Zoo Med AquaSun Dual Timer Custom 2 Outlet Timer Day/Night Timer Cycle

Zoo Med AquaSun Dual Timer Custom 2 Outlet Timer Day/Night Timer CycleThis was easy to set up and works well. The dial shows the night hrs in black and the day hours in white so it's easy to tell with 12 is midnight and which is 12 noon. There are little protrusions for each 30 minutes on a 24 hr circle, and to keep the light on at those times, you leave them in the "up" position, to turn light off you depress them, and then you connect the aquarium light and plug in.

There are two outlets so when you plug it in, you don't "lose" the second one that is covered by the unit. The bottom one is unaffected by the setting of the timer.

As another reviewer also mentioned, it does not keep accurate time. I got this device a few days ago and I immediately set the current time. It was 3pm when I plugged it in and 4 days later, and last time i checked it's still 3pm. I'm going to have to chuck this one. It's not worth my time to return it.

Buy Zoo Med AquaSun Dual Timer Custom 2 Outlet Timer Day/Night Timer Cycle Now

If you're planning on using this on a power strip or anything other than the wall outlet you're going to need like 4 open spaces on that power strip. It's designed to plug in vertically so it covers a few spots above it. It also sticks down so far that it covers an outlet below it. This means that if you want to plug it in to the wall outlet it will cover both outlets no matter which of the two you use. You could just plug your power strip in to the bottom spot on the timer but one reason most people have a power strip is because it extends from the wall so you don't need long cords. If the timer is all the way over at the outlet you will need an extension cord to use it. If you have your equipment right by the outlet this may work for you but for me it's completely unusable.

it is inaccurate and does not keep marked time, it will keep shifting and you will need to keep adjusting the timer. I would not recommend this product. Buy the Intermatic TN311 15 Amp Heavy Duty Grounded Timer for $10.95 instead, it keeps time perfectly. PS. it is a bit loud.

Petco Purple Cluster Silk Aquarium Plant

Petco Purple Cluster Silk Aquarium PlantSo I purchased this for my 5G tank that houses one betta (male). I also placed a few smaller ones in the tank, as well as a betta hammock. It may seem like a lot for a 5G, but its really not. I will post a pic in a few so you can see.

The plant(s) all look lovely, however, my betta, whom I have now decided to name "Brad Pitt" loves to hang out behind, and in the leaves. He'll rest in there all the time, and as of today (just got him), he just hangs in there. These are supposed to replicate a real enviro so I can understand, but jeez, come on, I wanna see you some times (just like the real Brad Pit, always dodging the media). He does pop out from time to time, but then back he goes. They are sik so I have no worries about him damaging his fins. I guess when he gets used to me, or his tank he'll swim around more. But if not, thats cool with me (they are a solitary breed). Overall, if you can, go to the store and buy a bunch, set them up, and your tank will look really nice.

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-InchThis review is for the 48" Ray2 Daylight. I have only had it in use for less than 24 hours, but will give my initial impressions.

This product is made in China and is noticeable from the packaging (plain brown box) to the vague instruction sheet and very limited warranty.

The light itself is very compact and seems to have an average build. The supplied legs do not fit on a 1" tank frame, this was not an issue in my situation, since due to the light intensity I immediately knew that I had to raise it from the tank, I have a canopy and with this fixture being very lightweight, 3 zip ties easily mounted it about 4 inches from the water surface.

I purchased this light while planning to set up a standard 90 gallon tank, I truly expected to have to add supplemental lighting to reach the low light range for some of the plants I was planning on keeping, to my surprise this light far exceeded what I had expected, it is definately beyond the low light range even with a 24" depth, to the point where I will need to either diffuse the light or add co2 and ferts to keep the algae at bay. I do have a good bit of experience with planted tanks, HO lighting and injected c02, but unfortunately I just dont have much knowledge of par ratings which would help myself or others interested in this light to determine where this will put their tank. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and am fully confident that I will be able to grow more than the orginal plants I had expected to grow.

I will do an update in a month or so after after I see how plants respond and if there are any algae issues. Hope this helps!

Update:

After about 2 months of use, I love this light. My original impression was it may have been too much light but so far I have no algae issues and am not dosing any ferts. All plants are responding well, current plants are anubius, java fern, crypts, val, wysteria, red ludwigia and tiger lotus. I did have a brief power outage about a week after set up and when the power came back on only half the strip was lit, I feared what some other reviewers had mentioned, but after turning the power switch off and back on all lights were on. Another plus, I have almost no increase to my electric bill!

I picked up one of these for my 75G tank. I've wanted to keep plants in there in the past, but the 4' bulbs just weren't doing it.

Ordered the Finnex Ray2 when the bulbs went on my old Coralife fixture, and I've been very pleased with the results.

The tank itself is much brighter now, and plant growth throughout the tank has really taken off. I'll be ordering more of these as my old bulbs burn out. Why sink the money on bulbs that last a year when you can get a fixture that will last 7+ years. Great purchase, and a MASSIVE improvement over the garbage Marineland Double Brights.

edit: after excellent initial growth, the plant growth slowed way down. The light still works great, and I would still recommend this unit, but if you're going for a heavily planted tank this may not be the best option.

Buy Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch Now

I purchased this light to replace a previous 332 watt amazon purchase that got hot enough to melt the fish tank supports.

Ordered it yesterday and it was on my doorstep today WOW!

Packaging was great. Plugged it in and it is very bright. My tank is a 150 gallons salt water with some mushrooms, anenomes and polyps. The previous lighting was 2 48" 220 watt power compact JEBO kits that worked great for about 8 years. I would say this LED light set is as bright or slightly brighter then 1 220/260 watt power compact light kit.

The light is very white like 10,000 Kelvin.

I LOVE how cool it gets, I would say it is under 130 degrees afte being on for 4 + hours.

Read Best Reviews of Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch Here

I was pretty disappointed with the unit I received. I immediately plugged it in and fired it up when I got it, only to find that half the LEDs did not turn on. Due to my location, an exchange would probably end up costing me more in shipping than this light is worth, so I popped it open. Finnex uses exceedingly low quality solder inside this thing, and in my unit some parts were not even soldered, just shoved in the casing. I spent about an hour resoldering and reassembling the unit, it works great now. In the meanwhile, you get what you pay for, look elsewhere for your LED lighting needs.

Want Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-Inch Discount?

Ordered one, received it, only half of the LEDs worked, returned it, repeat. The 48" version appears to have two LED strips from teh 24" version.

Decided to use two smaller ones instead. There appear to be some product quality issues so it would be wise to use multiple smaller lights instead of one larger light. That way, when one fails in the future, you only have to replace a smaller one.

General Finnex Ray2 Daylight info:

LED strip is about 1" per 8 LEDs. Product description shows the number of LEDs. This may be important to you because 16" version only has 10.5" of LEDs. The 30" version has the exact same LED strip as the 24" version.

Obtain the number of LEDs from the product description and divide by 8 to obtain width of LED strip.

I was not happy to receive a 16" version with only 10.5" of LEDs. I exchanged it for a 24" and I'm very happy with the 24".

Marina Betta Kit Plastic Plant, Hairgrass

Marina Betta Kit Plastic Plant, HairgrassI bought this plant five months ago for my 5-gallon aquarium that houses 4 male fancy guppies. The hair grass is soft and waves in the current from the filter. The guppies swim down into it, around it, and through it with no hesitation. I've bought a number of other plastic plants, thinking a second plant would look nice. However, they've all been stiff and/or with sharp points and the guppies will have nothing to do with them. Those plants are now in the back of a cupboard awaiting the next garage sale and the Marina hair grass remains the only plant in the tank. The suction cup is strong and adheres to the glass bottom of my fish tank well enough that it would have to be pried loose if I wanted to remove it. The fronds are soft and non-harmful to the large tails and fins of the guppies. Now that I've compared this hair grass with other plastic plants, I feel fortunate to have found it. I recommend it without reservation.

My betta is in love with this plant, & it does not rip his fins! I bought four of them and placed them all in my 10 gallon tank, and they seem to be doing well. One issue is that the suction cup and and actual plastic plant do detach from each other but can easily be out back together.

Hagen A18330 Elite Repair Kit for Elite Maxima Deluxe Pumps and Optima Pump

Hagen A18330 Elite Repair Kit for Elite Maxima Deluxe Pumps and Optima PumpOne outlet of my Maxima A-805 dual outlet pump quit working a couple of years ago, but I kept it as a spare, hoping someday to be able to repair it. I'm glad I found this repair kit on Amazon. Pet shops in my area don't sell parts for pumps anymore. This kit has everything you need to fix the Optima/Maxima pumps listed. Some of the parts included in the kit are really small (1/16"), so if you get this kit, open it carefully. It took me about 45 minutes to fix my pump and it now works like new.

This kit restored my old air pump.

It was some work to install not difficult but a little time consuming.

Restored my air pump to at least double the air output.

Penn Plax PBV1 7-Day Vacation Fish Feeder

Penn Plax PBV1 7-Day Vacation Fish FeederBefore I bought these feeders I noticed the reviews were all over the place. Some people loved them while others came home to find their fish had died. So I bought them and decided to try one out before I left for vacation. I'm very glad I did because nothing happened. While it seemed to be dissolving I couldn't see any type of food being distributed. My Beta did not have a clue as to how to eat from it because he normally chases food from the top. He doesn't forage on the bottom of the tank. After 3 days I decided to take it out of the tank and use a mechanical feeder. I think if I had just dropped it in the tank and gone on vacation I too may have come home to a dead fish. They seem worthless to me.

I bought these at a local aquarium shop to feed my bettas when I go on vacation in a couple months. I had to test it out before relying on it, so I put one of these in each of 10 betta vases.

After three days these things hadn't started to dissolve. So, I fed the bettas a little of their regular food figuring that when I am going to leave on vacation, I could drop these in a few days ahead, giving the tablets time to start working.

After another day on this trial run, I did notice the tablets starting to dissolve. I hoped the fish would eat it... But there was no sign of any of the stuff being eaten. The tablets disolved at different rates. Of the ten, a couple of them didn't seem to dissolve much at all in a week. One of my ten bettas died on the sixth day. Another looked very weak, and even after another week of normal care hasn't recovered to normal.

If I don't come up with a better solution before vacation, I will just feed them twice a day, rather than once a day for a couple days before leaving, then give them one last big feeding as I leave the house. I'll still drop these tablets in with them in case they will decide to eat some of it.

Once these things do dissolve, it just looks like colored slime on the battom of the bowl. I definitely will not buy again.

Buy Penn Plax PBV1 7-Day Vacation Fish Feeder Now

I've bought this feeder before one of my long weekends so I wouldn't have to worry about feeding my Betta. In a middle of the week I decided to make sure it works while I'm still home. I dropped it in aquarium. My first reaction was: "Why did it drown?"; Bettas are surface feeders. So, I thought, maybe the released food will float up? It didn't.

Totally useless product.

Mini Polario 10ML Low Voltage Water Pump - 1500 to 2600 GPH

Mini Polario 10ML Low Voltage Water Pump - 1500 to 2600 GPHWish their new surge pump would get out on the market after telling me for 6 months it would? This is great and although would like more flow it does circulate well with the multi-speed design. Have an old Polario and that has run for YEARS with no problems and is quiet. The design keeps it from getting clogged which is fantastic. This little one seems to do the very same thing.

A++++

Excellent Product, Performance is fantastic.

Pros: Great Wave maker, Silent, Powerful, Very solid mounting magnet

Cons: Wish the cycle of wave maker could be adjustable

Buy Mini Polario 10ML Low Voltage Water Pump - 1500 to 2600 GPH Now

I have had this pump for 4 days. This is a nice little QUIET pump. Yes I can hear a very SLIGHT humming sound as it moves water faster every 5 seconds in alternating directions-just like the product description says. For the reviews that state the pump makes a horrible sound when full speed-yes it does when you have the pump TOO close to the top of your aquarium. This little pump moves A LOT of water as it builds up momentum and if positioned too close to the water line it will suck air into the pump which causes a very unpleasant sound and produces air bubbles in your aquarium, you can see the air being pulled into the tank -a little common sense goes a long way. I have mine hanging from the glass top right in the middle of my 40 gallon breeder reef tank and there is nice water movement and no disturbing noise at all once I lowered it to the proper level in the tank. I still have one of my smaller power heads going since i keep sponges in my reef and they need lots of water flow. . .I will very likely buy another mini polario of the same size because I like the way this pump works, plug it in, position it properly ( in the center of your tank) and forget it. For my tank i wish I had purchased the fastest pump they had-then I would only need the one pump which would be very nice aesthetically. . ..I am very pleased with the water movement , The flow is great, i can see my copepods in the current when i feed my tank, the corals are waving around nicely. The pump did fall into my crushed coral substrate very briefly during routine cleaning and the pump just stopped working. When i took it apart there was the tiniest bit of sand/coral but once I rinsed it out the pump began working just fine again. The pump is compact, at least half the size of a regular power head. I give it 5 stars because the ebb and flow current it creates without having to program anything is awesome. I am a huge fan of the magnet mounting system-there is enough to maintain in a reef aquarium without having to worry about crappy suction cups coming undone, Aesthetically it's the smallest , best working pump I have ever owned.

Zoo Med BettaTherm Submersible Betta Bowl Heater 7.5 Watts

Zoo Med BettaTherm Submersible Betta Bowl Heater 7.5 WattsI almost gave up on finding a heater that actually lived up to the standards in their descriptions. Two others that I tried never went past 72 degrees, although the descriptions said they went to 78 degrees. This little BettaTherm heater is the absolute best. It stays at a consistent 79-80 degrees. My Betta, Clifford is just thriving in his 2.5 gallon bowl. He is so much more active since I put in this heater. This heater takes up no room, is flat and covered by your rocks on the bottom of the bowl. There is a suction cup that holds the cord nicely against the side of the bowl. I would say..stop looking at other heaters, this is the best out there.

The heating power of this product is way underestimated.

It says it can raise a 1-3 gallon tank 5-10 degrees above room temp. I woke up the morning after i installed it and found my 2.5 gallon betta tank at 86 degrees with a room temp of 65. I'm glad i didn't buy this product in the summer or he'd probably be dead.

Without any kind of built in thermostat you have to constantly monitor your tanks temp and plug or unplug the heater.

It might be safe for a 5 gallon but if your tank is any smaller than that this heater is too powerful.

Just want to warn people that this heater is a fire hazard. Mine was only 4 months old when today I walked out to see smoke

coming out of my aquarium. Had I not been home I don't even want to imagine what would have happened. There was quite a bit

of smoke in our home and when we were able to get our Betta out and check to find out this heater was melted. I am still shaking from this

experience and I plan on contacting the manufacturer.

I've had this heater for a few days in my 1 gallon bowl, and it certainly does well at keeping the water warm. You can't set it to a specific temperature, though, so you really need to keep an eye on how hot your water gets. My room temperature is at about 70 degrees, and this heater usually keeps the water at around 80. Sometimes, though, especially after it's been on all day, it gets up to more like 85, and that's a bit too hot for my betta.

Basically, this heater is nice to have, but buy yourself a thermometer to go with it, and don't let it go unwatched for very long.

Elite Filter Cartridge for Mini Underwater Filter, 2-PackI ordered this product along with the Hagen Elite Underwater Mini-Filter. The filter was a little too strong for my betta fish, even on its minimum setting, so I just attached one of these to the output. Now everything is well! Be sure to order one of these with the filter.

Good filter for a smaller tank, the specs say that this will work for a 10 gallon tank, I would think that this would work better for a 5 or less gallon tank. The water flow is good and the filtration is a sponge like element. No room for any carbon.

Lee's The Ultimate Gravel Vac 50' Kit

Lee's The Ultimate Gravel Vac 50' KitThis hose is complete JUNK, a terrible successor to the Python. The Nozzle never worked. I had to use a Python replacement (I found online). The connecter valves broke (leaking, and the switch completely snapped off) after 3 uses, I ordered a replacement valve and that doesn't work either! Water leaking all over. Not to mention, the hose is just more narrow enough to make drawing water a HUGE challenge. I have used the Python for years, and was told this was the exact same thing: IT ISN'T and I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO to change the water in my TEN aquariums from now on. DO NOT BUY THIS IT DOESN'T WORK. By the way: I have talked to OTHER CUSTOMERS in our local fish store and THEY ARE HAVING THE SAME EXPERIENCE. Also: THE STAFF AT THE FISH STORE ALSO ADMITS the valves and even the NOZZLE doesn't work RIGHT OUT OF THE BAG. WATER SPRAYING EVERYWHERE and they tried to sell me that white thread tape to tape the plastic cheap joints...COME ON. I HATE IT. Water ALL OVER MY HOUSE.

Fantastic for vacuuming the aquarium rocks. Hooks right up to our basin faucet in the basement. Take 5-10 minutes to vacuum our 36 gallon tank. Clean, simple, straightforward.

KollerCraft AQUARIUS AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit with LED Light - 2-Gallon

KollerCraft AQUARIUS AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit with LED Light - 2-GallonI really like this little tank. I've just finished setting it up and haven't any fish in it yet, but the tank itself is a little beauty! The lid is easy to remove if you put you finger back behind where the little cut-out for the air hose goes. However there is a little hole at the front of the lid that I think I can drop food in when I feed my little critters so I won't have to be removing the lid that much. I removed one of the perforated areas in the back of the lid (there are two of them) so the top of the little 25w heater can poke out. The color variations are a delight and I'm really pleased I went ahead and purchased this.

EDIT!!!! My tank has been set up now for almost a week. My beta is in there and happy, but, please do not buy this tank. The other reviews that mentioned the faulty light are correct. The light is now shorting out! There is water in the light. The light changes color on it's own, then the light will totally shut off, then back on, then different colors, then off again. Finally I just took the light out and will buy a new tank.

Please note, Amazon was great and tried to help with this situation. They offered a replacement, but I don't want the same tank. They offered a refund if I send the tank back, they have tried in every way possible to rectify this situation, so again, I'm happy I shop on Amazon. But please do not buy this tank, I believe it's dangerous. Water and electricity do not mix well!

The tank is just as advertised. My betta LOVES it! In his half gallon enclosure he was just sitting at the bottom all the time with his fins folded up. In this one, he's always on the move and strutting his stuff. Its really nice to look at and the different lighting modes are neat too. There's no filter so keep an eye on ammonia levels!

UPDATE: I am sorry to say I have to downgrade my initial review. I originally gave this 5 stars but now I cannot. The hood light is the worst design I have ever seen. Its is not remotely waterproof and after 2 months, not only did the nuts and bolts which hold it together rust and break apart, but water can easily get inside, just from minor spatting from the air bubbler. I noticed that the lights were flickering, so I took a look. The unit practically fell apart in my hand due to corroded bolts. There was water inside the bulb assembly. No gaskets or sealed electronics of any sort. Portions of the printed circuit board had its insulation burned away due to arcing. Being somewhat savvy, I was able to repair it, but then had to put a clear plastic condom over it to keep it dry. Just a terrible design.

Buy KollerCraft AQUARIUS AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit with LED Light - 2-Gallon Now

I just want to share my method for keeping water out of the light. Use petroleum jelly on the seams of the plastic part of the light exposed to water. It's not an accident your lights start to do wierd things. water will get in there if you dont waterproof it. I have a three gallon and a two gallon on the way. They are cool little tanks.

I love the look of the bubbles, especially under the changing color of the lights, however, I ended up taking the whole thing out, because I wanted to be able to fit a Hagen Elite Underwater Mini Filter, UL Listed, an Elite Submersible Preset Heater Mini, 25-Watt, as well as some plants. With the air tube right in the middle of the tank, I would not have been able to fit everything in. Plus, bettas don't need aeration anyway, so I figured she wasn't missing out on much.

One downside of this tank is that there is always condensation around the tank above the water level. I also don't use the feeding hole to feed her. I prefer using the hole to lift the lid with my index finger and feed her that way.

For those who mentioned having a difficult time opening the lid, you can also lift it from the back or wedge the nail of your thumb between the edge of the tank and lid, and then lift.

I read some reviews by others who have said the air pump is too loud. When I had used it during my initial set-up, I had placed the pump on top of a folded piece of paper towel and that actually reduced the noise level.

As others have said, the undergravel filter that comes with the package is not a real filter, so it is pretty much useless in my opinion. It just takes up more space in the tank.
