Hagen CO2 Natural Plant System Bubble Counter with Suction Cup and Tubing
I think this unit is better than using an air stone, bubbling into an upside down cup and certainly better than just letting an air line bubble into the tank.
In my experience, you will still have CO2 loss because not all the bubbles will be dissolved before they run through the unit and bubble to the surface of the water. However, it is still fairly efficient and very easy to set up. All you do is attached the air line that is connected to your CO2 source to the plastic drip tip that is included and then the bubbles slowly pass through a maze of bubble paths, dig zagging their way until they reach the top of the unit. Like I said, there will still be bubbles that pass through the top and disperse to the surface of the water.
My preferred method to diffusing CO2 bubbles into the water is by forcing water to mix with the bubbles. This can easily be accomplished by using a Rio Power head connected to a small bottle that the CO2 line is also connected to. This should completely dissolve the CO2 bubbles. You can find an already made system online for around 35-50 bucks. Or you can make one yourself for around 15 bucks. I made my own and it works beautifully. You also get the added benefit of having extra water current flow (which most fish appreciate).
But for a simple, cheap and easy to set up solution for dissolving CO2 bubbles into the aquarium, this Hagen diffuser is a good way to go. Make sure when you set it up that you set the unit as low as it will go in the aquarium (the bottom touching the gravel) so that the CO2 bubbles have maximum time to travel before reaching the water surface (and after that wasted).
As far as just a bubble counter, this is probably the most fun unit to watch that you can buy. My kids love watching the bubbles zig zag through the unit until the bubbles reach the top (cheap entertainment).Don't be dismayed if at first it seems like the bubbles are getting built up in certain areas. This is part of the break-in process and it will fix itself. Once some bio-slime (mmmm, bio slime...) gets built up on it, the bubbles go up the ladder smoothly.
I'm using mine with a homemade CO2 system and I'm already seeing results. I would recommend "The Ladder" to anyone who is using a DIY method and doesn't have enough pressure to properly utilize a ceramic diffuser. Plus, you don't really need a separate bubble counter to monitor your CO2 output. You can see every bubble that comes out and tailor your CO2 production accordingly.
Summary: for the price, seems to work great. Low tech and effective.

I have used a glass/ceramic diffuser for two years with my yeast based co2 system. This worked well enough and plants have grown pretty well. However, these do get blocked and there is a danger of back pressure causing the bottles to explode. They can be cleaned but sometimes difficult to remove the hose once it becomes hardened without breaking the glass. I also tired of seeing all those tiny bubbles floating around the tank.I don't know exactly how much co2 dissolved in terms of ppm, however, pH fell from 7.9/8.0 to 7.3/7.4 when I started injecting it 2 yrs ago, so seems pretty effective.
As the diffuser was due for replacement again I decided to try a ladder this time it's brilliant!
I agree that it looks pretty cool to watch, and yes, the bubbles did clump at first but after leaving it overnight it was working properly the following morning. I did fiddle with the angle for some time I think you just need to leave it alone and give it time to settle.
I no longer have loads of tiny bubbles and my pH has dropped further now to 7.0, so this is definitely getting more into the water than the ceramic diffuser did. I also found that the old diffuser tended to create much finer bubbles when the mixture started to tire and the flow rate subsided, meaning that more probably dissolved than did when the mixture was fresh.
The bubbles get much smaller as they travel up the ladder, and as they decrease in size they also slow down. This means they catch up with each other, merge, and pop out of the top about the same size as the bubbles which enter at the bottom. However, they enter at 1 per second at the bottom and pop out of the top about every 10 seconds. This suggest a 90% absorption rate (hope that makes sense!).
Some day these are hard to disguise. This model attaches flat to the side so isn't very wide from the front view at all it is not intrusive in my tank at all.
Of course, the system is now low pressure so the danger of explosion is eliminated.

This is one of the best setups especially if you are running a DIY CO2 system (basically a bottle with sugar and yeast :)IT is a bubble counter and a difuser all in one. You can watch the bubbles travel up the ladder and if you install a control valve you can adjust how many bubbles come out.
Be careful with installing control valves on diy CO2 as if you close it too much it can blow up and cause a huge mess. Please research these methods before just slapping a bottle together and putting it on your tank
Back to product it is great. If at first you don't succeed wait. :)

Seems to be a very efficient co2 diffuser. Give it about a day for the natural slime to build up on it so the bubbles will slide easily. Good quality stuff, Very easy to set up!Saturday, October 25, 2014
Fluval Motor Seal Ring for External Filter
Pro tip when you need to get saltwater gunk out of your filter, take the O ring off of the filter before you soak it (the filter box) in vinegar the acid destroys the rubber of the O ring!I couldn't stop my filter from leaking no doubt cause it was 8+ years old and had the original seal. I was also having problems that before it started not sealing, it would leak upon power start up after an electrical outage. Good thing I keep a plastic container underneath it cause it filled it up and almost overflowed. Now with the new seal, it doesn't leak anymore.

I ordered this for a fluval 205. I have no idea how old the unit is because I got it with a used aquarium that I bought. The fluval canister leaked like crazy. I ordered the seal with a slim hope that it would work. To my suprise it doesn't leak at all now and runs like new. I'm very impressed. If your fluval is leaking order this.drip, drip, drip....Fixed it! I guess after three years it was going to leak. Changed the o-ring and... no leak!Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Mr. Aqua 7. 5 Gallon Frameless Glass Aquarium Tank 12 x 12 x 12 Inch
And while they don't have quite the clarity of the Aqua Design Amano aquariums, they are close enough, nearly as well constructed, and a fraction of the price for a similar sized tank.
Given that I have only owned these tanks for under a year, I will update this review in the future, to document how they stand up over time.
Thus far, the Mr. Aqua line of aquariums continues to represent some of the best value in aquariums on the consumer market.
I would also like to see this company build some low profile aquariums like the Aqua Design Amano F series.
In particular the ADA 90-F and 120-F. However, at a more reasonable price. The 90-F and 120-F were beautiful looking aquariums, however at about 15 gallons and 18 gallons respectively, and $500 and $800 each, it's no wonder ADA has chosen to discontinue them.
These aquariums were simply too overpriced for most fishkeepers to justify purchasing, given their nano size.
If Mr. Aqua can manufacture these aquariums for around $150, in my opinion, they will sell every tank they build.

One other note , on the label is says "made in china" cheep for a reason !I saw this product here on Amazon and was initially skeptical on how good it would actually be, but I am happy to report that it works just as good as the name brand products in my Fluval 306. There was no excessive carbon powder, the carbon was uniform in size and absorbed water just like the expensive brands. I will definitely buy this product again!

Instant Ocean SCPS-150 SeaClone Protein Skimmer, 150-Gallon
Buy Instant Ocean SCPS-150 SeaClone Protein Skimmer, 150-Gallon Now
I've used many Marineland products for over 25 years on my freshwater tanks (their Magnum canister filters are excellent) and while I'm sure they make many other great products, the SeaClone Protein Skimmer ain't one of them. The problem inherent with this product is you are CONSTANTLY and FOREVER adjusting the air intake valve (and the air valve they supply is crummy--I had to replace that with something more accurate). When it's working properly, it works fairly well, but compared to say, a Remora Protein Skimmer, it doesn't work THAT well really. I'd estimate it worked properly 45 to 50 percent of the time, but when you have tons of money invested in a reef aquarium, you want something that will work properly and efficiently. I understand some rework can be done on the unit to enhance it's performance, but really, while it's not the most expensive skimmer out there, why should one have to go to all that trouble? Save your money and for another $65, you can get yourself a Remora Pro Protein Skimmer that is practically maintenance free and starts working almost from the day you plug it in.Read Best Reviews of Instant Ocean SCPS-150 SeaClone Protein Skimmer, 150-Gallon Here
We had to upgrade our protein skimmer when we upgraded our tank. We went from a 75 gallon tank with a 100 gallon SeaClone to a 125 gallon tank that needed the 150 gallon skimmer. We trust Instant Ocean and MarineLand products the most because they have always served us best in caring for our fish, both salt and freshwater, so it was a no-brainer to me to go immediately for the SeaClone over the various other skimmers available in the size we needed.Want Instant Ocean SCPS-150 SeaClone Protein Skimmer, 150-Gallon Discount?

JW Pet Company Smart Temp Standing Thermometer Aquarium Accessory
The fins you see at the bottom serve as an anchor, the fins have weight and are shaped to help the thermometer stay in place, but be sure to gently push the fins into the sand or gravel.
I have a wave maker in my tank that creates currents from two different directions every 2.5 minutes, the thermometer did not move once and hasn't since I placed it in the gravel.
The thermometer has both readings in Celsius and Fahrenheit on a white background with a "green safe zone" area in the middle. Reading temperatures is very easy, the visibility on the thermometer is very clear.
As for accuracy, I can say with confidence that the water temperature is displayed with minimal margin of error, if any, probably + or .2 degrees. I have a digital thermometer with a probe and both displayed the same temperature.
The overall construction of the thermometer is of very good quality and materials, the housing is made of glass and the fins of plastic, not sure what they used to give weight to the fins, but it works, it does sink and stays sunken.
Nowadays is hard to find good aquarium thermometers, they are either inaccurate or brake easily, this one however, even though is made in China, seems to be well built and I expect it to last. Hope this helps.Ok...the reason I like the "rocket" so much is...
1) Unlike glass hanging thermo's there is no suction cup that fails after 2 weeks or top hanging thermos which only test temp at the water surface
2) Unlike other substrate based thermos, they don't constantly spin. These have "rocket" fins which anchor it in the substrate and prevent spinning.
The thermo is otherwise no different than most other non digital type thermos. Easily readable and relatively accurate.

Stays at bottom of tank as advertised. Accurate reading, but numbers are very small so a bit difficult to read. Blue bar indicating "ideal" temperature is helpful.Read Best Reviews of JW Pet Company Smart Temp Standing Thermometer Aquarium Accessory Here
I was looking for a good thermometer for an acrylic tank. The stick-on types aren't accurate unless your tank is glass and the suction cup types just don't stay put for long. So, I chose this glass, standing model. It's an accurate thermometer that stays put at the bottom of the tank. The cory catfish appreciates that food gets stuck by the base and he cleans it away without the thermometer budging. Very happy with the performance and the kids think it looks like a rocket.

What is a thermometer supposed to do? It's supposed to measure temperature. Well, I'm sure this measures temps, but I can't tell what they are. The scale is unreadable. Mechanically this looks like a decent product, but the water temp could be 60 deg or 90 deg, and I wouldn't know without sticking my finger in the tank. It does have a green zone on the scale, but it's not clear what temp range that covers. I wouldn't buy another one or recommend this product to anyone.Saturday, April 19, 2014

Aqueon 06055 Goldfish Color Enhancing Granules, 3-Ounce
MSG is a flavor enhancer, what it does is fool the brain into perceiving that certain foods taste better than they actually would without the addition of MSG. Abundant research concludes it makes otherwise unpalatable food highly palatable.
There are plenty of examples of Asian restaurants, foods and countless products that boldly exclaim No MSG!
I had written to Hikari twice, asking why MSG was included in this particular formula, I've never received a response.
Anyway, as most of you know when reading any pet food list of ingredients, the first three are the most critical. So I recently did a comparison between the Hikari and the Aqueon slow sinking color enhancing granules.
Here's the ingredient list for Hikari:
Fish Meal, Wheat Germ Meal, Wheat Flour, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Starch, Dried Bakery Product, Soy Bean Meal, Gluten Meal, Fish Oil, Spirulina, Vegetable Oil, Astaxanthin, Dried Seaweed Meal, Dried A. niger Fermentation Extract, Monosodium Glutamate, Dl-methionine, Garlic, Dried B. subtilis Fermentation Product, Rice Bran, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (Stabilized Vitamin C), Inositol, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Vitamin A Oil, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Niacin, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K), Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Disodium Phosphate, Ferrous Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Cobalt Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, and Calcium Iodate.
Here's the ingredient list for Aqueon :
Whole Fish Meal (whole salmon, herring and other mixed fishes), Soybean Meal, Whole Wheat Flour, Corn Gluten Meal, Dried Yeast, Fish Oil, Kelp Meal, Garlic, Spirulina, Dicalcium Phosphate, Natural Astaxanthin, Choline Chloride, Calcium Propionate (a preservative), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Vitamin A Acetate, Cholecalciferol (source of Vitamin D3), Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Menadione Sodium Bisulphite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Folic Acid, Thiamine, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (B6), Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, DL-Alphatocopherol (E), Manganese Sulfate, Cobalt Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, and Copper Sulfate
Key Points
* Hiraki doesn't identify which fish the meal is made from.
This means they change sources frequently and may be using diseased, rancid fish. Be very wary regardless of any pet food that uses vague terms like "animal digest" "ocean fish" or "Meat" if it's not specific it's a problem
*Aqeon identifies the fish they use a major sign of quality in any pet food.
* There's very little "filler" in Aqeon in comparison to the Hikari formula. Another sign of good nutrition and quality.
Cost
* The Hikari retails for $17.00 for 7 ounces
* The Aqeon retails for $2.99 for 3 ounces a dramatically better formula and by far much less expensive
As a side note, no commercial food for Goldfish can replace a varied diet including fresh veggies, quality gel foods, bits of defrosted raw shrimp and so on. Aqueon is an excellent food as a staple but like any commercial food needs to be supplemented. So glad to find Aqueon Color Enhancing Granules online. These are smalll granules, not pellets. The fish seems to like these best. No tank mess. Great color enhancing!

This is a great tool to feed our two telescope goldfish (they can't see very well, and this has taught them to associate it with food. Our fancy goldfish comes right up to peck at it as soon as it goes in the water, lol!!I popped off the black end of this and can now mix their slow sinking fish granules with some tank water, suction it all up with this, and squirt towards the fish.
They love it! :) And so do I!! :)I have a deep tank and it works perfect for making sure all fish get food as well as corals and I don't overfeed.

EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge Extractor
I beat up reviews of gravel vacs for almost a week. Look, this thing cost three times the normal 2 c-batt vacs. Just buy it. The thing is awesome. The upper area you see in grey-white is 6 inches of micro mesh plastic to fill up with garbage. You just press 2 buttons to detatch it and go rinse in out. The whole thing is submergable. Also the "On" button locks in. So you don't have to hold it. I didn't give it a 5 because I feel they could have added a cross under the impeller to not allow very small stones to get up in there. I had one lodge which made me have to disconnect the section and dump it out. No biggie. Just being picky since this is a review. Uses 4 AA included (Duracell) wow. Has great suction. I press the lower section all the way in the stone and it actually sucks down to the bottom of the tank. I would have rated this 4.8. I have a 90 gallon tank and sometimes I don't want to perform a water change to get the bottom of the tank clean. I had the multi-vac previously. I have no issues with that except over time, the pieces won't stay together. I bought the sludge extractor (PETCO) and I love it. It reaches to the bottom of my tank and I didn't have to drain any water. The pressure on the vacuum was more than adequate. I was a bit relunctant on the proce, but I'm happy I did buy it and would recommend it to others. Just shop around for the lowest price.

This was the second vacuum I purchased and I hope that by reading my review you will make this your first. There aren't a million electronic vacuums on the market but almost all of them cost less than this one. That makes them VERY tempting. However, there are many things that make this worth the money:Plastic mesh filter: The cheaper ones exit into a cheap cloth bag that keeps coming loose.
Suction: This thing has GREAT suction. You can see all of the debris getting pulled up.
Easy to clean: Take off the filter and rinse it under the faucet.
Quality: This FEELS solid. The other vacuums feel cheap like they will break at any moment.
Works on larger tanks: It comes with an extension that you can use if you have a mid sized tank.
Just wanted to share a tip. It doesn't look like it, but you can remove the cap at the bottom of the mesh filter to make it easier to wash out all of the debris sucked up by the vacuum.
This is a great tool if you want to clean up a bit between water changes, or if you want to clean up during a water change but don't want to take out too much water. Highly recommend.

I just got the Sludge extractor yesterday, and immediately rip the box open and tried it out. The product comes in a few pieces and nothing was crack or broken as other reviewers has experienced. They even included batteries for the extractor. Assembly was very easy, and a push of a button gets the little pump going. I would say that the sucting power is about the same as my gravel siphon, definately not stronger and no way would it be able to suck a fish up. (I have some neon tetras in the tank) The fine screen traps the "eek" and let the water flows out. It was easy to use and easy to clean. Although for some reason, the pump would stop on it's own for no reason at all. I have no problem with the battery cover, it seems secure enough and it never pop open on it's own. This product can be improved by having stronger suction power. Otherwise, it perform as what I expected from the product description.Want EHEIM Quick Vac Pro Automatic Gravel Cleaner and Sludge Extractor Discount?
