Fluval Moss Ball

I picked this up at a Pet Smart, where they had these displayed next to the real plants. I did one of those 'oh I fail to read look at pictures' moves and bought one assuming it was a real one, IDK, stupid move. ANYWAYSSo I decided to put this in my Beta Fish Tank since I paid 7$ for it I thought Id try it anyways.

ON THE UPSWING-

My Betta Fish is constantly entertained by this. As I did not squeeze the ball to get all of the air out it floats, so it helps relieve boredom, and he likes to sort of lay on it like they will do in nature, on leaves and other soft flotsam.

It seems to collect some of his food, which I think he enjoys also as he like to come and peck on it and see if he can find any loose goodies. All in all if for no other reason than a good activity item for Betta fish , its a not so bad fake ball of fur!

I ordered four of these for my 55gallon tank. They are pretty cool, i really didn't know if they were real of not when i bought them but they are fake. Its a great thing for me since i hate the real ones. They always broke up and got into my filter. These ones have i think carbon inside them and the green stuff feels like hair into you get them wet. They look real after your rinse them down. You got to put them in water and squeeze the ball to get all the air out so it doesn't float. Overall i am happy, and will by 4-5 more in the next few weeks.

i was constantly changing the yucky water in my turtle tank until i bought a moss ball and dropped it in. it has been a week and the water is crystal clear. i am not for sure of how long it works or if i need to do anything to it but for right now i am so impressed. (i really wish when things came pre-packaged, the instructions were not written in nu-readable micro print.)

When I first got this, I didn't really think it'd made a difference, but it definitely does!

I have some in my 29 gallon planted tank with fish, and they love it! My gourami loves to pick at it and move it around the tank, and the cory cats like to hide under it. It really does make a quality in water clarity, tooI have a Fluval 205 in my aquarium and it has made the water eve clearer, which I didn't think was possible.

I also have one of these in my 1 gallon breeding tankI have seven Platty fry in there now, all about a quarter inch longand they like to hide in/around it. It also helps keep the water fresher longer, so I don't have to do a ton of water changes every day.

I have been keeping aquariums for around 15 years, and will definitely add this to my regular tank regimenI love them!

I have never had such an easy time keeping a turtle tank clean. I have an 8 inch painted turtle in a 20 long tank with a waterfall filter. I put 2 of these balls in the water and they seem to really hold a host of organisms to keep the water clear along with the contents in the ball itself. The fish in the tank pick at it so there is something living on it that the fish go for.

I am using this light with a planted fresh water tank and it puts out a lot of light. The instructions are easy to understand and the programming pretty intuitive--it is about as good as it gets. The fixture is easy to mount, and sits securely on the tank. It comes with some bulbs that for freshwater purposes need to be replaced.

It is a top notch unit and for my purposes is essentially flawless. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Addendum:

It is now a little over a year since the light was purchased. Two weeks ago, I noticed some problems with the LED light and two of the four Lamps. I called Aquatic Life's customer service and they were wonderful--they diagnosed the problems and promised a replacement ballast and two LEDs. Even though it was past the warranty period, they did not charge me and I received the parts in less than one week. Very impressed with them.

Very nice light. I wish it pivoted up and down so I didn't have to lift the light off of my tank all the time. The Aquaticlife bulbs that it comes with are nice, but if you really want to make your tank look awesome and give those corals the look that will impress, then go with this combo.

Some componenets inside were loose. The transformer inside and the tube end plugs were also loose. Design makes it easy to fix but should have been checked at the factory. Design and light output is very excellent.

I have had this light for a few weeks now. I have noticed a complete change in the life of my salt water tank. Perfecto Manufacturing APF36460 Glass Canopy Aquarium, 46-Inch

The Canopy was poor constructed at the seam...........the attachment strip was off by 1/8 inch or so, resulting in an inability to fit the canopy in my acquarium.

Emailed the merchant, who immediately and graciously apologized. Upon return of the defective canopy, a full refund (inclusive of shipping) was given. Quite grateful to this merchant and would strongly recommend them as a seller.

After three years I'm still very happy with the glass lid for the 46-gallon bowfront tank, but I have some reservations.

First, like the other reviews stated, this lid will not fit your tank out of the box. I don't have the equipment to sand down glass; sandpaper doesn't cut it. It took three trips to local glass shops before I found one (Franciscan Glass, Mountain View, CA) that would trip 1/4" off the edge. No, the glass isn't tempered, but whatever machine they used took 30 seconds and the lid was fine.

Second, the black plastic seam between the two pieces splits down the middle after years of daily use, but a little Gorilla-brand black, heavy duty duct tape fixed that.

Third, and this might not affect you, but hard water deposits will eventually fog this glass up. It's not bad, but the lid hasn't been crystal clear since I got it. I'm not sure how to fix this other than giving it a good scrub every six months or so.

Still, buy it, take it to a local glass shop, and be happy. It's worth it.

UPDATE: After four years the glass cracked and I bought a replacement. Just like before, the canopy is 1mm too long, so I think it must be a defect in my tank. I'm too lazy to get the glass trimmed this time so now it just sits slightly ajar. Still worth it.

all the reviews are right. great make but its just a few cm's to long. i didnt get mine cut at a fancy store so its just a pinch lopsided. nothing you notice walking by but it bugs me. they need to make it just a few cms shorter and it will get a 5. this is really the only nice glass product ive found though.

the plant tablets work well, its designed for 10 gallon and under. I have a 7.5 gallon cube and the plants are growing like crazy.

it works fine I believe for very tiny aquariums as the amount of Co2 coming out is really incomparable with what you get from the Sera Tablets for example ... however i used for a while but i believe i need at least to put the complete Box in my aquarium for it to start showing effect ..

Super Naturals Type: Tahitian Moon

Replaced white sand with this and it is beautiful! Much more forgiving than the white and it sparkles in the light so far. Plants are growing great in it as well. Thanks!

This sand is super soft and looks gorgeous under aquarium lighting (it has a lot less sparkle when it's out of the water). My only complaint was that in a smaller tank (6 gallons) the filter could easily move the sand because it is so fine. I had to move decorations around to prevent the current from the filter from digging a hole in the bottom of my tank.

This product is very black and very fine, perfect sand for a wet or dry aquarium! I have it in my fish tank with a little neon gravel mixed in and it has a very nice effect when under a blue "night mode" light. However, it is very hard to clean this sand but works great once it is in the tank. At first when you add the water, you will notice some clumps floating but those will sink themselves in a matter of hours.

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch

This review is for the 48" Ray2 Daylight. I have only had it in use for less than 24 hours, but will give my initial impressions.

This product is made in China and is noticeable from the packaging (plain brown box) to the vague instruction sheet and very limited warranty.

The light itself is very compact and seems to have an average build. The supplied legs do not fit on a 1" tank frame, this was not an issue in my situation, since due to the light intensity I immediately knew that I had to raise it from the tank, I have a canopy and with this fixture being very lightweight, 3 zip ties easily mounted it about 4 inches from the water surface.

I purchased this light while planning to set up a standard 90 gallon tank, I truly expected to have to add supplemental lighting to reach the low light range for some of the plants I was planning on keeping, to my surprise this light far exceeded what I had expected, it is definately beyond the low light range even with a 24" depth, to the point where I will need to either diffuse the light or add co2 and ferts to keep the algae at bay. I do have a good bit of experience with planted tanks, HO lighting and injected c02, but unfortunately I just dont have much knowledge of par ratings which would help myself or others interested in this light to determine where this will put their tank. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and am fully confident that I will be able to grow more than the orginal plants I had expected to grow.

I will do an update in a month or so after after I see how plants respond and if there are any algae issues. Hope this helps!

Update:

After about 2 months of use, I love this light. My original impression was it may have been too much light but so far I have no algae issues and am not dosing any ferts. All plants are responding well, current plants are anubius, java fern, crypts, val, wysteria, red ludwigia and tiger lotus. I did have a brief power outage about a week after set up and when the power came back on only half the strip was lit, I feared what some other reviewers had mentioned, but after turning the power switch off and back on all lights were on. Another plus, I have almost no increase to my electric bill!

I picked up one of these for my 75G tank. I've wanted to keep plants in there in the past, but the 4' bulbs just weren't doing it.

Ordered the Finnex Ray2 when the bulbs went on my old Coralife fixture, and I've been very pleased with the results.

The tank itself is much brighter now, and plant growth throughout the tank has really taken off. I'll be ordering more of these as my old bulbs burn out. Why sink the money on bulbs that last a year when you can get a fixture that will last 7+ years. Great purchase, and a MASSIVE improvement over the garbage Marineland Double Brights.

edit: after excellent initial growth, the plant growth slowed way down. The light still works great, and I would still recommend this unit, but if you're going for a heavily planted tank this may not be the best option.

I purchased this light to replace a previous 332 watt amazon purchase that got hot enough to melt the fish tank supports.

Ordered it yesterday and it was on my doorstep today WOW!

Packaging was great. Plugged it in and it is very bright. My tank is a 150 gallons salt water with some mushrooms,anenomes and polyps. The previous lighting was 2 48" 220 watt power compact JEBO kits that worked great for about 8 years. I would say this LED light set is as bright or slightly brighter then 1 220/260 watt power compact light kit.

The light is very white like 10,000 Kelvin.

I LOVE how cool it gets, I would say it is under 130 degrees afte being on for 4 + hours.

I was pretty disappointed with the unit I received. I immediately plugged it in and fired it up when I got it, only to find that half the LEDs did not turn on. Due to my location, an exchange would probably end up costing me more in shipping than this light is worth, so I popped it open. Finnex uses exceedingly low quality solder inside this thing, and in my unit some parts were not even soldered, just shoved in the casing. I spent about an hour resoldering and reassembling the unit, it works great now. In the meanwhile, you get what you pay for, look elsewhere for your LED lighting needs.

Ordered one, received it, only half of the LEDs worked, returned it, repeat. The 48" version appears to have two LED strips from teh 24" version.

Decided to use two smaller ones instead. There appear to be some product quality issues so it would be wise to use multiple smaller lights instead of one larger light. That way, when one fails in the future, you only have to replace a smaller one.

General Finnex Ray2 Daylight info:

LED strip is about 1" per 8 LEDs. Product description shows the number of LEDs. This may be important to you because 16" version only has 10.5" of LEDs. The 30" version has the exact same LED strip as the 24" version.

Obtain the number of LEDs from the product description and divide by 8 to obtain width of LED strip.

I was not happy to receive a 16" version with only 10.5" of LEDs. I exchanged it for a 24" and I'm very happy with the 24".

Pros: This light is the perfect size for my 3 gallon tank.

Cons: Doesn't work with light timer; bulb is not replaceable once it burns out; bulb only lasted about 4 months.

I am posting this review to let people know that there is no moonlight "adaptor". It uses a combination of blue and white LEDs. I was under the impression that I would be able to switch between the two lights, but that is not the case. There are only two settings, on and off.

I use it on a 29 gallon terrarium. The light reaches to all points of the tank that aren't blocked by something. It is strong enough to create shadows where tank decorations are in the way.

The clamp is not wide enough to fit on the rim of my tank. Included is a small piece of black plastic thingy that you can screw onto a surface and then clamp your light to it. I didn't want to screw anything into my tank, so I used gorilla glue to attach it to the outside top rim of my tank.

I am torn between a 3 and 4 star rating, because I AM able to see my terrarium at night. But the description about an adaptor is incorrect. Hence the 3 stars.

Great little light for my guppy bowl which is a 2 gallon giant brandy snifter. Few other lights had an option to accomodate so thin an edge. My aquarium plants are now thriving. The moonlight blue daylight combination enhanced the fish colors. One down side it the need to manually turn in off and on. I would prefer if it worked on a timer. But the fish have trained nicely to the light, that feeding time is at hand. Smooth transaction and prompt delivery.

I was also under the impression that there would be an adaptor to switch from white to blue LEDs for day or night lighting. Not the case! The blue & white lights come out looking very moonlight-ish to me.

The light is also much tinier than I expected. It only lights up about half of my 33 gal tank, so I wouldn't recommend it for tanks bigger than 15 gal. It fits up to 1/4" rim, so make sure you measure before purchasing! 1/4" inch is a TIGHT fit, so think about your positioning because it will be difficult to reposition afterwards.

If I had read the comment about the light bulb not being replaceable, I would have never bought this product. 30$ for four months of use is definitely not worth it. Next time I'm buying a regular desk lamp!

we have a 20 gallon tank. my old 12 hour feeder we used for vacation for about 6 years stopped working properly. looked at a lot of feeders-really happy with this feeder. we use hard and flake; just break them up really well. go slow with the programit is not that hard as some have written, just follow instructions! i first did a test outside the tank to get the set-up just right[used a large cup] have it set for two feedings;8am and 8pmat three quarter. the food does not get damp at all. now we use it all the time-no more wondering if i feed them or notand always the right amount. My first impression of this was good until I had to take it apart, then the plastic container was so hard to undo it almost broke. I bought this for small turtle pellets, it occasionally has a few pellets get stuck, but after a few feedings it clears itself up. I like how it has 4 feeding times with multiple rotation choices. This allows me to make sure that we don't have uneaten food floating around. The side clamp holds tight and was is a big plus, the last feeder we had fell in and died. I am buying a second to stretch how long I can go with out refilling.

Pluses:

+ quiet water pump included

Negatives:

the included water pump at its lowest setting still creates a whirlwind of turbulence in the tank. Definitely not working out for my Betta fish. This really isn't a negative fish or coral that do require water movement so YMMV.

The accessories to my tank include a 7" tetra heater which nicely fits inside bank of the tank filter compartment and Eco-Complete substrate. Its not clear if the lumens on the LED is sufficient for plants with moderate demands but time will tell. I am considering either modifying the current water pump or replacing it with a lower flow unit.

This is a great small tank package for all the reasons listed above.

UPDATE Jan 19, 2012***

After much fiddling with the water pump intake and directing the return head to the heater, I have managed to find a calm water flow setting which seems to not upset my Betta. Since my last post, i have placed some marimo moss balls and dwarf hair grass in the tank. The LED seems to be bright enough to sustain plant life which is a good sign. Overall, i am very pleased with this tank.

I would first like to say that I have been keeping fish of all sorts for approximately eight years. I am knowledgeable in their habitats, housing requirements, and the sorts.

Despite other reviews I have seen for this product, it is actually not that bad. Especially for those that either have limited space or are just looking for that "Nano" aquarium.

Some may be skeptical about the lighting for this aquarium as well. As some may know, plants and live corals rely on a sufficient amount of light and light spectrums in order to properly live and grow. And even though LEDs are bright, expensive, and produce nice effects, not all are well suited for the job needed. I can assure you however, that the LEDs included for this kit are intense enough to allow my two live corals (whisker coral and candy cane coral) to continue to do very well. The only main issue, which other have indeed pointed out is the water flow rate coming from the output nozzle. There are two things you can do to adjust this flow and how it affects the water in your tank. One way is adjusting the flow rate via a little slider, located underneath the water pump motor, to a rate that you desire. I currently have mine set to a little under the max. Another way you can control the flow is adjusting the output nozzle itself. With this aquarium, you have the freedom to direct which direction the water flows out. Depending on what fish you have or the setup of your tank you can easily fix this to better suit your needs. I have aimed a little upwards to cause some nice surface tension which not only causes some disturbance on the top of the water, but also helps oxygenate the tank.

In conclusion I feel that this is definitively a great tank for new or experienced aquarium hobbyists. The sump on the back of the tank is a great barrier between what makes your tank run and what you actually want to see. And the LEDs are intense enough to support life that requires a certain amount of light. If you have any questions about my review or about your tank let me know.

The tank looks real nice, the filter is built in and you can get a small heater in the back no problem. Fits perfectly in our ikea desk hole. The pump is full of dumb though. Way to strong like putting your fish in an endless toilet. Easy to fix though just drill a couple holes through the pump hose.

I purchased this tank recently, and it was exactly what I was looking for. I have it on a 2'X4' end table and it looks terrific. I don't have fish in it yet as I am allowing it to cycle which is highly recommended for new tanks. The LED lighting is beautiful, it replicates natural underwater lighting and provides enough light for plants. I plan on adding 5 or 6 glofish when cycling is complete.

I would give this tank five stars except it was difficult to find out some things about this aquarium on the Aqueon website. To save you the trouble I'll give you what I found out:

1. Although it is listed as a four gallon aquarium, it will only hold about 2 3/4 gallons of water with plants, a small decoration and about 4lbs. of gravel. Nowhere on the package or website will you find this information. I purchased distilled water in gallon jugs, and that is how much water I put in.

2. It does not come with a heater. Again, this info was not on the package or website. A heater will greatly expand your choices of plants and fish you can use in this aquarium. I purchased the Aqueon mini heater ($15) which fits nicely in the back which hides it from view. This is a nice feature.

3. It also doesn't come with a thermometer which is pretty much necessary to monitor your tank. Small tanks like this are susceptible to temperature fluctuations due to the small amount of water compared to surface area.

4. When I set up the tank, there is no instructions or illustrations of the pump. You must connect the tubes from the pump to the water outlet. I had to search youtube videos to do this correctly.

5. You will not be able to add as many fish as it shows on the packaging, which seems a bit deceptive (I know, it's advertising). 5 or 6 small fish will be the max.

Aside from these oversights (the website and instructions offer little help), this tank has many positives. It is easy to set up; having the pump, filter and heater hidden from view is great and the cover on top is easily accessible as the LED light pivots on its stand. The pump is strong, but I like this as it adds additional movement from the plants. I love the fact that you can (and should) use live plants. I have 2 small onion plants, 2 small frill plants and a small moss ball. It looks great and the motion is an added aesthetic benefit. It looks fantastic already without fish. The filter cartridges are super easy to use and replace. The pump is fairly quiet and you'll hardly notice it is running. The blue lights that simulate nighttime is a nice touch. They also include some fish food and water conditioner. The direction sheet is easy to follow and thorough, aside from the pump and tubing explanation omitted. I enjoy this aquarium already. I would recommend it to anyone, although be aware that a larger tank would be better for beginners as this will require some weekly maintenance.

What can I say, I am a fish addict? I originally had a little 2.5 gallon tank I picked up for $13 new on my desk at work, but it was so small it was difficult to put any filtration into let alone a decent heater.

The nice thing about this little tank is that it has the filter built in and it is SILENT. The only time it ever makes any noise is if a bubble or piece of sand finds its way into the filter. If you turn it on and it makes noise, you just need to rotate the pump a little bit so it isn't rubbing against the side.

The water flow IS a little bit strong, but that can be VERY easily fixed by placing the pump on the lowest setting and putting a small $0.99 filter bag over the outlet. With the filter bag, I can easily keep a little dwarf puffer without much fuss. If you decide to keep a salt water tank (not recommended, but possible) the high flow can be a very good thing.

The light is decent and attractive to look at. I have some chain swords and a marimo growing fairly well in the tank.

The only note that I can give is that the filter is sensitive to sand. If you plan on putting sand in the tank, put a filter bag over the vents of the pump to keep sand out of it.

This is a great little tank. All of my coworkers love it and come check out my fish from time to time.

Door is a little sensitive(easily opened).... I store my supplies underneath(as was the intention) but unfortunately, any little bump against the door and it opens.. I have a dog who gets into everything..I have seen it open when the cat rubs up againts the door..To prevent any disasters, i have placed something up against the door..I am sure an outside latch would look better :o)

First, don't be concerned about the picture shown, you will get the correct 46 bow front stand. Assembly is quite easy and it's very solid, well made. It would be nice if they'd include an interior shelf option because so much space is wasted. I'm going to try and find some shelf or make one for the interior to store supplies. Other than that, definitely recommend this product.

API Filstar XP Filter Micro-Filtration Pads, 3-Count

I probably have more of an issue with the filter it goes into (the XP3); I have 3 filter pads at the bottom, stars in the middle, and a micro filration pad at the top with zorb stuff, but I still have large pieces of debris floating around the tank at times, and if it is stopped and restarted, a bunch of debris will come flying out of the output jets, so I'm not exactly sure what that's all about...

My Bio Filter(white pad in the filter)in my AQUA-Tech 5-15 got full of algae and clogged up so I decided to replace it. I bought Rena's MicroFiltration Filstar xP filters and cut them to the correct size. Works great! However on the Aqua-Tech website it says "The third stage of the AQUA-Tech® filtration is biological. The BIO-Fiber that is included in each AQUA-Tech® Power Filter provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and thrive. The bacteria then eliminate toxic ammonia and nitrites that can be fatal to fish. You should never clean or throw away the BIO-Fiber. If the BIO-Fiber becomes too clogged, rinse it with conditioned water only ." But I have also read that rocks and other aquarium decorations can also provide an area for beneficial bacteria to grow and thrive. I have replaced my BIO-Fiber without any problems, probably because I have a lot of decorations for beneficial bacteria to grow, but it doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

These filters work as described. Your fish make waste, that waste makes it into the micro-filtration pads. You remove the pads, rinse and repeat.

Tetra 77346 Parasite Guard, 8-Tablets

Tetra 77346 Parasite Guard is excellent for getting rid of anchor worms (Lerea sp.).

Reason for review: instructions on package not clear "For anchor worms ... water change".

I made 3 calls to Tetra with different answers to my questions before the procedure given below was decided upon.

TANK: 35 gallon heavily planted fresh water tank. Details of the tank setup follows the Anchor Worm treatment that I use.

ANCHOR WORM TREATMENT:

DAY 1: (The fish with the Anchor worms were 2 Golden Barbs)

Reduce the water level to 30 gallons.

Remove Filstar Biochem Zorb from canister filter.

Dissolve 3 Parasite Guard tablets in a container of fish-tank water.

Slowly add dissolved tablets to fish tank.

The fish show no signs of being affected by the Parasite Guard.

DAY 3: Remove 25% of water from aquarium.

Add aged water (same temperature as the aquarium water) to get to 30 gal.

Repeat addition of 3 tablets of Parasite Guard.

DAY 5: Repeat DAY 3.

DAY 7: 25% water change.

Reinstall Biochem Zorb.

RESULTS OF TREATMENT:

I was amazed; the blood-red spot surrounding the anchor worm holes were almost gone on DAY 2. On DAY 3 the Anchor Worms were very small. On DAY 4 it was difficult to see the disappearing worms. On DAY 5 the worms were not visible to the naked eye.

ASIDE: The Aquarium

WATER: Age city water by aerating it in 5-gallon buckets for 2 days (no dechlorinators).

FISH: Clown Loaches, Tetras, Neons, Danios, Corydoras, Otocinclus, Barbs, Rasboras, and Platies.

PLANTS: Large Amazon Sword with growth of numerous floating rooted segments, 5 Crinums, narrow leaf chain sword, driftwood covered with Java Fern and, Anubias

FILTRATION:

Filter #1: Rena XP2

LOWER BASKET; Bottom to top: 20ppi foam, 30ppi, Biochem Zorb (or activated charcoal).

UPPER BASKET; Bottom to top: bagged Seachem Matrix, bagged Seachem Purigen amid API Bio-Chem Stars, Filstar XP MicroFiltration pad.

Filter #2: Rena XP1

SINGLE BASKET. Bottom to top: 20ppi foam, 30ppi foam, 1/2 cup bagged Seachem Phosguard, Filstar XP MicroFiltration pad.

I had some internal hexamita in an angelfish/ram cichlid tank. Fish were lethargic and not eating. After the recommended treatment, everybody recovered and is eating normally again.

Note: in acidic water like my tank has, do what the manufacturer recommends and dissolve the tablets in other water first and then add the mixture to the tank water.

I have a discus tank, and, recently, I began noticing my discus thrashing their heads and darting. I didn't see any growths or anything unusual on the skin, so I suspected gill flukes.

Just simply for the money wish that this product was bigger but DEFINATELY does the job accuarately... Using this item for roughly a year now...

Better than making my own, but I do feel there are discrepancies with each bottle. I have used three bottles of this so far and this one is odd. I have my co2 on a timed solenoid regulator so I never have had to adjust it. When I used this bottle the fluid stayed dark blue for days. I have a second drop checker and put that in my tank with a different fluid and within a few hours turned bright green while the new fluid remained dark blue. I then removed the drop checker, cleaned it and added the fluid again and it too stayed dark blue. I don't know if there are batch errors or what but I can't say for sure how accurate this is now after this.
