This test is the simplest to use, of all the tests I have tried. I still use the API Freshwater test kit and find the Hagen test easier to use.

Both tests have a similar problem. If the PH is between 7.0 and 7.5 it is difficult to discern which way it is drifting.

My application, Aquaponics requires PH in the 6.5 to 6.8 range ideally, again; it is difficult to discern which way it is drifting.

I wanted to confirm the accuracy of another brand of liquid pH test kit that I currently use. The Nutrafin test kit registers one degree lower (6.6) than the other brand (7.6). Now I don't know which test kit reading is correct. I gave this 3 stars with the intent of it being a neutral rating.

Fluval Motor Seal Ring for External Filter

Pro tip when you need to get saltwater gunk out of your filter, take the O ring off of the filter before you soak it (the filter box) in vinegar the acid destroys the rubber of the O ring!

I couldn't stop my filter from leaking no doubt cause it was 8+ years old and had the original seal. I was also having problems that before it started not sealing, it would leak upon power start up after an electrical outage. Good thing I keep a plastic container underneath it cause it filled it up and almost overflowed. Now with the new seal, it doesn't leak anymore.

Tetra 26579 Cylinder Prefilter for Water Garden Pumps

This is a simple submerged pump pre-filter. I got it for my Tetra 1000 gph pond pump. It's not very big, about 7 inches long and 4.5 inches in diameter. It comes with a foam insert already, you won't need to buy one.

What's in the kit:

1 plastic pre-filter (cylinder)

1 foam core (coarse)

1 4" long 1" diameter hose

1 3/4" tube fitting

1 1" tube fitting

1 1.25" tube fitting (fits my pump but doesn't fit this filter!)

Using the fittings and the hose you attach the pre-filter to the pump. The pump draws the water in through this pre-filter and basically works as a coarse filter to catch large pieces of junk in the pond from fouling up the impeller in the pump motor. I've used other filters like this before and you'll need to remove the foam insert at least once a week to clean it out with a jet of water from the hose. If you don't, the water intake will be slowed down considerably and that could damage the pump.

The surface area of the filter material isn't great so I'd only recommend using this for smaller ponds (maybe 500 gallons or so) but so far it works great. With the warming of the weather there has been a lot of new algae growth in the water and over night this filter pretty much cleared the pond of the stuff.

One problem with this filter is that the fittings don't really fit like they're supposed to. The outlet of this filter is 1 inch and the inlet of my Tetra pump (which it is supposed to work with) is 1.25 inches, so you'll need to buy some adapters and hose clamps from the hardware store. I also attached a handle to the filter opening so that it will be easy to open and take the filter to be washed. Overall, once you've got the adapter this filter works great, and it's a really great price as well.

Update: I had to go to the hardware store to find step up and down adapters because the filters and the pump had different size hoses but I've found that Laguna sells hose fittings and adapters that make connections between different sized hoses a snap. Just follow the links below:

3 week update: So far this filter has worked extremely well. It's very easy to clean, I just pull it up with a hook and take the foam out and rinse off. In 3 days (at the most) it filtered out all the suspended stuff that was in my pond and the water is crystal clear now. On further reading the instruction manual (which Tetra should put on it's website as a pdf file) I've found that you can serially attach 2 of these filters end to end to make a longer filter, and at the current extremely discounted price, there is no reason not to!

Pros:

1) Price, price, price!

2) Modular system.

3) Very easy to maintain.

4) Works very well so far.

5) I've read that Tetra has good customer service, hope I won't have to use them. They even have an 800 number listed on the box.

Cons:

Needed to get adapters for the hose because intake and outlets not fitting with other Tetra products it was supposed to, but not a big deal now that it's done.

1 year update:

I went totally overboard with this and now have 4 of these pre-filters. I attached them 2 on each side of the pump with a Y-connector. It clears up all the debris and algae in the water so my water is crystal clear. And because I have 4 of them, I don't need to clean them every week. I have them in series so when the first one is gunked up, the next one will take over. Totally rocks!

Easy to clean, works well in my 150 gal garden pond, my goldfish are thriving in FL! Item arrived promptly, easy to install.

I was concerned when I tested my aquarium water and found that the ammonia wasn't 0.0 even though I have been consistent in doing weekly water changes. Just on a hunch, I went ahead and tested the water from my faucet. This is when I found out that my public water had ammonia in it. These are great. I feed them to my snail. The Betta's food is high protein and he doesn't leave much. These give my snail what it needs. The wafers are about the diameter of a dime but thicker. They sink to the bottom and eventually dissolve leaving no residue and without clouding the water. They couldn't work better for me. Don't be fooled by the package size or weight. There are a lot of the wafers in this little bag and it has a press lock top seam to keep them fresh. It's a bargain.

These wafers work wonderfully with my pleco and ottocinclus. They last really long in an opened or sealed bag. I will keep buying these wafers!

I've got two tanks: the 37 gal has two good sized Chinese algae eaters, two Yo-Yo loaches and a large Rainbow shark. They all love this food. The other tank has five Cory cats and a big Pleco. algae eater like the one on the package. They eagerly go after these wafers. They do float for a bit sometimes, but you can eliminate that by just plopping the pieces into the water with a little force -and they sink. (They need to absorb a small amount of water, and then they fall right to the bottom). I got these as an "add on" when I spotted them listed and am glad for it. Tetra has been making good stuff for a very long time and this is right in line. Recommended for your catfish type critters.

Fish Mate F14 Aquarium Fish Feeder

I have owned one of these units for over two years and use it to dispense food when I am away for short periods. The primary advantage of this unit over others that I own ie Eheim, Aquachef and Rena is the ability to dispense the precise amount of food you desire and even alternate the type of food between feedings.

Filling the small compartments was somewhat problematic until I began using a 1/8 tps measure for that purpose.

Care must be taken to ensure that the food compartment unit is positioned right side up. Failure to do so results in no food being dispensed.

The only one I have seen that allows you to vary the amount for each day (e.g. you can put more in the feeder for the weekend but still have a "base" feeding amount during the week). Also, the only feeder I have that reliably delivers the chosen amount on the day chosen.

One problem with other (horizontal-axis rotating) feeders I have found is that the ones I tried did not reliably deliver the chosen amount; large flakes would block delivery altogether or at least reduce it, while small flakes would lead to excessive amounts of feed, unlike the Fishmate F14.

After about a year, the rotating part on the Fishmate F14 would sometimes get stuck, which is why I am awarding only 4 stars. Still, if you want the features mentioned above, it's the only game in town that I have seen (so far).

I spent over a week mulling over which feeder to buy. Most of them out there don't deal with pellet food well at all based on the reviews. This feeder came with some caveats based on the reviews too. But knowing what I got into made everything easy and I have to admit that this was the best purchase for my BETA fish (2 beta fish in 2 separate tanks with 2 of these feeders). The caveat that made me worry was that each compartment, when rotating, had a small ridge where all the food didn't go in, or in the case of 1 BETA fish and only 3 pellets, none of it would go in. HOWEVER, it consistently rotates to this same spot (and this was not mentioned). Therefore, when I set up the feeder, I already prepared for the fact that the feeder would essentially miss the first meal. I, therefore, fed them manually when it was first set up. After that first time, both my tanks with only 1 fish in each tank, have been operating automatically flawlessly! The easy of access to fill the individual feeding compartments was a BONUS that I didn't expect nor read about. When there is only 3 compartments left (out of the 14) with food, I go in and easily drop 3-4 pellets in the empty ones, so there is no interruption. I plan on going away for 2 weeks and I will set it to rotate just once a day with 8 pellets in each compartment in that scenario. I expect things will run smoothly.

I full endorse this product for BETA fish with pellet food since it worked well with me.

I needed an autofeeder because I was going to be gone for close to two weeks. I bought this particular feeder because it gave me the ability to feed different types of foods to my fish while I was gone, rather than one big drum of flakes. It also gave me the ability to occasionally drop a shrimp pellet or algae wafer in the tank for my cleanup crew.

Some patience is required when putting food in this feeder. The sections are small, so it's easy to get food into another compartment or elsewhere on/around the feeder.

I used the air tube attachment to make sure no moisture got in the feeder, which seemed to work well. Granted, I don't know if the food would have been just as dry if I didn't hook the air pump up to it, but decided not to take a chance.

I couldn't find a good way to use the bracket that came with the feeder with my setup, which included a glass aquarium top. I have two female bettas in my tank (it's the males that will fight to the death), so I was reluctant to completely remove the glass top while I was gone. I also didn't want excessive evaporation of my tank water over a two week period. I was able to put my feeder on top of my light (Marineland LED) and remove a plastic filler part of my hood so the food could drop in the tank.

Overall, this product worked very well in my absence.

This is my first automatic feeder. I've been using it continuously for ten months without any problems. When I go out of town, I have no worries about my fish.

The good:

it has worked reliably for me

it holds weeks worth of flakes

I haven't had problems with moisture, even without using the air input

adjustable feeding quantity

1 to 3 feedings/day

low battery warning

batteries lasted me 10 months with 3 feedings/day

The bad:

programming interface is poor. The 24-hour clock starts *at the time you set it up*, which means if you want the first feeding at 7am you have to wait until 7am to program it.

I can't program it without the manual. It's not simple enough to figure out, and there isn't an instruction plate on the unit. Now that I have to change the batteries, I have to go digging for the manual.

the program is inflexible. There is no way to pause the program, or to make the unit do a one-time extra feeding. The multiple-feeding/day interval is unchangeable (12 hours for 2x, 6 hours for 3x).

bulky with limited mounting options. The unit has to sit on top of your tank, with the feeder output over an opening. The base of the unit (the black part in the picture) is about 4.5", with the feeding slot (clear plastic part) extending past the base with a 1" wide opening.

I had to experiment over a few feedings to find a position that would get all the food into the water. I put velcro strips on the base and attached it to a heavy drink coaster with a felt bottom. It doesn't move around and won't scratch my acrylic top.

Despite the inflexibility, I'm happy with this thing because I really have no worries when I'm on vacation.

Have had the product for a few months now. It is working and seems to be reliable. Only wish you could program it by entering a time into the feeder. You have to set it at the time you want to feed the fish and then it just counts the hours until the next feeding...once a day, twice a day etc. The amount you feed depends on how wide you open the hopper. Make sure you have enough food in the feeder since it works off of gravity and the rotating hopper to drop the food into your tank.

My husband has a 55 gallon for mollies and I have a 5 gallon for a Betta. He did not want to use the automatic feeder that I recently purchased and told me to buy the tetra vacation gel for the 55 gallon. I decided to set up the auto feeder for Betta and my husband dropped the Tetra Gel in the Molly tank. We left for 4 days and when we returned the water in the auto feeder was not cloudy, Betta alive and happy while the 55 gallon tank, the water was cloudy, the mollies did not look well and I found alot of the Tetra gel residue. I purchased my feeder else where cheaper, and can say it was worth the purchase. However, there are some cons I would like to point out.

Cons:

1) Cannot set a designated time;

2) Container bit small for supposedly 1 months feeding; guess if you feed once a day it will last a month; and

3) No clamp to support to fish tank only a couple of velcro strips

I was kinda worried about how well it would work, since I bought it here on Amazon and the reviews made it look kinda sketchy, but I've owned it for nearly half a year now and I have not once had a single problem with it. I did notice though that if you place it over the surface where the bubbles from your air stone come up, the inside of the feeder does get a bit of condensation causing the food to clump a little and for it to shut down. But as I found out after doing a little bit of research, that is expected of ANY feeder, and the condensation will usually KILL it as well, so I guess this feeder is a toughy.

First of all, setting up this feeder is the simplest thing ever. There is only one button, which pressed repeatedly, allows to select 1, 2 or 3 meals/day that have been preprogrammed at the most logical time interval of each other (that is 24h, 8h, and 6 hours, respectively). The first meal is repeated at same hour each day, which coincides with the time you set the feeder. It's up to you to decide when you want to feed your fishes the first meal each day. I don't see any problem with that, unlike many other people before me did.

The canister that holds the food is a lot bigger than you can see in the picture, most of it being hidden in the main body of the feeder. It probably can hold same amount as one of the Tetra 29 g (1.02oz) of flake food. That's (a lot) more than a month worth of food for my fishes, so no worries here. The amount of food that is dispensed at each time can be adjusted and if the amount of food still doesn't seem to be sufficient for the number of fishes you may have, I would suggest to try more frequent meals, I mean more than 1 or 2. 3 meals a day is a little too much from my experience, while 1 is not quite enough. 2 meals a day should be ideal I'd say. Another option would be buying some feeder that is double in price or even buying 2 feeders and put them to run in the same time. I guess you have to be inventive, but for any normal amateur aquarist this type of feeder is ideal and meets their needs.

The mounting is done the most natural by placing the feeder on the hood of your aquarium, and nothing else being necessary to keep it in place, although 2 velcro strips are provided. No clamp is provided but I believe that is obvious from the image. If, for any reason you can only mount the feeder by using a clamp, the alternative is to get a cheap clamp from a Dollar store but my tanks need cover anyway or else the fishes will jump out.

I even like that there is the option to connect it to the air pump so clumping is prevented. I don't know if that would happen otherwise, but I decided to use the air as well. The pressure isn't high enough to see flakes flying , but the producer made sure that the air supply is cut in the time of feeding to prevent an overdose. That being said, I believe this feeder to be very good for what it is intended, and paying more would only matter for bragging rights, not performance.

There is an update I'd like to add to what I have previously stated. After some time using two of these feeders, I have noticed that the small plastic clips that keep the canister in the body of the feeder have a very good chance to break. So you have to be careful when inserting or taking out the canister for a refill and also make sure you buy a good, intact unit. I am however considering different remedies, since plastic clips aren't going to set me back now. On a market invaded by cheaply made chinese products this isn't a surprise or is it (this product is actually Italian)?

Dog Mate Medium Dog Door Brown

We purchased this for our large cat, who did not quite fit through a standard size cat flap. The only thing we didn't like about this flap were the plastic space-fillers that were included to fill in gaps between the door and the cat flap itself. These are necessary depending on the width of the door you are installing the flap on. Although they would have worked, we chose to actually cut small pieces of plywood and use those instead. Overall, I would recommend this product. It is quiet and easy for pets to use.

This was hard to install and I thought it would be easier for my little dogs to open based on reviews, but it wasn't. This had to accommodate both a big dog and two little ones. Don't know if any other door would be better, but this one my little guys can't use. The big guy does fine with it. I also don't like the way it closes. It's a flimsy plastic closure and hard to close well.

It comes in many pieces and requires a fair amount of cutting of bolts and plastics to accommodate your door. Worst of all once assembled the product quickly fades and falls apart.

First, you should get a RODI system if you have a reef tank instead of using this with tap water.

However, if you really have to use tap water with a FOWLR tank, I would rather use Seachem Prime. Prime also detoxifies heavy metals and nitrites. A small bottle can be used for a long time.

It's nice to have a bottle as an emergency solution. Let's say you have a dead fish in the tank for a day or two which you didn't notice. You have an Ammonia spike or a nitrite spike. You can just use a little of this or Prime every few hours and you ll remove all the Ammonia or nitrite in the tank. It buys you time so that you can do a few smaller partial water change which is less likely to shock your livestocks.

The product itself is very good and safe for shrimp in both fresh and salt water. I had also called the company to ask a question and the customer service was outstanding. I am so pleased that I will not be using any other products from now on.

This little pump packs a punch i had about 4 regular aquarium air pump pumping air in the same tank and this commercial pump outperforms them by far,it saves space if u have multiple air stones its perfect and is very quiet...i would recommend this to anyone looking to buy an air pump....

The first thing I noticed is that it is smaller that I was especting, good! Later I started measuring air output and obtained 4 points, with all closed outputs I obtained a maximum pressure of 115 mmHg, at 9 liters per minute I measured 70 mmHg, with 12.2 liters per minute I found 60 mmHg and as last point at 14.8 liters per minute I had 50 mmHg, once I put these 4 points in a chart I get a nice straight line that intercepts 26 liters per minute at zero pressure, so of 45 liters per minute announced I only get a measured 26.

I put it to work and replaced 6 small pumps, with about 16 outputs (filters without stone) that left me with 55 mmHg working pressure and 13.5 liters per minute as my chart indicates.

I hope that it would last more than a year, I did not find this pump very noisy but it is noisier than any of the small air pumps it replaced.

As rule of thumb I found that liters of air per minute that can obtain by any air pump it is more or less half of announced in specifications.

As reference 100 mmHg are about 53 1/2 inches of water.

i have got a few of these pumps for my aquaponics systems. it moves alot of LPM and if you have a waterfall, you probably wont hear the pump.

After going through so many pumps for my tank, I saw this at amazon at a good price and decided to try it. The item is a GREAT pump, solid, heavy, complete. Rubber feet, connectors, everything you need. The only problem I have is my tank is in my living room and the noise from this pump is just too much for me. I am looking into running it behind a small wall, running the tube through, but haven't tried that yet. Oh, and this is a LOT of air. I just have two long stones under the gravel and this is way much air. You probably have to use three or 4 of the outlets (at least) to reduce the air flow rate to something usable.

I received this Air pump in a timely fashion, well packaged and intact.

The pump certainly puts out the rated air, however, it is "Noisy" to a fault.

I've tried the Princess and a pea solution, with inserting multiple padding underneath as a vibration mount, and still the drone of the pump is inescapable. I value my neighbors peace of mind, and the last thing they need is to hear the 24/7 drone of this pump, if I can hear it from inside my home, so can they.

I'll have to build a sound box to contain the noise that will allow for cooling and enough air to supply the pump.

Would have been wiser to just purchase a more expensive, but "proven" quieter pump.

So if noise is not an issue, this pump is a deal.....

However, If noise is an issue, spend your money elsewhere.

I love the design and the concept. The colors in the image on your screen will be identical to the colors on your aquarium background when it arrives, very saturated for a nice effect.

Furthermore, the item arrived promptly.

That said, the resolution of the image is CRAP. I have to be honest. When I look through my fish tank, I can see the poor resolution quality just as I could when I was holding the background up in person and looking at it. Furthermore, the background arrived rolled up, and the roll was crinkled! Fortunately, I was cutting a small piece of this background out as I have a small fish tank, but nonetheless, if I were using the background to its full capacity I would have been angry. True, it likely wasn't sent by the manufacturer crumpled up, but the fact that it likely got damaged during shipping tells me that the seller needs to package it better.

I LOVE the design. I LOVE the shipping speed. But the image quality and the fact that the background arrived crinkled makes this an unacceptable buy for nineteen bucks. I'd pay no more than 8 dollars--or less than half of what I just paid--for it if I were to buy again.

This looks much better on the aquarium than even in the picture. Mine did arrive bent as if the box was crushed. I layed it out for a week to straighten (so it lost a star) before adhering it to the tank. I cut it down to fit a 20 gallon tank and used the oil sparingly on the cling. It took about an hour to get all the bubbles out with a kithchen spatula but the effect is worth it.

UPDATE

After 6 months this won't stay on the tank no matter what I do, edges curl and air pockets streak the background. I would not buy this again.

The resolution of the image is poor (aka blurry) but isn't a problem when seen from a distance. The image is very dark! You cannot see the details of the ruins or jungle plants like the in example photo. This image is nearly all black with some brown and gold accents such as the sun or reflecting water in the image. The size of this was wrong for my tank (40gallon.) It ended up being too tall, but not long enough. I used black paper to create a border to hide where the image was short on either side. I'm thinking of adding the ornaments since they might hide the exposed edges but since I'm not using this tank for fish...I'm not sure. Overall I really like the idea of these fantasy scenes since they are very different than all the other backgrounds which are rather dull. Needs to come in more sizes for larger tanks! Neat idea but certainly needs some work. I like this and my Tortoises seem to like the change. Didn't use the gel, just used tape. If this image was lighter so you could see all the details I would give this 5 stars for coolness, but you can hardly see the plants or anything.

U.P. Aqua Cichlid Stone (medium)

I bought the small and medium size for my 15 gallon column cichlid tank. I rinsed them and put them in and the fish love them.

I think this is a very nice Cichlid stone although from the picture, it appeared there was only one hole in the stone. The one I received has a hole in both the back and front and although the Cichlids seem to enjoy it, it does not offer the smaller Cichlids the protection they would like as another Cichlid can chase them out of the stone from the other end. I would have liked to have known the stone had two holes. I would also like to know the actual size of the stone because I felt this stone was on the smaller size yet it was labeled medium in the advertisement. The larger Cichlids that are in the tank are not able to get into the stone.

My Apisto. female loooves it. She's taken residence I wish it were a little darker in color. As algae grows, it has gotten a bit easier to hide in the aquascape.

I got this for my son's 15 gallon tank. The gel worked like a charm. Made the background pop. My son was extremely happy with it. It looked like Hogwarts, and he loved the Harry Potter series. I put in a dragon decor for one side, with some gnarly looking live plants behind it to simulate the Forbidden Forest from the book. And I added boats on the other side and some actual castle decors and a hut for Hagrid's Hut. He LOVES his fish tank. :)

It was definitely easy to put on and it looks fantastic. I used black rocks for the base and placed a couple of small castles to complete the look.

As a BIG Harry Potter fan I had to get this.

I wasn't so sure about how to apply the gel and I wish there had been some instructions but I just looked it up on youtube and it was easy enough to follow.

The background says it fits up to a 29 gallon tank, I have it on a 50 gallon and it fits great with only an inch and a half uncovered on each side which is no big deal as that's where my heater is on one side and filter is on the other.

The gel definitely makes a difference! The image is very vibrant!

I'd definitely get another background from here!
