Aqua-Glo Fluorescent Aquarium Bulb

Aqua-Glo Fluorescent Aquarium Bulb, 20-Watt/24-InchArrived quickly & works as described. My Aquatic plants & fish like it! It DOES NOT put off the yellow cast that some brands do. Very nice!

I've now had 2 in a row of these go bad .. first one failed after no less than 30 minutes .. its replacement only lasted 24 hours. I had one of the same brand before that lasted for 1.5 years (if not more).

Received the bulb very quickly but was disappointed to find that it didn't work and it had to be returned. Ended switching to LED light, really like it.

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic Rings

Penn Plax Cascade Nylon Filter with Biological Ceramic RingsThis does the same thing as the charcoal with a lot less mess. It is a pain to have to remove the charcoal packet every time I put in an algae treatment. I just set up a new aquarium and for some reason the algae has been very difficult control. Correction, it has been out of control but I'm winning the battle. I recommend these and believe you will like them too.

Have not used them yet but arrived as expected. Have read about ceramic rings and their usefulness for maintaining helpful bacteria in aquarium filtration. Will update after having used them.

Doggie Dooley In-Ground Waste Digester Systems - Model 2000

Doggie Dooley In-Ground Waste Digester Systems - Model 2000You will need a hole digger to dig the 4' hole. Initially add 4 gallons of water and the "stuff" and you're set. Once a week add one gallon of water and table spoon of the "stuff" and that's all you need do. Mine has been installed for a week and I like it. Be advised the vender does not include a scoop for the poop.

Co2 Bubble Counter

Co2 Bubble CounterI've been using this on my 20 gallon planted tank for about 4 years and so far it's been great. The only issue I've ever had is when I clean it. Taking it apart and cleaning it is super easy and I do it about once a year. The first 2 times I had a bit of trouble putting it back together. The O-ring on the fitting really makes it a tight fit and it has to go back together just right. I later found out that most people put a tiny amount of Vaseline or even a drop of cooking oil on the O-ring when they clean em out and that makes it much simpler to put back together, and besides, it's good for the O-ring. Kinda wish I knew about that sooner. I thought about giving this 4 stars but because it's lasted for so long (outlasted 3 filters) and is still as good as the day I got it... 5 seems fitting.

Oh, the other reviewer seems to have thought this was a Co2 diffuser. It's not. This is a bubble counter that goes on the outside of the tank.

Big Co2 bubbles coming out from the side of the disc. I tried to fix it by using waterproof glue but it doesnt solve the problem.

I used it for just 2 days and paid around $24. A waste of money. I went back using a glass diffuser for $9 and works better.

Not worth even for just 1 STAR Rating. Dont buy it.

API Freshwater Master Test Kit

API Freshwater Master Test KitI recently started up a freshwater tank and am learning the ropes as I go. I was doing some research on what to expect and what supplies I needed. I came across this product in a search and after reading other product reviews I decided to splurge and get this test kit. I think out of all the ones I reveiwed this is the only one that had all the 4 major tests in one case with ease of use that even a child can do (with supervision).

I do have an added tip for all you PetSmart/PetCo shopppers. Print out this page and take it in and they will price match. The PetSmart (instore) price is $29.99 and after showing them the ad I saved over $13, and I didn't even have to pay for shipping! :) GREAT DEAL!!!

This is a good all-purpose test kit for someone beginning freshwater fish-keeping. It's also the most economical way I've found to purchase a wide variety of tests (it contains test solutions for pH, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates) in large volume. The directions are clear and concise and the color coded cards make readings easy.

Buy API Freshwater Master Test Kit Now

Four of five tests are fairly straightforward. The ammonia test, however, requires mixing the 5ml of tank water with 10 drops of one solution, shaking a second solution bottle for 30 seconds, adding 10 drops from it, then shaking the test tube for one minute, and then waiting 5 minutes to test color against a chart. Seems a bit much, no? That being said, this process isn't any more difficult than any other system I've seen, and it seems to be accurate. The color chart is waterproof, though the instruction manual isn't, and due to the moist nature of its application, make sure to memorize instructions quickly. API is by far the most highly recommended test kit on every freshwater tank forum I've read, and I found it here a good bit cheaper than at my local (chain) pet store. Be aware that the test tubes are glass and will occasionally shatter when trying to juggle all 4 at once, but I've only once needed to test for everything the first day the kit came in. Nitrates are probably the only regular (weekly) test you'll have to do outside of changes to the tank, such as adding fish or changing substrate or filter media.

FYI each bottle has a printed "Lot Number" on the back, the last four digits of which are the month and year of manufacture. Anything over three years or so is getting old, and you'll probably want an exchange unless you test with great frequency. These chems definitely have a finite shelf life.

Oh, and anyone who has live plants in a tank will want phosphates and KH test kits as well.

Read Best Reviews of API Freshwater Master Test Kit Here

There are a few excellent points about this test kit:

1) buying here saves you about 50% from the retail pet store

2) you get 800+ tests for ~ $17 vs. 25 tests w/ strips

3) results are far more accurate with liquid test kits like this one when compared to dipsticks

Note that of the 5 tests you can do with this, three of them require 5 minute waits before you read the colors, so it's not as fast as a dipstick. But honestly, this is such an economic choice, and it's accuracy far exceeds quick strips that it's ridiculous to buy them. Get this kit!

Want API Freshwater Master Test Kit Discount?

I ordered the test kit on jan 21st and it took tell feb 1st to get which seemed long but maybe i am just spoiled with prime. I did not take any stars off for the shipping time.

My main issue is the description is false. It clearly says:

"Freshwater Master Test Kit is a complete kit for testing tap water & aquarium water.Tests water 6 different ways to protect tropical fish from dangerous water conditions.Tests include: freshwater pH, ammonia, nitrite, high range pH, GH & KH, 4 test tubes, tray."

Well where is the GH & KH kit? It seems that the description is wrong. It says the kits are included but they are not. The ONLY reason i bought this was because it had the GH and KH kit included and i found it silly to spend the money on just a GH and KH kit when i could just get the other items for a only a little bit more.

Needless to say i am frustrated. I waited 12 days to get the wrong thing.I guess i should have read the text on the picture and not the actual product description.

Como 50 Black Aquarium Fish Tank Filter Bio-Balls Filtration

Como 50 Black Aquarium Fish Tank Filter Bio-Balls FiltrationThese were a great design very sturdy and ideal for any filter system for a tank or pond. Highly recommended

These are a bit smaller than I expected them to be, but they are still a great deal. I'd say they are about 3/4" in diameter. They came in a black mesh bag which I am using to contain them in my filter. I just put them in today. I'll update my review again after they have been in there for about a month to let you know what I think of them them. But so far, so good. And the price was a great deal! Can't complain about that at all!

These bio balls have some weight to them. I did not use the net zippered bag as I divided the balls up in my filtration system.

Fish Tank Aquarium Light 36" 2x39w T5 HO Actinic Fixture

Fish Tank Aquarium Light 36' 2x39w T5 HO Actinic FixtureI ordered these lights and followed the directions according to the manual. I live in Northern California and they shipped from here so I didn't have to wait long. I have a 65 Gallon upright reef tank, with SPS and LPS corals, so I wanted some affordable but great lighting for my corals. Assembly is easy and the blue lights are crisp and clear like the ocean! I would highly recommend this product to other marine enthusiasts and give these lights 5 stars!

Zoo Med AquaSun T5-HO Double Light Linear Fluorescent Hood, 36-Inch

Zoo Med AquaSun T5-HO Double Light Linear Fluorescent Hood, 36-InchI have only had the light for a few weeks and it is performing well so far. I was some what disappointed to find only one reflector for the two bulbs instead of one for each bulb. One of the ballasts is making a slight buzzing noise which is moderately irritating. The buzzing ballast will be replaced soon with a good quality Fulham ballast. This fixture is a decent quality product for the money.

I gave it four stars because it does not have separate power cords for the bulbs. Some people like to have Actinic come on first and then the daylight bulbs with timers. Other than this it is great, built well, easy to install. Interesting that they put the on/off buttons on the front, not sure yet if I like this or not.

Bulbs I purchased as seen in the video:

This light is very sleek and professional looking. I like how it hinges so you can lift it and access the tank a little better. It also have a really nice silver reflector backing the inside. Please don't forget to peal off the protective plastic film that's on the water shield or the light won't penetrate the water like it should and could melt. The best part is I saw this exact light fixture in a 30" size at PetCo today for $199.99!!!!!! If you're going to get this light please do yourself a favor and buy it here on Amazon. Even with shipping it's a steal! I would also suggest you to buy your bulbs here on amazon also because I am having a hard time finding the right bulbs at the store around me. I bought a 36" bulb but I guess I got some sizing measurement wrong because its too long. You can buy the bulbs that Amazon suggest you buy or you can go hunting around. Personally I'm going to take the entire light fixture to the store with me to get the right bulbs.

My husband bought the hood to give extra light for live plants, and to make the fish more visible. This does this well. Right now the 2 hoods on this 125 gallon tank are just placed on the glass, and lifted off for feed and maintenance. The lights do give quite a bit of heat, but it is fall here in Central Wisconsin and we keep our house cool. If the room were this hood would be used is already quite warm, this could be a problem as it heats up the water.

Want Zoo Med AquaSun T5-HO Double Light Linear Fluorescent Hood, 36-Inch Discount?

First light arrived missing one of the side brackets.

Returning the unit could not have been easier.

Second light arrived, looked to be complete, but upon further inspection, it is missing the wire suspension kit.

The unit itself must be attached directly to the aquarium, meaning that you cannot attach it if you're using a hood.

So without the suspension kit, you have to decide if you want the hood or the light.

Digital Mini Automatic LCD Aquarium Fish Tank Food Feeder Timer Home up to 4 Feeding Times

Digital Mini Automatic LCD Aquarium Fish Tank Food Feeder Timer Home up to 4 Feeding TimesThe instructions were simple and easy to follow. The timer is very accurate, It hasn't lost or gained any time in two weeks.

Adjusting the food amount takes some time, and occasionally isn't consistent and will dump a little more than you want. All in all it's definitely worth the money.

The unit is easy to program and works well with pellet food. It's less consistent with flakes. I recommend testing it over a piece of paper a few times to fine tune the dispenser adjustment.

Also, make sure that the unit and its mounting clamp is suitable for your tank. I had a little difficulty finding a spot that cleared my lights and I had to come up with a temporary cover that allows the food to drop. The food is released through a trap door and I had to lower my water level a little bit so that it didn't sweep through the water on its way around.

Another word of advice: throw the included batteries away and supply fresh ones. Mine died during our vacation and I came back to some pretty hungry fish.

Except for the battery issue, I am pretty happy with the performance.

Buy Digital Mini Automatic LCD Aquarium Fish Tank Food Feeder Timer Home up to 4 Feeding Times Now

Look buyers, this cost me only $9.20 + P&H, the other vendor sell it at much higher price. It works great. I have one almost exactly look alike except it's bigger. Since I only use it when I will be out for more than couple of days, I keep on forgetting how to set the time and feeding time. That's when I mesh up the adjust button, everything else work. It didn't happened right away, it took five years of guessing and pressing hard.

Like:

Four feeding time

There's a repeat for every feeding time, twice

It's moisture resistant

Feeder container can be opened to place food (convenient)

Con:

The vise is narrow, good for smaller edge aquarium

There's a transparent barrel that turns to dispense food and the amount to dispense depend how much the gaps is opened. It filters depend on food size rather than quantity. You have to do a test to see if quantity is enough and if not use the repeat option per feed or add more feeding schedule time.

It could have been useless for me if I didn't have the old one which I use as a spare parts. I reused the vise from the old to the new feeder, thanks is fits. If what I have described fit your aquarium, this is a Great auto feeder. The larger size is AF-2005D and the mini size is AF-2009D. If you need the larger one then search for it. The food drum container is enough for two weeks dispensing I believed, the large size is really large than the mini, good at least for a month.

This is the second one I have bought, the first one quit working after two months and the new one I ordered, once you put the batteries in it you couldn't read the readout to set it.

Want Digital Mini Automatic LCD Aquarium Fish Tank Food Feeder Timer Home up to 4 Feeding Times Discount?

I purchased 2 of these units the displays are hard to read seems like some of the voltages are off when weaker batteries are in displays are good. As long as you can read the display the units work great it's hard to read with new batteries. Also remember to set the arrows one or two of them to set the cycles if not units will not work. Good for cheap.

PondCare Melafix Liquid Remedy - 64 FL OZ (1.89 liters)

PondCare Melafix Liquid Remedy - 64 FL OZI have been using this product for almost ten years to treat ulcers, fin rot and just anything that looks abnormal on my koi and goldfish. The directions are very easy to follow. As far as treatment goes this stuff has corrected minor fin rot and ulcers usually completely within about two weeks. You will start to see a noticable difference in about a week. This is best to always have on hand so that as soon as you see something that is out of the ordinary with your fish you can apply it.

I've used this product for years, I've seen amazing results in very short time so I wont trust anything else

I have a large (450 gal) freshwater African Cichlid tank. If you have a large tank it is much cheaper to buy aquarium water conditioners, medications, etc. made for ponds. The only difference it that the chemical is more concentrated so you end up using less/gallon.I generally use Pimafix if I see any visible damage and I use Melafix more often as a regular water treatment. I am pleased with the results.

I started a pond and was clueless...

2nd season had issues with flashing fish. I bought this... but I think if I had learned about salt before this the salt alone might have solved my issues. This messed up the growth of some of my water plants (but I was well warned before hand) so I can't blame the product.

Just try salt... once you do that... then this stuff is good to have

It may seem silly to offer a review of this stuff, but without it , my pondfish would never survive some of the issues that occur in the lawnpond. And with goldfish any injury or health problem needs to be treated immediately. Much like the previous review, it's worked miracles. I'm never without a bottle on hand.

Jardin Tree Style Plastic Fish Tank Ornament Aquarium Plant, Blue

Jardin Tree Style Plastic Fish Tank Ornament Aquarium Plant, BlueWhen I received this product it was very compacted and not fluffy. You have to fluff it up like a fake Christmas tree, then it can get really poofy or what ever you want. The one that I received was not as blue as I would have preferred(or as shown in picture) Also the blue that was used was not quite as bright enough for what I expected it to be. It was about 50% blue and 50% white, which kind of through off how I wanted my tank to look having it look like a tree is cool, and the little green shrubs at the bottom of it area a nice touch. It looks good covered in gravel. The bottom stand is a weight so the little blue tree doesn't float away. If it was bluer I would buy this again. I will add a few pictures of it too.

Beautiful! I am very pleased. I didnt expect it to be that big. And it just wow' s my fish tank. Buy it, u will be amazed. more beautiful than the pic.

This gravel looks great in my betta's 5 gallon "natural" aquarium, though I bought the 5 lb size. It is much lighter and much more attractive (in my opinion) than the standard Petco River Rock Shallow Creek Aquarium Gravel, 20 lbs.. I find the River Rock one to be too dark and, frankly, ugly. The size is great and perfect for the roots of my Anubias. The light color accentuates the colors of my fish and decor.

Synthetic Coral Deep Blue Professional Replica Table 18x7x19.5inches

Synthetic Coral Deep Blue Professional Replica Table 18x7x19.5inchesDeep Blue creates the most realistic and beautiful Faux coral you'll find. Each piece is fashioned by a hand sculpt and a mold is created. The corals are made from a fresh and salt water safe cold resin and the detail is nothing short of amazing. Over the years I've collected many pieces for my tanks and own different sizes of Staghorn, Mangrove root (not a coral) and many others. All have surpassed my expectations and this outstanding representation of Table Corals no exception. In fact I think it's the "show piece" of the entire collection.

Using replica coral isn't just less expensive than actual dried coral, it protects our delicate reef systems which as you may already know are compromised world wide and many are failing. If you keep live corals these blend in easily and add a great deal of visual impact and make a sramatic impact to most any tank and any decor. They are of course a magnet for algae but then what isn't?

The good news is these pieces can be bleached. The ratio for safe bleaching should be one part bleach to 10 parts water. When all traces of algae are gone run and rinse with clean cold water until all traces of the scent of bleach are gone. Prior to placing the pieces back into an aquarium it's important to neutralize any traces of bleach with a product like PRIME by SeaChem after that you're good to go.

The coral is especially nice if you run some LED air wands behind and or in front of the piece. I use white and Lunar blue and find the new bendable LED bubble wands by Aqueon the best yet. The LED lights are clear and bright, the bubbles uniform and each wand can be bent along the base of the coral which creates spectacular shadows while illuminating the branches from beneath.

Unlike cheaper alternatives all Deep Blue Corals are as intricate in detail at both front back and sides so postioning the piece opens lot's of creative opportunity. This particular piece is concave a bit so if you have that side facing the back your fish can easily swim behind it. Like all of the corals made by Deep Bluekeep in mind they're fragilebut if you handle them with care they last a lifetime.

This beautiful piece makes a gorgeous addition to any tank.

Hagen AquaClear 30 Nylon Bag, 2-Pack

Hagen AquaClear 30 Nylon Bag, 2-PackThe shipping was fast and the bags themselves are good quality. Have been using them for a few months now and they are holding up just fine. The mesh hasen't ripped or rotted and looks to offer many more months of service.

Filter floss seems to be more effective than standard foam, so I bought this bag. Only complaint is that I wish it used ziptie design as the strings are a bit of a pain to tie. MADE IN CHINA

Buy Hagen AquaClear 30 Nylon Bag, 2-Pack Now

Decent small media bag...the drawstrings are not worth using. I use a small cable tie instead. They don't hold much, but they are a good way to add fresh charcoal to my power filters. I rinse the main cartridge and then use them over and over till they cannot pass water easily. The bags keep a fresh supply of charcoal or ammo carb in the filter. I was using my wife's discarded panty hose and this was fine, but I decided to just buy some cheap bags. If I need more bags I will probably get a larger size with a (hopefully) more manageable closure.

R2 36 Inch Signature Series Aquarium Moonlight

R2 36 Inch Signature Series Aquarium MoonlightI bought the 24" version from That Pet Place, and after realized that I paid more than the Mfr's Suggested Retail price of $46. While I love the moonlight LED's affect on my 26 Gal. Flat Back Hex freshwater tank, I don't like paying more than the Mfr. suggests I pay. I called TPP and a mgr. gave me what I wanted, a $7.59 product for free. All the other sizes are priced below MSRP at TPP, so I think my price was a mistake. I also, have called and emailed the Mfr with two questions: 1. What is the wattage per LED, and 2. Does the spectrum of these LED's have any kind of beneficial affect on live plants? They have been unresponsive so far after 5 days, and someone at R2 Soultions said the one person that can answer my question on "spectrum" would answer me three days ago. However, I am definitely enjoying these moonlights that I leave on all night, since they don't seem to disturb the sleep of my fish.

5/3/11 UPDATE = Thanks to That Pet Place, I now have a new unit. I'm glad I didn't have to deal directly with the mfr.! There is a six months warranty on these that my seller has authority to handle warranty issues on, and my first one lasted only 5 1/2 months! Three of the twelve LED's in my 24" unit went out for some reason. My replacement seems to illuminate much brighter than my first one ever did, so I'm wondering if the mfr. has improved these lights since I first bought mine?

This light is very flimsy but is very bright and penetrates deep into my 65 gal high tank. My only complaint is that the screws that hold the end caps on were loose and one was just rattling around in the box, but for the price compared to others on the market it is great. I only gave 3 stars due the fact that i had to walk to the junk drawer and do somebody elses job and tighten the screws. As for longevity of the product i don't know yet. I only have this for a few hours.

Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour

Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hourI currently own a 55 gallon tank with a pleco and an oscar, and this filter has kept my tank crystal clear since i got it. If you know oscars then you know how messy they can be. I highly recommend this filter to anyone with a 55 gallon tank. My roommate has a 150 gallon with 7 red devils and two plecos, and has the Fluval 304 (older model to this 305), and even his tank is clear, its not perfect but for being as clear as it is with only a filter made for a 70 gallon tank, i can honestly say that Fluval filters are GREAT products.

I purchased the Fluval 305 filter (from a different vendor) to replace an older Penguin 350. The install was in an established 55 gallon aquarium with two, 5 year old (mated pair) Jack Dempsey cichlids and several small Cory catfish. The set up was fairly easy and the water is now absolutely clear. The fish seem more active now, I'm guessing because of better quality water and the better overall circulation. The Penguin would do a good job of circulating water in one part of my (rather long) tank but the other half never got much flow. With the 305, I am able to angle the filtered water output so that I get total tank circulation. Also, the Fluval has much more filter media space and options, that makes a BIG difference. The price of the two above mentioned filters is way different. The Penguin 350 is a good filter, the Fluval is an excellent filter. The Fluval is truly worth the extra $$ and I would recommend the Fluval 305 to anyone. :)

Ken

Edit 12 Feb 2010 added:

As a FYI. The FLUVAL '3 Plus' filter pads WILL NOT fit this unit (too well, it is a little loose). You will want to purchase filter pads that says '204/304' on the package, and that works fine. The 204/304 media that I bought came in a two pack, four pads are required for a complete replacement. From my limited experience with this media It is 100% reusable, can be rinsed, and is fairly rugged. You may not need to replace it, I like to have some replacements on hand 'just in case' ;)

Buy Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour Now

First there are a few things to consider I have a 40gal tropical tank which is more than a little over capacity (fish-wise). I have had other filters in the past on other 29-55 gal tanks. Given this information this is one of the best filters I have had the pleasure of owning. This unit will keep the water very clear if you are willing to load the media in it correctly and do just a bit of maintenance. I also recommend using the "polisher" pads about 3-4 times a year as it does a fine job of Tidying Up. For those that have complained about priming when reconnecting Fill the filter with water at about the same temp as your tank. Then after connecting the unit and starting it up, gently rock the filter from front to back to release any trapped air. Also I would recommend NEVER changing the Biomass in the final stage Unless you have a major disaster in the tank. Also keep a spare impeller and outer seal on hand (just in case) while you may never need them, it would be better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. My personal mix of media is Carbon(very thoroughly rinsed) in the 1st stage, Clearmax in the second stage (followed on top by a polishing pad *Temporary*) then a mix of Eheim Substrat Pro and Fluval BIOMAX. Personally I would recommend against changing all of the Clearmax at one time, I change one side then the other in rotation. Similarly I would recommend against changing both front and back sponges at the same time. I replace the front and lightly clean the rear and rotate them (rear to front) quarterly as more than this is not needed and reduces beneficial bacteriological filtration. NOTE: While I am not an Expert, my fish are happy with my maintenance routine and the old man in the tank (a common pleco) is over a foot long after a couple of years and started as a mere 1.5 inch baby.

I have had my Fluval 305 for 4 months now.

Pros:

-Quite, very surprised at how very quite this guy is. I can hardly tell anything is on.

-great concept. Water is first filtered by mechanical filtration (sponges), then it makes its way upward through chemical (carbon) and biological filtration (clay beads). I have found the carbon replacement bags to be overly priced. My suggestion is to just buy yourself some bulk filter carbon and a filter bag and save yourself some money.

-Since the pump pulls the water through the canister, you don't risk shrimp or small fish that might get sucked up in the intake being chopped up by the pump. Instead they get as far as the sponge in the canister and stop there.

-Great customer service, called them one time and was never put on hold or heard nice music. The phone rings and someone actually answers.

Cons:

-Leak after 4 months. Not sure what caused it. The leak only occurs when the pump is off and a siphon has been created-creating higher water pressure in the canister. So I didn't experience a big leak in the middle of the night, I didn't notice. Rather it was after a water change. Customer service was great. However turn around time is about 10 days. Which means you'll have to find alternative filtration for that time. Also my O-ring was well lubricated with petroleum jelly after each cleaning-so it wasn't the problem. The customer service suggested a hairline crack, she said they have seen that before.

-I thought the clips on the side of the tank were a bit flimsy, as well as the flap that inserts the hose into the canister. I was expecting both to be more durable and create a tighter squeeze. Neither did on my canister. Maybe mine was a dud.

Overall I liked the product. I would give it 4.5 stars if the leak hadn't occurred. So I am discounting 1/2 a star for flimsy latches and flimsy hose flap and 1 star for the leak-which could have been a lot more drastic then it was. I will see how the replacement works and how customer service ultimately handles my claim. Will update.

Update:

Customer service was amazing. I am sure not many of the Hagen products have problems since I never was waiting on the phone very long for support. As mentioned above I noticed a leak in my filter once the siphon had started but the pump wasn't on-meaining there was water pressure in the canister from the siphon. I think once the pump was one the water pressure was less because the pump was moving water out of the siphon. I called customer service and they had me send out the entire canister for inspection. That cost about $14, which I paid. 10 days later I emailed them for an update. I think they had forgotten about me, because they asked for info on when I sent the product and the tracking number, etc. Once they got this info they immediately responded that they had discovered a hairline fracture in the motor head and would be sending me a new unit. I received the new unit in the mail 3 days later. However they forgot to return my canister-just the motor head. I called them about this and they apologized and overnighted me a canister, which I got the next day. I think complete turn around time was 15 days.

Since then this unit has worked just like the old, no leaks for me. The clips on this new unit are a bit tighter and require a bit more muscle to close the head onto the canister. The housing unit clip is still pretty flimsy, but it works, so i guess no need to complain about that. I think it deserves a 4.5 star rating and would certainly give it 5 stars if the unit last a few years. Since all my other hagen products have lasted forever, I don't see why this wouldn't.

Want Fluval 305 External Canister Filter - 110V, 260 gallons per hour Discount?

I have had this filter for almost a year and I have yet to find any fault with it. It holds lots of filter media (charcoal, ammo-carb, etc.) which gives it the ability I had hoped for long intervals between maintenance. I currently have this connected to a 29 gal. tetra tank (the fish, not the brand) and while I know that this filter is over-sized, it provides great filtration and the high rate of water flow (I have it wide open) seems to please my riverine tetras and they will frequently play in the current (a habit that seems to be related to feeding they grab food as it flows by). If I choose, I can use this for a larger tank in the future. The built-in primer pump is a great feature and makes it very easy to get a flow started. You will only need to use it once, unless you allow air into the intake line.

Setting up the filter will take some time. This is not a "hang on the back and plug it in" filter. You will find it much easier to install in an empty, or nearly so, aquarium. There are hoses to be cut and suction cups to hold them against the back wall of the tank. As you are cutting the hoses to fit, it will be obvious why this moves so much more water than the hanging style, and because you can mount the hoses at opposite ends of the tank, you will get superior filtration across the whole tank. I can easily go 6 weeks without a change I have 45 tetras and one plecostomus in the tank, so it is not a light load. I check chemical levels every week, and have never had an increase in ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites. The water is crystal clear. If you are adding this to an existing setup, reuse the old water so that there is a good supply of bacteria. The filter media will hang onto some of the bacteria (as it should) leaving a shortage in the tank. All new water would be inviting an ammonia bloom, so pick up some ammonia neutralizer to have on hand just in case (not a bad thing to have in your permanent maintenance kit). Take a few minutes to understand the logic behind the media placement, and you will be able to fine tune this filter to your individual needs. You can have more than one media per chamber, and you have six cambers to work with. Each chamber holds about three times the media present in the bio-bag of a hanging filter, so it is easy to see why it filters so well. I can't imagine ever using a different filter.
