I have a really adorable halfmoon butterfly betta, and ok I admit, it's a little spoiled...but it's reeeally pretty and I love it lots n lots!! I noticed it would half-sleep or half-veg-out in a particular corner, but that it had to keep fanning its fins and its tail would start sinking, then it'd have to fan again to get itself back up. It wasn't sick or anything weird, it's just that it requires energy to stay in place in the water. All of the plants in my new aquarium, are too short, you see...

Sooo, I got a whole bunch of these because they were on sale at my local Petsmart, and I put them here and there, and a lot of them about 1/2 cm from the surface of the waterline. This made a little multi-tier leafy land of green, and now, my betta just chills out when he wants to, on the leaves. =) He seems to like it there, and though he swims around then perches on one, then swims under them, over them, he also spends time just lounging about the leaves too. I think he really likes it. On the ones closer to the surface, he makes all these bubbles. He's got two bubble nests going at the moment, and it's a pretty cute bubble collection.

These leaves have a plastic-covered wire are bendable so you can get _just the right angle_! It's like your shoulder; it's a ball-and-socket joint basically. It doesn't fall off, and it rotates just fine, AND is pose-able because of the wire on the inside of the plastic. These leaves are also smooth so none of this snags the betta's beautiful fins; I tested this out with the string test (I do this with all of his toys). Plus these leaves are really easy to clean. I rinse them off, and use a Q-tip to clean the little suction cup dent that the leaf pops in to. If you're tryig to stick these above water, you should WET THE SUCTION CUP FIRST, so it has suction, CLEAN THE AREA you are going to put it to (only if it's above water), and then it will stick well. If your tank is a bit slimey or slippery due to algae, you should also clean a small area first so you can stick it on properly. Sometimes, if you buy these and leave them in the car, they become oddly formed. To fix this, just nuke ONLY THE RUBBERY PART in the microwave for about 2 seconds at a time till it becomes slightly soft; not mushy, just move-able. Then set these on glass face-down and let it cool to its correct shape. Also, look for when they are on clearance. I got them for $2.25 each on clearance and bought all of them that were being sold, because I super loved the first one I got.

These leaves are awesome, and allow me to just have a mat of really low maintenance plants (*morimo balls*), glass shrimp, little rock caves with dwarf baby tears growing on them, and then just these leaves here and there. I also have one snail. It's a super low maintenance tank this way, but these leaf hammocks allow for my betta to really use different levels within the water that it didn't really do much with before, and it adds a bit more color. =)

I tried this out with a female betta and she couldn't care less about it. My male betta on the other hand LOVES it. I have better luck putting it in a dim area rather than bright part of the tank. Much better bet than the betta logs in my opinion. Pick up a few of these and you can create a swim through and rest area.

I bought this because I noticed how often my betta would prop himself up within the foliage of his little fake aquarium plants. The thing is, he wouldn't rest there for long, because for bettas it's easiest to breathe near the surface. His plants weren't tall enough for that. No he uses this often, especially at night after the aquarium light timer goes off. I think it may be just a bit too bright up there for his preference when that's turned on. Most mornings, I get up and he's still perched there (light or not) and doesn't really get up and about until he sees large movement. It is pretty cool to see, and I like to think the fish is comfortable and content when using it. It's just right!

The product looks just like the images. I received mine with a crack but it was packed carefully so I'm not sure what happened. The crack didn't matter since I have a 36 gallon bowfront which has a divider on the top. I had to split the background in the middle along the crack so it was good that the crack was there. Nothing a little marine silicone can't fix. The foam is black and will make a fine powder mess if you decide to cut. Have vacuum ready if you cut. The fish are at peace due to the natural surroundings. Great product.

Marineland LED Aquarium Kit

I bought this product at my local pet store, and thus far, have been happy with it. Marineland's 20 yr guarantee is what sold me--had been debating. Out of the box I was missing a 'lens', the clear part the light shines through. Called marineland customer service, and without too much difficulty, they are sending one out to me. Had to find the 'reorder part number', customer service rep sounded like had a very wide commercial and home product list, hard to pin point what I needed otherwise. About a ten minute wait to get to customer service.

Powerful bio-wheel filter included which was a real plus and helped me decide to go with this model. LED's are definitely cool, especially in night mode. A little concerned about corrosion--there has been some moisture gathering on LED light boards. I think the problem may be that the 'lens' is a snap-in model and is not sealed to prevent water vapor from reaching the lights. I put the light fixtures in gallon ziploc bags until I can figure something else out. Think I'm going to try using some aquarium sealant around the edges of the lens and see if that solves the moisture problem.

Hood otherwise seems pretty sturdy, though not impressed by the hood/tank clips to hold the hood on. Directions are a little unclear, and snapped off a piece inadvertantly before I got the hang of it. Overall, a good unit for the money, and almost everything you need to get started in one box. I'd buy again and/or recommend.

i bought this tank kit from a local petsmart store in february 2012 for $200. got it home, unpacked it and set it up with really no problems at all.

all the hood, filter, and trim parts are plastic. the filter is the bio-wheel penguin 350, which holds a double filter and biowheel setup with adjustable intake. the filter is generally quieter than average for kit systems, and i am very pleased with it so far.

the led lighting comes from two led panels, one on either side of the split-hood. they are removable and come with detachable power cords. they are surprisingly bright, and provide a nice shimmer effect into the tank. however, they do not provide suitable light energy for a planted tank so don't expect to get good plant growth. there is also a night-light setting of a half-dozen blue led's on each panel. the lights do not have a timer option, but instead a 3-way manual switch (white, off, blue) on each panel.

the tank also comes with a generic 200-watt heater and temperature sticker. the heater is not marked in degrees, but that's what the thermometer is for :) they seem to work ok, but i bought a different thermometer to replace the one in the kit. there is also a startup pack that includes a small amount of tropical fish flakes, a net that's far too short to catch bottom-dwelling fish without getting wet up to the elbow, and a small amount of water conditioner. there are no decorations, gravel, air pumps, or other items included.

i am generally satisfied with my purchase. i let the tank cycle for a week before dropping in a couple danios and platies. if i notice any issues with components wearing out early or breaking too easily, i will come back and update this review.

***UPDATE***

after a year, the tank is still holding out very well. nothing has broken or fallen apart, except for the suction cups that were with the heating element. the clips deteriorated and fell apart within a couple months, but i bought some replacements and they've worked just fine. all the led's still work, and the filter is still churning away.

i can definitely say this marineland tank is a keeper.

Cat Mate Elite Super Selective Chip and Disc Cat Flap

Our cat has 2 RFID chips in her. One for America and one for international. The cat door can't figure out what to do, so it defaults to locking her outside until we get home from work. We put it into "Training Mode" so she can come in and out, but it's not doing what it's supposed to do. Thinking about returning it for a refund.

Took me an hour to figure out the manual with all special info in the multi language instructions.

After I got it figured out, I set it to the first cat, then it died. Bought it for my Mom. Cut the hole in the wall. Should have check to see if it worked first. My bad. Mom had the cats chipped. Worked great with the first one. After I figured out where the program button was. The instructions are very vague. Don't think I'll be buying another one of these. Propably go manual controls next.

One more thing. I purchase the wall extensions and now I can't return them. First time this happened to me with Amazon. I'm disappointed.

I paid extra for this product because it claimed to work with vet-implanted RFID chips a nice feature since cats are famous for losing their colars. But the sensitivity to the new implants is so marginal that only by stuffing the cats into the entry and scrubbing them around for 10 or 20 seconds (like scrubbing the bottom of a glass wth a sponge) was recognition obtained. After much hissing, scratching, and bleeding (me) I managed to get recognition programmed but there was no way the cat was ever going to gain entry on its own.

The device works very well with the Cat Mate Electronic Collar ID Discs but I could have saved a $100 vet bill, bought a $50 cheaper model, and saved another $40 for two discs (supplied with the cheaper model but not with this one).

Programming is so non-intuitive that I've attached a storage pocket on the door above the device to keep the instructions handy and never misplace them.

On the up side, my two cats now have collar discs and thoroughly enjoy their new-found empowerment.

Cat Mate Wall Liner

This doesn't fit the Cat Mate Electromagnetic Cat Flap. The liners connect to each other, but to neither side of the Cat Mate door. Hence you are left gluing and/or cutting to try to make a fit. Neither is acceptable. I had expected to get a liner which slid over the door opening to create a nice fit, but that's not at all what this product is. (Granted the product description does say this product isn't designed to fit the style of Cat Mate door I bought, but Cat Mate doesn't sell such a product.)

With one or more installed, it's virtually impossible to reach the control knob of the Electronic Cat Mate Door. They need to create a the liner the same size as the whole Cat Mate Door (not just the opening flap); or one with a way to control the knob after installation. Furthermore, instead of instructing the user to cut it down to size with a saw and use glue, there should be several small sections so each can connect together to form whatever length liner is required.

All-in-all, this is just a poorly designed, over-priced product. I love my Cat Mate Door and have owned two over the years, but this thing is crummy by comparison. If you have the capability to install the pet door in an outside wall, you surely have the talent to put together something a whole lot better than what this product provides.

***UPDATE***

After doing a whole lot of cutting, filing and gluing, I managed to make this liner work (sort of). It falls far short of what I had expected, but I did manage to get it to work. However I still stand by my 1-star rating due to the poor design and price. IMO, $10 per liner is a ridiculous price for a small piece of rectangular plastic, especially when you'll need to buy two of them to fit through a typical outside wall, then need to cut them down to size for a proper fit for the product this was supposed to be designed for.

Besides the fact that we have to prop it open for the cat (she refuses to go through it open unless she's IN the laundry room and needs to get OUT), this has worked perfectly. We put this in the wall between our family room and laundry room in order for her to access the litter box. Most cats would be able to open the door, but I have a calico who only does what SHE wants, and that is NOT going through a cat door.

NOTE: I do recommend that you measure the depth of your wall to make sure you don't need this extra piece that fits between the two walls. Our wall is is thinner than most, and we needed a 1/4 inch extra, even with this piece to fit between the two (we filled it in with white duct tape, but I do not recommend this option. I am too cheap to order another extra piece).

Pros: looks so much nicer and easier to clean than white duct tape

Hooked this up to the Danner 04520 1700CUIN AP-20 Pond Air Pump in place of the diffuser that came with it, and am very pleased with it. It's so easy to place in a deep pond with the net filled with gravel, and it generates tons of bubbles. My pond is crystal clear and fish appear happy and healthy.

It works alright. I have it on a Pondmaster (Danner) AP-20 at a depth of 2 feet, and maybe 8 feet of hose. It just seems like there should be more air coming out of the ring. I previously had the diffuser that came with it, on 3 different 6 inch air stones and a ton more air came out of it.

Rio Plus 2500 HP Aqua Pump, 782 GPH

Just wanted to update everyone on the pump. As of 4-4-13 it is still running great, with no noise. Don't hesitate to purchase this. Same product local fish stores are selling, only cheaper.

I ordered the Rio Plus 2500 HP Aqua Pump for my 90 gallon pre-drilled fish/reef tank and have had it running about 1 month. I did a lot of research, which included calling local fish stores to see what they recommend. For the quality and price you can't beat this. The only small problem I had was it was a little to large for my wet dry when I had the bottom plate on with the suction cups. I removed the bottom plate and suction cups and set it on the bottom of the wet/dry.I didn't want any noise so I placed a piece of the filter sponge (About 1/4 in thick) under it and what do you know "No Noise". Also, don't worry about pressure, because it pushes the water great through the tank. So much water movement, it is moving my sand around. This is an excellent product.

This pump is a little bigger than I expected, but. It has a heart and soul and it has a good amount of flow even with 4-5 feet of head on it. I bought two, and one is pushing just fine against nearly 8' of head and delivering water.

I needed to fill a swamp cooler from a clean water reservoir on a regular basis and it will move what water is needed in a moment, no more muss fuss or bucketing. And no hesitation or feeble trickle at 8' of head.

I have also set up a multi unit stepped goldfish holding/breeding setup with 100-300 gallon units (5 and climbing)and a barrel filter plus an end pond holder with plants of around 600 gallons and one is easily delivering the water from one end to the other with excellent flow and turnover against about 4-5 feet of head. I did have to fit a custom made mesh (7 holes/inch) 'strainer basket' on the intake to slow down the water speed at the surface of the basket (not restricting my inflow) and catch some of the loose (algae and other detris) material and prevent a fish from being vacuumed to the intake... but this pump is doing an awesome job.

The number of attachments included looks like 'what the (bleep)' but I was very grateful when I started assembling and found things like the garden hose attachment.... that is one great plus. A very large number of items to tailor intake and outflow to whatever task you need to set it up for is a very BIG plus with this pump.

I have not seen what my electric bill will be for running two of these but I am sure it will be a lot less than what I was using before that were also not as powerful in output and much bigger.

I am a little worried about the impeller but it seems to be well made and putting out. Time will tell if they will stand up.

For the money this is a (deleted) um... heckuva ... pump.

this pump is very quiet and and when its on it has great waterflow however I wouldnt buy it again bcause I have only had it for 2 to 3 wks and I have had to unplug it 2 timeseach time I had to unplug it it was hard to get it to get going againmy husband had to take it completly apart and put it back together to get it to come back on now I feel like I need to have a pump for backup because it seems this one could go out at any minute I have it on a 55 gallon reef aquarium and cant afford for it to go out but there are times when I put say an anenome in my tank that goes missing and I'm afraid it is going to get sucked up and want to be able to unplug the pump for a minute you cant do that with this onewhen it happened I googled it and found that is a very common problem with this pump-I am going to spend the extra money and get an Ehim

I ordered this item along a similar product, Exotic Environments Stick Up Aquarium Ornament with suction cup back "Red Sea Reef with Brain Corals". Please note that the product featured on this page has a flat side that is intended to snug up against a wall or flat surface. Nice color and the suction cups seems to be pretty strong...it stuck on the wall of my tank without slipping even before the water was added. Keep in mind that these pieces are kind of chunky...almost as thick as they are wide. Wish they were a little larger and maybe flatter to cover more of the surface of my overflow box without sticking so far into the tank. Even so, they are a neat accent piece and I will probably be looking for a few more like it to decorate the back wall of my tank.

I like the fact that it is quiet and that I can purchase replacement parts if needed.

Jungle TB640W Tank Buddies Correct pH, 8-Tablet

This stuff's label doesn't say much about what it does. Does it raise the ph, or lower the ph? Is it just baking soda or calcium carbonate in a fizz tab? It seems to have added a little bit of alkalinity (buffering capacity) to my tank and pushed the acidity from 6.9 to 6.8 further away from center!.

One tablet in a fresh tank will cloud the water for days. A tablet in an estableshed tank will cloud the water if the ph is not too far off from where this stuff wants it to be. There is no patent information available on it, and there is no more information on the product website than on the product packaging. I would rather stick to products like ph+ and phto resolve specific issues with ph than to have a mystery tablet that advertizes like it handles things either way.

I suppose if you did have a big ph problem, that this stuff probably could help. But I wouldn't include it in regular maintenance routine unless your tap water comes out with the acidity of a soft drink.

I wish that companies who market 'simple fix' products like this to the general public would not disrespect us so much as to hide how the product works... Marketing on the front of the pagkage & explanation on the back. All we get here is marketing & auto-magic hype.

Tried these for lowering the pH in my fresh water aquarium, simply put, doesn't work. Tested water directly from faucet and pH was around 7.6 and after adding 2 tablets to a 20 gal aquarium, pH is near 8!!! These tablets are useless, stick with something you can read a label on the packaging that describes contents & remedies. Directions do say you may need to soften very hard water first, don't know if this would've made a difference or not!? I'll be buying something else from now on.

These helped lower the PH in my aquarium. What I liked about them, is you could add the number of tablets required which disintegrated quickly. They were easier to handle than messy measuring spoons.

I will not claim that this product works for everyone (in fact if you look at all the reviews, you will see some that claim this PH corrector does not work) but it did work for me. The PH in my 20 gallon tank used to be on the low side around 5.2 to 5.6. I placed 2 tablets (1 tablet per 10 gallons) inside a cup filled with water from my auarium and let sit for a few minutes while it dissolves (I don't recommend placing it directly in the tank). I poured the water into my tank and after a couple hours or so I tested again and the PH was between 6.5 and 7.0 which is much better than where it was. For me the effects lasted for quite a while not sure how long but definitely more than a couple days or so. I'd say maybe a month? Anyway this product worked for me and if your PH is a little high or low I'd recommend trying these. I'm not sure how well this stuff would work if your PH is off by a lot though. But I thought an increase from 5.2 to 6.5 to 6.8 was pretty good! I plan on buying these again.

Marina CUBUS Glass Betta Kit

0.9 gallons is way too small of a space for a betta to be happy. Get a 5 gallon, heater, hood and light, and a betta hammock. Give him some plants (silk or real because pointy fake plants can injure him) and some gravel. Put a ghost shrimp or two in the tank with him to help keep his area clean. Then you have a happy betta. This tiny thing isn't the best choice.

As other reviewers have commented this tank is much too small to create a healthy environment for a Betta. While it is initially aesthetically pleasing the small size of this tank simply leads to stressed out fish, whom quickly loses their colour, and shortens their life span. If you're the kind of person whom values appearances over the health of your pets, than I doubt this review will change your mind. However if you genuinely care for the well being of your pets please select an alternative tank (Around 5 gallons, like the Fluval Chi).

This tank is entirely too small for a beta (or pretty much any fish, for that matter). These guys need at LEAST 5 gallons of swim space. A beta in a tank this small will get stressed out which greatly increases their susceptibility to disease, and ultimately, an untimely death. Do yourself a favor and buy a 5 gallon tank that costs less than this thing and enjoy your beta for much longer.

This has grown algae as if it was made for it. It's really hard to clean. It looks kind of cheap in the tank too. It's pretty big, bigger than I expected. It needs air holes in the top so that when you take it out the the air won't get stuck. The cichlids I bought it for don't care for it.
