Coralife Biocube, Size 29
The Biocube's lighting system can run hot despite cooling fans. The aquarium was pushing 79 degrees in late March which worried me. It is very difficult to install additional cooling fans into the hood. Thankfully, there are several great companies making retro kit LED light systems for nano reefers. I bought a soldered 95% fully assembled retro LED kit specifically for the Biocube from StevesLeds.com for $294. Since is fully assembled, you simply remove the hood and existing light & cooling systems to screw in the new LED kit. You are removing entire guts of interior hood. Takes less than 1 hr and a Phillips screwdriver. LED kit is equipped with pressurized cooling fan which is used in Sony WEGA TV's. LED kit is dimmable and has 2 controls. RapidLed also makes a similar $245 dimmable kit for the Biocube. The main difference is that Steve's model includes cooling fan. RapidLED does not include fan (you would keep existing cooling fans) and one must purchase a reef controller to dim lights and purchase two separate dimmer controls. Both make great LED lighting retro kit systems so is tough decision. After making my LED lighting system upgrade, I'm very satisfied with my aquarium.I purchased the Biocube for my husband for his birthday. He had been wanting to start an aquarium, and this was the best aquarium to get started. It was so simple to set up and it's thriving with aquatic life after just a few weeks. We've spoken with a local aquarium expert/salt water fish guru, and he even said that we had made a good choice in getting this aquarium. We are loving it and would recommend it for anyone starting out!

I purchased this through petsolutions and set it up instantly as an upgrade from the original biocube upon arrival. It's been running now for a week and I love it! My fish are happy as well as the corals I had. The colors in my fish, corals and inverts show better with the lighting on the system. It runs very quietly and is so easy set up, take care of and get to the cambers when needed for your mods or add ons. I found the add ons like my sterilizer and skimmer to be more complicated to set up in the tank then the tank was. I get many compliments on my system and am even considering buying another if I find space to set it up for seahorses or something! I'd recommend if you have looked at this system to stop looking and purchase. Petsolutions through amazon is the cheapest I had seen it online and shipping is included!!Read Best Reviews of Coralife Biocube, Size 29 Here
I tried starting up a saltwater aquarium using my freshwater tank, hang-on filter, etc... While it worked fine for a FOWLR tank, I was unsuccessful when adding corals. After wasting a ton of money and time, I caved and bought this coralife tank. What a life saver! I did a few minor mods like cutting out the tab separating the intake from the second chamber to allow greater flow. Got rid of all those bio balls and added a carbon bag, nodes I already had, purigen, and a protein skimmer. Life is good now. This is worth the money, just do your research on biocube modifications to make this worth the price.Want Coralife Biocube, Size 29 Discount?
While the biocube has always been a well-made product, it is not well suited to freshwater environments as the advertising says. My mother had the oceanic 8gal for a lone kribensis and loved the smooth look. I have made more freshwater-friendly alterations to mine (including a new pump with half the gph and a ball valve, different lights, different filter media, etc. etc.) which make it much more suited to freshwater, but it does cost quite a chunk of change. I am very pleased with the final product, it is likely I would not choose to do it again -especially with a product that advertises as being freshwater-compatible.For anyone who owns this product already and doesn't want to put in the effort of modding the hood and light fixtures, Coralife DOES make a 16" 36w 6700k compact light. There is hope!

Jardin Plastic Fish Tank Aquarium Plant Décor with Ceramic Base, 5-Piece, Red Green
The quality of the plants is good, and the bases are weighted enough to keep the plant down by itself. You will not find this color combination in this style of plant anywhere else, and the price is good, around a dollar and some change each. I recommend you buy this item. Since it comes with 5 in a pack it is really ideal.

Perfect-A-Strip Incandescent Light, Black, 12 1/2"
Pros Works as it should
Cons Has an old-style small black turn switch, as opposed to a push button (like the other Perfecto lights), which can be annoying to use at times.
P.S. The description doesn't state, but this is a single bulb fixtureThis tank light fits my 2.5 baby fry tank extremely well! I love it! I use the Aqueon brand "Colormax" color enhancing mini compact florescent (for saving power and better lighting) bulb ( 6"L; 10 watt lamp) and it works beautifully! The colors are extremely vibrant in the tank and I don't mind that it has a turn style black knob on the side. This also comes with a little strip "stand" thing (not sure what to call it" that's a few inches long (it that), to hold the light in place. Make sure you figure out where you want it before gluing it, and I guess I was too impatient for mine to let the adhesive (comes already on the "stand") completly set, so mine ended up sliding, but this won't happen if you let it set like the instructions say. haha! oops? ;)

I have 10 of these running sponge filters in my fish store. If you restrict these pumps in anyway, such as using a valve, the diaphragms will rupture. If you run them wide open they last for years. You can wreck one in minutes by simply turning a valve off. The cheep diaphragms can't handle any back pressure. I'm guessing the Chinese never tested them that way and went ahead and made 1,000,000 to sell in the US.Good pump if don't restrict it.
You get what you pay for...
The Rena one is much better.
Want Tetra 77855 Whisper Air Pump, 100-Gallon Discount?
I purchased the Whisper 100 about three weeks ago to drive both tubes on an undergravel filter in a 30 gal tank. I was replacing a Whisper 40 that wasn't able to drive two tubes. The 100 was noticeably louder than the 40, but still OK in my living room. You could tell it was there, but you could tune it out. Until a couple of days ago. The whisper turned into a rattling hum on the left side. Adjusting the airflow made no difference. I had to disconnect the tube. That did the trick, until today when the right side started going south. So I unplugged it and now have two separate pumps (a whisper 40 and some other tiny one I got at Walmart) running the two tubes. Both of them together are quieter than the 100 was when it first came out of the box.I give it a 2 instead of a 1, because I could probably send it in and get it fixed, but at this price it's just not worth the trouble.

Cladophora aegargropila "Marimo Ball" Live Algae Ball
I love this thing. It's a lovely shade of green, and it's nice to look at in my tank.
I ordered the medium (the only size available) but it was definitely much bigger than I was expecting. Medium is a relative term so I had no idea what I was going to get. But my Marimo Ball must be maybe even 2" in diameter. As I said it's very healthy, green on all sides.
I've had it for a month, I think, and it's just peacefully doing its thing.
I did have a problem when I got it. My mollies thought it was a snack bar. They went to town on it. I didn't want to take it out of my tank, so I got a clear, 3 or 4 inch tall, plain 6 oz drinking glass (sort of like a highball glass only a bit rounder) and put that in the tank then set the Marimo Ball in the glass. So I can see it but the fish don't go in the glass too often so it's not getting eaten.
The problem with my little trick is that food gets in there, and the Marimo Ball doesn't roll around on its own. But it didn't roll around in the tank anyway, so it's not that big of a deal. I have a special long handled wooden spoon that I use to plant plants and arrange things. So I just sort of stir over the Marimo Ball with the spoon and create a little vortex to clean out the food from underneath, and turn the ball to a different side to get some light.
It's definitely worth the money for what you get. It's lovely and peaceful and a beautiful green. And it's really easy to take care of. Highly recommended. :)

Great product! healthy and very green with prompt shipping! My beta fish loves it. The packaging was great and kept the little ball of moss in great condition.Want Cladophora aegargropila "Marimo Ball" Live Algae Ball Discount?
This seller is amaaaazinggg! The marimo ball is a little larger than 2 inches (I bought the medium sized one), it arrived dark green as pictured, and after a few weeks of being in my betta tank, it's still as green as ever! It came in a sealed plastic bag with heat packs around it.
I bought this because I'm a biology geek.... but for people who are buying it for a tank:
I originally kept the ball in a small bowl to 'cleanse' it, i suppose, before I introduced it into my betta tank. It did just fine in a few days of unfiltered 65 degree water (room temperature). It's been in my tank with filtered, 80 degree water for a few weeks now, and it's doing just fine.
I was worried a bit about it introducing new algae into my tank or spreading algae like mad. I have no filter system, just a 1.5 gallon tank, and I replace the water every week. I've had absolutely no problem with algae infestations (contrary to what pet stores might tell you). My fish actually loves the ball, he wedges himself next to it to rest a lot.
It definitely makes an awesome conversation piece!

EHEIM Everyday Fish Feeder Programmable Automatic Food Dispenser
I purchased this after a friend of mine had the same one on his tank for over 1.5 years. It has also worked beautifully for me too. The digital display is easy to set if you follow the instruction sheet.
I also like the fact that it has a manual feed button, so I can provide a feeding whenever I want to without disrupting the preset times.
I spent a lot of money on the cheaper units and after getting frustrated every time, I finally bought this one and couldn't be happier.I own 3 Eheim Everyday Fish Feeders. They are also called air feeders due to a fan used to feed air into the food containter when it activates, to help keep the food fresh. I run a home aquaponics system and so have various tanks to raise fingerlings before they go into my aquaponics tanks. This feeder is the only unit I use for these indoor tanks, though I use a professional US made super-feed feeder in my outdoor grow tank.
I highly recommend the Eheim brand and this particular feeder. I will comment on why I recommend this and then some special handling items.
First, as I mentioned I have three of these units. Two are run 24/7. These units are reliable, last between 1-2 weeks for feeding capacity (different sized fish supplied by each one), and built very well. The built well comes from the fact that one unit has fallen into the tank twice. Immediate recovery, turn off, then air drying of the internals was sufficient for the unit to operate as good as new. I have used these units for 8 months now without problem. They do come with a sticky backed velcro mount so that they are not prone to fall into the tank. I use those on the one that likes the water.
I have had problems with only one unit after about 20 days of first operation where it lost its programming, and upon replacing the batteries it operated for a few days and completely died. This occurred with use out of box, it was not dropped into the water :-) and it was used as recommended. I emailed Eheim, and was advised to return it to their factory or an authorized service center. I returned it to Eheim's Montreal office with a copy of the email and they sent a fixed unit back about 4 weeks later. So, this is why I also recommend the brand. Nothing is perfect, and when I got one lemon out of three -they fixed it.
On using these units:
* you must calibrate the feeder so that on an average run it feeds the amount you want -that is, weigh or measure the amount fed after 10 consecutive runs and then determine what the average is for each feed -it is a simple mechanical feed mechanism -this is why it is reliable -so it is not exact. Your fish are not exact either, they can eat a bit less sometimes.
* once you know how much to open the feeder, mark it with a permanent marker -you need to close it to refill, so this way you will know where to open it back to
* you can run the feeder up to 4 different times a day, and each time can have an optional second feed a minute after the first
* I grow tilapia, so I feed my fish only what they will completely eat in 2 minutes
* the unit is heavy on the side towards the water when it is full -when doing tank maintenance, remove it so it out of the way (obvious, but I did drop one unit twice)
* if your unit goes for a swim: take it out immediately, remove and discard the batteries, keep the battery door off and gently blow dry the unit. Dispose of wet food and clean out the food compartment. Once you are certain everything is DRY, then put fresh batteries in and reprogram the unit.
* when using the unit for the first time, allow a week (before you go on vacation) to ensure it is operating fine and feeding the way and amount you want -don't just set it up the night before you leave -this way you will see how long your feed lasts also
* the feeder does dispense less when it nears empty -but again, fish adapt
* I only use the unit with pellet food one feeder has a mix of 1/8" and 3/16" pellets, the second feeder has fingerling powder
Good luck!

I use all eheim brand equipments for my fish tank because they are the best. So it was a no brainer to get an eheim feeder. However this thing is a complete disaster for small food/pellets used to feed little fish such as neon tetra etc.. The feeding sliding door is VERY cheap and badly design, it's loose and doesnt allow fine control. So you either dumps no food because the opening is too small or dump a tons of food messing up the water params.Even worse when I went on vacation i set the feeding door to a small size just to be safe since too much food will cause a mini cycle + ammonia spike, which is far worse than feeding lesser amount to the fish for a few days. But when i came back my tank is completely full of food, the cheap sliding door of this feeder gradually opened up on its own while in operation. Luckily I have a very heavily planted tank with a lot of fast grower stem plants that are able to absorb the excess nutrients, so a complete disaster was avoided.
The sad part is the feed itself looks to be reliable and solid, just eheim decided to skimp on the most important part of the feed the sliding door that controls the feeding amount.

Works as advertised except there's a major problem......I use pelletized food and feed 12 pellets three times daily, the design of this feeder does not drop the same amount of food each time it cycles. Once adjusted, it can drop anywhere from 4-15 pellets per feeding. You have an opening, which you adjust to allow a certain amount of food to be dispense each cycle, but pellets can jam in the opening. If i open it further, way too many pellets come out. The only solution I came up with was to run it for three days into a pie plate until I averaged the proper number of pellets on a daily basis. I would really not recommend it for pelletized food.Want EHEIM Everyday Fish Feeder Programmable Automatic Food Dispenser Discount?
This is the best automatic aquarium feeder. Over the years I have owned many for multiple aquariums. I have used the feeder with flakes, pellets and both depending on my needs. I have never had any problems with clogging or food sticking.Perfecto Full Pentagon Hoods

Aqua Mist® Add-A-Stone Aerating Aquarium Ornaments
konedogI had a cylindrical sort of sponge thingy that used to emit just one plume of bubbles and was taking up valuable room in the 2-foot tank for the 5 fishes in there. This one rests on the bottom of the tank and I had to secure it with a stone. It emits a stream across almost the entire length of the stone and it's beautiful. You can see more coming out of one end rather than the other. The kids love staring at the bubbles! We'll see how long it lasts. I know these stones tend to get clogged up after a while. I'll have to do some research to see what I can do for periodic maintenance.

I have recently set up a new 30 gallon tank with this stone (and a Tetra 77853 Whisper Air Pump, 40-Gallon). The pump works admirably, however the stone leaves a bit to be desired. As mentioned in other reviews, you may or may not get bubble distribution along the entire length of stone, despite what the image in its description looks like. Mine only bubbles from the first inch near the hose connection installed as directed without additional stones. I then tested it with the backup pump I ordered and a friend's rated for 60 gallon tanks with no major gains. In the end I've added a small length of tubing at the other hose connection point and capped it off there (for some reason this gets another inch or so of the stone working).I can put up with this in my tank, but if I had known there was a good chance half the stone wouldn't output bubbles without having to rig it/modify the stone, I would have opted for something different.
