Tetra Half Moon Aquarium Kit, 10-Gallon
Pros:
Small foot print so it fit onto a narrow/ tall dresser
Super quiet filter, perfect for the kids bedroom.
I like that it is taller than a normal 10 gallon so the plants can grow taller.
The filter seems to pump plenty of water for the tank. You can really see the water movement and if the fish don't eat quickly, some of the food will get sucked into the filter within just a few minutes. The water has been crystal clear.
Cons:
I don't like that they taped things to the inside of the tank when they shipped it. You don't want to use soap or goo gone inside a tank so that you don't kill the fish and it was a bear to clean off the glue with a paper towel.
Because the tank is narrow and tall, you have less surface area, so it technically will hold less fish than a regular 10 gallon tank
The half moon distorts the fish at certain angles and you have to move around to see the corners
Did not come with net or glass scraper
We are happy with the tank and based on our requirements, it fit our needs. The kids love the tank and we have 6 fish in it so far, 3 midnight tetras, 1 glofish and 2 molly's. We plan to add a cat and possibly a siamese fighter, but the number of fish will definitely be maxed at that point.I just set up this tank today and immediately noticed the poor quality filter that came with this aquarium. I don't like the idea of an open top on the filter plus there are so many better filters on the market that will fit this tank. I am also not crazy about the provided top. It's just a piece of plastic that sits loosely on top of the tank with a hole in the front for feeding and two holes in the back for the heater and filter. They should have made this a hinged lid instead as there is a chance fish will jump out. Poor design! However, the tank looks beautiful and with a few minor adjustments, it will be a nice addition to my office. If you do decide to add a better filter, use the AquaClear 20. It's fantastic and will keep the aquarium in much better shape than the provided filter. Fits perfectly. Just remove the cut out portion of the back of the lid and the AquaClear fits beautifully. The AquaClear has a lid so the water is not exposed and requires very little maintenance.

We bought this tank today and after setting it up, we absolutely love it. I wanted an elegant/stylish tank, and that is exactly what I got.Things that I love about the tank:
1. Shape the half moon shape is great for viewing your fish, plus, it is a nice change from traditional rectangular fish tanks
2. The filter is very quiet
3. The filter replacements are not very expensive (I looked them up after purchasing the tank)
4. The LED light is bright and does not require much energy
5. The heater can be placed almost anywhere in the tank, allowing you to hide it behind plants or water features.
Things to note:
1. While I love the light, the tank that is the next size up comes with a day/night LED light feature which allows you to use one light for both day and night, instead of purchasing a separate night-time light if you want to view your tank during off hours without stressing your fish out.
2. The filter does not have a lid, so it is a little unfinished looking if you are standing directly over the tank
3. I wish the instructions would have been a little more visual and less technical. We wanted to get the tank set up quickly, and had to stop for each item and read the long instruction sheets.
While we've only had the tank and set up for one day, we absolutely love it. It is a stunning feature in our home.

For a total of about six weeks, this was an attractive and enjoyable aquarium.I bought this kit looking for a decorative aquarium to hold about five fresh water fancy goldfish. The tall tank with its clear lid has a lot of eye appeal: the fish and contents are much more visible than in more conventional tanks with a dark rim or a hood obstructing the upper portion. For a ten gallon tank, it has a lot of viewing area.
While the filter is nothing fancy, it does the job well provided that the tank is kept properly filled and the filter's waterfall edge is positioned not too far above the waterline. Positioned like this the system is admirably quiet, but if either the fill level is off or the filter is improperly positioned, you will experience splashing and quicker evaporation losses. It is not a bubbler-type system, so if you need to have a lot of air injected into the water you'll want a different pump/filter.
I was happy with my aquarium for aboout five days when I noticed it was leaking at the bottom left corner. I returned it and received an immediate replacement. This worked fine until, about five weeks later, I awoke to a significantly lower water level in the tank, and a correspondingly upsetting puddle on my stand and floor. I was willing to accept the first failure as a fluke, but after the second tank's failure I gave up on this item and bought another manufacturer's product.
After dissassembling the failed tank I noticed that the silicone sealant between the front curved glass, the flat glass backplate, and the plastic base appeared to have been sloppily applied in several places, including at least one place where the leaks occurred. There were a couple of other spots where upon close inspection I could see voids or finger grooves. Maybe my two tanks were made on the same day by the same inexperienced or careless assembler, and/or checked by the same indifferent inspector. Whatever the cause, poor quality control is what soured me on this product. If you really like this tank's looks in spite of its problems, I recommend you consider applying extra sealant to the seams along the inside of the base and hopefully avoid the issues I experienced.Something with the curve of the glass and sudden light changes drives fish to jump out! I've had this tank for a year and a half and have lost close to 20 fish. I had 1 type in there and after 5-6 jumped, I decided to move it and stock it with different fish. Same results, very upsetting to find your favorite fish dried up behind the tank/stand. Platies, Guppies, Cories, ...doesn't seem to matter, they all jump. Stay away from this tank or completely cover with saran wrap or plexiglass cut to perfect size. This will keep your fish alive, but I don't think they will be very happy.

Buy Zilla 09930 Night Black Heat Incandescent Spot Bulb, 100-Watt Now
I have bought numerous prodects for Zilla the past year, however, these keep going out on me within 2-5 weeks of purchase. These products are very expensive and it seems Zilla is making these very cheaply now. This is happening with both the bulbs I buy from Amazon and local stores. They are nice because they are not bright like other night/black bulbs, but it doesn't seem to be worth the hassle anymore. And I have read that this is happening to other people more this year too, so it doesn't seem to be anything I'm doing or using and I didn't have a problem in the past with them.Read Best Reviews of Zilla 09930 Night Black Heat Incandescent Spot Bulb, 100-Watt Here

These are a bit smaller than I expected them to be, but they are still a great deal. I'd say they are about 3/4" in diameter. They came in a black mesh bag which I am using to contain them in my filter. I just put them in today. I'll update my review again after they have been in there for about a month to let you know what I think of them them. But so far, so good. And the price was a great deal! I am big on biological filtration and these are new to me, unlike anything I've used previously. It takes time for this kind of product to show its best features, so I'll be back later to fill you in on how well this product works. These bio balls have some weight to them. I did not use the net zippered bag as I divided the balls up in my filtration system.

Cat Mate Wall Liner
With one or more installed, it's virtually impossible to reach the control knob of the Electronic Cat Mate Door. They need to create a the liner the same size as the whole Cat Mate Door (not just the opening flap); or one with a way to control the knob after installation. Furthermore, instead of instructing the user to cut it down to size with a saw and use glue, there should be several small sections so each can connect together to form whatever length liner is required.
All-in-all, this is just a poorly designed, over-priced product. I love my Cat Mate Door and have owned two over the years, but this thing is crummy by comparison. If you have the capability to install the pet door in an outside wall, you surely have the talent to put together something a whole lot better than what this product provides.
***UPDATE***
After doing a whole lot of cutting, filing and gluing, I managed to make this liner work (sort of). It falls far short of what I had expected, but I did manage to get it to work. However I still stand by my 1-star rating due to the poor design and price. IMO, $10 per liner is a ridiculous price for a small piece of rectangular plastic, especially when you'll need to buy two of them to fit through a typical outside wall, then need to cut them down to size for a proper fit for the product this was supposed to be designed for.Very poor . I have installed the cat mate lockable door through my outside wall. The wall liner doesnt match up with the two components. The inside frame is too big for the liner. Don,t waste your moneyBesides the fact that we have to prop it open for the cat (she refuses to go through it open unless she's IN the laundry room and needs to get OUT), this has worked perfectly. We put this in the wall between our family room and laundry room in order for her to access the litter box. Most cats would be able to open the door, but I have a calico who only does what SHE wants, and that is NOT going through a cat door.
NOTE: I do recommend that you measure the depth of your wall to make sure you don't need this extra piece that fits between the two walls. Our wall is is thinner than most, and we needed a 1/4 inch extra, even with this piece to fit between the two (we filled it in with white duct tape, but I do not recommend this option. I am too cheap to order another extra piece).
Pros: looks so much nicer and easier to clean than white duct tape
Cons: extra money for 1/4 inch

Smaller than I thought, but great service and no issues.Takes 3 to go through a wall. Read the dimensions first.I have 6" walls and had to order another one to make it fit right. Once that arrived, it installed fairly easy and works great!

Fluval Suction Cups, (4) 4x12 mm and clips, (8) 4x14 mm (03, 04 and 05 Series)
They've been in a fresh water tank now for several years (holding a Fluval E electronic heater on a side wall) and they seem as good as the day they first went in!
They're not "deteriorating"........when I need to slide the heater along the glass it "breaks loose" easily and slides while the cups retain their suction, etc.
I'll be happy when I have an extra set, sometimes it's the "little things" that are really important.
I really wouldn't want any other brand, etc., this Company REALLY knows aquarium equipment. They work well, do not seem like they are going to get hard and stop working like so many others.

this suction cups are horrible they don't hold much and when they hold they fall easely, won't recommended for any one.The Fluval Suction Cups are good for some things, but not quite what I was looking for. I am sure I will be able to use them in a different application. What I was actually looking for were suction cups capable of carrying American Flags on the trunk of my Corvette.
Thank you

I actually use these to hold air lines in place. I have bought the regular air line clips and suction cups and they are stop working a few weeks due to cheap plastic. These are supposed to be for canister filter intake/blows or heaters (they work excellent on those too) but I bought an extra set just for air lines. This way my larger cichlids can't knock the air lines around anymore!Friday, December 20, 2013

Penn Plax Baby Hide-Out Breading Grass for Aquarium
I have mine floating. Not only do my fish babies find their way into them for protection but it gives cover to the rest of the fish in the tank. When they float and babies are in them, it is easier to catch the babies and/or feed them. I have a tank just for babies so I love how easy it is to put my net under the floating grass and lift the grass to get the babies quickly. It works ok, except apparently I have a very good hunter in my betta......he has managed to eat all of my babies anyway, it would probably work much better if I took him out of the tank.

Coralife 05692 Pure-Flo II 50-Gallon Per Day 4 Stage RO/DI System
RO filter is awesome.
Amazon is awesome.
This unit does not have a pump but works as advertised (get a gallon of 100% pure as in measured TDS of 0 water in about 30 minutes).I have been using this product for 3 weeks. So far, I've made about 100 gallons of RO/DI water for my marine aquarium, and my only regret is not purchasing an DR/DI filter years ago. I just hook it up to my kitchen sink faucet. There was no need for crazy plumbing projects. I am a little bit concerned about the longevity of the filtering system. The initial batch came out at about 8 parts-per-million total-dissolved solids (ppm TDS), but I'm already up to 15 ppm. However, this is still a pretty low TDS, and I might even be contaminating it just by measuring or something, so I'm not too concerned yet. I do have a couple tips that might make your choice-of-purchase or set-up easier.
1) Unless you plan on installing some kind holding tank and auto-shut off, this filter takes time. Remember, 50 gallons per day is only about 2 gallons per hour. If you don't think you have the patience for that, consider upgrading to a higher GPD.
2) I read some reviews of RO filters that costumers were unhappy because the filtered water was acidic and/or made metal parts rust very quickly. This is not a flaw in the filter this means it's working. RO/DI water has much less dissolved materials than most tap water. Without getting into the chemistry, this means that (1) when the water come to equilibration with the carbon dioxide in the air, it will be acidic, and (2) it will tend to oxidize (rust) metals that it comes in contact with.I use my filtered water to make home-made soda and ice cubes, but I think drinking the RO water straight is pretty gross it just tastes awful to me. I've also heard it can be unhealthy, but I don't have much info on that.
3) This filter works under rather high pressure, so there is a good chance that connections will leak. When you are assembling it, I recommend getting some teflon thread tape from the plumbing section of your hardware store. Wrap the tape tightly 2-3 times around the threads before fitting the connections to tighten everything up an prevent leaks.
4) I had trouble installing the RO cartridge. The cartridge housing is not see-through, so I couldn't tell if I was installing it correctly or not. I could not tell if it was assembled correctly until I had it completely assembled to test it. But you should be able to tell if it is working by the amount of water it is producing; when working correctly, you should be producing clean water at only a trickle (~50 GPD). If you set up the filter and are getting a high flow from the product [blue] tube, you can probably assume the RO cartridge is not installed correctly. (Also, you can check the TDS if you have a meter.) It took me about four tries to get the RO cartridge installed correctly. The thing was, it needed to be pushed very hard into the fitting. The resistance was so high that I was afraid to break it.
5) Many of the fitting on the unit come pre-assembled. A couple of connections on my unit initially leaked just a bit. You may need to unscrew them, wrap some teflon tape around the threads and reinstall. After I took the time to do that, my unit was 100% leak-free.
6) The unit comes with an adapter that should allow you to use it with a standard sink, but installing the adapter takes a few minutes or more, and is kind of a hassle. Also, the adapter is a pretty cheap plastic, so it's prone to leaking and liable to get chewed up if you're not careful installing it every time. I alleviated this issue my permanently replacing the head of my sink faucet with one that I can directly screw the filter on to; this only cost about $3. I did not have to replace the whole faucet, but the very end has outside threads like a garden-hose connection. This has made connecting and disconnecting the filter much more convenient.
Also, be aware that if you have a decorative sink faucet, the adapter might not work. You might have to be creative in installation. I live in an apartment, so I can't do any really involved plumbing projects; however, if I were in a house, I think it would be worth the effort to set the filter up with a holding tank and float valve, so that I there is always an available supply of filtered water.
7) I also purchased TDS meter (HM Digital TDS-EZ Water Quality TDS Tester), and was glad that I did. It is very convenient to be able to test and see how your unit is working. My tap water comes out around 500 ppm. My filtered water has been coming out between 5 and 15 ppm. Since I can check the TDS any time I want, it will be much easier to figure out when my filter needs to be back-washed or replaced.

Purchased this item a few months after I had gotten my tank. In just the month since I purchased this machine the fish, corals and invertebrates in my tank seem healthier and happier. The unit itself puts out ample clean water and in around an hour I have the 5-7 gallons I need to do my weekly water change for my 60 gallon tank.Setup was a breeze and the unit is small enough to allow me to store it under my stationary tub when it's not in use.

I received my RO/RI system yesterday. In assembling it for use, I noticed the DI cartridge was broken into pieces probably from shipping. I called the numbers on the "Imporant Please do not return this product to place of purchase". The 800 number is a scam number trying to sell a $100 rebate for $1.99. The other is disconnected. This is very disappointing. I guess I will be sending this back to Amazon and looking for another manufacturer for an RO system.

Well I've been running this unit for about 6 months now. I've probably made about 700 gallons of water. I have to say, it's a bit concerning of how long it takes to reach sub 10ppm now. I would love to have 0ppm but this unit hasn't done that since the first week of operation. I'm doing good if I can get it down to 6 after about an hour of operation. This unit is okay for the cost, just don't expect it to be awesome.

Elite Submersible Preset Heater
This heater was easy to install. The suction cups do move about easy on the aquarium glass, which makes positioning the heater easy. The heater must be installed below the rim of the tank, so even though it has a min water level, it cannot be set to have the adjustment knob above the water line in a filled to the top aquarium. This is really no big deal as it is fully submersible. The min water level is there for those that keep different aquarium setups in order to keep the heater in the proper water depth.
The knob for adjusting the temperature setting is stiff to turn. This is a big plus as it will keep fish from bumping the knob and causing temperature settings to change.
I have the heater set at 76°F. My thermometer shows a temperature of 75°F. I would say this is a very accurate aquarium heater. The heater does an excellent job of keeping the temperature constant. Room temperatures fluctuate from 65°F to 70°F depending on when we are home or sleeping. My old heater with a room temperature of 65°F could not bring the temperature above 72°F. The Hagen Elite Submersible Preset 100 Watt heater kept my aquarium at the 75°F mark easy when the room temperature was 65°F.
Overall very happy with the heater. Does an excellent job and is within 1° of the actual 76°F setting on the heater (my thermometer could also be off by +/1°F).
I would recommend this heater to others and will have no hesitation buying another when needed.
Another big plus is it has a lifetime warranty.
Update: 12-11-2011 Still holding temperature at 75°F.
This heater costs almost $10 more at my local fish supply store.

Nice heater, works fine, looks alright. Suction cups tend to loosen up though. Keep it out of a bubble curtain or it heats up too much. Nice lifetime warranty.Update: Nov 2012 it started losing its ability to heat. So I picked it up out of the water to see if it was still working and it cracked and broke from pulling it out and quickly putting it back in.

I bought this heater from my LFS because it looked nice, was the correct wattage, and was the cheapest out of most of them on the rack at $26.95 USD. When I brought it home and set it up in my cycling 55 gallon (bought the 200w version), I saw that the temperature dial was very easy to read, so I thought, "Great!" I was wrong. I set it on 76 degrees F, as I figured my T5 lights would give off a bit of heat, along with the recent heatwave my city has been going through this week. I assumed it would go up to perhaps 80F, which was fine because I don't have any fish in it right now, just plants. It heated up the water quickly (about 2 hours) and stood at a steady 76-78 F range, which is ideal for my tropical fish. When I woke up the next day, I saw that the thermometer read 81 degrees F, and the red light which indicates the heater is on was shining. My dial had not moved and still said that it should be 76, but it wasn't. It was 81 and climbing with the heater light on. I quickly turned off the lighting and turned on the AC, as well as turned down the heater. It still reads about 80, and the light comes on sometimes even at the set temperature of 72F.
All in all, I give this heater 2 stars. It heated my aquarium up quickly, has a sleek black design, but the temperature is just too inaccurate. I suppose I'll have to keep it in my aquarium for now, but as soon as I get a chance, I will be switching it out for something else.It does its job which is heating the aquarium but does not heat to the tempeture it's set on. I set mines to 79 degrees (f) and I use more then one temperure reader and both reads 85.1. To me thata big difference and I had this only for a month, I think thats why a couple of my toddler fish past out of the blue. My tank is an ok size it's only a 29 gallon, maybe for this heater you neen a bigger tank size (idk). So be careful on this heater if your tank is not that big. I suggest to buy this if you have an aquarium bigger then mine, it might work out better for you.
