Buy Vibra-Flo® Air Pump; Mini Now
I like this mini air rater.I just needed a new one because the old one was putting out much threw the air stone. This one kicks for a small little thing!!The only good things that I can say about this pump is that it looks nice and it's small in size. However, it sounds like a truck. It is so loud that while on the first floor of the house, you can still hear it on the second floor with the door closed. Compared to my boyfriends Tetra Whisper 100, this pump is very distracting and atleast 10 times louder. This pump is a dream! It's so quiet compared to our last pump; I don't even notice it's there! It has great output, too, this is perfect for our little tank.Sunday, November 16, 2014

Fluval Shrimp Stratum
Update:
09/29/11 Somehow the survival rate of the CRS and OEBT shrimplets are very low. Severial berries but only 3 babies survies so far. They are in 2 difference tank. Neocaridina (cherry veriaties) breeds like roaches. I changes out the products both tank with Akadama soils, and crushed bricks. Will update if it make any difference. But so it's not that impressive with Caridina.
Update:
10/11/11 The rest of my OEBT hatched fine in crush brick and serveral Crystal shrimplets are swimming around on Akadama. Conclusion: in my experience, I would only use this stuff for Neo. Don't waste your money if you are into a more expensive shrimps. This stuff is not good for survival rate. From my experiance Stratum takes my pH down by .2 which no ammonia leaching. Keeps my shrimp and wallet happy!I've had very good luck with this substrate. I was a bit worried, because others have mentioned problems such as difficulty planting with it and breakdown over time. I've had good experiences on both fronts--I planted my 2nd tank with FSS with dwarf hairgrass, and I thought it would be a royal pain to slip in all the individual nodes. In the end it was a compete non-issue, and the hairgrass actually rooted more quickly and solidly than in Eco complete (which I have in another tank). The only item I had trouble planting was a heavy stem plant--for those, you'll want to weight or temporarily cover with a rock, etc. until they root.
Shrimp seem to thrive in tanks with FSS, although I have noticed a fairly severe pH buffering effect for the first few weeks, so be careful or you can have some die off. This seems to fade over time so if you need big buffering you will have to augment or look elsewhere. Once established, shrimp breed like rabbits (I have RCS and Blueberry Shrimp), and seem to enjoy themselves. I've had no real soil breakdown to speak of in about 8 months, but I will keep watch on it. No need to wash this beforehand, by the way; in fact, there are nice small granules n there you'll probably lose if you wash it. I had no problems with dirtying up the water at all, if you fill your tank intelligently, you won't have issues with clarity.
As a parting thought, I would like to mention the "look," I personally find this quite attractive for substrate; the dark color shows many types of shrimps, fish, and snails well, and it looks nice in photos. The only potential negative is it is ate dark--if you put very dark species against it, you won't get the same effect as a light species. In that case, you may want a lighter-colored substrate. Otherwise, thumbs up all around from me. Just watch that pH buffering effect for a bit, depending on your water type you may have some instability for a few weeks.

I used this in a 2.5 gallon nano and it buffers the water nicely if you want a shrimp tank, I saw a nice drop in pH, kH, & gH, but this substrate is extremely light so I would not recommend it for use with fish and definitely not for bottom dwelling fish. I planted some low light, low growth plants along with a couple high light, high growth plants and everything is doing well, but I still wouldn't use this in a tank any larger than 5 gallons and never with fish.Want Fluval Shrimp Stratum Discount?
Lower layers turn into mush after a few months and is like having a layer of dirt on bottom of tank.Granuales are tiny and fragile and will break apart and get sucked into vac so its impossible to clean and if you stir it up it mucks the tank up real quick.I also havent seen any benifits to the Shrimp. I have two ten gallons both with red cherries and the tank with regular cheap gravel seem to show better colors. So now I am stuck with a tank with dirt on the bottom that I cant clean and will have to replace.

I have a cascade filter, and have always just used Whisper filters but I thought I would give the "real" filter cartridge a try. I am going to use these up but I will not be buying them again. The whisper cartridges you can add more carbon to them if you want, these are completely sealed so no way of adding anymore carbon to them. In general the Whisper filters just seem to keep the tank clearer/cleaner. They do work but just not as well as the Whisper.Great filter for my 20 gal tank with 10 Tetra's. Marina 3-in-1 Guppy Trap
Buy Marina 3-in-1 Guppy Trap Now
This floating "3 in 1" is supposed to make a breeding honeymoon suite, an isolation ward for timeouts for nippers, and a nursery for the new born fry of livebearers. I would give it a thumbs up on 2 of the uses, but baby guppy fry just swim right through the slits in the very bottom of the tank. I have used it for all three "traps" and found it to be excellent as a breeding tank to give your favorite couple their own private hideaway. And it seemed to have cured the swordtail that was going kind of crazy nipping at everybody. A week in solitary seemed to have cured him of that. At least for now. And as far as separating the momma from the babies, it does that well too. If that was a far as it went, I would love this Marina 3 in 1, however there are those wide slits at the bottom of the tank. Those slits in the bottom of the tank though are large enough for blue delta guppy fry to swim right through and possibly get eaten by one of the adult fish in the tank. I don't know how many fry she had altogether, but there are at least six baby guppies hiding out in the plants, both living and fake.
I still like the product and would recommend it to friends. My favorite thing about it is that it floats and does not need to be fastened to an air line.

Nutrafin Bio-Clear Biological Water Clarifier, 4.1 Ounces
Essentially, I had been making the mistake of overfeeding my fish for a pretty long time. Typically, before using any product like this (which, let's be honest, you dont need to use unless there's some underlying cause you need to address first), you should make sure that you've already addressed the cause of the nitrate spike that you're suffering from. Then, to speed the process of getting things cleared, and only then, is it appropriate to use a product like this. For the sake of your fish.
This Nutrafin stuff is fantastic. I saw slight improvement after one day of using a tiny amount of this product. And after two days, my water is clearer than it has ever been. I use this in conjunction with the basic, mechanical-only Fluval U1 underwater filter and a Whisper 10i (which i probably don't really need) in my 10-gallon. In the Whisper, I use a bag of Seachem Purigen. I also have a bottle of Seachem Clarity, which I bought just in case I needed it, but will now probably send back because the Nutrafin Bio Clear worked as advertised. Give it a shot, just make sure that you know (and have addressed) the causes of your murky water before using a clarifier to cosmetically enhance your aquarium. This product is truly one of a kind. I have used other types of water clarifier over the years but nothing compares to this. My water is always clean and clear but its only sometimes perfect. Half an hour after adding this I can see a big improvement, but the biggest difference is if you give it a day to work it's magic. It uses enzymes to digest certain nutrients and clear the water of that white bacterial cloud. This probably wont help if you have an algae bloom and its perfectly safe. If your using this on an aquarium that is new or overstocked you need to fix those issues first.
Also it is important to note that this is not a flocculation agent like 99% of other clarifiers. This removes white haze that is caused by bacteria. If your aquarium is dirty this will not help.

I wish the intake and output holes were larger. My pump discharges a 1.5" pipe and I have to reduce it to a 1.25" pipe in order to connect to this filter. I had it for about a year now and it works well.Read Best Reviews of Tetra Pond Bio-Active Pressure Filters Here
Received as promised from Amazon. Installed filter to my 1000 gallon fish pond. Has been installed and running for 5 days now and already I can see the difference. My prior filter was to small, over the years my fish population has grown. So a new filter was in order. Tetra Pond Bio-Active Pressure Filter is working perfectly. On installation, I dug a hole and used the 20 gallon bucket (from a big box home store for around $10) and sat the filter in the bucket. I used 11/2" PVC pipe as my backwash with a union to make it easy to disconnect for winter storage. The only downside is it's all plastic, so be careful when tightening all fittings, I also recommend usingteflon tape on the fittings. 5 stars for both Amazon and Tetra!

After looking at many filters I decided on this one to go along with the Tetra Pond Debris-Handling Pump DHP3600.My pond would not stay clear with my old pump and filter combo.
this filter and pump combo worked very well and with in 2 days i could already tell a difference that the pond was clearing. Using the back flush was a lot easier and more efficient than my old combo.
the only issue i have with this set up is the hose connections. to remove the hoses from the filter you need to undo the hose clamps which can be a minor inconvenience.
after about a week i had to open up the filter and clean it as a ton of sludge build up in there, i have back flushed it once since then and all is going well.
over all I am very happy with this filter.

Installation Set Kit 2 for 400494 or 1/2 in. Tubing on the Outflow Side
The green intake and spray bar that has been the mainstay of ehein filters for close to 50 years can be quite frankly an eye sore. They show algae easily and in my case detract from the design and look I aim for when aquascaping a new tank or simply re-designing an existing one.
It used to be only the G160 had a dark grey intake and spray bar I'm delighted to see ehiem is offerin black assemblies for most of their models. They virtually disapear in the tank and if this is your style or close to it, you're bound to love the look.

This thing sounds like a miniature motor running.
It completely drowns out my filter's sound which isn't really loud, but it does it to a point where you literally can't hear the filter unless you're a foot away.
Terrible unless you keep your aquarium in the basement or likewise isolated area.

^^^ is amazing. Hardly any noise, super compact, blends in well.It was quite silent for a few days but after a week it is soo annoying. If the pump is on an open shelf like mine it can be very disturbing..
I have a valve connected to control the airflow into the tank and when I increase the air amount the buzzing noise increases as well.. very disturbing.
The reviews said that this was a silent pump. I don't know if the noise is a result of a faulty product or a faulty design but this one is going back.

Nina Ottosson DogFinder Interactive game
Buy Nina Ottosson DogFinder Interactive game Now
I ordered this to add to my cat's growing collection of Nina Ottosson toys. It is easy to vary the challenge level of this game by using more/less of the bones, silding them over or not, etc. This is step up from the "Dog Brick" game-which the cat can solve really quickly now.The only draw back are the gaps along each "bone channel", which design wise probably makes it easier for the pet to slide the bone to reveal the treatbut small treats or kibbles easily fall through the gaps. About half of treats end up underneath the puzzle as the bones are slid around. I am going to try to fasten mesh along the bottom to keep the treats in the channel and off the floorwhich should fix it, but I would prefer having a solid, gap-free puzzle.
Read Best Reviews of Nina Ottosson DogFinder Interactive game Here
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.1. Product slides on floor, maybe not so much on carpet. We have hard wood and the grips don't keep it in place well.
2. The plastic bones offer no real ability to grip, in case the dog primarily uses its mouth for this. My Pug uses her paws and is able to get them flipped up eventually, but my German Shepherd primarily uses his nose. Because GSD's noses angle down slightly from nose to bottom lip and the bones are so close together and have NO grip (slick plastic), he can't get them out. Simply putting a knob on them (like on a dresser) could have made a HUGE difference.
RARELY, if I only have a few bones in (and only one per slot, as one end of the slot is narrower, thus forcing the dog to figure out the puzzle by sliding the bone to the wider end to get it out) he can get one or two out.
My Pug is VERY treat motivated so she doesn't give up. My GSD either isn't as treat motivated or gets frustrated and gives up easily.
3. There are little slits/narrow "holes" on the sides of the slots where the bones slide in. The little treats get stuck in here sometimes and I have to pop them out to reward my Pug's efforts. Sometimes they slide between the slits and I have to pick the whole piece up so she can get the reward from under it.
4. It is annoying to assemble. As mentioned previously, the slots are narrower at one end. You have to remove each bone one at a time (can't just dump it upside down to load it up again [well, you can remove half this way, then slide the others to the wider end and dump upside down to remove the other half]) then set it back up one bone at a time. I realize it has to be done that way for the puzzle part of it to work, but it is very annoying.
Bottom line: I noticed several other people mentioned similar things and I wish I had listened. I basically wasted $20 on something I will not use again. I used plastic cups and hid treats under one and slowly moved them around and then had my dogs "pick" the correct one with better luck and less hassle, while still encouraging them to "think".
My GSD had more fun playing with the bones outside of the piece by sliding them across our hard wood floor than playing with this.\
Saw this: http://www.amazon.com/Nina-Ottosson-Dog-Treat-Fighter/dp/B000XPCSAM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1342117552&sr=1-1, but after my lousy luck with the plastic one, I'm not dropping $50 on a potential dud.Wanted something to challenge our super smart Goldendoodle. Toy is well made and, if you follow the directions, easy to use. Fun bonding time for you and your dog. We will purchase more (they have different puzzles).

biOrb & biUbe Aquarium Stand, 14" W X 27" H
One important note however, the photo used doesn't accurately portray what you'll receive.
The upright column is actually a matte gray more akin to PVC than the polished chrome you see in the photo.
The back of the stand is actually composed of two flat black boards, not a solid piece as depicted above. As a result the chords coming down from your tank will be dangling visibly taking away from the slick presentation you're hoping for.
That said, it's still a nice little stand.I paid for functionality, storage, and appearance; I received none of these. Like the 2011 review, what I received is not what is pictured or described. The stand they sent doesn't match that reviewer's description no gray or chrome all black. There is no storage space. The unit is just three planks (only 23" tall instead of the 27 advertised) made of sturdy wood (or maybe wood-like). These assemble in an H formation. There are also two disks to put top and bottom. The disks are not 14" in diameter as specified, but 13.75" and with the beveling there's less than 13" diameter of usable space. It's wobbles easily on carpet, tile, linoleum and hardwood. I will not risk using it for my Hex5 tank which had been it's intended purpose. I might consider putting a one-gallon aquarium on it if I didn't have pets, kids, or anyone who might accidentally brush against it and send my betta to an untimely demise. Good points: it arrived promptly, was easily assembled, is black and round, works well with my decor, and should hopefully support a glass or two, so I can at least use it as an end table. In hindsight that's too much to pay for a cup holder.
