I have a JRT with itchy skin problems. The gerbil loves it. All the really special food gets taken inside for private eating. He likes the several exits we've noticed gerbils don't like to enter things that don't have another way out. He will also sit on top of it and ponder the world. This is gerbil number 3 the first two loved them as well. This one isn't chewing it up nearly as fast as previous occupants. Do get a couple, since eventually they get fairly chewed up.

I've had a few of these over the years, not because they don't last, but because the gerbils love to chew them, and they are sturdy enough that they are not chewed through. However, when I get a new set of gerbils, they get a new Timber Hide-A-Way. I've never had to buy more than one for each set of gerbils (and, in fact, could use the same one, but give them a new one anyway). They like to play in it and gnaw on it to keep their teeth short.

It's the best chewable habitat I've seen. We had a different model our gerbil demolished -but that model was painted bright colors. I suspect it was somewhat toxic to chew on, though our gerbil survived.

This is unpainted and seems as safe a habitat as one could buy. Only 3 issues:

1. The label was a nuisance to remove.

2. It's tacked together, so hope the gerbil can figure that out.

3. It's made in China, so we can only cross fingers and hope it really is relatively non-toxic.

Update: Well, four issues. Our gerbil is a manic chewer, and he chewed into a tack on a similar structure. He broke a tooth, which the abscessed. He's now the 150 dollar gerbil, recovering post-op. This wood hut has similar tacks holding it together. If Kangaroo recovers fully, we'll cut this structure apart and build him something held together by string.

I had one of these when I had a guinea pig a few years ago. He loved the little wood hut.

It always stayed clean and he enjoyed nibbling on it. A BIG bonus is that it is very durable, and it lasted him about 5 years or so.

Previously I used cardboard boxes with sections cut out for entry and windows. My pig loved those and would immediately start to nibble on them. They were free and lasted about three months. I ensured that there was no ink, tape or labels on the boxes.

I purchased this recently, and my pig loves it, of course. He's already sticks his head out the top and the side window. I think that this is better for him, because it will help his teeth wear down better than a cardboard box. I don't see any dangers in my guinea pig using this.

The construction is very good, no loose pieces. It's also size appropriate. Great product, fast shipping and arrived in good condition.

I have used NPX Bioplastics before, so I am not new to this product, and it is an excellent product. However, the product pictured in this description is the small pellets (1-2 mm), which I wanted, as opposed to the large pellets (5-6 mm), which I received. The larger pellets take far more powerful flow to tumble, and have far less surface area to be effective. Now I have to find the smaller pellets from a seller I can trust to send me what they are advertising.

To sum up: this is an excellent product, but the seller didn't send me this product, they sent me an inferior one.

Nice light. Replaced a dual T8 fixture and this offers more light. Very slim, nice light color, lower energy. Really impressed.

I got this lamp as a replacement for my standard light fixture on a 29g tank because I wanted to be able to grow alive plants. I have only had it for 2 weeks now and I can't say anything about the long term success, but the light levels are definitely sufficient to be called low-moderate lighting, where with the standard fixture the tank was a very low light.

The option to turn on/off the blue and white LEDs separately is great. I only use the white ones during the day and sometimes I turn on the blue ones at night. They are both connected to the same plugin though, so you can't use different timers for the two LED types, which is not a big deal for me but might be important to other users.

Overall I am really satisfied with this light. It is bright enough for my purposes, energy efficient and comes at a fair price.

I wanted to replace my T5 NO light with an LED. After reading reviews of this product, I purchased it via amazon. Unfortunately, the light did not work at all. I requested a replacement and it came promptly. The light is everything I want. Nice and bright. Just the right amount of par for my 20 long (maybe a bit too much). Easy to attach to the aquarium frame although I did have to remove the glass top. I would be concerned about 'jumpers' but no one has escaped yet. I would buy this again. It is a bit pricey. Even with the first not working and having to return, the product itself if a five star for me.

While not perfect, I think these lights are a great value. Assuming you are putting this over a 29 gallon tall or a 20 gallon long, you will see average to good plant growth (with better growth from the shorter tank, of course). As a pure fish light, its colors are nice.

Frankly, you won't find an LED with these PAR values at this price outside of DIY.

Flourite Red, 7 kg / 15.4 lbs

I have been keeping a planted aquarium for many years and Flourite is the best substrate for plants that I have ever used. True, it is a pain that you need to rinse it, however, if you use a very fine colander with a hose or in the bathtub like I did it is very easy. You will want to let the dust settle after you put it in your aquarium before turning your filter on. (depending on how well you rinsed the substrate.)

Other reviewers are not kidding, you will need to take this stuff outside and spend a long time with a hose and bucket to rinse out the silt to an acceptable level. It looks nice in the aquarium though.

I put this substrate in my turtle tank after reading a glowing endorsement on a web site dedicated to turtles. I knew upfront that it needed to be rinsed well, more so than an average back of rocks. What I didn't expect was if the turtle or fish makes the slightest fuss with the flourite a cloud of dust is dispersed throughout the tank. The benefits of this product are the pleasant appearance and use as a planting medium. The drawbacks are the constant production of dust and the increased filter maintenance. Unless you're wanting to plant your aquarium I would recommend sticking to river rocks or other suitable substrate. If you choose to use this product I definitely recommend switching from the sponge filter to floss. I am using a 100% polyester crafter's stuffing and it is excellent at catching all the dust.

Tetra EasyStrips Test Strips

I have been using this for about a week and comparing it against my API Master Test Kit and here are the results I got.

I have a 10 gallon tropical freshwater tank, a 8 gallon shrimp tank and a small betta fish tank.

All of the them are cycled and controlling the parameters are important for the shrimp tank.

I got this for the convenience vs liquid test kits, which are known to be more accurate

There was well over 1 year till the expiry date but I have found the test strips to be inaccurate.

Tetra test strips vs. API master test kit

Nitrate(ppm): 30 vs 80

Nitrite(ppm): 0 vs 0

GH(ppm): ~75 vs 80

KH(ppm): ~60 vs 120

pH: ~6.6 vs 8.0

The parameters that way off are Nitrate, KH, pH and also Chlorine.

I do not have a Cl test kit but there is no way my tap water has 0ppm of Cl. I smell it myself in a bath.

Bottom line: extremely inaccurate.

Have been using the strips for month or two and they work ok for a quick reading. I have compared the results with another brand test strip and the API master test kit. The only one that is really off for me is the nitrate which keeps coming up bright pink or 200 and the real level is 20. Not sure why it keeps doing this except maybe since my tank water is so hard? Not sure. I have tried the strips in other samples of water including spring water and distilled water. And it seems to work fine with those samples. I think for most causal fish keepers the strips should work fine but remember the strips are not as good as the liquid tests. I probably will not be buying these again since I always have to double check the nitrate level to be sure it's not really off the charts.

From Cichlids to Fancy Goldfish I've been keeping fish for 30+ years.Just about every major manufacture and boutique specialty company has a water conditioning and treatment product.I can't say I've tried them all, but close too it. Some products have at the least, minimal effectiveness while others can be potentially dangerous.

An example would be Stress Coat which has binding sugar strands in the Aloe. This isn't a problem unless one of your fish has a small scratch or wound.The sugar feeds the bacteria which can lead to major infection and dire consequences.I've been using Amquel for years and it's a fine conditioner, excellent at removing chlorine, and Chloramines, but like all these products they come with limitations.

Well, with one exception and that's Prime by Seachem.

It removes chlorine/chloramine and other toxic metals from water instantly. Plus, as little as literally ONE drop treats a gallon of water. I have a total of 115 gallons of water in my 3 tanks. I perform 50% weekly water changes in all of the 3 tanks. To give you an idea of how economical Prime is, I've had a 250 mL bottle of it for more than a year. Only a few dollars' worth will treat hundreds of gallons of water. And as I've mentioned above, I perform 50% weekly water changes for my 115 gallons of water. This heater works great in my 55-gallon marine tank. It didn't take long to heat my tank and it is pretty accurate. I will only buy titanium heaters after almost being electrocuted by a cracked glass heater (for some reason the GFI didn't trip).

It would be nice if the power cord for this heater was a foot longer and also the directions state that the heater is only to be mounted horizontally, I would prefer the option of mounting it vertically also but this is not a big deal.

I have been so happy with this heater that I've bought 3 and considering a fourth. After having a standard plastic submersible heater crack leading to electrical shocking of my 2 turtles I needed a replacement. Using a quick fix with some old glass heaters turned out to be a bad idea as those shattered either during water changes or by my rambunctious turtles. When Amazon has them, they also have the best price on them. The fixture that came with my 20 gallon nanotank made the tank too hot. For tropicals, that's not an issue, but for marine tanks, it messes everything up. I have a nice Coralife fixture that sits in the center of the top and this light is perfect. I can use this and another compact fluorescent or I can use one compact fluorescent and a blue light. Amazon ships wicked fast and you will not find a better price. I know I haven't. I now just have tropicals in this tank, so just one of these bulbs gives a good light without making it too bright and causing an algae overgrowth.

This is a nice tank. It seems pretty solidly made, if a bit fragile (it is made of glass, after all). The major drawback is its lack of lid/cover. Since I have tropical aquatic plants and animals in this tank, it's pretty important to have a lid due to heat and smell. I'm going to get an acrylic lid cut to shape and size at a local plastics manufacturer, but I imagine that isn't an option for most people. In the interim, I have a rectangular piece of plexiglass sitting on top, and it kind of spoils the clean aesthetic effect. Still, it's a lovely tank, and I'm glad I bought it.

It is attractive and well made. How ever it holds only a little more than 2 gallons...NOT 3. Also can not purchase a lid for it.

The clarity of this glass is just crystal. Really. It looks as transparent as genuine crystal and the float is just flawless. It can be hard to see in the illustration but the curved front of the tank is beveled which makes the tank appear even more jewel-like and dressy enough to proudly display in the front office. It's is an impressive piece of glass work!

This is a great tank. Superb craftsmanship, and just simply beautiful. No rim so it looks nice and sleek. As to the comments it is not 3 gallons....kind of a fib. It is 3 gallons (or 2.96 gallons which is essentially 3 gallons) Non tempered glass so you can drill these tanks! Awesome, Awesome!
