing connection was one of these check valves.

That's just bad QC. Most of the valves I received weren't defective.

Of the working valves I received, I connected one to a deep water culture (for air bubbles) and the weight of the nutrient solution went right through the valve and backed up the airline (heading towards the air pump). Needless to say the air flow stopped. People use check valves so these kinds of things don't happen.

Also, the fittings on each side must be larger than 1/4", because these valves stretch out my 1/4" airline. After I was done with the valve, I had to cut off the small bit of connected airline because it was too stretched out to use (like throwing a hot dog down a hallway).

I didn't really know much about check valves when I ordered these, but it's been some time and I've tried different brands. These are my least favorite and I wouldn't order them again.

I ordered a bunch of these to keep on hand. Well, it appears that I only got 2 useful valves out of the entire bunch. When connected to the air pump, these valves whistle, loudly. Too bad as they are perfectly sized as opposed to some of the other check valves that are available.

I'm not sure if was just bad luck but I will not chance reordering these.

Aqueon Tropical Flakes

This is my favorite brand, and I buy it regularly for my tropical fish. I like that it is an all natural product, that it has a very mild smell, and the fish go crazy when I feed them this food. I didn't realize there was much difference among brands, but my fish look great, their colors are bright and they are all a good weight.

They tend to live a long time, and I've not had a problem with illness or cloudy water for years. I recommend this fish food highly.

I have mollies in my tank, they like this Aqueon Tropical flakes. I would recommend this product and will buy again.

This is one of my mainstays of fish food. In addition to these fish flakes, I also feed my tropical fish dried worms, algae tablets, ants, cucumbers and zucchini. I always feel that fish benefit from a variety of foods so I try my best to give them some variety. This is my mainstay because it's easy to feed and my fish like them a lot. It doesn't cloud the water and some flakes float and some sink. This is great because some fish like to feed the surface and some only feed on sinking flakes. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product, and so are my fish!

Exotic Environments Forgotten Ruins Aquarium Ornament

Since this is a PRODUCT review, I decided to rate it based on the product, itself. It's a very nice item, and would have looked even better in my daughter's little fish tank. I guess the reason I did not give it five stars is because the manufacturer has to take a little blame for a product that breaks so easily during shipment.

The first time I received this item, one of the back corners on the bottom was completely broken off. I decided to do an exchange. When the second one arrived, the OTHER back corner was completely shattered. These failed transactions are a combination of poor packaging (Amazon), careless handling (USPS), and bad construction (manufacturer).

I will not be taking a third chance on this product, and I really regret that my daughter will not get to enjoy it in her fish tank. If you're willing to risk the chance that it might arrive intact, I would probably recommend the product because I think that, compared to pet stores, the price of this item is very good. But if you don't have to patience to deal with products arriving damaged, I recommend going to your local pet shop and spending the extra $5 or $10 for a comparable item.

I had no problems with the castle. It was not damaged in any way. I was a little worried that it would be too big for my tank, but it fits wonderfully. The holes aren't big enough for fish that are bigger than bettas, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it. Overall I think it's a great addition to my tank and the fish seem to like it too.

Lee's 40/55 Original Undergravel Filter, 12-Inch by 48-Inch

I purchased the Lees gravel filter to reduce the drudgery of aquarium maintenance on a 500 gallon freshwater tropical tank. With large tropical fish, I was finding that the tank gravel was getting VERY dirty and spongy with waste product. I ordered the under-gravel filters (4 large ones) to help mitigate this problem.

The filters were easy to put together, but I must say the construction was rather flimsy. Also the carbon charcoal chambers at the tops of the bubble tubes were so small, they needed cleaning a little too often. The flat bases sit on the bottom of the tank, the bubble tubes stick up through the gravel towards the top of the tank. You simply lay your aquarium gravel over the bases and plug your air lines into your compressor.

THE GOOD-

The fact that the gravel was elevated on a base made it SUPER EASY to use a manual siphon to vacuum the silt out of the gravel. The gravel It was also easy to re-level the gravel back onto the bases.

THE BAD-

This product appeared flimsy. The bayonet style attachments of the bubble tubes were prone to breaking during installation and maintenance. The "cleaning action" of the tubes and base was just so-so. Not bad, but not great.

The final impression-

The idea of moving the aquarium gavel onto raised bases such as this is actually excellent. It really has reduced my routine maintenance duration. However, I don't think the electricity ($$$) it takes to power this unit is worth the cleaning power. I have since continued to use the bases, but NOT run the air compressor pump to run the bubble tubes. If there was a way to buy just the gravel bases, now THAT would likely be a 5 STAR purchase review at a MUCH lower cost and MUCH better value!!

i think that the slits in the bottom are to thin, also they are 4 individual peices, water does not flow from one side of the tank to the other undr this filter. i had to cut the sides off each square. would not buy again, but i have it and made it work.

I really like the underwater filter but the only problem I see I am gonna have is buying the replacement filters, I have to buy them online as well, none of the pet stores around my area carry the Lee's filters. If I had known this I may have purchased another type..my fault though I didn't do my homework.

I have a 14 gallon Biocube which came with the blue moonlight led. I added this for creating a dawn/dusk effect. The color adds a noticeable shimmer to the water and my corals seem to like it. Definitely a must have.

I replaced my blue light with this white light I love it looks nice and saves on my electric bill. Can not find these in the local pet supply stores yet. You think if they sell the tank they would at least have the parts to go with it...

Fluval FX5 Fine Filter Polishing Pad - 3-Pack

I've found the white polishing pad to be more commonly available locally, but have read various reports of those clogging up very quickly, a few days.

I have my FX5 in a 120G tank w/ 2 RES turtles, and about 30 small fish. It's doing the job VERY well, and I find that one of these blue pads above the BioMax is keeping the water clean, and catching plenty of fine material w/o clogging up TOO quickly. I'm replacing it about monthly, but given the stocking level of my tank, and the fact that there's TURTLES, I'm MORE than pleased with these!

These work wonderfully in the Fluval FX5 a long time ehiem fan for over 35 years I've been using these filters for larger tanks (up to 300 gal.) in pairs and they're incredibly effective especially for messy fish. Of course, nothing "polishes" the water like a Vortex Diatom Filter which can filter out debris and pathogens down to one micron in size but these are supplementary filters meant only to be used once in a while.

These pads although not as effective will remove particles down to about 10 microns. I run four FX5's and replace these about every 60 days. Like the white foam which is for coarser debris it's imperative to replace them or your GPH will suffer and the re direction of water flow not being able to pass through can result in ahigher degree of bypass an inherant problem with the FX5's in general.

These do keep your water on the pristine side and the value on Amazon is excellent.

catches a lot of fine particles/bits, works well in conjunction with a FX5 canister & other Fluval media. Keeps my 120g w/ large (12"+) mixed cichlid stock crystal clear. I have several that i rotate out, rinse and reuse, fairly sturdy filter pad.

These work as described, but usually pad like these can be washed out and resused. Not the case with these, very thin and only lasted me a month. The white version of these are much better in my opinion.
