Supreme Pondmaster AP-40 Pond Air Pump 2900 cu. in. per Minu
It's easy to maintain, just don't let it get dirty and clean out the filter every now and then. The filter has easy access in the back of the pump. The original filter element becomes rather flimsy after a few washes and should be replaced from time to time. However, I don't think this is unexpected for any pump.
It comes with a plastic air manifold which not very good. It's probably better to buy a separate, quality manifold for distribution of air. Or you can modify it for temporary use until it breaks then you can get a quality manifold. The manifold itself, has too many outputs (more than efficiently necessary), none of which can be closed, so unless you're using them all, you're wasting a lot of air. I just used hot-glue to seal the outputs I didn't want to use. The manifold itself isn't even quality plastic so the outputs will eventually snap off especially if used outdoors.
Discounting the shoddy air manifold attachment, it's a great pump, with good output and easy care.
Update 4/14/2013:
The original plastic air manifold finally fell apart, the plasic was so brittle it was leaking air everywhere and I bought this metal air divider which is working great so far: Hydrofarm AAPADIV6 Active Aqua 6-Outlet Copper Air Divider.
Meanwhile, the air pump still runs like a champ.I have a pond (or a pool, since it is pretty small) that needs some circulation--it has a muddy bottom and lot of leaves and other organic crud. I tried water pumps, but they always get clogged.
I got one of these, put a garden hose on it (cut off the ends and shoved them onto the pump and the aerator that came with it) and dropped the aerator into about 7 feet of water(with a brick to hold it down). It works great. In only a couple of days, the water is a lot clearer. It looks like the bubbles will be plenty to help the fish survive when the water gets low and during the winter.
This is made for a small pond. It is not going to aerate an acre, but it is still putting out a lot of air. The aerator is made so that you could connect a dozen aquariums to it, but they would need to be pretty big aquariums, since it puts out a LOT of air.
The only thing annoying is that I had to put it in an enclosure to protect it from the weather. It would have been nice if it had been weatherproof. Also, if you use it inside, the noise would probably drive you crazy. Outside, it is not a problem because you have to be pretty close to hear it.

I have a six foot long, 150 gallon fresh water tank, and I'm using a combination of two bubble wands to form a five-and-a-half foot curtain of air bubbles in the background. The tank is 30 inches deep, and at different times, I've used a Tetratec Deep Water DW96-2 and a Super Luft SL-65 to drive the bubble wands, and an additional air stone. Both the Tetratec and SL-65 have been able to create bubbles, but were not able to create the curtain effect I had hoped for. A metal part in the SL-65 failed after about a year and-a-half,... the AP-40 was bought as a replacement. The Supreme Pondmaster AP-40 succeeded in creating the curtain of bubbles I was looking for, and is so effective, that I have to bleed off excess air though an open valve to atmosphere. Granted the AP-40 is more expensive than the other pumps, however my intent when I bought the other two air pumps was to find an air pump that could create the curtain of bubbles, (cost at the time was not a consideration). I believe I may have been able to achieve the same affect with the Supreme Pondmaster AP-20, but I wanted to err on the positive side. An added benefit,... the AP-40 I received is no louder than either of the other two air pumps. Great product. Very satisfied.Read Best Reviews of Supreme Pondmaster AP-40 Pond Air Pump 2900 cu. in. per Minu Here
Purchased pump about 3 years ago and it worked fine until it recently had a major drop in air pressure. I ordered a diaphragm kit assuming that would fix it. In the process of installing the kit I noted the cause of the pressure drop: the plastic base had a crack in it. I contacted Danner to purchase a new base and was told it was not a "saleable" item. They suggested I buy a new pump. Absurd! It's a plastic part I could replace in 5 minutes with nothing more than a phillips screwdriver. So I picked up some JB PlasticWeld (great product!) and patched the crack from both the inside and outside of the plastic base. So far that appears to have fixed it...pressure is great. Bottom line is this a very good item unless you need a replacement part they refuse to sell you.Want Supreme Pondmaster AP-40 Pond Air Pump 2900 cu. in. per Minu Discount?

API Melafix Antibacterial Fish Remedy
As soon as I saw the damage, I checked water conditions immediately and all was well no ammonia, pH normal, etc., etc. Rather than take a chance, I thought it best to treat for fin rot as that area just seemed like a strange place for a bite or nip. I decided to try Melafix first before anything more drastic. The instructions said treat for 7 days then do a 25% water change. The guys get a regular partial weekly water change anyway, so I did a partial water change, treated for 7 days and did another partial water change right on schedule.
The instructions say to repeat treatment if necessary; however, I decided to not re-treat as the damage seemed to be getting much better. Today is day 9 with no additional treatment and my sweet little fishie looks great! Not quite 100% but real close I'd say right around 98% cured. If I didn't know the damage was there, I couldn't tell the difference. Since I knew about it, obviously I was aware of what to look for, but right now he looks very, very good.
Since the only change made was the addition of the Melafix, I'd have to say that solved the problem.

I was skeptical when I bought this product and Pimafix when we noticed that our Glofish and Black Moors were sick. (They were that way when we bought them) It quickly helped regrow the fins that fin rot had taken from the Black Moors. We used it in conjunction with Pimafix and it worked great. It was also a great help when we accidently put a Puffer Fish in the tank with them. The Puffer tries to eat the Black Moors and tore up the fins and left gashes in one of them. After removing the Puffer Fish and rehoming him, we started treatment of Melafix and Pimafix. The tails and fins on our fish quickly started growing back and now we have two happy Black Moors swimming around in our tank. This is a great product that treats open red sores, fin and tail rot, eye cloud, pop eye, body slime and mouth fungus, and open body wounds. Myself and my fish highly recommend this product.Read Best Reviews of API Melafix Antibacterial Fish Remedy Here
Melafix and Pimafix are two of the flagship products by fish care giant API(aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc) A homeopathic anti-bacterial treatment that works wonders in fresh, brackish and salt water aquariums. Unlike medications which are in essence chemicals Melafix uses a soluble extract called "Melaleuca"Melaleuca is derived from Tea trees and is extraordinarily effective in treating and curing a multitude of problems including:
* Frayed Fins
* Fin and Tail Rot
* Cloudy Eye
* Pop Eye
* Body Fungus
* Slime Coat Deterioration
The typical treatment for any of the above is a daily dose of 5 ml per 10 gallons of water for seven days. Usually you'll see significant improvement within 48 hours it's that fast and that effective.Melafix can also be used when quarantining new fish and adding post quarantine fish into your community tanks.It's important to remember to remove activated charcoal during treatment.
Melafix can foam slightly but will never cloud your water or change your parameters.It's a safe, gentle highly effective product that I've depended on for decades. After 40 years of keeping fish Melafix is one of those products I highly recommend to anyone, novice to expert.This is something that all fish owners need to keep on hand. I had a goldfish that got really BAD fin rot, another one of my fish wouldn't stop picking on him and so his fins started to rot from his wounds. It got so bad that he hardly had any fins left! Then 2 years later, the poor guy got stuck in the pump because he was sick and couldn't free himself. The pump damaged his fins pretty badly. Both times this stuff healed him up perfectly, and his fins grew back entirely. They are as full and beautiful as ever before. Just follow the instructions on the bottle and there's no reason why it shouldn't work!

Marineland Pillar Aquarium Kit, 6-Gallon
First and foremost, the shape of the tank gives a funhouse mirror effect to viewing the fish. It's really unpleasant and frustrating if you actually want to be able to see your fish undistorted. That's not the product's fault, though, that happens with any cylindrical tank.
The tank is acrylic which isn't necessarily a negative, but it's extruded acrylic which is not scratch resistant whatsoever. I was slowly lowering a plastic log decoration into the tank, and it gently touched the side. Scratched forever.
There is no lip on the tank. The top, as pictured, is not attached, and you cannot fill up to the top of it without having water spill out. In fact, you can't even fill up the tank to the top of just the acrylic, because water movement will cause water to spill out as will turning off the filter and having the extra water in the filter empty into the tank. This means a relatively constant splashing noise, as the water level needs to be lower than the filter's output.
Speaking of the lid, the lid is where the LED lights are, and is not disconnectable from the rest of the setup. There are wires with almost no slack that run to it, which means you cannot take the top off the tank and set it down. You have to rest it precariously on top of the filter (the wires are too short to lay it flat) if you want to put any decorations in, as the clear plastic flap on top is prohibitively small.
In fact, the filter and lights are all wired together, so you cannot replace the built-in filter. In fact, even if it wasn't all wired together, you couldn't replace it because it is literally built into the back of the tank. Also, want to put in a heater, a bubbler, or anything that involved wires or tubes going into the tank? Bad news, there are ZERO areas through which to route such cables. Cleaning and maintaining this tank is made exceptionally difficult by these design choices.
Now, on a more positive note, the filtration and lighting are fantastic. The built-in filtration is a marineland penguin 100, so, if you're going to be forever stuck with a filter for a small tank, that's not a bad one to be stuck with. It kept the tank crystal clear and healthy. Also, the blue "night" lighting feature is gorgeous with the right decorations and fish.
My basic impression of this tank is that they cut too many corners to make the tank look streamlined and to keep the material cost down. I wouldn't recommend this tank for anything other than a hospital or planted tank. Plants do look very good in it.I had this tank for 6 months. The lights over heated and melted the top of the tank. Could not get the smell of burnt plastic out of it so I had to get a new tanks. It killed 2 of my fish. Called customer service and all they would do was send me a new lid with lights to replace the melted one IF i sent them my melted one. Which is pointless since the entire tank is no good. Customer service is will not help you and the tank has electrical issues. do NOT buy this tanks!!!!

I've been a aquarium owner for more than 40 years. Just moved into a small apartment and decided to get a small one for a small stand I had. Big mistake. I've never seen something so cheaply made, not even a real filter. The so called acrylic is cheep plastic. This product is a total ripoff. I wished I would read more reviews before I bought this. I haven't even put water in it and I can tell you It wont last a month. Petsolutions should be ashamed to sell crap like this. Even if I replace the the $10.00 filter then the LED lights wont work because they are wired into the filter pump, all on one circuit, so if you upgrade the filter the LED lights won't work. Enough said, don't waste your money.Read Best Reviews of Marineland Pillar Aquarium Kit, 6-Gallon Here
After dealing with the headache of a Fluval hipster tank with all proprietary pumps and filters I wanted a tank that still had style but also had more common filtration elements. The Pillar is perfect in both those regards. First to address the complaint you can't add heaters or aerators, if you have a simple drill and a 3/8" bit you can remedy that problem easily. Cleaning the filter is about 1000 times easier than any Fluval I have had, in that you swap out the charcoal filter like a tea bag, pop off the intake tube, flush it and you are all set. The bio wheel sounded cheesy to me at first, but it seems to be doing a great job balancing the tank nice and clear. With reviews all over the place I was weary to go with the Pillar but I'm glad I did. I would just recommend you verify the pump works before going through the whole set up. I did that because of the guy who bought it for his sister, and sure enough the pump I got seemed weak and couldn't make the biowheel spin. I took it back and the wrong AC adapter (18W) was included when it should have been a 30w. Minor for such a sleek and affordable tank. Anybody with a shred of aquarium experience will find this tank to be a breeze to setup and maintain.This is a vey good tank and looks great setup. These other reviewers that say you can't change anything on this are crazy. I cut one wire to pump wired it to lights and bam works perfect now I can put any filter I want. People there is plenty of room for heater and whatever you want to add. Anyone with any common sense at all can modify this easily and make it how ever they want it. So yea maybe out of the box might not be the best setup but can be made however you want it with any brains at all. Just my two cents!!Friday, August 29, 2014

I have to say that I have used a few different canister filters and the Fluval's tubing always bothered me, while other companies use basic clear plastic tubing, fluval decides to use ribbed tubing that is very difficult to fit with attachments unless you buy THEIR rubber couplings sold separately. I have used Aquatop filters easily with PVC pipes and fittings you can get at any home depot for pennies. Fluval stuff you need to buy online for $5-$10 each.You be the judge.

It looks like it would hang on the side of the tank, but its way to small.The gap is almost gone after you add the hose to it, and even without the hose
it will not hang on the tank. I cant see any way to use this other then just putting the hose on and
dropping it in the water. :(

TOM Aquarium Rapids Mini Canister hang-on-the-tank C-80, 80gph
UPDATE: My shipping charge for returning the original unit were also refunded, Amazon's return policy is excellent!
UPDATE 2: Jan. 2012, it leaks, replaced it with a Finnex 360. It's a little larger, we'll see how long this lasts.I got this to use with a 2 gallon betta tank. The plan was to use it as a filter and also increase total amount of water. It seemed perfect as the spray bar would avoid causing a current which my betta does not like. For some reason i just assumed that it would have a flow control, but, as it turns out, there is no flow control and the spay bar sprays water much like that in a kitchen sink. Its way too powerful for smaller tanks. Dont bother with this for tanks 5 gallons or less. The quality of the hoses are suspect, they dont seem like they would last. I got the palm azoo instead for my 2 gallon betta and its perfect! The flow control turned all the way down provides a gentle filter output.

11/02/2010 CORRECTION. I did exactly as the buyer "Professor Bubba" suggested in review of "Zoo Med 501 Turtle Canister Filter" : I replaced the filter that came with pump with a nylon bag ($1.50) purchased at pet shop filled with over-the-counter activated carbon (got the entire carton for $6.50)and could not believe the results. It's been two weeks so far and water is clear. Thank you Bubba. ..and Yes this filter seem to be capable of producing crystal-clear water.---------------
10/05/2010
CONS: The filter never produces crystal-clear water, it always murky. Filter requires cleaning weekly. Perhaps it's just not powerful enough for a 10 gal tank.
PROS: Whisper quiet. Quick and easy set-up and maintenance.
Read Best Reviews of TOM Aquarium Rapids Mini Canister hang-on-the-tank C-80, 80gph Here
Initial thoughts:The filter is dead silent. I switched from a HOB Whisper filter to this canister filter.. and wow. After leaving the room it's being used in for several hours and walking back in, I thought it had stopped workingI couldn't hear a thing!
The filter media included is so-so. Though I haven't been able to see how well the ceramic media works, I can already tell that the other included media wasn't all that great. Read up on what kind of filtration you want(chemical, mechanical, biological, etc.) and make your own media.
SO FAR, the only con I have:
The hoses. They're tragically short and hard to manipulate. You can't bend them into place at all. I may switch out the included hose for a different one.
I spent a good quarter of an hour wrestling with the hoses to let the water distribute through my TEN GALLON tank as efficiently as possible, and it's still not what I want. Oh well.
Overall, it's easy to modify this little canister with your own filter media, it's silent, and it's powerful.
----EDIT----
I've had this sucker running for a month, so it's time for an update.
The hoses seem to have loosened a bit, so that's kind of nice. I'm still planning on replacing them with longer and more flexible tubing if I can.
No leaks, no damage, the impeller is still running smoothly without any noise.
You'll want to make a media basket for the ceramic. I'm working on a plan to make a partition for the side that gets the water from the tank so the pipe leading in isn't so difficult to shove back in after cleaning. Again, if you're going to get this filter, prepare to play around with the filter media.
ALSOthis little guy does NOT have a shut off valve. Be warned! Not only can this make things messy but it can be difficult to prime the filter again. I'll add shut off valves when I replace the hoses so I don't get fish water all over my dorm. If you don't build one, get a bucket or cut a gallon milk jug in half to catch any water that comes out and QUICKLY lift the top of the filter above your tank to stop the water flow!
So far, it's working great on my little planted tank. It's perfect for my Betta boy and his Corydoras catfish friends. My bio load may be small at the moment, but it's keeping the water wonderfully clean with minimal maintenance on both the tank and the filter.
Overall, this filter has some major flaws, but it is great for the price you pay.
----Last edit----
The filter has been running strong for almost a year now. Still silent and still good at what it does. If I have any complaint it's that this little guy has ruined HOB filters for me.
Admittedly, I never bothered with replacing the tubing, but I will update if I do.

Ok first off this canister filter has great potential i bought one on sale when i saw the carbon bag in it i immediately tossed it out (garbage). how to set it up : first get a peice of bio foam and cut it to fit snug on top of intake side then put some aquarium cotton , then cut a polishing pad to size then u have the ceramic rings at the bottom on the return side i put in a marine land activated carbon bag wrapped it around the return tube , wallah pro filtration five stage filter in seconds i use it for my 20 g long marine tank and the water is crystal clear for a whole month !!!then flow starts to slow down no problem just do ur monthly maintenance and flow will be back to normal. Great product Cheers!!!!Saturday, May 3, 2014
Aqueon Mini Bow 5 Desktop Aquarium Kit
In mine, I've got 4 zebra danios and 2 African dwarf frogs. All seem to be quite happy and healthy. I divided the space up with rocks, driftwood and plants. It looks really nice, while giving the frogs places to hide and burrow, and the fish a lot to explore.
The filter isn't very powerful, but from what I understand, you don't want anything too strong for the species that do best in small tanks (dwarf frogs, bettas, etc.).
To maintain, I just replace 2 gallons of water once each week, and rinse out the filter. I don't understand the complaints here about not being able to find replacement filters--I just ordered a set of 3 from Amazon for about $5. They do get gunky pretty fast, so I plan on replacing them monthly.
Somebody else mentioned that the light bulb burnt out in less than a month. Mine's still going, but I only keep it on for about 12 hours a day. When it does burn out I'll probably replace it with a compact florescent anyway. Less heat than an incandescent, brighter colors, and longer life.
I did have to buy a $15 heater, but that's species dependent. For the most part, I think this is a great starter kit. I got it for my son's room. He likes looking at the fish and frogs, and it's pretty easy for me to maintain, so I'm happy with it.I bought this tank to be used as a segregation tank for my new or ill fish.
I have a 45 gallon tank that houses freshwater fish. When I buy new fish, I like to segregate them and treat them automatically for illness before I put them in with my other fish. I have learned the hard way, that it is much easier to do this than treat my large tank and all the fish when just one is ill.
It has everything I wanted, (filter, light, and small size), except I did want a heater as well. (Better for treating ill fish. Truthfully, I don't know any kits that actually include the heater...) I had a small heater left over from a previous tank and use that. Otherwise, I would have bought one that actually fits the Mini Bow. It's size makes it very easy to clean. I don't keep my fish in there long term, but for my purposes...it is GREAT!
It is a perfect starter tank for kids, too. They can try the whole fish thing without overcommitting to a bigger tank that an adult would HAVE to clean for safety sake.
THE FILTERS CAN BE ORDERED on . My local fish store and our petsmart also only carry the medium and larger filters. My local store is trying to supply the small ones, but for now, I am fine ordering them online.

I have 2 of these tanks a 5gal and 2gal. I have had these tanks for YEARS. They have not been running for the 5 years I have had them but I have used them for betta fish, plants, breeding shrimp, raising Fry, and hospital tank. It's been my back up tank. Right now I have it set up for breeding Bee shrimp. I have since switched the filter and added a heater. I love the light hood never had a problem. I use a 13watt CF light and it works great and the plants love it.So my main problem with this tank is quality. It's not a quality acrylic tank. The bow front distorts viewing. It's hard to clean off alge because you don't want to scratch the plastic. Also the small bow shape makes it a bit tricky to clean with a magnet cleaner. I put an old sock on my hand and used that to clean it. I like the size of this tank but I am looking for another tank it's time to replace it.
Nice for the price don't expect much it scratches real easy. Great little starter tank for betta fish or kids room I have been keeping fish for 13 years I have 5 tanks up and running ranging in 100gal 5gal.

Algone Aquarium Water Clarifier and Nitrate Remover, Small
Just be patient..it takes time, and once it kicks in, you won't have to worry about algae again!My daughter has a 3 gallon freshwater fish tank with 3 fish that we set-up about 4 months ago. I didn't clean it for two weeks and suddenly we had algae. I cleaned the tank but was worried about getting the water clear again and while doing research, I found an ad for Algone. I ordered it from Amazon and put it in with the filter. The water seemed to be getting better, but was still cloudy. Cleaned the tank again 1 week after putting Algone in the filter and replaced it with a new packet since there was algae all over the first one. Changed out about 20% of the water. Next day water was looking better, the day after that it was suddenly really milky looking and we felt like we took a step back & then today, 10 days after adding the Algone to the tank, we turn the light on and the water is completely clear! I am talking sparkling clear. I don't think it's ever been this clear, clear. My daughter was actually a little freaked out and kept asking how the water got so clean, and all I could say was "I don't know, but I am keeping Algone in there from now on!"

I was skeptical about this product and the ingredients are proprietary so I really had little faith that such a small package in a 30 gallon tank would work. Yet other reviews on various aquarium message boards gave it high marks, so I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't having a terrible algae problem, but enough so that the water just looked murky. PH and nitrates etc. were within range and I do regular water changes so wasn't sure what would help. Didn't want to add any harsh chemicals. Well, within two days my cichlid tank was crystal clear. The fish are happy and healthy. Can't ask for more!Read Best Reviews of Algone Aquarium Water Clarifier and Nitrate Remover, Small Here

I've been happy using one small packet each 2 weeks in my filter to keep nitrates under control in a 29gal freshwater tank. Tank is heavily planted with schools of tetras. I have had ongoing algae problems and this helps considerably. The small packets are easy to get into my filter and don't break open. I like 'em.Monday, February 24, 2014

San Francisco Bay Brand ASF71109 Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp for Fresh and Saltwater Fish, 20gm
I have a few larger sized fantail goldfish in a 40 gallon tank. Since I am a casual fish owner I just always assumed the flake food and pellets contained the correct ingredients to provide a fish with a balanced diet.
I was wrong. And, now I am looking at my most favorite fish in the tank next to me sitting on the bottom of the tank suffering with constipation.
For months this fish would swim and lay upside down. It was upside down as much as it was right side up. It wasn't until it stopped swimming altogether that I realized I had neglected to balance it's diet properly and it is severly constipated.
Brine shrimp are recommended to prevent this condition. And, your fish won't necessarily exhibit clear signs like mine did.
So, add this item to your fishes diet and do them a favor. My fish love it, and go crazy when it hits the water. Time will tell if I waited too long for the upside swimming fish.
In my opinion there are a lot of fillers in this product. It is difficult to tell by the label (see below) since I don't know the make-up of brine shrimp, just basing that on appearance. But, there is a product out there that is not in chunk form and is not grey-ish in color. It is pure, freeze dried brine shrimp. No fillers. When you open the bottle there are literally small shrimp you take out one by one to feed the fish. I won't mention the brand or store out of respect for this product, because it works great also!
Crude Protein: Min 55%
Crude Fat: Min 7%
Crude Ash: Max 18%
Crude Fiber: Max 3%
Moisture: Max 7%This is one food I can honestly say all of my aquatic pals love. My african dwarf frog, betta, danios, tetra, etc, ALL love this stuff. It's kind of clumpy and in my opinion needs to be broken up/shredded a bit. But other than that, this stuff is great.I'm not impressed by this food. It seems to disintegrate to powder rather than anything resembling actual brine shrimp. The shrimp powder is too small to catch the fishes' interest which just ends up with unfed fish and a polluted tank.

The pincers quickly become inoperable. I have to open it by hand and reset it so it can grab something else. It's mechanism broke by the 1st week I had it, with only a few uses.Read Best Reviews of TOM Aquarium Accessories Gardener Large Multi-Tool-grabbing & trimming Here
The jaws do not open very far and after one use they no longer open at all on their own. I have to open them and then get the tongs into position and try to grab whatever I am after. if I miss I have to bring the entire unit out of the water. Manually open the jaws and then try again. It's still better than sticking my entire arm in the tank though. It would have been a great product if the jaws did not stick.Want TOM Aquarium Accessories Gardener Large Multi-Tool-grabbing & trimming Discount?
I've had reef pickers and most fail... get's rusted, fall apart etc... this product is a step above the rest but still a little lacking.Ive had it for a few weeks now and i like it, its nimble and does just what i would expect.
I also like the fact the picker is slightly angled for getting between rocks.
The only downside is that sometimes when you close the pickers it doesnt spring back open when you release it.
It's just a slight inconvenience as you have to manually open it near the trigger. If not for that, this would get 5 stars from me.
