Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 296-Gallon Per Hour

Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 296-Gallon Per HourI have been a manager for a retail petstore for 15 yrs. I have extensive knowledge in aquatic life. Our store has purchased these pumps for commercial use as well as for customer purchase. We will no longer carry lifeguard products due to the lack of quality and lack of customer service. These quiet one pumps are made with plastic shafts instead of stainless steel shafts. When you have a power outage and then the power surge kicks back on the shaft cracks. When you call lifeguard they refuse to correct the problem and tell you to send it back at your own cost. A man named Neil works there and will not even consider any type of compensation for these pumps and also will not hesitate to hang up on you. These pumps will not last you more than a year the shafts will crack.I know because i have many upset customers with these pumps. Be aware that you may give this good ratings when first purchased but you will not be happy in the long run.

Worked great for my reef. It was used as the sump pump for 1 year with no problems. I took it apart a few times to clean it. It kept itself pretty clean and never clogged. It also started right up for a few power failures we had during the year. It was used in a 20g sump/refugium underneath a 29g display, with hang on back overflow. This was perfect for the filtration flow I was looking for in the sump (filter sock, baffles, low flow refugium and roughly 4 feet of head pressure). In the display I still had a little flow from a powerhead and BakPak2 skimmer. I've upgraded (but downsized) to a nanocube. If I ever get a large tank again, I will definitely get another one of these pumps.

I have owned two of these model pumps and both have died for no apparent reason. I use them to pump water during water changes and they are not on consistently, each time they died after about 3 months of intermittent use. When plugged in they make no noises or attempts to turn. Maybe they work well for people who use them in a different way, but for me personally I'm going to steer clear of Quiet Ones in the future.

Either I got a defective unit or the description of it's performance is misleading. I wanted to use it as a replacement pump in a fountain. It's described as 6.1' max head height and 296 gph. My fountain is about 4 feet high and uses 1/2 diameter tubing. No water came out the top. Placed the pump in a pail of water fully submerged and had it set to max flow. It only pumped water to a height of about 6 inches. On the Lifegard website more detailed information is given and it says it pumps a max of 175 gph at a height of 4 feet. So I'm unsure what the issue it is, but it fell woefully short of the performance described by the manufacturer and interpreted by me.

On a datasheet on their website another set of figures is given for the 1200. It must be flow rates with head heights converted from metric because feet are listed with fractions of a ft. In any case it says flow rate of 0 (zero) gph at 6.1 ft. That's a lot different than what's printed on the box! But that I can believe, zero gallons at 6.1 feet.

Returning product.

EHEIM FILTER PAD SET 2226/28

EHEIM FILTER PAD SET 2226/28Eheim Filter Pad Set work to keep my 180 gal turtle aquarium clean. The produce fits into the filter baskets as original. They are easy to rinse and reuse a time or two if need be. I have owned this filter for almost 15 years and with proper cleaning and a few minor seals that had to be replaced because the filter was disassembled and moved. I recommend this product for direct replacement for the Eheim 2226/28

To me the ehiem 2026 is the best filter, these are the pads for it. Change the white 1 month rinse the blue next month change both. Thats 2 months worth in the box. Oh and good luck finding a lower price.

I recently placed an order from Petco for two Eheim filters. My order arrived and with a much needed change of filters on my tank , I nervously opened my order to discover 2 filter bio wheels that I have no use for! I had forgotten the whole incident and had just chalk this up to bad business with a mental note on the seller . But, to my surprise some days later i receive a email from Petco with sincere apology from them with a whole new order place correctly to me. In short total redemption. They pulled through! Way to go! Alfred

Snoozer Memory Foam Luxury Pet Sofa, X-Large, Suki Buckwheat

Snoozer Memory Foam Luxury Pet Sofa, X-Large, Suki BuckwheatWe bought the small size bed for our 12 year old 25 lb. dog. He fits on it perfectly and adores it. The memory foam is a wonderful feature as it cradles his body so nicely. Our 65 lb. dog decided that his buddy shouldn't have all of the comfort-and he started curling up into a tiny ball in order to fit on this uber comfy dog bed. They would take turns day after day, until we ordered the large bed for the big dog. Now they are both happy! Worth every penny, the bed is very high quality and looks like new, nearly 2 years after we bought it. Highly recommended!

Marineland Perfecto Glass Canopy Handle

Marineland Perfecto Glass Canopy HandleHave used these before they are strong and adhere quickly great for either glass or acrylic aquarium lids. I use them on both types of covers and they do not remove once they are put in place.

Good product but kind of flimsy but does the purpose could make it a little bigger and stronger so it would not brake.

I had looked for these for some time and could not locate them. Now I have them and my aquarium is complete. They work perfectly with no issues. Easy to affix, just make sure you're certain of where you want them before you stick them down.

Not much to say about this product, other than it works great. Pull the cover off of the double sided sticky tape on the bottom, stick to your glass aquarium top and let it sit there for a few hours to properly bond. Now you have a handle for your tank.

Can be handy if you've got a really tight fit, or if you don't want a little gap at the front of the tank which you can get with the handles that just slide over the front of the glass, vs. these which stick to the top.

I bought two initially, eventually ordered another half a dozen for all of my tanks.

Vibran-Sea Flowering Broad Leaf hand Silk-Style Aquarium Plant, Large 13-14 tall, Blue

Vibran-Sea Flowering Broad Leaf hand Silk-Style Aquarium Plant, Large 13-14 tall, BlueBefore I ordered this blue 13-inch silk plant for my 26-gallon freshwater aquarium I wondered what a blue plant would look like. It is far more beautiful than I could ever have expected. It is a delicate blue in different shades with pink touches. It shows off my small colorful fish. The plant was larger than I thought it would be, coming to 3/4 the height of the tank and taking up nearly half the width of the tank. My new little colorful fish love swimming in and around the soft leaves. The plant sways in the water currents. I have never seen a silk plant this beautiful. I think it would be fine for smaller tanks of 10 or 20 gallons also. Amazon sells this for an amazing price.

My betta loves to rest among the silk leaves. The Vibran-Sea silk plant is well made and soft, so it doesn't damage delicate betta fins, not to mention it is really pretty. I highly recommend this silk plant for any aquarium! It was well packaged and was received promptly!

The plant looks good in the aquarium. I was going for a different look and this plant provided the change of place I wanted. The fish appear to like the broad leaves to hide in. Like with any silk plant one has to keep algae growth under control or else you risk permanent discoloration of the silk leaves.

Aqueon 34503 ProFlex Sump Model 4, 120-210-Gallon

Aqueon 34503 ProFlex Sump Model 4, 120-210-GallonLove the design of the pump and was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, there is a lower corner leak in the third chamber. It was a little disheartening as I had my reef tank up and running already. I already hard plumbed the sump to the display with PVC. So, if I had to return it, I would have to dismantel it by cutting the drain pipe and replacing the bulkhead. This would be a lot of time an expense. Then I would have to return the product and wait again for them to ship it back to me. I couldn't afford to wait that long as my tank was already full of water and some livestock.

So, I decided to drain the whole sump and just re-sealed the edges with silicon. It stopped the leak and hopefully it won't open up again. I know the product has a warranty against leaks. Like I said, the sump works fine now, just disappointed I had to deal with the leak.

Once I fixed the leak and Rigged the overflow panel in the first chamber it works great. Not sure if all the parts came or not.

I was bummed out over this product. Really my fault in buying it It's not that great. I threw out the "filters", they got "gunned" up in one week (expected really). The other area for use as a REFUGIUM is close to worthless. The construction I thought was flimsy way to thin plastic careful here. The tubes the provide will gunk up real fast as they are the ribbed flex tubes. Just by a cheap aquarium with out all the fancy garbage... really nothing added here folks. My bad in buying it.

Read Best Reviews of Aqueon 34503 ProFlex Sump Model 4, 120-210-Gallon Here

If you want to experiment with different sump designs, this is likely a great place to start, especially for the price. However, there are some annoying oddities. I am using it for a ~150 gallon turtle aquarium, so I have a bit of an odd usage as well. As the turtles eat just about every plant except java fern and java moss, I am running a refugium for some fast-growing plants to help with nitrate. However, I also need to run some biomedia (in my case, seachem matrix). This doesn't situation work out so well out of the box, but after some fab work, it's running well.

The Good:

1) Uses standard 4" socks. While the aqueon socks are nice, they are expensive, so it's great to be able to buy standard size socks, unlike other brands who use hard to find square ones or non-standard 3.75" and other craziness. It also lets you change micron size easily, as aqueon only seems to make one. For instance, I can run two 200 micron and one 50 micron for a couple days for some relatively quick water polishing.

2) For lower turnover, nearly dead silent. If you keep the GPH low enough using hard plumbing such that air bubbles don't form, the underwater inlet design is nearly silent. The only thing you will hear is water running from the 2nd to the 3rd chamber if you keep the 3rd chamber reasonably low.

3) Reasonably priced. Yes, the acrylic is thinner than it could be, no flame polished edges, et cetera, but that all keeps the cost down. So far it is only a fit/feel issue and not a functionality issue. If the edges are bonded well it shouldn't leak, but we'll see. I'm hoping the others with leaks were a manufacturing defect and not a design issue.

4) Highly configurable. Let's face it, a fair portion of this hobby is about trying different things or changing your mind. If you don't know what kind of sump you want to run, or change the aquarium and it's inhabitants around, it's great to be able to re-use the sump in different ways.

The Bad:

1) no room for heaters. Most people want to have heaters in the sump rather than the display tank, mounted vertically, and configured in a weir so that they do not go dry when the power to the pumps is off. The only place to do that on this sump is in the first chamber with the filter socks. This is hard to reach, very close to the socks which get tangles in the wires, and not very tall, so most of the common heaters (e.g. ebo-jager, and oddly aqueon's own heaters) do not fit. I ended up using three hydor theo 200's which gets by.

2) The adjustable wall between chamber 1 and 2 is held in place by the water force. Once the water stops, the wall falls. Not a big deal for a wet/dry filter, but if you are using it as a fuge, you suddenly have one big fuge that plants and animals can escape to. If you have a skimmer in #2, the water level change is sure to be frustrating. I ended up trimming some plastic tablecloth hold-down clips to keep it in place. A couple stainless or plastic clips would do wonders here. Perhaps I'm one of the few that turns the water off for feeding, or ever has power failures .

3) The bubble trap's overflow (between the 2nd and 3rd chamber) is too low/non adjustable. Rather than the sponge trap, which is likely nice for skimmers, I used the overflow before the return chamber to hold my biomedia. However, the overflow is non-adjustable and set really low, so most of the water was flowing over the top of the media rather than through it. I suspect the same thing would happen with the bubble trapping sponge, but I haven't tried. I ended up cutting a piece of acrylic to make the overflow taller, yet still shorter than the refugium wall so it won't flood while pumps are off

4) The return area takes up the most space of all the chambers. I suppose this makes sense for the few without an auto top off so that the pumps won't run dry on a daily basis, but I'd rather this area be used to give me more filter/refugium space or a space for heaters/equipment.

5) The inlet water tube noise reducers are sealed. Perhaps a small child could get their hand down there to clean, but no adult could. Since they are sealed, you can't disassemble them either, leaving them to attract sloughed algae, snails, and the like.

6) The incoming water tubes are small. At least for the model 4, 1.5" inlet tubes should be in place to match the flow numbers they have posted. I used hard PVC direct to them, but the reducing coupling slows the water quite a bit and makes for a lot more noise than if they were larger in the first place.

While this is a great sump there are a few things that create drawbacks to it. One the filter socks are hard to place and remove, let alone are expensive and clog quickly. Two there is no way this can handel 2200gph. I have 1450 exactly running through it and it is maxed out. Im usint two 1.5" lines feeding the sump and the 1" 90's going to it are to restrictive for that kind of flow level. Other than that its worth every penny.

Fluval Ultra Bright LED Strip Light 36", 25W Fixture (Mfg# 13572)

Fluval Ultra Bright LED Strip Light 36', 25W FixtureI have been a tropical fish hobbyist since the early 1980's. I keep strictly fresh water tanks and now I currently have a 265 gallon setup with african cichlids. Not having live plants and not needing any special lighting requirements for coral, etc.., I just wanted an led fixture to brighten up the tank. I already had two six foot flourescent fixtures with four bulbs in each fixture. I was able to see all the fish but the color of the fish especially the irredescence did not show up like I knew it could. So, rather than spend a ton of money, I thought I would try one of these fixtures and if it worked, then I could buy more. When I put this on top of the glass strip which runs along the top of the tank, I could not believe how much brighter the fish looked and how much nicer everything looked with this little 36 inch fixture. I am going to immediately order another to put alongside the one I have. this way i will cover six feet of the seven which is the width of the tank. The 265 gallon tank is over two feet deep so I need something to reach the bottom. It does this pretty well also. Even my wife who really does not bother with the fish said "WOW" I got a real nice piece of lighting equipment and am really happy with it. It has plastic brackets on the side which slide out but i have no use for them. It is ultra slim and low profile which is real nice. I have a canopy on my tank which covers the entire top including all the lighting fixtures and makes it look more like a piece of furniture. I would highly recomend this light to anyone thinking about getting one.

Super Feeder ASF-1 Aquarium Feeder with Analog Timer (style may vary) Smoke Color and Holds 4 and 3

Super Feeder ASF-1 Aquarium Feeder with Analog Timer Smoke Color and Holds 4 and 3/4 Cups of PelletsI bought this item because I was going on vacation and wanted to spare my relatives the bother of feeding my fish. I liked the fact that this feeder has a large hopper which will allow me to feed the fish for the extended period I am away. Given its size and the number of feedings I have programmed, I expect I could be gone a month and not run out of food. (I have a 39 gal. tank with about a dozen fish.)

In any case I got it early and set it up on my tank to make sure it would work properly and therefore tried it out for about 3-4 weeks before I went on vacation. It seems to work as advertized. The only problem I encountered was that the hopper extending into the tank tended to fog up with the tank hood completely closed. When it fogged up, the food got stuck to the hopper and as time went by it totally clogged up. I solved the problem by propping the tank hood open about 3/4 of an inch, which allows the vapor to escape the tank and so now it does not fog up. Again testing it for about 2 weeks in this mode it seemed to work fine and the food did not stick to the hopper. I am now on vacation and only time will tell if the fish feeder did its job. Hopefully I'll return to well fed and thriving fish.

I used this product to feed a 10 pound cat dry food morsels. I used the feeder for exactly 1 year (before the cat died). My cat was an obsessive eater. She would make our lives miserable by begging, rather attacking us for food; waking us up 4 hours before breakfast and purposefully ruining anything we were doing 2 hours or more before dinnertime. We had tried two other automatic feeders during the previous 10 years and she had broken into the two other automatic cat food dishes in no time (one she broke into within minutes). She did not thwart this feeder, she really only tried twice to break into it but gave up fairly quickly and never tried again. I had purchased the chute, which is an accessory, which may or may not have been needed to thwart her attempts. The feeder, itself is much smaller than the pictures reveal, which is a good thing.

I had the one hopper (it comes with) and purchased one additional "hopper extension." So, my feeder had a total of two square plastic "hopper" pieces. With the hopper and one hopper extension, I only had to fill the feeder up once a week, which was an unexpected liberating bonus. It was incredibly nice not to worry about twice-a-day feedings or even filling up the feeder daily (unless the power went out).

Generally, a problem with any hopper style feeder is you can only put one type of food in the machine, so they are eating only one flavor/brand all week. (We tried layering foods, but each food was different in size, so that did not work with this feeder.) And a specific problem with this feeder, for cat food, was it took about 10 minutes to set the hopper each time the morsel shape of the food changed (to unplug it from the timer, move it away from the cat, and actually set, test, reset, and retest the amount dropped). And to set the feeder, it required a high level of precision, since one tiny movement of the setting, altered the amount of food it would drop dramatically. Then, once I set the feeder with the precision of a watch maker, the amount of food dropped each feeding was inconsistent. I was required to set with precision, but the feeder dropped within a range of amounts. Generally, by the end of the week, I liked to think each feeding averaged out to the correct amount (of a 1/2 cup per day).

I also found that when the hopper was full/near full or it had 20% or less left in the hopper, it dropped out a lot more than it was set to drop. When it was only 20% full, the feeder ran the risk of dropping every morsel of food remaining in the hopper. I just learned to keep it 20% or more full. When it was full or near full, the weight of the food in the two-piece high hopper seemed to push a greater amount of food out (than it was set to drop).

The feeder did work, in that the cat could not get into it, it fed her sufficiently, and within a week of owning the feeder, the cat learned the feeder fed her and not us, so she quit waking us up daily at 4AM for 8AM breakfast or aggressively begging for food and annoying us 2 hours before dinner daily. The feeder did separate us from the food in the cats' mind, which made our lives unbelievably better. The last year we had the feeder with her, our lives improved tremendously. Glad we bought it.

Marineland PA0401 Aqua-Timer with 24-hr Cycle, Grounded

Marineland PA0401 Aqua-Timer with 24-hr Cycle, GroundedI was using these timers to control my 9W UV sterilizer and T5 HO lights. The timer with the UV sterilizer caught fire. I have posted some pictures in the customer image section. I am really fortunate that my house did not burned down due to this incident. But there was soot everywhere and it took us hours to clean this up. And the burned plastic smell lingered around the house for days. And my poor wife, who did most of the cleaning, complained of sore throat for couple of days. When I contacted Marineland about this incident, they told me that they would gladly replace the timers but nothing more. You have to be kidding me. If you decide to buy one of these, make sure you have at least a smoke detector near the fish tank.

I have just started to use this timer, and I see from some of the reviews that there is a quality control issue that is possibly a problem. I will report later on it after I have used it awhile. But first impressions out of the box are a full 5 stars. I will also say that am I not using it for an aquarium purpose, but instead to run a fractional horsepower domestic hot water circulating pump in my house. The three pronged grounded outlet, and relatively high amperage rating of 15 amps enables this device to be used for a much greater load than aquarium lights, so with the excellent design of the face and plug-in receptacles, I decided to use it for my hot water circulator.

I was first impressed with the layout of the plugs and timer face. It is very well thought out and the timer can be inserted into an electrical outlet without encroaching on the other outlets. The next feature that I appreciated was the use of highly visible black markings with a very crisp font against a white face. This makes reading and setting the timer the easiest I have ever encountered. The "time of day" indicator is a bold black triangle which is highly visible. In addition to clearly showing the times of day on the universal 0-24 scale, it also shows the night time hours as shaded for additional clarity, and has a large directional arrow to tell you which way the dial is rotating. This, and the time of day marker, are visible on the face of the dial from some distance.

Time increments are 15 minutes, and are set on or off by depressing small gray tangs which are located around the rotating clock face. The tangs are very easy to set with a pointed object like a pen, and have a large range of movement when depressed, so again, very easy to see what times you have selected. With the 15 minute interval between tangs, you could conceivably have many on-off cycles per day (one every 15 minutes), or as few as 2, or none. It also has a manual override switch on the top, which enables the user to bypass the clock feature and have it always "on".

Which brings me to the only thing so far that I do not like about this timer the marking on the manual override switch on the top. The switch slides between the right and the left, and when moved to the right it reveals a symbol of clock, and to the left a symbol of solid black line (presumably for a completed circuit to be always on). But when the switch is moved to the right and the clock symbol is displayed, the timer is actually on a manual "always on" setting. To the left with the continuous line displayed, the timer operates on the time clock. So the markings are exactly opposite from what the user would expect. I will fix this by marking the sliding switch with a permanent marker to indicate which state it is in.

The timer has a UL stamp, which means is has undergone strict testing in a lab for electrical safety, but of course this is no absolute guarantee against poor quality control from the manufacturer.

On balance, and for the price, I would highly recommend this product.

UPDATE, June 3, 2011: The timer has now been in use for some time now, and has performed flawlessly. No problems to report, and the above review comments still stand.

UPDATE, February 12, 2012: No problems, review comments still stand.

I needed a timer for the light above my turtle's aquarium and I'm glad I chose this one. It has the fittings for a three-pronged plug, unlike other timers I've seen. It works great and it's silent. In fact, I thought it was broken at first because it didn't make any noise. Lastly, it doesn't block the other plug, unlike other timers I've seen.

I had this crappy timer for one day. It worked just fine for the first day, then the next it ended up blowing out my aquarium light (the aquarium was a brand new setup.) And, the timer stopped working the second day.

The directions are confusing and it is not a well made product. Do yourself a favor and buy a Brinks timer instead.

Want Marineland PA0401 Aqua-Timer with 24-hr Cycle, Grounded Discount?

This is a simple all-mechanical device that nonetheless fulfills its mission quite nicely. To use it, one first sets the current time. The entire face works as the clock and completes a full circle every 24 hours. On the edge are 96 tabs, one for each quarter hour. If a tab is pressed into the down position, the timer will leave the power on during the corresponding 15 minutes, so theoretically this timer can turn an appliance on and off 48 cycles in a day.

I use this timer to control Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System. It works well after a straightforward set-up process. My only complaint is about the pass-through switch that can turn off the timer and leave the power on all the time. Somehow, the manufacturer decides to associate the position when the switch covers up the clock symbol and displays a straight line (presumably for "pass-through") with having the timer function on, and vice versa. This seems to me just totally counter-intuitive.

Catalina Titanium Heater 300 Watt

Catalina Titanium Heater 300 WattA very accurate thermometer, however, I took a star off for the large profile of the plug, and resulting tendancy for it to come our of my powerstrip more frequently than I would like.

i try so much brands of heaters and i must say my search ended wen i came across this catalina brand.

2 years now and the heater works like a charm.

This heater works great in my 55-gallon marine tank. It didn't take long to heat my tank and it is pretty accurate. I will only buy titanium heaters after almost being electrocuted by a cracked glass heater (for some reason the GFI didn't trip).

It would be nice if the power cord for this heater was a foot longer and also the directions state that the heater is only to be mounted horizontally, I would prefer the option of mounting it vertically also but this is not a big deal.

I have been so happy with this heater that I've bought 3 and considering a fourth. After having a standard plastic submersible heater crack leading to electrical shocking of my 2 turtles I needed a replacement. Using a quick fix with some old glass heaters turned out to be a bad idea as those shattered either during water changes or by my rambunctious turtles. This heater has been a great solution and definitely worth it. I would recommend it. I haven't noticed any problems thus far.
