I have an ibc that I am watching the temperature in. I tied this to some fishing line & drop it down in the tank. I have to pull it out to read the temp, but it works well for me.Read Best Reviews of Marina Stainless Steel Thermometer Here
I had one of these when I was in fifth grade in the early eighties and setting up my first aquarium; it looks exactly the same as back then. A break from the glass tube sort of thermometers. The position of the clip on this thermometer interfered with my aquarium hood so I took the clip up top and bent it around backwards so the thermometer hangs in the background of my aquarium instead of the foreground.I use it to measure room temperature rather than the aquarium. I've used a few over my 26 years of fish keeping.

Fluval Clearmax Phosphate Remover Filters, 3.5 Ounces - 3-Pack
When it was Green-X / Phos-X, the media bags were long and thin. With the new packaging they fit the canister filters much better as they are now shaped square.
The product seems to work well enough for me for my marine tank. I have to condition tap for my water changes.
It is difficult to say whether or not there is a real reduction in nitrate. My param seems to remain steady at the low end with regular water changes, but who knows what it would be if I wasn't using it at all?
I acquired fish with closed operculum gills. I wrote to Hagen to ask about the iron content to see if it would be okay for my fish because of the type of gills they have, to which they responded it contains ferric oxide; not okay to use for fish of that type.
I am having to switch to a brand that will not harm my species of fish.(Regular ChemiPure or PhosBan using ferric oxide hydroxide).
While I used this product, I had no complaints. The price was very good compared to other adsorbents and algae remained under control.I use Fluval Clearmax to condition tap water before water changes. I fill a 5 gallon tank running a small filter using Clearmax with tap water and run it 24 hours minimum. The chlorine off-gasses and the Clearmax reduces the phosphates. It is necessary to change the Clearmax after every fifth refill (25 gallons treated). Then I use the preconditioned water for water changes in my 40 gallon tank. Before adding the Clearmax to this routine I would get dreadful blooms of brown algae. When I first started adding the treated water there was a brief ammonia spike from the algae die-off, but it soon stabilized as my tank was well cycled, with good nitrite and nitrate readings prior to introducing the treated water. I have (gianormous) goldfish, tough as nails, so I cannot speak to it's effect on more delicate species.
I do think using it to treat the water before adding it to the tank, rather than putting it in the live tank filter, may reduce it's impact on the fish, as there is a small amount of black precipitate in the conditioning tank which I do not move to the live tank. I assume the precipitate is primarily iron.

Remove this product during disease treatments. Even various water treatments can cause the ferric oxide to leech out, poisoning your fish. I lost 14 fish after using this during a treatment of parasite medication (only one fish presented with problems prior to treatment). I stopped using it for several weeks. I returned it to filter and noticed the same problems starting to happen again while using a product that is supposed to boost immunity. Something in that product was causing the ferric oxide to leech out as well. Fortunately, I recognized what was happening, removed the Clear Max and did several water changes. I was able to save most of my fish.I recommend using a product that does not contain ferric oxide to control phosphates if you are unsure how it will react with other products you use. This product does provide crystal clear water but fish health is much more important. I was using it for a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium.

I did not buy this from amazon, and it comes in a new box at the LFS called Clearmax. I found this out the hard way, but this stuff is lethal to certain types of fish and I was using a little less than 50% of the recommended amount. Now it does trap phosphates, nitrites and nitrates as it states on the box. Water tests are coming up practically zero for each range but at the cost of many fish. Arowanas are especially sensitive to this stuff. Please be careful when using. I will never use this stuff again. I bought it thinking it would help remove some phosphates from a freshwater tank with an algae bloom issue when all i really needed was a UV clarifier/sterilizer. I had no issues with the fish before using this stuff other than some algae bloom. I do weekly water changes and all the water tests were good.Want Fluval Clearmax Phosphate Remover Filters, 3.5 Ounces - 3-Pack Discount?

Finnex 150-Watt Hang-On Digital Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 30 to 60-Gallon
Ray.I am not an expert on aquariums but I have owned a few heaters over the years. This seems to be one of the best. You can adjust it without taking it out of the tank or getting your hands wet. It also gives a digital reading of the current temp. This is good because my last heater died and I didn't know, I only noticed it because my fish were very lethargic. I can't comment on it's durability I have only had it a week, but I am hopeful and so far very happy.
Buy Finnex 150-Watt Hang-On Digital Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 30 to 60-Gallon Now
The unit is fairly high output for its size and achieves a high temperature. I positioned mine near the output of a UV filter outflow to raise the efficiency and prevent high temperatures. This unit replaced a digital thermometer and submersible heater. I did have to find a location that allowed for hiding the shiny metal heating element...Purchased this heater as I've been able to crack 2 glass ones now in the past year... I've had a titanium in the past, gave that tank set up away quite some time ago and its still going! This one seems to be working well, compared temp setting with a digital laser shooter type thermometer and unit was right on par with that with maybe 1 degree difference at various times. So far so good... I like it.
Well, its now June 2011 and I have been through two of these heaters and do not recommend them at all. Unit looks great as mentioned by others, nice red digital display to read temp from across the room, seemed to work well for a while.. then it stopped heating...fish started complaining it was cold, etc...
I contacted the seller (coral aquatics) and even though I was out of my warranty time period they were nice enough to tell me to send it in.. They turned the repaired heater around to me in a few days which was great and I used it again for maybe 2 months or so same problem. No heat.
I tried them again, but being this far out of purchase I cant blame them for not wanting to look at this thing.. truth is, I really don't care to keep doing battle with this heater and decided on a JBJ True Temp unit as also mentioned in the previous review.. I've tried several glass heaters in the mean-time with not much luck. Most recently, a Ehiem Jager 150w model.... read the reviews, available from the local shop cant get my 50g tank above 72... Ugh... Thermometers are another story for another review, Im now using a digital laser shooter type unit as I wrote above to get more accurate readings.
Bottom line, do as others have written and save yourself from this headache of a heater... There is very little quality with this one. This product looks tiny, but does an amazing job. Love that it has its own controls out side of the tank

Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat
Buy Loving Pets Pure Buffalo 14 to 16-Inch Meaty Femur Bone Dog Treat Now
I have a giant-breed dog who likes to chew and I thought, after reading other reviews, that this large chew would last her a good while. She certainly loved it. Even as big as she is, she had a hard time carrying it around, but it lasted no time. Within less than an hour she's disintegrated an entire head off one end of the femur and was sawing down on the rest of the bone.Which is fine, I guess. Happy as can be.. but I've had much smaller bones last longer. And bought a whole box of hooves and had ONE last well over a week (the smell was even worse than these bones, though).
So, anyway. Yes, it's a hit.. but the duration is obviously going to depend on the size and determination of your dog (mine's a "soft mouth gripper" herding breed, btw.. not some wolf hound that likes to tear things to pieces for kicks and giggles..)
As for basic facts on the product itself (for those not familiar w/ chew bonesI wasn't until recently): They're greasy-feeling to the touch (you always have to wash your hands after touching them/getting them out of the wrapper for the dog); they smell pretty bad (fantastic to the dog, though); they've been smoked or something so there are baked-on flecks that are going to flake off all over your floors like crispy bits.. the dog will eat most of them, but you'll be sweeping/vacuuming behind him/her for quite some time and once the bone is finally broken down to bits, there will be shards (most often) and small round tiny bits that can be stepped on or hazards for small children (just be aware if you have them) and your vacuum that will have to be picked up by hand before vacuuming. Best for an outside treat (unless you have roaming neighborhood dogs that will steal them like I do.. she has to keep them inside and I just have to clean them up.. and a lot of the reasoning behind getting these things is to keep them from chewing inappropriate things IN the house). So they have their pro's (they WORK, they attract the dog's chewing attention very well) and cons (a freaking smelly mess).. I find it worth it but will find a different product (probably go back to hooves).

Cat Mate Wall Liner
With one or more installed, it's virtually impossible to reach the control knob of the Electronic Cat Mate Door. They need to create a the liner the same size as the whole Cat Mate Door (not just the opening flap); or one with a way to control the knob after installation. Furthermore, instead of instructing the user to cut it down to size with a saw and use glue, there should be several small sections so each can connect together to form whatever length liner is required.
All-in-all, this is just a poorly designed, over-priced product. I love my Cat Mate Door and have owned two over the years, but this thing is crummy by comparison. If you have the capability to install the pet door in an outside wall, you surely have the talent to put together something a whole lot better than what this product provides.
***UPDATE***
After doing a whole lot of cutting, filing and gluing, I managed to make this liner work (sort of). It falls far short of what I had expected, but I did manage to get it to work. However I still stand by my 1-star rating due to the poor design and price. IMO, $10 per liner is a ridiculous price for a small piece of rectangular plastic, especially when you'll need to buy two of them to fit through a typical outside wall, then need to cut them down to size for a proper fit for the product this was supposed to be designed for.Very poor . I have installed the cat mate lockable door through my outside wall. The wall liner doesnt match up with the two components. The inside frame is too big for the liner. Don,t waste your moneyBesides the fact that we have to prop it open for the cat (she refuses to go through it open unless she's IN the laundry room and needs to get OUT), this has worked perfectly. We put this in the wall between our family room and laundry room in order for her to access the litter box. Most cats would be able to open the door, but I have a calico who only does what SHE wants, and that is NOT going through a cat door.
NOTE: I do recommend that you measure the depth of your wall to make sure you don't need this extra piece that fits between the two walls. Our wall is is thinner than most, and we needed a 1/4 inch extra, even with this piece to fit between the two (we filled it in with white duct tape, but I do not recommend this option. I am too cheap to order another extra piece).
Pros: looks so much nicer and easier to clean than white duct tape
Cons: extra money for 1/4 inch

I bought this product simply for the fact that my dog needed a supplement with more fiber in her diet due to her bout of pancreatitis. Well, it solved that problem, but also helped with a number of other things...1) she now seems to LOVE her food and can't wait to eat each night, 2) since we've been adding this as a supplement to her diet, her itching allergies have magically disappeared, despite the fact that she is still eating the same food as before, and 3) not that she had issues with this before, but her poop size is substantially smaller (opposite of what you'd think when she's getting MORE fiber). Guess its helping with her absorption of her food?love it so much, i ordered both this one and the joint and bone formula for my mom's dog who is older and has a bit of arthritis.

I would definitely suggest anyone who has a senior dog with joint issues give this stuff a trywe've seen a huge difference in his mobility!Saturday, March 29, 2014
Rena SmartHeater Aquarium Heater, 50W
With the plastic exterior, your pets can never get burnt from this heater. If you have a Rena filter, combined you can connect with this heater and warm up the water through the hollowed center. For $20, this heater is a steal.I recently got the Rena Smartheater after a couple episodes of burnt fish from my old, conventional glass tube heater.
No, they were literally burnt to a crisp, but certain types of fish like to rest on available perches in any given tank. Even if your tank is well planted with many available hiding places and good sized leaves like mine is, chances are your fish at some point will come to "rest" on or in the space between the heater and the glass side of the tank that the heater is adhered to.
Bettas and loaches in particular like to take a rest from the filter current, especially if they can do so near the top of the tank to grab air now and again.
I could see spots where the fish received these burns and I felt bad as soon as I realized that these burns must be coming from their contact with the heater.
And though the most inexpensive way to heat a small 5-20 gallon tank is to use the cheap, standard glass tube stick-on-side heaters, I don't like them for this reason alone.
I researched on the internet and found that the Rena appears to be just about the only hang-on-side aquarium tank heater that does not have an exposed heat source on which fish can burn themselves. It seems to heat by some sort of internal heat convection in which water is drawn up through the slats on the bottom and expelled gently, imperceptibly through the top. The top hole itself glows red when the heater is on and shuts off when the heater is not actively heating to show you that it is working.
It seems to do the job well, keeping my tank's temperature apparently stable. And it is built quite robustly, with better build quality and more solidness than the glass tube heaters that I have previously tried.
Fish burning themselves on an exposed heating element is not as uncommon as you would think. The Rena heaters aren't inexpensive, but they do the job safely, which is reason enough to recommend it.
Buy Rena SmartHeater Aquarium Heater, 50W Now
I really like the innovative concept behind the way this heater integrates with the Rena SmartFilter as an alternate for the filter intake tube. This heater design would seem to present less danger of a hot element coming into contact with one of the tank dwellers and would also seem to be less fragile/susceptible to damage as compared to the typical stand-alone glass tube heaters. I docked the product one star for concerns over long-term reliability of these units simce I've had to replace these more often than other stand-alone glass heater units I've used in the past. However, the fact that I'm still using these despite the occasional need for replacement says something for how much I like this innovative design. If you've got a Rena SmartFilter already, I'd recommend giving these a try to see what you think. Otherwise, I'd have to say that buying a Rena SmartFilter just to be able to make use of this heater might be a poor decision due to other deficiencies inherent in the SmartFilter design... that is, unless they've updated the SmartFilter design since the ones I purchased. If you'd like to know more about my concerns/experiences regarding my Rena SmartFilter products, take a look at my other reviews which include a review of the Rena SmartFilter 30 product (of which I presently own/use two).Read Best Reviews of Rena SmartHeater Aquarium Heater, 50W Here
After killing a tank full of goldfish, I've been really careful about the tropical fish that replaced them. I am almost to the point of paranoid about conditions in the tank. The heater that came with the aquarium didn't seem to be doing a good job, so after researching heaters, I purchased the Rena SmartHeater. It has really taken the worry out of my concern for the temperature. It keeps it at exactly what I set it at. I bought the 50W because it was recommended in one article I read, for 20gal. But another article said you should get 100W for 20gal. So we'll see who's right. But so far, 50W is working fine. This works as a great heater, but doesn't hook up that well as an intake. It seemed to have gotten lose, and on of my fish get sucked up into the filter motor. It could have been user error, but just make sure you really check it out and have goo extra tubbing before using it as a intake with smaller fish.Tuesday, March 4, 2014
Hagen Fluval Aquastop For Fluval 104-404, 105-405 Series, Ribbed Hosing
Buy Hagen Fluval Aquastop For Fluval 104-404, 105-405 Series, Ribbed Hosing Now
I have two Fluval 305's and and Fluval 106, and the Aquastop feature on these filters is their weakest link. When the AquaStop is new it works great, and makes these filters very convenient to use. However, after a year or so, the plastic starts to lose its integrity, so the Aquastop becomes difficult to reinstall after I clean a Fluval 305. At least the AquaStop can be purchased at a discount so that it takes some of the sting out of having to replace them ever year or two.
Other than that I really like my Fluval 305 canister filters. The 305's a workhorse of a filter that does a fine job of keeping the water in two of my planted aquaria nice and clean.
The fact this filter (list price $270) usually sold for about $180 before it was replaced by Fluval's 06 series,
makes the ones which I purchased new for $89.95 and 119.95
great bargains.
And as a fishkeeper I am always looking to make this hobby as affordable as possible.

There's not much more to say. Bought this because one tip broke on my old Fluval 104 I got in a "box of fish junk" with a tank, stand, hood, heater, etc for $5 on Craigslist (SCORE!!) and I wanted to use it on my frog tank. The old one had a bottleneck where shed frog skins and plant matter and rocks would stop the whole thing up. The new manual aquastop allows free flow. Now the plant matter and frog skins get trapped in the filter where they belong. It looked too big when I got it I almost returned it because it is WAY larger than the one that comes with the filter. It is the new mechanism. It does fit and I love it!!Monday, February 10, 2014

Rio Plus 600 PT Venturi Water Pump for Aquarium
That being said, it works great! The tank is about 3' tall and pumping it up that height reduces the output to around 65 gph so it won't be my main pump and it will most likely be part of a power head or in the sump/skimmer. However its small size makes it great for any of these applications and with its adjustable directional venturi intake and suction cups it will fit almost anywhere.
Rio has always made quality products and for the price I got it for its well worth it.This pump works great for my cpr hob skimmer which I used this pump to replace an old one. 5 stars

I tried to find Abuliton genus information but all I kept finding were references to cannabis bushes the leaves on this abuliton are similar to the cannabis plant there's no denying it but since they are fake and silk, there's no danger. I first found one bag in my local fish store in the reptile section and figured I'd give it a shot for my tropical freshwater aquarium as a background plant but first I emailed Hagen company to hear it from them that it was safe for use in water with fish and they confirmed that it was. So I soaked them in a bucket of water conditioned with Prime and added them to my tank. I love it! I bought 4 more and they are very natural looking and hide all my equipment and tubing and provide hiding places for my fish. I highly recommend these. Exo-Terra by Hagen also come in Ficus, Ruscus, Mandarin and Amapallo.************************
update April 2010: These have been great for our Aquarium, and over time with some algae to them, they look pretty good. They don't fray as much as other silk plants do and only now after all this time are they showing signs of slight fraying the only problem is our plecos are constantly un-sticking them from the glass lol my advise is if you're just setting up your tank and it is dry still, place these where you want them and then, silicon the suction cup in that position so that they no longer move if you have sucker-mouth fish or large active tank busters. So if live plants are not for you for w/e reason, I do recommend these.

I was ready to send this back but once installed into my 20 gallon tall it actually looks great. A few quality issues so it only deserves 3 stars. The plant could use some more leaves to help cover the linking plastic. The suction cup is just okay, and I've already had it fall from the side. The back part by the suction cup is ugly so it needs to be suctioned to the back. I did have some metal wire exposed at the top by the suction cup and had to fix it. This does cover most of the back of my tank and my fish seem to be happy and playing through the leaves.Make sure to rinse and soak before adding to your tank.
