Ended up with a lot of sand in the drain bucket even with both flow restricters. Was able to use some of the parts to cobble together something useful.

It's basically a gravel vac with some restrictions intended to make it useful for sand.

Fluval Shrimp Stratum

Pretty good stuff for shrimp tank. I use it on all my shrimps tanks. This stuff make keeping CRS, OEBT and, Cherry very easy. A bit light but settle well and don't cloud the water. It keep the PH low and gorw plant just fine.

Update:

09/29/11 Somehow the survival rate of the CRS and OEBT shrimplets are very low. Severial berries but only 3 babies survies so far. They are in 2 difference tank. Neocaridina (cherry veriaties) breeds like roaches. I changes out the products both tank with Akadama soils, and crushed bricks. Will update if it make any difference. But so it's not that impressive with Caridina.

Update:

10/11/11 The rest of my OEBT hatched fine in crush brick and serveral Crystal shrimplets are swimming around on Akadama. Conclusion: in my experience, I would only use this stuff for Neo. Don't waste your money if you are into a more expensive shrimps. This stuff is not good for survival rate.

From my experiance Stratum takes my pH down by .2 which no ammonia leaching. Keeps my shrimp and wallet happy!

I've had very good luck with this substrate. I was a bit worried, because others have mentioned problems such as difficulty planting with it and breakdown over time. I've had good experiences on both fronts--I planted my 2nd tank with FSS with dwarf hairgrass, and I thought it would be a royal pain to slip in all the individual nodes. In the end it was a compete non-issue, and the hairgrass actually rooted more quickly and solidly than in Eco complete (which I have in another tank). The only item I had trouble planting was a heavy stem plant--for those, you'll want to weight or temporarily cover with a rock, etc. until they root.

Shrimp seem to thrive in tanks with FSS, although I have noticed a fairly severe pH buffering effect for the first few weeks, so be careful or you can have some die off. This seems to fade over time so if you need big buffering you will have to augment or look elsewhere. Once established, shrimp breed like rabbits (I have RCS and Blueberry Shrimp), and seem to enjoy themselves. I've had no real soil breakdown to speak of in about 8 months, but I will keep watch on it. No need to wash this beforehand, by the way; in fact, there are nice small granules n there you'll probably lose if you wash it. I had no problems with dirtying up the water at all, if you fill your tank intelligently, you won't have issues with clarity.

As a parting thought, I would like to mention the "look," I personally find this quite attractive for substrate; the dark color shows many types of shrimps, fish, and snails well, and it looks nice in photos. The only potential negative is it is ate dark--if you put very dark species against it, you won't get the same effect as a light species. In that case, you may want a lighter-colored substrate. Otherwise, thumbs up all around from me. Just watch that pH buffering effect for a bit, depending on your water type you may have some instability for a few weeks.

I used this in a 2.5 gallon nano and it buffers the water nicely if you want a shrimp tank, I saw a nice drop in pH, kH, & gH, but this substrate is extremely light so I would not recommend it for use with fish and definitely not for bottom dwelling fish. I planted some low light, low growth plants along with a couple high light, high growth plants and everything is doing well, but I still wouldn't use this in a tank any larger than 5 gallons and never with fish.

Lower layers turn into mush after a few months and is like having a layer of dirt on bottom of tank.Granuales are tiny and fragile and will break apart and get sucked into vac so its impossible to clean and if you stir it up it mucks the tank up real quick.

I also havent seen any benifits to the Shrimp. I have two ten gallons both with red cherries and the tank with regular cheap gravel seem to show better colors. So now I am stuck with a tank with dirt on the bottom that I cant clean and will have to replace.

External / Hang On Plastic Aquarium Fish Breeding Box Satellite L (new)

Its about the biggest hang on breeder of any kind that I have seen. You could subdivide it into three compartments, but I wouldn't they are too small for an adult 2"to 3" fish to really be in. The day that I received this in the mail, I put a pregnant molly fish in it. The next day, I had 24 live fry, and the mother was swimming comfortably in it. I would give this a five star rating except for two faults. 1. One tiny plastic piece that locates the breeder to the tank was missing (its not critical, I have one of the two pieces and it seems alright, but for best operation you want both) and the other fault, is that when I attached my air pump to it and turned it on, the bubbles make quite a racket. But it provides plenty of aeration to the fry, and has these neat little gates so that no one gets pulled over the return water gate into the main tank. I will probably try a more powerful air pump and see if that quiets things down, or maybe take off the nozzle that directs water flow into the breeder. If I needed a second breeder tank, I'd take this over net breeders, or the suction cup breeders with no hesitation (I've tried both, and lost all or most of the fry, the net breeders rip too easily, and have other problems, and the plastic ones with suction cups the vent holes are too large for small fry). Solid 4 stars here.

I purchased a a smaller cage when I first got my canary (~16inches long) and noticed he could only hop and not fly from end to end. Now he can actually fly as well as hop. I am happy and so is he. A happy canary is a singing canary and so he does.

What happened? I ordered this bird cage because I thought it was a good deal. Then I opened the box! The item was listed as new but the large plastic bottom of the cage, which was supposed to be PURPLE by the way, was very scratched up and the sticker on the front was even torn! REPTI-FLO 250 PUMP 48

I was not impressed with the product at all. I bought it to flow H2O through the small fountain in my tree frog set up. The pump worked a day or two and then just burned out. I even made sure it was clean of cricket debris. I don't know if it is just this particular pump or the product as a whole, but I am looking for a different brand.

Yes, the laterite must be washed as does Caribsea Flora-max (see Super Natural Flora-Max). Both have a purpose, with the laterite clay providing the silt required for Amazon Swords and others aquarium plants (Google "aquarium plants requiring laterite"). The laterite provides the fine medium required for Swords, et Al., without the mess of introducing mud into the freshwater aquarium And this medium does settle out quickly when disturbed (see my Amazon video "Adding Inconvenience to the Cleaning Task" at ).

Laterite is filthy stuff initially. I rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed until it was finally clean enough to put in the aquarium. I will not buy this item again.

I got this kit a few months ago for my Laguna 2100 pressure-flo. It is a good replacement kit with the necessary parts. I'll still give a 5 star, but I wish it had a 20w bulb instead of the 18w. My factory uv light was 20w. Other than that, good for a annual replacement for your koi pond filtration system.

I waited for this product it was late getting to my house.When I got it the two corners was broken.I could deal with that because I had to cut to make it fit in my Aquarium anyways.But the worst part there was no instructions and when you held it up to the light you can see that the whole middle of the 3D picture had a big crack running down the middle of it.Now I have to wait for the reply from the company to see if they will exchange it or just take it back.I would of kept it it looked real except for the damage.I was hoping to have my Aquarium set up before my fish got here.It looks like it will be to late.

Our fish love this stuff, and they seem to thrive on it. I'm puzzled by the other reviewer who said that this product smelled too strongly and caused his whole room to "smell like fish food." I don't have that problem at all. With the container closed, I can't smell this food even if I hold it to my nose. If I _open_ the container and hold it to my nose, that's a different story. But I can't imagine it stinking up a whole room, no matter how sensitive one's nose is.

All my fish eat this food without hesitation. My only gripe about this product is the intense smell of the fish flakes. The case does not seal the smell so unless you want your room to smell like fish food you will have to put the entire canister somewhere else or in a tighter case. Other than that, the fish have no problems with the food but customers might find the smell too much. Good luck with your fish!

I run a 5000 koi pond with rocks and lilies under clear summer skies---and with blooming trees and autumn leaves. I gave up on UV after the failure of another expensive unit. And found this---to eliminate the problem that was feeding the very heavy algae blooms. You can't thoroughly vacuum a rock-lined pond. This stuff, used weekly, brought my pond from (after the UV failure) cleaning the filter every half hour and having to leave it off at night---to running day and night with once-every-24-hour filter cleaning. I tried this out last year. I have a large 10,000 gal. koi pond in my yard with lots of overhanging trees. When we bought the house, the pond had been neglected for seveal years. Cleaning with a pond rake was a mess and hard work. I bought this looking for a better way without very high expectations. It worked great! It cleaned up virtually all of the old debris and silt still in the pond. Didn't bother my fish or plants or stain my rock borders. I didn't realize they made vacuums this small, and it works. It doesn't siphon too quickly, so you can swish the gravel around to suck up the stuff settled at the bottom.

It self starts as long as the tank is full (mine's a 3 gallon). If you stop after about a gallon it doesn't tend to start back up.I use it once a monce when I'm going to swap out some of the water anyway.

If you have a 10 gal or smaller tank you need this. No reason to spend any more money. It's also great for draining the tank for a water change.

If you follow the instructions, this thing will work very quickly. I remember wrangling with gravel vacs as a kid, but this starts fairly easily every time. Just make sure the length of the vacuum tube is right for your tank mine is about the same length, so it's a little more difficult to start that it would be if there was ample room for the tube inside the tank.

I'm guessing I'm the first to review this item, because what can you really say about them??? Put them on the end of airline tubing attached to an air pump and with even low pressure, they will make tiny bubbles in the water for about a year. If your in a pinch or really cheap, you can often scrub them with dish detergent and a toothbrush and get another few months out of them, or just spent the extra dime and replace them, when they begin to clog up....
