Hydor 25w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 14' - for Aquariums 10-17 gal

I purchased this for a planted aquarium. It heats so evenly. It sounded like a great idea to use as an under the sand heating cable so the entire tank is evenly heated. It works so well. The plants took off growing like crazy. I am so glad I tried it. It has been a year. At first like any heater, I had to adjust it until the correct temp was being delivered and I have not had to touch it since. I am totally thrilled with this product. Any hydor product has been fine for me. I used the dial thermoset with this not the digital version.

Update: it is now 3-09-2013 and I have been using this heater cable for two years in a heavily planted aquarium with assorted tetras, crystal red shrimp and guppies. The plants and fish are all in great shape. I attribute some of the stability of the tank to the heater cable since it is even heat distribution with no fluctuations. I have experienced no issues so I am not sure what to think of the other reviews I am reading. Perhaps they did not also purchase the required heat regulator? It controls the cable with a dial to select the desired temp. You would need to let these components acclimate to room temperature before using, install them properly (not touching another length of cable on the bottom of the tank and not extending the heating part outside of the tank the first black band is the line separation of non heated and the heated part of the cable which should be in the water). I could not be happier with this style of heating and have set up tank number two (saltwater) with it as well. It also is working well, one month out. I learned many years ago how detrimental heaters can be with the submersable type if not laced within a great flow of water to avoid uneven heat. With the cable heater, I have no worries and no complaints at all. If there was another rating 5 star plus, I would choose it.

I am using it on a 15 gallon aquarium freshwater and a 8 gallon aquarium saltwater

I ordered this heater for a 12 gallon aquarium in my office, which is located in our walkout basement. In the winter, this is a colder room, low to mid 60s. The 25W heater simply could not get my 12 gallon tank to 80 degF; the best it could manage was 74 degF, and this was only when I had warmed my office with a space heater. I ended up having to take the whole aquarium apart again to replace it with the 50W substrate heater, which now keeps my aquarium at the desired 80 degF. So I would recommend to use the next largest power rating up from what Hydor recommends, especially if your aquarium is located in a colder room. You don't want to have to take your aquarium apart again to replace the heater.

Note the low rating is for the bad recommendation on tank size from Hydor. Once installed so that they have enough power to heat, these are great.

purchased two. like others in the review mentioned, the magnet glue came undone before using it. because it was BRAND NEW unused, the company sent me a new one. in conversation with them, i found out:

* they realize this as a manufacture issue and "made it better" instead of having a blacking backing that houses the magnets, their improved version is white. however upon receiving the replacement the white wasnt too much better but it works

* i expected the magnet to slide like a magnetic algae cleaner but it doesn't. customer service says by design it is not suppose to. it would be nice to "slide" so you dont have to get your hand wet as you put the clip on the bottom of your deep (55g) tank.

3 stars because it does work after replacement. but does not meet my expectation.

if you want something that looks nice this is the item to get (providing the magnet casing doesnt break on you). but a DIY clip would've cost you under $2 and as effective.

all their item (see my review on magfox) are good idea but constructed poorly. its too bad.

edit: I wanted to give a better review but it fell apart even more. not only is the stick on the magnet side weak and prone to falling apart, so is the clip side! to make it worst things the plastic material is so slick jb weld comes right off. if jb weld doesnt work on it, i dont know what will

is made of multiple pieces glued together--the glue simply doesn't hold (on either the parts outside the tank or the parts inside the tank. Prob is that re-gluing can be a problem due the possibility of polluting the water in the tank.

Now I have a erector set of multiple pieces that make the item up and it is useless

I love this product when it works. Love it, love it, love it.

Unfortunately, they seem prone to two separate problems:

First, the glue attaching the white magnet to the black clip knob has come apart on every one that I've bought. Fortunately, some super glue or epoxy will ensure you only have to fix it once. Have some handy.

Second, the clip itself breaks after a few months of daily usage. It just gets brittle and snaps. Buy a whole bunch of the suction cup versions of the clip (much cheaper) as spares -the suction cups can be easily interchanged with the magnet holder.

I still use the product every day, but (especially for the price), I shouldn't have needed the epoxy or never-ending string of replacement clips.

Tetra Fauna Viquarium

The description sounds great. We got it set up and running without much effort. However, there are some features we really don't like about it. One the filtration is so-so. Water can run UNDER that filter unit instead of through the filter cartridges. The water flow through the filter cartridges is VERY SLOW. It took much longer than I think it should have to get the water clear after adding our cleaned gravel.

What I consider a serious design flaw is my biggest gripe. We have fire belly toads in our setup. They can crawl through the space where the river bed exits the waterfall tower. And, since our tower has a manufacturing defect, there's a hole in the inside wall of the unit. One of our toads, of course, worked his way in to this hole (which is underwater, by the way) and couldn't get back out. We had to dismantle the ENTIRE thing to empty the water out of the base, pull it up, and retrieve the toad. What this meant was that we had to remove the other toads, scoop out all the waterbed gravel AND the course gravel from the land side which meant destroying our carefully built live-moss landscape. Then, as a two person-and-many-swear-word-job, everything had to be carefully put back into place (difficult because you can't let any gravel get under either piece or they don't work right), try and rebuild our mossy ground cover and re-plant our live plants, and then add back the toads plus more water.

Our fix to prevent this happening again was to place 4 cottonballs at the corners inside the tower unit to prevent toads from working their way into the tower again. So far so good, but I can't imagine what you'd do if you had a small amphibian!

Finally, even though the filtration base makes a really tight fit against the sides of the terrarium, all sorts of debris gets sucked up against the rubber seals I assume this means some water is also flowing beside the filter box instead of through it. Regardless, it's unsightly because there's this vertical line of debris right in the middle of the front of the terrarium glass that I can't reach to clean.

Also, there's no way to easily clean the gravel bed in the land area. I am interested to see if this proves to be a problem or not. The water portion is easy to clean you just siphon it like you would in an aquarium.

I wanter to see my daugter's pet turtle on land for once and thought this waterfall/stream setup might entice him to come out of the pool. Setup was easy and unit has worked flawlessly for several months now.

I put his basking light right over one of the flat "rocks" that covers a filter. The turtle now comes out and basks laying on his rock something I had never seen him doing. Unexpectedly he also "plays" in the stream I think he is searching for food but its quite amusing to see him moving shells around with his head. If threatened by a noise or movement he uses the stream as a water slide to jet himself back down into his pool.

The water quality has been good I change out some every week but it has stayed clear and clean looking. The waterfall and stream have increased evaporation of water so I am adding more water then I used to.

Overall this new setup for our tutle has worked out very well. If a turtle can be said to look happy, then our turtle is happy. His behaviors seem much more natural and he acts more curious now.

I bought this as an upgrade for the one that was in my tank. It is certainly an amazing upgrade!!! However, there absolutely no possible way that this is intended for use by frogs! I had to put a lot of time and money "frog proofing" this product before I even dare to put it in the tank. With a lot of hot glue and nylon screen, I finally was able to put it in the tank. It works wonders! I definitely suggest this product to people with pets over about 4 inches in diameter, or a turtle (I don't think the hard shell could squeeze through the 1.5 inch gaps)

It was easy to set up and it looks great! However, after having it for 2 months algae started growing on the waterfall portion. I was used to cleaning out the water every 2 weeks, so I was surprised that so much algae was growing. I went ahead and emptied everything out and completely cleaned it out instead of just using the gravel vacuum. Everything looked fine again, but then the algae came back just after a few days. I'm not sure it it's the filtration that is not working like it's supposed to, but for the price I was expecting it to work like a charm, and it didn't. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have time to empty it out for a thorough cleaning every week.

Our next door neighbor recently moved out and somehow left his turtle behind. We found him (a Red Eared Slider)walking around in our back yard in late November.

Our 12 year old son was so excited and curious about this turtle that we had to adopt him. We named him "Toodie" and I must admit I fell in love with him too. Having had turtles and fish and all kinds of pets in the past but none now, I wanted to give him a good home and also teach my son how to properly care for and the importance of the "how to and whys" of making the proper habitat for reptiles. Then about a week later I asked a sales specialist at our local Petco store what I could do in order to make the turtle's tank as realistic as possible, making it part aqua and part land environment and he suggested the Tetra-Fauna Viquarium.

So I bought the Tetra-Fauna Viquarium as a family gift for Christmas. It is very well made and well designed. Fortunately, it is NOT made out of cheap plastic...it is made of a heavy clay type material which adds great realism to the unit. The way the clay is molded looks totally realistic, just as you may see a small river waterfall with rocks in a real jungle/tropical area. It fit perfectly in the corner of our 20 gallon tank and because the instructions are simple and well written, I had it set up and running within about 20 minutes. I have had this set up and running in our tank now for about 10 days and the built-in, hidden filtration system is quiet, effective and runs extremely well. The waterfall flow and realism is totally awesome and adds tremendous aesthetic realism, beauty and quality to the turtle's environmental safety and naturalism. Most importantly, "Toodie" just loves it! He climbs up on the top of the waterfall and slides down in to the water below and sometimes basks on top of either one of the two "towers" formed by the clay molding.

I think it was originally priced at over $100.00 but it is a great deal at a lower price here on Amazon.com. For the money, this is a totally worthwhile investment in your turtle's habitat and we have had numerous compliments on the tank by friends and family over the holidays!

The Viquarium unit also give you some design flexibility to your tank; it comes with a nice artificial plant fixtures that looks totally real and also a waterfall "extension" to lengthen the waterfall slide if you wish. The unit is also easy to clean and easy to change the filters. The unit uses two filters that are inexpensive to buy and replace through Amazon.com or your local pet store.

If you really want to care properly for your turtles or other reptiles/amphibians and have a delightfully beautiful addition to your home, get this totally unique and functional asset for your aquarium/terrarium habitat and you will not be disappointed.

Pretty cool ornament. Depending on the air-flow, it cycles every 10 to 20 seconds so the motion isn't too distracting. I would have given it 5 stars but the connector at the end of the tube came off. I repaired it with a little silicone.

If you are like me and do not want to have a sump setup then this is hang on skimmer is a good way to go. It is an all in one skimmer that saves so much time and effort with just one purchase. It comes with the "overflow" box and a pump to suck up the water from the overflow to the first compartment, then mixes it with air to create the airbubbles for the skimming in the next compartment, then the rest of the water goes to the next compartment that you can use for biofilter media, then at the top of that compartment has the return pipe.

Quirks:

This skimmer definitely has its downside which some may find irritating and not worth its purchase. The initial setup can be a challenge. It takes patience to balance the water levels unless you are okay with the massive bubbles that the skimmer can return to the tank. Even when you get it balanced, sometimes it can get out of whack and start bubbling again or the skimmer tube can over flow rendering it useless till you rebalance it. The skimmer may also return an excess amount of micro bubbles making the tank unsightly. I left for the weekend and the skimmer was causing so much bubbling that it splashed salt water all over the place and water logged my stand. So be aware of this.

How to find the skimmers sweet spot:

I had to do a lot of tweaking to find that balance of the skimmer. It took a combination of angling the return pipe, adding some tubing I had laying around and putting it in the return pipe to take up space, and controlling the air intake (for the bubbles), to make the water return not bubble. The air intake tube does come with a muffler but I never use it since I need the other adjustable air intake valve.

Other things:

The pump is immersed in the water in the first compartment. So this does increase the temperature of the water a bit.

The overflow box has teeth to keep the fish from getting sucked up.

The skimmer is meant to be a hangon, and is quite heavy when filled with water. If you plan on using it on a smaller tank, I would have something else supporting the weight rather than only the tank. It might be fine but since I live in a condo with people beneath me, I dont want to take any chances.

So if the benefits of an all in one hang on skimmer outweigh the headaches that you will have then this is a good buy. I haven't seen any other brand other than reef octopus that does something like this so until then, this may be your only option.

Even after the rope is chewed up, the ball survives (and still squeaks!). Good for dogs that like to play tug of war or fetch with a person.

This toy didn't last as long as I'd hoped. My 60 pound puppy loved it, and we did get to play tug for a few days. Once he started chewing the rope it was over though. The rope isn't terribly durable, but we still have the ball, which has a squeaker in it. My dog has started carrying it around the house and chasing it as it moves. This toy is a little pricey in my opinion, but was still fun, and if you don't mind the rope not lasting with a heavy chewer, then it's a great toy!

My dog's a medium sized dog, she loves to play tug-a-war, so i got this toy for her. I feel like it's just too small, it'd be way way better for a smaller dog. Otherwise the rope is durable, the handle is great, and my dog loves to play with it. We don't let her just play with it by herself, cause she'll definitely try to rip it apart. ahah Usually she loves the squeaky toys too but I think she's just too confused since the balls so small.

I would recommend this to someone who has a smaller dog, and maybe the large one for my size dog.

My dogs had the plastic which connects the ends of the rope destroyed in 5 minutes. It is not a tough toy for chewers.

Purchased in January. It is now April and one of the timers does not switch anymore. Even when you try the manual override. Verdict is out though as I have just tried to contact the store where I purchased to see about an exchange. But when it is working it is the best way to control the metal halides/actnic/and moonlights.

After only one feeding in two different tanks, I'm very impressed so far.

I fed 1/4 tablet to 10 Crystal Red Shrimp and they went absolutely crazy! They were darting around the tank and seemed to be fighting over it. I've had them for about a month and feed them a varied diet consisting mostly of Fluval Shrimp Granules and Hikari Crab Cuisine, but also TetraMin Flakes, and Wardley Spirulina Discs. I have never seen them react so positively to any of these foods. The pond snails in the tank were all over it as well.

I fed a 1/2 tablet to 7 Ottos (Otocinclus affinis) in another tank with similar results. Ottos are usually somewhat shy but after a few minutes they must have sensed the dissolving tablet as they also became extremely active. I've never seen them so determined to find food before. The above mentioned Wardley Spirulina Disks provoke very little reaction when compared to the Nutrafin Max. The pond snails in this tank seemed to love it as well.

Pros:

~ My picky shrimp and Ottos love them

Cons:

~ Messy, they fall apart rapidly with any current don't overfeed, turn off your filter and air pumps if possible.

~ I couldn't get the 1/2 tablet to stick to the aquarium glass as advertised. It just crumbled.

Generally speaking, I've been quite impressed with Hagen products and this is no exception!

Lifegard Aquatics Scratch Removal Kit

I love the sponge block, it really allows flexibility.The kit worked well. I have a 39 gal.tank .I noticed at the end the finer papers wore out.

It takes a lot of elbow grease and definitely time consuming. Even so, you might still see the scratch but barely noticeable if done right. Overall, this is a 3/5 product as it will only work if you are willing to work it meticulously.

I tried to clean up scratchs on a 110 gallon acrylic aquarium I bought used, after five hours of sanding I gave up. This product should work fine to remove a small scratch or two but not for a major project. In case you're wondering I did remove the scratchs from my tank with a method I came up with myself. I did not use polish, that is a no no inside of your tank.
