YML Aquarium Net Breeder, Small

This is just what I needed for my balloon molly ~ but it did not come with instrucions. The suction cups are great ~ they allow me to close the aquarium lid completely as opposed to net breeders that hang off the side of the aquarium. However, there were no assembly instructions provided, and I broke one of the plastic dowels trying to assemble this. Hint: the net goes on the OUTSIDE of the plastic frame you assemble.

It came with no instructions. The suction cups are not designed for the product. They are the type that go into a hole and the unit has no holes. It does have four pins, but then they would require the hole to be in the suction cup. There is no way to attach this thing to the side of the tank.

cons:

not a lot of filter area, if you have many fish this will clog often and quickly, needing frequent cleanings/changing

the filter media is flimsy, making it a bit more difficult to put in the filter than other models, and probably limiting the number of times you can wash it before having to replace the media cartridge.

not silent its not quite as loud as the bubblers (which really arn't loud either), but it hums a bit. in a silent room you will notice, if there is background noise already it wont be a big deal.

I really like this filter. It meets all my needs as far as adjustable flow rate, compact size and color (completely transparent). It is very quiet and seems reliable.

The only issue I have with it is the connection between the intake extension tube and the intake assembly. The intake extension slips over the intake assy and this fit is made water-tight with a o-ring seated in a groove on the end of the intake assy. Upon first assembly, the o-ring snapped, allowing water to enter the intake at this connection and rendering the extension useless. I simply fixed the issue with some clear silicone sealant, but I felt it worth noting here.

I'd buy it again, I'd just be extremely careful with that tiny little o-ring.

I replaced a smaller HOB power filter with the Rapids Power filter in my 3 gal Betta tank. The the motor unit is set down inside the sealed, plastic filter body, not twisted in from the bottom so there's no o-ring to kink or leak. I dropped using the OEM filter cartridges for a custom cut (with scissors) multi-chemical asorbant mat that turns brown when exhausted (Poly Bio something or other). This filter has a clear body so it's easy to check on the pad's status. I liked the way the Rapids Power filter performed so well that I bought two others for future use!

GEOsystem Mopani Driftwood Ornamental Root

I keep a 20 gallon natural style tank and this was the perfect addition. I would suggest that you soak it for a good while or you will be stuck with a tea colored tank for a little while. The water staining has gone away after a few water changes.

I love this driftwood. I got it yesterday, put it in the tank. It sunk immediately and didn't stain my water. I didn't have any prep beforehand like with other driftwood. The two-toned coloring is very appealing to the eye. The small piece is great for a 10 gallon tank and would be a focal piece for a smaller tank. I will be buying larger pieces for my 55 gallon. The price is great and this is truly a trouble free piece of driftwood.

EDIT: One year later.... I have a fuzz growing on the wood that everyone says is normal and will go away in a week or two except it hasn't gone away in a whole year! Its still a great piece of wood but I suggest boiling yours before adding it to your tank.

This Mopani wood is very beautiful. Please know that it is nothing like the picture... do you really expect them to mold a fake wood? No. You wouldn't be paying $10 for it then. So appreciate that each piece of wood is unique and natural. It will sink straight to the bottom when you get it, but I HIGHLY suggest boiling it for about an hour OR soaking it in hot water for 24 hours (changing the water every so often). Boiling or soaking the wood will help avoid your water turning your tank water a brownish color from the tannins in the wood. While the brown color does not bother your fish, it is not as pleasant to look at.

If you have Mopani wood and you are noticing a discoloration in your tank I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest purchasing Seachem Purigen 100ml it works some serious wonders! I put it in my tank it the tank was crystal clear within 24 hours!

This stuff is great. Iv used it to cycle my 55, 20 and 36 gallon fish tanks. It takes a few days to cycle it.

I suggest you put this stuff onto your filter pad. I put it on the bottom of the foam and carbon inserts on the aquaclear filters. Putting it on the bottom will cause bacteria to grow a lot easier.

Also this is a water conditioner so when adding new water you can add this stuff to the tank and it will take care of chlorine and metals in the water.

This stuff will float around in your tank until your filter pushes it under, but if you soak it in a cup it will sink immediately, which I recommend doing.

Upon buying this I was under the impression that it was for saltwater and freshwater so I was disappointed when it came in and was only for freshwater (my mistake). As for actually making a difference in my tanks I would have no clue. My saltwater tank cycled in one week and one day so I would say that it must have done something right.

I'm not sure if this product actually works or not as far as helping to establish your beneficial bacterial colony. The "bacteria" is mixed in with bran flakes and floats around on the water surface. Really messy in a small aquarium. Might be okay for a pond or outside water garden with fish.

I've reviewed few things on here and it's usually good, but I feel as if I should warn you about this product...

I set up my freshwater, planted tank a few weeks ago. I decided to splurge on a Fluval 306 canister filer, which is INCREDIBLY quitet compared to my old HOB filter. Who doesn't want to speed-up the bio process? Not I!! So, I went to my LFS (no, I didn't buy it from a vendor or site), BUT...my happy (non-fish) tank water went from clear, to having some sort of white scum on the surface after adding this product. I had followed the directions and thought to myself that it'll clear up in a day or two.

Nope! It stayed and stayed and stayed. Hmm... a week into my trying to "pre" cycle my tank was meeting with misery, so I figured I'd throw a few Otos in (I always start my tanks with cleaners) to add some ammonia to the mix and get everything in order. The beneficial bacteria doesn't really take root till they have some sh*t (ammonia)to feed on. No change...

So, after doing extensive reading and research, I found out that this is something seen with a mass influx of proteins and lack of surface agitation. Long story short, I adjusted the outflow nozzle to stir up the surface water and...WOW!!! It sucks, but my tank looks like I just churned up the "mulm" from the gravel after months of not cleaning it. I'm psyched watching the intake suck up the crap that's been sitting up top get sucked into my tank's intake!

45 minutes later, the surface water in my tank of clean. One of my Otos looked at me and winked, so I know it's all good under da' hood.

Got this about a month or 2 ago for my 3 gallon freshwater nano and all the plants are doing great. I throw it on for 12 hrs (8a-8p) and all is good. I had an LED light on previously and this thing kicks butt. The only downside is the coverage it's too much! I have it on top of a bookshelf and it pretty much lights my entire room up. LED does put out an amazing shimmer effect though, that I kind of miss. Wish there was an inexpensive freshwater LED nano light available. Also, keep a replacement bulb on hand.

The light was the exact size and watts I was looking for but I ended up buying the 50/50 replacement bulb for it and the set up is perfect!

Excellent light source for small tanks. One major problem is bulb replacement.I wanted a smaller wattage bulb instead of the supplied 13w.Couldn't use a Phillips 9w because bulb and reflector are one piece on the Perch-light. Can't replace just the bulb! Tom web site is impossible to order from when I went to find a 9w bulb with reflector.

I love what this product looks like, the color of the light, and the soothing waterfall. The negatives I have found is that the waterfall pushes my male beta on his side when he swims close to it. Therefore, he hides behinds the filter a lot and I don't see him much. It would be nice if the flow strength of the filter had a switch so the flow strength could be changed like other filters I have owned.

This is one of the rare occasions when I review a project I havent bought. First let me start off by saying you can only put ONE, not TWO glofish in here. Second I find this REALLY expensive. You could by a glass bowl and say 30 bucks. With glofish you will need a heater and filter. That would be a huge hassle. They wont fit and this means more of your money wasted. If you want a glofish tank invest in a good big tank. The ironic thing is bigger tanks are easier to maintain.If you want two glofish you should get a three of four sized gallon tank. I would only get this if you are willing to spoil your betta like most people do.

As long as the electric part still works (if it vibrates) this kit contains everything needed to fully restore your pump. The only thing you will need is some nail polish or thread-lock or Elmer's glue to apply over the internal machine screws afterward to keep them from vibrating free over time. I use the 1 Plus filter in a small tank with 3 small-to-medium turtles in it. While the filter is incredibly easy to clean, it requires cleaning about three times as often as the other filters I've used, making it about even with other filter options.

As a replacement insert, it can't get much easier pop out the old and put in the new. It is also a fairly easy sponge to clean, even when really mucky, but the sponge gets less effective dramatically quicker than other filter foam. With one critter or several clean ones, this won't be a big deal, but multiple critters will make this otherwise-great filter average.

These are great filters considering how small these are they work quite well. They can be rinsed and used over and over again (rinse with water that has been declorinated and no ammonia) and it acts also as a BIO filter!

Fish & Aquatic Supplies Maxi Jet 1200 Pro (295/1300 Gph)

I've used the MaxiJet powerheads for years. They don't clog quickly, they're easy to clean and they run continuously without problem. I recently bought 2 new MaxiJet Pro 1200's for my 125 gallon tank. They push water like I wanted and have been running strong without fail...except for one major issue. The suction cups on the new models are horrible! Both of the new ones come loose every couple of days. If I'm not paying attention, they fall off the glass and blow my sand all over the place. My older models hang tight forever, I'm not sure what's wrong with these new cups. I know there are conversion kits out there to get magnets on them, but it's disappointing to have to do that.

The Maxi-jet pro's have been a rock solid powerhead line up for years.

It works great in the classic setup, but while it does push a lot of water in the prop set up it is super loud.

Finnex Temperature Controller Digital Heater

After years of submersible heaters with internal thermostats fail on me (multiple brands), I decided to spend the extra money to go with a heater controller and a titanium heater. Bottom line, it is worth the money to have a separate controller. I have tried the Jalli and the Finnex Digital contorllers and would recommend both. The advantage of the Finnex HC-810M is that it not only maintains the temperature to your set point but also displays the actual temperature and allows you to set high and low temperature alarm points. My first thought on the alarm points was that it made sense for the low point in case your heater failed but thought that a high alarm really didn't make much sense because the controller shouldn't allow the heater to heat up to that point unless the controller wasn't working. I later found out that the high alarm was helpful because I had a pump that started to heat the water up to the high limit. The heater wasn't on because the controller was working perfectly and the controller told me that there was a problem. Another thing to note, if you have had the same problems I've had with the regular submersible heaters, you don't have to throw away the heaters that are stuck on. You can use the heater controller with any heater as long as it doesn't exceed the rated wattage. If it has a thermostat of its own and you prefer to use the controller, just set the heater to the max temp. The only thing I would like for an improvement would be to have memory for the setpoints since you have to reset everything if you ever have a power outage or unplug it.

UPDATE: Apparently they did add memory for setpoints now.

This product works very well. The set up instructions seemed very unclear to me. I finally managed to set the temperature I wanted but could not get the hi and lo settings figured out. The one glaring problem with this controller is the temp probe is about 3 ft too short. Why they skimped on this I don't know. I have another heater with remote controller and the sensor probe wire is 3 to 4 ft long. Then you can remote mount the controller away from the tank. The Finnex controller is so short you have to put the probe near the top of your tank and then the controller barely makes it to the bottom tank line. This is on a small 50 gal tank too. Ridiculous in my opinion.

I was afraid of it sucking up my smaller fish, but it is not powerful enough to do this, however if I had, it has an in line basket so any larger particles do not pass through into the waste water. You would not believe how much "crud" settles into the bottom with the stones in your tank. The uptake head is oval in shape instead of round, so you cover twice the area in the same amount of time as the round one.

The siphon "pump" built inline works like a champ! Just a couple or 3 pumps and you've got siphon!!!

If you decide to purchase this, just be aware that when you are finished with each use, you need to take it apart and clean it, especially that in line filter basket of any large matter (like dead plant matter) do not let it sit uncleaned between uses as you may find that it will stink. It probably explains this in the directions, but with such a simple-use item, who bothers to read instructions??? (my bad)

For an item that did not cost me very much money, it is one of the most AMAZING things I've ever bought. As a tank vacuum it works beautifully. Need to do a water exchange on your tank? Just a couple squeezes and you can quickly siphon out however much water that you want. Totally cleaning your tank out? This siphon will get all but about a half tablespoon of the water out. Take a wash cloth, wipe out your tank, and your done! Literally in only a couple of minutes (for 10 gallon tank) from start to finish. I could not be happier. I recommend it to all fish enthusiasts. One thing I do have that makes it even easier is a plastic 6-gallon water jug; I put the hose in it, fill it to where it's still easy for me to carry, and dump it.

I'm really surprised that large chain stores don't carry this product. This is the best housing solution for Syrian hamsters we've found in years of looking. Combine this with a $10 glass aquarium and its the cheapest as well. Plastic "...trail" products are not durable, are a pain to assemble and hard to keep clean. Metal cages are durable but expensive and not as flexible. What we've done is combine Crittertrail parts with the platforms that come with this kit to get the same effect as a larger all-plastic cage. As for those who complain that the shelving gets chewed...um, duh...thats how these little guys explore their surroundings and that also tells me you aren't offering them an alternative to help wear down their incisors. Cleaning this setup is a snap, the cover comes off in one piece--along with any attached shelves & parts--giving you easy access to litter for changing. Housing potential mates next to each other allows Syrians to interact a bit without sharing the same cage--preventing fights b/w incompatible suitors. The biggest drawback to this product is the tendency for Syrians to "pitch-their-poop" if their on the second floor--but training them to use a corner box in the aquarium can minimize "collateral damage." Finally, rodent urine will eventually lead to rusting of just about any cage, but repaint & seal with quality non-toxic spray paints and you're good to go.

Great idea, but the plastic in the ramps and platforms isn't going to last much longer with my gerbils...they have chewed completely through one ramp and one platform. This would be a much better product if the ramps and platforms were made of a different (harder) material, or of wood. (The wood to give the gerbils something HEALTHY to chew on) Would be better if it came with an extra set of ramps and platforms until then.

I bought two of these for my kids hamsters and the one hamster does great climbing and doing everything the cage is for. The other hamster fell off the top when she started sliding and refused to go up again so now the cage is in the basement.

Its also not as easy to get to your hamster since if she is in the tank you can't just open the top and reach in unless you have super long arms so you must remove the entire top which for a kid can be tough. I worry that they will not hook it right and it will get knocked off and the cats will have lunch.

Often the hamster food ends up all over the place too since its set in the top part and if you are not completly steady it spills.

I would have given it 5 stars but my gerbils chewed the house up within a week or two and now after a couple of months they no longer have ramps. Currently, they're working on chewing up the shelves.

So I'm off to buy one that's entirely wire. Wish I had done that in the first place!

We have 3 rats, one naked rat, one albino white rat, and one dumbo rat. They were originally in a huge ferret cage until they all discovered how to squeeze through the bars. This thing is perfect, and I was surprised at how much stuff comes with it! The ramps are a great touch, and this morning when I woke up, they were all huddled up in the nice blue hut. The only thing I dislike is the bottle of water that comes with it, it's terribly small, and it's a pain to reach in there and pull the thing out all the time, so I just put the old bottle we originally had in there for them.

My favorite feature is that the bowl of food kind of locks into the top ramp, so they can't fill it with bedding and all sorts of yuck.

It took awhile to get here, but I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has small critters that need some more space. I will try to post a video here soon, but I see that another user already did that (which is what made me buy this).

Conclusion: FOR THE $25 dollars, this is a whole lot of stuff, and effectively doubles the size of your 10 gallon tank, easy setup, i just looked at the box and snapped everything together.

I have an old SunPac compact flourecent lighting fixture that I used for years on a 46 gallon heavily planted tank. It wasn't until I purchased and setup a new 50 gallon acrylic tank that I was reluctant to lay my 90 watt compact flourecent lighting fixture on top of the acrylic so I looked into the TrueLumen which is also manufactured by SunPac. I have a freshwater partially planted tank and wanted a lighting affect that wasn't just a brighter-then-bright-blinding-white so I chose the combination blue/white strip that was recommended for marine tanks however this exceptional LED fixture is keeping my few real plants thriving! I'm so pleased with the lovely cool color this fixure puts out. I'm also soooo pleased that the LED fixture only consumes 23 watts! These things are also water proof!!! I'm planning on purchasing another one of these LED's soon. I highly recommend this product, you won't be disappointed. Oh the only complaint I have is the power line comes out of the strip in the very back of the strip instead of the side of the strip so if you have a canopy hood with little wiggle room you may need to carve out a little room to accomodate the power line or else it may wear away and expose the wires over time if you find yourself with a really tight fit. Mine has held up just fine so far but I sometimes wonder if it might stop working one day.
