Oceanic 36016 BioCube Aquarium Stand
One reviewer (the only other reviewer at the time of posting) said this stand was cheap and would likely "fall over" if hit by a child or dog. I would greatly beg to differ.
The stand is made from fiberboard not to cut costs, but rather to increase waterproofing and stability. It's much easier for companies to treat a wood pulp and then press it into boards than it is to treat natural wood. The polyurethane coating on the fiber board is also very scratch resistant and adds an additional dimension of waterproofing should something spill during something like a tank cleaning. On the stability front, it's INCREDIBLY dense, which makes for the perfect medium to support such a heavy tank.
Assembly was easy and took about 20 minutes all together. DON'T OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLTS! Tighter bolts do not equal a stronger stand. The finished stand was very sturdy and looked very sharp. Keep in mind, that there may be a SLIGHT shift in the boards when moving them side to side without the tank on it. Don't be alarmed, it's meant to be this way. The stand relies on the weight of the tank to stabilize the stand, it was engineered this way. I promise Ocean knows what they're doing.Total bomb this is a disaster. If you have young ones or a big dog, forget about this stand. If a toddler pushes on side of the stand, it is going over along with 29 gallons of water. Ditto for your 30 pound dog that crashes in to it. I'm flying solo so I Gorilla glued and clamped this thing and hoping for the best. Had I been more patient, I would have bought a real deal stand.
Why a company would build and recommend this for a 250 pound anything is irresponsible.
This thing is made from particle board which is very weak for lack of a better word. Had it been designed with some bracing, it might be marginal at best to support significant weight.

I got the 29 gallon version and put it together myself. It's exactly what I wanted, extremely sturdy, looks good, and it's waterproof. Not flimsy at all. I have a Fluval Edge 12 gallon aquarium, but I got this larger stand because I wanted the extra storage capacity. With this I can keep ALL my aquarium supplies (including a large bucket) stored out of sight underneath in my living room. I'm glad I got it.Read Best Reviews of Oceanic 36016 BioCube Aquarium Stand Here
I ordered this then I read some reviews lol I know backwards. Well anyways I was a bit worried because people where saying flimsy and could tip over. I was extra carful when building to not bend anything and my unit is so solid no worries this will ever fall or tip. My large dog could put her paws up on the tank. I would be mad but it won't fall over cause of it. The directions r a little vague but still easy to figure out. Over all I would buy it again.RogerI was excited to receive this item. Once I received it, immediately when I took it out of the box I noticed scratched and chips in the finish. Upon assembly the item practically crumbled apart. It is made out of super cheep material, The kind of material Walmart uses to make their cheep brand particle board coffee tables. Which I feel I would have been better off getting. Amazon was very helpful though in making my return easy and refunded me all of my money. Not a product i would recommend to anyone though.

U.P. Aqua Shrimp Sand
Overall, it does look good and is what I would consider the only reason I haven't gave it away. Small ~1MM grains are easy for shrimp to play with, and several of my PFRs like to actually dig into it while scavenging. The reason they are able to interact with it so much is entirely due to the lightweight of the grains. Planting anything with buoyancy is frustrating without using inert weights, including Java Ferns which will "walk" around the tank at night without them in the currents. Waving a few fingers through the water and creating a current will send little black grains everywhere. Ph Buffering ability is pretty much non-existent unless you fill 1/5 of a 10G tank which wasn't a primary concern of mine as I use a 5 stage RO/DI anyways. Tested with both house tap, RO, grocery store mineral water and could not see any significant Ph buffering. There was no ammonia spike detected which is nice.
That being said, it would look incredible in a small desk nano as long as you are not depending on it to do much else than be inert. In that aspect I gave it 3 stars on looks alone, and it didn't give me any cloudiness issues to speak of. I will keep it in a few tanks, but I cannot say I am willing to spend that much again for an inactive substrate. There are much better values around here (twice as much product, actually buffer 6.5, and cost half the price). This is an exceptionally clean and attractive substrate and so far I am very impressed. It rinses nearly clear and partial water changes do not cloud the water. One bag does a 10 gallon tank adequately.I have this in my 20L SSS Grade CRS tank. Very clean, no ammonia spike detected. Perfect size. Will need a pound per gallon for good PH buffering.

JBJ Automatic Top Off Water Level Controller for Aquarium

I bought this because I was planning on going on vacation in few months and I needed something to auto-top off my tank while I'm gone. I did a few reviews on this and it works great, I'm happy I purchased it for my aquarium. When the water level drops the sensor kicks on and turns the pump on to fill the tank of lost waterRead Best Reviews of JBJ Automatic Top Off Water Level Controller for Aquarium Here
Best product out there for the price. Simple, not a lot to program two options that it). Not too crazy about the way that you set up the floaters but with some tweaking you can secure better with suction cups or even zip tie, but then again I am paranoid and I have never heard of anyone having serious issues with the floaters, oh yeah floaters are the devices that measure the eater level.....forward 1 year, found out that device is not as water proof as it should be.Want JBJ Automatic Top Off Water Level Controller for Aquarium Discount?
Bought two of these for different tanks and both are working great. The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is because the wires for the sensors need to be longer.Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Finnex 50-Watt Hang-On Electronic Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 10 to 20-Gallon
My only complaint about this model would be the very short cord (approx. 6") between the controller and the plug that goes into your electrical outlet. This definitely compromises the places you can put the controller within easy access, depending on the location of your tank and your outlets.
Otherwise, a fine, much appreciated product!Pros:
reliably maintains constant temperature
adjustable external to the tank
Cons:
warranty is reprehensible (see below)
cord is very stiff and thick
suction cups don't really work adequately
temperature control is cheap quality
instructions are sparse, translated English
First of all, it gets 3 stars because it reliably maintains a constant temperature, unlike the ViaAqua.
My main complaint is the 180 day warranty!!!. For the price why doesn't it have a lifetime warranty like the Marineland heaters? Next time I need aquarium stuff, I think I will go to an aquarium store/site.
I do like the convenience of being able to adjust the temperature external to the tank, but it is not worth any down-sides, since a decent heater only needs to be set once.
Buy Finnex 50-Watt Hang-On Electronic Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 10 to 20-Gallon Now
This heater will do the job if you have a 10 gal unit. Looks smaller than pictured, but heats very well. My house gets 67 at night an 75 during the day and water stays 78.All I could ask.If you have a Fluval Spec V (or another type of nano tank), I would recommend this heater based on my experience so far. (have been using for close to a month)The 3 best features:
1. small size with enough power to get the job done
2. the controls are on the outside of the tank making it easy to adjust without ever having to move the heater.
3. it is metal instead of glass. therefore, a lot more durable.
The reasons I did not rate 5 stars:
1. when the heating element turns on/off, the controls make a pretty loud click. This can be a little annoying at night if you are trying to sleep next to it. (all aq. heaters do this, but most are quieter because they are underwater)
2. I wish the cord length between the heater and controller was a bit longer so it would be easier to hide the controller.
Bottom line: This heater is tough and keeps the water of my 5.6 gallon tank evenly heated at 77-78 degreed F. I suspect it would have no trouble with a bit larger tank too (the controls allow form more heat than that). It is convenient to use, and very compact.
side note: the instructions say to only position the heater horizontally, but I have had no trouble leaving it vertical in the hidden pump compartment of my Spec V.
UPDATE: 2 months in the tank and still going strong. This is a good product. I have a 10 gallon tanks and it was getting pretty chilly in the night. I just plugged the heater in and it works great, it keeps the temperature steady. It has been working for a couple of months now, with no problem at all. I am very satisfied, I definitely recommend this product.

Fluval C 100g/3.5-Ounce C-Nodes
It contains enough nodes for one application. 3.5 ozs is not much. Still you need them if you buy into the Fluval system.
This package contains enough nodes for one change. I've heard from comments not to change the media all at once.
My origional media has lasted over a year without any degradation. It's not an expensive item that needs to be replaced all the time so considering the small size of the package it's not a deal breaker.

Fluval EDGE Algae Magnet
Weak magnet, if the magnet is not strong it will constantly fall off and not be effective in cleaning the glass
The string is annoying and will only lead to problems keeping it on there (I removed it on my unit after trying it on)
Just doesn't clean well mainly because it keeps falling off when swiping it across the glass (did I already say weak magnet?)
I suggest a Mag Float, that magnet is MUCH stronger and no I don't work for them or paid by them. Just letting you know what works in my two tanks. I didn't bother returning this because I already dumped the package and the price wasn't high so it wasn't worth my time to do that.
To end on a positive note, the inside surface area is larger and the outside handle is easy to hold...but like I said...it also has to work well for what it is designed for. Too bad, I wanted to like it, but can't recommend this.this magnet is nice for cleaning but does not float so if it separates it falls to the bottom. It comes with a string to fish it out but if you have anything in your tank then it will get tangled in that. Also if you were keeping it in the tank like is suggested, the string would get pretty nasty since it is like a piece of heavy duty thread. I won't be using this at all...I will be going back to the store and getting a new one that floats
Buy Fluval EDGE Algae Magnet Now
Switched to a magfloat after having this 3 days with my edge. Works great until it hits gravel. Then you are just asking for scratches. Fortunately I knew this and switched. In the edge it's just too hard to go from edge to edge to edge over and over. Even an expert loses it to flow eventually. I have a FOWLR setup. Once it his sand *poof* it would need cleaned in the sink before being placed back in the tank. The string collects algae. It does however look great and that is why it gets 2 stars. This will help to get some little annoying spots off of the interior of your tank, but there are too many design flaws for it to be worth the money or time to use. If you get one grain of sand caught on the cleaning surface (which you will, because it tends to fall down to the bottom of your tank, especially when rounding corners), you will proceed to scratch up the inside of your tank. The included string is perhaps the poorest quality I have ever seen. It deteriorates in water. I would say the only plus is that it is an aesthetically pleasing design, but it doesn't work. If anything it damaged my tank. The magnet cleaner is nice and easy to use, the pointed sides are good consideration for most corners in the tanks. This magnet cleaner is a must for algae cleaning for most small tanksSunday, February 9, 2014
Rena Air 300 Air Pump
I'm apparently slowly working my way through Amazon's stock of Rena Air Pumps.
First I ordered a 400. It was LOUD (bumped a quiet room from 40 to 46db at 1m (kind of making me seriously question Rena's 30db at 1m claims). Once plugged in, it turns out it generated no power on one side. The 400 is supposed to be two 300s in the same enclosure. I'd bought one 300 and one noise maker that didn't push any air. Fortunately, Amazon are awesome about returns.
Given the 400 was only 50% successful, I replaced it with two 300s. That way, if one was faulty, I could keep using the other one while I sent the faulty one back. It's $10 more than a 400 but keeps the tank aerated in case of issues. I'm very glad I did. Sure enough, one works well while one makes a lot of noise and can't drive air through the airlines, let alone produce the air a borrowed 200 is producing.
The lessons I'm learning here are:
1) Rena's quality is *very* variable. You can get very good ones. And you can get very bad ones. I'm running at about a 50% success rate (counting the 400 as two pumps as it is exactly that two x 300s inside one enclosure).
2) If it's running very loud or barely putting out air, even after you adjust the flow control, you likely got a bad one.
3) Decibels are an incredibly subjective measure. What does 30db at 1m recorded in a silent room really mean in your home? With a TV on, with background noise, it shouldn't be too noticeable. In a quiet room while you're home alone, expect to easily hear it through an aquarium stand and for it to be approaching the noise of a running fridge. If it's louder than the fridge and the airflow is poor, you've likely got a bad one.
4) Order in pairs so you've got something to compare to and can return one if it's noticeably louder or produces noticeably less air. Having one on its own, with nothing to compare to, just leads you to questioning your judgment.
5) Get used to the idea you'll possibly have to return a couple until you get a good one. Fortunately, Amazon's great about this.
6) If returns annoy you, don't get the 400. If there's a 50:50 chance of getting a faulty 300, you now have a 75:25 chance of at least one side of the 400 being faulty. Plus, if one 300 fails later, you've still got one pump. If one of the two 300 pumps inside the 400 fails, you've now got a loud unit to either deal with or entirely replace. This pump lives up to the hype! It is a little pricey but maybe you do get what you pay for. I'll know more a year from now. Up to this point it is a good working , QUIET pump.Purchased this air pump to replace my much older whisper pump and this one was VERY quiet. Had it now for several months and would recommend it to anyone wanting peace and quiet in their home.

I also used to buy these at PetSmart and was so disappointed they stopped carrying them (their new brand doesn't even put glucosamine in its senior vitamin treat..???). They are the only thing that's helped my 14yo male with some significant back leg issues. After they stopped being available, I put him on Cosequin for a couple of months and all of his problems came back (Cosequin is great for bladder issues, though!). My cats love treats, but they do not agree with the kidneys of senior cats. My Vet recommended this for my cat Frosty. I would give this a 5 star rating if it was just based on how much my 23 year old cat loves these treats! The description didn't give the "dosage" which is recommended on the package as 5 a day---YIKES!!!---so they don't last very long. I have found that they are a little too large for her to "grab" in one bite but you can break them in half easily enough with just a fingernail. They are a little on the stinky side but not too bad. She loves the flavor and they seem to be perking her up a little bit. She's pretty finicky when it comes to things like this so I am very pleased that she likes something that seems to be helping her. I reordered and got 2 bags this last time (I'm an optimist...we don't plan ahead on a lot for an ancient kitty like Willow lol). The seller also ships quickly.Saturday, November 23, 2013

Finnex 150-Watt Hang-On Electronic Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 30 to 60-Gallon
I assumed the heater was the same except for the controller. Either this is not the case, I got a dud, or Finnex is just not building them like they used to.I'd give this unit '0' stars if I could!
I have wasted my money on two of these units. I thought it was a nice feature to have the temperature control on the outside of my tank. Nice idea but the unit only works correctly for a very short time, (2-3 months at best). I expected allot more for an aquarium heater as expensive as this one. When the first unit failed, I thought maybe I just had a "Lemon". Now that the second unit has failed as well, I know this is what you get with this product. I was lucky to not loose any fish because I monitor the temperature regularly. Good thing, or I would have cooked my fish. THIS HEATER IS JUNK! Don't waste your money. Don't expect any help from Finnex. All they do is give you the run-around! I will never buy a Finnex product again. This heater worked fine for the first month or so after I bought it. Then it started heating my tank to 90+ degrees when I had it set for 72. It has completely lost the ability to regulate its output. Do not buy this if you would like to keep your fish from bing cooked.
