I have two of these hoods for one of my 55-gallon tanks. I personally have had no problems with these lights. They're cheaper and easier to deal with (in my opinion) than glass canopies and long strip lights.

I wanted to point out, however, that some people have had problems with the light dying after a few months (see the reviews on Petco's website for this product). I have not had this problem. But, if you should have this problem, try taking your light to your local aquarium specialty store; you can buy a new starter for $1.50 and have a working light again--much cheaper than buying a new one!

This review is for the 24" full hood for a rectangular tank. I got this strictly for the light fixture because the price for this full hood was similar to that of a single light fixture at the time of purchase.

This full hood comes in 2 parts. The first part is the light fixture which just sits on top of the hood. Some of the reviewers have given this product low marks because the light has failed. I wonder if any of the had it mail ordered and wonder if handling had to do with the light failing.

The hood itself is plastic and glass. The rear of the canopy has various punch out holes that you can punch out for cords and tubing. I like plastic strips better for that purpose as you can customize the size of the holes. The entire front is a lid that can be opened up to feed the fish. The hinge of this lid is rather flimsy and is just two thin pieces of plastic, but that shouldn't be a problem because if the hinges broke, I can just as easy lift the lid up.

I have a 55g tank (48" long) and you need two of these for that. You will just need one for a 20g tank measuring 24".

As a simple mechanical device to close the top of the tank, it works great. The light bulb itself is actually the important part and the expensive part as you need different bulbs to perform different tasks, such as growing plants, reefs, or just illuminating the tank, etc. On the whole, I have no complaints, it does its job well and was inexpensive.

This hood has poor quality. I had my old aquarium hood for 4 years and it worked well. But this one I only purchased it for a month and the light stopped working. Waste money.

This light is a cheap made junk. Had it for about 2 weeks & the light stopped working & the lid does not fit a 20 gallon tank! Had to have plexi glass cut to set the lid & light on top so I could have a lighted tank. Bulb was fine. I thought it was the switch & I took it out & just wired the light so you could just un plug & plug in whenever you want to use the light. Did not work. DON'T BUY! Save your money because not only did I waste $42, buy another $12 to get plexi glass cut & now I have to buy a new light! What a rip off!

Parts were mis-marked as to where they went together per the instructions. Also, hardware provided (4ea. Countersink Screws)that are used to hold on the top Plate were too short for installation. I had to go to my local Home Depot store to buy longer screws.

The instructions stated there were pre-drilled holes in the shelves to assist with assembly. There were no pre-drilled holes and we have to drill our own. There was damage around all the screw holes. This is a very nice looking stand, however, the difficulties to the assembly of the middle and top shelves squashes the enthusiasm a little.

Marina Betta Habitat - Halfmoon

I've owned the Marina betta kit "Zen cube" version before, and I have to say it was very pretty but too small for the fish. A betta should have ideally a gallon (or possibly more) for them to be healthy and swim around.

This new one is larger (almost 1 gallon) and a lot nicer.

I got the LED lamp with it and some blue glass "rocks" at the bottom, with a few live plants, it looks very pretty.

My betta loves it, I've even put my miniature heater next to the aquarium at times for him to feel warm this winter (bettas can handle various temperatures pretty well, but they're tropical fish from Thailand originally -so the warm makes them feel good).

He keeps making a lot of bubbles at the top (they call those bubble nest), which is a sign that he is happy.

I think this is just the right size for a betta aquarium, the others are just too small (some of them are horribly tiny for the fish), but this one has enough room for the fish to swim around. He seems to love the live plants as well.

Not to mention that with the lighting, blue rocks reflection, the fish and his live plants, this aquarium really does embellish my room!

EDIT: There has been other reviews of this aquarium, but after reading them I realize they haven't actually bought the product. They're just giving their thoughts. I didn't know Amazon would allow that but anyways, this is what I have to say: There's a rule with most animals cages/aquarium, and that is the bigger the better. Then, it really all depends how well you take care of your pets. Some people would just buy it as an ornament and forget about it, but others will actually take care of it. I've owned many aquariums in the past (including a large 120 gallon) and I can tell you that although the bigger the better, it really depends on how you take care of them.

There's a secret: DO NOT overfeed your fish. In nature, they barely eat anything (if they find something), that's why they naturally spend their lives crawling for food, that's what their life consist of essentially. But in a controlled environment, it can be tempting to give them as much food as they could eat. The problem is, fishes do not store fats like we do. And those pellets and other fish food we buy are nutritionally very, very rich.

I grew up in a home with a 120 gallons aquarium back in the days when I was living in Europe, and we would only feed them once a week. Some of those fishes have lived for longer than 10 years, and others for as long as I can remember off. Bigger is better, but care is key.

The bottom line is, if you're genuinely interested into "adopting" a pet betta fish, then read about their needs. The internet is a wonderful space to learn. Don't get an aquarium too small -they're fishes, they need to swim for them to stay healthy. This one is just the right size for a small betta aquarium.

Bought this for my first betta fish. Thought I knew about the proper keeping of bettas, but after some reading I realized I was misinformed.

While this bowl might be good as a hospital or quarantine, I wouldn't want it as an "everyday" tank. By the time you add a plant, there isn't any room for the fish. Having to do daily water changes (necessary for this size unfiltered tank) is a pain in the rear.

We've since upgraded to a 6.6 gallon.

From personal experience as well as from research, I would not keep a Betta in a tank smaller than 3 gallons. Bettas actually don't live their whole lives in small puddles; they live most of their lives in vast rice paddies, thousands of gallons of naturally filtrated and aerated water, and only live in small puddles of water for 2 to 3 months a year during the dry season.

What's more, fancy bettas aren't as hardy as their wild buddies, and need more space and stimulation. This 3 liters (I think that was the measurement, but either way I've seen these sold at stores and they're far too small) is not what I would keep a Betta in forever; maybe a temporary home as I cleaned his tank or maybe while setting up the real one, but that's it.

However, this would look awesome with some plants in it! :-D

Great shape and too bad not a five gallon at least!

45 years experience, background in biology et al and lived in Japan where rice patties are huge systems (and the local rivers are where wild betta's may enter in these systems as well are full of algaes (even the cyanobacteria which works symbiotically with the rice for nitrogen fixing). Wild betters (former reviewer) are tough btw and due to inbreeding for ages now commercially grown ones are not so but none the less their instincts and their psychology demand more space (which means better water quality) just as you could not survive long... as found on a fish forum...

In a cold bathroom, with no room to move, with a toilet that was "cleaned" once in a while (to be determined by outside forces not by your needs) and on occasion bits of dried up solid food you can not recognize metabolically, shoved under the door and labeled "food" UGH.

I am always stunned to see anything under a five actually (better water chemistry esp for beginners, just because they surface breathe (still do through gills btw it is a survival mechanism during drought times not meant for for-ever) does not mean they can do well with amonia (burns delicate multi layered gill tissues OUCH!) and in bacteria laden cold water (or proper temp for that matter and unless you have an expensive small heater you are subject to coming home with cooked fish)...

Betta's tails are a single layer thin and as many find out too later subject to bacterial invasion esp as they languish on the small torture chambers bottom where all the bacteria are brewing.

I am more stunned therefore that in spite of such cups being sold as proper environments for any fish, that any one (who apparently does not do any real research on the subject and this does not mean ask Wahoo! type forums where blind lead the blind) WOULD even consider buying one.

I've done hundreds of betta rescues and it is a horrific way to go.. fish btw have pain receptors just as we do, and some are more sensitive then ours esp around the mouth after all they need this to survive!

Please never put your fish, esp this intelligent, curious, loves to roam and look about lovely fish. They will greatly reward you if you just do some serious research and add plants, and great water quality in a decent sized tank. They are living beings not objects.

My daughter has a 3 gallon freshwater fish tank with 3 fish that we set-up about 4 months ago. I didn't clean it for two weeks and suddenly we had algae. I cleaned the tank but was worried about getting the water clear again and while doing research, I found an ad for Algone. I ordered it from Amazon and put it in with the filter. The water seemed to be getting better, but was still cloudy. Cleaned the tank again 1 week after putting Algone in the filter and replaced it with a new packet since there was algae all over the first one. Changed out about 20% of the water. My daughter was actually a little freaked out and kept asking how the water got so clean, and all I could say was "I don't know, but I am keeping Algone in there from now on!"

I was skeptical about this product and the ingredients are proprietary so I really had little faith that such a small package in a 30 gallon tank would work. Yet other reviews on various aquarium message boards gave it high marks, so I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't having a terrible algae problem, but enough so that the water just looked murky. Good lights...except they dont last very long. I have had 2 so far in 8 years.

Naturally the bulbs have to be replaced but the internal wiring becomes hard and brittle and no longer functions.

I just bought 4 new bulbs...approx $25 each but they wont all work. So do I buy a whole new unit that will last maybe 3 years. Or change to a new product. But I know this one will fit. Hmmmmmm?? Maybe this is typical of all lights?

JW Pet Company 10-Inch Desktop Aquarium Algae Scrubber

I have a small 5 gallon acrylic aquarium and bought this because it was supposed to be safe for acrylic. It left fine scratches in my aquarium. The scratches are on the inside of the tank so now I'm stuck with them until one day I drain the tank to try and repair it (which is not going to happen anytime soon). Stay away from this.

This scrubber does just what it should. I am using to clean algae from a 5 gallon hex tank which is acrylic. Important to get ones that are intended for acrylic so you don't scratch the tank. This cleans without scratching. I generally do not have tank exposed to direct sun and so I haven't needed a product such as this before. I took a guess this would meet my needs and it really has.

This is a great product. Worked very well on my acrylic fish tank. You need to be careful and follow the instructions. The main reason you would end up with scratches on your tank is sand or gravel getting caught in the scrubber. So be careful when scrubbing the lower portion of your fish tank. It is pretty small as well, about the size of a wallet in size. I recommend it.

They have nice heavy weighted bottoms that stay where you put them and are so easy to lift out and rinse off with each water change or cleaning. I have two african dwarf frogs and they love to hide. My three gallon tank is wider than it is tall; these frogs have to swim to the top to breathe. These plants are strong enough for them to rest on, so they can go to the top of the tank easier. They love having more places to hide as well! These plants are really pretty, and they don't float up at all (so low maintenance!)

Everything about this kit, from the heater, to the hood, to the tank and even the literature that comes with it, is top notch. One weak point, though, is the filter (which is an Aqueon Quitflow 30). My beef with the filter is that it is too susceptible to media clogging up and causing the water to bypass. For more details, see my review of the filter by itself. Also, make sure to check the tank thoroughly for scratches, especially on the front. The box that this tanks is packaged in does not protect the front glass. I'm glad I bought this kit at a local pet store, because it allowed me to exchange it for another one when I got the first one home and discovered a big scratch on the front that could not be seen until I got it home. You will also find some little silicone stringies stuck to various random parts of the glass (mostly near the sealed edges, as you might expect). These are easily removed with a razor blade widget.

Supreme Mag-Drive Utility Pump Model 3

After multiple attempts by my persistant nightly visitors to drain my pond and leave my supreme mag-drive high and dry, this little pump has triumphed over these juvenile racoons and just keeps going until I add more water in the morning. The pump was just a bit different than the photo but it seems to be quite capable for my smaller pond. It's energy efficient, quite compact, and should last for years. I wish it had come with a cord longer than ten feet, however. The pre-filter is easy to clean and keeps out any debris that would impede the impeller. I like the fact that it is quiet and that I can purchase replacement parts if needed.

Love this ornament! For those of you who had problems with the leaves being bent and out of shape when you unboxed this item, read on. The leaves were bent and crushed on mine too; all I did was get my hair dryer, set it on high, and aim the hot air on the back of the leaves first and then on the front. I even melted the glue slightly and rearranged the leaves to my liking. Let it cool and you have a beautiful aquarium ornament!

I was looking for a main piece for a five gallon hex tank and this fits the bill wonderfully. I liked it so much that I ordered a second one for another tank. If I were doing a larger tank I would probably get a couple could be used in the foreground sides or background. Looks wonderful under water. Holding up with one of my bettas who is otherwise known for shredding plants. I would highly recommend. I will be adding pictures as well.

Laguna PowerJet 2400 Electronic Fountain Pump Kit

I just purchased the PowerJet 2400 and the pump cage was improperly assembled at the factory. The top was forced during assembly and broke a hole in the top of the cage. I spoke with a Laguna (Hagen) representative who expected me to ship the unit to them and they would decide the course of action. This is completely unacceptable as I need a pump now. Their attitude of "the customer is wrong until proven right" is not one I care to do business with. I expect to receive a non-defective product whenever I buy something and sure do not expect to pay freight to return their defective product to them.

10/18/2010 I patched up the broken portion and have been using this pump continuously for almost 2 years and it has functioned perfectly. The small holes in the cage do plug up with algae growing on the screen and in some particularly heavy growth periods it has to be cleaned frequently. I have compared several pumps and this is the lowest wattage pump for the flow rate I have found. Actual measurements even taking consideration of the power factor it draws only 83 Watts. I am completely satisfied with the pump and am considering another only this time the Max Flo pump for the larger holes in the cage.

I chose this pump because it is the direct replacement for the one I replaced in my small fish pond. The price was the best I found by far and I received the pump sooner than was expected.
