EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem, Pod

EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem, Small PodI received one of these as a gift about three years ago. I am a hard core believer in "research what you must care for" as once you take a living thing in and state "I shall care for it" you are responsible for a life. Or several, in this case. Rather quickly, I learned that these shrimp are "Halocaridina rubra" AKA "Opae Ula" AKA "Hawaiian Red Shrimp". They are found in small wild pools in the lava rock all over Hawaii. Rather disturbingly, their habitat has been reduced by roughly 90%! Yet people still continue to collect them from the wild. As of now, I have yet to hear a confirmation that the Ecosphere company is, in fact, captive breeding these creatures. If they are, in fact, wild catching these, even from a pool on their own property that they help to maintain, this may have a rather strenuous impact on what is left of the population of these shrimp, given the number of these spheres and "BYOES" they ship out annually.

The sad fact is that the only people truly giving a representation on the current quantity of these available in the wild are the people who are catching them in order to sell to the general public--and of course, it is in their best interest to state that they are plentiful in the wild, as their livelihood depends on it. Granted, this is pure extrapolation, but I think it is, at the very least, a point worthy of consideration before you purchase one of these kits.

These shrimp are slow breeders with small clutch sizes, and a rather high "infant mortality" so to speak. In short, they are a species which much be protected when possible, and encouraged to breed-be it in captivity or in the wild, in the hopes of creating a sustainable population that our children and our children's children will be able to enjoy.

Keep in mind when purchasing an ecosphere that, regardless of all other facts, the very limited environment dramatically discourages breeding and prevents perpetuation of a species that is currently undetermined in status.

Now, skipping the biology and ecology lesson, and on to the ecosphere itself.... As I studied the limited literature and information available on these shrimp, I learned that although there is the odd ecosphere which reaches just that right balance of diatoms, algae, bacteria, shrimp, etc., the vast majority are nutrient starved, and the ecology inside of them, at the microscopic level, becomes damaged and even destroyed. Then you are left with a couple of shrimp that are incredibly hardy, attempting to live in water that is high in ammonia, nitrites, and/or nitrates, with little to no oxygen for breathing, and eating forms of algae that are in fact, not at all nutritious for them. Because these insignificant seeming little creatures have adapted to such an incredible fluctuation of natural habitat in the wild, they are able to withstand starvation for months and even years.

Look at it this way: The average Opae Ula shrimp life span is roughly ten years, with some living upward of 20. Ecosphere happily informs you in the informative brochure that if you take care of them well (ie: set them in the appropriate light and temperature) they will average a whole 2-3 years! So.....1/3rd of their expected lifespan......

Not so good, in all honesty.

The instructions then go on to explain that on occasion customers excitedly announce their shrimp going 8-20+ years. Which really, that's fantastic! But this is the exception, not the rule.

These shrimp are, slowly but surely, starving inside of these closed systems. If the correct bacteria and algae do not grow (and often they do not) then these poor little creatures will shrink a small bit each time they moult their exoskeleton. According to several sources I have read, they will, in fact, consume themselves at a very slow and painful rate.

Again, not to say that some spheres will not survive 20 years plus ND prove this wrong, but, sadly, the vast majority of spheres are going to slowly decline, taking the living denizens inside down with it.

All of this said, I received my little ecosphere, containing four opae ula shrimp, and I chose to believe that I would balance the lighting and the temperature perfectly, since I honestly couldn't figure out how to get the shrimp out. Fast forward two years, and my first shrimp dies. What a wake up call. I felt terrible. All the shrimp were on the small side when I received them, as I had been hoping for closer to the ten year mark from these fellas. I immediately got online once more and researched all that I could. This time I learned how to remove the plug, and so I did. The three remaining shrimp were decanted carefully into a 2.5 gallon cube aquarium that was carefully balanced to match the specific gravity of the water inside the sphere, with a small airstone and an LED light. I will state that when I tested the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate of the water inside of the previously sealed sphere, I was absolutely appalled. I have zebra danios that couldn't have lasted an hour in that water.

In any even, I started off with only the water from the ecosphere, and daily added about half an ounce of the newly mixed sea water, in an attempt to not shock these delicate little creatures. Now that everyone is happily adjusted, I can monitor the amount of food available, do roughly one 50% water change a year, and care for these fascinating little animals interactively, rather than passively. I can respond to their needs and keep a close eye on the quality of their water, and thus, their life. Low and behold, my three shrimp have become roughly ten shrimp in less than a year (exact counts are tough, as they now have many hiding places and I am never sure that some aren't tucked away and hiding! Far more natural and comforting to them than complete exposure as they are subjected to in the spheres!). In fact, I am almost certain that those little reddish jiggy looking things that I noticed in the tank yesterday are, (I hope), more larvae.

Please, I encourage potential owners of ecospheres to research these shrimp and learn what you can before you purchase. If you still choose to purchase them, fine! But please, do make an informed decision.

In all honesty, I have to seriously wonder about the honesty of any company that simply states that they are giving you "ocean shrimp" and does not provide you with a latin species name to look up information and a natural history on the organism. Particularly when it is a company that claims to be encouraging an awareness of ecology, who is selling a species that is so vulnerable in the wild as these little fellows. If they were truly a company encouraging the thoughtful preservation of our ecology, it seems to me as though they would be attempting to inform new owners of as many facts as possible about their new pets; not hide what they are to prevent you from purchasing them cheaper elsewhere. (or whatever reason they have for not telling you exactly what kind of shrimp they are).

I wish potential owners the best of luck with their fascinating new aquatic denizens, regardless of how you choose to get your hands on them and welcome them into your home, and I sincerely hope you give these thoughts some consideration.

Cheers, and happy shrimping!

The EcoSphere got here today. It was very well packed, little chance of it breaking in transit. I noticed that the shrimp were not moving when I got it, but after about an hour they were swimming around energetically. I realized the water was just cold from shipping, after warming up they were fine and happy. =) All in all, it's really cool and a good conversation piece. I'm pleased with the purchase.

This item arrived within 3 days without special shipping, and over the weekend. It was packaged securely and the contents appeared to have traveled well.

When we opened the box-WOW-what a surprise. The pictures are amazing and accurate but do not do it justice at all. Quality, quality, quality. I purchased the small pod (oval) and it contained a good layer of white stones, shells, 3 pink and 1 grey shrimp. I recommend reading the booklet, it contains alot of information. It literally takes 2 minutes and gives a complete overview, especially regarding the lighting and cleaning. My family is very excited to have this and have been watching it all day. It requires no care for a ton of enjoyment.

This has been way beyond my expectations for an unusual and unexpected gift for our house. I will provide an update as time goes by but for now, feel extremely satisfied with this purchase.

UPDATED ON 9/15/2012 (4 WEEKS) The shrimp are still alive and moving around. The algae has maintained its same size and no build-up. Again, just read the booklet and there is no maintenance required for such an unusual gift. Everyone that visits our house from youth to adult is amazed and continues to watch it. Something that I noticed is that our pod has more gravel and a variety of shells more so than the pictures show.

I would highly recommend this purchase for anyone-quality product with tons of enjoyment and no maintenance.

UPDATED ON 2/22/2013 (6 MONTHS) All the shrimp are still alive and moving around. The algae has maintained its same size. About a week ago, I noticed a few smaller than pea size spots on the glass. I read the booklet regarding the spots and got the small booklet with the magnet. You just put the open exposed magnet GENTLY at the bottom to find and attach the inner magnet. I say GENTLY because you might not see it before it shoots up to your magnet and might injure a shrimp. I had about 5 spots and gently rubbed them out. It took maybe a minute. Again, just read the booklet for proper care then there is literally no maintenance required.

This is a very interesting thing to have sitting on your desk--mine came with four small shrimp that I found actively swimming around in my unit the second I unpacked it. The idea that these things will live on their own in this sealed containment unit for YEARS is truly fascinating.

The merchant takes a lot of care in shipping this item; since there are live creatures swimming around in this thing, it has to be shipped via one-day shipping, which costs about $20. But trust me when I say that it is totally worth the extra cost.

Looks like the customer support for this is pretty extensive, though I have not had to contact them myself (doesn't look like I'll have to any time soon.)

I'm more than happy to contribute to the small list of reviewers that have all given it the full 5-stars. You will not regret it either if you give it a chance, I think. Especially if you're an Earth Science Major like I am.

We have had our EcoSphere for over a year, and it may be one of the best gifts I've ever purchased. I gave the EcoSphere to my husband because he can be so hard to shop for. I was ecstatic when it came and he absolutely loved it. The sphere itself is minimalist and beautiful. It looks exactly like the photo pictured. The shrimp are active and lively, and still alive and kicking after more than a year. With the right amount of sunlight and at the right temperature, the EcoSphere stays perfectly balanced. I have never had to maintain it at all. The instructions do say that sometimes the sphere will get dirty or be overgrown with algae if it's in too much sunlight, however, it comes with a magnet on the outside, and one on the inside of the sphere to clean the interior of the glass. After all this time, we will still pull it out to impress guests. It's definitely a conversation piece. The instructions also had a warranty for the sphere if the shrimp died, where you could send the sphere back for replacement. However, I don't foresee this being an issue. If you think someone you know would like this, or if you're thinking of getting it for yourself, I would highly recommend the purchase. In fact, I wish we would have splurged for a larger sphere.

Co2 Bubble Counter

Co2 Bubble CounterI've been using this on my 20 gallon planted tank for about 4 years and so far it's been great. The only issue I've ever had is when I clean it. Taking it apart and cleaning it is super easy and I do it about once a year. The first 2 times I had a bit of trouble putting it back together. The O-ring on the fitting really makes it a tight fit and it has to go back together just right. I later found out that most people put a tiny amount of Vaseline or even a drop of cooking oil on the O-ring when they clean em out and that makes it much simpler to put back together, and besides, it's good for the O-ring. Kinda wish I knew about that sooner. I thought about giving this 4 stars but because it's lasted for so long (outlasted 3 filters) and is still as good as the day I got it... 5 seems fitting.

Oh, the other reviewer seems to have thought this was a Co2 diffuser. It's not. This is a bubble counter that goes on the outside of the tank.

Big Co2 bubbles coming out from the side of the disc. I tried to fix it by using waterproof glue but it doesnt solve the problem.

I used it for just 2 days and paid around $24. A waste of money. I went back using a glass diffuser for $9 and works better.

Not worth even for just 1 STAR Rating. Dont buy it.

Red Sea Reef Care Algae Control Test Kit - Nitrate & Phosphate - 100 tests

Red Sea Reef Care Algae Control Test Kit - Nitrate & Phosphate - 100 testsThis is a great nitrate kit for reef tanks. The color wheel is nice, and the liquid reagents beat the heck out of some of the powdered reagents that hanna uses. I still use my hanna phosphate checker, but use the reef care to check every once and a while. The kit is easy to use, and I've corroborated results with several other test kit manufacturers. Highly recommended.

Well, it is better than the kit I was using before, but I ended up buying a Hanna colorimeter for phosphate tests as that seems to be more sensitive and is supposedly very accurate.

Lee's 20L/29 Economy Undergravel Filter, 1 Plate, 12-Inch by 30-InchThis product is just OK. The packaging is loose and ugly so the contents come scuffed and chipped, the quality of the plastic is poor so it breaks very easily when installing. The slits in the plate are too small and aren't ideal for letting particles through so they tend to stay in the gravel more than they should.

Mardel Master Water Test Kit Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater), 50ct

Mardel Master Water Test Kit Strips, 50ctI consider myself a serious aquarist with a setup that cost me over $3000 for my overly spoiled Koi and fancy goldfish. I recently moved from Pennsylvania to New York City where the water quality is not nearly as friendly toward goldfish nor consistent coming out of the tap and so I find myself testing the water many times in between scheduled water changes from the tank as well as the faucet.

I can't stress enough how convenient it is to dip one of these strips and be done with all the testing in one shot, but also consider that the liquid tests are not much more economical.

Each strip costs around $0.20, and with 5 tests all done within about a minute.

Even if you are doing the regular liquid 'drop-tests' for Ph, Nitrate, and Nitrite, those tests typically run at best $0.15 ($0.05 per test), and you're looking at a few minutes for each individually. I personally got tired of rinsing the tubes and leaving them somewhere to dry. But, I would also gladly spend a penny per minute to not have to go through all that.

These test strips are really convenient and fast. They also appear to be seriously inaccurate. First of all, for nitrate and nitrate I could never get the strip colors to match any of the colors on the standard. Second, for ammonia it always showed clear, which means fine, but which made me suspicious because the tank I'm testing is just a week old, and there SHOULD be some ammonia. After some advice from other fishkeepers I bought the more expensive (and slower and more tedious) API test kit. Sure enough, that not only clearly shows nitrate and nitrite (in expected quantities), but also shows a LOT of ammonia. The API test kit is more expensive initially, and definitely not as convenient to use as the strips, but I'll trade a little convenience for accuracy any day.

I really enjoy using this kit as it gives accurate, I believe, test results in a relative short period of time. But it has an "extra" step when discovering the ammonia levels of aquarium water. One has to fill a tiny tube (provided) with aquarium water and then vigorously dip the test strip in that water for thirty seconds. The results are then available. Other test kits I have used omit this "extra" step and thus are a tad easier to use. I still well recommnded this kit.

SpongeBob SquarePants® Bikini Bottom® Aquarium Ornaments

Penn Plax Spongebob's Pineapple Home OrnamentI bought this item to place in my 20g tank.

The quality of the manufacturing isn't ideal, and the product can certainly harm your fish. The harm would come from the areas around where the door and window openings are formed into the body, as well as the rim around the bottom... In all those areas, the material seems to have been cut with a hot knife or some other type of thermal cutting tool, sharp plastic slag and edges on the interior where fish (especially if they have flowing fins like Bettas or goldfish) can harm themselves either by shredding the fins or damaging scales.....

I used fine sandpaper and steelwool to polish the sharp edges, and after a through cleaning placed the house into my tank.

the house looks good in the tank with a sand bottom.... but, there will be some modification you will have to do since this product is obviously mass produced with little attention to final quality.

I was out Christmas shopping for my four bettas when I came across the Spongebob Squarepants pineapple house. I couldn't help myself but buy if for my female crowntail betta fish Syn. Syn loves it. The size of the windows are a perfect size. Syn swims through the holes with ease. She also likes to rest in it. I think it was well worth the $10 I spent on it.

Bought 2 pineapple houses for my two beta fish. They love it! They swim in and out of the windows and doors all the time. Then they will swim half way through a window and park there. I love watching them do this. If you love your fish, get them a pineapple house of their own.

this is probably my favorite part of my aquarium. i have spongebob, his house, squidward, his house, and a plankton right in the middle. both are shaped and sized good to allow fish easy access. my black ghost knife fish can even go through the windows. the one you need to stay away from is the krusty krab. waaaaay too small, and the sizes listed on amazon are completely off.

Want SpongeBob SquarePants® Bikini Bottom® Aquarium Ornaments Discount?

this is the cutest damn thing i have ever seen for an aquarium! i bought it and the squidward house for my ten gallon, with some colorful plants, and it is so flippin adorable. it's about the size of a miniature, well, pineapple, or maybe a large apple/grapefruit. it is perfect, my fish love it, and it is a beautiful yellow orange that totally brings my tank to life. you will love it, best price out there for it too. counting the doorway there are six openings for fish to swim in and out. i have a betta and platies, and they are in bikini bottom heaven.

some guy wrote a negative review either for this or the squidward house....saying his cat got into the tank and drowned because he couldn't get his head out of the doorways....a) WTF is your cat doing in your aquarium, and b) what alternate universe do you live in, the doorway is MAYBE two inches. i've had GPS screens bigger than this. so, don't listen!! it's obviously spam or someone with way too much time on his hands.

Lixit Cat Treat Jar, 16-Ounce

Lixit Cat Treat Jar, 16-OunceWhen I buy cat treats I buy them in bundles. This often leaves me with no place to store all of the excess packages until they need used. This saves me space and it is very space savvy. Each jar holds around 4 bags. I highly recommend this. I am going to buy several more for different kind of treats.

I found this jar at a feed store when i was out of town. It is big enough to fit about 2-3 packages of cat treats (depending on size of bag). Jar has a tight seal so your treats stay fresh. All in all good choice for the price.

Ok, so how bizarre is it that I live in South Fla. and I'm paying top dollar for MOSQUITO LARVAE? Anyway, I have a large Black Ghost that is very shy and loves bloodworms, but will only eat late at night when all the lights are out.

I ended up trying this product because all the local pet stores were out of the frozen bloodworms I usually feed him and I had to come up with something. I'll tell you what, these are much more convenient than frozen worms and the Ghost and all the other fish love them too. I predict I will be buying many more cans of this stuff.

These are great, my fish seem to love them and they all swim to the top of the tank to eat them up. Personally I wish they sank to the bottom but they don't, they float. Which means all of the worms they dont eat get stuck to the side of the tank and are a pain to have to clean up. Over all though these are great.

Hagen Marina Ecoscaper Silk Plant Variety Pack, LargeAt first I loved these silk plants, but after only two months, they began to PEEL. As they were in the water, the color began to PEEL off of the leaves, leaving white fabric behind.

I have had to cut off the bad leaves and tie real plants to the stems just to get height for the tank I have them in.

They look very natural in my aquarium. It certainly was a great value for the product. I am planning to buy more.

Wizard Castle - Large

Wizard Castle - LargeI ordered this castle to put in my 50 gallon tank that at the time held a Spotted Pleco, Pepper Cory and a few Glo Fish. When I received the castle it looked great, there were some sharp edges on the outside that I just sanded down until I was happy with them, washed the deco and put it in the tank. Within hours of putting the castle in my tank I noticed a lot of little pieces of plaster floating around, I just scooped those out and didn't think much of it. But then a few days later I started seeing large pieces of both the inside and outside of the castle floating around. I also started to realize just how cloudy my water had gotten since putting it in.

After having this castle for about 4-5 days I decided I wanted to return it because the waterfall was beginning to break off, so I contacted their Customer Service. The representative then proceeded to ignore my request for a return and tell me about how that sort of thing (their product falling apart) can happen and they use products that should be fine for fish to digest and I shouldn't worry about my fish getting cut up on the sharp edges. She also asked me to send along some pictures of what was happening. So I did.

About 3 or so days later she responded saying that she didn't see a problem. I then messaged her back saying that I don't appreciate how casual she was being about this product that I paid $50 for breaking to pieces and that I wanted a refund. She then proceeded to tell me that if I had wanted a refund I should have done it within 7 days of purchase, which I COULD have had it returned in if not for her giving me the run around.

Now I have a $50 piece of crap sitting on the table next to my fish tank.

So, in short; horrible product, and bad customer service. I'll never be buying from here again.

It was a bit smaller than I expected. I couldn't even fit inside the front door and I'm actually a wizard.

Aussie Aquariums - Wall Mounted Plasma Fish Tank - Mini

Aussie Aquariums - Wall Mounted Plasma Fish Tank - MiniI purchased this item as a bathroom decoration. Having had MANY aquariums I knew it was not the ideal tank. Definitely not a beginner or goldfish tank.

The quality of the aquarium is superb. It comes with a net, pump filter, great flourecent lighting canopy,Cleaning Siphon, lid, and reach pile for adding plants & decorations. My hand fits easily into the tank, so cleaning won't be a real issue. I'll remove the fish & decorations, stir the rocks at the botton & siphon out 20% of the water and debris.Replace with fresh decholrinated water, add decorations & then fish once everything has settled down. A papertowel will wipe the glass clean, or a razor blade can remove the algae (if necessary) since the tank is real glass. Just be careful not to kick the adhesive & spring a leak!

The ideal fishes for this type of aquarium would be guppies. A betta, mollies or swordtails. Perhaps a Zebra Danio or Tetra if you add a tiny heater.Place away from areas that will get direct light from the sun or heat from the heater/air from the AC. Fish don't like temp fluxuations!

Enjoy your tank. I was VERY suprised by the superb quality. I think my male betta will be more than happy in his planted tank in my spa bathroom.

This and any other aquariums with the same design fail to tell customers that for a fish to be healthy, the tank it's in has to have a wide surface area. What's wide about a 3 inch by 20 inch surface area?

The fish also have no room to turn around. Most fish will grow larger than the few inches this tank allows.

You can't fit a siphon in it, which means you can't remove the poop from the tank, which means the built-up ammonia will kill your fish in a short amount of time.

AquaCustom 50 Gallon Shadow Box Aquarium

AquaCustom 50 Gallon Shadow Box AquariumThis is the same setup as the more expensive one offered see my complete review there. Delivered fom Apliance connection where I purchased it less than a week I was amazed. Save the money order here. Only difference I know of is its not coming from the manufacturer andbto be honest I have aquariums I have purchased from midwest-tropical and it took three times as long to receive. Buy a instock item from a out side company u will get it faster.

Ok so I purchased one of these tanks about about a month ago. The unit is completely constructed from acrylic. The tank is built in to the unit and can not be removed.

PROS extremely light I'd say hole unit is around sixty to seventy pounds.

Well constructed I have no fears of leakage

I had some reservations about ordering a tank so large and having it arive unscathed the unit came incased in a wooden shell and then spray foam was used to protect the tank. The unit could have fallen of the truck and Ben dragged down the street and would have made it out okay.

All descriptions I read on this tank and none really mentioned the components. I comes with a large multi stage filter with removable media trays. A nice air pump with a flow adjustment. A heater but to be honest I'd use the supplied heater for a twenty gallon tank not a fifty.under gravel filter with lift tube. The tank is plumbed with the drain/ pump intake in the center and the water out on the right corner. I will have to say I like the way they installed a tube on inside that brings water from the return side of the pump to the top and has a angled neck so as to eliminate the need for any hoses being run out side of the tank.

Plenty of plastic plants and more than enough of that small river stone substrate.

Not a bad lighting system dual bulb t5 I think not enouf for plants but okay for this setup. Very soft lines and bends no sharp edges light is mounted to top panel and when shut nothing is exposed.

Cons I am around five ten and standing on a step ladder I can not reach through the access panel in the top and reach the bottom very close but not quite. If substrate is added I might. I would like the tank to be removable. The filter is very tall and is difficult to install I purchased a 45 degree elbow because the hose kept bending and restricted water flow. Hoses are black I'd prefer clear so u can see how dirty they are. Under gravel filters with lift tubes are in my opinion useless. U have a pump sucking the water down from the bottom. Buy a decorative air stone and use that.

No cleaning tools i have purchased aquariums from this company before and always come with cleaning tools and net. The access panel on top could be larger.

This thing looks great and is constructed well bit expensive considering u shoud still buy a heater and any extra decor and fish your talking a couple hundred more.

Como 4 x Aquarium Tank Air Pump Plastic Non Return Check Valves Red Clear

Como 4 x Aquarium Tank Air Pump Plastic Non Return Check Valves Red ClearAnyone whose had a DIY CO2 system backflush all over their floor will understand the importance of installing a checkvalve into a DIY CO2 plastic airline.

There are many companies that manufacture these devices, so its best to see if you can find some user reviews online before you purchase one.

So far, these checkvalves are doing their job.

I will update this review in the future based on my longterm experiences with these devices.

Loving Pets Vegitopia Banana Slices Dog Treats, 5-Ounces

Loving Pets Vegitopia Banana Slices Dog Treats, 5-OuncesI purchased these for my dog...first of all, they're a disgusting black/brown color. Definitely not appetizing. They smell HORRIBLE. I could barely get one out before I had to throw the bag away from me because I thought I was going to be sick. My dog refuses to go anywhere near these things. Do not buy! Make your own!

I ordered these because my dogs like crunchy banana chips. The picture makes these look crunchy and light yellow. What I received was dark brown, squishy banana chips. The expiration was fine. I just want everyone to know that they are not the yellow, crunchy ones.

These banana slices are high quality and my dog goes nuts for them. They are convenient and very healthy. I have been buying these for over a year now and plan on using them indefinitely!

My dog loved these. There like "human people" banana chips. I could never find them in the store though. I would always make sure to order them for her every Christmas.

Our 3 year old toy poodle loves fruit. She loves these! Nice back up to having to buy fresh fruit that sometimes get eaten in time. Plus it gives her a variety instead of just blueberries for a week. The smell when opening the bag is overwhelming but other than that great product.

SunSun HW-304B 5-Stage External Canister Filter w/ 9W UV Sterilizer, 525 gph

SunSun HW-304B 5-Stage External Canister Filter w/ 9W UV Sterilizer, 525 gphMay 20th 2013

Very simple set-up. I have been up and running with this canister now for 6 weeks. Priming was simple, good water flow, no drips or salt creep of any kind.. VERY QUIET as well. So far I am very pleased with the performance. I have yet to turn on the UV sterilizer since this is on a new Salt set-up. I will update in another month after I remove for first cleaning.. I will be adding more Bio-media.

So I bought one of these filters for my 75 It works great. As for those that say its an older model of the aquatop that's not really true if you do you research on these filters sun sun is one of the largest aquarium companies in China they are the mother company not a cheap knock off I run all three models the 302 the 303B and the 304B the UV sterilization works great I'm testing these filters against fluvals. And yes they do work better. Stop paying for a name and just buy what works.

So I had big plans for these filters. Originally I had bought two to put directly into the bottom of a 220 gallon plywood tank but those plans fell through. The tank ended up leaking and I don't have time to fix it before I leave the country for 2 months. So I set both of these bad boys up on my 40 gallon tank with two messy turtles in it. I have a cascade 1000 on that tank that has done a decent job for its work load but it couldn't never keep the water crystal clear. It doesn't have enough current to push debris up from the tank floor towards the power head on the other side. Once I added the SunSun's, there was so much pressure moving the water it completely rearranged the substrate in the tank even pushing golf ball sized rocks out of the way. Pretty spectacular amount of water these things can push. Now any particles are quickly pushed around the tank in the water column instead of resting on the substrate and pushed into 1 of the 3 filter heads I have. I spent a few minutes just watching tiny particles speed from one end of the tank to the other straight into the intake hoses like they were magnetic! My water looks clearer than I'd ever seen it! and hopefully the UV lights keep it from never turning green. I'm hoping to be able to cut back on constant weekly water changes and possibly keep it at around every 2 weeks with these.

I put a lot of carbon pads, extra cut to size filter pads as well as 500mL of purigen in each filter on the top tray to polish the water as well. I've heard great things about purigen from fishkeepers everywhere so that might be a good reason my water is so clean as well.

Set up was a snap, all the parts came in a white box. more parts than you'll probably need actually. I didn't use the surface skimmers but its a good feature.

BTW I bought both of mine on ebay instead of amazon. Found them for 80 bucks each. total investment of 160 with free shipping from California to new england. what a steal!

the seller was perfect to deal with, the product description was on point, and the filter arrived a day ahead of time. the filter has been running for around three months now, its operation is very quiet, and there have been no mechanical issues. if i ever decide to start up anlther tank i'll definatley be using a sunsun.
