This is the standard AquaClear 110 filter insert that you may find in your LFS or box store. I order them here because I usually can't get locally on a consistent basis. They last a good amount of time but don't seem to be quite as well made as they used to be. The material seems to fall apart faster than it did a few years ago. Nothing is made like it used to be anymore.these new aquaclear 110 foam appear at least an inch smaller than the chamber dimension. i like most of my Hagen product, but so disappointed with this one. hope they will make the adjustment to the size so they can fit better or i have to look for alternative solution for my filters.the filter works great and fits perfect in the chamber .... very porous which is essential for the growth of bacteriaThursday, October 23, 2014

Wavemaster Pro Wavemaker
I contacted the Tech Support and promised a couple times to have tech call me back, but never received a callAlthough I cancelled this item (there is no problem with it, actually I have read forums stating it's a great item to have its better than others.) I am giving the "SELLER 5 STARS" review. My husband found the item locally and I had to cancel this item. Not only did they cancel the item, but personally sent me an email advising they did so. It was very fast, no hassles, no questions asked. This is a trusted seller, I would recommend them to others and yes I will purchase from them in the future. I am very happy with the service and prompt response. Thank you.
Zoo Med Laboratories AZMBB9 Nano Banquet Block Mini
I will throw in a block as often as once a week, or every other week (dependent on my weekly to bi-weekly water changes). It is important to only feed these blocks right before a water change is due or right after a water change is completed only because once again, with any plaster fed food, when left in the water column, it can get messy and dirty the tank in a relatively short amount of time. My cherry shrimp, orange bee shrimp, and red fire shrimp do enjoy it however and I will continue to offer it to them as a food variety once in a while.

Chamber Base (Jar) for Diatom D-1 Filters
The plastic jar is cheaply made and can be cracked easily, so take great care when tightening the Vortex D-1 jar cap to the top of this jar.
Having the base is nice since it keeps the jar from falling over, like the glass Mason jar that came with my Vortex D-1 used to do from time to time.
As is the case with all Vortex products, it pays to shop around, since there can be significant differences in price for these items depending on where you purchase them.
Moreover, I have found quite a disparity in the price of this plastic jar. I purchased mine about two years for around $12. I have seen this jar retailing for as high as $35, so shop around before you buy one.
It's a cheaply made product that does its job no more, no less.

Fluval FX5 Fine Filter Polishing Pad - 3-Pack
I have my FX5 in a 120G tank w/ 2 RES turtles, and about 30 small fish. It's doing the job VERY well, and I find that one of these blue pads above the BioMax is keeping the water clean, and catching plenty of fine material w/o clogging up TOO quickly. I'm replacing it about monthly, but given the stocking level of my tank, and the fact that there's TURTLES, I'm MORE than pleased with these! These work wonderfully in the Fluval FX5 a long time ehiem fan for over 35 years I've been using these filters for larger tanks (up to 300 gal.) in pairs and they're incredibly effective especially for messy fish. Of course, nothing "polishes" the water like a Vortex Diatom Filter which can filter out debris and pathogens down to one micron in size but these are supplementary filters meant only to be used once in a while.
These pads although not as effective will remove particles down to about 10 microns. I run four FX5's and replace these about every 60 days. Like the white foam which is for coarser debris it's imperative to replace them or your GPH will suffer and the re direction of water flow not being able to pass through can result in ahigher degree of bypass an inherant problem with the FX5's in general.
These do keep your water on the pristine side and the value on Amazon is excellent.

catches a lot of fine particles/bits, works well in conjunction with a FX5 canister & other Fluval media. Keeps my 120g w/ large (12"+) mixed cichlid stock crystal clear. I have several that i rotate out, rinse and reuse, fairly sturdy filter pad.Want Fluval FX5 Fine Filter Polishing Pad - 3-Pack Discount?
These work as described, but usually pad like these can be washed out and resused. Not the case with these, very thin and only lasted me a month. The white version of these are much better in my opinion.Friday, February 7, 2014

Silent Air® B11 Series Battery Operated Aquarium Air Pumps, Single Outlet, UL Listed
Pros: small, uses D batteries, last a long time, works when power is out and delivers what it is supposed to do.
Cons: Loud. this thing is loud but I have an aquarium cabinet and I put it under there on the shelf and I never heard it when the power went off. So if you have it out in the open, it will be loud. Suggest placing a cloth or something underneath it so it will cut down on the noise.
Overall, I love it and will not be without one. I only gave it 4 stars because it is so loud. The rest is definitely a 5 star.

This product does exactly what it says it does. It is a good system for an emergency aquarium pump that cuts on automatically when the power cuts off. Very convenient when it happens while you are at work or away from the house. Some have said this model makes a lot of noise, but I do not think the fish will complain that they are getting airflow in an emergency. The noise is not that loud, IMO, and it can be muffled if placed inside a cabinet, such as those that most aquarium stands have. It takes two D batteries, not included. The tubing that comes with the product is only about 12 inches in length, so for my system, that was inadequate. But it accepts standard tubing that you can purchase at your local pet store. For a few bucks you can get about 6' of tubing. In the 18 months I've had my current aquarium I've had two blackouts and this product has saved my fish each time. I've had no loss of life while it's been the sole source of aeration. I can't confirm the manufacturer claimed 48 hour run time because I've never had to run it that long. But it definitely runs at least 8 hours in my experience with no signs of slowing down, and with fresh batteries I don't doubt it would run an additional 40.It will automatically detect a power outage and turn itself on, so you don't need to be there to activate it (just make sure the power switch is always set to "on"). You plug its power cord into an outlet and that is how it detects a loss of power. But the power cord neither powers the unit, nor can it charge the batteries. This is strictly a battery-operated back-up system and is not intended to be an everyday air pump. The supplied air line is absurdly short for most applications, so be sure to pick up your own. Also be sure to purchase and insert a back flow preventer (not included) into the air line to prevent water from flowing back into the pump, which will destroy it. I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 because it is absurdly loud, which is unacceptable in an era where most manufacturers have found a way to make these things whisper quiet. How loud is it? Even if you put this thing in a cabinet, if your aquarium is in your bedroom you would never be able to sleep. Despite that one complaint, every aquarium owner should have one of these. I consider it as essential as having a heater and filter.
EDIT: I was without power for a week after Hurricane Sandy. I can now confrim that it lasted 6 straight days on the same set of batteries I mentioned earlier in this review that ran 8 hours a year ago. A fresh set should give you at least 7 days. Outstanding.

I live in a area where power can go out for long period of times. I have had this for a while now and have seen it work. It turns on instantly when the power goes out, even if the power only flickers. It works well, but it is extremely loud. I'm giving it a 4 due to the noise.Friday, January 3, 2014

Aqua-tech Power Filter for 5-15 Gallon Aquariums
In response to other reviewers who broke theirs or felt it was too loud, you must prime it. If you do not fill the filter basin with water it will chug along really loud and eventually burn out the motor. Probably says that in the instructions..I started up 2 10-gal tanks ( 1 for each of my kids) about a month ago. One tank I had already so I just bought the Aqua-Tech filter from walmart and the other I got as a basic kit from Petco which was Aqueon brand. Everything else in both tanks were identical including the plants, rocks and fish. The Aqua-Tech 5-15 filter has kept the tank crystal clear since day 1 and the fish are healthy and active. The Aqueon tank had so much trouble the first couple weeks the fish were dying and I could never get the water as clear as the other tank so finally to end my frustration I just went and got another Aqua-Tech 5-15 filter for the 2nd tank and it's looking so much better!
I really expected the Aqueon filter to work better since it was from a "pet" store but I think for sure the Aqua-Tech filter is better!

I have a 10gal triple divided male Betta tank and I'm using 2 of these with good results. Since I have dividers, I wasn't getting the filtration that I needed so I picked up another one and my problem was solved. I have both of them baffled since Betta don't like strong currents. And also got a Fluval pre-filter from petsmart covering the intakes and they still do a good job. As another review said, you must prime the pumps or you'll destroy the motor. Yes they are kind of on the cheap side, but if you do your weekly water changes like you should, you should not have a problem with these. And they are not loud at all.Read Best Reviews of Aqua-tech Power Filter for 5-15 Gallon Aquariums Here
I am rewriting this review since I returned my earlier purchase (which did not work same model and brand) and exchanged it for a new one, hoping it was some sort of mechanical defect or broken part. It seems I may have been right (though I am not entirely certain). The first one just would not work at all. The second one took about as much coaxing as the first, but it did, in the end, start working. I almost couldn't believe my eyes after my titanic battle (which I lost) to get the first one running. I was all but convinced they'd designed a filter that does absolutely nothing.
If you want a filter that's easy to start (just plug it in and go) then don't get this one by any means. The filtration quality is decent for the tank sizes it is recommended for, though for divided tanks, I would recommend having a separate filter for each section. The blue part of the filter (the thing you replace) seems far superior quality to some other filters I have used for smaller tanks. This system also has a component that does NOT need replacing (some kind of BIO-filter where bacteria is intended to grow, I believe). You may notice some Wal-Mart brand activated carbon on the shelves near these don't buy it. The packaging seems to indicate the carbon is a necessary component, when in fact it is contained inside the blue filter cartridge. The only way you could use it is to buy a media/mesh bag and fill it with carbon, then slide it down inside the filter somewhere.
Another reviewer posted that they have to reset the filter every time the power goes off, and I can attest to that. The only tip I can give for how to get this thing to reliably start up has something to do with the impeller and its assembly. I found that you can pull the assembly up a little bit by putting your finger under the assembly more in the center of the reservoir (as opposed to the sides) in between the bio-filter and the cartridge. That's the only decent place to lift up on it. When you lift up (with it already primed and then plugged in) you will hear a grinding as soon as you hear this, shove the whole assembly back down, hard. I think one of the impeller components can spin freely when it's not supposed to (not the impeller itself, but something else). This "jamming" action seems to have jammed that component into its proper place since as soon as I did that, it started working. This must be done EVERY single time the power goes off or you unplug it.
Note: When working, it does take about 20 seconds for the filter to work up to full capacity (with water spewing out at the normal rate). Apparently it can also be baffled by moving the intake tube up and down. However, I am unwilling to try this due to the touchy nature of the impeller assembly. I just know that if I do, it will stop working and I'll have to get it started again.
Overall, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle, but based on some other reviews, and for the price, it is a fairly good filter.

I got this filter in a 5 gallon tank kit for my betta fish. I fallowed the directions and set up the filter. You must pour water into the filter before you plug it in or it will be very loud and you can burn out the motor. It states this in the directions. If it is ever unplugged I pour water into it before i plug it in. It keeps the water very clear. It is so quiet that i often check and see if it is still working. it has a strong current off the top so I had to baffle it with an old water bottle. So far I have had no problems with it. I would update this review if anything happens.Tuesday, October 15, 2013
Zoo Med Betta House 2 Gallon Oval Racetrack Black
I did not want to get a bowl for him, because I know how horrible they are, but I still like round-shaped tanks. However, I also wanted something that was a little differentstandard drum shapes bored me and cylinders seemed no better than bowls. When I saw this, it was perfect! Big enough so that he wouldn't be swimming in circles all day, and so pretty! The black edges really add a unique and artsy quality that looks perfect in my dorm!!
It's an absolutely beautiful tank and I LOVE it! It's big enough so that he can dart around and do his little dance every time I come by with food, but small enough so that I can fit it perfectly on my desk.
I also appreciated that the tank came with a sample of betta food, water conditioner, and a betta care book. I was able to read up on betta care before I got my little buddy, and also made use of the water conditionerI have yet to receive the bottle I ordered, so I was glad I had this one. As for the food, Marvin really likes his Hikari pellets, so I'm keeping the pouch as an emergency supply, in case I run out.
If you're looking for something pretty, and at the same time adequate for a betta fish, this is the perfect tank!
