Up Aqua Ceramic Bamboo Shelter, Large

Up Aqua Ceramic Bamboo Shelter, LargeI thought this would be a great addition to my pond and provide my small koi a place to hide. This is a small shelter.

I don't know what it is about it, but my fish won't swim into this. They swim around it but it sits unused. They prefer an old can and drainage pipe. I wouldn't recommend this product.

My CPO Crayfish love these... I'll find them climbing all over them and hiding in the tubes. One thing to note however, the tubes are glued in the form you see them, no way to change how they are formed.

Teddy Tank Penguin Betta Fish Tank 8-Piece Premium Package

Teddy Tank Penguin Betta Fish Tank 8-Piece Premium PackageI would not put my betta fish in this! Betta fish need at least 2.5 gallons and need a sturdy tank on a sturdy surface. Not a stuffed animal that will be shaken and stress the fish to death.

I have the monkey tank in my room, and I absolutely love it! It gives my desk some character, and my betta has been happily living in it since January. :)

Hagen Elite Air Pump for Aquarium - 110 V

Hagen Elite Air Pump for Aquarium - 110 VMy 801 Elite air pump is NOT quiet. It is the same style as this 803, but the 801 appears to be unavailable now--I bought mine on Amazon. It is at least as loud as my fridge, which makes it marginally quieter than my Whisper 20, but still way too loud to live in the same house with. I have an ancient Tetra pump that is quiet, but I haven't been able to find any modern pumps nearly so tolerable. I've ordered one of Hagen's new style pumps through Amazon to see if maybe they're reasonably quiet. I'll review that pump after it comes.

This is a great no-frills pump. Works great powering an air wall in a 60 gal aquarium. Not real quiet, I wrap it in a towel on carpeting and that quiets it down big time. It is very powerful, especially for its stated power of up to 20 gallon tanks, and is a great buy at such an inexpensive price compared to other pumps.

Has plenty of power for a air stone in a 55 gallon tank.

Jardin Coral Design Silicone Ornament Aquarium Décor, Purple

Jardin Coral Design Silicone Ornament Aquarium Décor, PurpleIt's about the size of a half dollar coin. And it looks like rubber. It was only $3.99 so I decided to just 'throw' it somewhere in the tank. Amazon was great!! They saw my disappointment and offered me a refund. Of course, I took them up on it. Truly a piece of junk!!

I ordered this for a betta fish tank, but now use it in a different tank with schooling fish. It stays put where you put it in the tank and doesn't drift around. Easy to move, never gets stuck in anything. Soft, and natural looking. It doesn't hurt my fish. The color entertains my fish also. Happy with this order, and I'll look for more from this seller in the future.

I didn't check the pic too closely when I purchased. It is very small and doesn't move around too much in our tank. The Pink one is the largest and our little gold fish hang out on it. Really! We also have the Orange one but the fish in that tank are large and don't really bother with it. Cleans up well. Kids love them.

Mardel Master Water Test Kit Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater), 50ct

Mardel Master Water Test Kit Strips, 50ctI consider myself a serious aquarist with a setup that cost me over $3000 for my overly spoiled Koi and fancy goldfish. I recently moved from Pennsylvania to New York City where the water quality is not nearly as friendly toward goldfish nor consistent coming out of the tap and so I find myself testing the water many times in between scheduled water changes from the tank as well as the faucet.

I can't stress enough how convenient it is to dip one of these strips and be done with all the testing in one shot, but also consider that the liquid tests are not much more economical.

Each strip costs around $0.20, and with 5 tests all done within about a minute.

Even if you are doing the regular liquid 'drop-tests' for Ph, Nitrate, and Nitrite, those tests typically run at best $0.15 ($0.05 per test), and you're looking at a few minutes for each individually. I personally got tired of rinsing the tubes and leaving them somewhere to dry. But, I would also gladly spend a penny per minute to not have to go through all that.

These test strips are really convenient and fast. They also appear to be seriously inaccurate. First of all, for nitrate and nitrate I could never get the strip colors to match any of the colors on the standard. Second, for ammonia it always showed clear, which means fine, but which made me suspicious because the tank I'm testing is just a week old, and there SHOULD be some ammonia. After some advice from other fishkeepers I bought the more expensive (and slower and more tedious) API test kit. Sure enough, that not only clearly shows nitrate and nitrite (in expected quantities), but also shows a LOT of ammonia. The API test kit is more expensive initially, and definitely not as convenient to use as the strips, but I'll trade a little convenience for accuracy any day.

Buy Mardel Master Water Test Kit Strips (Freshwater/Saltwater), 50ct Now

I really enjoy using this kit as it gives accurate, I believe, test results in a relative short period of time. But it has an "extra" step when discovering the ammonia levels of aquarium water. One has to fill a tiny tube (provided) with aquarium water and then vigorously dip the test strip in that water for thirty seconds. The results are then available. Other test kits I have used omit this "extra" step and thus are a tad easier to use. I still well recommnded this kit.

Hagen Nutrafin Max Guppy Vegetable Flakes, 1.06-Ounce

Hagen Nutrafin Max Guppy Vegetable Flakes, 1.06-OunceGuppies are just dumb fish, right? Just feed them whatever. Not true. My guppies show great excitement when I reach for this food. Not only is it good for guppies, but my neon tetras and mollies love it too.

This is the only food my fish will eat and I can not buy it at my local store anymore, thanks.

This is a smallish can of fish food, but for the price its perfectly okay. The flakes are small, so if you have large fish this may not work for you. I have guppies and cardinal tetras and pygmy rasboras all small fish and they gobble this up eagerly. I like that I can grind it up with my fingers for the little fry to be able to eat.

This is a good purchase if you want to vary what you feed your small fish.

Zilla 11893 24/7 Digital Timer Power Center, 1875-Watt

Zilla 11893 24/7 Digital Timer Power Center, 1875-WattI am using this on my reef tank for my lighting. As mentioned previously there are 2 day receptacles and 2 night receptacles. The timer alternates between the two ( one on ,one off). There are also 4 continuous power receptacles.I did not find the timer hard to program. There is a small replaceable battery in the back of the unit used for keeping the timer accurate if power is lost.

My only complain as with most power strips is that they allow only enough space between the receptacles for a common

plug and not a/c converters.

As to the one review about the timer not working. I had mine fail after about 3 weeks. However I simply called the

customer service number given on the instructions. They acknowledged that occasionally a unit has these problems and they sent me a whole new unit free of charge. No complaints here. The warranty is 12 months.

This timer sounds like a great idea, battery backup, controls daylights and nightlights on reef tank, great idea crappy product. This timer's battery backup dosent work, not sure if they sent it with dead watch style battery or what but it dosent work and it is screwing up timer itself. Had to completely remove battery to get timer to function. I have had it just over two weeks and had to reset this timer 5 times. Came back two days last week to a dark reef tank. Wouldnt buy this brand ever again.

this is a wonderful timer it works great. It is pretty time consuming to program, I suggest using the battery in case the power goes out and you have to program it all over again. Instructions are also helpful.

I have used these timers for 6 years in practice and for my own pets.

They are wonderfully easy to set up and allow me to use multiple fixtures for lighting/uva and b/heating and night time viewing as well as water fixtures (fountains, misters, foggers)

This is even good for parrots and birds as it can be used to provide a mister only during the day and heating at night in cold climates or a night time viewing light.

Finnex Fugeray-R Ultra Slim Aquarium LED Light Fixture

Finnex Fugeray-R Ultra Slim Aquarium LED Light FixturePerfect for a 10-gallon or smaller tank. I use it for a five gallon that has moss and dwarf hairgrass, and it does its job well. Love the red accents, too.

Received this light yesterday for my 12 by 12 planted cube. I agree with other reviewer that this light would be sufficient for up to a 10 gallon tank. Build quality is strong. Light output/color is very nice and at around 40 bucks, I'd give it an early strong buy rating. I will update once I actually see some growth results.

Lee's Pet Products ALE16015 Rigid Tubing for Aquarium Pumps, 3/8-Inch by 3-Feet

Lee's Pet Products ALE16015 Rigid Tubing for Aquarium Pumps, 3/8-Inch by 3-FeetI cut off about 1/4 of the piece and used the remainder to make a bottom siphon for my 29 gallon tank. I find the

regular tank siphon to pull out too much water and make it hard to target areas where debris accumulates. I can

get those areas with much greater precision by attaching the original vac hose to this rigid tubing and using that instead.

I bought these for storage of end mills, as they tend to dull themselves if allowed to bang together in a drawer. The tubing works well for this, I just cut it into sections long enough for the cutter, slide it in and cap it. Allows me to easily identify them by size and type, since it is clear. I expect it would also work well for aquariums, but I didn't try them for that.

Marineland C-220 Multi-Stage 55 Gal Canister Filter

Marineland C-220 Multi-Stage 55 Gal Canister FilterI know its a bit premature to write a complete review, but I'd like to set the record straight with regards to set up, and address the concerns of the one-star reviewer (David).

I found the filter a breeze to set up. My only concern is the instructions, but I'll address that below.

A few notes about my situation:

-relatively new to aquarium keeping set up first pond (small 75 gallons) this spring.

-purchased new 33 gallon aquarium to house pond fish for winter

-2x3" goldfish, 1 dojo loach

-had previously constructed a home-made filter for the pond, which was the bees knees!

When I purchased the aquarium, I bought a 30 gallon Aqua-Clear (Hang-on type) filter to go with it. I didn't even open the box before deciding it might not be the best filter for my set-up. So, I took it back.

After a bit of research, I decided on another hang-on power filter the Marineland Penguin BIO-Wheel 200. I was thinking that more filtration is better, and thus selected the 200 model.

I actually opened the box on this one, and discovered that my tank would have to be approx. 3.5" away from the wall in order for it to sit level. I didn't want the ugly thing on the front of my tank, nor could I put it on the side as my light bar did not allow enough space. I wasn't comfortable having my tank that far from the wall, so I packed it back up and returned it to the store.

After doing even more research (clearly I hadn't done enough of it by this point), I decided that a canister would meet my needs to a T. Generally speaking, they clean more and clean better, and would allow my tank to fit closer to the wall. With chemical, biological and mechanical filtering a canister seemed the way to go.

So, which one to choose?

We researched many, many, many canisters. We spent hours discussing the pros and cons of each brand, each review, each reviewer's setup (compared to ours), costs, tube size, filter media in short, we dissected each contender until we'd narrowed it down to two. The Marineland C-Series 220 and the Eheim Ecco.

In the end, cost and availability of replacement media were the deciding factors. We went with the Marineland.

I purchased Marineland C-Series 220 from my LFS for $135 CAD, and set it up in a brand-new 33 gallon tank. Although the filter is rated for a 50 gallon, I'd like to over-do it with the filtration.

The instructions were simple enough to follow, although I would recommend doing your online research on the set up of this unit, just to familiarize yourself with the process (esp. if you are brand-new, like me). I was initially a little leary with the Marineland, as I had read somewhere that contrary to its box-label, it didn't actually self-fill. But, I bought it anyways. See below for additional info on this!

This canister comes with everything you need to get going all the tubes, fittings and filter media. Please ensure that your LFS sells the replacement media you need, BEFORE you buy the canister. As Dave pointed out, what good is an excellent canister, if you can't buy more stuff when its time to replace the media?

The tubes fit snuggly with no leakage, using the compression fittings already attached to the valve block. Familiarize yourself with the way the valve block works this will assure you that it will NOT leak when you have to remove it for maintenance.

The valve block has two tabs used to disengage it from the motor head. The first tab is actually a ball-valve, which lifts and cuts the water to/from the tubes. The second tab rotates, and is the mechanism which locks the valve block to the rest of the canister. The first tab will fold over the second to ensure that it is not accidentally unlocked.

This model has five filtering layers. They are as follows, from bottom to top (the direction the water is forced through): filter foam, carbon bags, BIO-filter balls, ceramic rings, filter floss.

Rinse your media filter, as per the directions. This model has 5 layers of media to keep your tank sparkling clean, and all the trays lift out easily for maintenance. The trays inside simply stack in order.

The one thing I'd like to point out to Marineland, is that their instructions do not indicate which port is the intake, and which is the outlet.

After getting everything situated and hooked up I thought, well... how much difference is it really going to make if I mix them up?

It makes a lot of difference, actually!

I'm not an engineer, but you need to make sure that the intake tube and strainer is on the intake tube, and the outlet tube and diffuser is on the outlet tube. Otherwise, you could press the primer button till your fingers fell off, and your canister won't fill.

It may tease you by partially filling. It may tease you by completely filling. It may tease you by dribbling a bit of water down into the canister body. Don't be fooled. It doesn't work.

The outlet is on the left, and the intake is on the right, when the canister is facing you.

Switching the strainer and diffuser, I depressed the quick-prime button two more times, and VOILA! The machine gurgled to life, started sucking back the water, and chugged happily away!

It's that easy.

I'm serious.

The motor is super quiet I have my aquarium in the living room on a buffet-style side table. The canister is simply sitting underneath, in the cabinet. I'm currently sitting approx. 15 feet away, and I can't hear it.

Below are the intstructions, in case you want to see what I'm talking about.

Looks complicated but don't be fooled. If you've got an iota of brains, you'll be on your way in no time.Stay tuned for an actual performance review.

I have been running the Marineland C-220 for about 16 months on a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium.

In general, this filter has had good flow, and been quiet and good filtration capability. With a monthly cleaning and replacement of media, water has been consistently clear and tested within acceptable parameters. Replacement media is a bit expensive in local stores, but can be had for much less online. Some items, such as foam pads and polishing pads, are easily cleaned for reuse.

However, after one year of use, this filter began developing problems. First, the leaks developed. Leaks where the hoses attach to the valve block assembly, where the block assembly connects to the motor head, in the valve block shut off valve and even the main seal where the motor head clamps onto the canister. All the o-rings and seals appear to be fine and clean, but they will still sporadically develop leaks.

The impeller has also had sporadic problems with chattering and changes in flow, even when the unit is properly primed and all air is evacuated.

Last night, during a routine water change, all the problems converged in a single grand failure. The impeller failed and is now chattering loudly and no longer pumping. The primer seems to have lost its ability to pump. And, the canister is leaking from all four areas mentioned above at the same time.

My question today is do I spend the $50-$60 dollars for a new impeller, o-rings and valve block, or simply start over.

Buy Marineland C-220 Multi-Stage 55 Gal Canister Filter Now

I purchased this filter around 6 years ago (I can't remember exactly when). The main reason was, the filter I had before that was the Magnum H.O.T. back-of-the-tank power filter. That one was good, but with the limited space behind the tank (just try and move the tank with gravel, water, etc), it scratched the wall. The first one died a little over a year later, when the impeller broke. Like others have said, since replacement parts have to be sent, I just bought a new one. That one is still in use today (around 5 years). Over the last 5 years, I found one issue everyone should be prepared for: the hoses at the pump have a tendency to separate from the nozzles. The best way to prevent it is to inspect the hoses. When it starts to pull away from the nozzle, chop about 0.5" off and reinstall. Cleaning is usual dirty work, each filter media has suggested replacement timeframes. A newest issue I am dealing with is the gasket/o-rings.

So, because most stores don't stock replacement parts, you might want to buy (1) replacement impeller and (2) replacement O-Rings/Gaskets. Another idea is to buy replacement filter media. Those may add $30 to your bill, but you're prepared!

So, I HIGHLY recommend it, as long as you buy replacement parts ahead of time. It has kept my tank clean and healthy for the last 6 years!

Read Best Reviews of Marineland C-220 Multi-Stage 55 Gal Canister Filter Here

Pro's:

-Quiet

-Self priming (after the hose is initially filled)

-Good flow rate

-No leaks, no mess when removing hose block

Con's:

-Flimsy (I'm returning it before it breaks)

-Prime pump is very stiff doesn't work well (didn't need to use it though)

-To complicated/to many seals--every basket has a seal that needs to be in place

I've had the fluval 304 and the Eheim Ecco. After fixing the Eheim for the 3rd time I decided to give up on that piece of junk and get something more durable. I looked at the new fluval and didn't like the design so I bought this filter and used it for a week but will be returning it due to the cons discussed above. I looked at the Rena and this seems like the best design (more durable, simpler design, fewer parts) so I'll try that one next. It also has better reviews though I am concerned with the leakage comments.

From what I know I would rank filters in the following order

1. Rena

2. Marineland

3. Fluval

4. Eheim

I love the Aquaclear filter and this sponge does a great job of keeping the water clear. However, there is no reason to replace the sponge unless your original one gets damaged. During your weekly water change, rinse and squeeze the sponge in the water you take from the aquarium. It'll last forever this way and you'll keep the beneficial bacteria in the tank where it's going to keep the ammonia and nitrites under control.

Exotic Environments Hollow Log Aquarium Ornament

Exotic Environments Hollow Log Aquarium OrnamentI needed a decoration of sorts that would big enough to allow my 20" pleco room to swim through. I've tried all sorts logs for aquariums and even terrariums. The description says X-Large and sure enough, not nearly big enough. I had a temporary solution, but needed a final home. I bought this one thinking it could very well be one more miss. I was wrong. Completely big enough for the pleco to swim through, and still be able to peek though the side hole. I can't say enough. Highly recommended.

Great home for my 12" albino pleco! Just moved up to a 55 gallon tank from a 20 gallon in order to give my pleco and a couple of his buddies more room to move around. This is just the ticket. I shopped several local pet supply stores and just couldn't find something big enough with an "airplane hanger" style shape that my fish could glide in and out of easily. Amazon.com to the rescue! This log has some nice, realistic detail and color and I really like the large hole in the side and top of the log, too. I was a little worried that it would look too big in my tank (even knowing the measurements in advance, I was surprised at the size when I opened the package!), but it is a perfect fit in my 23"x26"x25" bowfront cube. Couldn't be happier with my pleco's new house and my red fin shark is grooving on it, too.

Acurel F25 Millimeter Water Clarifier, Aquarium, Treats 250 Gallons

Acurel F25 Millimeter Water Clarifier, Aquarium, Treats 250 GallonsI had set up a 55 gal tank and the water remained cloudy for almost two weeks. I was told just be patient as the water needs to stabilize. I waited. And waited. Finally I thought the water should have cleared so I began using products claiming to clear cloudy water. No luck. Until I used Acurel F. I was blown away. Within an hour the tank was crystal clear. Truly amazing stuff. Use this product. It really works!!! I've been using this, and only this, for almost 8 yrs. now. For that just polished look you won't find anything better.

Provided you use it as directed, to clear silt or dust from the water column...this is a great flocculant for aquariums. It binds small particles together into larger particles that your filter can more easily handle. I always use it after a large water change, since I tend to disrupt things with the addition of the new water.

Buy Acurel F25 Millimeter Water Clarifier, Aquarium, Treats 250 Gallons Now

Not as fast as it said it would, so I added more drops as directed. We lost 6 fish in the process (Two guppies and 4 head and tail light tetras.) I don't know that I can blame it on this product as the tank was getting pretty bad. It is now crystal clear and has remained that way.

For the reason of losing the fish I would not add more. If it doesn't clear up as fast as they say, be patient and give it 24 hours.

UPDATE: Have used this again but only put in 1/4 to 1/2 of recommended dose, a day apart...works like a charm under those circumstances. Still does not work as fast as they, seems to work best overnight, fish are fine.

worked great, although it took about 20 mil. to do the job, which is no problem because it is all natural... thanx. I have a 20 gallon tank and recommend cleaning filter after each recommended dose,,untill crystal clear,, thanx again, I am very pleased.....!!!

Want Acurel F25 Millimeter Water Clarifier, Aquarium, Treats 250 Gallons Discount?

My tank wasn't too bad but still was not satisfied with the clarity and wanted it to be more clear. After adding only 15ml's of this and an hour later the haziness that I was complaining about, cleared up. I only put 15ml's in it which is only half the amount I should have put inside a 275 gallon tank. After adding it in it did make it more cloudy which made me stop adding and just waited, which I guess was enough. Now I am satisfied with how clear the water is, definitely makes a huge difference and the product is cheap.

I was not sure if my grandson's bearded dragons would actually use this when I bought it for him. But sure enough, they are on it constantly. They lay on top of each other on the hammock. I probably should have bought two of them!

This was bigger than I expected, but my little leopard gecko really likes it. It fits perfectly in his 20l vivarium and he hangs out on it for a few hours every day.

My Beardie loves this thing. Prior to its arrival, he was in love with a twisty mopani wood root thing that is now only the favorite route to take to his hammock. I love it, the hammock is easy to scoop him off of for handling, it's an easy-clean fabric, and he hasn't pooped on it yet!

New Life Spectrum All Purpose 2270g

New Life Spectrum All Purpose 2270gA quality product and your fish will like, who writes that this product is flawed no idea as fish or birds feed.

This is a food that will meet all your needs when it comes to feed your fish.

I love this fish food. New Life Spectrum is the top of the line as far as fish food goes, with wholesome ingredients such as peaches, kiwi, zucchini and tomatoes amongst others! The pellets in these are small and almost any size fish will truly enjoy them, not just small ones. I run my own fish rescue, and we feed this as a staple food to all of our fish, including guppies, cichlids, plecos, angelfish, goldfish and many others. It sinks instead of floating which is actually not a bad thing. The person who left the review saying they wouldn't buy it because of that reason obviously has no idea how fish feed. Fish will naturally filter through the gravel at the bottom of the tank to find these delicious little nutrient-packed pellets. I highly recommend this fish food for absolutely every fish!

Its very very small, and it sinks too fast. It gets trapped into the small spaces of the gravel and most of it is wasted. For a pellet this small, it should float so the fish can actually eat it. The ingredients are great and my fish do like NLS; I just won't buy "All Purpose" again.
