Coralife 05523 50/50 Straight Pin Compact Fluorescent Lamp, 24-Watt

Coralife 05523 50/50 Straight Pin Compact Fluorescent Lamp, 24-WattProduct was just as advertised and suited my needs perfectly (freshwater aquarium). Seller also let me know before shipping it that the box was not in perfect condition, but the product was fine and gave me the opportunity to cancel. Everything was fine and my guppies and neons are enjoying the light.

I've used Coralife PC bulbs in various applications for many years with no complaints. I use this on for my HOB Fuge where some of its light spills over into the tank. I've found it to be doing what it needs to do, keeping the Chaeto alive & fitting into my CPR AquaFuge Light fixture (13").

Elite Submersible Preset Heater Mini

Elite Submersible Preset Heater Mini, 25-WattMy betta lives in a 1.5-gallon tank, which is a difficult size for which to find a reliable heater. I've been trying for the past eight months or so to find one that (a) would keep the water warm enough for the fish but (b) wouldn't boil the fish alive.

In my quest, I've tried two Marineland heaters. Neither one worked the way it was supposed to, and yes -I DID follow the instructions, to the letter. These are the ones I tried:

1. The Marineland Shatterproof 10-Watt Mini Heater (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176DUEY/ref=oss_product) for tanks up to 3 gallons. This one barely kept the water at 74 degrees (even though it's supposedly factory preset for 78) and it only worked for a couple weeks. It quit, and I was back to wrapping a human's heating pad around the tank while I searched for a replacement.

2. The Shatterproof Mini Heater 10watt (http://www.amazon.com/MarineLand-SHATTERPROOF-MINI-HEATER-10WATT/dp/B0037PJMMC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1286290350&sr=8-4), also for tanks up to 3 gallons. This one heated the water into the high 80s, even though it, too, was supposedly factory preset for 78. I don't know how much higher it would have gone, and I didn't dare leave it on overnight for fear I'd be facing a boiled fish in the morning. I yanked it out of the tank and went back to the heating pad.

Finally, I found the Elite Submersible Preset Mini Heater 25W Elite A748. It's compact, it's unobtrusive, and it actually works as advertised. After a little fiddling with the adjustable control, my betta is now comfy and cozy at about 76 degrees. I don't have to worry about it boiling him overnight, and the tank stays warm even now that the nights are starting to get chilly and our house hovers at 69 degrees. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but so far I'm very happy with it.

I'll try to remember to update this review after a few months, but for right now, my recommendation is to avoid Marineland products -or at least, the ones with "factory presets." Maybe their adjustable ones are better, but my Marineland experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

UPDATE: It is now Feb. 9, 2011, and the heater is still going strong, despite several power blinks and outages during a recent Midwest blizzard. My fish is happy. I am happy. Life is good.

UPDATE #2: It is now June 18, 2012. I just realized I hadn't given an update on this item and figured it would be worthwhile. Sadly, "Sushi" has left us due to natural causes, but this little gem worked like a champ right up until we didn't need it anymore, sometime during the 2011 holidays. Now it's in storage, waiting for another fish to warm, should we choose to get one.

This little guy heats my 1 gallon tank to a toasty 80 degree's for my tropical female betta and shes THRIVING!!!! Lol. I'm planning to get a 2.5 gallon soon (piggy bank is slowly getting heavier), and i'm sure this little heater will do the job.

It was hard to find a heater small enough for my daughter's little 1 1/2 gallon tank that had an adjustable thermostat. We've had this one for a few weeks now and it seems to work perfectly.

I heard a bubbly noise coming from the fish tank. I walked over and looked to see what it was and the heater had water in it. It then proceeded to explode in the fish tank. Thank You Hagen for trying to assassinate my turtles... They evaded your execution attempts once again..

I Unplugged it right as it was bursting so i dont know what kind of damage it would have caused. But the 2 hours seperating glass was a blast.

Want Elite Submersible Preset Heater Mini Discount?

Bought this to heat a 2.5 gallon aquarium. Heater easily attaches to the side of the aquarium and is fully submersible. There are no temperature markings on the heater as it is small and there is no room for a temperature display like the 50 watt and higher Elite non-mini heaters.

To properly adjust the heater, first submerge the heater in the aquarium and allow the heater to adjust to the aquarium temperature before plugging it. Allowing the heater to adjust to the temperature of the water will also give time to find out if there is a leak in the heater. Alternatively to check for leaks is to place the heater in a bucket of water for a few hours to see if it takes on water. Do not use a heater that leaks or is cracked or damaged, it will kill your fish and possibly you.

Adjust the heater to the lowest setting. Once the heater has adjusted to the aquarium temperature (and there are no leaks), plug it in and turn the knob to slowly increase the thermostat setting in the heater until the light comes on.

Allow the heater to heat until the light goes out, check the temperature with your aquarium thermometer and allow the heater to cycle on and off for a few hours. If the temperature is not high enough, turn the dial again until the heater turns back on (light will illuminate). Allow the heater to cycle on and off again for a few hours and check the temperature again. Repeat this until the desired temperature is reached.

This is a nice heater for smaller aquariums and I recommend it to others.

Elite Air Stone

Elite Long Air Stone, 12 InchesI was sent Elite air stones in lieu of the Aqua Fizzzzz.....they are falling apart on me after a week of being in the water.....pieces of crap

item is poorly made. i received black one not blue one shown. crumbling apart, "shedding" the sandy stuff its made of. no plastic base, air inlet came right out, threw it away. would've returned it but shipping would cost more than I would get back. Fail.

Buy Elite Air Stone Now

Putting air line on one of these bad boys is pretty easy.

WHEN TAKING AIR LINE OFF, Don't yank it or pull it off

because the air stone's plastic tube will tear out of the stone itself

I recommend trimming the airline tubing with scissors or a straight razor and slicing it off the air stone's plastic tube which has thick enough plastic to where this is possible

^

use this technique for any ELITE brand air stones

v

By the way, it's a great air stone when given the right amount of air.

Ok so maybe it was the air stone that made the bubbles, but either way bubbles were made. I was a little disappointed that it didn't do any other tricks but I suppose if you are going to do something, do it well. This air stone did. It made lots of bubbles (with the assistance of a whisper air pump)

Laguna PowerGlo LED Mini Pond Light Kit with 3 12-Bulb LED Lights

Laguna PowerGlo LED Mini Pond Light Kit with 3 12-Bulb LED LightsI bought these lights to accent my koi pond. They are easy to use, look great at night and draw very little power. I did have an issue with the transformer getting wet and shorting out, but Laguna was very helpful and sent a replacement set. My favorite part is the light sensorit is an incredible sight at dusk to see my waterfall lit up! They are pricey but well worth the extra dough.

They are supposed to be able to handle bring under water. These got water in them and quit working 3-4 weeks after purchase.

CO2 Natural Plant System Activator & Stabilizer Refill Pack, 3-Pack

CO2 Natural Plant System Activator & Stabilizer Refill Pack, 3-PackI wouldn't bother buying this as you can easily recharge your canister with yeast & baking soda. We have the Hagen Co2 setup that this product is for and my husband tried making his own mix by filling the canister as usual with the prescribed sugar and lukewarm water and added a 1/4 teaspoon of breadmaking yeast granules and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and it works great.

That said, the Hagen unit is great value, but the "activator" is merely yeast granules and the "stabilizer" merely baking soda, (NOT baking powder). For the cost of these little packets, you can buy a jar of yeast and a box of baking soda that will be many times the amount you get in the packets. But hey, if you can't be bothered with measuring, go for it!

I have been using this product for at least three years now. I have to say is and excellent way to improve the grow, colors and health of your plants (almost to good).

The only considerations you have to take are:

1Install it in a place where you can easily access to maintain it (careful with the water)

2Regular measure the water Ph and Kh (it drops both because of the CO2). Consider to use only during the day period of your aquarium.

3Make a little research about the best aquarium light you can use to improve the C02 effect.

4Wait three weeks for the results.

5You will have to regular cut the long leafs (depending of your plants).

6Consider quit the active carbon if your using liquid of pills plants activators.

The price is a little high but the results are really good if you have a plan and good practices with your tank.

TrueLumen 453nm Blue 3-LED Linking Module, One Female and One Male Connector

TrueLumen 453nm Blue 3-LED Linking Module, One Female and One Male ConnectorI put these in line with 2 strips of TrueLumenPros and they were dead in a week. Fortunately I checked on them everyday and was able to notice that the lights were going out individually and not all at once. I'm convinced they're crap.

i bought two of these to provide some dim light at night for viewing.

one burned out within three days, i figured it was just an unfortunate event.

my second one then burned out a month later.

cant be coincidence, its just junk.

Buy TrueLumen 453nm Blue 3-LED Linking Module, One Female and One Male Connector Now

I was reluctant to purchase these at first because of the price and the fact that they do not include a power adapter.. I went on ebay and found a strip light with adapter for $10. I paid for my lesson, as it did not last a week before shorting out and when i pulled it off it disintegrated.

I purchased 4 of these LED pods, and he outlet for them. again.. it does NOT come with a wall outlet you need to PURCHASE it SEPARATELY. I just want to make that clear to anyone thinking about buying this so you do not have to purchase and wait for this item after receiving these without a plug.

I purchased 4 pods to work as lunar lighting for my 12 gallon nano cube reef. I tested it briefly after installing it, but it was still fairly light out.. I was able to get some glow off of my corals, and with just one pod going it was a nice dim blue. I can't wait for it to get dark enough so I can check out the corals under all 4.

They are quality pods, they have double sided tape on them, but I found that it wasn't very good, I replaced it with a better grade tape and stuck them to the heat sink that I have there for my upgraded LED lights. The package also includes screws to screw them in if you wish. They are pretty strait forward. The instructions on the back claim that one power supply will power 20 LED pods. I linked the 4 I have together and they all light up fine.

I will be getting more for my other tanks down the road. I will also upload pictures of them running when I get a chance.

biOrb Heater Holder

biOrb Heater HolderThis holder fits my Hydor THEO Submersible Aquarium Heater perfectly. I have a Baby Biorb and the round glass can magnify the heater so it seems gigantic. However, this holder keeps it tucked off to the side so it's not so noticeable. I didn't have any trouble getting it to stick to the tank. There are a couple different holes for the suction cups so you can fit them to the curve of different Biorb sizes.

Biorb must have changed the design of the heater holder. This isn't as per the product photo or the "Product Dimensions: 12.8 x 0.8 x 5.2 inches". Instead of the long bit of plastic the heater uses suctions to attach to I received a rather neat small molded holder about 3-4 inches long which the heater slots into.

Beware this new holder design will not hold any heater with suction pad to attach it to the holder. You will now need it to be the shape of a Hydor THEO Submersible Aquarium Heater 50W UL or similar circumference.

I bought it for my Baby Biorb and I gave up the swearing & fight to make it fit. Lucky it fits just fine in my 8 gallon Biorb so I swooped the holders. I expect it would also work with bigger Biorbs and its a great looking upgrade from the flat plastic one.

So it gets 1 star for product accuracy and not fitting my baby Biorb and a very fortunate 5 stars for a great product redesign in my 8g Biorb!

My brother had an extra Marineland submersible heater and this heater holder is perfect for it. With it attached to the tank in the back, I can't see the heater at all. Hagen Fluval View Aquarium, 4-Gallon

Hagen Fluval View Aquarium, 4-GallonJust set this little tank up for my Betta, as I was looking for something with a low water flow that was not only functional but also beautiful. I wanted something unique but that wouldn't trade form for functionality.

This tank is perfect.

Brilliantly easy to set up, and simple to maintain.

My betta loves it and there is PLENTY of room. It's so spacious, in fact, that I am trying to figure out what else to put in there maybe some cloud tetras and ghost shrimp? because it really is silly how much room he has all to himself.

The filter is hidden behind the white and green background, the whole thing slides out if you need to access it, or you lift the entire top off. There is hood over the filter compartment, keeping it hidden, but no cover over the center opening (makes feeding fish easy, but may be a problem if you have a "jumper"). The light switch is easily accessible and cleverly hidden within the white plastic top, and there is a white, off, and blue LED setting.

I feel there is enough light should you want to add live plants to the tank.

You also have the option of spreading your substrate (gravel suggested, as the intake for the filter is along the bottom and I would suspect sand might pose a problem) across the whole tank as shown, or there is a nifty little reservoir in the center. That's what I did, and it looks great. Plus, any sinking food that falls out to the sides is easily found and eaten by my Betta (as it's not hidden in gravel).

Overall I think for the price, design, functionality, and quality this tank is a GREAT buy.

It would make an excellent gift, and would be suitable for a Betta or 2 small goldfish, or add a heater and set it up for a couple of fancy guppies or other tropical fish. It's taller than it is wide, so keep that in mind when selecting inhabitants. I really love this tank. The filter does make a barely audible hum, in contrast to my Fluval Edge 6 gal (which I am crazy in love with!!) I have in the same room which is absolutely silent. (I use that for 3 little fancy goldfish)

I am pleased with this aquarium, because the filter pump is quiet, access is easy, the lighting is visually effective, and it holds a relatively large volume of water given its small "foot" profile. The disadvantages are the flip side of the advantages and should be attended to carefully by potential buyers. The aquarium has a small surface to vertical depth ratio; therefore, it may be prone to oxygen depletion, yet an aeration system is not included. (I did not need one, because I use mine to house a betta fish who can breathe atmospheric oxygen, and I also find other ways to aerate.) The filter pump is quiet but also powerful, which may trouble some fish, as other reviewers suggested. (My betta fish manages just fine, but he does seek out the less turbulent areas to rest.) The lighting is visually effective, but it probably isn't enough for the plants, and it would have been nice to have a cheap timer or clock to go with it. Given that this aquarium has enough volume for two bettas, I wish there were an easy way to divide it in two. The green images of plants in the background are more pleasing than not, and the fish explored them at first, but they could have been printed on the plastic with a higher resolution. Finally, because the filter pump is relatively powerful, fish can get sucked in against the vent near the bottom of the back surface of the aquarium. They are generally able to dislodge themselves without problems, but I did end up adding more gravel to cover up the openings of the vent, and I am a bit concerned about straining the pump because of that; so my aquarium ended up with more gravel than was needed (perhaps a rock like the one in the picture could do the job). As another reviewer mentioned, there is space in the filter compartment for a heater, and that is where i keep mine. Finally, the filter cartridges do not see to be proprietary and can be found at very reasonable prices online. In sum, this aquarium works great for my purposes, but I am not sure that it would be as effective for different fish.

Buy Hagen Fluval View Aquarium, 4-Gallon Now

This is a great tank for a small number of fish -aethetically beautiful, easy to maintain so far, and very quiet. Set-up is easy. Just be careful when adding the gravel substrate because all acrylic tanks scratch easily. You'll need to purchase a small, compact heater (15 to 25 watts) to fit in the filter compartment, and add water conditioner and a liquid cycling agent if you want to add fish at the time of set up. A small sample of Nutrafin Cycle was included with the aquarium and worked well. Bettas don't like currents and the two small water returns in this tank do produce minimal vertical currents, but my betta figured out pretty quickly how to manage around those. Three weeks post-set-up, he seems very happy with his new space.

I was expecting a small tank, but it turned out very spacious. We call it the "Betta Mansion." The filter is quiet, but not whisper quiet about as loud as a hardrive spinning on a laptop. It's a great value and I highly recommend it.
