I was going to give up on my aquarium. I have a 60 gallon planted tank and the algae was getting out of control. My best efforts were doing little. As a last-ditch effort I went to the store to see what might get rid of the algae. I wanted to avoid a "chemical" solution but had run out of ideas. I noticed AlGone and thought I'd give it a try.

For a few weeks I didn't notice much, though I kept swapping the pouch every five or six days. But over a month or so the algae began a retreat and then pretty well disappeared altogether. It's now several months later, I haven't seen any in ages. I still have to clean the glass once a month, or so, to get rid of some hard stuff on the glass, but the algae on the plants and everywhere else is just gone. Best of all, the tank no longer smells like algae (or anything else, for that).

This stuff works!

I used this product several times to lower some really high nitrate levels in my tank. It does a pretty good job. The only thing I don't like is that you have to replace it every 5 days which means shutting off my canister filter and opening it up and replacing it. That's the only down side to it.

After about a week or two it stinks like fish poo, and when it smells like that I throw it away and put a new one in. My tanks have been a lot cleaner with this product. btw, the large is supposed to be for large aquariums 125 gallons and over, but I use it in my 24 and 46 gallon planted tanks.

The Ghost House looks ok in the tank, but it's cheaply made upon any kind of inspection. I don't really own the kinds of fish that this was made for, so I can't speak to how knife fish, etc will take to it, but my small goldfish liked playing in it and my pleco used it every once inawhile. No tears were shed, though, when one of the legs broke while I was pushing it back down into the gravel one day. It went straight into the garbage and will not be replaced.

Coral Vue Technology AC20284 Octopus Needle Wheel Skimmer for Aquarium Filter, 4-Inch, 100-Gallon

For a beginner:

If you are new to protein skimmers the first thing to know is that you generally want to divide the "gallons rated" value by half. So this 100 gallon skimmer will best work for tank up to about 60 gallons.

Also, this is an in-sump skimmer meaning that it needs to be in a separate aquarium to do its job. It cannot be placed outside on a surface and always needs to be submerged in water. There are 2 water lines on this skimmer... the min water line is just about where it says "reef octopus" in on the acrylic tube and the top water line being just under the large black band under the collection cup. To give you an idea, this means the skimmer should be in a water level between ~6.5-10" of water when operating.

It's pretty easy to put together and don't expect much instructions from the manufacturer. LIke most marine products you have to look on message boards often to find support. Once put together, there is a red dial to adjust the bubble level in the skimmer so it collects the ideal amount of waste. There is no set amount the dial should be turned, you must play around with it for a few days to figure it out. On normal operation you should have to empty the collection cup about once a week.

A couple of issues with this for me was the skimmer just didn't skim as well as I would have liked it to, after playing with it for months now I still think it could do a better job at removing the junk from the water. Also, I wish that it would be easier to disassemble for cleaning purposes because it can get quite clogged and it's a pain to clean.

Final advise: shop around when looking for saltwater tank products online. Amazon many times does not have the cheapest price and you can find this and many products elsewhere for 25-40% cheaper.

A nice sturdy light for the money.

It does have a few drawbacks as already reviewed, namely the fact the power has to run through a timer (which is included) as there is no off/on switch for either tube.

The ballast itself is quite sturdy, more than I thought it would be for the price when compared to more high-end brands.

The brackets that attach to the aquarium to hold up the light are not as sturdy as I would like for such a heavy piece balanced over water.

Also, the product description doesn't fully spellout the right size bulbs you have to buy, as they are NOT included. I bought the 36" system, but it takes 34" bulbs.

A very good value for the money. I have mine over a 45 gallon tall, freshwater, planted aquarium and the light penetrates to the bottom quite evenly.

I would buy another as I feel the price is very good for the heavy-duty construction of the actual fixture, as long as you know the above mentioned quirks.

I might also note there is no lens cover included if this matters to you.

Had this lighting setup for about 2 years, which is not bad, but then it just unexpectedly stopped working. This is because there is NO water blocking shield on the light at all, which over time caused water to build up in the unit and caused it to die. This could easily be fixed by a simple shield, unfortunately the light doesn't come with one. I was disappointed to see it go and will be switching to an Aqueon LED setup.

2 PCS Non-return Check Valves for Aquarium Air Pump

As with any other check valves, this will prevent water from working its way into your air pump in case of of a power outage or during water changes. The valves come in a clear plastic bag with no instructions, but you can simply blow into the valve and whatever end the air comes out of, that's the direction to install them. If you look at the valve closely, you'll notice the inner part, a white piece of plastic, the narrowest part of it should be pointing towards your aquarium; Quick tip, you'll also notice the narrowest part has engravings around it that look like ^ ^.

Installation is easy, but if you have standard size hosing, do not expect it to slide all the way into the valve, because the tip gets wider as it reaches the valve's chamber. I installed the tube as far as I could and then gave it a good tuck to ensure it wouldn't come off during operation, it stayed nice and tight with no air leaks.

All in all, a good, inexpensive way to protect your air pump. A must have. Hope this helps.

UPDATE (Jan.2013):

It's been almost a year since I bought these (Jan.2012) and they still work. I have two air stones in my aquarium running 24/7 and the valves still let air through constantly and without a problem.

These work and look nicer than the cheaper blue ones. What more is there to say about a little plastic valve. In response to the reviewer that couldn't figure out how they work. When you blow into the hole on each end, one way will allow air to pass through and the other won't. Install the tubing from the pump so that it can blow the air through the valve.

I figured out the direction with no problem. I tapped and blew until I turned blue. The valves appeared to be stuck at close-checked position, so no air can go through. The chambers are 2-piece construction. The glue obviously held the valves at the closed end during assembly. Poor quality control. Amazon was good to refund the money but still a waste of time, and air. I would suggest to put your air-pump above the tank. I instead ordered 5-outet Lok-Tite® Air Regulator Gang Valves for &6.95 that comes with anti-syphoning (Amazon ASIN: B0002564PI).

This stuff's label doesn't say much about what it does. Does it raise the ph, or lower the ph? Is it just baking soda or calcium carbonate in a fizz tab? It seems to have added a little bit of alkalinity (buffering capacity) to my tank and pushed the acidity from 6.9 to 6.8 further away from center!.

One tablet in a fresh tank will cloud the water for days. A tablet in an estableshed tank will cloud the water if the ph is not too far off from where this stuff wants it to be. There is no patent information available on it, and there is no more information on the product website than on the product packaging. I would rather stick to products like ph+ and phto resolve specific issues with ph than to have a mystery tablet that advertizes like it handles things either way.

I suppose if you did have a big ph problem, that this stuff probably could help. But I wouldn't include it in regular maintenance routine unless your tap water comes out with the acidity of a soft drink.

I wish that companies who market 'simple fix' products like this to the general public would not disrespect us so much as to hide how the product works... Marketing on the front of the pagkage & explanation on the back. All we get here is marketing & auto-magic hype.

Tried these for lowering the pH in my fresh water aquarium, simply put, doesn't work. Tested water directly from faucet and pH was around 7.6 and after adding 2 tablets to a 20 gal aquarium, pH is near 8!!! These tablets are useless, stick with something you can read a label on the packaging that describes contents & remedies. Directions do say you may need to soften very hard water first, don't know if this would've made a difference or not!? I'll be buying something else from now on.

These helped lower the PH in my aquarium. What I liked about them, is you could add the number of tablets required which disintegrated quickly. They were easier to handle than messy measuring spoons.

I will not claim that this product works for everyone (in fact if you look at all the reviews, you will see some that claim this PH corrector does not work) but it did work for me. The PH in my 20 gallon tank used to be on the low side around 5.2 to 5.6. I placed 2 tablets (1 tablet per 10 gallons) inside a cup filled with water from my auarium and let sit for a few minutes while it dissolves (I don't recommend placing it directly in the tank). I poured the water into my tank and after a couple hours or so I tested again and the PH was between 6.5 and 7.0 which is much better than where it was. For me the effects lasted for quite a while not sure how long but definitely more than a couple days or so. I'd say maybe a month? Anyway this product worked for me and if your PH is a little high or low I'd recommend trying these. I'm not sure how well this stuff would work if your PH is off by a lot though. But I thought an increase from 5.2 to 6.5 to 6.8 was pretty good! I plan on buying these again.

I have turtle tanks which are the perfect picture of filth.....turtles are horribly filthy animals. this stuff is the only thing that I found that keeps the tank crystal, and I mean crystal, clear. I ordered this for my 2.5 gallon aquarium, and it fits perfectly. There isn't room for much else, but I tied my java fern to it and I have a small Japanese moss ball as well as a silk plant, and my betta still has room to move. I put it in a pot to boil, and it floated at first, but it sank after a couple of hours. I boiled it for over a week before putting it in my tank, whenever I was home, and would change the water every couple of hours. By the end, it was still leaching tannins, but the water was much paler after a couple hours of boiling compared to how dark it was before the first water change. Now that it's in my tank, the tannin leach seems to be slow enough that I'm really not noticing it.

I love making my tank look natural, so this is perfect. Looks exactly the way I wanted it to, and it's a great way to anchor my fern and provide a natural hiding place for my betta.

UPDATE 3/28/12: I did see white...I don't know what it was, some sort of white film on it for a few weeks. It didn't bother my betta, and after searching online, I decided it was most likely harmless. It went away after a few weeks and I haven't seen it since. I have also upgraded to a 5 gallon aquarium, and it looks just as good in there.

This like every thing I've purchased from Amazon was more than satisfactory for the price. I was shipped a very nice piece which is sometimes hard to find in pet stores. Good buy

Bought this a month ago and it still leaches tannins. For the first week, I boiled in hot water for 10 minutes then removed and transferred it to a large ziplock bag full of warm water for the rest of the day. Every day that week, the bag was full of dark red water. I noticed white spots forming on the log so I stopped boiling it and just used hot tap water in the ziplock bag every day since then. Well, water is a lighter red now; but not clear enough to see through. Wondering how much longer I have to do this before I can put in my tank?

Regarding the size, it's pretty big for a "small". If I could put it in my 10 gallon tank, it would take up 1/3 of the length and 1/5 the height. I was going to wrap it with java moss and hang java ferns off it. But I can't as I don't want my red betta swimming in red water.

I ordered this for my office fish tank. My only complaint is that there wasn't much information about it. It doesn't come with a pump so you do have to buy that separately. In my office we have a small 5 gallon tank containing a gold fish and a betta. I bought the smallest pump I could find and once I put everything in my tank and turned it on the force of the bubbles created a virtual earthquake. I guess my complaint is the air hole, maybe it could be smaller so the bubbles weren't so intense. The bubbles in the picture are nothing compared to the bubbles that actually come out. After that we decided to prop the door open and just leave it in the tank as decor. Two days after we did that our fish ended up with an injury from bumping into the very sharp edge on the inside of the door. We ended up taking it out completely and don't use it at all anymore. But it does work well and do what it's supposed to I just wish I had known it wouldn't work for my small tank and Black moor (they don't see well).

I may install this later. The problem is the tiny hose that gets kinked easily in the gravel. Perhaps this was meant to be installed in fine substrate!!!

This was working fine for two years, then yesterday while I was gone I get an email from my Apex telling me the aquarium temperature was below my threshold. Turns out the heater was 'on', but the heating element no longer gets hot. Had to throw away and get another one. Done with Finnex.

purchased two 300W for a 150g reef tank. Had a pair of Marineland Steath heater in there for two years and it blew apart. One of the 300W HMO works fine, the second one would not heat up. Open the control box and found one of the leg of the SCR not solder on the board. Re-solder and it is working OK now. Seem like no QC took place.

To my horror, I came home last night to a 96-degree reef tank. The heater failed in the on position. I lost 1 fish and all my corals. Just got done scrubbing the dead stuff off my live rock. My suggestion is to think twice about purchasing this one.

Finnex HMO 300 Watt w/ Memorized Digital Controller Aquarium Titanium Heater (80 100 Gallons) My Finnex HMO 300 Watt Titanium Heater was inaccurate and seemed to me to be unreliable. The Finnex registered 77 deg. F, which was > 2 deg. higher than the 3 thermometers in my tank. Those 3 agreed among themselves within 0.2 deg. F. The heater responded poorly, or not at all, to my efforts to raise the temperature in the tank. I did not want to risk using the Finnex Titanium in my tank and discarded it. I have a 75 gal tank with two Eheim filters (with no filter heating elements). I had removed the two other heaters from my tank. I have had tropical fish tanks since the early 1940s.

This heater is Terrible! I don't even want to give it one start but you cant give it negative stars.

I bought 2 of these. 1 for my 46 gallon tank and one for my 72.

In both cases the electronics where you change the temperature malfunctioned.

In one case it was not dangerous. The first case it just stopped showing the temperature. I could not tell if it was working since there is no light on the heater itself the only way I could tell if the heater was working was the press the up or down button and wait and see if my temperature went up or down. I did not want to Cook or Freeze my fish so I tossed that one out.

Yesterday the 2nd one malfunctioned and it could have been bad if I had not been at home.

I was in the kitchen cooking when I head a loud POP then a hiss from the fish tank. As I got closer to the tank I got a faint smell of smoke. Further investigation lead me to the heater and once again the plastic device used to turn the temperature up or down. The numbers burnt out again but this time it was very hot. I unplugged it. When I put it to my nose I could smell burnt electronics.

I originally wanted to buy the JBJ true temp 300W but I cheeped out. I will not make the same mistake twice!
