My small tank has simply bottom of the tank gravel filtration which use a vertical tube for water circulation. This stone fit nicely into the vertical tube. And the bubbles are quite small. Very pleased with the great value.Simple, cheap air stones, work well. Wish the bubbles were a little smaller, other than that they work as anticipated.Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Tap Water Filter Replacement Cartridge
Get the Tap Water Filter kit (note: though this review is for the replacement cartridge, you'll need to get the whole kit first if you don't already have one).
It was what saved me from quitting my new fish hobby, and I hope it does the same for you.
Though the tap water that comes out of your kitchen faucet is suitable for human consumption, it still may not be suitable for your fish EVEN AFTER PUTTING IN the Anti-Chlorine and Anti-Stress (good bacteria) conditioners.
This is something a lot of store salespeople are simply just not aware of, and cannot help you with when you ask them why the new fish they are selling you keep dying a few days after you've put them in your tank.
Even 6 months after adding a canister filter to the undergravel and Hang-On-Tank filters I already had on my 55 gal, I still had problems with new fish dying.
That's when I saw the Tap Water Filter on the shelf and read the info on the box. It sounded believeable, and I wanted to try it, but it was kind
of expensive ($79.99).
So when I saw the same thing on Amazon for half the cost, I chanced it and am now SOLD on this amazing product.
Now my fish hardly ever die, and my tank is flourishing beautifully. This filter does a great job. the only problem is that it is overpriced and does not filter much water before it is spent.

I have several salt water tanks. I use this for mixing salt water. Works great. Never a problem with water quality or unwanted algae blooms.Read Best Reviews of Tap Water Filter Replacement Cartridge Here
This product is easy to use, compact it fits under the sink. Its a plus for when you need fresh water on the double.Want Tap Water Filter Replacement Cartridge Discount?
Purchased the original filter canister through our local aquarium store when they made a custom aquarium for us, but they no longer carry these replacement cartridges (and they could not match this pricing either). This system runs the tap water through activated charcoal, a filter medium, and then through resin in order to purify the water for aquarium use. It really does a great job removing the chemical from the water, and these filters get a lot of the credit for our fish having long, healthy lives.
These filters actually do too good of a job, and we add good minerals back in to the water before putting it in the tank -we like to use a product called Equilibrium for that task (Seachem Equilibrium 600gram)
Glad that these replacement filter cartridges are still available here and our fish seem very happy about it too! If looking for a system, or a replacement cartridge for the system if you already have it, we recommend these highly.

Quiet One Lifegard Fountain Pump, 220-Gallon Per Hour
I am using the pump in a medium sized concrete fountain that is about 3' high. The pump hums so loudly that you can hear it over the sound of water running down the fountain. I have much larger pumps going in larger water features that are completely silent.
All in all I paid a little more for this pump hoping it would be quieter. What I got was a buzzing, broken pump. :(
Two stars for prompt delivery and the ability to drive water 3' up.

Marina Air Pump
UPDATE Aug 2012: All of these Marina air pumps get noisier over time. I've also broken the nipple on every single pump I've owned when I've tried to remove the air line. The 200 is not quiet from the start. Even so, I buy one every so often because they are cheap and most of them start out quiet. I get the 100 because I want the air. Originally I gave this product 5 stars. Now just 3.The quality is just not here material wise, the plastic nipples broke off 1st one after about 3 weeks the second after 5. they are recessed and had flexible airline attached, almost impossible to put any stress on them.
My guess is heat and poor quality plastic.

Both plastic nipples that the air hose attaches to broke off so now can't be used at all. I had purchased it about 6 months ago.Want Marina Air Pump Discount?
When this product first arrived, its performance blew my mind. It was silent and explosive, and my plants seemed to be thriving. When the Amazon box first arrived, I took out the air pump, connected the airline, plugged it in and let it run. That was the last time I touched it.
Two weeks later, the air pump was still going strong but my plants were all dead. The two black nozzles where the (2 foot) airline connected were barely hanging on: snapped under the routine pressure of running 24/7.
From a previous (horrible) experience with an Aqua Culture air pump, I was already cautious about poor quality air pumps, so I made sure I connected the airline only once. There was no constant tugging or pulling on the plastic nozzles: I connected an airline once the first time it was plugged in.
The pump's longevity simply isn't there.
I uploaded a picture of the broken pump after 2 weeks:

They can refund my money, but they can't refund my dead plants.

Aquatop CF300 3-Stage Canister Filter, 264 gph
After cleaning it up it is working great though. I've had it running for about 5 hours now on a 55 gallon, with a sand substrate, and my water has cleared up a lot. It came with plenty of filter media to fill up the three trays as well. Plastic Bio-balls, Activated Carbon, Filter Cotton, and what I'm assuming is Ceramic for more beneficial bacteria to grow on. The pump for priming it was also nice, made it super easy to set up.
I highly recommend this if you don't mind receiving something that appears to have been used. Maybe I was just unlucky, but it is still a great bargain despite this.
:::UPDATE:::
It seems that the filter media isn't included with this system anymore. They updated pictures to show notes on the media saying that it's not included instead of updating the description.
:::UPDATE AGAIN:::
For media I've been using Marineland Rite-Size filter pads that one has to cut to the proper size. As well as activated carbon, and ceramic, but I just get whatever is on sale when I need more.
At the current price of $80 with no media included I can no longer call this thing a bargain. I personally purchased this for $50 with media included. When I wrote half the price of the Cascade 1000, I literally meant half the price.Starting a new 55 gallon aquarium can be quite expensive. I wanted to do things right and not get 'soaked' in the process (sorry, bad pun!) After doing a great deal of research on filter types, I knew I wanted a canister. I had a bit of sticker shock while shopping around. Then I found this product!
My order was processed quickly, even delivered sooner than I anticipated. I had the unit put together and running in no more than 15 minutes. Getting it assembled was effortless. I was completely shocked at how silently it operates!
As I write this review, I am looking at my new little fishy family, swimming happily in their new home.
I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for great value, prompt delivery and a very effective filter.
My fishies thank you, and so do I!

The manufacturer's name who makes these canisters escapes me, but they label themselves as Sun Sun or Aquatop. Think of it as the generic version of EHEIM cause oddly enough all their media will work just fine with this. With that said, this has been a very affordable and helpful little canister. I bought mine on eBay (box said Sun Sun) and this one here (box says Aquatop) on Amazon. Honestly I wish Amazon had sold this before, cause it's cheaper here (on Amazon).Works fine after 1 year and bought my 2nd one to replace my EHEIM.
4 stars because I forget which model from EHEIM will the media pads fit from. And because as explained the handles for the trays like to pop off (I find inching it from one side to the other works best).
Only other issue you may run into is if you hear a rattle or hum sound, it's the little propeller (I forget the name of it) that spins did "ware out" on one of these, but I replaced it for about $5 ... No big deal.

I setup the canister last night without too many issues. Initially it ran whisper quite but has since developed a vibration noise that I will have to figure out tonight. The media trays are a good size but they are made quite cheaply. The media trays are very securely seated in the canister and almost impossible to remove without damaging the popup handle on them. In fact both lower trays already had the handle pop off. I have to figure out a way to remove the trays without relying on the handle. I may need to grease the outside of the tray to see if that helps. The media included is ample but I wish it came with a better mechanical sponge filter or foam batting for the lowest tray. Also it would be nice if the input bar and spray bar came with some external bracing as I am having a hard time getting it to rest nicely on the back of the tank.
But so far I am happy with the performance per price ratio

264 GPH?????? I'm replacing a Penn Plax Cascade 1000 on my 46g bowfront with this. Not for any reason, because the Cascade 1000 still works well after 6-7 years (gaskets are a little worn and tubes are filled with gook). To compare, the Cascade 1000 spray bar is longer and has more pressure coming out of it (Penn Plax is rated at 265GPH). The Cascade 1000 is larger, has a handle, and comes with all the filter media. This external filter is much smaller, has about 80% the spray output, and comes with white floss on the 3 provided trays, and a bio sponge on the bottom tray.Next, the priming pump. Doesn't work unless you fill the filter up with water. After you fill the filter up with water, it works fine. The Penn Plax primes an empty canister.
Noise? Quiet as can be. I can't hear it at all. Penn Plax is just as quiet.
Hoses? comes with nice green (Eheim type) hoses, and not the cheap hoses that comes with the Fluval 306.
Is it worth sixty dollars? YES
Will you be happier with a Penn Plax 1000 for a little more? Yes, also considering the Penn Plax comes with the filter media.
Overall, it's cute, does a fair job, and is not too heavy to carry to the kitchen sink.
Do I feel safe with this unit? Yes. the connections are tight, and everything fits perfectly together.
Overall well made, but if you're looking for a lot more power, I'd choose the Penn Plax 1000.
Edit: to add, I think a lot of people are complaining about water in the filter when they received the filter. I found drops of clean water in the filter, and chalked it up as the company was testing to make sure the filter is in working order. Hopefully, someone from the company will respond.
edit: to add again-after changing the filter I noticed the canister can be assembled wrong. I know that sounds weird, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it until I turned the trays 90 degrees. if your canister makes noise, consider this because there is nothing to stop you from putting together the canister wrong.
edit: March 18, 2012the canister filter output isn't working. in other words, the canister is taking water in and not extracting the water. I do have the inline UV filter on the outtake, and this may be the problem. Today, I purchased the Cascade that I've been comparing it to, and am taking this as a loss.

I brought this item a year ago at first it seemed like it was not working,so I started from the begining, and drained all the water out,and totally cleaned every item in my daughter's 10 gallon tank. When I replaced all the items back in the tank, it still appeared not to work, but I had a little patience with it, and within a few days the water to my amazement became crystal clear like glass. I was very satisfied with the results. Take it from a person who has tried everything to keep the water clear, and I was very frustrated, although this item seemed very pricey at the time. It was worth the the money. I would recmmended this product to anyone having trouble keeping their aquarium water clear.Stephen H.

I've had a hard time telling it this is working but I have it in my tank. My only complaint if you have a five gallon expect this to look HUGE. I ended up taking a hammer to it and put parts of it in the filter. It's way, way too big. In a big tank it would be no problem. Also, it's slightly sharp. My betta tore it's fins on it so avoid this if you're doing a betta tank. Other than that, my fish seem to like it.Iv had this in my tank for almost one year. After while it turns blackish and looks nasty. It seems to be very pricey.Monday, July 22, 2013
Power Gravel Cleaner 30-125
The unit is basically an HOB (Hang On Back) filter but it's a clever idea and easy to see how it helps keep your tank substrate clean in between serious break down cleanings and water changes.
1) The suction is more than adequate I use Terrazona glass as a substrate in many of my tanks, these are quite large and heavy and the suction from this unit had no problem sucking those up, a simple shake released them. it's comparable to Python water exchanger. But for a unit price of $100 Cobalt could certainly have provided extra socks and a stronger pump. Not to mention a flow control much like the simple switch on the Python
2) The filtration socks are flimsy open mesh nylon and allow for some debris to re-enter the tankfor $100 for the cleaner Cobalt should really include more than one.
An alternative is to buy some 80 Mil filter pad (I use this stuff in all my filters) it removes debris down to 5 microns in size and will polish your water as you use clean the gravel. The cost for a package of three replacement socks retails for an outrageous , p. You can buy an 18" X 30" piece of "Pure Flow" 80 micron padding for under $10 it's a no brainer. Simply wrap a piece around the plastic frame instead of the sock or better yet use both.
3) For a machine meant to clean up to a 125 aquarium and provide the consumer with a mere 24" of vinyl tubing is short sighted and cheap. Rather than move the unit along the rim of the tank as you work. An easy fix is to grab some 5/8 tubing I pulled 5 feet off a siphon gravel cleaner and it works great and solved the problem.
However there are reasons to like this product.
1) The extension tube is excellent and the rubber dividers provide an air tite seal. Plus you can adjust the size to fit the depth of most any tank.
2) It's fast and it's convenient, despite it's flaws. This is a real time saver especially if you have multiple tanks.
I've used an eheim sludge remover for years and it's effective but time consuming. Like all eheim products it's exceptionally well made and the micro screen compartment for capturing debris never needs replacing. However it's limited in size to tanks 24" in depth and tube extensions are not available.
A few years ago I paid $79 apiece for two of them but see Amazon sells them for $39 that's a steal. They're a wonderful addition to any aquarists arsenal of cleaning and maintenance products. In fairness the Cobalt is stronger and more versatile especially for larger jobs.
Over the past 40 years of keeping fish I've seen both products and companies come and go with rapid frequency. Cobalt would be serving both itself and their customers better by offering more value for the dollar and up grading the overall quality of this product.

The good: The cleaner looks nice and is easy to use. Not being up to my armpit to reach the bottom was nice. It really does cycle a lot through. The bad: It's not filtering that much out. Even when I doubled up the screen on the flow to try and filter out more, it was still pushing through all the food and poop right back into the tank. It only took me 3 attempts at cleaning the tank before I put a cup into the waterfall and dumped it into a bucket so I could look at the water that was going back into the tank. Very large uneaten food flakes and plenty of poop were right there in front of me.
Realistically great idea, I was sold on it (and I'm a cheapskate), but SORELY disappointed.

Try to use it but after 30 seconds the Small particles Of Gravel Stops Motor. I removed the spinner clean it put it back and it stopped again. Did not used it any more. Going back to Amazon for refund.Maybe is good for large gravel but not for with my cichlids gravel.
Other problem is the length of the hose. It's only 2 ft. and is very stiff. You need to replace the hose with longer one and more flexible.
