It is a round brush on a flexible shaft and cleaned what I needed it to clean. Seems to be of reasonable quality for the price. This is the best little cleaning tool for my fish tank. It is able to get into all of the little nooks and crannies. The brushes are well made and bendable.these were not what i wanted and kind of flimsy ..but its hard to tell what things really look like online or in a picture...fast service getting it though..Wednesday, June 18, 2014
API Filstar XP-S Canister Filter
The only thing I'd warn against is don't cut the plastic tubes too short. Initially we cut them to suit our exact needs, but we later changed the height of our aquarium and for the new set-up the tubes were too short to reach the top. We didn't leave ourselves any extra, so don't make the same mistake we did.

I purchased this filter from Big Al's at about the same prize as Amazon had it. It is for one of my turtle tanks, two sliders on a 40 gallon breeder with about 12 gallon total volume. After a fairly easy initial set-up (you'll have to grease the hoses with vaseline for them to go in all the way) and priming following detailed instructions (the canister is currently located at the same level as the aquarium water, making it a bit tricky to completely fill in the canister compartments), I noticed at times a gargling noise, the canister was taking micro-bubbles. Upon further inspection I noticed a small leak from the electric line outlet at the motor housing. I thought maybe I got a Dud, however, instead of returning or calling for technical support, I decided to fill in around the cable with some of my aquarium safe silicon and ...vuala, the leak was corrected as well as the noise. Now what I have is a very powerful filter (it cleaned my turtle tank in a matter of minutes), crystal clear water, nice outflow through a spraybar outlet and it's even quieter than my eheim eccho. So quiet you can barely hear a faint huming...If I didn't see the spray bar outflow, I would have to put my ear on it, or touch it to feel the vibration and see if it's working. I also disconected the tubing valve, for a test maintenance rehearsal to know that it will be very easy to do so when required. Also you don't have to prime again since the hoses seal once you separate the tubing valve from the canister motor compartment. Just lift the level, a clean, easy and dry operation. Clean-up will be a breeze. Overall I'm very satisfied with this baby, I would have given it a 5 star ratings if it wasn't for the the initial water/air leak described above (maybe a manufacturing defect on my unit). I would remommend this to a friend and I would certainly buy again. I'll have to monitor long term performance, but so far, I'm satisfied with this product. If you decide to buy this filter, consider an upgrade to the xp2 or xp3. I know I would.I have used differen canister filters in the past for my fresh water 55 gal aquarium. Fluval and Marineland. So far this one is my favorite. It runs so quiet compared to the other ones I cannot hear it at all. The only problem I had was trying to fit the hose into the tubing. It is quite a task. But one it is done, it is a filter I am the most content with.I have a 20 gallon turtle tank and it has been SPOTLESS every since I bought this product on July 10th, 2012. The filter is a bit difficult to assemble but it is totally worth it. (there are also tutorials on youtube to help you assemble it step by step) The tubes are a bit tight fitting so MAKE SURE you use some olive oil, veggie oil, or vaseline so they slide on easier. The filter is super silent and the pressure of the water coming out of can be turned up for even more cleaning power or tuned down for silence while you sleep. Hand down best turtle filter I have ever owned. There is not one speck of algae, food, or poop on the floor. Totally worth the money. This has made owning a turtle the easiest task on the planet. I plan to move up to a bigger size tank because I know this filter can handle it. I LOVE IT. Highly recommend this filter to anyone with a turtle tank under 45 gallons.Sunday, June 15, 2014

Once I finally received the product and administered the medication to my betta fish, I was dismayed to discover that not only did the medication clog the filter, but my betta fish's popeye was not cured.Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Buy Aquarius Aq12005g Glofish 2 Hex Shape 1.6-Gallon Aquarium Kit Now
The aquarium I received is actually 1.8gal so that's a bit of a bonus, but in all other respects it's not worth nearly the list price (I was able to purchase it on sale). The undergravel filter keeps the water clean, though you should use gravel or decorations from a healthy, established tank when setting this up to ensure you have the proper bacteria started. After just a week of use, I noticed that screws in the hood had already begun to rust. Also, you can't use an automatic timer to turn the light on. So far all the LED bulbs seem to work fine though I'm guessing that once they go, though I would rather have the one small standard bulb that is used on most other similar small aquariums. All in all, it's not bad but I wouldn't recommend paying more than $20 for it, if that much.

Eshopps PF Nano Overflow Box - Up to 50 gal.
Product has conflicting information. Amazon product description says flow rate is 200 gph. The enclosed instruction and Eshopps web site say 100 gph. My pump is 150gph and it seems okay.
Product is made from sturdy Plexiglas. The U-tube has little scratch on the inside surface. It doesn't seem to affect the performance.
The bulkhead size is 1.25 in. I connect a corrugated washing machine hose ($9) from Home Depot to the bulkhead secured with a cramp.
Instructions do not have any diagram. You figure it yourself (come on Eshopps. Can't you hire an illustrator or graphic designer?)
No need to siphon! Simply connect the box with the U-tube and submerge the entire thing in the water. Ensure no air is inside the U-tube and the box. Raise is up slowly while keeping the water in the box. Hang it on the tank. Done!
In case of power goes off, the U-tube will self-start. I tested this. I just need to connect my pump with a swing valve so the water does not flow back to the sump.
Overflow box does not produce any noise.Nice little owerflow but the "U" hose who goes over from the tank and in to the outside box was overbendt from the producer and broke when trying to fit it. I would prefer to have the adjusting screw at the bottom outside to be a bit longer or the "bridge" who lies over the glass to be a bit shorter, very few have 3 cm wide glass in a nanotank. Due to this I have to find someting extra to put between the glass and the adjusting screw to eliminate movement and fish gettin stuck behind the internal box.

The gravel is OK. If you want gravel that is on the darker side....DO NOT BUY THIS GRAVEL! The gravel I received was crushed and whole shell. There were no natural dark rocks to be found. When you look at the picture there are reds, blacks, grays, browns, and different shades of white shells. My 80 lbs of gravel was all white. I would have returned my purchase....but the postage to return would have been too expensive. Otherwise the gravel hasn't killed anything. All of my fish seem to be happy.Want Carib Sea Ecco-Complete Live Freshwater African Cichlid Gravel 20 lb Discount?
Carib Sea was the early Christmas present for my 55 gal. and 40 gal. African Cichlid Tanks. Glad I bought it through Amazon as the advertised price was 30%+ less than any pet store locally. It adds up when I had to use 7 20 lb. bags total! The vendor that I purchased it through only charged me a FLAT FEE of $5.99 for shipping/handling. That is a steal, considering total shipping weight was 140 lbs!Now about the product...Excellent choice as it came packaged in a live bacteria solution, making for cycling the tanks much easier and shorter. Hint if you ever have to change out substrate, it would be best to NOT rinse any of your rocks, plants, etc. They have essential live bacteria, which helps re-establish and re-cycle your tank. I was able to put all of my fish back in within a few days after set up, without any Nitrite/Ammonia spikes. I also recommend turning up your heater to 83-84 degrees F, which helps to speed up colonization of essential bacteria. It is actually safer to keep African Cichlids in this temp, as it also helps to prevent diseases. They are a hearty enough fish to adapt.
Not only does the new substrate aid in maintaining higher Ph (contains aragonite), necessary for African Cichlids, but it also looks a lot more natural, too. If I ever have to set up a new tank, or change out substrate, I will definitely repeat through Amazon and hope to get it through the same vendor, too. Big savings, great quality, and easy to use!

Laguna Aeration Kit for Ponds
I normally have to use TWO UV lights in my pond to control algae but this season I'm using only one. My trusty aeration kit has significantly reduced my algae problem and the aeration solution is the cheapest and most effective I have ever used! Nothing else in my pond set-up has changed and this is the first time in over a dozen years maintaining a pond that algae hasn't been a problem!!!)
I highly recommend this product!! But I do have one caveat: the instructions recommend a one-way valve (not included) to keep water from siphoning back into the pump if the power goes off. I was a tad annoyed that this item wasn't included in the kit but it cost only a couple of dollars at PetSmart and well worth the peace of mind.
I have a small plastic container near my pond that I use to protect the aeration
pump and my uv transformer. No problem drilling a hole for the power cord and airline (actually the hole was already there because of my uv clarifyer transformer needing protection).
I've recommended this product to all my friends with ponds. At Amazon's price of $30.00, I'm purchasing another for back-up.This pump works great. It is larger than it appears in the pic. I'd say its about 9 inches long, and about 3.5 inches high. Maybe 4 inches thick. I have a 2200 gallon koi pond and this pump makes plenty of air for it. It produces a lot of bubbles. And if you have somewhere to put it, then you can't even hear it run. I just ran a long airline, and I never even hear this pump. It is also pretty power efficient. It doesn't come with an air stone though, for actually making the bubbles. You are going to need one of the larger airstones because this pump flows a lot more air than some of the smaller ones. I would recommend the big 5 inch circular one from petsmart or someplace like that. And you need to let the stone soak for a long time before using it, just like the package says. Or else it won't make bubbles near as well. Learned that from personal experience. All in all, this pump has served me very well. I would certainly not hesitate to buy another one. It has lasted fine in the freezing cold, and in the punishing texas heat.
Buy Laguna Aeration Kit for Ponds Now
Pros:Can pump air to a decent depth. My pond is about 5 feet deep at it's lowest point and I had to weight the air-stone and drop it to about 4.5 feet or so. It kept pushing a respectable amount of bubbles at that depth, but much more that that and the output drops considerably.
Price. It's ability to pump at the depth I had it would have choked anything you could purchase at a local store at this price point. The depth will probably decrease it's usable life, but I had it running 24/7 for 4 months straight.
Air-stone and tubing is included. Nothing remarkable about the air-stone, but the tubing included with mine was much longer than the indicated 30" (inches? probably a typo, should be 30'), mine was closer to 25 feet. It's also the more expensive silicone tubing as opposed to the cheaper vinyl tubing that eventually gets hard and stiff.
The styrofoam float is a bit of an eyesore but it will keep the stone at whatever depth you need if you use it.
Cons:
In my opinion it is pretty loud at its highest setting. Not so loud that it is completely nerve-wracking (I've had smaller indoor aquarium air pumps that were louder after a while), but it's definitely not what I would consider quiet. You will notice it if you don't have a pretty vigorous waterfall or other background sounds.
If you were thinking about using it inside the home, it could probably run quite a few air-stones at the depths of your average indoor aquarium; however, the sound would be unacceptable to me in the house. I never tried to build a sound dampening box for it, so that may be a viable option.
Summary:
I used this in the hottest part of the summer to get additional movement and aeration in my pond because my bottom drain is not aerated. I think it's a little too loud for the area I have to put it in (near a seating area), so I'll probably relegate it to the far end of the patio and use it in a quarantine tank or try my hand at some hydroponics.
I think it's definitely worth the asking price, but obviously you'll need to spend much more if you need it to be quiet and run at deeper depths.Bought this to keep my pond oxygenated through the winter. Planning on housing the pump in a plastic tub with lid to keep it dry and feeding the aeration tube into the pond. Hope the fish and frogs are happy (and alive) as they hibernate! For years I would keep my pond pump running during the late fall and winter months, which meant that I had the clean the filter each week, a real pain in cold weather. I came across this product tht claimed it would provide aireation for the fish during these times of the year. This is my second one, the first lasted through two fall and winter seasons, but the power supply had lost some power. This is an excellent product and it should last me for another year or so. One thing it is important to know, you do not have to run this unit from inside your house or garage (as suggested in the instructions). Just get a plactic box (e.g. Rubbermaid) with a top, cut a hole for the air line to the pond and one for the electical cord and two holes on each side for ventalation. This keeps the unit dry and it has worked without fail 24/7 in below freezing temparatures. AT $49 or so, it is a real bargain.

Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons
Due to the circumstances described above, I decided to install two Hydro IV sponge filters in my goldfish tank to increase biological filtration. I needed something reliable and simple that would work, no matter what. As all fish enthusiasts know, biological filtration is the most important type of filtration in any tank, and using a sponge filter is the best way to establish a good bio-filter, especially when your tank exceeds its recommended bio-load.
I run mine in the simple way, with airstones, using a Tetra 77855 air pump. I have been running these for over a month now, and my fish and I have been quite pleased with the results. The water in my tank actually seems cleaner and clearer, and there are no expensive cartridges or parts to replace. It's no wonder most pet stores don't sell these as they are so economical. As long as you rinse them once a month, you never have to replace them, and there are no complicated parts. I rinse mine in a bucket of used water from my aquarium every month, and that's all there is to it. Even though my bio-load is too high, I must say my water quality is excellent, and I have a healthy, happy tank. Even my apple snails are happier. They like to crawl on the sponge, eating any particles of algae or food that get trapped in the outside.
One more benefit of having this type of filter is that it can help quickly cycle a new tank. I have a 40-long tank that formerly housed some mollies. I did a complete water change to prepare the tank to house two black moors, and I needed to cycle it. I squeezed water from my sponges as a source of bacteria, and I put this in my new tank, eventually trading one of my 'dirty' sponges with a new one to more quickly establish the new tank. After trading filter cartridges and bio-wheels in my Penguins and waiting a week, I found no ammonia or nitrites in my tank, and it was ready for the moors. I could have never done this without the quality bio-filtration that these filters provide. I now plan to install Hydro Pro sponge filters in every tank.I've used sponge filters in the past to polish aquarium water and keep baby fry from being gobbled up by the normal filtration. This Hydro IV works great and the design makes it easy to clean.
Buy Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons Now
Most aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge IV is intended for tanks up to 80 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement.
It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?
Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.
In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I use these in all my fish tanks. Very affordable, excellent filtration. The "Pro" series lasts alot longer and filters better.Want Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons Discount?
I ordered this sponge filter for additional biological filtration in my fancy goldfish tank of 29 gallons. Goldfish are very messy, so I wanted as much efficient filtration as possible. When one of my fish was sick and I was forced to take my carbon filters out of my Penguin Pro 200 filter to administer medication, this sponge filter kept my water parameters in check. (I have mine powered by a Whisper air pump.)Pros: Cheap, great for quarantine and fry tanks where you don't want a lot of suction or too much aeration, easily run by an air pump, no carbon cartridges to replace (which will save you a great deal of money), can be cleaned easily once a month in old tank water.
Cons: Very large, can be seen as ugly in a well-decorated tank.
I highly recommend these, especially for anyone with an overstocked goldfish tank!

Bottom line: I cancelled my subscribe and save order and will go back to Hikari. Sure, they're more expensive but they seem to be of better quality and my fish seem to like them.I hate spending a lot on fish food. Bought these when the price on my usual TetraVeggie Algae Wafers doubled while I was waiting to complete my order, but these don't cut it. They're half the diameter of TetraVeggie, twice as thick, looser in composition and they don't sink very well. I never find an uneatenTetra Veggie, but I have found uneaten Wardley's.I bought these discs for our mollies, but it turned out the snails liked them a whole lot more! I dropped one algae disc in to see it they were a hit or not... and it just laid there for hours. However, when I awoke the next morning, there were my two black jumbo Japanese trapdoor snails eating away at the algae buffet. It was kind of cute, almost as if they were cuddling. Actually, I think the larger one was trying to hoard it all to him/herself--but I can't say for sure.Nothing wrong with these algae tabs and the price is good, better than one would find at a pet store.Thursday, January 9, 2014

The output line for the waste is horribly placed. If Eshopps whants to learn something look at the Super Skimmer from Coral Life. Put the output line at the bottom so sediments dont just sit in there. If you want to put this in your sump dont buy it. If you want it to hang from your aquarium maybe its worth it.
