Hydor 25w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 14' - for Aquariums 10-17 gal

Hydor 25w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 14' - for Aquariums 10-17 galI purchased this for a planted aquarium. It heats so evenly. It sounded like a great idea to use as an under the sand heating cable so the entire tank is evenly heated. It works so well. The plants took off growing like crazy. I am so glad I tried it. It has been a year. At first like any heater, I had to adjust it until the correct temp was being delivered and I have not had to touch it since. I am totally thrilled with this product. Any hydor product has been fine for me. I used the dial thermoset with this not the digital version.

Update: it is now 3-09-2013 and I have been using this heater cable for two years in a heavily planted aquarium with assorted tetras, crystal red shrimp and guppies. The plants and fish are all in great shape. I attribute some of the stability of the tank to the heater cable since it is even heat distribution with no fluctuations. I have experienced no issues so I am not sure what to think of the other reviews I am reading. Perhaps they did not also purchase the required heat regulator? It controls the cable with a dial to select the desired temp. You would need to let these components acclimate to room temperature before using, install them properly (not touching another length of cable on the bottom of the tank and not extending the heating part outside of the tank the first black band is the line separation of non heated and the heated part of the cable which should be in the water). I could not be happier with this style of heating and have set up tank number two (saltwater) with it as well. It also is working well, one month out. I learned many years ago how detrimental heaters can be with the submersable type if not laced within a great flow of water to avoid uneven heat. With the cable heater, I have no worries and no complaints at all. If there was another rating 5 star plus, I would choose it.

I am using it on a 15 gallon aquarium freshwater and a 8 gallon aquarium saltwater

I ordered this heater for a 12 gallon aquarium in my office, which is located in our walkout basement. In the winter, this is a colder room, low to mid 60s. The 25W heater simply could not get my 12 gallon tank to 80 degF; the best it could manage was 74 degF, and this was only when I had warmed my office with a space heater. I ended up having to take the whole aquarium apart again to replace it with the 50W substrate heater, which now keeps my aquarium at the desired 80 degF. So I would recommend to use the next largest power rating up from what Hydor recommends, especially if your aquarium is located in a colder room. You don't want to have to take your aquarium apart again to replace the heater.

Note the low rating is for the bad recommendation on tank size from Hydor. Once installed so that they have enough power to heat, these are great.

#500 Pellets - 2 lbs. Fish Food

#500 Pellets - 2 lbs. Fish FoodVery, very inexpensive and the ingredient list seems healthy for my fish but this food disintegrates almost immediately after hitting the water. My tanks look like big fishy snowglobes with brown floaties for many hours after feedings.

My fish don't really like this food that much (they let it float on the water for a long time). The fish have voted it one star but I'll give it two just to be nice...but joking aside, I'd pass on this next time and suggest you do too.

My fish do LOVE these pellets however: Tetra Pond Sticks, 3.53 Ounces

Hope this helps! Keep those fish happy!

Aquatic Life Light T5 HO 2-Lamp Link Fresh Aquarium Light, 36-Inch

Aquatic Life Light T5 HO 2-Lamp Link Fresh Aquarium Light, 36-InchBought these from a different store and without the electronic timer built into the light. I have one of those power center strips with timers that automatically control the light periods so I didn't need timers on the lights for a freshwater tank. I have had these lights for almost two years. I have a 45 gallon planted tank with Fluval Stratum and CO2. These really put out a lot of light I have two lamps which means 4 x 39 watts over 45 gallons. I swapped out the light bulbs for Geisemann bulbs based on feedback from some planted tank online forums. The lights work well if I could have afforded it two years ago, I would have gone LED however. Couple of things to note the lights sit low over the top of the tank. You really cannot fit two banks of lights with a Marineland dual power wheel filter because the lights will hit the top of the filter. There is not much clearance between the top of the tank and the lights so if you're like me and stick your hands in the tank frequently to drop in vegetable foods, move around plants, trim plants, etc. you can barely get your hand under the lights and in the tank. Ditto for trying to fit a gravel suction cleaner in the tank. For those tasks, it's easier just to temporarily move the lights off the tank. Also, my glass cover on the tank is no longer able to flip upso I removed the hinge and now just lift off the glass section to feed the fish. The lights also get hot (even though they are fluorescent) so if you're sticking your hands in the tank, you will get close to the hot bulbs and you'll feel the heat. Not enough to burn your arm but it's still very warm. Like the look of the lights, performance has been excellent my plants grow like crazy (helps to have CO2). Been happy with these.

I have a 180 gallon tank that is 24" deep, and this light has just the right brightness for my plants to thrive, and to light up the tank properly for viewing. I have a glass top, so I just rest the light directly on the canopy, and I haven't had any issues with heat.

I've owned this item for a few months now and have absolutely no complaints at all. It fires up quickly, lights the tank well and has more than doubled the plant growth in my tank. I wasn't sure if I'd like the roseate bulb, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if I'll replace it with another roseate when it dies yet, but so far I can say that I notice a difference in the coloring of the fish from the bulb. Much brighter reds/oranges. I cannot rate its impact on plant growth, however, as this is my first planted tank and therefore I have no experience with other bulbs.

Item was shipped far better than expected it was VERY well wrapped and VERY well protected. Pretty sure I could have thrown the box down the stairs three or four times without any issues.

A great item from a great seller, buy with confidence!

Finally upgraded and bought my second light fixture. The main reason for me buying this brand is because of the ability to link up to three fixtures. Linking the two fixtures wasn't that easy though. It was very hard to line up the screws took me a hr to get things up and rolling. Other than that they work perfectly. They do not get hot and the bulbs that come with them is bright and grows my plants beautifully. I have them set up on timers the front two bulbs are on for three hrs. Then all four bulbs are on for two hrs and the front two bulbs are on for three.

Want Aquatic Life Light T5 HO 2-Lamp Link Fresh Aquarium Light, 36-Inch Discount?

This is a solid light fixture, made of metal with all things held in place by multiple screws. The powercord is thick and the switch feels well built. I have a feeling that this thing is going to last a long time. My previous ballast was discontinued so they stopped selling bulbs for it, hence this purchase once the older bulbs burned out. It is a pain in the neck to change lightbulbs though since you need to flip the unit, unscrew 4 tiny screws (careful, they are easy to lose), slide open the clear plastic covering and then you get to the lights. I did not attach the legs (even though it says must be used with legs) and instead it is sitting almost flush against my fish tank glass top. I say almost because I have a 6 foot tank with two bracing bars in the middlle and I have two of these lights, both of which are lifted about an 1/8th of an inch due to it resting on top of the bracing bars. The lights get warm, almost hot, but never too hot to touch (depending on your heat threshold).

Although I did fill my tank to the brim the other day which brought my anarachas very close to the light, I think too close because the top leaves closest to the lights got burned/bleached or something and turned brown/yellow and became very thin. So if you place these directly onto your glass top, be weary of filling the water to within 1/2 an inch of the light as these are very strong lights. That being said, I have 3 different species (sub species?) of anubius plants and some moss balls. The anubius, after only a week of this light, are a brighter green that I've ever before scene in my tanks. I used to have a daylight bulb and a blue actinic bulb. These Aquatic Life lights come with a daylight bulb and a red/pink looking bulb. There must be something in that red light because my plants love it. However my moss balls are a little less enamoured since two of them are in direct light and they are slowly getting bleached (they are on week 3 and arent recovering) where as another two are in semi shaded areas and are bright green. So its hit or miss with which plant likes what light, but these are definitely strong lights.

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 36-Inch

Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights, 36-InchFrom the description and pictures, I wasn't 100% certain what to expect. When it arrived, I thought the box was empty it was so light. Unfortunately, the box was not sealed well and the contents had come out of it, but the light worked well none the less. I was previously using a standard T-5 bulb light fixture, until the ballast broke and needed replacing. I was going to get the same one until I saw this one. I loved the idea of having something that didn't heat up as much as my previous ballast, was lighter, and had an evening setting. I was expecting some form of Christmas lights or mini bulbs in the ballast, but it's not (I really can't explain how the light works).

My fish tank hangs on the wall like a picture frame, so it is has vertical depth (more than 2-ft) and yet it is skinny, with only 4" of width available for a light. This one fit beautifully and lights up the tank very well.

My husband recognized the ballast and immediately got excited. He saw it on TV for "new inventions" and this was considered new technology. The white light is almost blinding compared to the old T-5. Even the blue lights make the tank glow bright blue. The fish seem happy with it.

The only unfortunate thing about this technology is that when the lights fail, you have to replace the whole ballast. I just hope it has a good life expectancy in the end. Until then, I'm pretty happy.

Just received this as a replacement for my old fluorescent tube light. It's slightly brighter and whiter than my old light, but looks nice. I am hoping it quickly replenishes my algae growth for my two hungry plecostomi. The moon light function is pretty much useless by itself, but adds a little richer color to the full on mode. The moon light is simply a few blue leds. It looks nice, but not natural. Good for a bar area setup. Giving it 5 stars for quality, aesthetics and value.

I like this light for reefs on a budget reason its not great is there is no shimmer effect in my 40 gallon salt water breeder & there is a dead spot in the middle showing with the moonlight (only)on as there are 2 seprate panels that meet in the middle its brightness is perefect put it could use 4 more blue leds with the white leds on for just a slight difference in daytime color BUT ill keep it just for the fact its slighty cheaper than buying 2-36" flurorecent ballasts & bulbs

I bought this LED light to replace my fresh water tank T5's and so far the lumens are nice. The build quality is good...and the only bad thing I have to say about this light is the following:

1) LED's have no individual lens, so the light output is sorta spread out a bit.

2) No separate power cord for the blue and the white light. There is separate switch but same cord, so it is impossible to put them on a timer.

Lazer Brite Reflective Dog Leash, 6-Foot, Skull and Cross Bones

Lazer Brite Reflective Dog Leash, 6-Foot, Skull and Cross Bonesthis leash is designed for a cat...it is 1/2" wide and thin would be best suited for a cats or micro dogs...dont think it should pop up as match to collar that is sold with it that is 1" wide and for large dog...a weiner dog could blow through this one....

I may have misread the description. This leash is only about 1/2 or 3/4" wide. The reflective surface is only on one side of the leash. I have a 65lb lab. Don't really trust it. I think it would be just fine for a small dog.

I have bought this product before at my local pet store. This time I decided to order it online. So my review for this order is that it does not work due to the fact Amazon shipped an empty box to me. Thanks Amazon.

Lees Aquarium Original Undergravel Filter 20 Inch

Lees Aquarium Original Undergravel Filter 20 InchBasically you get what you pay for with this one. Yes it gets the job done but you may have to add your own tweaks to it. First, the plastic is very thin and brittle which is a bad combination with poorly fitting parts and no assembly instructions. All you have to go by is the picture on the box, if I had never used a filter like this before I probably would have been very confused. The parts fit poorly so when you are trying to fit them together they break. Second, the "airstones" are just this plastic foam stuff that makes too big bubbles so I replaced them with real airstones. Third, for some reason the bubbles don't flow nicely, but build up and then loudly blup out every 10 seconds or so. Finally, it doesn't come with ALL of the tubing you will need, only the two short pieces that come directly from the bubblers, you will need to buy a T-valve and a long piece of tubing to connect it all to your air pump. So if you're trying to save a few bucks this will serve it's purpose after some frustration, but if you are looking for a quality product.. keep looking.

Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour

Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hourI currently own a 55 gallon tank with a pleco and an oscar, and this filter has kept my tank crystal clear since i got it. If you know oscars then you know how messy they can be. I highly recommend this filter to anyone with a 55 gallon tank. My roommate has a 150 gallon with 7 red devils and two plecos, and has the Fluval 304 (older model to this 305), and even his tank is clear, its not perfect but for being as clear as it is with only a filter made for a 70 gallon tank, i can honestly say that Fluval filters are GREAT products.

I purchased the Fluval 305 filter (from a different vendor) to replace an older Penguin 350. The install was in an established 55 gallon aquarium with two, 5 year old (mated pair) Jack Dempsey cichlids and several small Cory catfish. The set up was fairly easy and the water is now absolutely clear. The fish seem more active now, I'm guessing because of better quality water and the better overall circulation. The Penguin would do a good job of circulating water in one part of my (rather long) tank but the other half never got much flow. With the 305, I am able to angle the filtered water output so that I get total tank circulation. Also, the Fluval has much more filter media space and options, that makes a BIG difference. The price of the two above mentioned filters is way different. The Penguin 350 is a good filter, the Fluval is an excellent filter. The Fluval is truly worth the extra $$ and I would recommend the Fluval 305 to anyone. :)

Ken

Edit 12 Feb 2010 added:

As a FYI. The FLUVAL '3 Plus' filter pads WILL NOT fit this unit (too well, it is a little loose). You will want to purchase filter pads that says '204/304' on the package, and that works fine. The 204/304 media that I bought came in a two pack, four pads are required for a complete replacement. From my limited experience with this media It is 100% reusable, can be rinsed, and is fairly rugged. You may not need to replace it, I like to have some replacements on hand 'just in case' ;)

Buy Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour Now

First there are a few things to consider I have a 40gal tropical tank which is more than a little over capacity (fish-wise). I have had other filters in the past on other 29-55 gal tanks. Given this information this is one of the best filters I have had the pleasure of owning. This unit will keep the water very clear if you are willing to load the media in it correctly and do just a bit of maintenance. I also recommend using the "polisher" pads about 3-4 times a year as it does a fine job of Tidying Up. For those that have complained about priming when reconnecting Fill the filter with water at about the same temp as your tank. Then after connecting the unit and starting it up, gently rock the filter from front to back to release any trapped air. Also I would recommend NEVER changing the Biomass in the final stage Unless you have a major disaster in the tank. Also keep a spare impeller and outer seal on hand (just in case) while you may never need them, it would be better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. My personal mix of media is Carbon(very thoroughly rinsed) in the 1st stage, Clearmax in the second stage (followed on top by a polishing pad *Temporary*) then a mix of Eheim Substrat Pro and Fluval BIOMAX. Personally I would recommend against changing all of the Clearmax at one time, I change one side then the other in rotation. Similarly I would recommend against changing both front and back sponges at the same time. I replace the front and lightly clean the rear and rotate them (rear to front) quarterly as more than this is not needed and reduces beneficial bacteriological filtration. NOTE: While I am not an Expert, my fish are happy with my maintenance routine and the old man in the tank (a common pleco) is over a foot long after a couple of years and started as a mere 1.5 inch baby.

I have had my Fluval 305 for 4 months now.

Pros:

-Quite, very surprised at how very quite this guy is. I can hardly tell anything is on.

-great concept. Water is first filtered by mechanical filtration (sponges), then it makes its way upward through chemical (carbon) and biological filtration (clay beads). I have found the carbon replacement bags to be overly priced. My suggestion is to just buy yourself some bulk filter carbon and a filter bag and save yourself some money.

-Since the pump pulls the water through the canister, you don't risk shrimp or small fish that might get sucked up in the intake being chopped up by the pump. Instead they get as far as the sponge in the canister and stop there.

-Great customer service, called them one time and was never put on hold or heard nice music. The phone rings and someone actually answers.

Cons:

-Leak after 4 months. Not sure what caused it. The leak only occurs when the pump is off and a siphon has been created-creating higher water pressure in the canister. So I didn't experience a big leak in the middle of the night, I didn't notice. Rather it was after a water change. Customer service was great. However turn around time is about 10 days. Which means you'll have to find alternative filtration for that time. Also my O-ring was well lubricated with petroleum jelly after each cleaning-so it wasn't the problem. The customer service suggested a hairline crack, she said they have seen that before.

-I thought the clips on the side of the tank were a bit flimsy, as well as the flap that inserts the hose into the canister. I was expecting both to be more durable and create a tighter squeeze. Neither did on my canister. Maybe mine was a dud.

Overall I liked the product. I would give it 4.5 stars if the leak hadn't occurred. So I am discounting 1/2 a star for flimsy latches and flimsy hose flap and 1 star for the leak-which could have been a lot more drastic then it was. I will see how the replacement works and how customer service ultimately handles my claim. Will update.

Update:

Customer service was amazing. I am sure not many of the Hagen products have problems since I never was waiting on the phone very long for support. As mentioned above I noticed a leak in my filter once the siphon had started but the pump wasn't on-meaining there was water pressure in the canister from the siphon. I think once the pump was one the water pressure was less because the pump was moving water out of the siphon. I called customer service and they had me send out the entire canister for inspection. That cost about $14, which I paid. 10 days later I emailed them for an update. I think they had forgotten about me, because they asked for info on when I sent the product and the tracking number, etc. Once they got this info they immediately responded that they had discovered a hairline fracture in the motor head and would be sending me a new unit. I received the new unit in the mail 3 days later. However they forgot to return my canister-just the motor head. I called them about this and they apologized and overnighted me a canister, which I got the next day. I think complete turn around time was 15 days.

Since then this unit has worked just like the old, no leaks for me. The clips on this new unit are a bit tighter and require a bit more muscle to close the head onto the canister. The housing unit clip is still pretty flimsy, but it works, so i guess no need to complain about that. I think it deserves a 4.5 star rating and would certainly give it 5 stars if the unit last a few years. Since all my other hagen products have lasted forever, I don't see why this wouldn't.

Want Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour Discount?

I have had this filter for almost a year and I have yet to find any fault with it. It holds lots of filter media (charcoal, ammo-carb, etc.) which gives it the ability I had hoped for long intervals between maintenance. I currently have this connected to a 29 gal. tetra tank (the fish, not the brand) and while I know that this filter is over-sized, it provides great filtration and the high rate of water flow (I have it wide open) seems to please my riverine tetras and they will frequently play in the current (a habit that seems to be related to feeding they grab food as it flows by). If I choose, I can use this for a larger tank in the future. The built-in primer pump is a great feature and makes it very easy to get a flow started. You will only need to use it once, unless you allow air into the intake line.

Setting up the filter will take some time. This is not a "hang on the back and plug it in" filter. You will find it much easier to install in an empty, or nearly so, aquarium. There are hoses to be cut and suction cups to hold them against the back wall of the tank. As you are cutting the hoses to fit, it will be obvious why this moves so much more water than the hanging style, and because you can mount the hoses at opposite ends of the tank, you will get superior filtration across the whole tank. I can easily go 6 weeks without a change I have 45 tetras and one plecostomus in the tank, so it is not a light load. I check chemical levels every week, and have never had an increase in ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites. The water is crystal clear. If you are adding this to an existing setup, reuse the old water so that there is a good supply of bacteria. The filter media will hang onto some of the bacteria (as it should) leaving a shortage in the tank. All new water would be inviting an ammonia bloom, so pick up some ammonia neutralizer to have on hand just in case (not a bad thing to have in your permanent maintenance kit). Take a few minutes to understand the logic behind the media placement, and you will be able to fine tune this filter to your individual needs. You can have more than one media per chamber, and you have six cambers to work with. Each chamber holds about three times the media present in the bio-bag of a hanging filter, so it is easy to see why it filters so well. I can't imagine ever using a different filter.

Coralife 00232 Digital Thermometer

Coralife 00232 Digital ThermometerI bought this for accuracy but it isn't really. I went online and found a ton of blogs where people were going off on this thermometer. Basically everyone was saying how it was always showing a cooler temp than the tank actually was. Everyone was "cooking" their fish and or plants because they kept turning up their heaters to compensate. Be careful. I bought four different mercury thermometers to test this out. They all read warmer temperatures than the digital one was showing.

All the blogs I found started from around 3 to 4 years ago to present. I guess the company hasn't quite got the quality control corrected yet. Some people's digital thermometers were way more off than mine. Some people said they bought several more and kept getting incorrect readings.

Mine always showed 2 degrees cooler than was the actual temperature. Be careful. Be warned.

This is the most inaccurate thermometer I have ever used.

I own 4 of these and they are all at least 4 degrees off from each other, most are 7 degrees off.

I actually have two of these on the same aquarium for the past 2 months and they read as follows right now:

One on the right corner: 73.4

One on the left corner: 77.8

You decide how good these are and if you want to chance it. Me, I'm replacing mine with something a lot more reliable.

If you are used to using something like the stick on ones on your freshwater aquarium this will be fine. If you have a saltwater reef system like I do you will not be happy with it at all.

Buy Coralife 00232 Digital Thermometer Now

I bought this thermometer for my reef tank about 4 years ago and find it to be extremely inaccurate. I've experienced the same problem with the thermometer as others have already commented; lower than actual temperature readings. It wouldn't be that much of a problem if the difference between the actual temperature and what is displayed were constant but it's not. There are wild swings in the temperature reading. Right now, the actual temperature in my tank is 82F but what is displayed is 72.1F almost a 10 degree difference. Yesterday it was reading around 78F. I have two other thermometers in my tank and they are reading the same temperature +/0.1 degree. I can't figure out what makes the coralife have such varying temperature readings since it's been in the same location in the tank from day one and I have one of my other thermometers no more than an inch away and that one reads accurately. Bottom line, don't buy it but if you do decide to purchase this product, compare the temperature reading with another thermometer for a week or two.

The probe side suction cup doesn't stay where I put it in the tank and keeps coming off. So the probe just floats in the middle of the tank...not fun. The off button is a pain also. This is a poorly designed thermometer and I would not recommend it to others. I will look for a better one for my tank.

I just purchased this thermometer, and it is a full 5 degrees off! I have 2 other thermometers and they are matching each other, thank goodness, otherwise I'd be cooking my fish right now. Bad product.

Hagen Elite 5-Way Air Control Valve

Hagen Elite 5-Way Air Control ValveThe whole point of these products is to fine tune the air output of each outlet in order to set the function needed perfectly. For example, an air powered ornament needs a different amount of air than a bubble wall, than an under gravel filter, etc.

This product fails this big time. It's impossible to fine tune anything because the knobs don't turn smoothly, if at all. I have to use pliers on them to get anything different from full on or full off and the sticky action of the valves makes even crude settings impossible.

I would have been better off using a rats nest of tee's.

Bought two of these and one knob broke off on install. Did not want to bother with returning them and tried to use them anyway. After about 3-4 adjusting almost all of the knobs had broken off and ended up buying stainless screws and installing them for the knobs instead. Very disappointing indeed!!!

looks good but right from the start didnt work. as soon as you open a valve down the line from the pump the previous valves stop working. plus the knob dont stop turning in either direction making trouble shooting difficult. what did work was a splitter and a 5cent valve

This control valve works just fine and the price is right. I would have given this product 5 stars if the valves weren't so tight which made adjusting a little tricky.

With the Item being plastic, I was pleasantly surprised at how durable it is. I will buy more of these in the future.

KONG Squeezz Dumbbell with Rope for Dogs, Large , Colors Vary

KONG Squeezz Dumbbell with Rope for Dogs, Large , Colors VaryMy dogs have really liked this toy. They carry it off, though, and then I can't find it LOL. The rope seems to be very durable and hasn't come out or unwoven like a lot of ropes do. It squeeks, is easy to toss, can be chewed on without distroying it. For 3 hard chewing Aussies like I have it has been a great toy.
